 Evening Dinners!

Flo, Proten Shake and a Beer.

Ulrich Great to see you are back! Yes Glad Pertia let you keep the layout! Did the Rail spikes I sent ever get there? Hmm Far as hospital, food was petty good at the VA. Only problem was the sizes of the servings! Depressing looking at a ice cream scoop of scrabled eggs for breakfest. Crying

Work Out Front Yep I am still at it and starting to all ready to feel a little better. By next week I hope to start adding some weight to the excises. Still taking it very easy, I know I am not 30 any longer.  Need to add one more excises for shoulders and arms. Plus I need to but the bench press back toghter, cut the up right off so I could stick it under the layout.

While weight loss is notthe goal, you never know. Have cut back on Beer yet a little more. Eating less while I am work. Only real bad habit I need to change is eating supper so late at night.

 See you all later, Ken

Not much went on today. I spent much of the day in bed as I was hurting quite a bit. After the wound vac dressing was changed I watched some TV and that's about it.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Hello everybody ..

We returned from California. Our flight back was rather late getting into Nashville at 1;45 am last night. . Next we drove home and arrived in our garage at 4:15. We have been sleeping most of the day. Zzz

The wedding in CA was very nice. I saw the model railroad layouts in Balboa Park Museums in San Diego for my second time. The layouts are outstanding, and I'll post more about them with pictures when I can. We did mostly family visiting, but we did take time to see the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. It's really a museum. Very interesting.  Lots of stuff to see including a tour of Reagan's AF1.

Good to see there are many people who visited the Diner while I was gone.

Ulrich... Good to see you, and hope all will be okay now.

Afternoon folks,

Chloe, a cup of decaf for me right at the moment, please...

I've been busy getting everything ready for the Cub Den Meeting tonight.  Tonight will be the last meeting as a Den they will have for a few weeks.  We will have another Den Meeting using some Scouts from my old Troop leading it in later July or early August and do leader training the same night....  I think I have put together a fun meeting for the kids, and one that will help them learn some of the first requirements they need for advancement.

Galaxy, you sure seem to have a lot trouble with that there credit card thingie...  I guess I have been lucky over the years.  Only had a couple of problems.  They were both most likely as a result of me shopping at a local big box discount store nearby.  I no longer shop there and haven't had any problems since... Whistling

"What shall we do with the drunkin' sailor,
What shall we do with the drunkin' sailor,
What shall we do with the drunkin' sailor,
Earli' in the mornin'

Put him in a lifeboat and make him bail 'er,
Put him in a lifeboat and make him bail 'er,
Put him in a lifeboat and make him bail 'er,
Earli' in the mornin'

Way, hey, and up she rises,
Way, hey, and up she rises,
Way, hey, and up she rises,
Earli' in the mornin'"

Ah, yes, Capstan Chanties!  One of my old favorites and the very first song I could play and sing with my old guitar the first year I taught...

Dennis, you appear to have the same weather that we have here in the Finger Lakes today.  Dark, gray, damp, and rainin', outside.  I'm still cleaning up and packing away stuff from the picnic last night.  Have to get down cellar and bring up the clean clothes from down there.

My littlest Granddaughter will have her "Moving Up Day" tomorrow.  Next September she will a Kindergartener.  She is growing up way too quick....  Her older sister will be in Second Grade.

Back to w*rk!

Wet, drippy rainy, cold, cludy, windy day pretty much covers it all here in Sunny Alberta. Sheesh, two nice days and here we are again. Can't seem to get the west coast from sending the wet stuff over the mountains Super Angry.

Have to run MOH to get her nails done this afternoon. Rather than drive home and back again, I'll just take my book and wait for her. Nothing pressing to do anyway.

Came up with an idea for the RR the other day to open up about 8 ft of lower level trackage on one side of what was a section of the fiddle yard. I'll put a rock wall behind the main line and the siding so it looks like an open sided tunnel, put some led's in it to light it up and it will look good plus make more trackage more visable. One of the frustrations of a mountain rr is that you tend to end up with too much tunnel trackage. This idea should help resolve some of that.

So that's whats on my agenda for the rest of today after I get MOH home.

Take care all

Dennis

CNCharlie

Galaxy, I'm not surprised you were charged on booking your hotel. Even if you book directly with the hotel as we do, you are often charged immediately if you want the best rate so I expect using a source such as Orbitz has that result. We never use those types of internet outfits and always book direct with the hotel as I would rather pay a little more and pay when we check out of the room. The hotel websites tell you what you get for the various rates and when you pay. Besides, despite what they claim, the best rates are often obtained by booking direct.

