Steven Otte OK, guys, I'm back, so you need to rein it in. Discussing politics obliquely is still discussing politics. Drop it.

Steven ... Thank you for reminding us.... I have been unable to start a new thread in the PM's (Start a conversation) in at least a couple of years. Others have told me they try to PM to me, but I do not receive their medssages. I think PM's is where people can take care of off topic matters when PM's are functioning as they should. I have tried changing my settings and stuff like that. ... Thanks much. Again we appreciate what you are doing.

cudakenMr B That is how I feel. When I spoke to the VA Dr about Metformin he said it does not do that. What does he know, he works for the VA.
It's you that's taking the medication, not him, so you need to tell him that it's not working for you. There are other medications available, and it's his responsibility as a doctor to find the one that's right for you. Metformin is a perfectly good medication for most people, but if you're not one of them, it can be pretty dismal.

Flo, please.
MisterBeasleyI was put on Metformin, a medication that did its job for my blood sugar but made me feel terrible. I had no energy, could not exercise, and I was mentally sluggish as well.

YGW I beleive your math is off. If you have 1/3 more diesels than steam that would be 195 diesels engine's + 150 steam engines that would be 345 engines. That = 11.5 engines a year. Tad over the 4 a year you claim! But hey I would probley be in the same boat if I had got into trains and not cars. 15 years ago I spent $25,000.00 on the Blowen 440 in the 69 Charger, that is not counting the 69 Charger it self!
By the way, I called my self a Chest Beating Liberal Red Neck. That will take a phone call to explain.
New Computer, well sort of. Got a free computer from the bank my daughter works. It is a Dell Optiplex 360. Came with a Intel Dual Core 2.93 GZ processor, could have only 2 GB of ram, but will take up to 4 GB of ram, the max I can use with XP Pro. With it being from a Bank, they took the hard drive, that I understand.
I only need say 80 gigs memory for the hard drive (I only have used 40 gigs on my current one) So far I have not found any for less than $50.00 at New Egg.com. Most hard drives that are Sata like this one in 500 gigs or a TB for $80 to $120.00. But, I can get a whole used one for $59.00 but it has Windows 8.1 installed. I want to keep my XP Pro as long as I can.
Trains like me tonight.

Good Evening Diners,
Brunhilda, I'll have an Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.
Work front: work has been very stressful as of late. People not showing up, whether they're sick or not, just means means those who are there have to do double and triple extra and as a result actually get less done.
Well, that's not anyone else's problem.
Ulrich and YGW: I found your conversation on layout design and consulting fascinating. Ulrich, you have the right approach if you plan for the public. When designing for others, what we may like has nothing to do with it. To have a satisfied client one has to ask the client lots of questions to determine the best course of action to achieve their desires. I know that sounds like vague gibberish, but it is nonetheless true. I wish I could command $200/hr for design consultation. Funny, interior designers have to know so much just to do their jobs, we should be paid like Architects, etc., but alas most of us scrape by. But I wouldnt dream of doing anything else. I'm sure you feel similarly about layout design.
Got to get some rest.
i hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Afternoon Diners,
I received my Walthers catalog yesterday and I noticed their making a 48' Thrall well cars. I was thinking of reserving a few. I hope walthers isn't planning on cancelling it half way through.
I was thinking of getting the ATSF (SFLC) 5 unit and 2 TTXs with one each 5 and single units.
I thought I change it from naming cats.
Amtrak America, 1971-Present.
Good afternoon everybody .
Still trying to name cats ? ... I recall some people who called their cat "DC" which stood for "D___ Cat" .
All 3 of our cats are rescued cats.
I'm busy with non-model-railroad-stuff again today.
YGW .... I wish I could say a lot more here, .... (I edited out some language ) ... But maybe, we prefer working on trains so we don't allow our blood pressure to rise as a result of things beyond our control.
MisterBeasleyHe's very friendly and personable. He was a shelter cat, so no pedigree,
That could be a suitable description for me !
Tux is so cute!
My daughter named her cat "Tux."
He's very friendly and personable. He was a shelter cat, so no pedigree, but he appears to be at least part Maine Coon Cat.
Lion
We had a cat that looked just like that one! Except he had a white mustache. We called him Groucho for Groucho Marx because his white mustache was shapped just like Groucho mustache

He is resting in the "Money Car".

