 Evening Dinners

Flo, Beer please, trains are being mean to me tonight. Sigh

Just stopped by to wish Dennis a Happy B-Day and a belated Happy B-Day to Steve.

Dennis Do you have a layout? Do not remember reading about anything train wise from you?

Steve Would you mind post a few pictures of your layout? We like to look! Big Smile

 Later, Ken

Since I decided to skip my workout today because of the snow, I figured I should get something useful done.  So, I pulled out the soldering iron and the rest of the small wiring tools and replaced the motor in that subway car.  I've had the parts for a couple of weeks, but I just hadn't gotten around to it.  Today was the day, and it's running fine once again.

Oh, Mr.Otte: now is the time, if you haven't already, to join that esteemed organization: AARP! You will get 15% off your tab at Denny's and other places!

Also, Mr. Otte, it is time to invest in a CANE for those days your back, knees or hips don't quite cooperate! That is one reason for the hiking of the pants to the navel....to act as support trusses!

Age always has its revenge!

Now the cable company made us go through all this crap to avoid a service call, which would be great if any of the things they had BOTH of us try hadn't already been done before and still no TV! So tomorrow between 11and noon some tech is supposed to be here...now watch the tuner bix will be fried!

Now to fight over AOL NOT online tomorrow... At least I showed MOH how to load AOL on the smart phone so MOH could do work reports without the computer.

On THAT front, we had a Long talk about what each needo from the other to make this work. We each need improvement naturally, and I ALWAYS do or try to do exactly any and all requests registered by MOH, now let's see if MOH makes the efforts to change the things I've requested.

I have PT tomorrow morning for the knee and hip. I believe I have torn something behind the knee cap so I don't know what the stupid insurance company  thinks PT is going to do! And in order to get the MRI to find out you HAVE to go through PT first. Stupid stupid stupid.  if I HAVE torn something the it could be damaged further. That's the issue with my neck the two herniated discs aren't going away due to traction, in fact THAT gave me multiple migraine headaches! Then the MRI showed the two herniated discs. I know someone they almost paralyzed with PT on her neck when she really had a slipped disc! But that is how the stupid stupid insurance company works.

Well more snow and cold tomorrow. I think we got more snow in the last two days than all winter.

Well about time for this old man to go to bedMr . B: congratulations on getting the diabetes under control and fighting the battle of the buldge so many of us do! I still would suggest what I suggested in my PM...best of luck to you on that front!

Bed is calling me and the battery needs to be charged.

Had a beautiful weekend; yard work on Saturday; and Sunday, I sat on the patio, and built car kits.  Built a Santa Fe Accurail covered hopper that had a lot more detail than I was expecting; have three more just like to do.  Then started on a Kato 3 pack of Monon 70 ton covered hoppers; got one finished, then one of the hatch latches fell off, and I spent an hour looking for it. I did find it, once I got everything else picked up.

I also tuned about 20 freight cars; checking coupler heights, gauging wheelsets, etc., working through cars that haven't been run since we last set up our modules 4 years ago...

Have issues with a couple of engines; not sure if I will get those ironed out.  The 2-10-2 ran well last week.  The Monon F7s ran, but the headlight didn't come on.  Don't know if that is a CV issue or if the bulb is burned out.  Need to get the CF7's tuned; and decoders in my GP7s, too.

Remember the tin can; the MKT's central Texas branch...

Steven Otte
I turned 51 on Sunday. I am now allowed to hike my pants up to my navel and yell at kids to get off my lawn.

Not to worry, you still have four more years before you can order off of the back page of the Denny's menu.

This was a busy weekend for me in the Valley of the Sun. The weather has been a little warm for this time of the year, but what are you going to do. The annual El Tour de Mesa was held here on Saturday. It is a bike ride/event that attracts a couple thousand riders. There are four rides, ranging from a 4-mile fun ride to the 72-mile main event. This year I rode in the Bike Patrol for the 28-mile ride. Basically, my job was to ride the course and render assistance, as required. There was a little wind, but the temperature was between 65 and 75. All in all, a great morning.

On Sunday I played the piano in my piano teacher's recital. (Second time) Once again, I was old enough to be the grandfather of every other student, except for one, and I was certainly old enough to be her father. My performance wasn't perfect, but I did it. I am learning the more often you step out of your comfort zone, the easier it becomes.

Good morning.

