I must have Transylvian forefathers as well. Although I go to bed fairly early, around 10pm, I wake up at 11.30am and can´t go to sleep again before 4am.

I have seen scratchbuilt locos in Z scale and the guy who made them was actually a watchmaker!  I think Z scale is largely a RTR scale, with the exception of buildings, which are really easy to make - just draw the fronts and sides, print them and paste them to a box you made from wood or styrene.

Sir Madog
Someone´s burning midnight oill here!

I'm afraid I'm a bit nocturnal. I love the peace and quiet. Dianne isn't really thrilled with it but she still supports me in more ways than one.

I continue to be amazed by the detail that can be achieved in Z scale. I also love the panoramic scenes that it allows. However, a major part of my enjoyment of the hobby is scratch building or kit bashing critters. That is relatively easy to do in HO scale. I guess if I had a watch maker's skills I could do it in Z too but I don't have the dexterity to even try.

Z scale has turned into some fascinating stuff! Once I have completed my narrow gauge layout, I will sell it and should I still have the chance of doing some MRRing, I will most likely build some sort of a briefcase layout in that scale. This will end all space issues!

Look at this beauty:

It´s a Marklin model of a Royal Bavarian State Railway class Gt 2x4/4 Mallet (in Deutsche Reichsbahn guise). The loco was employed in helper service pushing up heavy freight trains on some of the steep grades in Bavaria. They were retired in 1948 after only 35 years of service. None of them survived.

The model is about 3" long!

Ulrich, me again!

I just watched the Z scale video and I have to say I am impressed! As you said,

Sir Madog
I must say that Z scale has left the ranks of a toy and is now eligible for some serious modeling.

The trains were amazing, especially the really long ones. Try that in HO scale! The scenery was also incredibly well done.

Thanks for sharing!

Ulrich:

Sir Madog
Our neighbors are doing their best to make life a hell here.

I'm sorry that you are in that situation. It's not good. Dianne and I have had our share of bad neighbours over the years. They have ranged from biker gangs to drug dealers (its not very entertaining to have a SWAT team in your back yard at 3:00 am), and we were supposedly living in good neighbourhoods!

On the plus side, we have had wonderful neighbours to our immediate south for close to 30 years, and they are from Germany! Better still is that their son, who is a true gentleman, will be taking over their house when its time for them to move out.

Hope things get better. You just don't need any more crap in your life.

Regards,

Dave

Good Morning!

I woke up, only to find out that the world has turned white! This will make  the visit of Mr. President himself a slippery one Laugh.

Chris - names for a white kitty? How about Whitey, or "Neige", that´s snow in French?

I seem to be suffering from a temporary loss of interest in model railroading. There are just too many other thoughts in my head needed to be thought - the most important one how to be able to find a new place to live a life in peace and quiet. Our neighbors are doing their best to make life a hell here.

Richard    Check out the ZFE model 2.    It looks to be the closest to the size I have.

Richard     The one I have is quite a bit older and the chuck end of the one that Henry posted a link to looks like it is a little bigger than what mine is.  It would still work and let you get a bit of a straighter cut by putting it between the rails and cutting.   I looked and didn't see the style I have and it was made by dremel.

This is what is nice about being new(or even in it for awhile) to the hobby, getting to buy all kinds of new and neat tools. Big SmileStick out tongue

I just noticed that I have 900 posts and maybe someday I will make it to that 1,000th.

 For Barry & Galaxy

Hopefully we'll hear something good from Audrey soon. Angel

DougDagRump ... That is good of you to post the yellow ribbon. I hope we hear from Barry and Galazy very soon.

Duke ... Glad to see you posting again in the Diner.

Has anybody heard from CN Charlie lately ?

Ulrich .... I could comment about the visitor in Germany, but I won't .

Alfie .... Thanks for the birthday greeting to Shelley. I'll tell her.

Chris ... I thought of some names for each of our cats, but those names were vetoed by my wife. .... and I had better not post them in the Diner because Vinnnie would not like them.

I had time to work on my track project today. Hopefully, I am almost done now.

Happy Model Railroading !

 Evening Dinners!

Flo, a Beer and I will pick up the dinners tap!

