I made another van video. This one a low speed drive around the loop. Remember that this is a GASOLINE engine.

Van drive.

Good Morning!

I woke up at 3.30am. Those dang birds made such a terrific noise right outside of the bedroom window. Unbelievable, how much "voice" these little creatures have.

Flo, it´s not Sunday yet, but may I have my big weekend breakfast, please. I am hungry this morning.

There is a weekend HD list waiting for me, so there will be little time to w*rk on the wharf buildings. Too early to start now - I´d wake up the neighborhood, if I fire up my table saw - not to forget Petra, who is still slumbering. We will be joining Petra´s aunt at the summer party in the afternoon, so maybe no progress at all today.

Have a rewarding day!

Good evening. Didn't do much today. I watched some 'American Ninja Warrior' this morning. The nurse called a little before noon and wanted to meet me at my fathers place at 1:30pm. So I cleaned up then went down there at 1:02 with a couple bags of laundry and got them started. The nurse was late. She showed up at 2:15. She checked me out then changed the wound vac dressing and that was that. I waited there until the clothes were dry and came back home. I then watched a couple of A-Team episodes then went out to make a video of my drive around the loop. Making the video was simple. Uploading it was a bear! My upload speed is only 0.52 mbps. Snails pace by any other name. I tried three times on Photobucket. First time it failed. Second time the power went out right in the middle of the upload. Third time it failed again. The heck with Photobucket. I went to Youtube and uploaded it there. It took an hour to upload a two and a half minute video and I couldn't do anything on the computer for that hour. Google blocked anything else from running. The video finally uploaded and I wasted no time publishing it and posting it on the forums I go to.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Just coffee please. Thanks

Galaxy- Happy Anniversary to you and YOH!!

Ken- Yes the comment about the owner was directed toward your situation. I agree with what she does. Some do not. We had a  previous owner of the restaurant take tables from the waitresses and keep tips. Usually it was the larger tables or the ones she knew tipped well. She would take the order, and the waitresses would many times have to take the food out and refill the drinks. Her policy was who ever took the order, got the tip. Then each would pitch in and help the other. She rarely “helped” the others. She di however, manage to mill around long enough to get the tip before leaving. Worst part was when she'd bring her kids in. They would bringa drink or a refill thenjust take part or all of the tip because they helped. The owner thought that was ok because they were just kids and it was cute to see them help and they looked forward to it. I told her I her kids sniped any of my tips when I wait....I'll take it out of the cash register on my way out the door. Her kids can handle the customers. I think that would be cute.

Good morning. It's 82° with 78% humidity. The high will be 95°, cloudy and a fair chance of rain.

Not much going on here. Worked on the IIc early this morning. Got the 'L' key working properly. It no longer double clutches or sticks. Just needed a little more cleaning and TLC.

I relabeled the keys on my PC keyboard. I do that periodically because the original gray on black is hard for me to see. I'm somewhat colorblind and shades of gray don't show up well. I can see light gray and dark gray but many of the variations in between do some weird things like show up as silver, black or a color that isn't even related. I also have problems with some shades of blue. So I put labels on the keys that are bold black on stark white. I can see them easily but they wear out in one to two months and must be replaced. This time around I added a clear film on top of the black/white labels. This should make them last much longer.

I have no plans for the rest of the day but I'm pretty sure I'll find something to do.

Happy anniversary to Mr. and Mrs. Galaxy!

Jeff.... I have not followed the van story. Do you know what is the problem? Is it internal engine parts or external carb, fuel lines, etc.?

Jeff.... I have not followed the van story. Do you know what is the problem? Is it internal engine parts or external carb, fuel lines, etc.?

The problem with the vapor lock and fuel boil-off is likely due to a thin gasket between the carb and intake. Putting in a thicker one or one that's heat resistant may alleviate the problem. However the problems with clattering, pinging, loss of power are internal. The push rods are mushroomed on the top ends where they hit the rocker arms. This mushrooming makes the push rods shorter than they should be resulting in the valves not opening as far as they're supposed to and it makes the rocker arms loose because the push rods aren't in constant contact with them. The only way to fix that is to remove the valve trains, replace the push rods with new ones and reinstall the valve trains. On a 318 there's no independent adjustment on the rocker arms. You can't just tighten down a nut to restore the proper tension. Also two of the hydraulic lifters are weak. To replace them requires the heads to be pulled. Now you're talking rebuild kit which on it's own is around $1,200. A far cheaper solution is to get a good used 318 for $500. With installation the cost is still less than a minimal rebuild. So that's what I'm looking at doing.

