Howdy ..

Ray ..... The Diner was empty all day. I did not want to say anything but Todd was here earlier..... Er, well... It's good you brought nice smelling flowers. ... ... Hope you have time for the blacksmith shop tomorrow as you said.

Ulrich .... Again. Your friends are always here in the Diner. ... Perhaps, the Lord has better plans for you than being a politician. However, it is hard to understand because Germany could use more people like you in government.

Flip ...... We all need a day of rest, I guess. Ours is normally Sunday.

Karl .... Sounds like a Barry-sized burger.

Well, guess what. ..... Shelley went to Paducah today with lady friends. The spent the day doing stuff. She went shopping, and could not resist a kitten at PetSmart which was a rescued kitten  It is a female and is mostly gray with tiger-like striping. ..... Any suggestions for a name..... Now we have 2 cats, and so far, Sassy the first cat is not sure about this idea.

I took advantage of Shelley not being here all day. I completed some more bench work for my layout extension. John Boy was asking for photos, but I've not taken any yet of this extension.

Sue .... Have you been here this week? Hope to see more layout pictures. Even old ones from you. .

Also, where is CN Charlie? ...... and JR? ......... Inch? .... Jerry? ...  I heard by email from JimCG, and he still has a lot of other stuff going on. Hoppefully he will be back in the Diner soon ........  There are several others who are MIA. . ....... People might return now that the Diner smells better now thanks to  Ray's flowers.

.

Good Evening all!Cowboy

Flo, I'm a little hungry tonight, I believe tonight I'll start off with one of the double heart attack 1/2 pound burgers smothered in bacon and Thousand Island dressing, a large order of Western Fries, a Chicken fingers platter with Honey Mustard sauce, and some apple fritters. Cheesecake ala mode for dessert too! Dinner

Fun day outside today. Son #5 came over today. I didn't tell him about the new John Deere, I just asked him to get the Cub out of the shed so we could move some tree trimmings. Suddenly I'm hearing him squealing for joy and saying how he needs to drive it. I told him to ask SWMBO who promptly said NO! No   Silly boy! Laugh
Now that the Big Deere is gone, we did manage to get the Ranger out of the weeds and into the garage for repair. Oh what a sight! After it became evident that even on blacktop, the Cub had the power to pull, just no traction. Sigh Since it is Hydrostatic, we set the throttle to 1/3, engaged the trans and he and I (yes,me with an arm brace) were pushing on the truck and it still didn't roll. Angry Next step, jack up the truck and put a piece of 2x4 under each wheel. Grumpy Finally it rolled out! 6 months in the yard it had sunk 3 inches!! Sigh
Now comes the fun part. 1st, tear down the steering column to repair the slipped rack behind the cylinder, then once it gets running fix the trans and/or transfer case. Then new valve cover gaskets, a tune up, then turn it over to son #2 for bodywork. Hey, if old cars were easy, everybody would own one!
No trains today, maybe tomorrow during Nascar!

Ulrich, glad to see you back among the living! Yes

Ray, Cool looking plant there, but did you say they were pollinated by bats? Do you let them in the house for this??

Todd, You saying welp kinda reminds me of Al Delvecchio on "Happy Days" when he says "Yep, Yep, Yep"   Smile, Wink & Grin

I'll be in the corner both, filling up my hollow leg! Mischief

The Diner is quiet today. What's up everybody?

Hello....   Hello???  Hmmm. place is empty again...  JANIE!?!  Oh there you are.  Slow day today huh?  I'll just have a cup of decaf to warm me up tonight.

I had a great day today at the meet.  We had a fair sized crowd for it, but there were several people who came that have been members for a long while and haven't been to a meet since I took office a number of years ago.  Most of them came to get the tour of the Roundhouse in Batavia.  I'll have some photos of the roundhouse and the meet tomorrow for you.

