Spend the better part of the afternoon teaching the critter how to run properly. Mission accomplished! It required a lot of tweaking and longer runs - much to Petra´s dismay, as the noise is something like a bumble bee in full attack!
I measured the speed now. At 12V, it takes 9 seconds for 1 m. If my math is correct, that equates to 400 m in an hour, multiplied by the scale (1/45) makes it 18 scale kph or a little over 11 mph, which is just correct for this type of engine.

Good morning, or perhaps it's afternoon. Since I'm off for the weekend already, I don't really care. After hockey last night, I slept unti 10 and didn't get up until 11.
Yesterday, low 30s and rain. Today, low 60s and rain. Tomorrow, low 30s, but no rain. New England weather.
Ray, a happy birthday to you! Yup, four-wheel-drive makes you completely invincible, doesn't it? Funny how so many of the cars I see off the road in the winter have four-wheel-drive. I used to have a friend that said four-wheel-drive is for getting out of the ditch, not for getting into it.
Todd, we have use-or-lose, too, and worse. If you have, say, 4 hours of unused vacation time at the end of the year, they take an additional four hours from your time for the following year. They say they really, really want you to take your vacation time, because it's good for you, but they also pack deadlines into the end of the year, and have had some folks on mandatory overtime this month, so it's tough sometimes to take a week off and not impact your work. Besides, in November, who wants to take time off? This year, they have some people working between Christmas and New Years, which is officially "holiday" time for us. They will be paid overtime plus their holiday pay.
Well, I've got some paving work to do around the tannery. Hopefully, you've all got your grocery shopping done and won't have to face the crush today.

Went to the cable store to get tv remote switched out, brand new one yet had to fight with the thing for 10 minutes before it would control things, jeesh. All working now.
Went to Michales to pick up some paint I needed then went to get lunch at the frnech fry stand. Got a hot dog,pop and a small fry. On the way home went over to the station and saw a freight come through. The rental car we got was a 2013 Escape. Ours is supposed to be ready for pickup on Friday or Saturday. This afternoon just going to work on the railroad and paint some figures byt first want to flip through the latest issue of MR that came in the mail. Might make a tea also.

Garry, Ulrich, Jabear, Galaxy, Todd, thanks for the advice. Perhaps my dad was right when he said I was too picky in looking for a new job. I tend to only write resumes for jobs that are in my degree field (which was big until a few years ago) and have turned down a job offer from a Dodge dealer (ducks to avoid anything thrown by todd) because I'm a Ford guy... Personally, I regret turning down the dodge dealer's offer. But I think my honesty would hurt me as a car salesman.

Ray, sorry I missed your birthday, so a Happy Birthday to you! Sounds like you are having a birthday week.
This morning I painted the Atlas Middlesex Manufacturing building in my workshop which is also the furnace room. When I brought my wife home for lunch she expressed that she wasn't impressed with the smell of paint in the house. I guess I used that spray bomb a little more than planned but it is the only way to do brick buildings. I thought I was in trouble as I could smell an undercurrent of paint upstairs but I forgot that I don't really have a sense of smell but now I have again been reminded. Now don't be too worried about my using a spray bomb beside a gas furnace. There is a large door on the room that I keep open and I really only use a few short bursts. I also make sure the furnace won't cut in while I'm using it.
We were supposed to get only an inch or two of snow this morning but it turned out to be about six. I tried to go downtown for my meeting but the traffic was hardly moving so what would normally be a 20 minute drive likely would have been an hour or more. I just turned around and went home. Another advantage of being retired.
Sure wish I lived closer to Galaxy! Sounds like some mighty fine eating will be going on at his house tomorrow.
There is a large window right in front of the desk I'm typing from and a large spruce tree right outside. It is covered in snow and I see more is falling. It actually looks nice.
I haven't done much today and here it is nearly 4. I did manage to do a little net research on a couple of places we are thinking of staying at on our next Africa adventure. Although we plan on going in 2015, we have to book a year out at least as some of the camps only have 6 tents.

Managed to get about five figures painted. I figure five HO figures painted decently to be pretty good ( and within my patienece level,lol ). Cleaned track and dusted off some buildings. I also flip through the new MR that came in the mail today. The wife went to bed about 10 minutes ago, she hasnt felt good this afternoon and was falling asleep on the couch. I might paint some more figures tomorrow and run some trains also. I have been working on incoporating some new operating schemes so might play around with that.
Happy Thanksgiving to our Southern friends. I will be watching the packers game tomorrow but probably skip the macy's parade. I have never got into it for some reason, I like the floats but the musicals and brodway show parts dont really do anything for me.

