Good afternoon All!

Stopped in for a few moments!

Galaxy...Good luck, on Your new life...hopefully!

Garry...Congrats on Your Livestock trailer build.....Does it roll??? He' He'.

Grain trucks... Magnuson used to make a resin cast kit, I believe Walthers took them over, but I don't see any offering of it in the catalog. You can use one of those GC lazor kit body's and build Your grain body, just remember to put the bracing outside of body and smooth inside, like plywood on a homemade farmers grain truck. Rear gate would look the same as the sides, but with a opening like a small gate that can be opened like in a dump truck. I have seen some home builds that started out as a dump, converted to a grain truck. You have to give it some thought, as to how to get the grain out once at the mill...rather than shoveling it out...time consuming. For how one would look or if You want to take the plunge and purchase a Sheepscot feed truck body, they look exactly like a grain truck....if not, You can at least see what one looks like:

Click on ''canvas covered feed truck''.

http://www.sheepscotscale.com/site/gallery/galleries/bodies?page=2

Grain Trailers...Should You want them...again You will run into the same thing as far as era is concerned and may have to scracth Your own or purchase a Wilson grain trailer kit from Lonestar. They will be around 60's era and above. They are fine kits...true 1/87 scale, finer detail than Sylvan, but cost more and are ABS Plastic, not resin. I have built three of their grain trailers and two flat bed kits, quite some time ago, when they were cheaper:

https://www.lonestarmodelsinc.com/

I've enclosed a pic' of one of the flat beds that I built with a Truss girder load on it, made with Plastruct girders, A-Line 40 links per inch chain, that actually holds the load on...I also learned some new inaudible words, on that build.

Have Fun!

Take Care, All! Big Smile

Hey Frank, what do use for the windows on the building behind your tractor trailer?

Nice work on everything in the scene, BTW. Dan

Hi guys

in early today, didn't sleep well so figure it's just as easy to get up and have a cup of coffee before work. If you will permit me to get some things off my chest.

at the moment im kind of down in the dumps. The manager I really like at work is leaving, his last day was yesterday and am going to miss him. I just feel like I'm stuck in a rut there, almost like the tires are spinning but I'm not getting anywhere. Maybe something new in the new year. Also my wife is off right now, she hasn't used a sick day in almost 10 years and was just be overwhelmed at work, working 7 days for the last few months. She went to her doctor to get stress leave and got it so that's good. Problem is her company even though she is full time doesn't cover short term sick leave so she has to go though un employment for it. And that may take a few weeks to get started. Money will be tight for a bit but she really needed a break, I went from seeing a person who really enjoyed her job to a person who hated it with a passion all within a year too.

well best get moving, kind of,lol I don't go into work until 7 but want to browse around. I work tomorrow also until 3:30 also and want to strat. A small modelling project for my rod hockey game. I'm going to cut out the plastic net and replace it with real mesh. I have a old mosquito net that is almost perfect size scale for it. So want to spend some time at the bench working on that on Sunday.

Glad I was able to get that off my chest, you guys are my friends here so know I can get some kind comments back

im still excited f Christmas and my birthday next Wednesday, lol but I kind of wish it would be over and done with at the moment. And just back to a normal time. I just find that Christmas starts earlier and earlier each year and by the time it gets here I'm sick of it,lol

another thing, sorry to rant fellas is that everyone at work is sick. The smart people call in, one lady left yesterday with a horrible cough. meanwhiwle the two that came to work sick in the first place and spread it around are mad and complaining when others stay home. drives me crazy, if your sick don't go to work nobody else wants a hacking cough or stomach flu that could have been avoided had they just not come in. i think we all work with somebody like that, I get that you came in and are trying but think of others that may get that later on.

thanks again for listening guys

i will try to drop back in this afternoon after work if I can, funny thing I was actually feeling off yesterday myself. It went away though which is good. Also my anxiety and panic attacks have been kind of creeping back in so have to try to just let some stuff slide and not bother me. If start worrying over little things it will lead to one. like a guy at work says don't worry about things here, just do what you can do. That's all you can do right?

