Had a somewhat busy day. No progress on Oliver's adventure. Didn't even turn the //e on. We had lunch in town today at Domino's pizza. I had a small pizza. Put a large ham in the oven a little before noon. It was ready about 5:30-6. That's going to be the sandwich meat supply for a while. We went into town tonight to look at the Christmas light displays people have set up. It's pretty sparse this year.

That's it for tonight. See y'all tomorrow.

Egg Nog, please. Heavy on the nog! ... CLice of mince pie, too, please.

Merry Christmas everybody. I may not be on the computer for a while. Michigan family is leaving here in Kentucky for their home in the morning, and we leave in the morning to see family in Alabama.  Should see more family in Tennessee on our way back. It'll be a short trip because Ohio family will be here over the weekend.

Barry ... Great to see you! ... Please do not stay away. Hope your music is going well.... Hey ! Where is the mince pie?

Ray .... I like the Jolly Old Elf photos. Where are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen ?

JohnBoy ... Praying you will be cured and have a full recovery.

Ulrich ... It will be neat if that little engine becomes a production model.

Cheers !

Good Evening Everyone,

First off, I want to wish Johnboy the best of luck with the treatments and I sure hope it is successful. Please keep us posted on your progress.

As Johnboy said it was another cold day here. Not quite as cold as he had it but still much below normal for this time of year. We went out anyway as we had lunch with a friend of my wife and her husband who were in town from Edmonton visiting family. I then got my wife to go to a jewellery store and I got her something for Christmas. Nothing like shiny things!

Well soon we are going to watch one of our favouite movies, Little Shop Around the Corner. We sure are going through a lot of Keurig coffee especially the Butterscotch flavoured one.

On the RR front I finally finished the Middlesex Manufacturing Building and have been doing some running on the N scale. I want to be sure everything is running fine before I start ballasting.

Keep warm,

CN Charlie

I went to HD today to buy the lumber for my benchwork experiment--a small tabletop layout (2'4"x4') with short, little legs.  My goal is to learn how build up benchwork on something small before going full-scale.  (Kind of like on Mythbusters.)  The last time I did anything that even resembled carpentry was in ninth-grade shop class, and that was a long, long time ago.  My goal is to complete the benchwork during the holidays.  Wish me luck.

Afternoon folks.....  Hey!  Is THAT Barry???  Howdy Barry!  Merry Christmas to yah!  I had begun to think you didn't like us anymore or sumpin'.  Good to hear you are doing well with album.

Just thought I would share a couple of RR photos from last Saturday.  The "North Pole"  where "you know who" lives:

Old Santa greets the "Boys and Girls" in the rain who traveled all the way to the "North Pole" to see him:

He gives every Girl and Boy a candy cane and a promise to visit on Christmas Eve!

I can tell you the "Jolly Old Elf" enjoyed it even though it was raining and cold!

Sir Madog

Galaxy - that´s a cute little house! I certainly can picture myself living in something like it! All I need in addition would be some place to put up a little workshop, - my layout will adorn a wall, just like a picture!

Well, YOU could have the whole rear BR for your trains! When your son visits he can go up the loft to the air mattress bed to sleep! You'd have the front BR for you and Petra.

If you look at the right side margin, 4th "block" down, is more plans, but the bigger they are, the more they cost and MOH and I really don't want a 2 story. The "Harbinger" is about the same as the one I showed you!

http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/products/b53/#ad-image-8

would be my next favorite! BUT it is a 2-story and a loss for us. we ahve been spoiled with only 3 steps to get into our "house" and all on one level We'd like a basement of course, {for trains}, but I think a small Z scale layout would do me fine in an under-bed container. ANd the single story concept of the Whidbey is great!

When we build it, Ulrich, you and Pertra can be our first guests!!!

Mornin'..... er.... uh....  Ahem!  Afternoon folks!

Zoe, I'll have  a short stack of buckwheat pancakes, NYS Maple Syrup, bacon, and lots of dark rost coffee in my R&GV RR Mug please.

