Lion, neat signal lights. Are those more pieces of christmas lights? Or some other repurposed lights?

Ewe knead knot even ask... All of my LEDs (of Late) are of the Christmas variety.

These were so bright I had to put the visors on them to prevent excess light es

Today is supposed to set a record--the earliest day in the year to be over 115F. The temperature is forcasted to top out at 118F. I was out for my ride at 5:15am to try and beat the heat. It mostly worked. It was about 75F when I left and 85F when I got home at 7:30. 85-90F is my upper limit. I used to be able to handle up to 100F, but no longer.

Afternoon Diners,

Since RideOnRoad is about a few hundred miles away from me. Our temperature is 110f. Not the beating heat of 118. Stay cool!

I was thinking of making my own grade crossings out of BLMA modern ones. By making my own rubber molds, then I realized that they're brass. They probably won't work by being to small. I could make them out of styrene.

Here on the Island it is 64 deg. overcast, wind S@8mph. seawater 56.8, 4 foot sea every 11 seconds. Advisory for  Astronomical tides, combined with onshore wind will cause splash over, and some beach erosion at the time of high tide tonight, and tomorrow night. Fog, visibility less than 1/4 mile for tonight into the morning hours.

We have only had three days this year the temp. went above 80 deg.

Codfish are just now coming into Sheepscot Bay, usually they are here at apple blossom time.

 Evening Dinners

Flo, Blowout PLater with onion rings and a Beer please.

What a day at work! Only one customer in 8 hours on a Saturday? He was looking for a $100.00 Twin Set?

After a good rest at work (Should that be the other way around ?) I did some Yard Wars work. I worked ion the back fences on the neighbor's side. I think I found some of the main vine's leading to the power lines. I hope to see some dead leaves in the morning.

Think I will mess with the newer computer some.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, I could use a cup of decaf to unwind a bit.....  BOOM!  What the.....????  Oh Fireworks a block away over at the baseball park!  been going on for about 45 minutes.  Probably celebrating the start of the summer College League Baseball season.  Or maybe that was where the festivities were being held for the Cancer Walk today here in Geneva....  My DIL and Granddaughters walked yesterday over in Waterloo to raise funds for Cancer research and help to victims.  I sponsored all of them and bought a luminaria in rememberance of my wife who died of lukemia....

Spent the day out at the R&GV RR museum for another round of training and worked as a car host on old Erie 254 caboose for the "Soft Opening" day.  Just a small invited crowd, I'd estimate all of about 50 during the 3 hour period we ran train rides, just to have a chance to practice the routine and teach the new guys the routine.  It was fun, but I am beat!  Will have to be sure to pace myself whenm we are open from 10AM to 5PM.......  Any of you interested in the equipment and tours the museum gives can find info here: http://rochestertrainrides.com/the-trains/

Today we used all 3 cabeese (I was Trainman/Car Host on the Erie as always...) and the loco was our workhorse 80 tonner shown in the listing of the equipment.  we have a wealth of other equipment on display.  Some may be restored to runnable condition, but sadly mast are not going to see road time any time soon....  LV211 is our RS3m.  I believe their were only 9 made (rebuilt to have an EMD 567B Prime mover) and ours is the only one runnable (as far as I know.  Only two still in existance).  We also have what we think is the only FM diesel Loco still operable in the state of NY and possibly in the Northeast.  Our H12-44 was used at the Seneca Army Depot in Romulus, NY (that was the depot that the Government would niether comfirm nor deny the existance of certain weapond back in the 1980's.....)  I used to watch her shifting strings of boxcars contianing the items that the government would niether confirm nor deny on my way out to Scout Camp.  I do tell people that the loco doesn't glow though.

Got some painting done on the "new" area on the layout after I got home from the Museum.  Here is a couple update photos:

The plastic you can see way over on the right is to protect a small lift out section over a turnout....  Hopefully some insurance that I will never need to replace that particular turnout.  It goes to the two lower staging tracks.  The newly painted area will end up looking a lot like the scenery already in place behind the tracks:

Hope you all have a great night!

Cliton is at a jr. college a few blocks from me right now, I'm a strong Republican.

12 years ago, he gave the commencement at Cornell.  About the time he started, I broke my hand at work, also in Ithaca.  Coincidence?  Maybe, maybe not.  But Ill never forget that, or the long, sticky summer with my hand and forearm stuck in a cast for what seemed like forever.  Since he can't defend himself, I blame him.  Cool

Good Morning!