Evening Diners,

My dad came back home today. He was supposed to be home yesterday but he missed his flight. He thought the 2th was on a Thursday not on a Wednesday.

Since he's here I would have problems logging in because he's a complete internet user.

I weighted myself four days ago at being 200 pounds. I will lose 20 within a month or so. Depending on the walks and the dog.

Train News: I returned my Grand Trunk Western boxcar for the correct number that came in yesterday. Nothing on the layout process it's been slow these past few weeks.

Talk to you guys in a few days when I get the chance.

Garry, I'll be trying a Woodland Scenes product called "Smooth It"

I watched a few videos where it is being used and I think it is worth a try.

If any one else has some hints or tips in this area, I am all ears before I get started. Blindfold

Frank, you sure have a great truck collection there and I know they have all been specially built or heavily upgraded. Supurb work there. and thanks for the tips that you give each of us from time to time.

When I first trucked with my Fathers outfit, which were all gas burners, I mainly drove a 9000 White, with a 185 horse Reo motor in it, single axle and pulled everything from a 28' cement deck, to 48' flat deck for culverts, machinery and hay bales. At one time we had a contract with Brantford Coach in Winnipeg to bring in new trailers that had been sold or to go on their sales lot.  The one that sticks in my mind was the first volume van that Westons Bakery bought.  They had a very old fleet and a pretty dumb fleet manager. He ordered a 45' trailer, 13 ft high, on a single axle with old style vacuum brakes. We still had an old Dodge tractor that had both air and vacuum on it so we got the call. Weston's had only had it for a couple of weeks and we get another call to take it back to the factory to have a tandem bogie put under it with a chaange up to an air system and, oh yeah, the measurement they had given was meant to be an inside measurement and the factory had made it 13' overall height. Therefore they couldn't get the last box of bread in against the roof. You definately need someone who knows what they are doing when ordering new equipment. That cost them alot of money with the upgrades and two round trips to Winnipeg for me.

Weston's was the forerunner of Wonder Bread up here.

JAMES MOON
Any suggestions on how to pin stripe a HO scale grain body?

Jim,

If You are just looking for a nice fine line stripe along the side of the body and even cab...look into Automotive pin-stripe tape. It comes in many colors and I have found that the 1/16th size is perfect for a nice fine line without having or trying to paint it.

In the pic', the Transcon truck in between the two Autos was done with Black pin-stripe tape. The pic' of the loaded flat bed trailer/tractor, the straps on the fuel tank was done with 1/16th pin-stripe tape. I have even made them even smaller to 1/32nd by trimming them down with a Machinist steel rule and #11 exacto....patience being the key, on a sheet of glass...wears blade tip out fast though, on glass.

Hi DSSP,

Welcome to the Diner.  Welcome     Lots of us Ol' Pharts hang out here. But in keeping your ears open you can sure learn a lot of stuff.

My congratulations and praise on the interior of that roundhouse. That is beautiful detailing work. I am impressed and envious at the same time.

I am at work right now so can't take much time.  The LM&E is going through some concrete work, as over the next while I will try to bury three rail lines in concrete (Smooth it) under my elevated Union Station.  This tooo shall be an experience.

DSPP Fan,

Fantastic job on the roundhouse detail....You're a Man after My own heart. I just love putting in detail on structures/vehicles, no matter how long it may take...time in that respect to Me is irrelevant....the outcome is worth more to Me, just seeing how close I can come to My vision, of a finished project. Along the way, of many trials and errors, I usually find better ways to accomplish My vision. Just as in climbing a Mountain.....the climb...is more important than getting to the top. Looking forward to seeing more of Your work!

Garry, I forgot about Sylvan...they do have about 8 grain trucks like You were looking to do...single axles though...but good enough. Peruse the link I gave You about them.