I have been sitting here catching up on several forums I frequent and printing the Class Photo from the reunion.  The committee decided we should have 80 printed so we will have a few left for the archives if needed.  I am doing the last group of 20 right now.  Tomorrow i will print off one copy of the entire booklet for final approval and then this week I should get them all printed as well.  Then the ladies and I will go out to lunch somewhere here in Geneva to celebrate and then spend the afternoon assembling the booklets. putting them in the envelopes and addressing them.

While sitting here I started to smell a very sweet odor in the room.  Checked it out and found this...

There are two in blossom tonight and 3 more that will probably bloom tomorrow night.  It is the Night Blooming Cereus.  The blosoms (for those of you who haven't seen them before) are about 5" across and in the wild are pollonated by bats.  They grow in the desert areas of the Southwest US and Central America.  The plant I have is over 40 years old and rewards me with blooms several times a year!  Gorgeous!

Tomorrow I am going to get back to the layout rooms and get some serious stuff done on the Blacksmith Shop.  I also have to drive to Canandaigua to take care of Claude and Clim the cats.  But the mowing of the yard will wait a day or two (or 4) as it rained most of today here and will for the next few days also.  leaves are turning and some trees have already lost most of the leaves for the year.  Time for me to also trim the hedge, wash windows, and get some other outside stuff done.  But not tomorrow...

Ulrich, good to hear from you.  i was worried about you after the intensity of your life during the campaign.  I have a Scouting friend who was a politician in Albany for two terms I think.  He is now a County Court Judge.  He introduces himself as a "Recovering" politician these days.  We don't always agree on the issues, but he is a good man!  He also is a railfan...  Can't be all bad. Whistling  Anyway glad you are recovering your strength!

Hope you all have a good evening out there.

Hi Guys,

Another rainy day here. Which is okay as we need a bit of rain. Just watching the hockey game right now. Did the house chores early today and spent the rest of the day playing Madden 25,NHL 14 and cant wait for Tuesday when F1 2013 arrives. Went over to the electronic store and picked up a new PS3 controller ( in Blue color ) which is a break from the normal black ones. I think im up to about 5 of them now, lol. Just looking at my game release calendar for the next year now and have the following noted

F1 2013 - Oct 8th

Call of Duty - Nov 5

And that will be it until MLB the show comes out next March. So with all those games I will for sure be kept busy in my free time. I have no railroad projects lined up at all this winter. Maybe that will change, hopefully it does as I always work on the railroad in the winter but at the moment I just plan on cathing up on some video games.

Might try to grab some sleep soon as i want to get up at 2am for F1 ( Im a diehard F1 fan )

I have "15 minute projects" ... They never are completed in 15 minutes. They take hours, and end up causing more work than I had in the first place. ...

Oh I have my fair share of those too.Laugh

Ulrich: You beat me ot the top, so I will have a full English Breakfast on you!

good to see you back and feeling healthy!

Those who run here often do get political type jobs, but you may also get offers for jobs you never thought of  out of the public eye. {if someone is on your party side, ha ha LOL}

SO...something MAY open up for you yet!

So don't be disheartened!

It ALSO builds your resume to have an activity instead of just "dead time" on your resume!

Also- the entire world economy could collapse entirely and we all be out on the streets, so don't despair! {somehow if that happens all will blame the USA}

Have a GREAT DAY!

Good Morning Folks!

Yes, I am back! The past few days were not really pleasant, I suffered from a complete breakdown of all systems - just burned out! No light, as the batteries were dead. But I am back again, risen from the ashes.

I have decided to end my political career, not only due to the near miss. Decent folks don´t go into politics, and those who do, won´t stay decent for long or leave just in time. I have chosen to stay decent ....

This will give me time to pick-up model railroading again, and I am really looking forward to it. I am going to revive my project of a layout in a box, will finish the little critter I have started to build and start to enjoy life again - within the little means I have. When you don´t have a future, you don´t have to worry about it.

Have a good weekend and blessings to all!

Edit: I got TOPS! So eat up and order whatever you have set your heart on! It´s on me today!

morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD SATURDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Saturday, October 5th, 2013!