Hi Guys,

Just wanted to stop in before heading into work. Its the last of the four hour oreintation shifts before moving to a normal 8 hour shift starting Monday. Im only off tomorrow as I am off Friday,Saturday and Sundy of next week as Im going to the IRL race in Toronto. I told them about the race tickets I had before I started and they had no problme with it. They are really nice there.

Havent really felt too good today for some reason so I guess having a four hour shift is okay. I have a list of some model railroad projects Im going to start tonight and work on tomrrow as they are calling for a 90% chance of rain. But if it does stay clear I will be cutting grass here at home and at my mom and dads. Well talk to you fellas sometime after 6:30.

Aw, Shucks, Thanks, for 14 years total we have put up with each other. The next 14 will remain to tell.....

As far as Jeffrey's situation, he told one side, I'll tell the rest:

AS far as Jeffrey's vehicle problem, I started a "Jeffrey vehicle fund" for either a new engine installed or a whole newer vehicle which ever comes first. We have pledges of $550{+?} so far. That MIGHT get him his new engine, IF one can be found. Installation costs can be minimized if Jeffrey's nephew will do it, but if it's the same nephew who did not cut down the tree that hit Jeffrey's trailer, good luck on that coming out "free". If {Cuda}KEN can find him one close, getting it to Jeffrey is the other matter, but Ken is willign to try to locate one and even chip into the fund-taht is the {+?} is for.

I don't have much to spare in my budget at all what with all the out-of-pocket medical costs incurred to find out about MOH's bone disease, but I have pledged anyway. I believe in giving til it hurts if it helps out a fine fellow like Jeffrey, who isn't a drunk carouser who smokes dope all day and runs with questionable women. Whistling

I also belive in paying it forward, and in Karma that comes back around to you for your good deeds.

But that is just me, and my nature. I would even give back to the food pantries once  a month, though I might need their services later that month again!

If jeffrey had a good engine that might give him about 100K usage, that could last him awhile!

Later

RB,

You do not have to remove the heads on that engine to replace the hydraulic lifters. You have take the carb/intake manifold off remove valley cover and there you will find your lifters. To get them out....you take off your valve covers off the heads and remove the rockers arms and remove the push rods, then remove the lifters, a magnet works great for that. Replace with new lifters, do all, not just two, put you push rods back on after you checked for not being bent or badly worn, put rocker arms back on, valve covers. And now would be the time to rebuild your carb. Kit comes with all necessary parts/gaskets. Get a new valley cover gasket, new intake manifold gaskets and put all back together, fire her up and be ready for a big performance change and starting. It is not really no big deal to do all that, don't even need a torque wrench. Cost for all parts should be around 250.00, labor if you do it free, I said this before, that is a easy engine to work on. Your call.

A flathead must have the heads removed to get at lifters.

I'm not talking out of my hat on this...I have rebuilt many gas engines and some diesel.

I would rather do what I just suggested, than pull the motor in that van.

I can understand that. All the push rods and valves were in the block. The only moving part in the head in the head was the thermostat. I don't believe I've ever seen a flathead 318. Was one ever made? As I remember Dodge/Chrysler used mostly straight sixes in their cars and trucks for a long time and the start of cars available with eight cylinder engines had straight eights. The 318 we're used to seeing today is the LA version introduced in 1967.

Got thunderboomers rolling through east to west. Looked at the radar and they don't look like much. Been watching some old movies today. So far 'Mad Max', 'The Delta Force' and 'Earthquake'.

Just got home now, grabbed a burger for dinner. Those are some classic movies Jeff, I loved delta force. If I can remeber, Universal studios had a earthquake ride. That was ten years ago though. I know they had a twister ride around the time of the movie and it was fun.

Im going to be whistling the delta force theme song all night, lol

Evening guys

Haven't popped in here lately. Been busy with the new (hopefully non-temporary) job. A lot of the people there say after 2 weeks I'm doing as good or better than some of the people that have been there for years. Hopefully they keep me.

Trainwise I've been working on a few more kits.

