Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner - November 2015
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 1, 2015 1:41 AM

In memory of

Jeffrey Scott Wimberly

July 07, 1960-December 15, 2014

AKA Running Bear, Dr. Frankendiesel, The Spray Can Rembrandt

Volunteer firefighter, exceptional model railroader

and dear friend to many of us.

Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner was formerly Elliot´s Trackside Diner, but was renamed to honor our dear friend Jeffrey "Running Bear" Wimberly.

Jeffrey´s Trackside Diner is a meeting place for all who wish to join. We may talk on-topic, but also off-topic here (as a matter of fact - the only place tolerated by our hosts), but always within the framework of the forum policy.Talk about your ongoing or future model railroading projects, show us your latest acquisitions or simply share your day.

If you need to let off some steam, you can do it here, but beware - Cousin Vinnie, the proprietor, is keeping a close watch on the language and is unforgiving when it comes to violations of the house rules, same as the general forum rules!

The staff is exceptional, and anything you desire to eat is available 24/7/365. This would includeJanie, the twins Chloe and Zoe, Flo, Daisy and the latest addition, Brunhilda ! The food is always excellent and tasty, just the way you like it!

So, pull yourself in, bank you fire, and sit a spell and enjoy!

Good Morning Folks!

Yes, I am back!

I needed a break from just about everything to set my mind at ease and try to sort out quite a few things to give Petra and me a new direction for our lives. While the former worked quite well, the latter ended as a futile attempt. Although the overall situation is not suited to settle into, I have to accept the fact that my hands are tied and there is nothing I could possibly do other than try to stick it out.

Que sera, sera
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que sera, sera
What will be, will be!

Yes, I have resigned.

I did not only brood over the bad times we are in, but also wo*ked in my layout a little. I installed the cork roadbed, laid the track and ballasted it. For ballasting, I used the proven but rather bad method of diluted white glue applied with a hypodermic needle fastened to a bottle , which resulted in a surge of the noise level. Took a lot of tweaking to cut down on it again, and also to solve some conductivity issues. Bemo track is made by Shinohara and I don´t think it is up to today´s standard. It´s a freebie, so I have to live with it.

Here is a short video showing the layout as it is today:

Galaxy - I am sorry to hear about the trouble you have with that house purchase. Somehow, there is a bad taste (or smell) to the whole deal, also considering the other circumstances you have mentioned. Maybe it´s better to step back and sort things anew?

Ken - I don´t want to appear patronizing, but if you really want to quit on the coffin nails, then just do it. I know you can do it - I did it 12 weeks ago! Yes, your eyes are not betraying you - I gave up smoking only 3 months ago! I was stupid enough to continue smoking even with all the health issue I have been going through. 3 months ago my doc told me if I don´s stop right now, I won´t live to see the new year. Guess what I did! I am feeling much better in just about any respect now! Petra still continues smoking, which is a tremendous problem for me. How to tell her that she stinks like hell to me now?

I´ll keep pulling for you, pal!

Good to see some new faces here - a big welcome!

Have a great November 1st - I will, it´s a  sunny day!

Good to see you back Ulrich, layout looks good, especially the joinery work. You might have Petra try the E-cigarettes if she is having a challange quitting. No smoke, just water vapor and nicotine. That is what I ended up doing, having used tobacco for over 65 years. Will get a PM to you the next day or so--have been following the going-ons in your part of the world, as a guess--1935!

Glad to see You got some things sorted out,ULRICH....You have to do that some times....stop...take a look around and continue to march. I at one time used to carry a lot of speculation and worry about tomorrow when I owned mine own business. It did Me absolutely no good and actually hindered Me, in My way of thinking and feeling. What did I DO???? I just stopped worrying about tomorrow and lived and worked for today. What I learned was... if I followed that belief, I was calmer, happier, made the people around Me the same and tomorrow, took care of itself. I do the same in todays world...there is so much going on in it, most all of it, out of My control, that I live for today and one day at a time....helps Me and others around Me.