Steve - welcome back. Were you on vacation ? Excellant ideas for kitty names !
Henry - Thanks. Will look up Stephen. History has always been a love of mine and especially where we live it is all around us. I can visit Mt. Vernon, Monticello, many Washington DC landmarks that pertain to early American history. In addition I live it what is calLed "Mosbys confederacy" an area where John Mosby operated the first widly successful special forces unit of approximately 400 men behind enemy lines with out loosing his command. I can drive fifteen minutes and still see damage left behind from Sheridans march through the valley where he burned everything to the ground. There are still burned out mills, homes with nothing but lone chimneys standing, troop earthworks....That is one reason I am particular sore about the change in Money. I can still feel and touch the places where sacrifices were made so that we can enjoy our freedoms. It ticks me off to no end that these freedoms are being trampled on. I think it deeply disrespctful.
CN Charlie - Maybe you should have convinced the wildebeast that Lion was really just a Kitty ? Welcome home !
Garry - Thanks. Didnt think anyone thought that. Its that I have just about had enough of the PC garbage thrown around these days in the name of tolerance which is in reality nothing more than justificantion for rude, self serving behavior that has nothing to do with tolerance.
Ken - Yes I do have about 150 steam engines and maybe a third more diesals. Keep in mind that this is from 40+ years of collecting and buying when I find a really good deal. Thats only about 4 engines a year. Yes my wife and I do make great money, but we are not stupid with it. I am what nice people call frugal not nice people have another name for it. I still pack my lunch, only go out to dinner once a month, eat left overs, turn out the light when I leave the room, repair stuff vs. throwing it away, shop at Wally world vs. the big expensive grocery stores, use coupons etc...Really? a redneck Liberal. I didnt know those two words could be used in the same sentence ? Boy I would love to have an offline conversation with about that just if nothing else to hear what that looks like ! If you care to share send me a PM. Yea it was an unusually easy day.
Ulrich I am going to send you an email later today. Please keep an eye out for it.
Howmus - Was beginnig to worry about you. Havent seen you in here every day.
Reinhard - send me an email if there is anything I can help you with. In my other emails I have sent the tag at the bottom has my number if you want to call.

Mr.B - thanks for your encouraging words. A lot of my current state is surely just mental, butr nevertheless, the physical effects are just the same. my doc tells me I am burned out, but that doesn´t help me at all. The more I try to battle it, the worse it gets.
I am trying to get my mind ste on other things and occasionally, it works!
Found this video of a German Z scale steamer, which is more detailed than my HO stuff 50 years ago!
Enjoy!
The video shows a Marklin Z scale class 50 decapod in pre-war Deutsche Reichsbahn guise. The loco has been fitted with a new motion made by Michael Bahls. Newer releases from Marklin now have a complete set of Walschaert gear.
My Ebay auction went quite well - I made enough money to buy the catenary stuff and even put some amount in the piggy bank!
Good morning, if you call this "good." It's cold (mid-40s) and dreary with rain in the forecast. Fortunately, it's hockey night so I won't be trying to bike or walk outside for my exercise. And that half-hour at the gym on the dreadmill won't be necessary, either.
Sir MadogPetra tells me I have changed a lot recently. I don´t smile any longer, most of the time I am just sad and silent.
Y'know, Ulrich, when I first got the diabetes diagnosis I was put on Metformin, a medication that did its job for my blood sugar but made me feel terrible. I had no energy, could not exercise, and I was mentally sluggish as well. I think the drug was taking needed nutrients from both my body and my mind. My wife told me I was a terrible person for the 6 months or so I was taking it. Once I got on a different medication, I was much more energetic and happy.
I researched Metformin as much as I could, and found no mention of the kind of symptoms I had. Friends at work and right here in the Diner said they took it with no issues. I guess my response was not typical, but still, the point is that you have a right, even a responsibility, to be suspicious of medications. Your doctor, like mine, can't tell how you feel.
Your goal should be to go outside and walk a kilometer every day. If you can't do that now, work up to it. Have water and a container of yogurt or something waiting for you at home if you feel tired. Invite Petra to go along.
Two years back, I was struggling to get up stairs and I just wanted to sleep when I got home from work. I was an unpleasant, depressed man. I started walking a mile a few times a week. Now I'm doing 2 hours on the bicycle, coming home, showering and feeling alert and strong until bedtime.
Start small. Ask your doctor how much you can do, and then do it.
You have to name him George.

