Had to shut down earlier due to a savage line of thunderboomers coming through. Right now there's a lull so I came online to the weather radar. It doesn't look good. There's a whole bunch of severe weather moving my way from Beaumont and it looks to be strung out at least forty miles. At the rate it's moving I'll be ducking it in just a little while. The weather alert I'm seeing is posted below. Looks like it's gonna get real here.AT 252 PM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE METEOROLOGISTS DETECTED ALINE OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS...ALONG A LINE EXTENDING FROM KROTZSPRINGS TO EUNICE TO RAGLEY TO 8 MILES SOUTHEAST OF CALL TOSARATOGA...MOVING NORTH AT 15 MPH.THE LINE OF STRONG THUNDERSTORMS WILL AFFECT AREAS IN AND AROUND...OLD SALEM...KOUNTZE...WASHINGTON...BANCROFT...HARMONY AND MAMOU.THE PRIMARY THREATS FROM THESE STORMS ARE FREQUENT LIGHTNING AND WIND GUSTS 35 TO 45 MPH...WHICH COULD DOWN TREE LIMBS AND BLOW AROUND UNSECURED SMALL OBJECTS. SEEK SHELTER IN A SAFE HOME OR BUILDING UNTIL THESE STORMS HAVE PASSED.THESE STORMS COULD PRODUCE RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF ONE TO TWO INCHES IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME...RESULTING IN PONDING OF WATER AROUND LOW LYING ROADWAYS. Just checked the radar here and it's showing pretty much what Jeffrey is describing. It was nice till about 2 then it all started to go downhill.
Sure quiet round the diner today, but then it is summer with a long weekend comming up for you folks south of the border as well as those of us in Canada Eh....
Take MOH to her sisters tomorrow so I'll be on the road there and back. About a 325 miles return trip. Maybe depending how I feel, I'll spend tomorow night there and come home Sat. As someone else mentioned a few days ago, I don't seem to do the "long haul" very well any more.
Well, best shut down and wathch the storm rolling in.
Best wishes to all.

