Ken: I'll find out what the MRI's showed on Monday but one of the nurses said to me that it looked like the Mitral Valve was not working very well....

Evenin' folks!

Janie, another cup of decaf would do nicely right now...

The meeting tonight went very well, and a bunch of issues were brought to the table and answers are in the offing....  Very worthwhile.

I hadn't heard the thing about hot water and bleach either...  One thing I should have been more clear on the Scout method for weekend camping is the use of rinse first, then wash in hot soapy water, rinse again and then either Bleach water or the boiling water.  Four steps.  Been a few years since I was teaching that to the troops... Air drying is the prefered method after the washing.  I know that in the kitchen at camp similar methods are demanded by the health department and you do not towel dry the dishes...  Ever!  Again the last rinse in the dishwaher out there contained a disinfective agent and used boiling water (lots and lots of steam!!!).  Then the trays of dishes, silverware (stainless actually) were air dryed, then put in the stacks to be used again.  Pots and pans were usually hand scrubbed, then run through the dishwasher.

Got my sister home to her Kitties this afternoon...  She was running on adrenaline I think.  She had been on flights for over 30 hours and no sleep.....  I was a good trip though.

Have a good night!

Galaxy I feel your pain dealing with incompetent people.

Modeltrainstuff is about 50 minutes away.  I am going there bright and early to buy track and the stuff to convert my very first DCC/sound loco.  It may take a while to put it on track since the layout is on paper only and I don't even have a DCC controller

well, I offed a letter the mortgage orriginator, for his help before I offed a letter to the Attorney General of NYS alerting them to the mis-management of our mortgage account by not properly applying the PRINCIPLE ONLY payment of $1,241.27 over the regular mortgage payment due of $567.72 {some of you are jealous...like Perhaps Ken- but Remember KEN: you have a MUCH larger house}.

That is a LOT of money to us to be misplaced and we have more to send extra to principle and we are not doing it until properly acccounted properly.

well, still contemplating life here. Train nut friend has said lately the night mares of finding Christian hanging there in his apartment have been really bad, gtting unbearable, I contacted my mental Health counselor and asked aobut support groups or therapists for them {and us} and she turned me on to a group that meets aparently wednesday at General Hospital [yes its name] called "for those left behind". But When i called the number for info, i got a message recording and left a message. Haven't heard back yet.

Well, bed time

Good Evening

Had a great meal here, got for lunch a garden salad with raspberry/cranberry vinagerret dressing, mongolian-no salt-grilled veggie/beef mix on top of rice and milk and a couple of slices of whole grain bread...tonight it was roast beef on rye with the usual lettuce etc and no salt added pumpkin soup with a yogurt/granola with strawberry/blackberry/peach slices mixed in and a milk as well as tea.

YGW: She knows those people as well, lol!! Both are in the Philipines!!!

Anyway, had a wonderful day with visitors and doctor rounds and all kinds of stuff going on here. My window shelf is now loaded with bunches of flowers...my room smells wonderful now. Whistling

I have a couple of buddies from the neighbourhood here...jamming away...kentuckey bluegrass style. And keeping the floor entertained, lol!!

Anyhow....back to jamming here.

. . .Richard - that is an amazing fact. I had no idea that hot water had that effect on bleach. . .

It is important to note that hot water stops the sanitizing, but not the bleaching effect. It still works to wash your whites in hot water with bleach.

Hey all

Been crazy busy at w**k. walked three units in two weeks, 1 firemarshall sign inspection ( stupid waste of time and monies ) ten final inspections, two Residential use inspections, One elevator inspection ( super pain in the butt ) somehow kept myself together and did not do bodily harm to one HO sales agent and her idiot home inspector who by anybodies standards rightly deserves it ! For this if I were Catholic I think I should have earned the right to be sainted ! It is a Miracle the amount of self restraint I have shown. That lady is holding up a settlement because the gas fireplace gets HOT - WHAT !!!! Bang HeadSuper AngryAngryBang Head Thank God it is Friday !

v8 - LOL It always amuses me the whole thing with you all and rain. Survived another one hey ?

