edit Another tragic and totally preventable accident in Philadelphia.  An Amtrak train ran into, what is being reported as an Amtrak backhoe on the tracks.  The only pictures they are showing is a Loram Railvac unit, a pic of a tire which could be from the back hoe and a smashed loco windshield and a car with a hole punched through the window.  Maybe it's too windy to put the helicopter up.

How can they not tell the guy running the backhoe when the next train comes by?  They just held a news conference which I caught on a live feed, and Amtrak said less than I have said.  NTSB is on the way.

Mornin' everyone!  yep, still morning here in the Finger Lakes Region for a few more minutes.

Zoe, I just need another pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Roast Coffee to help me wake up...

Today is changable....  Sun, Snow, Clouds, Snow, Sun, Wind, Sun, Snow.......  The old saying about the Finger Lakes holds true today.  If you don't like the weather, just wait a minute!

Not sure what the rest of the day will bring...  Probably will go over to my son's house and give Granddaughter #1 her guitar lesson and stay for dinner.  Calling for 3 to 5" of fluffy white stuff today and tonight so the roads will not be good.  My son now works over in Cayuga County and they have advised no unnessesary travel.  Not sure if he is working today or not.  Currently 25°F outside with a high of 32°F maybe later...

Have a good one and stay safe wherever you are!

Good Afternoon!

It´s past 5pm, so it´s "Happy Hour"! Zoe, pour the guys whatever poison they´d like to have and put all of it on my tab, if you please ...

Make that a myu load of decaf for me, please.

I am suffering from a series of dizzy spells all day long, making me "fuzzy" and nervous. I will go and see my doc about it - he may have to change my medication. No MRRing today, as I have difficulties to see properly.

For whatever reason I seem to have access to MRVP and it´s a pity I can´t make use of this opportunity. Such is my luck Crying

Happy B-Day - Dennis, I hope you are having a wonderful

Mr. B - How can you drink beer and be Diabetic ?

I'm a bad boy.

Seriously, my A1C was close to 10 (very bad) before I started my medication and exercise.  Now it's around 6.  My doctor says he tries to get his "managed" patients in the 7 range, so he has told me a couple of times that I get a gold star, which I have yet to receive.  I tell him that "we" have achieved this, because I think it's a partnership between me and my doctor.  He listens to me about how I feel, whereas so many doctors just read the numbers.  I had great numbers on Metformin, too, but I felt terrible.

I'm 69 years old.  I tell people I'd rather have 15 more years of steak and beer than 20 more years of brown rice and vitamin water.  I generally take care of myself, but I'm not interested in a life of deprivation if I can help it.

Flo can my make my Grandfathers Mish Mash?  Soft boiled eggs, bacon and cottage cheese, all mixed up in a bowl.

I thought I was here yesterday, but maybe not.  Good news from doctors is a good thing Ulrich.  And a sold house for Der, always a good feeling when you sell a house.

Soldered a couple feeders Friday and my old soldering skills had deserted me.  I got one of those soldering stations that Randy recommended and some 60/40 electrical solder branded Bernzomatic.  Boogered up a couple ties in the process.  Yesterday my skills returned, plus I switched solder.  The Bernzomatic to have a higher melting point than I expected.

It was rainy yesterday, then the temp started dropping.  35 mph winds last night and this morning and Spring has left us.  It's only 40 degrees and still blowing.

Happy Birrthday to you Mate.  Happy B-DayChef     So glad you had a good day and had some fun.   Also glad to hear you had some good luck in getting your car repaired reasonably.

I had to work today and tomorrow, so I was reading all the latest news stories here before hitting the sack, which I will now do.

YGW>  Vancouver is on the west coast of Canada, just a few miles north of Seattle  . To Alaska is not the lenght of trip that you were thinking. No Cape Horn or Panama canal. Just the Inside Passage.

Ulrich, great news on the health front. But, still do as you are told by the Doc. and Petra.  It is a slow go, but you can lose some weight if you set your mind to it.

Cuda Ken,  Sorry about the slow Saturday at work. We know how hard you try for those Spiffs.

YGW It depends on how your body reacts to it and the long term A1C test. In my case I react badly to white bread, but not too potato's.

By the way YGW. Did you happen to find any C&O decales in the box I sent you? Last time I saw them was when I brought home the box in the garage / train room. Did get your snail mail today. On the extra, did you see where I said they where a gift from me and hope you can use them?

Far as getting back to K-10 Model Trains, that might be a few week's. With working on the backyard, Dr appoiments for my wife and I plus I need to stay the heck out of the places $ wise for a while. ( I am a Train Junkie)

Der I glad you sold your house, I think? For the last 6 years I have been fighting to keep mine so it seems a little odd to me.

Got to check on the Pizza Luckly I did earlier, wife was cooking it on the Cardboard that it came on? Dinner

Evenin' folks!

Janie, a cup of a french Roast Organic Decaf would suit me well at the moment....