Today is our exciting trip on the Eastern Maine Railroad.....!!!

MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!!!

Today's fun limmericks:

There once was a girl named Irene,

who lived on distilled kerosene.

She's started drinkin'

Something more stinkin'

And since then has never been seen!

There was a fat turkey named Sam,
Who gobbled whenever he ran.
He came out of the bush,
Presenting his tush,
And was shot up the butt by a man.

{hmmm, tasty dinner}

Weird words:

GALIMAUFREY (n.): An 18th century term meaning a large helping of hodgepodge consisting of leftovers, scraps, or remnants form the Larder {a place to keep food like locked cabinet}
Autoschediastic - Done on the spur of the moment or improvised.
Jannock - To be fair, genuine {always be Jannock in your dealings!}

an anagram for you:

Agree = Eager

This evening I watched the 1934 release of 'The Silver Streak' and thoroughly enjoyed it. First time I've seen it on DVD and I have to say it looked much better than it did on VHS.

I spent a bit of time earlier reattaching some metal handrails on a blue box Athearn GP50 (UP paint but not for long if I have anything to do with it). I don't have any of my decals here. They were all left at my trailer. If I can find some thin enough paper I can print some like I used to. It's kinda tricky getting the background color right but it can be done. First though I need to get a color cartridge. All I have is an old black one and it's acting like it's running out. Gonna be a while before any decal printing gets done.

he trip into town the doc today was very demanding for me. I had to get a ride with my brother-in-law. His choice of transportation is a Ford F150 pickup and it's high enough that it needs step rails. Getting up into it was very tricky. I did manage to crawl up into it though. Getting out was easy. Just slide out onto my one foot, turn and sit back in my Hugo chair. Getting back into the truck when we were leaving the docs office was much easier as my B-I-L had parked it so the right side was close to a concrete wheelchair ramp, close enough that I could easily jump onto the step rail then grab the panic handle and use it to lift my 240lb plus body onto the seat. I'm gonna be feeling that in the morning!

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

The caboose is Athearn and is from my nephews old layout.

Hi Fellas,

Only one more week of freedom for me. I go back to work on the 15th. The PC im on now is acting up again, has been for most of the summer actually. So eventually I will have to gte another. I will probably end of with a laptop as I dont playing games on the PC much anymore.

On the topic of gaming. I have been playing a ton lately in between chores and such. Alot of Madden 25 NHL 14 and Grand Theft Auto ( I am over 18, guys If I had kids I would never ever let them play GTA )  one of the reason alot of gaming is the weather, has been raining a ton and calling for it until at least Tuesday, which is fine by me as I am having F1 2013 for my PS3 delivered. With any luck the rain will stop enough on Monday to allow me to cut the grass and throw the bagger on a suck up the leaves.

Did some work outside the other day ( pulling up the LED moonlights and garden decorations ) I actually get a little sad doing this as you can tell we are almost at the end of nice weather. Its weird as I was sitting out the other day with my coffee and latest MR, the backyard has a lonely feeling in the fall compared to the spring when the birds are singing the sun putting you in a good mood. The nice green leaves have been tuend a nice yellow and are falling, the birds dont some by much lately and things just feel like fall settling in.

Over the last few years I have been getting these feeling stronger and stronger at the end of summer. Almost a depression of the summer leaving. Between now and Christmas is okay with all the activities going on but come the first week of January until April I will be in a bad mood. I love winter sports so if we get some decent snow to go skating and play hockey that might make me feel better.

Still having some anxious thought about going back to work. I wish I had a job where I could work on my own and be left on my own. Well I have rambled on enough fellas, going to go check in on a few things and debate whether to stay up and watch F1 qualifying from Korea or record and watch in the morning.

Anybody wants to hit me up on PM about anything I listed would be great.

I dont think I suffer SAD I just hate seeing the summer go. Fall is good though will football and baseball playoffs.