Lately I've been reminising about my mother's previous ride. What brought it up was a guy from my MRR club was complaining his 2010 Chevy Silverado (or whatever the truck is called) struggled with the club's trailer (which is estimated to be 4200 lbs). It was an '03 Ford Expidtion Eddie Bauer. With the 5.4 triton engine and the 3.73 gears in the rear end, that thing could move pretty good. It was also a good puller, It took a Uhual flatbed trailer with an 84 LTD on long-distance drives twice (San Antonio to here, and Miami to here) no problem. Heck, it could hit 85 easily with the trailer and car, and still get 14 mpg (which I think for something that size pulling that much weight is pretty good, it could get up to 17 in the city). Never had an issue with it aside from a clogged filter and muffler (a K&N filter and a quiet flowmaster fixed that). Alas, my mother traded it in around 175k miles on her new Edge and got like 3,200 for it (practially giving it away for what it cost to buy at 25k miles). Part of me wants one cause I used it growing up and learning to drive. They aren't too terribly expensive now, I've seen a few in the low 3,000 range.

Frank, I checked that link to see if I could find a Ford 302 4-bolt main block. I'm kinda wondering if the 302 block I'm using for my 331 stroker build will hold up to the 450 or so horses that a computer program is predicting for it.

Ken, Are those prices correct on the mopar motor rebuilds? My car cost me less than the low end of the spectrum, and I could find a decent truck (see above about the expidition) or van around here for the prices you're predicting; granted a lot of them are probably newer than what Jeff would like.

Jeff, if you could find a replacement vehicles, what would the requirements on it be? I remember you saying a truck or a van with an automatic. But I forgot makers, years, etc.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Yeah the straight 6's Dodge/Chrysler were flat heads and many others. The truck you may have driven around in the Army 3/4 Dodge had a very dependable flat head six in it, Dodge power wagon's had flat head six's. No 318 flat heads, but Buick OHV straight eights were over 318 cu.in. and also don't forget Hudson Hornet's flat head in line 8's, also Packard. If you do decide to do what I suggested to your motor let me know and I will find the intake and exhaust clearance that you need to follow when installing the rocker arms back on, pretty straight forward, but you need a thickness gauge, not expensive to do it. The gauge goes between the rocker arm and the top of the valve where the springs are, usually 18 thousands to 25 thousands, I would have to look it up.

That pic. is a Chrysler 318, 69/88, you can see the lifters in the valley with the push rods sitting on top, they slide right out the top, after removing the push rod.

 Evening Dinners

Flo, Beer and a 440 Buger and Bow Tie Fries

Work Front I had a fair day and Dave sucked Caboose. Made a extra $75.00 so that is better than a stick in your eye!

Work Out Front Day 14 and I have incresed reps by a few in the Military Press and Up Right Rows. Just hope my neck does not hurt Sunday.

Vicent I hate to say it but Mopar cost that much to build! My last 440 long block (Not Counting the Blower) cost $6,000.00 10 years ago and I got off cheap with what I had done with it.

Jeffery Did you know because of the EPA (I hate them most of the time) oil manafactors had to remove ZZPD from oil? With todays roller cams there is no need of it. But with older Cars and Vans with flat tappet cams it can way waste to the valve train. Here is a link for you.

 http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php?topic=46015.0

Luckly I found this posting before I fired up the Road Runner. I bought some STP addative, it cost around $7.00 or so. I may have posted this here, but I had not wrenched for 8 years. While I was undoing the drain plug I got confussed and stripped the oil pan plug. Road Runner will drip oil a little while sitting so I would top off when I played with her.

One day I started hearing Valve Train Noise and I was afraid I had hurt the cam! Bought some more STP addative and ticking was gone!

Ping You need to retard the timing! That is more than likely why it sounds like a diesel. I would retard it 2 degrees and give it a drive. Outer balacer ring will slip and give you a fales timing reading.

 See you all later, Ken

Vincent,

Don't quote me on this...but I don't believe there were 302's with four bolt mains. Just beafier Machined mains with the 8grade hex head main bolts. My 64 427 Thunderbolt Fairlane had four bolt cross mains, but it had 600+ horse. Big Smile

If you are talking about the Jasper motors, they do make great motors, never had a problem with any long block I got from them.

Evening all, how are yinz?

Well today had me getting a haircut, and getting some gasoline for the car.  It also had other events in store, including some railfanning before work.  I caught a Wheeling and Lake Erie 611 train heading west from Belle Vernon to Rook PA, in a little hamlet called Baidland outside of Monongahela PA, crossing an old P&WV bridge by Ringgold High school (for anyone who knows the area).  It was also neat to see the PROTOTYPE of a model you own on that same train.  I didn't pull off to the side of the road in time to snap a photo, but still seeing it counts for something right?

On a less than happy note- I had a drawer that was short 5 dollars at work and had to pay the difference, oh well at least it was only 5 dollars.  I've got another long week, but at least I get to see a concert this week (Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers), and possibly some railfanning.