LOCO_GUY One of the four is a white male - it may be albino but we can't see the eyes yet as they are not open. Anyhow, I looked for names like "Ice Man", "Snowball" and other names that might fit a white male (really cool long haired domestic) cat. Does anyone here have suggestions for a really great name for a white male cat. Let me know but don't forget the "better half" has to approve it too :-) Perhaps it could have a reference to locomotive history that I am not aware of (which is most). But can I get some ideas please?

Cats named after train references? Now you're in my wheelhouse! All my cats have been named for railroads. When I think of white locomotives, I think of the Soo Line. "Soo" is a great name for a cat; most people will think you're saying "Sue," and only you will know the truth. I know you said it's a male, but you can always tell people it's a reference to that great old Johnny Cash song.
Or you could name him after a kind of freight car that's often painted white... Reefer, Hopper, Tank.
Or how about Porter... they wore white uniforms.
Or skip the color references altogether, and name him for your favorite railroad personality. Vanderbilt, Harriman, Harvey, Mallet. Or maybe a locomotive... Mogul, Prairie, Mike (for Mikado), Geep (with the added benefit of the "Popeye" reference).
If I was a diesel modeler, I'd name all my cats Geep. Then when people got confused, I'd explain, "No, that one's Geep 7. This one's Geep 9, the other one's Geep 18..." And of course any cat born with extra toes gets named SD-something.
Mornin' folks!

Yoohoo? Anybody in here?
This place looks deserted! Janie, I am here for a late lunch - make it the burger platter w/fries and all the works, and an RBF to wash all of it down, please.
I have been fiddlin´ withe the plan, again just for the fun of doing it. Added a lighthouse, a couple of trucks and a bus. Heck - I like that plan more than I should!
Can you spot the loco and tell me which RR operates it?
I have a few suplus items listed on Ebay with bidding ending today. As it looks, I will be able to purchase the catenary for my layout, so I can finish it and put it up for sale. Better to start early than rushing in should we be able to move. I doubt that we will have room for a layout in any new premise that might come up.
Good Morning!
I did not catch much sleep last night, so I decided to be a grouch today! Looking outside is no help either - it´s just plain ugly weather!
Heartland Division CB&QUlrich .... Sorry to hear you have a bothersome neighbor. Can yoy simply complain to the property manager ?
Unfortunately, it´s not just one. We are surrounded by filthy, noisy, rude, brain- and reckless people. It´s not a good neighborhood at all - more like the slum of our town - definitively on the wrong side of the tracks. Having to live here is hell. We have been enduring it for nearly 7 years, but I am end the end of what I can stand. It has turned into a serious threat to my health. We have no option other than sticking it out, for which I don´t have the mental and physical strength.
Petra tells me I have changed a lot recently. I don´t smile any longer, most of the time I am just sad and silent.