I woke up early this morning - the birds were making such a noise!

It´s a bright and sunny day. The forecasted thunderstorm passed us by, but south of us it must have been pretty bad. The southern staes are hit quite badly this year, especially Bavaria, where 7 people died in the flooding of the small town Simbach.

Temperatures will reach 85F, which is quite a lot for our neck of the woods, in fact, too much for me to feel pleasant.

No plans for the day. Although the pain in my shoulder is gone (for how long?), I will still keep a low profile not to stir it up again.

You´ll find something like this only in Britain!

Good evening all.

Flo, the grilled chicken dinner please, with a lemonade. And ice cream sundae's for all, on my tab please. Need a little something to get some smiles around me tonight, as it has been a long, hard day. A friend had a heart attack on Friday morning, didn't make it... Went too long before someone could start CPR and had zero brain activity still as of this morning, so once his son landed from Colorado, they were pulling the plug on the life-support. And then we had weather issues this afternoon....

Weather: Was 87 earlier, then the Lightning front came through, dropped it to 74, but a little strong for my liking, we had a Tornado in the area. Had a lockdown at w**k because of it. The store manager was just getting ready to leave when the warning was issued. (She stayed when that happened, as there were several customers in the store, and I had never been MOD [Manager On Duty] during a issue like that here. We were going over what to do if needed when the tornado siren downtown went off, so we went into shelter-in-place mode, locked everyone in, or out, wherever they already were, save for those customers who chose to leave, per company policy, and took employees and remaining customers to the back of the store into the back restrooms, the designated storm shelter for our store.) Fortunately, no major damage reported from the Lightning, and no reports of injuries from the tornado. Lost power @home briefly during the storm, but no major issues. (All the electronics have the blinking "reset" clocks...) Just really fortunate all the way around, only a handfull of trees got taken down around the area, nothing else damage wise.

W**k: Other than closing due to the Lightning for a while, it was uneventful at w**k today. I am now leading on new accounts, sit second in sales and second on contest numbers. Even with the Lightning as bad as it was, I still managed to do a little over 1200 in sales, but needed 1400 to meet all our stores goals for the day. (Hey, we had a stinking tornado in the area, so I think I did pretty good considering... Especially with getting numbers "across the board" myself, as that does not always happen. [We have three different things to hit numbers in, on top of sales. I hit at least one in all three, plus led the store in sales, by double the next closest associate.] All in all, not a bad day, considering we dealt with the Lightning during the middle of the day.)

Hobby: Played around with painting the glass, for the bridal shower vase, found out that a light primer shot makes a nice fake "frosted glass" look, as does a little thicker flat clear, and also allows a nice color coat to be laid down. (Glass jars from the recycle bin were used for testing. Flat clear was better for frosted effect, primer better for getting color to take.) Once clear coated, it should be pretty resistant, as just cured color coat was hard to scrape off. (Not impossible, but you had to definitely be trying to do it for it to come off.) So, once delivered, I will be painting that. And, due to color, I will be using acrylic craft paint, as I have no model paint that color. Tested the craft paint on a jar from the recycle bin as well, and found that a strained 70/30 paint/distilled water mix, with a drop of flow aid, sprayed well at around 40psi, and cures in about 15 minutes, to the point that you can't even smell the paint! Dry enough to handle, with gloves, without making the finish in about 5 minutes, so should go quick! Also did a first coat primer on a  undecorated car kit I had gotten before to custom paint a rebuilt ARMN Reefer car. Now it needs sanded, then another coat of primer, once any imperfections are smoothed out, so I can do color coat on it. Then will come decals and weathering after that.

Hope all are well, and all enjoy the evening.

I called mom today to wish her a happy birthday. She said it wasn't her birthday. And I said, no, it's *my* birth day, and I couldn't have done it without you!

She laughed, and then asked , "So how old are you  now, 24?"

I said no, I'm 68. She says No.!?

Then she asks me if I had heard from dad?

"No, he passed away in January."

oh well, we will all bring it into the end of the line sooner or later.

 Evening Folks?

Flo, Barry Chile Hotdog and Beer please.

Guess the other dinners and my customers had better things to do today! I had another no sale today and Saturday was all so a Zero, things are looking bleak.

