It's based on the game 'Colossal Cave Adventure'. The games are still in circulation today.

That's the one.  The original "Adventure" was written for a DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) PDP-11.  We had one of those at work, and a friend gave me a copy of Adventure.  Back then, these things were passed around for free.  There were no licenses, and maybe not even any copyrights.  The story I heard was that the authors wrote the game with the intention of using it to study how people approached the problem-solving required.

Being a software geek and an engineer, my approach was simple:  It was necessary to take it apart, see how it worked and make it better.  So, I took the source code (yes, my friend gave me that, too) and "ported" the program to a different computer, an HP 1000 from Hewlett Packard.  Once I did that, a process which taught me a lot about both computers, I added a couple of more rooms and puzzles.

This one silly game, full of trolls, dwarves and giants, led to the computer fantasy world we know today.

Hmmmmm.  Seems I've emerged from the dungeon, climbed the tower, opened the trap door and found myself at the top of the page.

The Zork series. It was out before Pac-Man. The first version of Zork was written in 1977. It's based on the game 'Colossal Cave Adventure'. The games are still in circulation today.

Afternoon folks!

Chloe, I'll have a cup of hot chocolate to warm me up a bit.

Currently gray, dull, and gloomy with a temp of 66°F under partly completely cloud filled skies and partly without any sunshine....

Went to my #1 Granddaughter's Kindergarten Graduation this morning.  Each child was recognized and got a certificate for comepleting Kindergarten and then All the classes sang some songs for us.  i will be going over tonight for pizza and cake to continue the "celebration..."  Tomorrow evening is the "Strawberry Festival" put on every year by my church. Also will be getting a delivery of 5 yards of topsopil. I will be supplying a small sound system for the MC to use.  Thursday is the R&GV RR Museum Monthly meeting (this month starts summer train rides for our meetings.  I will probably get to work train crew),  Saturday is the neighborhood yard sale and Granddaughter #1's birthday party.  Sunday is my sister's 70 th. birthday party at the Mexican Restaurant.  Busy week around here.......

I seem to be completely lost on exchanges between Mr. Beasley, Jeffrey, and a couple others....  "The compass is spinning in little circles????"  Some computer game I have no experience with I guess...  I used to be pretty good at Pac-man. Whistling

My son from Chicago arrives on Friday for a week's vacation with the family.  Meaning: My house is a complete mess and I better get cleaning it pronto!

Catch you all later!

Good morning. It's 79° with 89% humidity. The high will be 90°.

I got about three hours of sleep last night and I'm sore and stiff this morning. Today will literally be a day of rest. No layout work or computer work is planned.

  Morning All,

Currently it is 48 with an expected high of 88 with windy conditions this afternoon, creating a Red Flag Warning. Red Flag Warning, for those that do not know, is when conditions like high temps, low humidity, and strong winds make brush fires a real concern.

Second day of my two day vacation, and did not get much accomplished. Actually really just resting as I need it. Maybe do some scenery w**k later after paying bills.

  Prayers to all in need.

I never could play those computer games either.

Good morning, and a good one it is for Bruins fans once again.

soilwork, a belated Welcome Aboard Welcome and I feel your pain about watching the Bruins.  I've got to get up too early in the morning, so I only watched the first period last night.  I'm looking forward to Friday's game so I can watch until the end and not worry about the alarm clock.

We had heavy rain here in New England last night, and they're saying we'll get some more today.  Fine with me.  SWMBO is away, so I won't have to water the garden.  Maybe I should have put seed down, too, if it's going to rain for a few days.  Oh, well.  Maybe the seed I put down a month ago will finally do something if it gets we enough.

Good morning everyone!! I was sound asleep until the cat woke me up" Hello...Hello....pet me...I'm over here" thanks cat!!!! Not much going on today. Going to fax over my extension plans on my layout to Mianne for a quote on bench work for the extension. Later in the afternoon I start my lovely commute to the circus(I mean work). I leave to catch the bus at  6:30pm and arrive in Providence about 6:55 pm and then it's onto the 7:30 MBTA commuter train to RT. 128 where I get off. I walk about 20 mins to work and punch in for 9:00 pm. With any luck I will catch the Local CSX train hauling freight to the local industries. I hope everyone here has a pleasant and wonderful day!!