I went out early this morning and got my hair cut.  Actually I had them all cut.  A member of my church who is an insurance guy stopped by the barber shop (in the same plaza) with some paperwork for the barber, and told me he was wondering when I was going to get it cut and that I was looking a bit ragged at church yesterday.  I told him I didn't get it cut until after I did my imitation of the Patron Saint of Mal Wart...  Then I stopped at the Vets on the way home (right across the street) to pick up more pill pockets and the Rx food for the kitties.  I will be going to the grocery store and a couple other places this afternoon to finish up last minute shopping for Christmas after lunch.

Jeremy, looks like you guys North of Lake Ontario got nailed real good by the storm!  Hope you and yours stay safe and they can clean up and get things working up there ASAP.  I'll keep all our frinds up in that area in my prayers for now!

Forget who it was but actually -30+° (F or C) is kindof fun to be out in as long as the wind is not kicking up hard.  I have been out camping in that sort of cold.  You know when it is that cold by the "Crunch" when walking on the snow! Smile, Wink & Grin

Catch you all later.

Hi Guys.

Was suppose to go for bloodwork today but had to wait for the docotrs office to fax it over. I tried calling and calling but it looks like that ice storm may have knocked out power to them also. I will call again tomorrow and just reschedule the work. Alot of damage last night by falling trees. Some people may not have power back before christmas in some parts around here.

I have been working on the layout today and am doing some coal loads at the moment. When the wife gets home we have some cookies that we need to get going on.

Wow, that is cold.  The Google metric conversion app says -27F with a wind chill of -56F.  It is hard (impossible) for this Arizonan to even imagine how cold that is.  Stay warm, and more importantly, get/stay healthy.

Well

Cooler today so far adn erm "drizzly" there is still some rain hainging around.

Looking at "tiny houses" from Tumbleweed. the Whidbey with 2 brs and a loft all in a mere 557sqft model. If you can stand a "great room" with a dining table in it of 15'x9' it'll do. I'd expand the one BR to 8 feet out at least. I'd epand the great room to at least another 4 foot wide to make it  15x13. I'd take out the loft over the Gr Room. {just over bath/kit nad over front BR is enough}.  The front room I'd have the E windows and the W windows by the door walled out so only fornt windows remain, the front door moved to just 4" of trim away from the exterior BR wall to put in a full closet where they have shelves next to the open front door. They say the materials SHOULD cost about $41,500 in nearly any reagion. Ahem. The labor is where they get you. And on a concrete slab.

Here is the plans page {don't count on the link to work}:

http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/products/whidbey/#ad-image-12

So I don't know. If we get a small in-town lot {ther are a few cheapies now} it may work. also a NICE out of town lot too for a mere $7,900 might work IF we have the extra money to build the nifty little thing. I'd want a foundation at least under the main house. That'll cost more of course! full foundation? yeah about $8-10K more. Lvel lot and some digging/backfil..maybe we could get it for $8K.

SO don't know. Cute little "cottage" I'd go for the enclosed KIT model as MOH doesn't like the "open kitchen" and "mess that goes with the kit while cooking" to be "seen" by the guests or visitors {like we have a lot}.

we will see, maybe in 2-3 years? More like 5-10!

interesting.

have a great mid-day early-afternoon!

Good morning. It's 34° with 91% humidity. The high will be 48°.

Nothing in particular planned for today. I'll probably just watch some movies. I'm giving my back and right thigh a break as their aching from the workout they got yesterday.

Whistling   There is no Icon for cold,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.,.

Morning all,

Just a short stop as some have been asking how cold it is up here,

Well we are just getting ready to go to the hospital and the outside temp here is -33 C and with the wind chill it is -49 C

and those temps that low are very similar to Farenheit.   God bless us all.   Not sure why we stay here except at this time of year we

have no problems with flys or mosquitos.

Have a great day all.

Good Afternoon Folks!

The day before Christmas Eve (which is the BIG day here in Germany)! Worked down my HD list, went to my doc appointment and now we are all set for Christmas to come. I have to wait for the results until after Christmas, so Friday will bring truth or consequences...

