Hi to everyone. It's way too nice outside to go down in the basement and work on trains. So, I took my spray paints, tools and weathering powders outside and worked on the deck. My package of 100 Intermountain wheelsets arrived this week, so I've started upgrading batches of cars. I plan to do 5 cars at a time. Today - mission accomplished.
galaxy - have you tried calling the dentist or oral surgeon or whoever is going to pull the tooth to tell him/her that you've got a lot of pain in the tooth? Pulling a tooth these days isn't generally a long procedure, so they may be able to squeeze you in to relieve the discomfort. The worst they can do is apologize and say, "See you Friday."
jeffrey - I'm sad to see you layout go. That bare sheet of plywood held memories.
One of today's metal-wheel project cars is an old Athearn gondola from my original HO train set. It came with 6 large canisters. I have no idea what they would carry, so today I printed up a set of decals that say, "Caution! Upsidasium. Weightless when loaded." One more moose reference for my town of Moose Bay.
Wow, that Upsidasium brought me right to the top. Set 'em up, and keep 'em coming through the Stanley Cup game tonight. Go Bruins!
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.
You guys ever have one of those days????????????
First- I cut the extension cord to the trimmer.
Second- A piece broke off my tassimo coffee maker ( still under warranty, but still )
Third- Shower starts leaking, it appears to be some corrosion around the threads on the pipe.
Fourth - It looks like one of my goldfish are going to die also, he hasn't looked right in a few days and its just sort of lying on the bottom of the tank. Like I have said before, once these fish die I am never going to get fish and will gladly give away the tank to whoever wants it.
It has been one of those days, I'm afraid to work on anything model railroad related. Maybe just watch some TV. If that doesn't do something either.
That and my PC is on its last legs I think. I still have a old tower here with XP on it and the wife has her laptop.

I can do a pretty good job of embarrassing a sailor too.

galaxy Burlington Northern #24 Hey guys, just checking in real quick. I've given up on the 4' x 6' layout, and will be opting for another 2' x 4' layout. I'm going to switch to DCC because one of the loco's I will hopefully be buying soon will be DCC equipped, so I'm going to avoid a big layout for the time being. Gary, I wouldn't give up on the 4x6, but I definitely WOULD be changing to DCC! Unfortunately, you are learning the hard way what many of who have learned the hard way have to say: READ, READ, READ some more and then STUDY hard BEFORE you spend one thin dime in MRRIng so You KNOW what you want and need for a layout! Your best bet: 1} study hard the options for a 4x6 layout, and then build one that gives you MOST of what you want, . 2} research more on DCC so you know more of what it is all about, , 3} Study wiring for DCC {simpler than with DC}, , 4} build your small module for practice, then and ONLY THEN, proceed with buying the equipment and stuff you need to build the 4x6 layout. give it a shot, you might like it! It IS a hobby {for enjoyment} after all!!!

I didn't want to, but the benchwork wood was to flimsy and I smashed my thumb with a hammer needless to say my language and vocabulary in those couple minutes got colorful. I'm probably just gonna do a simple 2 x 4 so I can have something, the way things are looking though I may not even do that. I'll probably just upgrade and standardize all of my equipment so that it will work together with no issues.
Ulrich's plan for me nailed what I wanted, it was just a matter of getting track. I've read and studied, re read, re studied, hand drew a plan, got chewed out for it, told my layouts(including EZ track on the floor) were simplistic, and it seems that whenever I run trains anymore there's always a cloud of guilt hanging around. at this point I'm not sure what's keeping me from putting them away until a better time, stubbornness, or the need for something familiar that I can escape to. I think it's stubbornness.
Happy Birthday Mr. Dispatcher!

About half of it broke off, so it is unrepairable...and they were going to use that tooth to secure my new bottom partial to!
Now absessed...my luck!