Morning coffee in the diner...

GOOD TUESDAY MORNING!!!

Today is Tuesday, June 18th, 2013!!!

I will light the prayer candles at 9 AM for those in need...

MAke it a GREAT DAY!!!

Today, as promised, here is the colorful history of the phrase "Read the Riot Act":

Meaning:

Reprimand rowdy characters and warn them to stop behaving badly

Dictionary:

read someone the riot act:

1}Fig. to give someone a severe scolding. The manager read me the riot act for coming in late. The teacher read the students the riot act for their failure to do their assignments
2} to speak angrily to someone about something they have done and warn them that they will be punished if they do it again
Usage notes: The riot act was a law made in 1715 which said how to deal with groups of twelve or more people who were causing trouble.
He'd put up with a lot of bad behaviour from his son and thought it was time to read him the riot act
3} to strongly warn someone to stop behaving badly Alice read Randi the riot act, telling her, If you don't like it here, you can just go back where you came from.” The secretary of state said she plans to read the riot act to the country's leaders during meetings next week

Since the early 19th century we have used 'read the riot act' as a figurative phrase to describe attempts to calm groups of rowdy people - along the same lines as  the phrase 'you noisy louts, don't you know there are people here trying to sleep?'. It wasn't always so. Had we been 'reading the riot act' in 1715 we would have noticed capital letters. At that date there was a real 'Riot Act' and it used to be read in public.

In English law the control of unruly citizens has usually been the responsibility of local magistrates. Any group of twelve or more that the authorities didn't like the look of could be deemed a 'riotous and tumultuous assembly' and arrested if they didn't disperse within an hour of the Riot Act being read to them by a magistrate. This seems a little harsh, but in 18th century England the government was fearful of Jacobite mobs who threatened to rise up and overthrow the Hanoverian George I. The fear was well-founded, as supporters of the deposed Stuarts did actually invade in 1715 and again in 1745. The 'Riot Act' was passed by the British government in 1714 and came into force in 1715. 'The Riot Act', which was more formally called 'An act for preventing tumults and riotous assemblies, and for the more speedy and effectual punishing the rioters' actually contained this warning:

"Our sovereign Lord the King chargeth and commandeth all persons, being assembled, immediately to disperse themselves, and peaceably to depart to their habitations, or to their lawful business, upon the pains contained in the act made in the first year of King George, for preventing tumults and riotous assemblies. God save the King."

The punishments for ignoring the Act were severe - penal servitude for not less than three years, or imprisonment with hard labor for up to two years.

After the Hanoverians were established in power the Riot Act began to fade into disuse. It was read to a group of demonstrating mill workers at Manchester Town Hall in 1842, but was used with decreasing frequency and had become a rarity by the 20th century. Surprisingly, the Act remained on the UK statute books into modern times and wasn't formally repealed until 1973. It was eventually superseded by the 1986 Public Order Act.

The first record of the figurative use of the phrase is in William Bradford's Letters, December 1819:

"She has just run out to read the riot act in the Nursery."

So, next time you read someone the "riot act", remember, they have grounds to object, as it was REPEALED in 1973!!!

Good Morning!

After a couple of days of heavy rainfall, we are enjoying fair weather again. Good for me, as I have to spend a considerable amount of time "on the road", collecting support for the party and candidates. Keeps me really busy, with no time for MRRing aand even thinking of it Sigh

Soilw*rk - a big Welcome to the Diner, the place to share your dreams, thoughts, joy and sorrow! We do talk about model railroading, once in a while...

Ulrich, that's a pretty great looking set of wheels there. I like your choice.  Is your brother off your back now?  Sure hope so.  Good luck as you go forward with your new adventure.