Happy birthday to V8-Vega and Steve O.  The birthdays just seem to keep rolling along.  My younger daughter celebrated her 43 last week.  Where have all the years gone?

I'm blown away by our little town of 14,000 symphony orchestra which performed yesterday afternoon in the newly renovated theater.  The college choir also performed.  They had a guest cellist perform Grieg's cello concerto with the orchestra.  The orchestra also performed Beethoven's 5th Symphony.  Really nice afternoon concert.  The new theater is providing really good perfromanaces a couple times a month.  Hope they are successful.

Krump, the cross Canada to Alaska trip looks like a good way to lighten the wallet.  Do love Alaska but haven't been in over 15 years.  The last trip was absolutely awesome as we camped in Denali and had very clear weather for four days.  Could see Mt. McKinley, aka Denali for almost a complete week.

Der, getting rid of a second house payment must be a huge relief.  Been there, done that.

Starting on fabricating another turnout today.  This is the second for the lead into the planned yard.  After today, two more turnouts to go.  Still need to put down one more homosote roadbed piece going into the four track yard. Still enjoying hand laying track.  Every time I fabricate a turnout I think of the $25 dollars saved buying manufactured turnouts.

Well, I am also ready to go next door and see if I can start the neighbors lawnmower that has been sitting in his yard for about a week.  He isnt the most mechanically inclined guy in the world.  I think it just needs a shot of carb cleaner to get going.

Later, all.

Mornin' everyone!  What's all the commotion in here about?  What?  Oh......   Ahem...  Sing along!

Hippo, Birdie, Two Ewes
Hippo, Birdie, Two Ewes
Hippo, Birdie, Deer, Steven.....
Hippo, Birdie, Two Ewes!

And many many more!!!

We had a nice Spring here in the Finger Lakes this year.  It was on a Wednesday around 4 PM I think.  Right now everything is all white and cold out there.  the robins and other birds are eating the rest of the berries from the Flowering Quince Tree in my yard as there are no earthworms or other bugs to be had today.  If they freeze to death, they will at least be happy as they should be drunk as all get out from the berries..... Current temperature here is 24°F with a high of... 29°F maybe....  Just maybe.

Several area schools started two hours late this morning so the crews could get salt out on the roads for safety.  Road out in front of my house is just slushy at the moment.  I have a dentist appointment early this afternoon to get the three crowns put in finally!  By tonight I will be able to eat on both sides of my mouth.  Have to make an appoint to get one of my hearing aids repaired today also, and have to do the grocery shopping sometime.  Right now I have to disappear to the basement to get the wash started!

Catch you all later!

Just on my way back from Lowes and the post office so dropped in for another cup of Flo's 40w. Had to get a spade drill so I could feed the cable for my Prodigy extension box thing through the framework and pick up the stuff from the post office to wire my turnout motors. Happy Birthday Steven.

Happy B-Day

Happy Birthday, Steven!  I had one last month.  May you endure many more.  Since I've started biking regularly and going to the gym when the weather is bad, I've flipped the aging toggle and I'm now getting younger every day.  OK, not chronologically, but I feel like it and that's what counts.  The best part is when some younger lady at the bar expresses shock when she finds out how old I am.

Last Thursday it was 72 degrees here and I was out on that bike in shorts and a bike jersey.  Today it's 24 degrees and I'm trying to figure out what form of precipitation is actually falling.  I know one thing - today is a gym day.  I'm going to try running that SD-9, too.  Lucky SD-9.  It gets a whole big layout to run around on, and all I get is a treadmill.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Good morning, all! As tough as it is to get back to work on a Monday, it's even harder the Monday after your birthday weekend. Cake I turned 51 on Sunday. I am now allowed to hike my pants up to my navel and yell at kids to get off my lawn. Or I would if I gave a darn about how my lawn looks. Chloe, dish up some of that strawberry cake to anyone who wants some.

Springtime in Wisconsin. It snowed Saturday. Yesterday was in the 50s. Saw some snowflakes again this morning. Make up your mind, weather.

Anyway. You may have noted we didn't have an MR staff Layout Progress tour this year. That's because nobody had any progress to show. I've done very little work on my home layout last year, Andy Sperandeo passed away, Jim Hediger retired, David Popp got rid of his layout, and three other staff members don't have home layouts. However, there is a development. There's serious discussion about starting round-robin work sessions among the staff to kick start home layouts for Eric, Cody, and Dana. I spent the past weekend cleaning my basement to make it presentable to guests in preparation for this. Even if the round-robin thing doesn't come off, I'm excited about the idea of having people over to restart work on my HO scale 1906 CL&N. So next year, fingers crossed, there may be a lot of progress to show. Big Smile

Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have an extra large coffee with lots of cream, please.