Garry....One more ting'...You say You wanted to have a tarp on the grain truck....A little tip for the tarp...coffee can aluminum peel off seals...the ones that You find on coffee cans plastic/tin, that have to be peeled off. They will hold their shape, once formed and can be painted. Can be cut with a pair of scissors.

Back to My project.....

Take Care, All! Big Smile

Afternoon folks!

Janie, I'll have a Turkey Club Sandwitch, hold the tomatos for lunch.  Acup of decaf would be good as well...

I spent most of the morning clearing up a problem of why I had not gotten any emails for the past 2 days!  TWC was very helpful with the "chat" screen with help in resolving the issue.  someone got into my account at TWC and sent all my emails to a @gmail.com account...  They are looking into what happened.  Hmmmmmmm.....?  I do know where to check in my account if I stop getting the many, many emails I get everyday again.  What ticks me off is that I was expecting a whole bunch of emails relating to things I am currently working on for some of the organizations I volunteer for.

DSSP Fan, welcome to the diner!

Catch you all later, I hope.

Garry, Sylvan has at least five different makes of grain trucks.  I have one on the bench to paint and assemble.  I have never done a resin kit.  A first for everything, I guess.

Welcome D, glad you joined in the conversation.

Howdy, everybody !

DSPP Fan
Good morning MR fans! Mind if I join you? Thought I would stop by the diner and join the conversations. For those of you who glanced at my "back in the saddle" General Forum thread, you already know that I am returning to the hobby after a 5 year hiatus, and am working hard to complete my new layout, that is based on the South Park Division of the Colorado & Southern narrow gauge. For the last few weeks I have been working diligently to complete Como Roundhouse, with complete interior and supporting overhead belt drive (OBD). This stone roundhouse and OBD work is, without a doubt, the most challenging modeling I have ever done. It literally took me 5, 12 hr. days to complete the machine shop and OBD. I'll post pics of the completed structure. I really look forward to meeting all of you diner patrons. =D

DSSP Fan .... Welcome ..... Gppd to see you here. ... I like Colorado narrow gauge, but don't model it. Too mny choices, and not enough resourse and time. .... I model mostly CB&Q in about 1960 ..... Your Como Roundhouse must be impressive. I'd like seeing photos if you can do so.

Frank .... Thanks for commentimng on my live stock trailier and providing thoughts and information about possible grain trucks. .... I think Slylvan has a grain truck too, but I'm not sure.

Happy Model Railroading !

Well, I got nailed again.  I must be related to Ray! Whistling   I checked my MC account before bed to make sure a payment was received, and saw a charge I didn't know about.  Turns out, some jackhole is running around Amman, Jordan, with my credit card number.  Luckily, only 1 of 5 charges went through, and that one is being removed, too, but this is insane!  This is like the 4th time I've had this happen in the last 12-18 months.  This time, it was on an almighty chip-equipped card that I don't use a lot.  Just very frustrating.

Now, to try to wind back down so I can sleep.  Later.

The benchwork is in the house and the road bed is down. The layout is flat and mostly straight as it is based on the intermountain/desert southwest. The new section will be a town and farm land. Here are a few pictures--

The new section

The corner. A mess with all of the buildings and vehicles with no place to go.

Good evening, diners.   Had another cloudy day in the SE Ohio River Valley but drier than the last couple of days.  Raked leaves this afternoon as it looks like the city will be around with their leaf vac rig tomorrow as they have the sign up on our street this afternoon.  The city here provides two leaf pickups each fall.  The leaves go to the local compost farm and are recycled as mulch for the city.  Keeps the leaves out of the landfill as open burning is banned in town.

Order a batch of ties and a bunch of switch ties this afternoon as I am at a standstill laying tracks without more switch ties.  Had order ties/switch ties from Walthers in October but they have been back ordered with no indication of when they will ship.  So, I ordered direct from manufacturer.  Hope they can give better service.

Frank, your trucks are really impressive.  I have a Sylvan resin cast grain truck awaiting painting and assembly.  Any suggestions on how to pin stripe a HO scale grain body?