CN Charlie

Charlie, we usually book under a different service and in fact we did, and they did NOT charge my card, though I am sure a "hold' was placed on it for the matching funds. We cancelled that one {free to do so} and changed hotels for our comfort  and this one now booked through Orbitz two weeks ago, who immediately charged my card. Had I not checked something else in reference to the card, I would not have realized it, though the billing accouting for this booking did say that {only} "$1.50 due at Hotel" for some mysterious "local charge' they can't explain to me, maybe the hotel can. I missed that part and really only noticed what the total charge was for the room..thinking :"due at time of service".

Oh, and trust me you said "if you want the best rate" yuou have to "pay up front" TRUST ME< we did NOT get the "BEST RATE"! We got the "Rip OFF rate". I will wait to show my AARP card when we are checking out. they probably won't take it.

Every year we go somewhere, have booked with a varitey of services, and never have paid up front, always at the hotel at "time of use", requiring the card hat was used for the booking.

I have ALWAYS been asked for my credit card to charge it at "time of use" to be sure all charges {maybe for long distance phone call charges, etc} and other fees that were paid on the card as well. Up front they have NO IDEA what the "final charges may be", ESPECIALLY in this age of outrageous charges for "convenience food an beverages" within the room's fridge and cabinets. SHould we find that there {it doesn't say so, so i think not} we will have them remove all food and beverages so NO CHARGES will apply as we will be taking our own stuff.

I have only one card I ever use for online pruchases and out of town use, so if it gets compromised, I know where it possibly was compromised.  ANd every year, bless those thieves, it DOES get compromised. Every Year. Like clock work,  By Christmas I expect a call from the card company asking about mysterious charges...like 2 air plane tickets to Bangladesh? Or A Hotel room for a week in Guatemala?

MAYBE it will be different this year? Doubt it.

SO I am a very skeptical individual.

Once burned, twice burned, thrice burned, expect it again.

But not upfront charges. will stick to our regular service.

And I will NOT show/give/allow to swipe the card for duplicate charges at the scene of service either..if they want their money get it from ORbitz, they obviously have an agreement with them.

Our oldest nephew got married this past Saturday in Charleston, SC. So we decided to take a few extra days & see some sights as neither the wife or I had ever been there before. So we left home last Thursday & drove to Statesville, NC where we stayed the night. After dinner we drove over to a rail depot that had under gone a rehab. Turns out the police have moved in & the lot was full of police cars. But they were great & said there wasn't any problem with railfanning & taking pictures there & basically gave us the run of the place. So we caught 1 Norfolk Southern doing some switching, & 2 other engines tied down in the small yard there. All 5 were SD40-2s or SD40-Es.

The next morning we headed to Charleston & some sightseeing. Saturday was more sightseeing & the wedding at 5:30 pm in a really nice restaurant in downtown Charleston. Sounds strange I know, but it was a great venue & the food was outstanding. They choose the restaurant because that's were they became engaged.

Sunday was more sightseeing & boat tours. On Monday we drove back to Statesville, NC & then drove on home Tuesday. The only downsides were the traffic going south & the weather. The weather was simply brutal. High 90s feeling like 105 to 110 with high humidity. The wife took a real beating. Well, me too. The drive back to Pittsburgh wasn't bad at all traffic wise. Made good time coming north.

Charleston is a great city with a lot to see & do. I wouldn't mind going back, but I found out this trip that long drives don't necessarily agree with me anymore. One of the most interesting places for me was "Patriot's Point". Here you can tour the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, the destroyer USS Laffey, & the submarine USS Clamagore.

The flight deck of the USS Yorktown has examples of Naval jet aircraft, while the hanger deck has examples of WWII prop driven aircraft. All very, very interesting. Especially for those of us who served in a different branch of service.

Needless to say, the grass at home is screaming to be cut, as well as the hedges. There are a number of loads of laundry to be done, & a seemingly endless list of errands that need attended to. Well none of it is going to get done today as I'm taking the day off. Call it my personal recovery time. Which may even extend into tomorrow if I'm lucky. Looks like this coming weekend is going to busy so I need to rest up for a little railfanning on Saturday. Hope everyone is having a good week...

Good Morning,

Another cloudy cool day here with the possiblity of showers this afternoon depending on which weatherman you believe.