Yard Wars Did get some more stuff pulled out. All so cut some vines up so they would fit in my wheelbarrow. Got them out front for pickup as well. All so did some pool cover skiming. Duck Weed loves my pool cover and this stuff grows fast! I am draning the pool cover and did not want to clog the pump. I wish I bought a bigger pump! I bought Harbour Freight 260 GPH fountain pump for $20.00. I under estimated how much water was in the pool cover. Pool it self holds 25000 gallons, I was guessing the cover had 1000 gallons, seems I was wrong! Whistling I have ran it on and off for about 6 hours and there is still a lot of water in the cover.

Anyone want some free frogs? Laugh I bet I have a 1000 or so of baby frogs!

 See you all later

Ken, baby frogs are excellent mosquito larva eaters.

Weather was wet here today.  Ricky, we are probably on the other end of the storm that went threw while you were working.

Layout front, used up the last of my stained ties and spiked down a little more track.  I actually pulled up more spikes than installed as alignment of track on ties was just not right.  So, I am realigning a section to obtain more even tie tails.  Hand laying track can try one's patience at times.

After many years of service, the little smoky joe Weber grill was finally ready for the trash.  The grill grate was a junker from a cheapy wallyworld grill as someone stoll the good grate when we lived in an apartment in Connecticut.  The bottom grate that holds up the briquets was very old and rusty, the bottom vent had finally rusted open and could not be closed.  Basically time for a new grill.  At 73  years of age I finally decided it is ridiculous to barbeque on the ground and bought a full sized Weber grill that I can use on my porch standing up to cook instead of kneeling down on my knees like using the old smoky joe model.  Cooked some bacon wrapped hot dogs tonight.  Yum.

Enjoyed having the granddaughters in church with us this morning.  The younger one is back at play practice again tonight.

Time to hook up with another british history youtube episode as there is nothing on the TV worth watching tonight.

JAMES MOON
there is nothing on the TV worth watching tonight.

There is nothing worth watching on TV period!  I get my fill when I am out at my son's house.......  LOL

I spent about 5 hours out at Boy Scout camp reinstalling the sound equipment in the back room of the Dining Hall.  That room has been used as the coffee mess now for many years and the Camp Director decided to make it look a lot more inviting place for Scoutmasters to hang out.  He and his crew did an excellent job, BTW.  We had to get a few hundred lbs. of amps back on line and connected to the speakers they drive and then build a box for the mixer board.  We fired everything up and 2/3rds of the outdoor speakers didn't work!   These are very pricy JBL sealed units that are a pain to get to and test....  Did all the basic inside stuff we could , checked the way it was hooked up to what and found we did not make any mistakes.  Then I realised that all the speakers that were dead were attached to one 1500w amp.  So we turned that one around to find that the powercord going into the back of the amp was unplugged!  My blood presure came back to normal and everything worked like it should...  YES!

Then a scouter who was out at camp for some training session he was leading asked me to follow him from camp to the Auto Repair place where he lives (About 15 miles from camp and not too far from where I live).  Seems he lost his rear brakes on the way out to camp and wanted me to be behind him in case the front bakes failed too...  So we held up traffic doing less than the speed limit all the way to Phelps, NY...  I was glad to be of help.

Ken, now you know why that poor black snake you killed was hanging around your pool...  Lots of tasty food for it to snack on!  Sounds like you are making some progress on the yard!  Do hope business picks up for you!  And yes, frogs are good to have around!  I like to have toads move into my back yard garden!

Had mostly rain today here in the Finger Lakes so I didn't have to water the garden and the posies I have in hanging baskets this evening.  I have spent all evening writing my column for the Division newsletter and trying to get the names of a few people who won contests at our last Meet so we won't be embarrased by having someone named wrong.....  Still waiting to hear from a couple people.  The editor of the newsletter is leaving for a week this coming Thursday so I have to get the info to him yesterday at the latest!

Have a great evening out there!

Good evening all,

My dad visited this weekend, so we worked on the garden, and the backyard fences. They're in better shape than before, but we've agreed that we need to do a substantial rebuild of the fences before to long.

On the MR front, over the weekend I picked up some 680-ohm resistors for a lightbulb. I installed the resistor inline with the blue wire on the decoder, and it looked like the light hadn't been working. So I took off the headlight casting, and saw a super dim glow from the bulb. I took off the 680-ohm resistor and put in a 460-ohm unit, and that looked much better.

Gidday Chloe, a cup of green tea please. We’ve now had six nights of frost in a row, but beautiful clear blue days to follow.

A belated Happy B-Day  Brother Lion.