Evenin' folks,

Ah, hello?  HELLO!?  Place is deserted.....  Oh Hi, Janie!  Glad to see at least the waitress is still here.  Just a cup of decaf for me right now.

I think everything is done and packed for the Division Meet tomorrow.  I'll be out the door by 6:15 or so to get the donuts on the way.  It is about an hour and 25 minute drive to Oakfield from where I live and I have to be there by 8AM to set up for the day.  Hope someone gets there to open the church for me!

Need to check my blood sugar, take evening meds and head to bed.

Prayers for all in need!

Got the doc visit taken care of. He's curious as to why my blood pressure keeps jumping up and down. One minute it's above normal, the next it's going way below normal, like it was when I was a kid. I had frequent problems with low blood pressure back in the late sixties up to the mid seventies. Late seventies it closer to normal then when I went on meds for diabetes in the eighties it shot up above normal and I've had high blood pressure ever since, well until recently when my home health care nurse noticed it diving below normal. At least now I know why I've been having dizzy spells and briefs periods of blindness. They last only last a second or two and usually come after something lake a violent sneeze. But anyway they did a battery of tests to try and find out how bad this thing with the blood vessel is. They say there very definitely is one blocked. They can hear it but can't quite pinpoint it. I think they're trying to determine if I'm strong enough for any surgery that may be needed. HELLO! I just had a leg cut off and came out of that with no problem. I can bench press a mechanical bed with one arm! I think I'm strong enough! The next step will be a sonogram. That's scheduled for the 27th. My father went see his doctor this morning to find out what's causing some health issues he's been suffering with lately and got some news he wasn't expecting. We have something in common. He's a type two diabetic. The doc put him on some medicine for it and told him he has to modify his diet and to avoid white and wheat bread as much as possible. That's gonna be hard for him. He loves bread! Especially wheat.

Well I got some items in the mail today.

An Athearn blue box GP50.

A 'Silver Streak' DVD.

And this anniversary boxcar with a unique road number that won't be repeated.

I still have one more item coming and it should be here Monday. An Apple Disk II disk drive, model A2M0003.

Oh, things went bump in the night!! Surprise

Oh, it was only Galaxy,,,,,,had me thinking it might have been Musicvampires, mummies and the Holy Ghost, these are the things that terrify me the most "Music

Modeling wise, 3 units went to their new homes today, 3 more are waiting to be picked up, and the Mikado project is back on the bench for now. Probably will start soldering more details on next week.

Son #5 will be here this weekend, so I'll probably be in the garage or the yard for most of it. He thinks we will resurrect the truck  from its weed filled parking spot. I dunno.Hmm I'm about done with it. But you can't tell a 17 year old anything.Bow

I don't know if this happens to you folks, but I start on one project, then get side tracked by doing something else, and do not seem to get as much completed as I would like. I should make a list, but I probably would not follow it any way.Whistling

You're kidding right? I mean that is like an everyday normal for me.Laugh

I have "15 minute projects" ... They never are completed in 15 minutes. They take hours, and end up causing more work than I had in the first place. ...

I'll have coffee and a donut.

Cheers.

I resemble all of the above......

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a pot of dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR Mug and a couple sour cream donuts for dunking, please.

I have about 3 days worth of stuff to do today as the Division Meet is tomorrow and I am just now checking the supplies for it...  Already printed out a bunch of ballets for the contests.  It should be a good day as the afternoon program includes a guided tour of the Genesee Valley transportation Facility (In an old Roundhouse in Batavia).

Got to get moving.  Be back after everything is done...

I'll have coffee and a donut.

I'm expecting two packages to arrive today. One is from a member on my forum and the other is from another forum I frequent. Other than that the only thing going on today is a doc appointment in town so they can look at the blood vessels in my neck. After that, no plans.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a stack of buttermilk pancakes  with maple syrup and a side of bacon please. Thanks.

Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, with a high near 88. And Sunday high of 62.

