It's a maintenance day.  I'm doing laundry, and straining the solids from the turkey broth I made from Thursday's dinner.  I picked up some Rix switchstands and some trees from my LHS yesterday.  I've built my whole layout from that shop over the last 10 years, but it's built up now and I don't need much anymore.  I resisted the temptation to buy more rolling stock that I really don't need.  I got a couple of packages of flat-panel LEDs, too, which should work nicely as porch lights and such for the small City Classics houses I'm bulding right now.

RAy: the sump worked fine. The b-foundation IS a cinderblock foundation, BUTY: They sealed it and parged over it, and painted it again with KILZs or DRYLOC it looks like.

The trains have been safely MOVED to the new house! They are IN their NEW HOME. They were first to go in the UHAUL todya. TOok over 3 loads. Trian nut friend had little trouble navigating the stairs tothe basement while carrying hte loads of boxes, plastic bins and assorted items. we probably moved only 10% of what we hacve to.

We MAY have to have a new garage door put in to widen it s I can parkthe minvan in it wthout taking in the mirrors. Now to ge MOH trianed to park it in the garage {its home} until gthe door is widened. THERE is enough room to widen it even by a foot as the one side is aobut 1' deep, the house side aobut 2.5' deep. There WILL be things to hang on the wall as soon as I get the hooks.

wnet to mount the new locking mailbox onthe wall, and found that I had no drill bits, only my massicve tool collection! So I havd to go get tehm, and nevr did finish the mailbox. Tomorrow's project. By that time, My hips and my back gave out asnd I could hardly mo ve!

Yesterday I wnet for a nap at 6 pm, and except for the facilities stops, slept all the way through until 7:30 this moring. My body is tired and worn out.

Monday moring the Stanley Steemer guys comet o do the house carpets. That will be a relief as thenn we can move some ofhte larger furniture in.

form tonight on, I will be sleeping in the new house!!!!!

well, that is all.

later

 Evening Dinner

 Flo, Beer please.

Work Front Meet the new guy Jerry. While he does not know a Hole In The Ground from a Ash Pit about Mattress he seemed OK I guess. He told me he was there to handle the over flow of customers? I told well some days it can be busy. Well today was a day I was busy! Where he really helped me was with the customers that where picking up, that help a lot!

When I was not with a customer I tried to bring him up to speed on mattress, futons and such. I was not bored that is for sure. Real question is what he will retain, I am sure I kind of over loaded him.

I was in the zone today! Had 10 customers and 7 bought, really cannot ask for a better %. Had $3100.00 in sales and sold one good spiff mattress so I made around $135.00 in spiffs.

I had wonder what he would think when he saw the 4 Sale Sign in front of the store? Marvn (owner) told him he was going to sell and open a new store! Yea and I am going to lose 100 pounds by Sunday and not have any body parts cut off! Whistling If he finds a buyer, he is going to buy a lake side condo!

Ray OK I get the scam now, just not the shipping it to you and not taking it with them?

Ulrich are you there? Hope I have not over loaded your brain on the layout plan. I wish you had as much room as I do.

Well it is time for more Turkey and Stuffing! Dinner

Ray OK I get the scam now, just not the shipping it to you and not taking it with them?

The order may have been done by phone and when the CC # was put in, it automatically came up with my Staples account, so it shipped to my address...  That was one of the reasons the Manager told me I would be very smart to get a new account there.  That way no one can try to use it to get my new CC info, if they got a copy of the email.  Funny thing is that the order also changed the location of my "Home" store to one in the Rochester area.

I spent most of the afternoon and evening putting rivet decals on the new girder bridge section.  Almost have one side of one girder done....  That would be about 1/6th. of the rivets on it....  By next weekend I may have the bridge ready to join together.  I figure it will be on the layout by mid January?

Have a great night everyone!

Good Morning!

Zoe, it´s a little late for breakfast, so I´ll just settle for coffee in my RhB mug, please!

It´s a sad day for me - I just discovered that my benchwork has warped for whatever reason. It has warped to an extent beyond repair, already causing damage to the track. That puts a stop, if not an end, to the construction of this layout. There are quite a few $$$ in it, which are now lost.

I am not happy about this!

SighSighSigh

Galaxy - ah, the joys of moving. I have been through that many times, in fact too many times. It´s incredible how much schtuff miraculously accumulates over the years. Our attic is filled to the brim with things we don´t use and don´t need, yet it is difficult to part from them. Time to pare down, I think!

