Good morning. It's 72° with 100% humidity. The high will be 85° with a higher than fair chance of showers and thunderstorms. with I'm sore and stiff this morning. My neck, back and right knee are telling me all about the weather today. I don't think I'll be doing much else other than getting the wound vac dressing changed. My back feels OK until I try lifting something. Even a seven pound disk drive makes it hurt. I know it's just the weather making it act up but I'll not be taking any chances. After the nurse leaves I'll take a couple of oxycodone tabs and go back to bed.My father and step mother are well on their way to southeast Louisiana to pick up the new RV he bought yesterday. They've joined the green league as well. Solar panels have been installed on the roof of the RV garage and have been joined into the service line to the house.Be back later.

Well,. we will NEVER book anything with Orbitz again!
They CHARGE your credit card FULL price when you book your hotel at that time you book it!
I DO NOT like that idea! and NO, it was NOT spelled out that I would be charged then!
There had better be NO problems at the hotel as it is ALREADY charged and paid for!
I'm also gonna spring the AARP discount on them and ask for that refunded to me!
The only thing"due" at the hotel is some local fee of $1.50 {really, I mean really?"} I'll pay that in cash.
They had better NOT ask for my credit card!
We will see.
I wonder if we had to use the "FREE cancellation", how they would handle it?
I understand many reservations place a HOLD on your funds, but out and out charge and seize your money for their use BEFORE you go??? NO NO nannet!
Never again!
Morning all.
Today is a work day again, so no model railroad work really but at least it's payday-I was planning to save up some money to buy about 10 Wheeling hoppers. I think I am coming down with a cold or allergies.ironically enough I started to get this cold while reading "The Stand" by Stephen King-probably one of the greatest books ever written. The weather here has been on two ends. It has either been 90 degrees and scorching humidity to do anything, or it has been severely thunderstorming with tornado warnings to the north of my town.
I used to be in the hospital every weekend when I was young due to my asthma being severe, plus having pnunomia. Oh plus the time my dad acidentally fed me peanut butter and I had to be rushed to the hospital when I was a baby (Peanut allergies). Is it just me, or do Asthma and food allergies usually go together?
I've also been doing a sketch of dream layout-if I had unlimited space of course. It's a dogbone with two different railroads, some uphill grades curving up to a coal mine, trestles, tunnels, etc. Put it also has a branch into the middle of the room for a loop to allow continous running. You know for the days you want to watch instead of switch.
(My Model Railroad, My Rules)
These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway. As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

You know for the days you want to watch instead of switch.
Yeah, I do that a lot. I like to watch my trains run through my scenery, and I rationalize it by saying that I'm testing my trackwork, engines and rolling stock. I'd have to say that I get very few derailments on my main lines, because I "test" them so much.
Hot weather here, too, for a couple of days, but we should get another nice weekend.
Quite late in life, I seem to have developed an allergy to nuts. Nothing serious, but sometimes after I eat nuts I have a short sneezing fit.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
Good Afternoon!
Aside from a short, but refreshing snooze after lunch, I am making good progress with the engine house. I have organized the construction w*rk in subassemblies and have now all the missing walls, including those of the annex laid out, glued and pinned down until the glue has dried. I might even start at the roof structure. hey, this is just like Henry Ford building his model T! Weekend come and I should have something presentable!
I am really enjoying w*rking on the engine house after so many idle days in the hospital, being doomed to do nothing, just wait for a doc or a nurse to show up. For the first few days I could not even get out of bed, as I was hog-tied to an IV bag.
Just have calculated how many shingles I need to make - 1,320