Work Stunk Still dealing with the After Math (spell check) of Nancy and Jerry in my store at the same time!
My self, I am a chest beating Liberal Red Neck. You folks can see if you can figuer that one out.
Ulrich I can see your point some what. There are a lot of free plan's on the internet. But, if some one will pay $1,000,000.00 for a Austin Martin why not $1,000.00 for a good well thought out train layout? It would be a small percent of the folks in the hobby but not all of us are broke.
Reinhard I think it was Will Rodgers that said "Growing old is not for the faint of heart". I am to the point where I as well wonder where the man I was went. Some old guy looks back at me when I shave now?
YGW Ok, you don't have 150 steam engine's right? Well if money was not a problem I might have that many. One of the folks here has a copy of every real Big Boy made in real life. As Jay Leon call's it, "more money than brains club". Seems you must have had a lite day at work with all your post.
Gary I miss wishing your half . I have ment to for the last few days.
See you all later, Ken
CN Charlie ... I was wondering where you were. Welcome back !
I've been on vacation sice I retired. I seldom see any need to ruin it with the stress of travel. Particularly with a wife who snores.
Good Evening,
It has been some time since I was last here so I thought I'd just pop in to say Hi and let you know that I'm still around.
My wife and I just got back from a trip to Botswana and South Africa. We were on safari and had a great time but it was tiring. Travel these days isn't very relaxing especially dealing with large airports. We both managed to pick up a flu bug and I also had an intestinal issue for which I am now on antibiotics.
I tried to persuade a wildebeest to come back as a pal for Lion but he didn't believe me and just ran off. Wonder if the word Lion was the problem.
We did see a mother cheetah with 4 -2 month old cubs. Probably the cutest little animals I have ever seen and very frisky too.
We are still trying to get sorted after the trip but neither of us has any energy.
I did read the forum on our tablet from Johannesburg and hope Barry and Galaxy are ok.
I haven't touched the layout for a couple of months now what with trip prep and the actual trip. Doubt that I will for another month at least.
See you soon,
CN Charlie
Good evening .
Reinhard ... It is good to go to the doctor, and the older we get, the more problems we have needing their atention. I hope there is nothing very significant in your case.
YGW .... Yep. We're all frioends here. I doubt anybody thinks you are prejudiced, and you need not worry about that.
Ulrich .... Sorry to hear you have a bothersome neighbor. Can yoy simply complain to the property manager ? ... I like the Z scale video.
Henry .... That is a good book
Yellow Ribbon is displayed for Barry and Galaxy .
Happy Model Railroading !
YGW Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose. While you are at it, pick up his book about the transcontinental railroad Nothing Like It In the World. His reputation became tainted in later years, but they are very readible books.
Reinhard, I agree with the Lion. If he/she stuck his finger, where doctors are prone to go, and felt a tumor, you would have been told. Something subtle has changed and the bloodwork may clarify what it means.
Ulrich I was tempted to ask the custom layout guy at the trainshow how much work he did. It's a nosey question, but I am not interested in if he makes $100 a year or $200K a year. I can't imagine having someone else build my railroad. I guess if you have money but no time, tools or skills it is appealing but you would be missing out on creating something.
Reinhard - Hope you get a good report Monday. Have you ever had you blood sugar checked ?
Henry - what a neat tidbit of history. Where did you find that ?
Chessie reinhardUsually they say "everything looks fine", this time it was "we need to see you again next Monday". Don't know what to make of that except that lately I have been feeling tired and loosing energy more rapidly.
Usually they tell you what they are thinking. Sometimes not because they do not want to alarm you. You had several tests, and so while your physician saw them, he might be waiting for some of them to be read by anogher doctor (Radiologist, Cardiologist etc.) And some tests take a week or so to run. Normally they say that they will call you with the results. Clearly he (she?) is seeing something and wants to wait for more results, and if seese something will want to refer you to a specialist.
Afternoon.
A large cop o' mud is needed after my doctor visit. Went through the usual litany of tests, EKG, prostate, etc. Usually they say "everything looks fine", this time it was "we need to see you again next Monday". Don't know what to make of that except that lately I have been feeling tired and loosing energy more rapidly.
YGW - yeah, last week two 12 hour days and one 14 hour. Ten years ago, or even five years ago I had no problem with that. After the tenth hour on Saturday I felt something dragging behind me. I turned around and saw it was my butt. Lets see what the doctor says.
Ulrich - sorry to hear of your neighbor problems. Not sure of German law but can you call the cops and get them on disturbing the peace.
Chris - any name for the white cat?
All the best.
Joe F