I did run a passenger train yesterday or sort of one as it was a few express reefers with a coach. Express reefers are good as they aren't very long and look good on the 22" radius curves. I had the Northern on the point. It is now sitting on its storage track in the yard. I did have one derailment as anything over a scale 45 mph can have that result. It really is too big for my layout but I'm glad I bought it as it really is a beauty. I did manage to knock one of the express reefers off the table but luckily the table is only 30" and the floor is laminate so the damage was confined to the roof and walkway coming off. That will be repaired shortly.

Well time to get to that reefer and then, who knows. The earth is too wet to do any garden clean-up and it looks like rain again. Some days I struggle with retirement. I did like doing those financial work-outs for stores and travelling out to them but have to admit I didn't do many in the last couple of years as the number of stores we supplied was dwindling. That was mostly due to the decline of retail businesses in most small towns across the country.

Ken- Most people have given up on correct spelling anymore. Don’t worry as long as it sounds close, we get it.

I have a simple trick I use. I find an old conversation in my list of PM's and type up my post in the reply box there. Spell check still works there. When I finish typing I copy the text then delete it. I come back here and paste my post into the reply box here, do whatever else I need to do then click 'Submit Your Reply'. It takes a little bit longer but it works. In fact I did it with this post.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and the big breakfast please, scrambled and the bacon soft, whole grain wheat for the toast and strawberry jam thank you.

SurpriseBoy time flies!!! Hard to believe June is almost over! Busy weekend here with the 4th of July celebration and now….Brenda has brought the Circus to townBang Head. Yup. Aug 26th for one day only and two big shows. People are already calling to see if the elephants are gonna set up the tents. I guess somethings will always be the same. Myself, I just want a jar of Tiger poopYes. Not many people around here have a jar of tiger poopCool. Several gardeners are interested in the poop too. Small town folk. Just can’t get enough of ‘em.  (shakes head).

Nothing but the same-ol-same-ol here, just skimmed the pages since I been out so I hope I didn’t miss anything real important. I did see where I can add myself to the recent Acid Reflux folks. Prylosec (sp?) worked ok, but Nexium has it lickedYeah. No issues at all. Just drop one with the Ginseng in the morning and good as new. Can't say I miss the burn and it's cheaper than the Tums I went through I tell you what. I also see where Ulrich is ….OK, saw his post. I’m happy he is on the mend and it wasn’t much worse. I’m also glad they seemed to have reached an agreement that both can live with. Thirty years is a long time and quite frankly, a train set isn’t worth my wife. Luckily, I doubt if I’ll ever have to make the choice, I’m glad Ulrich didn’t either. But I know I would never offer the “alternative hobby” as G suggested. That would seal my fate!Dead Laugh

Ulrich- Welcome back my friend.Angel

Welp, gotta go fire up the oven at w*rk. Several pizza’s to make for the mine. Then, I guess I best get the yard mowed. They say we are a touch over 9 inches of rain this month compared to 2 inches last year, so it’s no wonder I’m mowing twice a week.

Oh and Brenda’s Blood Sugar is now down to the 120’s low 130’s with the morning spike at around 200. Takes her meds and an hour later it’s down to 120 something. She’s happy.

Still haven’t w*rked on the chainsaw, but I did fix the baby buggy’s wheel. Vietnamese woman with a flat tire. Scary thing if you think about it.

Best get going, they called and upped the order. Gotta go in sooner.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good Afternoon!

Aside from a short, but refreshing snooze after lunch, I am making good progress with the engine house. I have organized the construction w*rk in subassemblies and have now all the missing walls, including those of the annex laid out, glued and pinned down until the glue has dried. I might even start at the roof structure. hey, this is just like Henry Ford building his model T! Weekend come and I should have something presentable!

I am really enjoying w*rking on the engine house after so many idle days in the hospital, being doomed to do nothing, just wait for a doc or a nurse to show up. For the first few days I could not even get out of bed, as I was hog-tied to an IV bag.

Just have calculated how many shingles I need to make - 1,320 Ick!

You know for the days you want to watch instead of switch.

Yeah, I do that a lot.  I like to watch my trains run through my scenery, and I rationalize it by saying that I'm testing my trackwork, engines and rolling stock.  I'd have to say that I get very few derailments on my main lines, because I "test" them so much.

Hot weather here, too, for a couple of days, but we should get another nice weekend.

Is it just me, or do Asthma and food allergies usually go together?

Could be. I had problems with asthma when I was young. Around 1980 I started having severe problems with bananas. Later cherries were added to the list and just ten years ago avocados. Now I have trouble with tomatoes but I believe that's linked with the gall bladder problems I have.

Morning all.