Mr. B - I have this philosphy - do it wrong and they will not ask you to do it again !!! Works for dishes too Whistling

Garry - Nice custom job on the mirrors there ! Man that was a bit close. SIL is not doing well. There are five points in the brain that make decisions. Of those five, three are not working. The other two are not working well either because she is not making wise choices either - like going to see the docs she really needs to see.

Angel - 83 degree ? I am jealous !

Ken - I didnt see any mention of dish soap. Dont you have my number still ? I didnt change it.

UP831 - Dont get discouraged about your affordibilty of locomation. When one boils it down all transportation gets you from point a to b. Has four wheels, brakes, go pedal, steering wheel and a seat. That is all that matters is that it gets you there with out having to walk everything else after that is an excuse to be charged more insurance and higher taxes.

Henry - man that does sound like a bad day. Stay away from the power tools !

Howmus - Cookies ? Like in Oatmeal raison cookies ??? Big Smile Dinner when can I come by !

Lion - you use dishes ? I thought you ate the wildebeast that hung from the tree limb ? How do you do dishes with paws ? Confused

Ulrich - will that grass staticky thing work on bald heads Surprise Boy that would be a site. Hey maybe I could run a little z track under my hat too ?

BO Cylinder watch out for wife and girlfriend thing. Ever heard of Lorena Bobbit ? She cut her husband and threw it in the street as she left him !

Mr. Mick LOL "...calls I haul " you are a wise man !!

Richard - that is an amazing fact. I had no idea that hot water had that effect on bleach

Herring choker - Latrine duty ? Oh gosh that would stink - literally

Loco - I bought my wife one of those fancy mixers. I used to teaser her thatall it really was was a glorified drill press and that if she would just let me I would by a nice Delta drill press and we both could use it !! She didnt think to highly of my suggestion LOL.

John B - I misread your comment first time around I thought it said "...close up work for BIG its..." I thought read t not b Embarrassed oops

FEC - Hey Phil how is it going down in suny Florida ?

Welp gotta run. TTYL

MrMick
Has anyone used one of those static grass thingys? I am thinking of getting one of the economy models, and if anyone can suggest or relate their experience with the process, I would appreciate it.

Well, I have an older model, which is close to the battery operated "fly-swatter"-things, but with a transformer as the power supply. You fill in the grass fibres into the little sieve and gently shake it - ant that´s pretty bad, as some of the stuff does not go to where you want it to be.

A much better choice are those models copying the (expensive) Noch Grassmaster design - take a look at this one:

Static Grass Flock Applicator

Seems to be a reasonable value!

Good Afternoon!

When I came into this place a few moments ago, I thought my Internet connection had gone astray and routed me to a housekeeping forum Laugh

As I am the one in charge of doing the dishes, allow me to add my My 2 Cents worth to the issue.

We mainly use our dishwasher, but before stacking the dishes, cutlery and pots into it, I give them a quick rinse with hot water to clean any food stuff from them. This allows us to run the short cycle which, despite the use of hot water, means a big saving on our energy bill. It also adds to the service life of the dishwasher. Aside from breakfast, which is usually just muesli and coffee, we like to "celebrate" our meals, so that means a lot of dishes. I´d hate to do them by hand - pansd and big pots are all I do by hand.

Enough of this greasy topic, back to model railroading Whistling

I am making slow progress on landscaping my layout. I have decided against giving the layout a winter atmosphere as I have so much landscaping stuff left over from previous projects which I´d like to use up. Money is tight and will even get tighter as we have to face big cuts in our allowance. We will have to sell the car, get rid of any "nice to have" spending and pare down to the absolute minimum to survive on what we will have left. Not really a nice perspective! Now, if I were a Syrian refugee - but stop, this is getting into politics and I better stay out of it, as I see Vinnie has risen from his comfy chair in the back.

I have been doing some more w*rk on the layout today, mainly on the rock faces.

It´s starting to get where I want to be, but it is still a long way. I should paint the bridge and the chapel - that will make a whole lot of difference to the appearance!

I am enjoying this layout and its construction very much - as long as it lasts. I will have to sell it eventually Crying

Good morning, diners; Flo, a cuppa coffee with two creams and a coffee roll, please.

At our place, we use a dishwasher, but the dishes get the  wipe and rinse before they go in to get the big stuff off; if they have any hard stuckon, we generally sponge that off, too.  After that, it's up to the dishwasher to take care of them, end of story.