Johnboy - I do like the little car, though it does not have much oomph. Each time I wish it had a little more power, I keep telling me that driving it just about halved the cost involved. Hard to beat those 67mpg the onboard computer still shows - at least for a car that cheap.

Back to party w*rk!

Have a good one!

Whistling

Hi Gang,

I've been peeking in the side window quite a bit lately but have only posted once since getting back from holidays.  Just been too busy at work and then catching up on things around home here.

My Wife just took me out to the I-Max theater this evening , a belated Father's Day gift, to see the show "Rocky Mountain Express"  It is only about 45 minutes long but is it a great production.  The story of the Canadian Pacific building its way through the Sekirk Mountains and then the  Rocky Mountains.  If you happen to get the chance to see this do be first in line as it is top rate. The photography is unbelievable.

I have run all the country shown by Bus and Truck and know of, if not been to most of the places mentioned but I was blown away by the shots and sounds in and around #2816, the restored 464 in many of those places and even on the Lethbridge tressel.

I am in the middle of seven straight at work so I am off to bed here shortly. Sure hope I can get back to the train room before fall.

Interesting to see and hear of some of the changes being made by some of you at this time. Just like the real thing, always in a state of change. So it is prototypical.

Prayers and blessings to all in need.

Ulrich, that's a pretty great looking set of wheels there. I like your choice.  Is your brother off your back now?  Sure hope so.  Good luck as you go forward with your new adventure.

Jeffrey - how much rain did you get in your area today? I wasn't sure how far south this set of storms was coming through. And thanks for the good ol' text adventure example there. Yeah My choice would be "Turn on lantern"(or "Light lantern", depending on the interpreter).

I don't know how much it was but it was enough to soak me to the skin while I was mowing the yard. My version of the game asks you if you want to turn on the lantern. If you turn it on you'll probably be all right. If you don't something horrible that makes Final Destination look like a Boy Scout campout will probably befall you.

You have to excuse me. I'm busy going in several equally decisive directions at once, rather like Sheldon.

I have that same direction problem 5 nights a week!!! That's what happens when I'm at the circus I call work! The Bruins are looking good, I hope the can hold it until the end of the third. Well, back to the game!!

Evening, Chloe - I'll have one of those G**zilla-burgers and a side of cheesey fries, please, with a RBF to wash it all down. Thanks! Dinner

soilwork

Welcome to the Diner, Soilw*rk (we try to not unnerve some of the Diners by saying that w**k word that we associate with jobs or offices). Smile, Wink & Grin Tell us about your layout please, current or how the new expansion will be. Thanks! And have a beverage of your choice on me. Beer or Coffee or whatever your pleasure will be (and assuming that you're old enough for the appropriate beverage, of course).

Well (fairly full today, after about 5.75 inches of Storm in the space of 2-3 hours; the frogs are starting to get tired of treading water...), today at w**k was - fun (?) - got there just at 8, and learned we had some meeting with everybody in our section; immediate supervisor even came in though she was supposed to be off today Surprise Really fun, all right, and now the big cheeses say we will be having meetings every afternoon the last hour of the day (except today, it was more like hour and extra 15 minutes). Hope these don't get any longer than THAT...

But I saw the schedule for next month later in the morning, and we will have other people covering evenings and weekends (for extra pay, which we never got...). Good part is, though we're salaried, we won't get a pay cut. (I sure hope they aren't planning that, at least).

Galaxy, I figured that 'flyover' comment you gave the definition/history for, was a newer saying (at a minimum, within the last decade or two). Thanks for covering that (and Garry's phrase). Thumbs Up

Jeffrey - how much rain did you get in your area today? I wasn't sure how far south this set of storms was coming through. And thanks for the good ol' text adventure example there. Yeah My choice would be "Turn on lantern"(or "Light lantern", depending on the interpreter).

Yesterday, I emailed Robby and got some additional tips on weathering/fading the elevator. Now, with that and the other possible ideas I got from other Diners, I just have to figure out which one to try first. Hope whatever I go with, is the one that does the trick. I would not be looking forward to stripping paint off THAT elevator...