Weather has been really strange here.  30s on Saturday with horizontal snow and high winds off and on. Fortunately, the ground is too warm to really stick. Yesterday, it got up to 70 and sunny.  Now, today supposed to be in low 40s.

Big SmileBig Smilehey, this is April.  Enough already.

Glad to see you all are doing good and everyone is healthy for the most part.

No MRR news to report.

Mr. B. I'm with you on the 15 years with vs 20 without.  Although, I must confess I stopped eating wheat voluntarily.  I'm not allergic, but I found when I stopped, I had more energy and was much more alert.  About 10 years ago or so I discovered through rather exhaustive experimentation that beer knocks me out.  Should have taken a clue from that.  Anyway, my enjoyment of wine has not been hindered.

Big Smile

Hello to all and I hope everyone isOK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

Good Afternoon!

What a day! We had a temperature jump up to the proximity of 20°C, making my BP to go the opposite direction. It´s in the basement right now and has no intention to come up again.

I went to see my doc about those dizzy spells I keep on having. As it looks, they are due to some of my medication, which has to be changed or even stopped. We will see. I am not giving much thought to that, whatever will happen, happens!

Started to watch some videos on MRVP. There is a series about building a On30 looging layout called Olympia Logging. That´s a wonderful small layout, which both fits my needs and my space! Had I known this earlier...

A new face in here - a big Welcome to you, Erie-Diamond! Flo, get that man a Beer or aDrinks, whatver he likes to have!

There was some talk about moveing the Diner to a new location each month. Some of you may remeber that I moved the Diner to interesting places to visit and provided Photos and videos on that location. This is quite an effort to do so and I am afraid I won´t be able to do that regularly.

We have not yet chosen a location for this month, so let´s go to a rather exotic place this time - Norway! Norway has lots to see in terms of railroading. The most spectacular train rides are certainly

  • Flamsbana (Flam to Myrdal)
  • Bergensbana (Oslo to Bergen)
  • Malmbana from Kiruna to Narvik

Let´s have a look at the Flamsbana today.

The Flåm Line (Norwegian: Flåmsbana) is a 20.2-kilometer (12.6 mi) long railroad line between Myrdal and Flåm in Aurland, Norway. A branch line of the Bergen Line, it runs through the valley of Flåmsdalen and connects the mainline with Sognefjord. The line's elevation difference is 863 meters (2,831 ft); it has ten stations, twenty tunnels and one bridge. The maximum gradient is 5.5 percent (1:18). Because of its steep gradient and picturesque nature, the Flåm Line is now almost exclusively a tourist service and has become the third-most visited tourist attraction in Norway.

(Source: Wikipedia)

Enjoy!

Norway has a small but very active model railroad manufacturer called NMJ, which stands for Norsk Model Jernbane A/S

Very nice models, but not on the cheap!

Good morning all. Gotta love Flo's coffee.  Been up since 5:00AM so down loaded photobucket so maybe I can get some photos posted of the layout I've started. Been on theses forums since back in oh-2 but other then being involved with a club when I was able, it's just been arm chairing. Toggle switches, LEDs and push buttons should be in today so will start wiring switch machines and get control panels built and installed for them.

V8Vega - sorry for your loss.  Tough times those.

I think that winter is finally over, here in BC.  I can tell because the "snowbirds" have returned from Arizona etc, and the offering at church took twice as long to count because of all the extra envelopes (that's a good thing though) Cowboy. snow is gone, weather is nice - time for a controlled burn on the yard.

I need a mocha please.

cheers, krump

Hi all

Flat white and a full English breakfast please I need some real food.

Sir Madoc

good to hear things on the health front apear to be on the up

I liked the bus with som passangers not some thing you see a lot of but then one of the bonuses with small layouts is the time for that extra detail touch.

Can't find the post but some one comented on Subway in the bush

so here is a list of the fast food joint's we have in town

Subway, Dominoes, Macdonalds X2,  Hungry Jack's Thats Aussie for burger king.