Today is a work day again, so no model railroad work really but at least it's payday-I was planning to save up some money to buy about 10 Wheeling hoppers.  I think I am coming down with a cold or allergies.ironically enough I started to get this cold while reading "The Stand" by Stephen King-probably one of the greatest books ever written.  The weather here has been on two ends.  It has either been 90 degrees and scorching humidity to do anything, or it has been severely thunderstorming with tornado warnings to the north of my town.

I used to be in the hospital every weekend when I was young due to my asthma being severe, plus having pnunomia.  Oh plus the time my dad acidentally fed me peanut butter and I had to be rushed to the hospital when I was a baby (Peanut allergies).  Is it just me, or do Asthma and food allergies usually go together?

I've also been doing a sketch of dream layout-if I had unlimited space of course.  It's a dogbone with two different railroads, some uphill grades curving up to a coal mine, trestles, tunnels, etc. Put it also has a branch into the middle of the room for a loop to allow continous running.  You know for the days you want to watch instead of switch.

(My Model Railroad, My Rules)

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

Well,. we will NEVER book anything with Orbitz again!

They CHARGE your credit card FULL price when you book your hotel at that time you book it!

I DO NOT like that idea! and NO, it was NOT spelled out that I would be charged then!

There had better be NO problems at the hotel as it is ALREADY charged and paid for!

I'm also gonna spring the AARP discount on them and ask for that refunded to me!

The only thing"due" at the hotel is some local fee of $1.50 {really, I mean really?"} I'll pay that in cash.

They had better NOT ask for my credit card!

We will see.

I wonder if we had to use the "FREE cancellation", how they would handle it?

I understand many reservations place a HOLD on your funds, but out and out charge and seize your money for their use BEFORE you go??? NO NO nannet!

Never again!

Good morning. It's 72° with 100% humidity. The high will be 85° with a higher than fair chance of showers and thunderstorms.
 with

I'm sore and stiff this morning. My neck, back and right knee are telling me all about the weather today. I don't think I'll be doing much else other than getting the wound vac dressing changed. My back feels OK until I try lifting something. Even a seven pound disk drive makes it hurt. I know it's just the weather making it act up but I'll not be taking any chances. After the nurse leaves I'll take a couple of oxycodone tabs and go back to bed.

My father and step mother are well on their way to southeast Louisiana to pick up the new RV he bought yesterday. They've joined the green league as well. Solar panels have been installed on the roof of the RV garage and have been joined into the service line to the house.

Be back later.

SO...Jeffrey has  a Birthin' day coming up?

You mean he is suddenly getting oldER?

Perhaps more wisER?

We'll have to see about throwing a party!

Who should we invite?

Ulrich: There are three hospitals around here, each serving up "gourmet food" ala Restaruant style! You can take the daily dose{regular menu offering}, OR order ala carte! For a month, it seems the do run the daily dose for the week, and when I was in recently for pneumonia for 2.5 weeks, they "recycled the daily dose" on me each week, so I ordered alternative ala carte style for the remainder! Came out well! I guess you can also, within limits, order ala carte what you would like, If they can make it for you, they will. Also, you can pretty much, within limits order anything anytime you are hungry, not necessarily just at meal time. Of course it depends on if you have food limitaitons.

Good Morning Gang!

What a feeling to wake up in the morning in your own bed!

I had more than my share of stays in hospitals in the last couple of years, I promise I won´t be going there anymore Wink

We have a some sunshine this morning - nice for a change. The past few weeks have been dull and gray and way too cold for the time of the year.

No real plans for the day. If I feel strong enough, I will do some w*rk on the engine house.

Have a good one!

Gidday All, sounds like you North American guys could do with a couple of ice cold jugs of homemade lemonade and mint, whereas I’ll be quite happy with a hot chocolate in front of the fire.
Good to see you back Ulrich.

It's a nice 75° here even with the humidity at 93%. Rain chance is 50/50 and tomorrow is looking like more.

Had a little problem with the wound vac today. It developed a small leak and it didn't take long for it to become a problem child. I checked everywhere on the dressing for a leak but couldn't find it. So I worked my way up the line and found the leak was where the vacuum line joined to ,the collection tank. I put a little super glue on the spot and the problem child became an angel again. For the past hour it's only gurgled a few times and that's exactly what it's supposed to do. It only has to last til the nurse comes tomorrow. In other news my father bought a new RV this morning. He and my step mother are on their way to southeast Louisiana to pick it up.

Nothing much else happened today. I watched a few movies, played some games, got my butt kicked in the 1981 version of Castle Wolfenstien and generally had some fun.

That's all for today, see y'all tomorrow.