YGW, yes mince is what you would call ground beef. Not long after I left school I worked in an abattoir which had a contract to export the best beef steak cuts to McDs. As a member of the Butchery Dept, I only got to eat a rib eye steak from the order once. It was cooked medium rare the way I like my steak and was the tenderest bit of meat I’ve ever had. (I reckon Dennis wouldn’t have had to use his new fangs). We all thought that it was a waste to end up as a hamburger patty, but at least McDs was buying real quality.

I don’t want to rouse Cousin Vinnie from his siesta, but though I’ve been accustomed to hard w**k and long hours all my w**king life, it would appear that, Ricky, some employers over there expect far more than their pound of flesh!!!

Yaaaawn!

I just woke up from an after lunch nap!

Good Afternoon!

It´s hot outside! Noon temperature was 90F - most unusual for early June! Makes me sleepy.

Flo, a mug of strong, hot coffee, please - that should get me going! And while you´re at it, will you bring a McBeast with all the works for the Lion? It was his birthday yesterday!

A belated Happy B-Day to you, Br. Elias!

I wish I could do some w*rk on the wiring of my Z scale layout, but I am still waiting for some small bits I need to do that. The source I ordered it from must be somewhere far away from Europe, the clue to that being the total cost being less than domestic shipping charges. Well, I´ve got the time to wait, haven´t I?

JaBear - McD. has a reputation for using choice ingredients for their burgers, but even with that, the food´s no good!

I´ll be staying right here at the RC for a while, waiting for some one to join me, but I won´t wait for 8 or more hours...

Monday, but who cares?  I'm retired.

The wife and I drove to Maine yesterday.  Our daughter has been using our garage to refinish used furniture she picked up.  She and her boyfriend were living in a fully-furnished summer vacation rental, which they got for very little money because it was winter.  Now, though, they can't afford that, so they're in a small apartment in Kennebunk, a very nice town on the Maine coast.  We had to drive to Maine to deliver the furniture in the wife's minivan.

We had dinner in one of those tiny harbor bars.  Everyone else was complaining about the weather, cool and rainy, but it was only one night and we were inside where it was warm and dry.  I personally love sitting on the shore in a place with big windows, looking out at the fishing boats bobbing in the harbor, with the shoreline shrouded in fog.

Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have an extra large coffee with lots of cream, please.

Yesterday turned out to be a good day.  I went to the Dupage train show and found a new in the box BB SD45 lettered for SP.  The price was fairly righteous too.  This now makes my stable 2 SD40T-2s and the SD45.  If I can obtain mechanisms for my U33C shells, then I'll have some beefy livery, which SP was well known for.

Funny.  I think of SP in terms of big diesels; however with the exception of DD35s, my perception of UP locomotives is that of the smaller ones, GP9s, Alcos, GP30s, because that's what I regularly witnessed in real life when I was younger.

I suppose we're all that way to some extent.

According to McD's propaganda, they use 80/20 ground chuck for their hamburgers, real eggs Not powdered.  But the meat is frozen and put directly on the griddle, which does affect the taste.

Gotta get to w**k.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK and safe.

Less is more,...more or less!

Good morning diners,

I got my Amtrak SDP40F in the mail on Friday with the Santa Fe and Southwest Limited set. The one thing that I noticed was SDP40F felt very heavy, just like the prototype. I was surprised by it, and no I didn't get the DCC/Sound. I wasn't going to cancel and try more money under a month to upgrade.

It's going to be another hot day so keep cool.

Hey all !

Well the surprise party for my fathers 80th bd went off well. About 50 in attendance but if we had invited everyone it would have been closer to a thousand people. He has had such a positive impact on so many. He has supervised and help build three churches all pro bono, he has helped the single moms with his skills of building and home repair, friends homes, led 100s to Christ, he has many friends and loved by a lot of people. He is a wonderful man on every level.

Yard wars - between the party and the yard work I had to go to w**k to get some rest ! Took three truck loads of yard debris to the dump, mowed and trimmed over 12 hours, spread a pick up load of fertilizer over the yard etc...., touched up paint on the walls, put away a few few boxes....Phew I am tired

Ulrich - I could use a nap ! After lunch naps are the best ! Loved your response to teh email. Wasnt that grand !!!!

JaBear - what is "abattoir?"

Alvie - Nice working with Dad isnt it !

Howmus - My dad used to say all the time " you cant make music if you are not plugged in" Whistling

Jim - Granddaughter are the best. I had my two some this weekend. I walked around with the stupidest grin you ever saw !