I have another infected tooth so on antibiotics {not fun for what comes out} and the good pain killer is NOT quite doing it! with half the tooth gone it is slated for pulling on Friday now all I have to do is make it to then. ARGH!
Well best get some chores done!
Down to the plywood.I see on my package tracking that the Apple 80 column/memory expander card I requested from San Francisco will be in my mailbox today. That was fast! It was shipped on the 12th. Looks like I'll be converting the 64k Apple IIe to 128k today. That should take all of about five minutes.
Hi Guys.
Nice and warm out today, that's one of the reasons I was out early doing yard work. Had one little problem though, I cut through the extension cord while trimming the bushes. It was just a cheap one that I use for the hedge trimmers ( for just that reason ) I keep my heavy duty one inside away from anything that will chop it in half. I guess I will just pick up another cheap one when it comes time to trim the buses again sometime at the end of July. They don't grow all that fast so that's good. Still a little peeved about it though as I hadn't cut through one in a few years now. Sun is getting quite intense so I might stay in now. I got a sunburn a few weeks ago and felt like crap for a couple days after so don't want to repeat that.
Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I'll have a bowl of old phart granola cereal (any of them) and lots of dark roast coffee to get my old bones moving today.
Still have 2.5 or more face cords of wood to move today, a wash is going as I type this, and I have to be at my son's house by 5:30 today to follow them over to my granddaughters' dance recital tonight. Both of them are in it this year. Should be fun.
Fair and mild outside today. currently 68°F with a high of 72°F later this afternoon. Solar panels are now cranking out some power again. Alread made 10kWh this morning so it should be a 25kWh day I hope. Got a lot of catching up to do. Only made 200 kWh so far and half the month is gone!
Happy Birthday, Otto!

Morning All,
Currently it is 55 with an expected high of 85 with some breezy conditions this afternoon.
Well, daughters came over last night for a fried food fest. We had corn dogs, hushpuppies, onion rings, and chicken, some adult beverages, and some toffee like desert, one of them made. House had some real nice smells. We then watched Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope", and then "Red" with Bruce Willis. Got to bed well after 1:00, but it is always enjoyable when we get together. They spent the night.
Today I hope to finish laying the track to complete both loops of the railroad.

Good Morning!!!
Coffee and strawberry rhubarb pie please, thank you!
Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 10am, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82.
Garry- IIRC and I usually don’t, they rate mileage as an average of I forget how many passes on a level track with very gentle curves spaced far apart for as little resistance as possible and at a steady speed of 50mph. As steady as they can get. Or was it 55. 45. Pretty sure it was 50. Either way, they are conditions that are very hard to replicate in the real world.
“these ratings are for comparison purposes only. You actual mileage will vary based on your driving habits and conditions”. Thank you.
Well, trucks are cheaper in certain conditions of course, but, but, but, trains are the best choice if the distance is far enough and there is not a substantial (whatever that may be) distance to wherever it must go from where the train can to make it logistically and economically unbalanced as is evident, I would say, by the amount of semi trailers being hauled on trains.
Pay no attention to the above statement. I just wanted to use the term “logistically and economically unbalanced.”
Mr Dispatcher Sorry, I generally come in of a morning so anything that happens after I've been in I don't hear about til the next day.
Well don’t know what I’ll do today as I’m done with the A/C project. They said it really seemed to work. I do need to mow still and I know Brenda is eyeballing the paint for the living room setting in the entranceway. PLUS, I have a train set I need to attend to. The main cook at w*rk, we call him the Head Chef, or sometimes The Executive Chef if the Mayor orders that night, because he's been there the longest, calls it a trainset. He doesn’t mean it in a derogatory way, he actually thinks they are cool. That’s just what he calls it. Doesn’t bother me. He’s the one who plays those games with cards and little scale model figures. Can’t remember what they are all called. Magic is one….., can’t remember what he makes the “figs” for.
Best check to see how the Black Raspberries are coming along. Can't just let em go to bird food this year. My little buddy got her area flooded out so she’s not sure hers’ll produce. Hard to say as they had already flowered. She’s more concerned about all the new starts I gave her this year dying out. They hadn’t been in the ground very long. She say she hasn’t been back to check. Either way sh’ll get some of mine.