Then there is Kentucky fried chicken, Red Rooster, Chicken treat.

then there are the usual non chain pizza places lebanese and asian food outlets

and fish and chip shops.

go 423 km from us to Esperance and you have Macdonals, Red rooster, Subway

and the non chainstore food outlets most of the bigger bush towns have at least one of the chain fast food outlet as well as a local based take away.

Maybe that should be another must have town structure on a layout a suitable period take away joint.

regards John

My neighbor has a weather station, but one side of his yard faces a woods, so his 36 mph was probably low.  The airport registered 45 mph. We've seen higher during hurricaines but that was unusual just for front coming through.

I was listening to Broadcastify, which among other radio traffic, monitors CSX & Amtrak and a freight train hit a downed tree north of Baltimore.  No major damage

One train said it was ditching and not trammeling.  What did they mean?

Evenin' diners....

Janie, just need another cup of decaf to keep me warm at the moment.....

The Winter Weather advisory for the area has now expired....  It has been replaced with a Winter Storm Warning for tonight and tomorrow morning!  3 to 6" of the white stuff tonight and 2 more expected tomorrow morning meaning leading to storm totals of 6 to 9" by noon time tomorrow....  Wind gusts upo to 30mph won't help the driving with this either.  Would think that several area shools will be closed tomorrow which is supposed to be the first day back after vacation.

Hi Krump!  Good to see you back.  Been a while I think!

Went over to my son's house late this afternoon to give Grandaughter #1 her guitar lesson.  She did pretty well and may have even practiced a couple times.  Then we had a speghetti supper and for dessert we each got about a 4" x 4" hunk of Homemade Brownie with several scoops of vanillaq ice cream and chocolate syrup on it all for desert.  The brownie was baked by Granddaughter #1.  She is becoming quite the baker in the family at 3rd. grade.....  Weather was gettig nasty by the time I headed home....

The replacement bumper/cowling for the PiP should be arriving this week.  Probably will be installed the week after that.  That is good as this coming week is going to be crazy with something going on every day.  Tomorrow I should get 3 new crowns in stalled in my mouth.

Hope everyone has a great night!  Stay safe and warm.....

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please.

Work Was better today, not great but better than a stick in the eye.

MisterBeasley
Did I really need another locomotive? No. I was good and passed right by the Athearn SD-9 in Milwaukee colors, used, of course, for $50. Good thing, too, because 3 minutes later I found another one for $25. Did I need another project?

Mr B Boy I know that feeling! When I started this hobby 10 years ago I enjoyed fixing project engines and cars and getting them running! Learned a lot from the junk I bought. Now days? Whistling I hate working on the stuff? Maybe it is because I went DCC, DC stuff is easier to work on. Plus if I make a mistake, there was not a $30.00 decoder that got BBQ'ed. I hate to guess how many engines I have that need to repair, I would bet 15 if not higher.

Speaking Of BBQ Decoders I got the replacment decoder from Digitrax last Friday for the one I cooked in my PK1000 F-3.

YGW Yes I am a train junkie, no other way to say it. In the last 2 months I have bought 11 pices of rolling stock. Not bad I guess, not like when I got started and was buying 5 a week. But, I have 150 cars wrapped up and in boxes and the layout has around 100 + on it. Then there is the 40 or so project cars that have never been on the layout?

Depending on the weather, I may make it to K-10 this Thursday. If it is Storm I will go. Other wise I will be working on the back yard.

 Later, Ken

Hey folks

Johnboy - Bit embarrased. My knowledge of Canada geography is very limited and for some reason I thought Vancouver was on the east coast. OOOOPs Thanks.

DER - Sorry I thought you lived on the east coast of Canada. Is it pretty rural where you are ? Our  Pastor spoke on if your really believe Jesus is coming back you would live your life differently. We also had Baptisms today. Two women and three men were Baptized. Really good Sunday !

Howmus - Is your granddaughter a natural with teh music lessons ?

Ulrich - Glad you are going to the doctor. That needs to be checked

Mr. B - LOL ! " I am a bad boy " reminded me of Abbot and Costello line

Henry - Did you get the predicted 66 mile an hour winds ? We recieved extremely strong sustained winds. In fact we lost power for several hours.

V8 Happy birthday Cake - that sound like a nice present to yourself

Ken - No decals. Yes thanks for the gifts. We were also discussing wheels for sale. I can wait for whenever you next get out there. No rush. "Train Junkie" comment made me laugh. Do you remember the old Jerry Reed song " Junk food junkie" ? Maybe he should redo the songs for guys like us "Train Junkies" ! Headphones

Galaxy - How are you ?