Garry, I hope the police recover(ed) your stuff quickly. Did Shelley tell you she answered one of your emails? Either it was her, or maybe the burglars...). And hopefully you didn't lose any of the really important stuff - your train items! Whistling (Don't mention I said that to Shelley, please!). So, which of those mowers do you use? Wink

I remember when my parents (after my brother & I had moved out, and Mom & Dad moved into a townhouse) place got broken into and their silverware (wedding present, I think it was) and a few other things got stolen. They got a settlement from the insurance company (don't think the police ever found the stuff), and bought some simple but nice-looking stainless steel flatware out of that. It looks nice (I got it later, after Mom died, and then later Dad died; my brother I guess wasn't interested in it, but I like the design)!

I'll be at the Rivet Counter for a bit before I head for home.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Jeff: That reminds me of a Big Bang Theory episode.

Sheldon: "Hit troll with ax! Hit troll with ax! Hit troll with ax! Man, this is one tough troll!"

I don't watch Big Bang Theory as I don't get that channel. But I do know that game Sheldon was playing. It's one of the Zork games. And after hitting the troll so many times he would have eventually killed it or it would snatch the ax and kill him. I've played that game many times. Great fun!

*

Soilwork: Welcome to the diner. You have to excuse me. I'm busy going in several equally decisive directions at once, rather like Sheldon.

*

Took the dog to the groomer this morning then came back and mowed the yard. That took quite a while as the grass was pretty thick in some places. I finished about 2:30 this afternoon and I was pretty wiped out. My father and his bride to be were going to town so I got a ride with them so I could make a bank deposit. Then they went to deliver their marriage license to the preacher who will be performing the ceremony, for free I might add. The love birds are tying the knot this coming Thursday evening, the 20th. I wish them all the best. Back to today. We then went to Fox's Pizza for dinner then picked the dog up from the groomer then went home. My father wanted me to help him unload a bunch of stuff from his car so I got the tractor and trailer and took it all in one load. Supplies and refreshments for the wedding guests. It was a BIG load. I didn't know you could put that much stuff in a G6. After I got a little rest I opened the Apple computer that went pop yesterday. There's a blown power regulator in the power supply. It still works but there's no guarantee the power coming out is correct. If it fluctuates up or down too much it won't be doing anything good for the boards or drives. I can get another power supply online but it's going to be a while before I get one. So my mothers old Apple went back into the closet and I brought out my old one which is nearly identical in appearance. Biggest visual difference is it has a three inch fan in the top cover right above the power supply. Internal differences are it has 128k from the factory, on board CP/M and it's set up to handle four disk drives at once, not just two. The drives are an even mix of Apple Disk II and Franklin 1000. No layout work today. It's gonna take me a day to recover from that mowing job. I was so wiped out I could hardly see for almost an hour. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be doing a lot better. Even a little better will be an improvement. I saw a coal train charging through town this afternoon. It was wasting no time. I didn't see the head end but there were two locos in the middle and two more on the end.

Well it's time for me to call it a night. I'm sore and stiff and I'm hoping I'll get more than a couple of hours of sleep. See y'all tomorrow.

Hiya Gang!Cowboy

Hiya Flo,,some diet Dr. Pepper please?

Been busy the last week, and I havn't gone back thru all the posts yet so excuse me if I missed something too important.

I did get a chance very briefly so scan stuff and I came upon this redneck definition. Surprise  Some people are offended by it? Confused Well,,, to each his own. Confused  The funny thing is that we found redneck goblets when we were shopping Saturday. In a store called Boscov's. Its a regional department store,,,,kind of like Bon-Ton or Belk.....usually a little nicer than Sears,,,,not as nice a Nordstrom or Macy's. Anyhoo, we were walking around the store and we found these......

Yes,,red Solo cups with cut crystal bases, for $4.99 each...and redneck wine stoppers (a screwdriver with a cork glued to the end) for $9.99. Laugh  What next?? Laugh

The Sunday I did hear from all 5 of the boys Big Smile, and I got this shirt from SWMBO....