Ken - 1000 Frogs ! Go in the frog leg buisness - they taste like chicken ! That should pay for one section of fence ! A tree that size around here would be around tow to three k to take down. It would also depend on whether it could be "dropped" or had to be ropped down piece by piece. If so it could cost much more.

Lion - Happy birthday !

Ricky - Sorry for your loss

Garry - Maybe you could pull one of the cars out for Ricky ? Root beer float Dinner I am ready !

Uncle Bob - A cast in the summer ? Oh how awful ! Bet it was extra itchy !

Angel - how in the world do you survive 110 to 118 degees ?

V8 - How is your mouth feeling today ?

UP - Any photos of the new finds ?

One other great thing that happened this weekend - The "J" 611 rode by our area Saturday - OH MAN was that a site ! I happened to be at the crossing when it came by along with 50 other peopel so I got out and snapped some photos and and a short video. I stood between the rail and the crossing arm. I was pelted with cinder, felt the rush of the wind and smelled the smoke as it went by OH HOW GLORIOUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As Br. Elias could tell you, it's where the abbot lives. Stick out tongue

No, but seriously... it's a fancy word for slaughterhouse.

When referring to technical matters on this forum I endeavour to use the correct US terminology, but in this case it would appear that by trying too hard, I got it wrong.  Sigh
I debated between the use of slaughterhouse or abattoir, because here in NZ they are commonly known as Freezing Works.LaughLaugh

Evening all.

Root beer float sounds good, I will join you with one, but with a slight twist, make mine a coke float! Thanks Flo. Dinner

Weather: 70's today, rain tonight and 60's next two days before we are back to 70's Thursday. The showers tonight are not to be as strong as yesterday's storms, which produced a, now confirmed, EF1 tornado, with a estimated wind speed of 90MPH, with a path of a little over 1 mile long, no injuries reported. The bad thing, it actually occurred later than the NWS warning was for, and farther east than the warning was issued for... Fortunately local spotters and news media were on air, providing updates for local residents. They kept saying this was a dangerous storm, and many local VFD's and municipalities were still sounding their warning sirens, also alerting locals to an issue. (My local VFD uses the siren in two ways, one, the normal soft-to-loud-to-soft, repeat, for fire calls, or a soft-to-loud then sustain for other issues, when you hear that sound, you start paying very close attention to what is around you!) The good news, for me, is humidity is now lower, so, easier breathing for the next several days.

No news on w**k as I was off today. Got some things done around the house, and ran some errands.

Paint front: Airbrushing glass is indeed far different from model trains! Need very thin coats, or it runs, even thinner than on models. Turned out nicely though, and cured very hard with the clear coat on top. Even scraping with a fingernail will not remove paint from it! So, very satisfied with the results. Now, to hope they are as happy with the results as I am. (I am not charging them, so, they better be happy with it! Big Smile

Plan is tomorrow before w**k to get a final primer coat on the reefer car, and a clear coat on another car in preparation for weathering.

Hello to all, and hope all are well and safe.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer Please.

Work Front Man I had a hard sale today. Took me 2 hours to close the deal, I was told everything, this is the first store we stopped at, want to look at reviews on line, need to think about it, more than we wanted to spend and finally won't have the money till Friday. But I did get the deal! Yes Funny thing it was more of a moral victory with me only making $10.00 but a win is a win!

Far as killing the snake and now the frogs, I do feel bad about it! With the snake, if I did not have a wife I would have left it a lone! I knew it was in the pool to eat the frogs. Feel bad about the frogs as well! But zoining wants no water in the cover! Well if you have ever had a pool, you know that is all most impossible but I have a trick I will share later.

If I could get away with it, I would like to stock the pool cover with fish! Heck if I cannot swim in it this year, why not fish?

Yard wars - between the party and the yard work I had to go to w**k to get some rest ! Took three truck loads of yard debris to the dump, mowed and trimmed over 12 hours, spread a pick up load of fertilizer over the yard etc

Hum YGW If you do not like Yard Wars why do you spread fertilizer?

A tree that size around here would be around tow to three k to take down. It would also depend on whether it could be "dropped"

3 K If tree trimers get that kind of money, why do the drive such beat up trucks? Guess they keep there Benz's at home away from falling trees! Whistling Mine could be dropped. For $3000.00 I buy a good chain saw a cheap rail spliter, to bad I don't have a fire places.

Brother Lion Happy Belated Happy B-Day May all your subway cars run on time! No, I take that back, your are modeling New York City and that would not be realistic! Smile, Wink & Grin

 Later, Ken