What have I started? I published the drawing of my little critter in a german forum specialized on light railways. The feedback was tremendous. There is a fair chance we can team up and organize the production of a small series of this loco. I must have hit the nail with this design Yeah

So, here is the final version of it:

Johnboy - good to see you here! The prayer candle remains lit!

Make it a great day!

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and an order of Biscuits and Gravy with a couple eggs scrambled loose thrown on top please. Thanks.

Cold.

Welp, I do believe Brenda is done. I got to use my yearly comment, “what do the parents do for their children on Christmas? Wake them up?” She reported un-thinkingly, how much she spent just on stocking stuff alone…more than I spent on Christmas dinner which will consist of prime rib roast and snow crab legs plus the potato etc, etc Indifferent. Then the pile of gifts for which she gave no hint of the cost. Like I said, what do the parents do for them? Bring them here. THAT's what they do. (shakes head)

Christmas will be spent on the eve this year due to scheduling conflicts with other sides of families, so to make sure they get every last gift ASAP, we will change our normal “traditions”. Something that was always frowned on for me because of w*rk or things that caused me to miss Christmas eve with her family. A "tradition".  Good news is, the Christmas dinner will be had by just me and Brenda.Confused Brenda and IHuh?. Christmas eve will be just snacky foods called Hors-dee-orves by many in the French speaking community such as myself. Bad news is, these “quick and simple” tidbits have now eclipsed the price of the prime rib dinnerIndifferent.(that by the way, I was allowed to purchase prior to me being told of the known by her schedule changeGrumpy). Which reminds me, I must go to the famous warehouse club today to get the crab legs. After all my comments about the prices there, turns out the crab legs were the cheapest in townWhistling. Hmm I do believe Brenda mentioned that tooLaugh. Right before she said while I was out there to pick up a couple other things for the “quick and easy” feeding.Surprise Bang Head Dead

Would have cost half as much if I said “OK all you strap hangers…load up and we’re headin to the Chinese Buffet. Let the girls deal with your mess”. Shoot, I could pay for us all and give her a $50 TIP and be money ahead.Bang Head

Also found another spot in the socket of my leg that's giving me a bit of discomfort. Remember the little bump that was filed off? Well the ridge that bump was on was the culprit this time time around. I put a sanding drum on the Dremel and carefully ground the ridge until it was smooth then put the leg back on. Much better! But man, carbon fiber and Kevlar makes a dusty mess!

Jeff, if you keep that up, you will be the replacement for Duck Dynasty.  Power Tools in the Swamp!

Turns out, my TV cable box just needed to be power cycled and it came back to life.  Glad I didn't have to call Tech Support, or they would have had me ship the box back to them in Mumbai, at my expense.

Jeff: I laughed hard at the story about the ladies connecting the new washer! I would have paid admission to see Morgan get soaked. That had to be a screamer!

It certainly was on her part. Everybody else (my sister, stepmother and myself had a good laugh about it. She found that if the controls are set for cold water only it will block off the hot water inlet very well.

*

The new washer and dryer were successfully installed and have handled three loads of laundry so far. The laundry room floor is still dry at this time.

It's 36° now, humidity 94%, it's supposed to get down to 32° by morning. At least it's not raining.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

John-Boy, good to hear from you.  You're right, it's no joke, but the doctors are getting better at this all the time.  A friend of mine had "shaped" radiation treatment for prostate cancer.  He kept up his good spirits despite the treatment, and even reported on it at lunchtime when he returned to work.

Well, our ski trip turned out to be less than perfect.  Easy trip up, and a nice dinner at the Korean-Japanese place in town.  Hot Stone Bibimbop is a dish I must have every ski season.  I got out first, as the ladies slept in.  We had a free pass for daughter Annie, who is no longer a college student eligible for that huge discount.  But, she forgot and left the passes home.  But, I asked "Do they have numbers on them?" and she got her roommate to take a picture and send it in.  The ticket office was happy with this wonder of technology, so she got out on the mountain before lunch, along with wife Penny.  We skied a few runs, and then I went in for lunch, being the only one on a normal schedule.  I went out afterwards to light rain, but skied until the end of the day.  Sunday was a total bust, with miserable freezing rain, and all but one low-down lift shut down.  Fortunately, the drive back was nowhere near as bad as predicted.