well,
AS KEN would say, I had a CABOOSE day!
~I went to wally world, all fine
~I went to my fathers, all fine
~went to the psychiatrist ALL NOT FINE!! I pulled up behind a pickup wiating to turn left across the very busy 45MPH road on the way there, and BAM! some idiot kid REAR ENDED ME IN THE CABOOSE! Probably on his dang phone texting and NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO the stopped vehicles in front of him@!!!!!
The bumer was so damaged and hanging off the vehicle that even with duck tape and a bungee cord, it wasn't drivable, so had to get it towed to the KIA dealer repair center. Dunno the damage yet!
Went directly to my agent, about 5 miles back down the same road. He said with it being the kids fault, we should get a rental car from his insurnace. OH,...The kid got ticketed for "following to close", and his father who showed up is none to happy according to the Sheriffs officer who came when I called 911. However NY is a no-fault state. BUT I pointed out to my agent that I cannot have just ANY OLD muchkin rent-a-wreck!!! I am handicapped and get around with a cane and need a vehicle I can get in/out of and the Hyundai Elantra MOH has is NOT QUITE IT. I need a MINIVAN. LIKE I DRIVE! There IS a reason I dirve one!
I am getting ahead of myself, AFter the insurance agent, We wen t to the collision center where the guy there hooked me up with Enterprise Rent a wreck, who had a Jeep Compass {a bigger one of their line fortuatntely as one model's door is about only 18 inches or 2 feet wide, I need WIDER the better and the higher the better {Within reason, NO 6" lifted kits for me}. NOW , MIND YOU ENTERPRISE told ME when I called they had NO CARS AVAILABLE? AND NO MINIVANS OR SUVS AT ALL, BUT collision man calls and they have one??????
SO, I got smart and called his insurance company WHILE AT Enterprise to ask if it was covered, and they apparently had to call the collision center to see "if you can drive it the way it is, there by mitigating the rental necessity". SO after he called me back, saying NO it was NOT drivable the way it is, and they had to authorize a rental, he chatted witht the rental agent who VERIFIED i was INDEED handicapped and getting around with a cane, {DUH! who makes such up?} and needed an SUV, as they had no minivans.
So it SHOULD be completely covered! we shall see! With the AUThorizstion for the SUV Up-charge! and NO getting around it, I HAVE TO HAVE a vehicle, as MOH drives around for work in The ELantra, so I cannot just drop MOH off to work and have it for the day.
I will get $125 of the $135 {$10 in taxes} of the TOWING charge back from MY insurance as we have towing, and I thought we had rental just in case, but not, so I added it for the $37 it will cost, I may drop it later, but that could be cheap compaired to rental costs!
I had an intense headache right away, but thought due to the STRESS at the time, and it has subsided. Now, though, my back has some pian. but it was late to get my second dose of regular med so is it that or new injury? MY agent said if I go to see someone, we need to get a claim auth from his insurance.
The kids father owned the car, and his name is an odd one, the same as one guy I graduated high school with, wonder if him? We were not what you would call "buddies" in H.S.
~ SO far, I think things have goon smoothly? I go the Kia towed to the garage, COVERED, got aproval for the rental and got the approval for an upgrade to SUV COVERED, and the parts should not be hard to get so says the collision repair guy we will see!
~ I WAS going to load up stuff in to the van this AM before I left for my fathers, good thing I did NOT.
~ For the fact that we are HIGHLY covered {I thought we had rental coverage too?? BUt NOT} for both liability AND for Underinsured/Uninsured highly covered, I should not be out much, I HOPE.
~ AND my back may just be stressd a bit, maybe pulled a muscle.
~ now I don't know how many of you believe such things, But I thought I just HAD to glance at my rearview mirror just before he hit and saw the front of his hood bow down and KNEW he was gonnna hit me, so I was LUCKY I didn't get jammed into the pickup in front of me!!!!!! i had a just-in-time premonition.
So it still, as KEN would say , sucks caboose! I haven't had an accident since 1990! ANd that one wasn't my fault either!
~ now watch, though they say NO, my rates will GO UP! Though they should get all from the other guys insurance, at least THEY HAD INSURANCE!
I go for a lie down now.... my head still hurts! Well its about bed time anyway!

Hi Guys,
Weird day today as it was sunny but poured rain for most of the day ( and is right now also ). We have had alot of rain this week as I have only been out once on the bike. I was able to get grass cut the other day. I picked up a new dewalt bit set today. I start the ne job on July 7th ( Jeff's Birthday also ) and am excited and a little nervouse also. Great thing is that it is right around the corber from my house, maybe a 3 minute drive or 10 minute walk. I plan on walking most days to save gas and burn some extra calories.
I cant belive that we are at the end of June as kids last day is tomorrow so Im sure they are excited. Unfortunatley the summer always flys by, We in the northeast had a bad winter so am hoping for a hot July,August and September. My spring-summer model railroading hiatus ( as each year ) will go a few more weeks until I start to put pen to paper as what projects I want to do in the Fall and winter and what supplies I will need to do them. So far I only have weathering freight cars on that list but weathering them will take months if not years to fully complete. But as long as we have nice weather days off work will mean bike rides and enjoying the summer. Nothing better then a cup of coffee on the back deck in the morning flipping through a MR.
Looks like the storms have petered out for now. Radar still shows a lot of nasty stuff offshore heading this way but it might not be here til after midnight.Well I didn't get much accomplished today. I watch a few movies, sat through a few power failures that only lasted a few minutes each. The humidity here is ridiculous. It has to be experienced to be believed. It's pegged at 100%. It's 69 in here and I'm sweating!I made it a point to call my father earlier. He was on his way from Hammond with a new 2014 RV. My stepmother was in close behind in her car. I suggested to him that he find a place to ride out the storms until the weather cleared enough that he could proceed safely. It's not wise to be driving something bigger than many billboards when high winds are blowing across the roads.Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow provided the weather doesn't bring down the power lines.