I like Your video....brings back fond memories, of all of Europe. As You may recall, My second wife was born in Austria, She still owns property there. Given by Her parents, She is not a US citizen, so She can continue to own property there. Her cousins, take care of it. It is a farm.

Take Care...God Bless! Big Smile

Good morning....... Coffee and a donut please. Changing clocks twice a year is very dumb. It would be nice if daylight time was discontinued. I hope everyone survived Halloween. We have never had kids doing Trick or Treat since we moved here in 2001.

Ulrich!  .. Just having you in the Diner puts a smile on my face. Glad you have your model railroad. Our hobby is good for "sanity breaks" to escape our troubles. Nothing is so bad that it is not good for something. ... We Diners do care about you and Petra. .... I started watching the Swiss video. I'll watch more later. I was surprised to see horse racing in the snow. As I have said, I would like to ride the Swiss trains. Videos such as this one will have to suffice. ....

Frank ... Good to see you. I still want to assemble a Sylvan Models truck, and I am getting ideas. I should have my mind made up in a couple of weeks. Lots of non-model-railroad stuff happening now.

Herrinchoker. ... Nice to see you here.

Garry, I totally agree with you.  I wake up way too early as it is, but then when the time changes in the Fall, I wake up an hour earlier according to the clock on the wall. Supposedly, you get an extra hour of sleep when they turn the clocks back, but for me, I wake up at 3:30 AM because it really still is 4:30 AM according to my body clock.

I really would rather keep the clocks the same all year around, but would rather keep daylight savings time year around. The government seems to think they know best. Oh well.

It was rainy and cold Satururday here, will get in the 60s today, so time to finish winterizing the camper. Time for another cup of black coffee I think.

The wife and I are looking at the Cricut, as we both can get a lot of use out of it. But since we are looking at that we will probably get a new computer to go with it.  I wish it was as easy to make money as it is to spend it.

We changed the clocks back already last weekend and it took me the whole week to get my inner clock set right. I wouldn´t mind getting rid of DST at all, although for us folks living up north, there is a benefit - it is stays dark a little longer in the morning. Without DST, sunrise in my neck of the woods would be 2.30am, that´s a little early Smile

I spend the last hour running trains on my layout. It´s amazing how quickly gunk accumulates on the wheels! I have found a simple method of cleaning the wheels just by putting two lengths of 1" wide masking tape over the track with a 4" gap between them. The tape is the cheap stuff used by painters, not the expensive stuff modelbuilders use. It really works - those Bemo Swiss narrow gauge electrics are quite heavy and have a big flywheel in them.

Brunhilda - it´s not yet 5pm, but the sun´s aready setting here. How about a mug load of hot chocolate, beefed up a little with a generous swig out of that certain bottle Vinnie keeps beneath the counter? And  a handful of chocolate chippers to go with it, please!

Mornin' everyone!  Is that Ulrich in the back booth???  My gosh!  It is!

Zoe, I'll have the Breakfast Buffet for this Sunday...  I'll be in the back with the rest of the guys...  Oh, could you make me a fresh pot of Marrakesh Express Dark Raost please and bring me my FGLK Mug.

Ulrich, so good to have you back!  The place just isn't as nice without you.  Yes, the hobby is the escape from the ills of the world for many of us.

Daylight Savings???  They can get rid of it as far as I am concerned...  The expected savings of energy and help to let people enjoy a longer evening were grossly over estimated.  According to a US Energy Dept. Study it may save all of 0.03% energy use, and some other studies have shown it, in some places, actually increases energy use.  For those interested, it started during WW1  and was brought back in WW2 and then kept.  Personally I would rather have DST all year long, but either way I can handle it.... Laugh  In order to adjust my kitties insulin injections, I started moving the shot later by 10 minutes or so several days ago.  Today they got it at 9AM as usual...