This no smoking thing has given me a sore throat. Haven’t had one of those in ……can’t remember. Years. But it’ll be 2 weeks come Sunday and I couldn’t be happier. Well, I could but that’d  require the influx of mucho casho.

Welp, got to my usual feeding grounds yesterday. Owner lady stopped by to apologize for not talking but she was “very busy! Two buses plus busy day!” And boy they were. Place was packed and people waiting for a seat. All I could think of was my experiences at other places. That, and I still don’t see the purpose of eating chicken feet. Tasty recipe, but you can use something a little easier to eat. Anyway, here this girl has the whole section to herself, probably 15-20 tables, and when I get up to get another plate, I come back to no dishes on the table and, if my drink gets to half, she asks to refill. Most places around here, they have half the tables and they’ll clean the table mostly after you leave plus, you could literally die of thirst if you drink your drink too fast and they still are so busy they just can’t get anything done. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t require a clean table or a drink refilled at ½ full or a neck rub, or even to be burped like a baby. No. I don’t expect that at all and am just fine with the way most places operate. I just find it interesting that what is the norm at some places and is done without even breaking into a trot looking like it’s just as easy as can be and still asking how you are AND taking the time to smile, while at others the folks just can’t seem to handle just picking up a plate as they pass or returning within 15 minutes with the refill or kinda give you the feeling they think you're making their job harder by just being there. Which..Hmm I guess is true.

Another day of favoring the footsy. Not getting much done, but I have to w*rk again tonight so….

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Next, on our trip around the Great {large} State of Maine, we shall ride the Maine Eastern Railroad!

Come aboard their restored vintage railcars for a carefree journey through the spectacular scenery of mid-coast Maine, between Brunswick and Rockland.  You’ll experience charming seaside villages, picturesque sailboats, lobstermen working their traps on the bay, tidewater wildlife and in autumn, magnificent foliage.

Whether you crave adventure, world-class arts and culture, or simply stunning sights and relaxation, your ride on the railroad is a ticket to the best that the mid-coast has to offer. With convenient and luxurious transportation on the Maine Eastern, your mid-coast holiday will remain in your heart for a lifetime.  All Aboard!

Regular season service begins in August and will continue through the fall foliage season until October.  So we are JUST in TIME for "leaf peeping" scenery!

STATION MILES
Brunswick 0.0
Bath 8.7
Wiscasset 20.0
Rockland 56.6
The Maine Eastern Railroad operates seasonal passenger excursion trains for 56.6 miles along Maine's mid-coast region.  The route for these trains is the former Maine Central Railroad Rockland Branch.  Beginning in Brunswick, 30 miles northeast of Portland, the line snakes along the waterfronts of the coastal towns Bath and Wiscasset before traveling through the beautiful scenery of Maine's forests.  The line reaches the coast again in Rockland, a magnificent coastal town and popular tourist destination.
Tomorrow, Saturday the 5th, we will Board for the
2013 DAMARISCOTTA PUMPKINFEST & REGATTA:
DAMARISCOTTA, ME    -
  :
The Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta, held annually in Damariscotta, ME, is one of the largest pumpkin festivals in the world.  This event, now in its 7th consecutive year, regularly attracts over 15,000 people from all over the globe.  For more information on this year's festival and to plan your visit, please visit the Damariscotta Pumpkinfest & Regatta's website.

The Maine Eastern Railroad's normally-scheduled train will be making an extra stop at Newcastle on Saturday, October 12th for people who wish to attend the event from out of town. Dubbed the Pumpkin Patch Express, this train will be available to bring people from Brunswick, Bath, and Wiscasset to Newcastle and back.
The trains:

A trip to the Maine coast is all about relaxing while the salty breeze lifts your spirits - so why not park your car and begin your vacation? With a Maine Eastern Railroad excursion, you can leave the car and the traffic behind and get on board to carefree fun with a unique way to experience the spectacular views of the Maine coast.