Work Out Front Pushed my self just a tad tonight and I feel it some. Not in a bad way, but the old Muscles are starting to wonder what I am up to? Need to dig around for some more plates and fix the bench press. No working out this Friday, because I will be working in the yard!
See you all later, Ken

Hiya gang!
Getting ready to turn in. Tomorrow is my last day with KIA. Chevy dealer nearby wanted me bad, so I'm going there! best part is I will have my weekends back! Yahoo!!

kbkchooch Galaxy, Doesn't your neck hurt,,,a little?? Sound like it was a hard enough impact that you should at least be stiff and sore',,,hope you are OK
Nope, my neck desn't hurt, and the headache has fully subsided.
My back, however, lower back {where I already have problems}, feels like I have pulled every muscle in it ! Hence the reason I am up at 12:45am my time, and I never did comfy easily at going to bed at 9:15pm-usual time, I eventually drifted off.
I DID call my agent last night and told him that my back was agravated, but at that time, It was also 3 hours past my evening back pain med time/take and so was it new pain or just old pain? He said if I have to see someone, and I will go to the walkin tomorrow, i/we have to get authorization from his insurance company!
BUt, this is new pain, feels like every muscle back there has been pulled or strained. DIferent from the regular get-injections-pain. That is more set in with the bones, this appears to be all muscular.
I don't know what they can do for me, I already take a muscle relaxer and a strong pain med.
Ulrich:
Looks great!
Are you going to make the roof panels removable? I hope so. There is too much nice detail inside to hide it.
Dave
I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!
Good Morning!
The sun is up - nice to start the day when the sun is shining. Unfortunatelya not for long. We are under a thunderstorm warning early afternoon. I just hope it won´t be as bad as a couple of weeks ago.
I got up early, just as they sun rose. That´s 3.45am in my neck of the woods. After enjoying a hot mug load of coffee, I started w*rk on the engine house, mainly adding to the roof structure. I think it is coming along nicely!
I also added a little stove to the annex - Maine winters can be quite cold, so I am told
hon30critterAre you going to make the roof panels removable?
Dave - I am afraid that will not be possible. There will be no roof panels, but individually laid out shingles, which I will make from that sheet of veneer. I need more than 1,300 of them
Come to think of it, once the engine house is completed, it will consist of more than 2,500 parts - incredible!Half of that will be the shingles ...
Galaxy - I am sorry to hear about your accident! Good that you escaped (mostly) unhurt - all other things can be settled with money (of which we don´t have any).
Well, I got to get ready for the day - there is a short HD list awaiting my attention!
morning! I finally got some sleep!

A happy Friday to you all. It looks like we're getting another perfect weekend here in New England. It's so nice even the weathermen have been able to get it right.
galaxy, you may be entitled to some compensation for your pain and suffering. Now that you're on a first-name basis with the kid's insurance claims agent, let him know that you are in some pain. The last time I had a claim like this, a lawyer friend told me to take the medical bills and multiply them by 2 or 3. The claims agent will be happy to give you that much to avoid a lawsuit.
My appointment went well. The back roads proved to be about what I'd expected - not much faster, but certainly more pleasant and I was moving all the time. The blood sugar has come down dramatically, which was the whole idea. Perhaps most important was the quick check of my shoulder which I hurt at the end of ski season. It still bothers me some, but he did a quick check. He says I just need to do more range-of-motion exercises, but yeah, shoulders take forever. I was afraid I would need surgery, which would end my hockey career, but that is no longer a worry.
Weed Whacker Weekend, either cutting some tall grass or just getting frustrated trying to start the old thing. It hasn't run in years.

Morning all. I hope you all are having good days. Not much for me today, work and Possibly trying to see if I can get the Reading unit leading a local here today. It's about 8:30AM, and it is already in the 60's or so, its going to be a real scorcher today.

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway. As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).
Ulrich: The engine house is looking great!
Galaxy: If that new pain persists you should get it checked out.
Good morning. It's 71° with 100% humidity. There's a significant chance of showers and thunderstorms. The high will be 85° and will feel like 93°.Just waiting for the nurse to call so I can the wound vac dressing changed. This one has given no problems. I hope it's replacement works equally well. Other than that I have no plans other than going back to bed and getting rest. The neck and back pain isn't as bad as yesterday but it's still letting me know it doesn't think much of the weather. Be back later.