Well....  I spent most of today helping out the R&GV RR Museum at the Greenburg Show in Rochester.  Talked to a bunch of people and handed out some information to several people.  The big reason I decided to drive all the way to Rochester though was that I was hoping to have a few of my NMRA members that haven't signed the petition yet come over and sign.  One did!  One....  That's all.  There were a couple more members with him that he was going to send over to the table, but they never showed.  The guy that runs the booth has the petition at the moment in case anyone shows up to sign tomorrow....

It has been threatening rain most all day, and now it has rained and turned to Sn*w out there.  1" to 3" of the white stuff tonight and again tomorrow...

My kitties are feeling a bit better and are both eating again (and pooping again...)  They didn't eat anything for several days and hadn't gone poop for about 4 or 5 days....  They will get another dose of hairball meds tonight before bedtime.  I was getting worried about them.

Well finished remodeling for the evening, Got all of the trim off and back up in the family room,Breakfast room, 1/2 the foyer and reinstalled the shoe mold, patched one drywall hole, cleaned the mess, put away all of the tools... I was smarter about todays work. I took three Ibuprofen BEFORE I started this morning. Not in near as much pain as I was last week at the end of the day. Cool

Angel - That would be nice with a location

Der - Vancouver to Alaska ? That is a long boat ride ! Would it have to go around the horn or through the canal ?

Krump - That looks like an expensive repair for someones RR !

Lion - Funny picture with the passenger car on the rail !

Mr. B - How can you drink beer and be Diabetic ?

Ulrich - Glad you are hearing better news from the ole sawbones

the locations thing tends to ie out as the month goes along, fun while it lasts, but I don't think everyone pays much attention. I try to point out places here in the USA the bulk of our viewers here MIGHT get to go see Cool. whereas Ulrich can point out places we mihgt only dream of seeing.

Probably next month or so we'll bring it back up again. I know some people miss it.

A wet Good Afternoon one and all.
Well, quite the 48 hours!  I may have mentioned that we encouraged our daughter and BF to find alternate accommodation a while ago, now that all the grandchildren have left the nest – and this was accomplished – the last thing being the removal by them of the garden shed from behind the property last week.  That gave a clear field of fire, so to speak, for a house clearing outfit to remove all the junk they and their friends had left. The realtor we had engaged gave us a lead on suitable firms, together with a cleaning company who followed the house clearers on March 31st. The listing was to take effect today April 2nd.  Last evening at dinner time we had a call from the realtor – we had an offer! (As you may be aware, real estate listings are shared between companies 48 hours before going public. At least, that’s the Canadian model) So the offer was ridiculous and we countered. They came back but we held firm. Our realtor phoned at breakfast this morning – the buyers had a couple of questions – we answered as best we could – and 30 minutes later we had a deal!  So, PTL! Angel a huge load is off our minds. So much so that there is now talk of our taking the 50th anniversary trip we didn’t get last year. A cruise from Vancouver to Alaska, which has now morphed into a two-couples trip with our long time friends who moved to Vancouver Island in 2014. Better yet there is talk – instigated by SWIMBO no less, and unprompted!– of a side trip on Alaska Rail! Such is the power  of not having the expenses of two houses to pay each month!
(by Garry) Der John ... Say hello from me to Krump. Better yet, ask him to visit the Diner again for some coffee.
He posted on my FB page today – so I did just that by way of “Comment”  We shall see.  Well veni, vidi! I see he beat me to it! Welcome back!

LION: I saw this and thought you might be interested, since it’s   related.

Ulrich: Great news about your improved medical prognosis - even if today isn't so brilliant. Angel we’ll be rooting for you in the kg shedding battle.  Thanks for the Porthmadoc video  - as you may recall, my layout plans call for a small narrow gauge line which tips its hat firmly in that direction!
On the Layout Front, my framed up doors are supposed to be separable should the layout have to be moved out of the basement. So, I went back tomy plan and discovered that I had far too many tracks crossing the join. Not a good thing. So, in reviewing the plan in SCARM I found that most  of those were associated with trackage I had drawn in back when my interchange was across the lower part of the layout.  Erasing those, and deciding that really I’d rather have industries than that turntable has simplified the plan dramatically. So, here’s what is currently being transferred to the Styrofoam sub-road bed:
The dashed blue line is to show the position of the join. Those industries are “generic” and the building shapes are not like the law of the Medes and Persians “which changeth not neither can it be altered.” Further to that they could just as easily cross the line since they are not as critical to separation as is the track.
Well, I see it’s tea time. So, I’ll go check on how the bread is rising, and then get back to drawing track on the layout. Windows 10 decided to update this morning; and in the time THAT took I drew out the entire interchange yard!

It´s been a sunny day, but rather boring, as I do not feel well. Funny, the doc said he sees improvement, but why don´t I feel like it?

I am not a talkative fellow today, so I just stay at the RC for a sip of decaf.

Good morning, everyone!  I had a great bike ride yesterday, the second in two days, but today is cold and rainy, and the forecast for the next 2 days is ... snow.  Bah.  It looks like I'll be back to the gym for another week.  For now, though, I got plenty of exercise, and I've started to understand the effects of my diabetes medication:  A day without exercise means the next day without energy.