Howmus, your mention of NY state maple syrup brings back fond memories of a departed friend who used to bring back syrup for us when we lived in Iowa.  He retired and moved back to the Syracuse area.

I had a very easy computer add on experience today.  Bought and installed a 5tb external storage unit that was truly plug and play.  Backed up my entire photo library in about 15 minutes.  It contained over 10 years of photos.  Now I can delete about half of the photo library and hopefully speed up my laptop.

Galaxy, take it easy with your moving activities.

Good morning!  Nah.  I'm tired from hockey last night, still fighting this cold and it's cold and rainy out.  Bah.

Heartland Division CB&Q
Mr. B ... I also have the figure of the elderly man with a cane on my layout.

I call him "Mr. Caesar."  He owns the Empire Leather Tanning Company, a set of buildings Walthers makes.  An old tannery takes in hides, acid and salt and needs fuel too, and it ships out finished leather, so it provides opportunities for a number of different freight cars.

cudaken
Surprised I feel as good as I do tonight. At work I got dizzy and saw stars for a few seconds. Not sure if I had a high or low blood sugar attack?

That sounds like low blood sugar.  I'm taking Old Man Pills for type-2 diabetes, and one of the warnings is that I might experience this.  So, if I'm doing any sort of exercise and I haven't eaten for a while, I carry along either a small candy bar or one of those "health bars" in my pocket.  The health bars are probably better for you, and they don't get all gooey and melty in the heat.

Want a good story?  I was hanging out after hockey last night, and the Zamboni driver (I've always got a beer for him) was telling us that last week there was a group of guys like us who had just come off the ice.  One of them keeled over in the locker room.  Somebody checked him - no pulse.  So, this whole bunch of hockey players, not a medical person among them, sprang into action.  Someone called 911.  Someone opened the emergency doors closest to the locker room and waited outside for the ambulance.  Someone ran to get the defibrillator.  They hooked it up and it did its job, and their friend was saved.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast Coffee and a couple sour cream glazed donuts to start the day.

Dark and gloomy here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS this morning and supposed to stay that way for the whole day.  Predicting 100% chance of rain and that will be moving in soon....  Guess I will stay inside and clean the house and work on the Girder Brdige project most of the day.  I do have to head over to Waterloo tonight to help with the annual Scout rechartering session.  I am not yet assigned anything in particular, but I probably will be put to work as soon as I show up....  That is what happened last year.  All three of my units are early in the process.  There is one that I doubt will be able to recharter, but we shall see.

Galaxy, welcome to the joys of house ownership....... Whistling

I'll go sit at the Rivet Counter and chat with Garry for a bit.

Good morning .

We finally have some sun after a lot of rain in recent days.

Steven ... Your efforts are appreciated.

Frank ... (If you are looking in,) .. I went ahead and built the 1950 Fruehauf livestock trailer, and I am pleased with the results. I have not yet ordered the tractor, but will soon. Also, I want to select an approppriate grain hauling truck. I was thinking of a stake truck with a tarp over it.

Other model railroad... Actually not much... I have been running trains. My to do list is growing.

Hi Steven!

WELCOME Welcome to the diner thread....officially!

Can you tell us, beside political posts, what the themes of the 93 were about? so we all know what to watchout for?

Thanks,

and

Welcome

again

PS I hope I am not the subject of the 93?

When you subscribe to a thread, every post made to that thread is sent to you as an e-mail. So, basically, it was the last five days' worth of posts to the November Diner. Certainly not 93 complaints or abuse reports! Surprise Just keeping an eye on things so if the forbidden topic flared up again, I could nip it in the bud.

Morning guys

a off day today. Still really haven't had the urge to get back to the bench or the layout to work on the railroad. I sometimes go through periods where I step away from the trains for a bit. I have been playing a lot of table top sports games such as strat o matic baseball, football and hockey. Also playing rod table hockey. That can be a hobby in itself painting figures and such. That's the good thing with model trains, there always there to go back too when the urge strikes, for me though I have to clean up my gaming setup as its in front of the trains, lol