Work Front, it was the last day working side by side with Numbnuts! Yes He was awfull today, still has no clue to what he is selling or if it is made anymore! What really got me Po is today the Little Ash Pit showed up 40 minutes early. (Typo on the schuledule) He knew it was a typo, been there for 3 months and normally comes in a 11:00 AM like he should. Not today, and he got a customer I should have. They bought a spiff bed (hacked the prices so the spiff is half) and got the sale. Then the Little Ash Pit put on his time card he came in at 11:00 like he knew he should have done in the first place! God I am glad to be rid of him!

Hope Barry and Galaxy is well.

Please, a large cup o' mud.  Another 12 hour day at work today ending a very long week.

Chris - as you can see I have an all white cat with the exception of a black toupee (which you can not see on the picture) between his ears.  His name is Snow, 13 years old and tipping the scales at 16 lbs.  He is my best buddy and loves to sit on the firemans seat when I am with my trains.

YGW - glad you liked the salt mine phrase.  Hope you are feeling better and the pain is gone.

All the best.

Herrinchoker,

How could you even think that.

TRY:

Phoebe Snow operated by the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad.

OR:

White Paws after the White Pass and Yukon Route.

Nevermind you all seem disinterested.

Der The local Ace Hardware has 6"  1/8 drill bits cheaper than Amazon

Ride on Road.  I have a flex shaft too.  Not sure it is a Dremel, but Amazon gives you lots of choices.  http://tinyurl.com/zq2c2lc

I bought the new cordless Dremel 8050 and it is sweet.  It acutally has useful lowspeeds  http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=dremel+tool+flex+shaft&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=52661740970&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4622763816178541123&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_57t6cc3eyt_b

Got my carb jets cleaned and the carbs synced.  The bike seems to lack power but I made it to tech day.  It was rainy and I arrived after the rain stopped, but about half the people drove cages (cars in motorcycle speak)  One of those backed into my motorcycle, breaking off the mirror and cracking the paint on the fairing. Vinnie doesnt want me to use bad words,  Vinnie close your ears.

I had someone else sync my carbs and adjust them, it sounds good but still is lacking power and torque.  I need to check compression, but other than that, I am clueless as to where the power went.

Flo, gimme a class of champagne and a bowl of strawberies to welcome our newest addition to our "cat clan".

Furbie, my long haired (very cute) stripey cat - don't know what its really called in fancy cat shows but anyhow she gave birth to 4 kittens.

One of the four is a white male - it may be albino but we can't see the eyes yet as they are not open.  Anyhow, I looked for names like "Ice Man", "Snowball" and other names that might fit a white male (really cool long haired domestic)  cat.

Does anyone here have suggestions for a really great name for a white male cat. Let me know but don't forget the "better half" has to approve it too :-)

Perhaps it could have a reference to locomotive history that I am not aware of (which is most). But can I get some ideas please?

Sir Madog

Good Evening!

The nice weather seems to be over, temperatures are down and we expect a lot of wet stuff coming down soon. The bad weather moves in together with Mr. Obama, who is visiting the Hannover Fair. The city has been blocked for visitors, which keeps us from seeing our son on the occasion of his 29th birthday. What a pest!

I am taking a break from model railroading. I need to clear my head before I´ll be able to continue w*rking on my layout. Let´s say I a lacking the right attitude for it for the moment.

Have a great weekend!

Ulrich, I read your note to Kris - her comments went something like

What!?  That's Terrible - ludicrous! Blocking off  the whole city!  That's just unthinkable!
and so on; so you have support from this side of the pond (which laps a mere 10 minute walk down the hill from our house) Hope your tide turns soon. Angel Which reminds me this Full moon means I should check the tables and re-set our tide clock...TTFN

Richard    I bought a flex shaft for my dremel and you don't get the angle when you make a cut like you do when you leave the wheel in the dremel it self.    Hope that helps and if you have the funds for a flex shaft. . .

Duke, you have peaked my curiosity. I am a relative novice with tools. Any chance you could post a link for the flex shaft?

RideOnRoad
I am still trying to muster up the courage to cut the gaps in my trial track. I am sure I am going to screw up and I hate making mistakes.

- Richard, if you have one of those track guage things which is essentially a block of plastic with pararlell grooves to fit over the track (or can manufacture a similar device from that description) then using it to hold the track in place near the cut point may help minimize mishaps. Also, chuck the cutoff wheel to give as great a length of shaft beyond the chuck as is practical. This will reduce the angle at which the wheel intersects the rail, giving a more perpendicular cut. Just my My 2 Cents My non-Dremel knock off is useless for cutting rail as it doesn't have the ooomph and stalls out as soon as the cut begins!Bang Head Hope it goes well for your experiments.

