Morning Diners, pretty quiet in here. I just put out about 20 items at the curb for the semi annual "Kick it to the Curb" weekend. Everything from electric snowblower to electric space heater. Some of it is new.
Most of the stuff is from the tons of stuff I ended up with when my Mom passed away a few years ago. Everything is FREE FREE so hopefully it will all find a good home.
Anything that doesn't go will be going to the Good Will or the dump.
Tired of it all taking up room I don't have.
Have a good one this weekend

Good morning. It's 75° with 92% humidity.The high will be 92° with some clouds.Just waiting on the Home Health nurse to call. The schedule is normally Mon, Wed, Fri. Due to the dressing applied Wednesday going and having to be redone Thursday that put the next on Saturday, today. In a way that's good as it the Mon, Wed, Fri back into effect due to the weekend.I'll watch more movies, maybe work on a loco or two any play some ancient computer games.Other than that I have no plans for today.
MisterBeasley Galaxy, do you want to save some money? (And who doesn't?) If you never use that DVR, call the cable company and have them take it back. You are probably paying a monthly fee for it, and it may be on top of your "package" price. Also, you don't really need both the land line and the cable line telephones. The cable one is part of the package, but the other one doesn't do you much good and again, you're paying a monthly bill for it. If the phone wasn't bundled with my cable, I would drop the land line completely and live with just the cell phones.

Mr. B.: {PS: I swear I am not being difficult!}
I woudl Love to save money:
Here are the things wrong with what you said:
1} without the darn DVR box, we WON'T get the channels we are entitled to as part of our "package", though if we didn't have it within a 'package" we'd be paying $10/m for it. They MAY have a non-DVR box, but it is part of the package and they don't give ala carte discounts except for the modem costs, if you provide your own, but to be sure, we will check into it... we could never learn how to set it to record and it's previous owner had it set to record one thing it did that well-4 times a day, everyday, until it got filled up. the de-structions {what i call IN structions} showed how to program, but it was a different box they showed how to do it.**
2}MOH will NOT give up the landline. WHY? because as stated earlier, we have phone hwne the power goes out, while everyoen else reliant on computer phones or cells run out of power sooner than later and WE STILL HAVE A HARDWIRED PHONE WORKING! Besides then we have to alert everyone sooner than later we changed...{although I think we can have the # transferred to the cable phone}
{ps remember MOh started all this wanting and SOMEWHAT needing a "smart phone" for work"}
3}I refuse to give up a "landline/cable line" myself..why? because they{cell phones} may be better where you are in Boston, but here not as CLEAR a communication device as 'landline that are hard wired" when talking to someone.ALso, the cells may not ring here where we are and we have to go hunting for a singal {usually outside} as it is...we live in a county where there are more cows than people {and SOME city folks still don't know what a cow is, belive it or not, or that the beef they eat comes from one}.
I grew up with the idea if we went home at the wrong time, we had to wiat for the *COWS* to cross the road to get to the barn at milking time.
A few year s ago..i had a friend in the pick-em-up truck i had then, and i was looking at him while we went down a dirt road. suddlenly he said 'cow", I said I know about the cows..he again said "COW". I looked forward and there, in the road was a loose cow standing there in front of me, i almost hit it head on, and let me tell you, it would have left a bigger dent than a deer would have!!! The cow just turned and looked into the truck and STOOD THere...he got out and pushed ti on its way..{he also worked on a farm and often pushed cows around to get them where they wanted them, though NO ONE HERE in their right mind goes "cow tipping"!!!
So, I think we may be stuck renting the cable's box and modem, though I would LOVE to save money!
** we are not people to whom these fancy smancy things are friendly to! We had so much trouble geting the new flat screen tv to work! That however, is because the de-struciton book for IT, has several errors, i found what we needed by ACCIDENT one day and it is the WRONG button according to the destructions to use for changing the "input sourc", for instance! The remote for IT doesn't match the remote that came with it....
I MAY be able to convince MOH that we should give up land line adn go to the cable phone wihtout # on it, but not sure..like i said we have phones when the power goes out{due to flooding or storms, that happens A LOT here lately!} and dead cell towers mean no power for those with cell phones too!
oh, the agony of options!

Good Morning!
What a lovely day it is! Lots of sunshine - no clouds in sight, temperatures will go up to 26°C. That´s warm enough for me!
I´ll take a break from w*rking on the layout. Fiddling, tinkering and tweaking have brought it to a stage, where it can be smoothly operated (well, almost). Soome of the issues I stall battle will go away, when I install the switch stands. There is still some ballasting to do, but that will follow later.
So it´s back to paer modeling. I have, again, revisited the drawing of the engine house, as I found it to tall, somehow out of proportion. I quick web search confirmed that. So I lowered the roof a little, making it look better. Of course, this made me rework the entire set of construction drawings. Aside from filling in some of the dimensions, I am pretty much done with that job now.
What color would the outside be? I want it to look like having been gone three of 3 decades of "careful neglect" with most of the color faded away. How about barn red?
Special thoughts for Johnboy, Flip, Barry, Jeff and all others battling health issues!
Have a great weekend!

House Front Spoke with my Lawyer today and most of it made my head hurt! While there is nothing hidden in the loan and it is all correct the amount is wrong. VA HEMP guide line shows the loan payment should be $746.00 a month and not the $843.57 BoS has it at. Before we apeal the offer she needs to do a little more research.
Saturday Is Sparkie Day. Taking Sparkie the Rocket Dog to a American Eskimo Reunion Luch at St Louis Dog Mesume. (spell check) While I do want to go, sort of don't. Rather spend a free Saturday working on the house. But, heck it is for a good cause, Amercian Eskimo Resue. Was not for them, we would not have Sparkie!
See you all Saturday!

Good evening. It's a warm 84° outside and with the humidity at 76% a bit sticky too. Got a little work done on a loco today. Just a general cleaning. This morning I accidentally erased the startup disk for my //e. I have others but not with the greeting program this one had. Fortunately I had copied the disk to an SD card after I wrote the program. So all I had to do was put the card in the reader, select the proper directory and copy it contents to a disk and Viola, a new startup disk.Other than that I watched a couple of movies. I have one on now. It's a cheesy super spy rip-off with Steve Martin as agent WD40. So far it's been one bad joke after another and I'm thinking about just stopping it and delete it.That's about it so it's time to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

tcwright973 Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. I'm talking about what I see on my screen. Every post that contains a photo, including yours, does not contain a "Reply - Quick Reply" selection. They appear only on posts without photos. So it is happening.

I see the "reply" and "quick reply" buttons on EVERY photo-included post here. I can use those buttons too.
so as Jeffrey alluded to, maybe it is your system, or connection company?
I also have win 7 so that may not be the issue?
Frustrating when things don't work easily the way they are supposed to, isn't it?
V8Vega Do TV cable companies have phones too?
Do TV cable companies have phones too?
Wellm, yes. See We have a cable tv box {a dvr we never did know how to record on} for the TV, and a modem for the computer that also has a phone jack in it for the cable company's phone system, sent over their cable lines to other stations as needed for connecting with another phone {a cell tower, a landline switching station, or radio phone}.
We have 3 types of phones here:
1} good old fashioned hardwired landline with a ling distance service that charges for any LD calls we make, even those within our area code that are more than about 30 miles from us. If the power goes out, it still works WITH a hardwired phone {NOT a "cordless" phone}
2} cable phone allows us to call "free" anywhere in USA and some 20 -something other countries for "free"...it is also "hard wired', but if the power goes out it won't work as the modem requires electricity to operate. It is "included" in our package, but woudl cost $39.95/m ala carte.
3} and 2 "smart phones' Cell phones..that supposedly allow us to call unlimitedly across the USA "free" too, that are take anywhere mobile in nature, BUT can also be "dead' if the power goes out as the cell towers may not have power either! and once the battery is dead, you have to recharge somehow.
{That part we understand..but the cable co. comes and will hook all up to be sure is running well, IF we goof it up!}

Hi Guys
Warm out today. Was able to cut a few family members lawns today. Aside from that I ordered a few bike tools that I need. I was going to go out for a ride this morning but didnt get up in time ( I like going around 5am until 7:30am ). Might sit outside on the back porch for a bit and flip through the latest Model Railroader or play a game of strat baseball.

MisterBeasley My cable company (Comcast) will let me buy my own cable modem if I want, and save the monthly rental fee. I don't know if I can buy one that comes with a phone system as well. But, at this point I would recommend sticking with the one the cable company provides. First of all, buying my own would have been expensive, and there's no guarantee it will continue to work if the cable company "upgrades" something. Second, I've had to have them out several times to replace defective cable modems, which costs me nothing to end up with a new one. The cable modem is the part of the system that hooks up directly to the wire from the street, so it's going to be susceptible to surges and even nearby lightning strikes. The router, on the other hand, is a step removed from the street. I'm on my third router now, but all have been upgrades, and the old ones remain serviceable if necessary.

That was my thought when I put in the present system. The cost of the Modem is bigger than the router, and they have come and upgraded mine on occasion when there was a problem. It probably would be about the same $$$ cost either way. But......
It is a lot less expensive to just buy the WiFi router and connect it in line.
BTW, one of the cords that goes to my Switch (Router like thingy, but not actually a router) is the feed from the box monitoring the Solar Panels. My Modem, Router and WiFi are running 24/7 because of that... My system consists of Modem — Switch — Airport Express — Computer. Several lines spread out from the Switch to other computers and the Solar equipment.

We are forced by our infinitely wise and benevolent IT department at work to use Internet Explorer 8, the great-grandfather of today's IE 11. I have similar issues as you. So, I keep a copy of Firefox (shhhhhhh!) to use on sites that break down using old browsers.
galaxyThanks, RAY, but Mr. B. has it right, to keep the cable phone we have to keep the stoopid cable company's modem AS WELL. WHich, I thought i WAS saying somewhere along the way...is that I CANNOT BUY a wireless modem WITH the cable company's phone jack in it! WE HAVE the cable's company's phone, and want to keep it. we have to get the wifi in addition to the cable modem...
True... But you can buy your own Telephony type Cable Modem. You do need to get a seperate WiFi Router though. They are two separate items. You can get a Modem/router with WiFi without the phone connection. I thought part of your question was how to hook up the whole system, and that you thought you needed to use the phone wiring (RJ12) as part of it. Guess I misunderstood part of your statement.

MisterBeasley You have to keep the cable company's modem. It has 2 output jacks in the back. One is for the phone, and the other goes to your computer now. The wireless router goes between the cable modem and the computer, and the telephone line stays where it is. The wireless router doesn't do land-line phones. If you have "smart phones," though, you will be able to use that WiFi for those. That way, you're not burning your monthly data allotment while you're at home.

The conversation earlier that made me so frustrated, WAS about the phones...the smart phones, and the account, and the passwords/numbers.
I haven't been to Best buy yet either to see in person...that way i can taste it too,
On a side note: The vest I got to go with the KILT is to small. I wear a 2X to a 4X depending on what/how cut, and I ordered a 3x, and need a 4x. I will return it tomorrow in the mail, they are sending out the replacement today, without yet having received the wrong one back. Good customer service! Fast delivery!

I've been watching the conversations about a wi-fi router. To those of us who have it, & couldn't be without it, it seems simple enough; the cable from your local provider into the back of the modem, then a cable from the modem to the wi-fi router. That's it. But I can see how it can be confusing, if not down right intimidating. It's great being able to take my laptop or IPhone anywhere in the house & connect to the internet. Speaking of phones, I'm learning a little more each day about the capabilities of my IPhone. What's surprised me the most is how productive & convenient it can be. There's still a workshop on the ICloud I want to take, but I just couldn't fit it in our schedule this week.
We had some errands to run yesterday, which is not all that unusual in our house for some reason. Anyway, at one point we had the opportunity to railfan the CSX Pittsburgh Sub West. Worked out well as we caught 3 trains in an hour.
I usually see something new, at least to me, every time we go out. Yesterday, one of the trains was a denatured alcohol powered by 3 Canadian Pacific locomotives. The lead engine turned out to ba a model I never heard of before. An SD30C-ECO. I had to look that up on the internet to find out what it was. Part of the fun for me. Anyway, I did it all on site with the IPhone.
So I'm sitting there with my scanner listening to dispatchers, detectors, & train crews, my new digital camera that doesn't use film, & my IPhone looking things up on the internet. Nothing new for the kids today, but for someone my age, it's the science fiction of my youth. Although I still miss the ice man coming around in his horse & wagon.
A beautiful 68 degrees & slightly overcast at times here today. The weekend looks great for the most part, & that's a good thing as we plan on hitting the tracks for a couple of hours both Saturday & Sunday. Everyone have a terrific weekend & stay safe...
....... OK, Galaxy, I'll put on my Geek hat and try to explain without a whole lot of technical whys and wherefores what you need to do!
The only other thing you will need besides the WiFi Router box thingie that you posted a link to earlier is a short Cat5e Ethernet Cable. (click on link to show you a whole bunch of them.)
Now forget the word Telephone for this entire discussion as this has absolutely nothing to do with your telephone. That hand held thingie you want to connect is NOT a telephone, it is a computer (that you can also talk on if you desire)! OK? So forget about the telephone cable because you are NOT connecting a telephone, you are connecting a computer WiFi device.
Open up the link you gave us earlier to the Netgear Router. Got it? OK, now click on the lower photo to show the back of the router. You will see from the bottom up, the plug for the wall wart/line lump that powers the router. Right above that is a yellow ethernet jack. That is where one end of the ethernet cable from the Modem goes. Above the yellow box there are 3 (maybe 4) more ethernet jacks. Those can be used to hardwire computers. The end of the Ethernet Cable from the back of your computer (that used to plug into the router) gets plugged in to one of the ethernet jacks (black) in the back of the WiFi router. You are now ready to configure the router for your home. That's it... That is all you have to do to hook it up! Nothing more to do to hook it up. Just put the WiFi router inline between your Modem and your computer. Done! You need one more Cat5e Ethernet cable..........
OK?
[edit] the Cat5e (or Cat6) cable will be one as shown on the link that has rj45 ends. That is what is used for ethernet. Any of those cables on that page will work for you. If you want to place the Router next to your Modem even a 1 foot long cord would be fine. You can get the cables at the same store you buy the Router. Even Mall Wart, Staples, and Radidio Shark has them. Not hard, my friend, not hard at all.
Afternoon Gang!
Tinkering and tweaking continues and there are signs of improvement. While running a loco down the track, I found out that some extra noise is coming from little grains of ballast stuck in the frogs, the guard rails or adhering to the web of the rail. I am playing Sherlock Holmes to find out these spots and remove those grains. Noise is a general problem with the layout. I have not installed a cork roadbed for two reasons, number 1 being the fact, that narrow guage lines usually did not have high ballast beds, number 2 being the fact, that, with the glue we have available here, the cork gets hard and loses the sound deadenig properties. I have made that experience a number of times with previous layouts. I still want to battle the noise and this is my idea:
If I mount two or three 1" thick pieces of MDF underneath the roadbed in each section (there are four to each segment), this should change the resonance frequency sufficient to dampen the noise a little. Will this work?
No, what i was saying is the..ohnever mind. I will have geek squad help i guesss.
Took me since last posting{7:30 AM} to now {10:00} to find out from Verizon that we DON'T NEED Long Distance on the new cells, and the "select long distance plan" message MOH got was in error, UNLESS we go out of the country. WE THOUGHT we had LD within the USA, which we do,,,unlimitedly.
Every time those folks want a password, they have me change it, because the pass {word} or pass {number} i give them is NOT the one they want! ANd they are NOT the ONES we SET THE ACCOUNT UP WITH! THAT/THOSE shoud be the pass{words} pass {numbers} they should be wanting! Then if I give them the ones they had me just change to,they claim that is still not the pass{word} pass{number} they want now either!
Only time a passsword is valid is when the message me one on the smart phone for temp usage! We have passwords, secret questions, special questions, passnumbers out of you know where! we have had a total of 24 now!!!.
and I guarantee you when i try to use what I just changed to today on tomorrow, it WILL NOT WORK again! hasn't worked that way form one day to another since we got the things!
GRRR.
i have to go to the facilities and then the CU, and then fight some more with a couple of returns i have to do.
headache is seting in, wonder WHY?
Good morning. It's 75° with 96% humidity. The high will be 92°.I have no plans for today so I'll take or duck whatever comes along. The bulk of the day will likely be spent playing ancient computer games on the //e and watching movies.The report on my lab work came back. Everything's fine.As is usual for this time of year my eyes are giving me some minor problems with itching and watering. Part of my allergies. I try to get any eye exams and anything requiring a vision test done before this flares up. It's irritating so I have to avoid bright light whenever possible. What did I do to deserve all these problems.
Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I'll have the #2 special this morning, eggs over easy, sausage links, homefries, and a double order of Sour Dough Toast with real butter and a large pot of Seneca Lake Blend Dark Roast coffee in the R&GV RR mug to start the day.
"It's a Beautiful day in the neighborhood....." OK who is singing THAT!?! Did you know that Mr. Rogers was a Presbyterian Minister? Many years ago the Senior Class at Hobart and William Smith Colleges here in town had a group of "wise guys" who decided to vote for Mr. Rogers to be the keynote speaker at their graduation. Turns out the little group turned out to be the majority of the class. So... Mr. Rogers of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood came to Geneva and addressed the graduates. Many Professors later said he was the best speaker they had ever had there! He got something like a 10 minute standing ovation! Not at all like he appeared on the show...
Galaxy, it's not a "Phone Plug". Those are only used for sound connections for instruments these days... You will be using an Ethernet cable. The exact same cord that plugs into the back of your computer and goes to the Modem. The The wireless Router can be daisy chained between the Modem and the Computer. The telephone cord is an RJ-12 I think. Your phone is most likey plugged into an RJ-12 jack that is in the back of the Modem. My modem from TWC is a Webstar. Yours should be similar. Again the wireless will use the same type of cable that goes to the Ethernet jack in the back of your computer. That is not the same as the phone uses.... The wireless doesn't have anything to do with your plugged in phone. [edit] What Mr. Beasley said!!!
Sun is starting to peek out from behind the clouds. Should be sunny most of the day. Currently 59°F here in the Finger Lakes with a predicted high of 73° this afternoon. Finished the garden yesterday, and today need to mow the lawn and do some weeding. Housecleaning is on the list but the wash has priority. Tomorrow I will be on a trip to Arcade, NY to ride the Arcade and Attica RR. They will have their old Connie under steam for us! The museum is raffling off two cab rides in the loco and a few peopl will also get to climb up and blow the steam whistle.... After the trip we will have a Prime Rib dinner at a restaurant in the area before boarding the bus to return to the Industry Museum. Should be a fun day!
Catch you all later!