Ulrich ... You're a talented model railroader, and I like your engine house.
It's kind of hectic here. We have company coming later today for a few days visit. We're not ready for them. We just returned from our trip.
I'm happy about my photo published in August MR. The editors did a great job as usual.

Yup, I feel for you Galaxy. As you may recall, the same thing happened to me two weeks ago. Cars still in the body shop and won't get it back till next week sometime. Of course the sun is shining and I don't have my convertable.
Nothing like an accident to ruin not just one day but several.
Feeling for you Galaxy
Ulrich, I have to save this thread! I have been looking and looking for a single engine shed kit, but do not like anything I have found, so I had made up my mind to scratch build one, and then along comes your beautiful single engine shed. I hope you do not mind if I use your pictures as a guideline for buiding mine. I have not ever scratchbuilt, and can only hope my results are a fraction of yours. Actually, I need two.
Below is my 7th attempt on my layout.

Steve
Life is tough, but it's tougher if your'e stupid.
Good Afternoon Gang!
I spent quite some time making the first batch of shingles this afternoon. Now my hand is hurting like mad from making nearly 1,000 shingles! And that´s only 2/3 of what I will need to do the roof! I know you can be laser-cut roofing strips, but a) they are noit available in my neck of the woods, making them a little to dear for me, and b), doing it yourself is half the fun - even when the hands are hurting. I don´t even want to think about what it will be like putting all those shingles onto the roof - with a pair of tweezers ...
Steve - I am far from being an expert or anywhere near perfect. This is my first scratchbuilt building, and there is a learning curve to it. Most important is to have a good scale drawing, the right tools and materials and a lot of patience. The materials I used are the ones I had on hand or were able to source locally. The frames were done in pine stripwood, which does not glue well or stain well. Use balsa instead! Easy to cut, glues well and stains nicely - but also breaks easily!
I like your layout - but there is room for some improvement. Most of your track is neatly line up with the walls or the edge of the layout - this will give it a somewhat artificial look. Try to picture your scenery and then let the track meander a little.
So far, we were spared from those thunderboomers heading our way. I guess they will hit us when it´s sleeping time ...
Stay safe!
Garry - My August issue of MR arrived about an hour ago. The first thing I did was go to Trackside Photos, and there it was. And a 2 page spread to boot. Not only an excellent photograph, but some outstanding modeling as well. You did good... I'm also envious I might add.

Not a single storm around here this morning yet the power went out for three and a half hours. My father got the new RV home OK yesterday. He found out rather quickly that he'd have to have some surgery performed on the RV garage to get it in there. So this morning he had my nieces husband go up on top of the RV and remove a piece of trim and the two 2x6's that were holding it. With that out of the way it fit just fine. The garage now has a storm in it. One minor thing was with the power out there was no power for the tools he was using. So they fired up the RV's genny and they had power for the tools.I went down to lend a hand and to wait on my nurse. Our phones don't work without power so I was just hoping she'd come out anyway. Well the power came back on just as we were wrapping out there and the nurse called about thirty minutes later. She changed out the wound vac dressing and went on her merry way. I was going to go back home but my van didn't want to start. So I let it sit for another hour while I took the opportunity to check out the forums I frequent, six in all and eBay to see if I had any messages there. A little over an hour later I tried starting the van and it fired up with no problem. For some reason it won't start when the engine is hot. It has to cool down to the temp of water from my water heater which is about a hundred degrees. No hard cranking, it just won't start. Once it cools down it starts right up.
Way to go Garry,
I am impressed, very nice magazine layout.
You know how you can tell an Artist by their painting, well I could pick your modelling out of all others. You have a special flair or flavour that you put into your work that makes it stand out for me. I love it.
I was back to see all the doctors again yesterday and had some more scope work done that confirmed that at this point there is no opening into my esophogus and they are sending me for another Cat Scan. I guess if they have to open it surgically it is a fairly delicate complicated surgery, going in through the top of your chest. They would rather not have to do that. I don't really care, I just want it open. I do not want to go through the rest of my life on a feeding tube although it is better that not being here at all.
Been jacking around with some backgrounds today, most of them have been up a coouple of years but there is a section that is about 10 feet that doesn't have any and as yet still hasn't, kind of complicated and taking lots of thought.
I have reached the point in my life that I realize that my layout is not going to be museum quality and good enough will prevail as long as I can live with it and my Grandson likes it. The dextarity of my hands and my eyesite are starting to limit some things and I must just accept that. Just hoping and working at it to get it closer to complete, but still have a long way to go.
Ulrich, you Engine House is a real winner. So glad you are back. Just don't tire yourself out on things. Go a little at a time and enjoy the journey.
Hope you all have a great week-end, even the two crash victims, Dennis and Galaxy.

Ulrich, HA, I knew I was going to get hit on that... chuckle. I was thinking that I could break it up with scenery so that it would not be so noticeable. BUT... I'll work on iteration number 8. Meandering it is. Thank you for the advice. Not an expert on scratchbuiding? Coulda fooled me.
P.S. Thunderboomers here.
Evening guys,
Another warm one today on the final school day for the kids before the summer break. I manage to only get slightly burned. I got in before lunch and the stong sun came out. I am planning on a bike ride in the morning. Just getting my stuff ready now. I also am making a list of some office supplies that I want ( I kind of have a thing for office supplies, lol ) I will probably wait until mid August because thats whn the sales start for kids going back ( wow, that makes summer sound so short huh? ) Also am still doing a list of things I want to start on this fall. I am thinking about a major overhaul one one section of the layout and adding a new industry that I could work on during the winter ( dont want to even think of snow at the moment though ). Have a great night guys
Ulrich : That is some impressive modelling.

Flet Pretty Darn Good Today! I don't know if it was just by chances or the Weight Lifting is starting to pay off? Either way when I finally stop running I felt good! On the house front, got most of the left side of the roof cleaned off and gutter (Gutter Remains) cleaned. I would have got the whole thing done but it was clouding up so I cut the front grass.
I would have finshed the roof but Sue said Sparkie Wanted To Go BY BY! So, to keep Sparkie / really my wife I took Sue and Sparkie By By. Rather have finshed cleaning the roof but what can I say?
Then I did some running, made the first House Payment which was a little less painful with getting my MO State Tax Refund for $575.00. (I work In MO, but live in ILL) Took Sue to the store and bought some food, Shop and Save was running spend $50.00 and get $10.00 off today! When I got home I started cleaning out the garage a little. Foud around another 120 pounds in plates so I will be set for a while.
Ulrich Engine House looks great! Made me think about the next layout again with at the time keeping the house! Ulrich, did you ever get the rail spikes?
Later, Ken
Howdy.
Tom and JohnBoy .... Thanks for commenting on my photo in MR.
JohnBoy .... Prayers continue about your health.
Speaking of car accidents. Dan, one of the 3 model railroaders here at the lake, crashed his car and it was totaled. He and his wife were in the car and were not injured thankfully.
Hasn't been a busy day but there's been a bit to do. Most of it I posted earlier. I may have found the problem that's not letting my van start when the engine is hot. A member of another forum suggested it may be the ballast resistor. I took it off and looked at it. Doesn't appear to be any damage to it but you never know. That fine coiled wire in it could break contact when it gets hot. I'll get a new one as soon as I can and change it out. It could explain a few burned out ignition coils.Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.
It seems, as if our weather has turned to normal, which means it is an overcast day, a 90% chance of rain and temperatures not above 17°C. We usually have only two seasons here - Spring and three different kind of Winter (green, gray and white).
Ken - I asked Petra about any mail from the US. Yes, the spikes have arrived while I was in the hospital. She had put it into the drawer where I park my MRRing stuff and forgot to tell me about. Boy, are those spikes tiny! I´ll have to borrow my friends Optivisor to install them. Thanks, Ken, for taking the trouble and getting them for me. Some day, I´ll be able to make up for that!
Garry - my August MR has not yet arrived, but I am all edgy to see that picture of your layout.
Johnboy - continuing
Ray didn´t show up yesterday - must we worry about him?
No plans for the day. My right wrist is hurting a little from making all those shingles, so I am not sure whether I´ll do some MRRing today.
Have a good one!