The weather is warming up in the Valley of the Sun. I went out for my morning ride at 7:00 to beat the heat. It was 65 when I started at 7:00, and 75 degrees when I finished at 9:00. This was my first 100-mile week in nearly two years, and I feel (mostly) great.

I am still trying to muster up the courage to cut the gaps in my trial track. I am sure I am going to screw up and I hate making mistakes.

Afternoon Diners,

After a month of knee pain on my left leg I decided to go the doctors. I have no idea on what she said but she give me a knee brace. I would need to wear this for the week to heal. If not go back to see if there's a other problem.

Zoe, a tall glass of chocolate milk please.

Hope to hear from Barry and Galaxy as well. I'll keep them in my thoughts. Hope they're doing okay.

Heartland, hope your wife ishaving an excellent birthday today.

Cudaken, love the pic with all the B&O power. I agree that the got to have lots of steam power syndrome is a pain in the caboose, plus the wallet. I'll never to recover, but all the smiles, vs. The few groans, ughs, and why'd they do that?! utterances, make it all worthwhile, I love my steamers.

The gottohavemorepassengercars syndrome got to me too, and I have more models of cars to run in passenger trains than I ever thought I would, but again, love it. Of course I have plans to buy many more. Especially with both Walthers and BLI planning to bring P70 and P70R coaches to market this year.

Yesterday, I got reassigned to work at the group home I used to work for. Naturally, I started talking about model railroading to my former coworker. He used to own a hobby store in the 80s. As soon as I told him about running trains with smart-phones, he all but said, sign me up! So, *fingers crossed* another model railroader to be.

I played with my trains last night at the club thanks to an invite from another member doing a run night outside the regular night. I had my K4 pulling 29-cars, mostly mail and express, but with some milk cars and even an MTH 12-1 Pullman in the mix. First time I'd run the Pullman since I bought it at the February Timonium show. I also had my L1 pulling a 42-car freight train sitting in the staging yard I got the go-ahead to run. It hadn't been my train, but I got permission to run it. I had two relatively long trains running in opposite directions. Great time until "gremlins" got to our trains. My L1 spontaneously dropped its programming and only responded to address 03. My K4 would without warning go from like speed step 5-10 to 99, and the throttle couldn't be used to stop it unless I plugged in, but it'd still take off and race. I pulled both locos, boxed up my trains, and called it a night while another member, better versed in the DCC system, investigated. Somehow a cable from our computer got pulled and made many locos behave in an odd way.

Good  Afternoon everyone. Just a quick drop in to say I’m still around – and share the concern over Barry and Galaxy. Prayers continuing.Angel Mrs. Garry!
Train Front:  finished a jigsaw puzzle our daughter gave me a couple of weeks ago last night – trickier than we thought as there are many similarly coloured areas!
Spent a little time yesterday in the garage (where my one functioning vise is installed) unsoldering Peco rail joiners from turnouts surplus to requirements. This salvage op I’m hoping will provide enough metal joiners for me to do all the 16 turnouts this new layout requires. I’m using Atlas Flextrack for the main and sidings, but their metal joiners are a pain to fit onto Peco turnouts – at any rate so I’ve found in N. A pain, I may say which exceeds that of salvaging Peco joiners!
I’ve all the cavities cut for the turnouts now, and yeaterday picked up a pack of cocktail straws (99¢ for 100) to have conduits for the track feeder wires through two layers of Styrofoam and the underlying doors. Now I have to figure how to drill 1/8th inch holes through that sandwich of material. A regular 1/8th inch drill bit is WAY too short to get through without doing extreme violence to the top surface of the Styrofoam with the drill chuck. Isn’t it odd? As I was typing that a possible solution popped into my mind. If I sharpen the handle tang of a chainsaw-sharpening file of suitable diameter (and I have a selection from which to choose) I’ll have an instrument which will be both stiff enough and long enough to get the job done. Also, it occurs, with the file not bringing material to the surface there won’t be as much Styrofoam dust with which to contend.Thumbs Up
I’ve yet to remember just how I dealt with the roadbed and ballast over the turnout cavities on the last layout. Like Ulrich’s elusive layout video, there seems to be no photo record in my files! I do know that masking tape is part of the process. All will doubtless be bodged together in a satisfactory fashion in the end!