Chessie yes I saw the PM. Will respond later. Looking forward to the meet.

Gotta run. Hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekends.

Did I really need another locomotive?  No.  I was good and passed right by the Athearn SD-9 in Milwaukee colors, used, of course, for $50.  Good thing, too, because 3 minutes later I found another one for $25.  Did I need another project?  No, but at that price I couldn't pass it up.

Got a couple of vehicles (tow truck and milk delivery truck) and a Bragdon rock mold, too.

YGW:
Der - Vancouver to Alaska ? That is a long boat ride ! Would it have to go around the horn or through the canal ?
Très drôle!  In this case the «  canal » is « The InsidePassage » firstly between the Mainland and Vancouver Island past Campbell River (an old stomping ground of ours) and then between the mainland and  various other islands – see https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Inside+Passage/@54.8250805,-132.6657407,8z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x540da90c5a05e34d:0xd20ee4bdb6539686 and it there was ever a case for copy and paste, that puppy may be it ! Ken :
Der I glad you sold your house, I think? For the last 6 years I have been fighting to keep mine so it seems a little odd to me.
…and so it might Ken were it our home. But this house is one we bought (basically with inheritance money as down payment) for our daughter and 3 little kids to have a place to live better than the really cruddy apartment she lived in when SILv1.0 walked out for another woman on Christmas Eve 2001.  She didn’t have any income except Social Services – and that doesn’t cut it. So in Feb we found her this place – and it has served its purpose as shelter until the kids have grown and left.  In that time they collectively managed to trash it and the appliances. No permanent partner appeared to resolve matters. Now the kids are gone SS cut her income – so even less came to us for paying bills and upkeep. But a partner has been around since last summer and actually works! I referred to him as BF yesterday but really we think of him as SILv2.0  We’ve finally got them to move out and clear their stuff. They have a nice-enough apartment in the same town and he has a new job closer to home than his last.  We took a bath on the selling price – but it covers our needs which are to pay off the mortgage on our home, pay the real estate, and the lawyer.  Not having to face the upkeep bills each month has spurred talk of the cruise.  So, each one’s life is different. Should we have been hard hearted and left them to it years ago? I guess one’s treasure is where one’s heart is. Were we victims of emotional; blackmail over the years?  Doubtless, yes.  Have we ever cooked Pizza on its card? Doubtless, yes! Do we now? No. Apply that to the rant above if you are so minded – it’s not easy to answer.

And a sold house for Der, always a good feeling when you sell a house.
Huge relief –and Thanksgivings – despite the price. So yes we feel very grateful – digging out the Deed and seeing the lawyer tomorrow. The realtor has the deposit cheque. Yeah Saw a bit of that wreck on the news here.  Thoughts and prayers for the families.Angel

Mister Beasley:
Seriously, my A1C was close to 10 (very bad) before I started my medication and exercise.  Now it's around 6.  My doctor says he tries to get his "managed" patients in the 7 range, so he has told me a couple of times that I get a gold star, which I have yet to receive.  I tell him that "we" have achieved this, because I think it's a partnership between me and my doctor.  He listens to me about how I feel, whereas so many doctors just read the numbers.  I had great numbers on Metformin, too, but I felt terrible.
Congratulations on the “6”  It took me ages to get down below that 7 – and now I’m in the throes of my Spring and Fall “Blood Sugars Be Crazy” season. Can’t explain it – neither can the Drs. But I find that if you are motivated and keep good records they go along with you in looking for solutions.

I’ll have the Tuna Melt on Multi-grain with a side of fresh asparagus and grilled tomatoes please – and Dark Roast the way Ray likes it; please and thank you.
Decided to add a spur to one of the industry tracks - gives a raw materials / finished goods possibility for the cars. I'd show a pic but it turns out I didn't save the changes.Bang Head Anyway the industry has been re-configured to allow room for a decent road past it at the same time as adding the extra spur.

Sunday or not, that line of tracks is always busy. Ergo a train is ALWAYS to be expected there. Does not the MOW crew have its own watchers with radions out at all times.

Maybe the watcher whistled all off of the tracks, and the backhoe pivioted to comply and got cautht with his pants down, as it were.

TRACKS is dangerous place!