OK  I get it,,sarcasm right? Huh?

Curt Webb

Good Evening Again,

I was trying to do some rough grade calculations to see what the projected addition will be on the one side. As I understand it the formula is height divided by length. So if  I have 2 inches of height over 60 inches that would be a 3.3% grade...Is that true?

Thanks in advance.

Yes thats right Curt, kinda.. to get the gradient,,,,
Grade % = (Rise ÷ slope length) x 100
333333  =  ( 2÷60 ) x 100
It's a little steep, can you make it longer?Whistling
Well I'm off to do some more reading (why are the italics stuck on?) and catching up. I hope everyone had a great Fathers day,,,,we'll be  back soon!

Good Evening Again,

I was trying to do some rough grade calculations to see what the projected addition will be on the one side. As I understand it the formula is height divided by length. So if  I have 2 inches of height over 60 inches that would be a 3.3% grade...Is that true?

Jeff: That reminds me of a Big Bang Theory episode.

Sheldon: "Hit troll with ax! Hit troll with ax! Hit troll with ax! Man, this is one tough troll!"

Anyway, hello.

Another 10 hour day for me. Thankfully the weather was decent, so I was able to get some lots of outside work done. Got slightly burnt, but not much. Tired, but better now.

Evening All,

Did not do much today other than sweeping the floor. I have been looking at the layout for what will probably be the next major project. I am looking at putting a turnout on the back outer loop (elevated) and run it around the outside of the TT area and bringing it back in on the outermost yard lead, in effect making that lead another part of the outer main.

Of course this will be after the upstairs floor id completed....so no time soonSad

Soilwork- Welcome to the diner.

Todd- We had a huge amount of food yesterday. Everybody went home with their left overs. I finished off the swiss steak while MOH is at the sewing club tonight.

Here are some more photos from the trip to PA.

Galaxy .... Thanks for the write up about the proof is in the pudding. .... How about "The devil is in the details"/

We had a theft at our house, and a sheriff deputy was here to investigate. Stuff like that angers me. I never understand stealing.

You're welocme. "The Devil is in the details" is a simple idiomatic phrase that simply means the details, no matter how small, need to be paid attention to. ANd/or that NOT paying attention to such details means failure later.

It is actually derived from the phrase "the God is in the details". It started at earliest as the "God" phrase in the mid 1800s attributed to the  Frenchman Flaubert. It appears a few times in the 1800s. It is noted by google, however,  that the "devil" phrase doesn't actually appear in print {to be thusly dated for origin of the "devil" phrase} until circa 1975!!!

Sorry, Garry, nothing much more on that phrase!

Watch tomorrow for "read the riot act"!

Sorry to hear of your loss.....what , exactly, did they steal? I, neither, have eve had  aneed for stealing. If I don't have it and someone does, I don't care to take it and "make it mine".

Jeff ...... If the Dane is too aggressive, it needs to go "night night" permanently.

Believe me, if it was up to me he'd be taking a dirt nap already. It's my nieces dog and it's up to her and her other half. For now he's scheduled to have his boy parts removed forever. That worked very well with their pit bull. He's about as aggressive as a cream puff. Total 180 from previous. Of course they had it done after his breeding value had passed. The dane is past that point as well.

Good afternoon, DIners....... I'll have a bowl of pudding, please. Hold off on the proof.

Ray ..... Sounds like you had a good day in the caboose.

Paul .... I'm glad you had a good ay with the family.

Soilwork .... Welcome to the DIner.

Mr. B .... You mentioned tracks for a tanning company and a Railway Express terminal. Are the buildings already made and awaiting the track?

Tom  ...... That is an interesting old passenger car on the NS. I wonder what they will do with it.

JimCG  ...... You are doing a good job making the grain elevator.

Jeff ...... If the Dane is too aggressive, it needs to go "night night" permanently.

Galaxy .... Thanks for the write up about the proof is in the pudding. .... How about "The devil is in the details"/

I had fathers day calls from kids and grandkids yesterday. That was nice.