Except for pots and pans which I am apparently not capable of getting clean enuf  to satisfy Barbara; She thinks I need a course in Remedial Dishwashing. I figure if it's in a pan, it's  hot enuf to 'take care of' anything  that's still left. This is an ongoing conversation, I might add.

Went out skating on the pond out back this A.M.,  and later joining a frined at the motion picute show. Train Nite last night was a lot of fun, operating someone elses trains always is!

Has anyone used one of those static grass thingys? I am thinking of getting one of the economy models, and if anyone can suggest or relate their experience with the process, I would appreciate it.

Barbara calls, I hauls,  see you later, hope all have a good day

How do you folks wash your dishes by hand?

I mostly use the dishwasher, but when I wash by hand, it is a four step process--Scrape and rinse the dish completely (not in the wash or rinse water); Wash the dish in hot water with detergent and a brush; Rinse in hot water; Drip dry.

If you want the sanctioned way to wash dishes, you can follow the National Food Service Management Institute guidelines. A couple of items of note--

  1. Rinsing and sanitizing are two separate steps. Bleach is used in the sanitizing step, not the rinsing step.
  2. If you use bleach, do not put it in hot water. "Hot water stops the bleach from sanizing."

Good morning ...... Coffee and a doughnut, please .

Dishwashers? ... We don't often talk about them. ... There is something to be said for paper plates, I suppose. .... Diners have run out of cats to talk about.

Ken ... Although not your B&O Geep, you might like this drawing.

Also, Ken ..... A shortline in WV has preserved B&O units. I don't recal the name of the shortline, but they do operate tourist trains.

Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have an extra large cup of coffee with boo coo cream, please.

We too, have a dish washer.  Haven't used it in 10 years or more.  Since our son has grown and is on his own, we just don't have that many dishes to wash.  The dishwasher is now used for storage of what else, dishes.

Big SmileBig Smile

We generally rinse the crud off the dishes, then let them soak for several minutes in the suds until the water cools to the point we can stick our hands in it.  Then we wash with sponge/pad combo sponges, rinse in warm running water, and place in dish rack to air dry.  Then we use a towel reserved exclusively for drying dishes to touch up any remaining water drops and put away on the shelf.

Hello to everyone, and I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

I do not know where all of these dirty dishes have come from. The LION does dishes on Sunday. That is others do the dishes on other days.

People bring their trays with their dishes on them to the dishroom window. LIONbangs the big stuff off into the garbage or into the insinkerator. Trays are stacked by the window until they are 9 high, and then put into a rack and fed into the washer, Plates are placed in the racks right away until there are 18 of them, and then these are fed into the washer. Cups and Glases go into the racks on the right of the insinkerator, flatware (nobody would sall the stuff silver around here) are tossed into a bucket. Little dishes, bowls and plates are sorted piles according to their orientation, and then racked and washed after all of the trays are in. Cups and then Classes are washed, and finally the Flatware is dumped into a rack and shoved through the machine. Once this rack comes out I turn off the machine, hose down the counters, clean the traps in the dishwasher (a fairly big Hobard commercial machine). I then sort the flatware into individual baskets, fighting end up, and turning on the dishwasher again, run them through a second time. They are then turned handle end up and brought out to the serving line. The other dishes, trays and stuff are placed where they belong, but the cups and glasses remain in their racks in the dishroom until they are fully dry and then someone else will take them back to the dining room.

Other people do the pots and pans, also called "kettles". We do not hire dish washers but we do hire cooks. Cooks are responsible for cleaning all sharp knives, and all stationary equipment that they use, such as the range, the ovens, grills mixers and etc. We have no deep fryer anymore. Not good for you, ewe know.

Now, where did I park my train?

Used to have a Maytag dishwasher, traded it in for a pair of Chesapeake portable dishwashers. I use Hooper for pre-wash, and Shelby for pot scrub, they do an excellent job.

I have always washed under running hot water with a stainless steel scrubbing pad, and a sponge loaded with dish soap.

In the service we had three galvanized garbage cans filled with water, and each had a submersable oil fired heater that kept the water boiling. The first had a brew of soap and bleach, a long handled brush to scrub with, and the remaining two just had boiling clear water to rinse with. Woe be unto thee if your mess kit was not clean. A four hour stint guarding the latrine would insure a clean mess kit after the next meal.