I had a great time listening to good old rock 'n' roll last night, drinking a couple of beers and even dancing.  The wife absolutely hates the music we grew up with, so I go by myself, meet new friends and have a great time.  This time, I went a bit out of my way to hear a band that isn't scheduled for some time at my regular haunts.  Last night's venue is larger and much better suited to this kind of music.  They can crank it up and there's a big enough dance floor for everyone.

Well you caught the newbie here again - aprils fools its not the march diner.

So get me some grog and gruel - please miss can I have some more...

So my layout was going great all winter - cold kept the crap on the rails firm. Now we are into summer (in the south) that gung is getting slippery. Time to pull out the track cleaners.

My GG1 pulls good on dirty track but has 12 drive wheels - my PRR T1 only have 8 which is not good enough.

So my ERIE-BUILT PROTO 1000 PRR PA (heavy) unit will have to pull the track cleaning cars for a number of hours.

This is not a problem for me - I'll get the PA unit going and then sit and listen to rock 104 while I sip on "Captain M and coke" and watch the progress of the rails become clean.

With all of the talk lately of loosing some serious pounds, here is my soft rant on losing weight. Bottom line, losing weight takes a lot of time and effort. Here it is, by the numbers.

First, a pound of fat contains 3,500 calories. This means to lose 1 pound of fat, you need to consume 3,500 less calories than you burn. For this example, let's assume you are trying to loose 2.5 pounds per week or 10 pounds per month--a differential of 7,000 calories.

Next, a male needs to eat 1,500-1,800 calories per day. (The bigger you are, the higher the base number.) Any less, and you screw up your body's metabolism, actually making weight loss more difficult.

Finally, a 55-year-old, 6'0" male, weighing 280lbs, doing nothing at all but sitting around, will burn approximately 3000 calories, just by living. (Note: The smaller you are, the lower the sedentary burn rate. The same male weighing 180lbs will only only burn 2400 calories.)

Put all of this together, and, in order for our 280lb man to loose 2.5 pounds per week, he can eat no more than 1,750 calories per day, pretty close to the bare minimum for someone of his size. This would be impossible for our 180lb man, as he would only be able to consume 1,150 calories per day.

So, for our 280lb man to lose more than 2.5 pounds per week, he must add exercise to the equation. The good news is that the bigger you are, the more calories you burn by doing something, anything. If our subject was to walk 2.5 mph for 60 minutes, he would burn 380 calories. Still a tall order, though--to loose another pound a week, he would need to walk for 9.2 hours during the week. If he were healthy enough to increase his pace to 3.5mph, a brisk walk, he is now up to 500 calories/hour, or 7 hours of walking to loose that extra pound.

The numbers for a couple of other exercises--

  • Swimming laps, freestyle, moderate pace: 1050 calories/hour; 3.3 hours for a pound
  • Bicycling, 10-12mph: 890 calories/hour; 4 hours for a pound
  • Running, 12-minute mile: 1200 calories/hour; 3 hours for a pound

As I said at the beginning, a lot of time and effort. My hat is off to all of you that have dropped the significant pounds. It shows real commitment and dedication. The rest who are still working on it, make sure to adjust your expections. Do not expect "Biggest Loser" kinds of numbers, unless you have nothing else to do but live in a gym.

If I can work out the placement then I can move forward with the permit process and then start digging ftg. Hopefully I can break ground with in a couple of months maybe three ?

Well, good news there, Ulrich!  Are there any of us here who could not stand to lose a few pounds, or kilograms?  I'm hoping to drop some as the weather warms up and I can get on my bicycle.  The gym has been good for my mandatory exercise and the strength training, but the treadmill is so dreadfully boring.

Henry, I hope your blood sugar issues are temporary, or possibly related to whatever they're giving you for the potassium problem.  I've never been much of a sugar guy, and I hardly ever eat desserts and drink my coffee black (yes, another cup please) but I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 2 years ago.  Oh, well, that regimen is part of my life now.  It's been a blessing in disguise, though, as I'm now getting significantly more exercise and I now look and feel much better.

Quote of the day:

"One day we are going to die, Snoopy!

Yes, but all other days not!"

Good Afternoon!

There seems to be a silver lining on the horizon concerning my ongoing heart issues. My cardiologist told me this morning, that things have not turned worse over the last months, in fact, he thinks there is some slight improvement. Which means, that I may eventually do not have to undergo further surgery! He told me to unload that 60 lbs. bag I am carrying with me - with Petra´s cooking, that´s going to be hardship!

No news on the MRRing front, other than I have ordered a Swiss bus stop sign in Switzerland (whereelse to get such a detail?). Outrageously expensive at about $ 20, half of which is shipping, but for that I get a brass hand-built sign. Takes about a month to get here...

Angelob - thanks for opening this month´s diner! I think we should have different people doing the honors each month. After all, the diner is not a "Sir Madog private show"...

Anybody care to join me at the RC for someCoffee ?