Right now, though, it looks like my cable TV box has died.  Bah.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Howdy ...

Wow! .. That is a really big storm affecting lots of people!

Kinda busy with family visiting. Last night was an adventure. We lost power at about 6:00 pm. One of our neighbors had a "black out party" because they had a power generator. We walked in very heavy rain in a tornado watch to their house. Other neighbors were there too. Regular power came back on and we all went home.

I took grandkids to Gus's house and just got back. He ran trains for the grandkids, and this was a near disaster. He has a gate with track going across the top for the main line. He has an electrical circuit to kill power while the gate is open. He installed that after an E9 ran off the layout and onto the floor at that location a couple of years ago.  ...... For the first time the circuit failed to stop a train this afternoon while we were there. He had a gate open, and a train did not stop.  It was a passenger train with three E-units pulling it. .... Fortunately I saw it happening and was close enough to leap over to the open gate. The first E-unit (an E7A) was already off the layout, and I caught it in mid air. The second unit (an E7B) was running off the layout next, and I caught it with my other hand. I placed the B-unit under the arm with A unit in hand, and was able to catch the third unit (an E8B) ... Close call. No damage. .... Gus is now repairing his circuit. ... I may join the circus and juggle E-units to entertain people.

JohnBoy ... Thanks for the update. Prayers continue. ....

Jeff, I'm glad to see that leg taking shape for you, pretty soon you'll be out with the Ladies two-stepping.

I never did that before. Why would I want to do it now? Good to see you Johnboy.

*

Well the new washer and dryer came today. Watching my sister and my niece unload them was better than watching the Marx Brothers at the circus! I even applauded once they had both units on the ground. They were being real careful getting them into the house. With a price tag of around two grand they certainly didn't want to damage them. Now that the new units were cluttering up the living room it was time to move the old units out which only took fifteen minutes. Then came time to start hooking up the new ones. When they took out the old washer they took out all the hoses and connectors with it. I told them they were gonna need the 'Y' connector that allowed one wall tap to connect to both the cold and hot water connections on the washer. "No we don't, there's two faucets on the wall". Turn the hot one on I said. My sister turns it on. Nothing! Surprise, surprise. "Oh well, we can connect one hose to the cold water connector and just leave the hot one as it is (unblocked)". I told them to have a bucket ready when they test the washer. "No water will come out. It's blocked from the inside. Water can go in but it can't come out". Uh-huh, you go on thinking that. My niece was behind the machine when my sister turned it on and almost instantly I hear these screams of "turn it off, turn it off!". She was soaked from the waist down. All I said was I told you so.

Got a little work done on Oliver's adventure. He's inside the baggage car at least. Hasn't seen anything yet though.

Got in a lot of walking practice and going up and down low steps.

Johnboy-out,

GOOD TO SEE YOU SIR!

I will keep a prayer candle going for you as your battle rages on.

Fight the good fight and don't let it win!

Prayers for Others, such as Ulrich and JeremyB are also in the works, as well as a general one for those others in need, but whom haven't come foreward.

Angel

Whistling

Gd' Day Gang,

Thought I should stop by and give you an update on the medical goings on with this old Phart.Blindfold

Chloe, when you get a moment, I'll have a Double Denver with the crusts cut off, and an RBF for a late lunch.

Well, I have two more appointments after about the two dozen I have had so far, and they will be tomorrow and Tuesday.  I will see the radiation Doctor on Monday as well as another blood test. That will be four of them. and on Tues. I will be fitted fot a radiation mask to protect the parts of my head that they don't want to hit with the force.  That will mainly be my eyes as they want to get the throat, back of my tongue and the lymph nodes on the sides of my neck.  They say it is the second most aggresive cancer that there is, so I say lets get at it, it has taken too long to get to this point.  Really hoping and praying I don't lose my tongue and vocal chords.  I don't want to even think about that.   Am I scared ?   You bet I am.... But I am trying to stay focused positively and will try to keep my eye on that wee small light at the end of this tunnel that hopefully I will emerge from in three to four months.