(My Model Railroad, My Rules)

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

Ford, Dodge. Full size van or full size pickup. The year doesn't really matter as long as it runs good. I can't use something that has to be worked on constantly.

Yep, and mine is a tappet engine. The 318 didn't get the roller cam and roller lifters until 1985.

Good evening. It's a nice night out. Temp is 78 with 85% humidity with a 5mph southeast wind. There's only a 20% chance of rain.

Not much happened here today. I worked on the IIc this morning. Got the 'L' key working properly. The little Apple now works perfectly and thanks to a soak in a 6% hydrogen peroxide solution the case is a nice buff white. The 'old age' yellow went bye-bye! The hydrogen peroxide burn on my right hand is almost completely gone. I spent much of the day watching movies and surfing the net. Didn't play any games.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Alright, 1 post before I go to bed...

Frank, though they are kinda rare, there are 302 with 4-bolt mains. Only the Boss 302 blocks and some aftermarket blocks have them. I've seen one for sale, even bored to the right size to use my 331 stuff but the guy wants $1,300 for it. I have less than $650 into my whole motor build so far. That includes AFR heads, a custom (Ed Curtis) cam, Scat crank and rods, King bearings, SRP pistons, and Scorpion rockers. I haven't gotten to the point where I'll order springs or pushrods yet.

Jeff, Would a larger SUV be out of the question?

Ken, I guess that's why I rarely see built up Mopars. They must be expensive as all get out.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Jeff, Would a larger SUV be out of the question?

If it can carry heavy home appliances and pull a trailer carrying a large bushhog tractor it should be good.

Good morning. It's 75 with 91% humidity. The high will be 95°. Cloudy with a fair chance of rain.

Not feeling good today so I probably won't be on much. Looks like I won't be able to get the van running right or get a large van or full size pickup to replace it so that has me depressed too. I've already had to postpone, reschedule or cancel a number of important appointments because I had no way to get there and back. An appointment that was cancelled was to get my prosthesis refitted so it's more comfortable and won't try to eat my knee for it's lunch. I ended up having to make a number of small modifications myself. It's better but I still get friction burns. I can't even go grocery shopping when I want to. I have to wait until someone else is going. Well, enough of that.

Looks like today will be committed to rest. I have no plans to do anything and I mean nothing.

Not feeling good today so I probably won't be on much. Looks like I won't be able to get the van running right or get a large van or full size pickup to replace it so that has me depressed too.

I'M trying, Jeffrey, I'm trying!
But coming up with $1500-$3K is asking a Lot, as I am all to aware that you know.
The $500+ out of the starting gate is a start!

1} I also don't know what vehicles go for down there except what I see on "craigs list of things", and that ain't so purdy. It's like up here, when the recession hit, used cars were suddenly worth thier weight in gold, and now people STILL think they are, and they aren't; as many who held onto their cars or bought used are now buying new again.  here I see the SAME OLD same OLD cars listed at the same old inflated prices for up to 2 months for  pics that show a rust bucket or that "needs work" and needs as much or more than your van does. Or I love the one "fix or parts {listed for} $3k". You'd think they'd get it..NO ONE is PAYING their price for thier JUNQUE!!

2} You DO  realize you limit yourself by requiring a van or truck. Let someone else do the hauling if you have to, to get a RELIABLE car that you can get around in. Doctors appts for your prostetic are far more important than hauling a washer for somebody! Too many cancellations and they won't see you again, at least around here! I can get any appliance but a refer in my minivan, and it can haul up to 1500lbs. Not so bad. A 4x8 iwill stick out aobut 2 feet, though, but if I had a trailer set up, i could haul it on an old trailer. My friend with a Nissan Rogue SUV and a funky Kia Soul thingy can even haul washers/dryers/dishwashers, etc as he has done it and there is less cargo room in them than in my van! Granted again, he can't haul a refer, but a trailer will help.

SO I short, for anyone who wants to and CAN help out Jeffrey, I am taking pledges, and even if its only $25 or $50, it will help!
I have been in the spot of no transportation, and "medical transportation" is  a JOKE for those who have ever tried to use it and live in the coutnry liek i do or Jeffrey does, so, IF you want to help out Jeffrey, Send me a PM private message consversation by clicking on my name and the start converstion lin k in the upper right side of the window that comes up!

I'd hold a Spagehtti dinner if I could!
Order up a  virtual plate of spaghetti by PM'ing me!

don't despair Jeffrey!