Beer and pretzels please Brunhilda,

Washing dishes - ARGHH. My wife has a dishwasher and its really very good at what it does - but she insists on washing everything before she puts them in there.

My job, thankfully, is getting the stuff out of the dishwasher and putting them in the proper place. Even that is risky - make sure its all in its "proper place".

I said in an earlier post that she bought me a "kitchen-aid" mixer. But what does she use to mix anything - a hand mixer. Go figure.

Looking forward to the "Disney Trip".

Chris.

Sit back and enjoy your track...

I'd like to help you guys with the correct way to do the dishes, but I've been told I'm doing it wrong by SWMBO.  A few weeks back, she issued an edict that she would do "her" dishes and I would do "my" dishes.  I think she was unhappy because too many unwashed dishes were filling the sink.  I agreed immediately.  I honestly don't think she realized that she generates way more dishes than I do, and most of the unwashed dishes are hers.

I went out to hear some music tonight.  I enjoyed myself, but I had to stand for an hour and a half (with a beer in my hand, at least) because the place was packed.

Evenin folks!

Janie, just a refill of my decaf please....

Hand washing dishes???  There are several good accepted ways I have been taught over the past 40 years with the Scouts...  One way is to scrape and pre-rinse the dishes, then wash with a dishcloth or scrubber in hot soapy water, then either they are dunked in a large pot of boiling water (netting is used for that) or dunked in hot water containing bleach.  The dishes are hung up to air dry in the netting...  Very sanitary!  For home I use basically the same method except I pre-rinse the dishes after scraping, then into the hot soapy water to be scubbed with a scrubber, then they are rinsed under hot running water and set into the tray to airdry.  One thing you don't want to do is dry them with a dirty towel..... Whistling  Oh, and never "places in risnes warter", whatever that is?  (Sorry, I just couldn't help myself...)

Dug out as much of the ice blocking the walk from where I will park tomorrow to the porch at my sister's house today when  I was there.  Both kitties were glad to see me.  I have really fallen in love with her new kittie.  He is such a nice cat!  they are both sweeties that I would take home with me in a minute!

Tomorrow morning I have to finish cleaning up the dining room/office area, then head to Rochester airport to chauffeur my sister back to her house.  Try to get away from her house ASAP and then bet back to get things ready for about 7 or 8 people to show up here for a meeting for the Scout Pack and Troop Committee...

May or may not get online before I have to leave for Rochester.

Have a great night!  Prayers for all in need...

Evening Diners,

Popped in to say hi. It's been extremely hot today with some clouds at 83 degrees. I'm going to try to get a haircut sometime tomorrow thru Tuesday.

Ken- I wash dishes by hand, (dishwasher broke 5 years ago). My dad washes them wrong because there's still food particles on them.

 Afternoon Dinners

 Flo, Beer

Right now I am PO'ed by my LHS! I was taking a breather from working in the backyard. Called my LHS and asked if they had a DH165LO decoder. I was told "Yes, we have one left"! Droped what I was doing and jumped in the car and headed right over! Got there and told Tom I was there for a  DH165LO I called about. Told me this is the replacment for the DH165LO, and handed me a DH165AO? Not the same decoder, SoapBox I did not ask for what replaced the DH165LO!Bang Head

How do you folks wash your dishes by hand? Wife got me PO'ed when I got home! Seems I am doing the dishes wrong and I am going to get us all sick!

I knock off the big stuff left on the plate, sock in hot water for say 3 mintues to a hour. (depending on what I have to do at the time) Wash them, places in risnes water for a few minutes, then into the drying rack. Next I dry them with a towel and put them away.

Sue says I need to scrub them clean with a brush, under running water, then wash them? Whistling Now I am not leaving hucks of food on the plates, just some sauce.

 Later Ken

JAMES MOON

Garry, I am going through Nashville on my way to I-40.  I think you are farther west near the lakes.  Is that correct?

Jim

Jim.  That is correct.  An alternative route would be to get off I65 at Elizabethtown and take KY parkways to the lakes area where we are and then head southwest toward Memphis. It would be easier for you to look at maps than for me to explain .  We are where US 68 crosses through Land Between the Lakes. ..