Well yesterday I had to get a new blood glucose meter as strips for my old one (Bayer Contour) are no longer covered. So now I have an Accu-Chek Aviva. I don't particularly like it. Not like I had a choice. It's all the insurance would cover. It doesn't rest in my hand very well and it's hard to get a single strip out of the container. I usually end up with two or three. The meter came with just the meter and the pouch, nothing else. That little bit cost thirty bucks. It didn't include a lancet either. I'm using the one from my old meter. The meter isn't covered by the insurance. However the lancets tips and the strips are. Cost me just three bucks on the copay for a total of thirty-three bucks.No progress on Oliver's adventure today. I did however keep myself busy by tearing down two non-op apple disk drives and using the good parts to build one good disk drive. I then tested it on my mothers old IIe. It works great! In the process I found out that the Apple program I have that tells you how much memory your computer has is a fake. I ran it on my mothers old computer and it said that computer has 128k RAM. That's impossible as the add-on memory card was out of it. It has 64k RAM. I cross checked it on my //e, first with the RAM card in:128k RAM, then with the RAM card out: 128k RAM. I listed the program and traced through it and found that the part that computes the amount of RAM had been circumvented by a subroutine that reports a static number (512 which is then divided by 4 to list 128) instead of the actual number. I have another utility that accurately counts up the RAM but it's in my ProDOS utilities. I have to scan and list all the assignments for slots 1-7 and the aux slot. The amount of RAM is listed at the bottom of the list.

Jeffrey, I think that Bayer may no longer be making the test strips for the old Contour Monitor. I had the ContourUSB one and I can't find any place that can get them. I see at the sites that do Mail Order for supplies through Medicare that all they carry is the newer Contour model which uses a different type of test strip. I guess I will stay with the Easy-Touch monitor I have been using that is off 20 to 30 points for the time being. The Druggest may give me a new monitor for it as we think the one I have is no good (I may have dropped it a few months ago...). Time will tell.
I haven't yet lit the wood stove tonight. I think that is next on the list...

Did a little work on my //e today. It has three drive cards in it. Slots 5, 6 and 7. Slot 7 is my master boot drive, slot 6 I use for my two primary program drives and slot 5 runs two data drives. There's only one slight problem. The drive cables connected to these cards push against the card next to them and this causes the cards to lean. The card in the middle stands up near straight whilst the cards to either side lean outward kinda like a paper fan. This puts pressure on the on the contacts on the card slots and it also pushes the card in slot 5 over against a CP/M co-processor in slot 4. That co-processor tends to run on the hot side and I don't want the drive card near it. I thought about tape but that's temporary and can be messy. If I have to pull a card out for any reason it means removing the tape and having to redo it all. Nope. Too messy. Then I thought about all these old insulin syringes I have. Yeah. That's the ticket. My redneck mind went to work and before long I had a piece of a syringe tube that had three notches in it. One notch for each card. Now the cards stand up straight. You can see the result below. The card with the red light on it is the co-processor I mentioned.Remember the fake memory reporting program I mentioned? I decided to have a little fun with it and changed the static number. I now shows that my computer has 1024k (1mb) of RAM.My family's Thanksgiving is at my sisters place tomorrow. I won't be there. For one it's hard for me to get up there. I was able to shoot a couple of pictures of the critter as it is now. The front buffer needs a little touch up and a good dose of rust. Add the window glazing and that´ll be it.
Once it´s finished, I will put it up for sale - even on30 is to small for my hands and eyes. The money I hope to get will be used on a new project I´ll be doing with that new MRRing friend of mine. We plan to built a mini-series (in fact, two or three) G scale models of an LKM Ns2f "critter". What? You have never heard of LKM? That´s "Lokomotivbau Karl-Marx" in the former GDR. Until 1990, they built a high number of interesting light railway locos, the Ns2f being my favorite.

And Yes, that is what a dusting of snow looks like! The plow has been out on our road, so I haven't looked yet, but that means there is enough to plow {usually 3"+} or at least to salt/molassas.

Amen to that brother! I do confess there have been some times out camping with the troop I have wished my truck was a 4 wheel drive... LOL Luckily, being a standard transmission man and having been taught well how to drive under muddy and icy conditions by my dad. I managed to get out of the problem without it. A couple of times I had to pull the guy with the 4 wheel drive out of the mud... Only because he figured if your wheels spin, give it more gas and got really mired....

I am reducing some Chicken Broth at the moment which will be used to flavor the stuffing later. I used to use Chicken Bouillon Cubes... Then I read the label. Quick! Name one thing that is not found in a Chicken Bouillon Cube often these days??? What? Chicken? Right! Just salt and lots of chemicals to make it taste something like chicken....
At the moment something called the sun is out this morning... Hope the panels clear and fire up. I could use a few more kWh of power around here...