Ken - I parked your Barracuda in your drawing:

Doesn´t leave much room for a layout! If you want to have access to all sides of the layout, you can´t go much bigger than 5 by, say, 15 ft.

Guess I will now indulge in my sadness!

How could your bench work warp? It is such a small bench. Now if my benchwork should warp, neither I or my trains would ever know about it.

Good morning.

Ken ... I like the photo looking down the track.... SOunds like work is much better without the certain individual there anymore. Hope the new guy works out.

Ulrich ... That is bad news about the warping.

Galaxy ... Glad you are progressing with the move.

Visiting family went home, and now the honey do's are for cleaning up the house.

Hope to get back to model railroading in the next few days.

Adding to the misery, my beloved Furka-Oberalp boxcab electric quit the service - worn out plastic gears. The loco got more and more noisy and finally quit running at all, while the motors spun around freely. Now I need to find a place being able to repair it.

I am on the edge of chucking it all and give up the hobby for good. This is my third attempt ending in a disaster.

Good morning!  Looks like a fine, sunny day outside, but it's barely above freezing and there is still frost on the lawn in the shadow of the house where the sun hasn't had a chance to warm it up.  Looking ahead at the forecast, I may not be doing any more bike riding for a while.  It's just getting too cold.

So, it's time for some modeling while sitting on the couch watching football.  What's that?  Oh, yeah.  I have to go to the gym.  This cough has had me off my exercise for a while, and I've grown lazy.  Well, at least I can watch the eye candy on the treadmills.

Good Morning,

It is a sunny day here and we are supposed to get up to about 25F which is mild for this time of year.

A lot of excitement today in Winterpeg as the Grey Cup is being hosted here. For those not familiar it is the final for the CFL. Ottawa and Edmonton are playing in the new stadium that is only about a mile from our house, on the grounds of the university. Hopefully it won't be too noisy. At least they rigorously enforce the no parking on the residential streets near it, including ours.

Ulrich, sorry to hear about the benchwork. What kind of wood is it? Strange that it should warp if it is a laminated product.

Not much on the agenda today. My wife still isn't feeling well but at least she has a doc appointment tomorrow and is getting an endoscopy on Thursday, so hopefully we can find out why her symptoms aren't clearing up. It has been on and off for a month now.

I've started painting the parts for the N scale factory but not much else new on the RR front.

Nice to see Galaxy is now in the new home. Moving is a major pain but exciting nonetheless. We have only done it once and that was 25 years ago. I expect we will sell the house at some point and move to a condo, but that is a few years away especially as Robbie is only 6.

Hope everyone has a nice day.

Good afternoon, all.  My wife, daughter and granddaughter left about 7:45 for Tuscaloosa as granddaughter's classes start back Monday.  She said next week is dead week and then finals are the following week and the she is back home for Christmas and semester break.  The wife went along so my daughter would not have to drive back by herself.

We sang our first Advent anthem this morning.  A sure indication Christmas is coming soon.

CN Charlie, hope the Grey Cup activities are not too disruptive in your neighborhood.  What have they done with the old stadium in the Peg?

Galaxy, don't envy anyone facing the installation of crown molding.  I found one type of crown molding that had a built in reveal along the bottom which made it a little easier to fit and certainly aided in painting both the crown and the wall.

Noticed that the diner is about ready to move again.  Hope everyone has a good weekend.  I know I had my fill of sports broadcasts Friday and Saturday.

Time to head for the basement and do a little clean up of junk on the floor under the layout and then cut some curve templates to further layout the track work.

Afternoon folks,

Chloe, just a cup of decaf please...

Went to church this morning and got to sit with my granddaughters.  Oh, the parents were there as well. Laugh  Granddaugyter #1 got to put the first Chrismon (part of the children's story time between now and Christmas) on the tree in the sanctuary. She was grinning from ear to ear to be chosen.  Will be heading over to their house later this afternoon as they will be celebrating some old guy's (late) birthday today.  In the meantime I have been putting Rivets in place on the girder bridge.

Currently at the high for today.  37°F under dark gray cloudy skies today here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS.  Yesterday was also very dark and gloomy. only made 1.5 kWh from the panels yesterday and it will about the same today.  Tomorrow is forcast to be sunny so things should pick up in that department.  I have already past the old record for electricity from the roof for November anyway.  I will end the year a couple hundred kWh off the mark due to last winter.

Ulrich, bummer about the new wood warping.  That just shouldn't happen!  I remember someone made that for you didn't they?  I'd get back in touch and see what can be done about it.  WOW!

CN Charlie will keep your wife (and you) in my prayers that all will be OK.  Hope it is something treatable!

OK, back to riveting the bridge.  Catch you all later!

Ray - it wasn´t made for me, I just had a friend lending me a little bit more than a helping hand. Whatever the reason is, I am the one to take the blame.

Looks as if I have gone beyond my limitations. My 3rd attempt which is bound to fail - that sucks!

Should I go back building those mini-modules? They turned out quite well! Still got stuff of that in my attic ... track, switches, corner modules ...

Afternoon Diners,

Yesterday I saw some neighbors hanging up their Christmas lights. So I decided to finish my walk and start my decorating. I finished hanging the extension cord and one stang of lights, (I was tired, and was going finish the rest today) and put the timer on. Unfortunately they didn't turn on. I checked the fuse box nothing, I checked the timer it didn't move the time that I placed it. I took off the timer to the lights and extension cord and put them together and nothing. I forgot to check the lights because I know they work I been hanging them up for the past three years and I bought them. So no house decorating this year.

Whistling

Hi Ulrich,

Just to let you are you aren't alone and a number of us have passed this way that you are at right now.

Several years ago the south side of my house settled 1 and 5/8 inches and I had to have it mud jacked  (compression grouting).  Well the good news is that they got the house right on level. The bad news is, they lost control of it and the compression blew up the basement floor on that side of the house. In the areas that they could get at the floor was jack hammered out and a new one poured. But, I decided with all the work and time I had invested in the LM&E, I was not going to take it apart to have that floor done and thankfully, although it should have been, it wasn't damaged to the extent that the extra bedroom was and a storage room, which is now my staging area.

So this left me with a mess in the railroad room. (13 x 17 ft.)I did have adjustable bolts on the bottom of the table legs, so I could work with them a little but it still left alot that had humps and bumps and I just patiently worked on it by wedging and shimming and have got it back into a useable state that you would not recognize the problem areas.   It can be done, just use your creative genius to figure out the best way to carry on. Just as the Pioneers did. They encountered more problems that what we could dream of, but they did not quit, and I don't expect you to either. Don't let this stop you from keeping your eye on your goal,  you will be successful. Just keep doing what you are doing. Quitters never finish, and I know that is not in your make up..

well, nothing much got accomplished today.

FIrst, MOH's car wouldnt start.  It wnats to start then it sounds like the starter motor engages again,. I took MOH to work today, but can't tomorrow as MOH requires a vehcile t o drive the special needs individuals around,a nd I cnanot go as I am NOT  a staff member and not FBI cleared. SO MOH has to take tomorrwow off. I cannot let MOH ahve my van as I need it, I have MANY appts this week, and need it.

The steam rug cleaners will be here in the early A of M tomoorw. TUesday moring I get my spinal nerve injections, wed is PT for my neck/shoulder, etc etc in the afternoons somtime this week  the lock smith is supposed to come and change all 6 locks.THAT will be good. I found hte minvan WILL fit int he garage with sut 2" {rihgt just two inches} of clearancce on teh mirrors on each side!!! talk about clsoe! so I will callthe overhead door company tomoorow to see how much to widen it at least a foot,c ould do aobut 1.5 foot, MAYBE 2. AT elast one foot will be better than jsut 4"!!!!

Oh, back to MOHs car: Hyundai has a roadside assistance for those With under warranty, so we called at 12:30 pm EST. with several calls and a mistake ont eh rod name on thier part, it took to 5:15pm to get a simple tow here!!!! I WON'T give you the aggrivation and angry words we had for them!!!!!! It is towed to the dealer.GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

well, that meant NOTHING got done today, only to move the crap we had inteh theree rooms moved to the kitchen {laminate flooring} so the STANLEY STEEMER cna steam clean the carpets tomorrow.

Well, Id besgt sleep well tonight, i "slept in" after taking MOH to work for anohter 4.5 hours, so I was "lazy" today.

best to all in pain, in mourning, in finacnial straights, dire positions and to those hwo go to bed hungry or with no place to call home tonihgt, it is freezing here.

 Evening Dinners

 Flo, Beer please

Work Front Normally after a busy Saturday, Sundays are slow. Not Today! I was stuned, we had 10 customers, but nothing worth a darn. Had to stay late and do the store order, did not get out till a hour after closing. So far I am not impressed with Jerry, but maybe he just needs a little time.

Ulrich I am all so soory to here about the Bench warping! I am guessing it is just the top, am I right? Post some photos, we might come up with a way to flanten it back out.

Sir Madog
But why do you want to have a helix?

I am sick of a flat layout, I want some height this time a round. For a 2% grade I need like 16 foot to go up 2 inches, is that math right? I would like part of the layout 6 to 10 inchs higher. Tell me what you think!

Sir Madog
this leaves you with about 9 ft for the layout, which unfortunately is too narrow for what I had in mind.

I agree it is going to be a little tight. I printed out the photo you made and some with out the Road Runner (not Barracuda). I will do some rough drawings to get the your brain moving. I would like 26" turns, but all my big steam will take 18 inches. No smaller than 22", I still like a EM1.

Far as wide, depending on what you come up with I am pretty sure I will need some pop up lift off sections. I am in no hurry, got to see how life goes anyways.

Galaxy Sorry to hear about the car problems, I am having my share as well. I know you are a pretty privrate person, but would you mind posting some photos of the new house? We like to watch. Big Smile

 See you all later, Ken

Ken: a two percent grade requires 100" to go up 2".  To go up 10" would require a 500" inch run, or 41' 8", plus top and bottom easements.

Hope this helps.

V8Vega

Galaxy how much is Stanley Steamer charging you and how many rooms and is the carpet real dirty or just mildly dirty. I'm curious, thanks.

$200 for 3 rooms and a hall and two carpeted closets. That includes a spray of stain repellant as well. The carpet has "traffic pattern" stains and at least one black spil and one red spill of juices/coffees. It is an almost white with brown flecks Berber carpet which should wear like iron and last for eyears, but we don't want "other people's dirt" on the carpets. ANd a home steam cleaner won't do as good a job as they will. Also the protectant should help avoid further staining.

GM MEN!

Today the Stanley Steemer people are due to come and hopefully we will have an answer on the car.

The car IS Covered under warranty so it hopefully wont cost us a cent. It only has 30K miles on it,and should, with the extra warranty cover anything invovled.

It is COLD hee at 17F. But it IS december and we have had mild 50s into 60s lately, so I guess we can't complain.

I've got to: see steemer, get the mailbox up, call the phone company to start service, call the town to see how much longer they will vacuum leaves up and possibly rake leaves to the curb; unpack some stuff, set up the bed again for me to sleep there again.Pack more stuff.

Once the carpets are cleaned we can {I can} take over smaller stuff that will sit on the carpets. I;td be nice to get a comfy something to sit on over there sooner than later to sit on instead of the hard {padded}cardtable chairs. They get uncomfy after a while. I can begin the closet transformations too.I adouble rodded the coat closet here as it is small, so we each have a rod on which to hang coats. So I will transform the BR, the Coat, the second BR closets with the same double rods to increase hanging space. I use the ClosetMaid stuff nad have it cut to size.

MOH will paint again i think, I have too much other stuff to do.I think I am the better painter, MOH goes to fast, but painting is painting and i may not have time to do so today.SInce MH has no car and isn't working, Can paint.

I will let he carpet dry a day or so, so I might not get much done over there, wihtout wlaking on it, They say you can but I want it to dry thoroughly and the protectant to seep in.

well, more purging nad packing awaits me,so best get my day started {evn though it is only 5:11 am here}

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!

Good Morning!

Actually, it´s already lunchtime here. It´ll be meatlof, mashed potatoes and veggies today.

Over many years, the German language has seen a quite strong influx of foreign words, mainly from English spoken countries and only very little from other languages, aside of food related expressions. Things have gone a wee bit over board and one might even say that the German language is on the retreat. The best way to show this is by posting the following little Christmas poem:

When the last Kalendersheets
flattern through the winterstreets
and Dezemberwind is blowing
then ist everybody knowing
that it is not allzuweit
she does come the Weihnachtszeit

All the Menschen, Leute, people
flippen out of ihr warm Stüble
run to Kaufhof, Aldi, Mess
make Konsum and business,
kaufen this und jene things
and the churchturmglocke rings.

Manche holen sich a Tännchen
when this brennt they cry "Attention".
Rufen for the Feuerwehr
"Please come quick to löschen her!"
Goes the Tännchen off in Rauch
they are standing on the Schlauch.

In the kitchen of the house
mother makes the Christmasschmaus.
She is working, schufts and bakes
the hit is now her Joghurtkeks
and the Opa says als Tester
"We are killed bis to Silvester".
Then he fills the last Glas wine-
yes this is the christmastime!

Day by day does so vergang
and the holy night does come
you can think, you can remember
this is immer in Dezember.

Then the childrenlein are coming
candle-Wachs is abwärts running.
Bing of Crosby Christmas sings
while the Towerglocke rings
and the angels look so fine
well this is the Weihnachtstime.

Baby-eyes are kugelrund
the family feels kerngesund
when unterm Weihnachtsbaum they're hocking
then nothing can them ever shocking.
They are happy, are so fine
this happens in the christmastime.

The animals all in the house
the Hund, the Katz, the bird, the Maus,
are turning round the Weihnachtsstress,

ENDE OF THE WEIHNACHTSTIME

I bet you folks don´t have a problem to understand it:

Galaxy - I always thought a Stanley Steamer is this:

I just wonder whether it´d be better to have the carpets steam-cleaned after the painting is done Whistling

I´ll be taking a break from MRRing to sort my thoughts about the layout. Having to deal with the warped benchwork (it´s actually not warped, but twisted) is only the tip of the iceberg - there are a few other issues, mainly caused by my own stupidity.

Time will tell!

Good Morning Diners,

Flo, I'll have an extra large coffee mit viel cream, bitte.

Ulrich: a few words not in my vocabulary, but I for one, understood the bulk of it. Cute!  I imagine everyone else did too.

After the snow a week ago, the weather has leveled off to be more seasonal.  The snow has all melted, the ground is still too warm for it to hang around like it will in Jan-Feb.

Gotta get ready for work.

I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Less is more,...more or less!

Good morning ! ........ Is anyone having breakfast here? ...... I'll have coffe and a donut. ... Save the sticky buns for Lion.

Ulrich ... That is very clever. .... As for Stanley Steemer, the company changed the spelling of Steemer... They are located all over the USA;

Galaxy .... $200 is a reasonable price. The company has done well for us when we used their services.

Angleob6660 ... More good words of wisdom.

Morning folks. I'll have a Coke, please.

It is 15 degrees and partly sunny here in the Yellowstone River Valley. Supposed to get up to the mid 20's today.

We had to take Ivy for her 4 month doctor appointment today. She was not happy at all about it. She cried when they did the mobility tests on her arms and legs and then she really bawled when she got her second round of vaccines. I stopped and paid the house and storage rent before dropping the wife off at work. We are now home and Ivy has been sound asleep since we left the doctors office.

We have an indoor ice rink here in town during the winter months at the fairgrounds. Some of the older guys (and gals) have a game or two a week for people who are older or who are just learning hockey. I played 20 years ago. They talked me into coming out and playing. I still have all my old gear, so I went. On the first night, the holder for my skate blade broke off my skates. So until I can get them repaired or order a new pair of skates, I am using rentals from the rink. This morning I hurt all over. My own skates were form fitted. Rentals are not. I think I have some muscles in my feet that I forgot I even had!

Well, I better get something done around the house before Ivy wakes up. Have a good day Y'all.

 Afternoon dinners

 Flo, Beer please

Been a rotten day off.Sigh Been over cast, showers on and off and foggy all day! I feel like I live next to Ulrich!

Had to take Sue to the Doctor to have a mold looked at. He is pretty sure it was not cancer but went ahead and removed it. That took 2 and a half hours in it self. I dropped her off at home and then went and got car plates abd then some food for Sue.

Ken: a two percent grade requires 100" to go up 2". To go up 10" would require a 500" inch run, or 41' 8", plus top and bottom easements.

Dave, I did the math right, just wrote down the wrong height. I orginally did the math for a 4" height and that should be around 16 foot. But, I missed typed and said 2". Thanks for pointing that out.

Well, think I will see what is on U Tube.

Hello all,

I worked five days in a row for work last week and got to sleep in today, oh yay. I have the next two days off until another round of much work.

After a very long absense, I decided to get back into the hobby, at least the collecting part until space for a permanent railroad comes around. Today, I purchased a BLI K4s, a Walthers B60b, Tichy water column, and several CMW vehicles. Going to go for some Spectrum coaches in the pre-war scheme. I'm looking forward to the BLI and Walthers models, but buying the Spectrum cars reminds me of when my grandfather bought me two for my 11th birthday. I no longer have the cars (they'd been used as fodder for practicing painting many, many years ago).