On a lighter note,  I started to build the highway that is along the front edge of the north section of the LM&E.  This will be somewhat like Terry's in Wisconcin where the road isn't always the full width but narrows in several places. I didn't want it level either so I built it up with some foam pieces then to make the transitions I used a piece of this wall panelling and by screwing it down at both ends it took on the transition really good and made it solid enough to support the road surface. This I made out of a strip of rolled roofing I had left over from roofing a shed two years ago. Putting it on upside down, the back side of it really made a good looking asphalt surface.  Behind this is two ground level tracks, then the Feather River, then up into the mountains and the two Honey Moon tunnels that are raised about 6 inches on the main line.  At the west end of the road it curves to the left as it would be going over to another section of the layout. At the curve there will be a little gravel road access to a campground that has been sitting there with trailers but no ground cover for far too long.   For asphalt I do recommend trying the back side of shingles or rolled roofing though.  I quite like it. Looks great.

I probably won't be back in before Christmas so I want to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a very Merry and Joyeous Christmas.  I hope you get to spend some of it with your loved ones and do tell them how much you love and care for them.      I have become very aware lately how easy it is for us to take them for granted.  I will not let that happen again.  But I do know that you all know the reason for the Season and that sits well with me.          NO DRINKING AND DRIVING THOUGH......  OK ?

You all have been very gracious in your thoughts and prayers for me   (Candles too )  and I do so appreciate that and need all I can get to battle this curse.

Ulrich, I love the Lil critter and the scene you have developed. I want to see that come to life soon.  Take Care of yourself good Buddy.

Jeff,  I'm glad to see that leg taking shape for you, pretty soon you'll be out with the Ladies two-stepping......>>  <<  >>  <<

I was glad to see Cajun Chef Ryan in the other day (maybe a different thread) but he is still alive and kicking.  I thought maybe he had fallen off the planet.

Is Lee's new Wife keeping him so busy that he doesn't stop by anymore ??

Well

erm

GOOD TO see Ulrich in here!

we are still here! No flooding power outage YET.

I see Ray is fine, too. 'cept maybe H20 in his basment!

It is 62F here in late December!

The storm seems to have passed us so it is less of a worry, but the flooding as runoff continues will be a 'nother story.

The sn*W is all gone. GOod riddance.

Helping MOH "self assert" in working situation today. Has MOH all in an uproar, who has been sick the past 2 days. Maybe a bug, may be the situation.Maybe what RAY'S DIL had. Maybe NOT. "WHAT we have here, Captain, is what we call a 'Situation'..." "Yes, I see, Number One"...

I am recovering from a weather-related migraine from yesterday.

Dinner will be dead pig roasted, french style greened beans, and tom-Pesto/basil-mozz-noodle salad! YUM! At 4:45pm SHARP!

Well, see yous all in the mornin'.

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, I'll have a Roast Beef Club Sandwich and a cup of decaf for lunch today.

Church today was the annual Pagaent put on by the Sunday School.  Granddaughters were: #1 was thee Star!  #2 was the cutest little sheep who spent her time looking at the Baby in the manger.  They both did their roles perfectly (well Grandpa thought so!) and both seemed to be enjoying thgemselves up there.  Found out after church that DIL and some others in the family are sick with something going around so dinner will not be at their house tonight.  I'll use the time for some hobby stuff!!! Smile, Wink & Grin

Today is cloudy and gray but otherwise pleasent here in the Finger Lakes.  We didn't get any of the freezing stuff that they got in Rochester and to the west to Lake Erie.  Having an emergency power source seems to prevent ice storms I think...Whistling  Creeks and streams are overflowing their banks in a few places, but nothing causing much problem.  Batavia, NY has some flooding with some streets closed this morning, and I know of some other problems from the rain, but nothing we can't handle easily.  I need to check out the sump and make sure I don't water in the basement....  Hmmmm!

Later!

We'll get there sooner or later!