I am skipping church this morning, as the family will not be there due to another commitment, and our Pastor is out of town.  The minister (Retired) who is preaching today refuses to use the mic correctly and I will not understand a word she says.  So....., I might better do some stuff around here.  I didn't get the carpet vacuumed yesterday and it really needs it so don't try to call me for a while.  I won't hear the phone ring!

Have a good one!

Gooooood Morning!!!

Coffee and the Sunday breakfast buffet please, thank you.

Wife has already asked where we are going to eat today so……everything is normal

Made it through Halloween with less trick or treaters than usual. Ok I suppose, still had the grandkids stop by for more treats, super beggers. We sent er, deliveredHuh?..... treats to them already because Brenda said they wouldn’t be here. My theory is if you can’t come over to get free candy……you don’t get free candy. Apparently, I’m alone in that thought. Friends of mine, well ours I suppose, brought her kiddos over for their “Special Bag” of goodies, They get the good stuff and popcorn balls same as our grandkids, and they get to come inside and say howdy doo to the dog.

WElp, best set the clocks back to get that extra hour we're promised. Can’t figure out how we get an extra hour, but if the government says we do, we do. Then kinda lazily do things between rest periods.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Oh you funny, funny people and your "daylight savings time." Here in Arizona we don't mess with it. (Neither do folks in Hawaii.)

Honestly, I am a big fan of standard time all year in Arizona. In the middle of the summer, the sun comes up just before 5:00am, but that is the coolest, relatively speaking, time of the day. It means we can get out and hike, bike, or run early in the morning and still have time to get ready for w*rk.

The biggest argument I have heard about not having daylight savings time run all year had to do with school children. Having daylight savings time in the winter months would have them at bus stops or walking to school in the dark of the night.

Good Morning,

It is a dull day here and it is supposed to stay that way for the next 3 or 4. Oh well at least it is above zero, as in 8C.

Ulrich, nice to see you back in the Diner!

Good to see so many faces in the place to welcome November. Yikes, November already. Think I better get the lawn furniture put away this afternoon and do a little yard work. Can't do much as it is very soggy out there.

No kids at our house last night. Maybe not having any lights on had something to do with it. We quit the candy thing a few years ago as we were only get 2 or 3 at the door so it just wasn't worthwhile. Besides the kids drive the dog nuts.

The whole daylight saving issue doesn't bother me much. I would rather have it all year so it would be lighter later in the winter. Time changes don't affect my sleep at all. I used to travel a lot when I was working and that meant a time zone or 2 change for every trip. I found that I just seemed to get used to it.

I just might run trains today!

Good afternoon, Diners!

I seem to have caught that odd ailment that many of us have.  I haven't done much with the trains all summer.  But, I'm getting the bug again, which is good.  I hadn't really taken a break from modeling for the last 10 years, so I guess I was due.

Ulrich (and others,) when the doctor told me I had Type 2 Diabetes, it felt like a death sentence.  But, after changing medications and telling me I needed daily exercise, I took it seriously.  I've been biking an hour or two every day, or playing hockey or sometimes just going for a walk.  I've lost weight, exchanged belly fat for leg muscle, and I generally feel better than I have in years.  I want to lose some more weight, so I'm trying to reduce my beer intake.  That has not been easy.

Being retired, Daylight Savings Time has no particular effect on me.  I sleep when I'm tired and wake when I'm ready.  It will take me weeks to find all the clocks that need resetting, though.  I usually leave the electronic thermostats on Standard Time because they don't get much use in the summer, anyway.

It's the first day of the month!

I would been here earlier but I was busy. Its nice to Ulrich and I enjoyed your layout.

I thought yesterday of breaking the N Scale Salt Lake Route layout in half and trying to fit on two doors. It almost worked I placed two industries to make the outskirts of the city before going fully desert scenery. I tried to keep my junction with an interchange (BNSF) but I don't know if it will fit. The interchange track will be an added staging yard and later in life an add-on section to the layout. After placing two outskirts businesses on each side it estimated my downtown scene. I thought of putting some served industry so the scene wouldn't look like an open space.

Its doable but my mind is getting tired of trackplanning and ready for the next step building it. UP will be the main railroad.

Wants and Needs

Amtrak station with downtown (city), rail junction with interchange track, 3 to 4 industries, probably an intermodal yard.

Thanks so much Ulrich, I really enjoyed that, it seemed almost like a small holiday itself.
Can you now tell me about what looks like a steering wheel in the cab.. Am I right thinking it has to do with the braking ?  and I never heard them blow a horn or a whistle, so whats with that ?

Good Morning!

Thank goodness I don´t have to drive to work today (or any day) - it´s so foggy you cannot see your own hand held right in front of your eyes! I wonder where all that moisture comes from - it has been quite dry the last week. OTOH, we never had such a beautiful November 1st like yesterday was in decades!

No plans for the day other then the usual beginning of the month banking issues, but that will have to wait until the fog clears. I don´t do banking via the Internet. I still the risk of having my account corrupted is too high and for the few things I have to actually do is going to the bank once or twice a month not a big thing.

Johnboy - the big wheel you saw in the cab of that railcar was not a brake wheel, but the rheostat controlling the speed. The brake is the handle close to the window on the right. In Switzerland, trains whistle only when approaching unprotected grade crossings and there are hardly any along that line.

Our friend Galaxy did not come into the diner yesterday - I hope things are OK with him!

Have a great day!

 Morning Dinners

Flo, big cup of Coffee please

Todd I had a feeling you understand the battle I am going through. I wish I could afford the Electroinc Cigarettes. Guess I should check on the cost again.

Ulrich Great to see you back at the dinner. Glad you stop smoking and hope it sticks. May as you to help with a new layout. The old one needs to come down so I can get the Road Runner in side.

Yard Wars With the extra morning daylight I was able to work on it some more yesterday for a hour and a half. Finaly can see the pool slide again.

YGW Will you be home at 4:00 PM? All I have is your home number.

Good Evening Diners,

Brunhilda, I'll have a cup of Earl Grey tea with cream and honey, please.

Ulrich:  It is so great to have you back.  I hope everything is OK for you.

YGW:  Got your e-mail.  Will print out and review.  Hopefully, I'll have an idea or two for you.  When did you want this project implemented?

This last weekend, MOH and I went to a wedding at a place a few miles west of Alton, IL.  The drive along the Mississippi River right along there is just gorgeous. This is just a bit up stream from where Lewis and Clark launched their expedition.

I hope everyone is OK, safe, and warm.

Evenin' folks!

I was gonna get in here for breakfast this morning, and kept finding things I needed to get done before I stopped by...

Janie, just a decaf for me right now.  Thanks...

Been a great day here in the Finger Lakes Region of NYS today.  High of 60°F with nice bright sunshine all day.  Tonight it will get down to 43°F they say.  I chopped down and bagged all the asperagus stalks, weeds, Russian Sage, and Oregano in the old raised bed right by the house today.  The Blacktop company guy called early this morning to tell me they couldn't do it tomorrow and rescheduled for next Monday....  I've been batting 1000 all summer with small jobs!  The plumber was supposed to be here over 3 months ago, and the painter promised me he would get to the porch concrete and ceiling before now.  I left an email for another company to get in touch with me about the plumbing.  It would be nice if I could get it done before the end of the week so the paver doesn't have to get water down cellar from my washing machine hook up.............Angry

I also got more rivets installed on the bridge...  I can only work at it for a half hour at at time before my nerves are completely shot....  I'm taking a break from it right now as a matter of fact.  Been working on the NMRA Fall Meet in Hammondsport a few weeks from now.  Waiting to here back from the editor to see if he can get a newsletter done this week...

Catch you all later!