The Maine Eastern passenger fleet is comprised of restored streamlined stainless steel railcars and locomotives from the Art Deco era of the 1940s and 1950s.  This equipment has been fully rebuilt to today's standards of safety and comfort, and provides a perfect social setting for lively conversation about the scenery and historic highlights of the 56.6-mile route.

The train rolls along the craggy coast for about two hours. Along the way, you'll spot charming seaside villages, sailboats tacking in the breeze, swooping gulls soaring overhead, and during the fall, trees that glow with a kaleidoscope of color.

LOCOMOTIVES
The Maine Eastern's two vintage passenger locomotives were originally built by the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors for the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad (better known simply as the "New Haven").  They are designated as FL9-type locomotives, and were originally equipped to operate using either diesel power or third-rail electrical power to access the New York Central Railroad's Grand Central Terminal in New York City.  They were built with a unique five-axle configuration that allowed extra space in the rear of the locomotive that housed the third-rail electrical equipment and a steam generator to heat passenger cars.  The fifth axle also improved the locomotives' weight distribution, which allowed the FL9s to meet weight-per-axle restrictions on the Park Avenue Viaduct that leads into Grand Central Terminal.

Our two FL9s, #488 and #489, carried EMD serial numbers #21962 and #21969 and were built in September of 1957 as New Haven road numbers #2016 and #2021.  When the New Haven was taken over by Penn Central on December 31, 1968, they became Penn Central #5016 and #5021.  Penn Central was merged into Conrail on April 1, 1976, and our two locomotives became Conrail property and retained their Penn Central numbers.  Conrail almost immediately sold many of its surplus passenger locomotives to Amtrak, and our two engines became Amtrak numbers #239 and #240.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Amtrak contracted Morrison-Knudsen to begin upgrading its FL9 locomotives with head-end power generation systems, and the steam generators were replaced with Cummins diesel engines.  When they were rebuilt by M-K, our two FL9s were renumbered to #488 and #489.  They ran for Amtrak between Albany and New York City into the late 1990s, when they were replaced with new General Electric dual-mode P32AC-DM locomotives.

Around 2002, #488 and #489 were acquired by the Maine Eastern Railroad's parent, the Morristown & Erie Railway, for excursion train service.  At this time, the third-rail electric capabilities were removed, making them strictly diesel passenger locomotives.  After three years of excursion service on the M&E, the #488 and #489 were sent north in 2005 to serve on the Maine Eastern and have been pulling our passenger trains ever since.  Aside from sister FL9 #484, which operates on the Orford Express in Montreal, Quebec, and #2019, which operates on the Naugatuck Railroad in Thomaston, CT, #488 and #489 are the only other remaining FL9s in service anywhere in the world.

PASSENGER CARS

The Maine Eastern's passenger car fleet consists of five streamlined stainless steel cars constructed in the late 1940s and early 1950s for a variety of railroads throughout the United States. All of these cars have been extensively rebuilt and upgraded to current safety and operational standards while still retaining their postwar luxury and comfort.
For information on the technical and operating specifications of each car, please visit ourcharter page.

Good evening all,

Stopping in to see what's up after a long absence.  My temporary job ended 31 May but I've been busy since then with family health issues, vacation and rebuilding our brick patio.  Got back involved with a volunteer position at a Christian radio station today and received a warm welcome back.....beats a real job when you get hugs from all the female staff Wink

There's a 5'2" x 1'11" piece of 3/4" cabinet-grade plywood out in my garage that's whispering "Use me to build a switching layout, dummy."  I might not be able to ignore the call for too long.  Sounds like November's project to me.

Have a splendid evening.

Went out to dinner today with my father and step mother. My choice of places. Los Mayos of course. It's the easiest one for me to get into. Upon getting home it was another upper body workout with the walker. I didn't trip in the doorway this time. But as a result of all the walker use today I'm very tired and sore. The bed is looking really good. Got an appointment tomorrow. They want to do ultrasound scans of my neck to find the partially blocked blood vessel that's playing heck with my hearing. So I'm calling it a night. I'll see y'all tomorrow.