Good morning. It's 77° with 74% humidity. The high will be 95°. Will I be out in it? Not if I can help it!The only thing on the schedule today is to bring in the trash can and pack the remnants of the layout extension into it. I'll salvage as much track as I can. When I finish all the should be left is the benchwork and the plywood top. That will be the extent of today's activity. I'm no happier about this than you are but the computer station is an absolute must.
Good morning.
Hope to get a little more decaling done on some of my equipment. Also look to redo some weathering on one freight car.

we hear about "cloud computing", but is it "cloud nine" we are computing on?
CLOUD NINE:MEANING:
In a state of blissful happiness
Origin:
one idea:
For some odd reason, the number 9 has always been considered by mathematicians to have some super power? Some say it goes back to the Holy Trinity since 3 x 3 = 9. And later in Victorian times, a person who was all dressed up was said to be "dressed to the nines." So what does this have to do with clouds? It was believed that clouds existed on a successful level of layers, and the ultimate high layer was number 9. So anyone who is suddenly super happy, said to be soaring in the clouds, and the level of the cloud they were assumed to be on, was...level 9. So Cloud Nine! Today another way of saying you are very happy or in love, is to say that you are "on cloud 9".
Now the real version{?}:
Whenever a phrase includes a number, like the whole nine yards etc., then attempts to find its derivation usually focus on the number. 'On cloud nine' is no exception. A commonly heard explanation is that the expression originated as one of the classifications of cloud which were defined by the US Weather Bureau in the 1950s, in which 'Cloud Nine' denotes the fluffy cumulonimbus type that are considered so attractive. Another explanation is that the phrase derives from Buddhism and that Cloud Nine is one of the stages of the progress to enlightenment of a Bodhisattva {one destined to become a Buddha}.
However, neither of theoe explanations hold much water. For starters, both the cloud classifications and the Buddhist stages to enlightenment have ten levels. To single out the last one stage of either is rather like attributing the source of the 'whole nine yards' to American Football, where it is ten yards rather than nine, that is the significant measure! Also, arguing against those origins is the fact that nine is far from the only number that has been linked with clouds. Early examples of 'cloud' expressions include clouds seven, eight, nine and even thirty-nine.
It seems that it is the clouds themselves, rather than the number of them, that were in the thoughts of those who coined this phrase. The imagery was originally of a 'cloud cuckoo land' or 'head in the clouds' dreaminess, induced by either intoxication or inspiration. And not so much the the 'idyllic happiness' that we now associate with the phrase. The early references all come from mid 20th century USA and the earliest that I've found is in Albin Pollock's directory of slang, The Underworld Speaks, 1935:
"Cloud eight, befuddled on account of drinking too much liquor." 'Cloud nine' comes a little later, for example, in The Oxnard Press-Courier, August 1946: "I think he has thought of everything, unless the authorities pull something new on him out of cloud nine." Around the same period we find clouds seven and thirty-nine, in The San Mateo Times, April 1952 and Ross’s Hustlers, 1956, respectively: "Mantovani's skilled use of reeds and strings puts this disc way up on Cloud Seven." "That stuff is way up on Cloud Thirty-nine." The early favourite was 'cloud seven' and many of the oldest citations use that form, as in this piece from The Dictionary of American Slang, 1960, the very first printed definition of the term: "Cloud seven - completely happy, perfectly satisfied; in a euphoric state." This early preference for seven as the significant number may have been influenced by the existing phrase 'seventh heaven'. Since the 1980s or so, 'cloud nine' has become predominant. That has probably been influenced by the use of 'cloud nine' in popular music - George Harrison adopted the term as the title of his 1987 album and, more notably, The Temptations' 'psychedelic soul' album of the same name, in 1969. Linguistic hype being what it is, we now hear people expressing their happiness with the "inflationary" 'cloud ten', which brings us back to the cumulonimbus/Buddhist theories. A Sixth of a Pie, or Eighth heaven anyone??