Good Morning,
Another cloudy cool day here with the possiblity of showers this afternoon depending on which weatherman you believe.
I did run a passenger train yesterday or sort of one as it was a few express reefers with a coach. Express reefers are good as they aren't very long and look good on the 22" radius curves. I had the Northern on the point. It is now sitting on its storage track in the yard. I did have one derailment as anything over a scale 45 mph can have that result. It really is too big for my layout but I'm glad I bought it as it really is a beauty. I did manage to knock one of the express reefers off the table but luckily the table is only 30" and the floor is laminate so the damage was confined to the roof and walkway coming off. That will be repaired shortly.
Galaxy, I'm not surprised you were charged on booking your hotel. Even if you book directly with the hotel as we do, you are often charged immediately if you want the best rate so I expect using a source such as Orbitz has that result. We never use those types of internet outfits and always book direct with the hotel as I would rather pay a little more and pay when we check out of the room. The hotel websites tell you what you get for the various rates and when you pay. Besides, despite what they claim, the best rates are often obtained by booking direct.
Well time to get to that reefer and then, who knows. The earth is too wet to do any garden clean-up and it looks like rain again. Some days I struggle with retirement. I did like doing those financial work-outs for stores and travelling out to them but have to admit I didn't do many in the last couple of years as the number of stores we supplied was dwindling. That was mostly due to the decline of retail businesses in most small towns across the country.

Our oldest nephew got married this past Saturday in Charleston, SC. So we decided to take a few extra days & see some sights as neither the wife or I had ever been there before. So we left home last Thursday & drove to Statesville, NC where we stayed the night. After dinner we drove over to a rail depot that had under gone a rehab. Turns out the police have moved in & the lot was full of police cars. But they were great & said there wasn't any problem with railfanning & taking pictures there & basically gave us the run of the place. So we caught 1 Norfolk Southern doing some switching, & 2 other engines tied down in the small yard there. All 5 were SD40-2s or SD40-Es.
The next morning we headed to Charleston & some sightseeing. Saturday was more sightseeing & the wedding at 5:30 pm in a really nice restaurant in downtown Charleston. Sounds strange I know, but it was a great venue & the food was outstanding. They choose the restaurant because that's were they became engaged.
Sunday was more sightseeing & boat tours. On Monday we drove back to Statesville, NC & then drove on home Tuesday. The only downsides were the traffic going south & the weather. The weather was simply brutal. High 90s feeling like 105 to 110 with high humidity. The wife took a real beating. Well, me too. The drive back to Pittsburgh wasn't bad at all traffic wise. Made good time coming north.
Charleston is a great city with a lot to see & do. I wouldn't mind going back, but I found out this trip that long drives don't necessarily agree with me anymore. One of the most interesting places for me was "Patriot's Point". Here you can tour the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, the destroyer USS Laffey, & the submarine USS Clamagore.
The flight deck of the USS Yorktown has examples of Naval jet aircraft, while the hanger deck has examples of WWII prop driven aircraft. All very, very interesting. Especially for those of us who served in a different branch of service.
Needless to say, the grass at home is screaming to be cut, as well as the hedges. There are a number of loads of laundry to be done, & a seemingly endless list of errands that need attended to. Well none of it is going to get done today as I'm taking the day off. Call it my personal recovery time. Which may even extend into tomorrow if I'm lucky. Looks like this coming weekend is going to busy so I need to rest up for a little railfanning on Saturday. Hope everyone is having a good week...

Charlie, we usually book under a different service and in fact we did, and they did NOT charge my card, though I am sure a "hold' was placed on it for the matching funds. We cancelled that one {free to do so} and changed hotels for our comfort and this one now booked through Orbitz two weeks ago, who immediately charged my card. Had I not checked something else in reference to the card, I would not have realized it, though the billing accouting for this booking did say that {only} "$1.50 due at Hotel" for some mysterious "local charge' they can't explain to me, maybe the hotel can. I missed that part and really only noticed what the total charge was for the room..thinking :"due at time of service".
Oh, and trust me you said "if you want the best rate" yuou have to "pay up front" TRUST ME< we did NOT get the "BEST RATE"! We got the "Rip OFF rate". I will wait to show my AARP card when we are checking out. they probably won't take it.
Every year we go somewhere, have booked with a varitey of services, and never have paid up front, always at the hotel at "time of use", requiring the card hat was used for the booking.
I have ALWAYS been asked for my credit card to charge it at "time of use" to be sure all charges {maybe for long distance phone call charges, etc} and other fees that were paid on the card as well. Up front they have NO IDEA what the "final charges may be", ESPECIALLY in this age of outrageous charges for "convenience food an beverages" within the room's fridge and cabinets. SHould we find that there {it doesn't say so, so i think not} we will have them remove all food and beverages so NO CHARGES will apply as we will be taking our own stuff.
I have only one card I ever use for online pruchases and out of town use, so if it gets compromised, I know where it possibly was compromised. ANd every year, bless those thieves, it DOES get compromised. Every Year. Like clock work, By Christmas I expect a call from the card company asking about mysterious charges...like 2 air plane tickets to Bangladesh? Or A Hotel room for a week in Guatemala?
MAYBE it will be different this year? Doubt it.
SO I am a very skeptical individual.
Once burned, twice burned, thrice burned, expect it again.
But not upfront charges. will stick to our regular service.
And I will NOT show/give/allow to swipe the card for duplicate charges at the scene of service either..if they want their money get it from ORbitz, they obviously have an agreement with them.
Wet, drippy rainy, cold, cludy, windy day pretty much covers it all here in Sunny Alberta. Sheesh, two nice days and here we are again. Can't seem to get the west coast from sending the wet stuff over the mountains .
Have to run MOH to get her nails done this afternoon. Rather than drive home and back again, I'll just take my book and wait for her. Nothing pressing to do anyway.
Came up with an idea for the RR the other day to open up about 8 ft of lower level trackage on one side of what was a section of the fiddle yard. I'll put a rock wall behind the main line and the siding so it looks like an open sided tunnel, put some led's in it to light it up and it will look good plus make more trackage more visable. One of the frustrations of a mountain rr is that you tend to end up with too much tunnel trackage. This idea should help resolve some of that.
So that's whats on my agenda for the rest of today after I get MOH home.
Take care all
Dennis

Afternoon folks,
Chloe, a cup of decaf for me right at the moment, please...
I've been busy getting everything ready for the Cub Den Meeting tonight. Tonight will be the last meeting as a Den they will have for a few weeks. We will have another Den Meeting using some Scouts from my old Troop leading it in later July or early August and do leader training the same night.... I think I have put together a fun meeting for the kids, and one that will help them learn some of the first requirements they need for advancement.
Galaxy, you sure seem to have a lot trouble with that there credit card thingie... I guess I have been lucky over the years. Only had a couple of problems. They were both most likely as a result of me shopping at a local big box discount store nearby. I no longer shop there and haven't had any problems since...

Hello everybody ..
We returned from California. Our flight back was rather late getting into Nashville at 1;45 am last night. . Next we drove home and arrived in our garage at 4:15. We have been sleeping most of the day.
The wedding in CA was very nice. I saw the model railroad layouts in Balboa Park Museums in San Diego for my second time. The layouts are outstanding, and I'll post more about them with pictures when I can. We did mostly family visiting, but we did take time to see the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. It's really a museum. Very interesting. Lots of stuff to see including a tour of Reagan's AF1.
Good to see there are many people who visited the Diner while I was gone.

My grandson starts kindergarten in september as well Howmus. You are so right, where the heck do the years go?
P.S. The weather guessers were right after all, the sun did come out this afternoon about 2:30. How about that!
Not much went on today. I spent much of the day in bed as I was hurting quite a bit. After the wound vac dressing was changed I watched some TV and that's about it.
Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Ulrich Great to see you are back! Glad Pertia let you keep the layout! Did the Rail spikes I sent ever get there? Far as hospital, food was petty good at the VA. Only problem was the sizes of the servings! Depressing looking at a ice cream scoop of scrabled eggs for breakfest.
Work Out Front Yep I am still at it and starting to all ready to feel a little better. By next week I hope to start adding some weight to the excises. Still taking it very easy, I know I am not 30 any longer. Need to add one more excises for shoulders and arms. Plus I need to but the bench press back toghter, cut the up right off so I could stick it under the layout.
While weight loss is notthe goal, you never know. Have cut back on yet a little more. Eating less while I am work. Only real bad habit I need to change is eating supper so late at night.
See you all later, Ken

Tom,
Enjoyed photo of the ships. The Laffey-DD 724 was built by Bath Iron Works, and is the last surviving Sumner Class of Destroyers. She replaced DD-459, also named Laffey, that was sunk in 42 at the battle of Guadalcanal.
DD-724 shelled German positions at Utah Beach and at one point grounded out broadside to the beach, and engaged all her main guns, as well as the 20 & 40 MM anti-aircraft batteries, leaving only when all the ammunition had been fired.
She moved to the Pacific, and during the battle for Okaniwa was assigned radar picket duty to give warning of Jap air attacks. During a mass Kamakazi attack she downed twenty six aircraft. In the process she was hit six times by Kamakazi aircraft, and suffered three bomb hits aft, jamming the rudder 23 degrees to port. The attack was broken up by a flight of F4U fighters, giving the crew the ability to concentrate on fire fighting.
Emergency repairs took just over a month, and she returned to the West Coast shipyards to remind the workers that Germany may have surrendered, but there was still fighting in the Pacific.
The Laffey was called the "ship that wouldn't die", and much credit was given to the construction by BIW. Sailors have long said, "Bath built is best built", and even today there is a pride within the work force that carries over to the new construction. I worked there as an inside machinist during the FFG program, and at one point there were nine FFG's tied up along the the outfitting pier as we were building them faster than the Navy could train crews to run them. The yard ended up building working engine rooms and machinery spaces and sending them by barge to Great Lakes Training Facility to give the new crews a leg up on operations.
During the war BIW was launching a destroyer every seventeen days, and sending one down the Kennebec every twenty three. During that time BIW built more tonnage than the Japanese Navy had at the start of the war. It was good to see a photo of her again.

Hey, Hey! Don't complain! For many of us here it was a LONG BAD Brutally COLD winter while YOU basked in the sunshine!
FOr some of us we never saw anything above 10F {negative something in C}, FOr others we never saw anything above 0F {way well below freezing}for streatches of weeks or months on end.
We, here, at my house, had a CONSTANT battle and lots of water/energy wasted dripping faucets so they would not freeze on us! ANd they would run for weeks at a time, day and night, because it was so cold!
Not looking forward to that again.
They blamed on el nino, well, El nina follows, and can be meaner! So this coming winter could rival last one!
Trust me Jabear, while this summer is going by so fast, we will be drinking hot cocao and sitting by the fire next Jnauary wishing it was in the temps you will be having then!

Congrats on the E-bay win!
We won't win any prizes from RAY,a retired teacher, I am sure, but:
Here, teachers in my district are crying in their coffee saying they haven't had a contract or raise in 2 years. ANd thusly they have recieved a "0%" raise! They think they deserve a RAISE every year! Automatically!! {so we often really don't feel sorry for the teachers not getting one}
It also costs about $21k/per student per year to "educate" our young people in our local school district. The room/board/tuition/book allowances and Meal plan package for the local UNIVERSITY {highly respected, multi-curricula school and adding a legal school to its 'repertoire' for lawyers, known as value university} is only a cost of $18,700 per student per year! THAT seems "wrong" when a full college costs less than to educate a high-schooler or elementary schooler?
Teachers ARE wonderfull! DOn't get me wrong!
But we are tired of the teachers crying "poverty" here.
Oh, our school district was found by the state auditors to be "hoarding money" that the state auditors said should have gone to reduce school system debt {and it was in the many millions of dollars they were hoarding}, not just a few. I understand a "prudent reserve", but not 10 of millions of dollars, unless they are going to build a new building! {they aren't}This year they passed a budget with only the slightest of increase, they would not have gotten it to pass had they INCREASED like they do every year, with that extra funds stash fiasco. That didn't help the district any this year's budget. I don't run them, just have to live with them. And the students do need educating.
Hmm i guess I a bit.
No vinnie, i am done!

Good Morning Folks!
Another ra*ny day. Good that I don´t have any business outside!
I woke up quite early this morning and started to put the walls of the engine house together. Surprisingly, all of them fitted nicely, without any major adjustments. The engine house is now a lot more than just two walls - it looks like a real building sans a roof.
I am quite pleased with the result of my first scratchbuilding attempt.
Next will be the roof structure - I might have that one up by tonight!
Herrinchoker - The USS Laffey was victim of a kamikaze attack if I remember correctly. She survived despite being badly damaged by four bombs, six kamikaze crashes, and strafing fire that killed 32 and wounded 71. I saw that on TV the other night.
Well, I am going to give Petra a helping hand before I continue w*rk on the engine house!
Have a good one!
Good morning! The hot, humid air from yesterday is giving way to somewhat better stuff here in New England, but taking it's time about it. Ran the AC all last night, and I still wasn't comfortable. Hopefully we can get by with just fans tonight.
Ulrich, good to see your pictures again. The engine house is coming along nicely.
I've got another follow-up with the doctor this afternoon. These latest meds are supposed to make me feel better, not worse, but it's hard to set up a "controlled experiment" because of other factors like pollen and heat, both of which will make me feel like home made dung, regardless of what pills I'm taking. Well, I can amuse myself with finding alternate routes to dodge the traffic to and from the doctor's office. They may not take any less time, but I'd rather be driving than sitting in a long line of cars.
Good morning. It's 71° with 100% humidity. The high will be 85° and there's a significant chance of showers and thunderstorms.Excuse me if I'm not very talkative today. Looks like it's gonna be wet here. I'm not going to be doing much. My right knee feels OK this morning but my neck and back are letting me know they don't like the weather. Looks like another bed day for me.
Afternoon, Folks!
Flo, coffee - lots of it, and a slicce of that chocolate cake, please.
Made a quantum leap with building the engine house today. Not only are all the walls up, but the roof structure is taking shape as well.
This is the state when I left for lunch:
After a 30 minute nap, I build the smokestack and steam vents. Now, the engine house is getting where I want it to be:
That´s enough for the day, I will now try to get some rest, maybe I´ll watch an old movie on the tube.
Jeff - take care!
CUL!
Sir Madog
Ulrich! GREAT JOB!
Lookin' fine!
Looks great!
LOVE the color! That was the right choice!
Galaxy - thanks for the kudos! Guess who is one happy scratchbuilder?
The engine house will get some light weathering, using the powdered pigments I have. The red will see a little fading, and the bottom part will get some green and brown to resemble decaying wood.
It sure has paid off to do sub-assemblies.
WEll
We did a lot of stuff for packing last night. We are going the Celtic Festival at teh Renaissance Farie at the winery in Lancaster, PA.
FIL will be sure to look after the house several times a day {= he is being snoopy and nosey}, so the cat will be looked after, who will do just fine without us for a few days.
Picked up a 5 cupper at Wally WOrld, runing a vinegar rinse through it now. They may well provide coffee at the breakfast "buffet" but it is usually lame, and late {6 am} for us you know i am up EARLY! ANd IF they provide one in the room, well lets just say we have seen more than one show where what they do is use the SAME cloth to: clean the tub, toilet, sink and the ice bucket and coffee maker and glass glasses if they are provided!
I also take along a bunch of baggies and ziplocks as the dirtiest thing in a hotel room??? The TV remote control! {by scientific testing} so we dump it into a ziplock bag, and all good hotel chains provide baggies for the ice bucket. Second dirtiest thing? The telephone! we expect not to use it! But just in case I have baggies and zioppers and a small box of trash bags for wet stuff for instance.
Usually we are good at packing for the right amount but I think we both are taking too much this time,b ut with Monday off form work, we my just dilly-dally another day on sunday somewhere.
Tonight gotta "charge up" the electric cooler and let it run/cool down. Then load it up tomorrow morning! Well take things like ham. cheese, bread, mayo, mustard, breakfast sandwhiches, etc to have along for the ride. Extras as we are budgeted to eat out and I prefer that, but this is just in case, and our firned has limited fundage to go so he has the options, plus we have "snacks".
I know one place we will be sure to eat at is RED ROBBIN burgers!!! They are DELICIOUS! and right cross the street form the hotel. They have built u\p quite a bit on the Linclon Hiway in Lancaster, PA. Google earth doesn't show the whole thing and has inserted still photos here and there to reflect the new built-ups, they have yet to do a "new travel the route" video. There is also an Applebee's next door to the hotel, and we enjoy their food too. DOwn the road is Friendly's or Perkin's for breaking fast, IF we need it!.
Since we WILL be there, we WILL drop by Strasburg RR and the RR museum of PA too. I WILL have to keep my hands tied and my Credit card in my wallet, though, as they have a fabulous LHS on the grounds at Strasburg, and one down the road too!!!!!!! We can watch them shuffel the steamers for free. May take some pics again. I know share them,,well maybe!
well, I have to see the psychiatrist today! he will hopefully start me on a new anit-manic med to keep down treh manic symptons I have been having of late!
So, I'd best get my butt off her nad moving! Lots more to do afore tomorrow!