Good Morning!
The sun is out again, after two more or less miserable and wet days. No risk of a flood in my neighborhood, so we are safe on that end.
Garry - the little car we now have is a regular four-seater subcompact, with 4 doors. When I drive it, it is a 3-seater, as I have to move the driver´s seat all the way back. It is surprisingly roomy inside and seats my 6´5" quite comfortably. It is just perfect for the two of us, even for a holiday trip.
It is not a race car, but with a top speed of 100mph it makes driving on the Autobahn a still enjoyable experience. Btw, mine is black ...
Mr.Dispatcher - and a big to you, sir!
Y´all have a good one!
Well folks, i hope everyone is well, it's been a little over two hours and I don't feel any older ( I sure didn't get any prettier either ). Turned the big 52 today. Jeffery don't feel bad about tearing out part of your layout, at least you have space for one. Living with my daughter & fiance the room I have is just big enough for the stuff I have with me( comp. table, small shelf unit for some box's and bed ). there's no where else to put a layout even a small switching shelf layout. Too top it off my daughter hates trains... maybe hate is the wrong word, Despise, loath, want to blow up,are more like it for her so a small space in the living room is out of the question. With no car there's not even a club layout close( I'm just 35 miles east of Fort Wayne,Ind.) in N.W. Ohio. SO Who ever gets the top of next page just pass me the bill. Otto.
P.S. thanks for the small use of the
Evenin' folks!
Janie just my cup of decaf please.
Man, I am going to be sore tomorrow! I moved about 1.5 face cords of firewood from the driveway to my back porch today. Also drove down to Penn Yan to take the broken pull rope assembly off my old rototiller to a Mennonite equipment repair place I have used several times over the past few years. I brought it in and figured I would have to leave it and drive back over and get it next week. The kid at the desk looked at it, nodded his head and said, "I'll be right back", taking the assembly with him. A minute later he comes back and said "he'll be right out". So I waited and checked out some of the lines of new equipment they have in stock. About 10 minutes later a younger kid comes out with the repaired pull rope assembly, and charged me... Are you sitting down? Ahem, with parts, labor, and tax..... he charged me... $5.77. LOL. Now you know why I do business with these folks. Brought it home, put the 4 screws back in place after positioning it where it goes, Gave the rope two pulls, and the old rototiller came to life.... Should be good for another 20 years or so I think.
Hey look, Jeffrey is moving his home! Got his van all hooked up and ready to move it... What, oh that's just the stuff on his layout... OK, I see.
Time to hit the hay! Hey Galaxy, there's one for you to explain in the morning... Hit the hay!
Prayers for all in need.

Had a good day at work! I do like working there, well till the Real Manager (Evil Scott) comes back Sunday. Dave the Area Supervisor was at the shop today and told us he likes the way the shop is running right now! He all so stated "he was going to have a long talk with Scott about the way he treats employees". He has fired around 25 people in 1 year!
TMarshKen- Oh sure I think about the Roadrunner. All the time. Everyday in fact. I say….”I really should get that thing going this summer” of course I’ve been saying that for how many years now? 15, 16? Remember now I got it back in 1980 sooooo, that's not as bad as it sounds. I’ll check to see and if I do I’ll let you know about the parts but…..you may not wanna here this but….I got rid of most all that stuff, block, heads, basically a whole 383 to…..scrap. Sorry I know it’s like a dagger through the stomach but I said I’m not keeping this stuff and paying for a storage unit “just to have it”. Besides, after the car gets running if something happens where I need a new engine, I’m either getting rid of the car or just getting a crate for it.
Hope you mean a Crate engine Todd! I am sure no one to talk about letting a Road Runner sit! Plus mine has been outside yet! Darn train eduction! Anyway, I think the Mopar Fire has caught hold of me for real this time. After work today I worked on her! The fact I dd anything besides drinking is something! But, to get up and going outside (with cooler full of ) is a miracle!
Saturday plan is to pull the intake and valve covers and starting oiling the engine up!
See you all later, Ken

Well I got the plaster and Styrofoam top loose and broken up and piled on the plywood base. Tomorrow I'll bring the trash can in and grab the piles and stuff 'em in. All that should be left is the plywood top and the benchwork. There's only two legs underneath as the frame is attached to the main part of the layout and one wall. Getting that apart is going to be hard work. I think I'll wait until after the weekend. Looking at the calendar I may have to wait until after NEXT weekend. Say the 25th. This coming week is gonna be a bit busy. I have to mow the grass on the 18th. I'll need the 19th to recover from that. My father gets married on the 20th. No telling what's happening Friday and the weekend and I have a doctor appointment on the 24th. Lucky me!Here's the current progress photos:
