Packer, I see that N scale switching layout idea. I'd recommend Kato NW2, Atlas trainman GP15-1 for switching locos if you're doing the BN.

I'm thinking a GP7/9.... But IDK how I'd change the step wells like i've been changing the ones on my BN units.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

not sure either it'd take a lot of skill(that I lack), if you need temporary power and cars you know who to holler at! Big Smile

lol. Most BN geeps eventually got converted to the GN standard of 4 steps. The easiest ones to model would be the ex-NP ones that hadn't yet been converted to 4-steps. IIRC, all the conversions were done in the late-70s to early 80s.

I just don't know what can be done in 21 x 39 inches

Good evening ....

Terry ... Nice layout photo! ... By the way, I think you said, but how far north are you in Wisonsin?

Ray .... Are you wornout from today's caboose duty?

How about a 1948 Pontiac since nobody was interested in the Fords or Plymouths?

Z Scale comes to mind if you don't mind watching your trains while wearing magnifier lenses. I ran Z Scale for a little while in the 80's. That didn't last long. N Scale seemed immense by comparison.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, a cup of decaf, and a hot fudge sundae would really, really hit the spot right now!

Man!  Am I beat...  Long, but fun, day out at the museum.  I drove in the parking lot about 9:35 AM, just after a few other crew members arrived on property, signed in both on the mandatory crew sheet and the museum volunteer log, got my radio and waited for what to do next.  Found gthey already had the caboose open so I oput my gear into Erie C-254 and claimed her as my charge for the day!  By the time I got on the caboose the engineer already had the 80 tonner 1654 started and warming up.  After checking out a few items that we needed like the guest log (just records the # of passengers each trip) I went back in the depot to find a blank copy of the form...  Weren't any!  We used the last copy last fall and no one thought to run more...  I finally suggested, after 3 of us spent 15 minutes checking every file cabinet and drawer in the office) that I just keep the stats on a ruled piece of paper.  The Conductor agreed and we all went back over to the train.  The engineer and conductor for the morning called a crew meeting to go over safety and procedures for the day.  We found that no one had certified the track being in gauge for our first run of the year, so we decided to leave early with extra crew to run a slow trip up the tracks and make sure everything was in proper order. At that point we have over an hour before the first official run of the day and figured we would have some time to relax at the upper end of the line...

We all boarded the train to take our assigned places to check the track and the engineer climbed into the cab ready to move the train.  He blew the horn for the move, decided he didn't need one of the engines up and running on the 80 tonner and went to switch it off whereupon both diesels immediately died!  I was on the front porch of C-254 and looked up at the engineer who said...  "Oh!  This is not good!!!"  He tried to start engine #1 and all it did was go click....  Then he said, This is definitely NOT good!!!"  It seems that 1654 has not been charging the batteries well or the batteries haven't been holding a charge well....  So!  The extension cord comes out and we fiddle with the batteries for 20 minutes...  We would have just started the 45 tonner or LV 211 but 211 is in the shop for a new water pump, and the 45 tonner (Beebee Station) was buried behind a whole string of equipment that couldn't be easily moved before we needed to start.  Luckily old 1654 decided to come to life after the charge and ran flawlessly the rest of the day, but I think will be getting new batteries or some charging work done on her this week!

Got up to Mi9dway with just enough time to !: certify the track was OK, and 2. get Midway opened up before the first trolley arrived with close to 50 visitors...  That gave us standing room only for the first trip back down the line...  i had just told those standing that they absolutely needed to maintain three points of contact just about the time we heard the 3 horn blasts signalling the train would be departing (backing down the line).  I was ignored by a few patrons as usual...  Engineer let her move a bit hard taking up coupler slack fast and C-254 gave a good solid G-force as she moved...  A couple of the passengers lost there balance and fell onto others!  No one was hurt and I calmly said, "That's why!"  At the other end every single person on my caboose followed my instructions on how to safely detrain...

Rest of the day was uneventful and low in attendance for opening day.  Most trips were less than a dozen passengers.  Not good for the bottom line, but I did have fun!

I do like playing with the 1/1 scale trains!!! Smile, Wink & GrinLaugh

Terry, glad to hear you son is back stateside!

Hope you all have a restful night!

It's been an uneventful day. I spent some time going through some old data CD's and DVD's looking for some software. Some of it won't run under Windows 8 but most of it will. One of those that does work is RRTRAINS 2000. Eventually I'll go through and make a new inventory of all my locos and rolling stock. The old inventory is woefully outdated. I also have to get around to printing up some cab numbers for my locos. That means first color matching the paint for the background color on the paper. Have you ever tried scanning a loco to get a good color match in MSPaint?  Not exactly my idea of fun. I have some clear and white Testor's decal film but my old HP 3930 Deskjet printer isn't the best at printing on that stuff and the results are entirely hit and miss, mostly miss. Usually the ink cracks badly as it dries. Tonight I'm listening to an old Niel Diamond CD I have. Viva Las Vegas.

Well, time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Ray: Thinking of you when I selected tonight's photo.

Evening, Flo, I'd like the roast beef special, with asparagus, a baked potato with butter and sour cream, and a glass of Finger Lakes wine, please. Thank you.

Hey, how come Vinnie looks a bit "on edge" tonight (y'might say, with an "itchy finger"...Surprise) tonight? You say I should ask JaBear? Hmm....

Terry - I knew that was the 'before' photo - I was trying to figure if the place/area (where you were going to put those trees) was back in that hill area (which in your photo was to the left of the train standing) or if you meant they were going into the area between the train and that highway next to the tracks. So, which area did you mean? Ah, I just got to your "after" photo - you were talking about the between-the-RR-and-the-highway area! And EXCELLENT job with the trees (and the placement of them)!! BowBow Yet more great w**k there!

SP&S Garry, yep, I hear you. I got (at a good price) a Digitrax DB150 (the booster that comes with their bigger sets, and the power supply for it), but the cost of the radio throttle and the panel (that you plug the throttle into to acquire a loco) are holding me up, also. So I plan to wire and put in blocks for DC now, with them set up to be readily converted over when I can afford the other parts of the DCC puzzle. (Besides, I figure I'll let the early adopters figure out the bugs and such, and then all we need to do is to ask them, since they'll be the DCC gurus by then, right? Smile, Wink & Grin

JaBear, so what's the deal with Vinnie today? (Don't ask? Um, okay...).Whistling Sorry for any (unintended) slight there, mate! Oops I shouldn't have made that mistake, since I do recall your (ahem...cough..) clarification of the whereabouts of your location. Wink I don't think I've told you before, but I like your signature! Thumbs Up

Ken, it sounds like you've been tending to a few gremlins on the layout. Good show, and hope you continue to make the progress with those cars lurking in the tunnel! Will your store be closed on Memorial Day (or date of observance, for the traditionalists who recall that far back...)?

Curt - your trip sounds like it was... (wait for it...) legendary! (okay, I'll probably hear from the lawyers tomorrow...) As you said, can't think of much of anything to make it better. Hope you can post some of your favorite photos after you get time to look through them.

Todd, a lot of the time, I use a white primer for my structure kits - but actually, on the Merchants' Row, I used a flat "Brick Red" (paint or primer, not for sure there). So I must be in good company, if you forget about the same sort of things. Thumbs Up Oh, on your last thing, I don't have a garage, so guess where my stuff winds up? Whistling (If a hint helps, I only have a 10X10 storage unit other than my apartment...)

David P. - so long as your layout does the trick for you, it's the right size! Keep in mind, some like almost-prototypical length mainline runs, others like industrial switching in one downtown section/district, some like coal train drags, others enjoy prairie RR's serving multiple grain elevators. There are great things about each (and trade-offs for each, as well). How've you & the layout been doing? And the business, also?

Hey, Vincent - if you find a place that carries that black styrofoam, let us know where, okay? (Of course, if it's from ExactRail, we may not be able to afford it, but...). Wink Man, I think your place's schedule-makers take the cake, for sure! Thumbs Down I don't think it would be possible to mess it up much worse! Wonder who they'll give that task to, once Daniel & Jeannene drop the ball the one last time?

Paul, I once had an idea like that about using the white beaded foamboard for something. Found out about the same kind of things you mentioned. Oops Any of it that I use nowadays, I take outside (on a non-windy day) to cut... (and that isn't very often at all!)

Our weather today was pretty warm (but I was only out in it once or twice, knowing it was hot and humid...). I think we got to the upper 80's (88 or 89 F, depending on which town/city we're talking about in the area). Didn't hear what the dreaded heat index was. I think we may get some rain through later tonight (but those in SW Missouri and Oklahoma/NE Ark. better watch out, it sounds like).

Talked with the landlord the tail end of this last week (about the dying fridge in my apartment - I think it's the original one), and tomorrow they're gonna see about getting me a new one. So in the few years I've been here, we've replaced: the air conditioner (older 220 v. for a newer, remote-controlled 110 v.), the faucet in the kitchen (and the squirter hose thingee), the shower/tub controls (both the shower head and the controls/lever thing). Luckily for them, I'm still here and paying rent...

Zzz..Huh?! Oh, sorry there - I got a full tummy with dinner, and kinda dozed off there a bit from it.

CB&Q Garry, have you had time lately to get much MRR'ing done, with your doctor's trip and keeping tabs on Gus and his progress?

[Edit]: Jeffrey - that SL&O billboard is the one I was asking about earlier. Glad you posted it. Thumbs Up

Prayers for those healing up (or in need of healing), in need of comfort and/or a good night's rest. And we might add a prayer for better w**k schedules for several Diners (and for calmer co-w**kers...).

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G.

I found some online. $20 bucks for a 1/2" x 24" x 108" piece. That's a better deal than the white stuff I bought (and cut earlier) for 10 bucks for a 1/2"x24"x48" I got from ACmoore:

http://www.reliablehardware.com/blackrigidpolyethylenefoam-12thick.aspx

I never did find my razorsaw, so I took the styrofoam I had and cut it with a handsaw. Worked fine. I have all the blocks cut out for my 21 Thrall 4000 Gons (20 MDC, 1 Athearn RTR), and maybe enough left over for my 13 PS 4000 Gons (all Walther's). I just need to get the hot glue gun from my sister to glue the wood load frames together.

As far as the schedule, I don't think Jeanne wants the scheduling duites again, and I'm pretty sure when Daniel screw up it'll go back to Donnavan. If that happens, I'll likely get saturdays off again.

 Evening Folks

Flo, another Beer please and keep them coming!

 Work Front, my Typical Day.

1 Services Manger Stole my brake job, rewrote the ticket in his name. I have proof I will add.

2 Evil Tyler threw some F bombs at me and pretty much called me a F idiot and rewrote a $40.00 + commission ticket in his name. Now he may be right but let me ask car people this.

If a tire is called a LXT L being Load, X being Extra what would you think T stands for? Whistling

3 A/C in the showroom not working worth a dam. Have a nasty heat rash going, and I will leave it at that! Bang Head

4 Closed at 6:00 got the last customer out at 7:30, left at 7:50 pm. But, it was my ticket and made me some good change. So while I would have loved to leave at say 6:30, I cannot complain! Smile, Wink & Grin

Jim, I was able to get the tunnel clear with little effort this time, I lucked out!

David P Good to see you back! Hows being a VP treating you? Yes my layout is good sizes, around 175 sq feet give or take. Now if you where referring to the diagram I posted, it was just a idea I was working on. If things work out for me with BoS here is the layout I want to build.

4 inches short of 2 feet wide and 3 inches longer than 4 feet, you could get a bit the cuts would have to be a bit short. I'll ask a fellow BN N scaler who has far more knowledge of models than I do, about what one could do to get a decent temporary close as possible stand in GP7/9. I'll also Ask the Nscale.org guys about a switching layout in 21" and 39".

Jim, agreed I'll let the rest of them fight with it while I enjoy my DC block control.

Edit: Atlas makes GP7/9 models with some detailing they make great BN models. I have a site with BN Geeps, and I have tons of BLMA parts so if you need some I can send them your way when you detail your models.

Good Morning Gang!

Pretty bad weather over here. It has been raining on and off for the last few days. Typical holiday weather in my neck of the woods.

I hardly find the time for anything else than political work and it is not even campaign time! We still need to go through the registration procedure for the upcoming election. As it seems, for each hurdle you have overcome, ten new ones pop up Sigh

Lessons learned since I entered politics:

  • When talking to the press, use few words to say nothing.
  • When talking to your constituency, use lots of words to say very little.
  • When attending a party meeting, don´t expect to meet friends there - the enemy is from within!

I am still not sure I like this!

Blessings to all and a prayer for those in need!

Ray, sounds like "Mr Murphy" was in attendance, still glad you had a fun day. Thought you would have suggested the virtues of a solar powered "trickle" battery charger Big Smile though to be fair , I don't like to leave batteries on the charge unattended.

JimRCGMO, no offence taken either, don't recollect where my signature "quote" actually came from.  I have always tried to live as an optimist but find as I'm getting older I find that I'm now more of a "cynical optimist" Laugh'

Isn't Google Maps good value, in the space of 10 minutes I've managed to "visit" Williamsville, The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum, and Cape Girardeau, I take it that is a rather large cement plant, south of town Jim ??

Thoughts and Best Wishes to All that need them.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and a sweet roll please, thanks.

Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 4pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 88. Chance of precipitation is 60%. This is from the National Weather Service.  Locals have it raining most of the day, as does the Weather Channel and Accuweather. In fact right now we are at an 85% chance for rain at 7am.  Hmmmm.

David- Good to see you!

Terry- Glad he’s home safe! Great looking trees by the way.

Ken- Well, don’t know. If it was LTX or XLT I’d say LT usually stands for Light Truck. But since it’s LXT, my guess would be Touring?

Bear- Flat?LaughLaughLaugh If it were any flatter……I could wave at you. Well, if it weren’t for the Great Wall of China. I understand it was built halfway around the world to keep the Irish from taking over the worldWink.  And yes I love Google Earth too. You can drive right round.

Welp, what I do today depends on the rain situation. It looks like it could just rain cats and dogs here any second but so far drier than a popcorn f*rt. One thing is certain, the Church’s deposits need made and the bills need paid so first things fir….wait!!! What the deuce?! Is that a lawn mower I hear??!! Yes by jove, it is! Doesn’t that wacko know the transplants in this town have banded together and got a noise ordinance imposed? Before you were just polite and thoughtful of others on your own. And if you got caught up in something and had to fire up the old noise, well no one really complained because you usually only did it only if you had too. Now……Confused   Yuppies.

Forgive me some fatherly pride.  When our daughter Annie crossed the stage to get her Bachelor of Science degree, they added summa cum laude after her name.

The whole graduation weekend was delightful.  We had perfect weather, and they kept the ceremony moving so that 1500 students got their diplomas in 2 1/2 hours, processions and speeches included.  The keynote address, by Maine's Senator Angus King, was brief and very entertaining.  He described "politics" as a Greek word, with "poly" meaning "many," and "tics" meaning "small, blood-sucking insects."  Annie's boyfriend cringed at that, because, as a bio major, he knew that tics are actually arachnids, having 8 legs, not 6 like insects.

Nothing planned for today except to lay back and take it easy. I'll watch some movies and later I may get around to doing something on the layout.

Jeffrey, I did a tribute to Wolfgang, too....

Good Morning,

Long weekend up here, Victoria Day, and naturally it is raining as it has been since Saturday morning. At least the grass is turning green. Would have been nice if the city had picked up the yard waste on Friday as they were supposed to do as we now have a lot of wet paper bags up and down the street. As often is the case the new garbage company that started last year is far worse than the last one, in spite of the 'new and improved' claims. Up until about 10 years ago the city actually did it and the service then was terrific. They even put an old sofa a neighbour put out into the truck. Now everything must go into the plastic bin or you keep it. Rant over.

ONR fan, it was a small hardware store on the main street but I think it closed in about 1997.  The couple who ran it were elderly, about the same age as I am now, so maybe they were just young seniors. Anyway I do remember it as a very pretty little town assuming we are talking about the Millbrook near Peterborough. I have a U2g and agree with you that it is a beautiful loco. It is very picky about trackwork so if yours runs around your layout without problems, then you did a good job with the tracks. Mine is #6232 so it is near the last of the production run. It is actually the second one I bought as I had to return the first due to running problems. There was a major lurch in the drive.

Well not much on the agenda today. Likely we will finish watching the trip video as we just have the Cape Town portion left to see.

Jim, you were asking about photos. I  don't have a Photobucket account but if you would like to see some I could just e-mail them to you. I think I still have your address.

Garry, I do like the photos of the cars. My grandfather had a '47 Ford which is the same as the '46. I remember it well even though I was only 5 when he died. Not surprising he liked Fords as he worked for CN police and his name was Charlie. I vaguely remember him taking me to the Transcona round house when I was about 4 and being a little frightened by the steam locos. That would have been in about '51. Now I'm about the same age as he was then.

Think I'll go run my Pacific a little today as it does need to get a break-in. I have it pulling a Rovos Rail coach that I bought on the trip. A South African passenger car does look a little strange behind a GTW engine but so what.

See you soon,

CN Charlie

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a bowl of organic Pumpkin Flax Granola with some blueberries, skim milk, and lots of dark roast coffee in my R&GV RR mug.  Please and Thank You Ma'am!

Mr. Beasley, nice work on the 0-6-0T.  Is that the Bachman?

Jeffrey, enjoyed seeing the billboard for the SLOW this morning! Big Smile

I was going to tell you last night but figured I had used enough bandwidth for the day, that we had a coupl visitors who came quite a ways to visit the museums yesterday.  One couple was all the way from the West coast of the US.  They had come to RIT to get their son who is a student there and happened to read about the museums opening for the year.  Had a good chat with them waiting for the trolley to come.  The other was a gentleman from Germany who is spending a week visiting the area.  His English was excellent, but I recognized the accent right off (sounds a lot like Ulrich...).  Didn't ask him what part of Germany he was from.  Didn't think to until he had gotten back on the trolley at Midway.  He found the differences between railroads over here and what he sees at home to be fascinating.  I think he was amazed at how far behind we are on this side of the pond, but really enjoyed riding on our antique equipment.

Oh, I did mention to the crew that I probably had more than enough battery in the PiP to start the loco yesterday....  I was given the "unless you have something useful, shut up" look. Smile, Wink & GrinLaugh  The former Museum president (one of the younger guys who graduated from RIT) who is now the Operations Supt. did see me as I left and was walking to my car which was the last one in that parking lot.  He grinned and said, Oh, the Prius is yours?!"  Then said he got a big charge out of the bumper decal!  His Dad has a very large Solar array in his back yard, so he wanted to know how my panels were doing now that sunny weather has arrived.

Today I get to see my doctor for my 6 month check up.  Hopefully everything will be found to be good with no major changes needed!  Do say a prayer for me though.  Have a class reunion sub-committee meeting tonight here in Geneva, and most of the rest of the day will be spent printing programs for the MLK Scholarship Dinner.

Have a great day!

 Morning All,

Currently it is 45 with an expected high of 70 under pleasant skies.

Mid-day shift today, so I am going to try and stop by H. D. and get the correct foam after w**k. I already tore out the bead foam and it is in the garbage bin out front.

After all the crawling around under the benchwork yesterday, I was kind of beat, so I watched the HBO miniseries "The Pacific". Entertaining set of dvd's. I have had them for some time, just never got around to watching them.

   Prayers to all in need.

Ray - did he sound like this:

"Vee hav vays of making you talk!" (Herr von Flick in the British WWII comedy series "Allo, allo")?

Folks in the UK complain about nasal American accent... Laugh

Listening To Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu chanting for the 2006 Wahine Kahiko {older women} group  Found him doing it on the tube.Love his voice, chants and tunes.

Well erm

Calculating Another trip to Hawaii...{wouldn't you know} for the fall...IF and that's a big IF  IF MOH works both part time jobs and I save like mad, we could go for my Birthing Day Celebration.

BUT, I know how/where to get the best deals.  and the trip planning was all in fun, really...maybe next year, THOUGH it looks like we could do it for about what we did in 2005, {about $500 more}. AND it was a bargain in 2005 all the way around. WHO says Hawaii is expensive?

IF we go,we would take Train nut friend and his wife...IF they can afford it...He thinks he'd like to retire to FL or Hawaii {she said "you'd have to take me there first" about Hawaii}

MOH would love to go for the HULA competitions next March/April- would be nice, I'd enjoy it too, but getting in/there at that time is like trying to get tickets to a popular concert that is sold out.

So dunno. March may still be iffy traveling we were lucky in 2005 the weather was only rainy in Chicago, and  light snow/no snow in NY. And of course beauteous in Honolulu. So we lucked out real well.

Well I need to dig out some train stuff {now that I packed it away earlier this year to please MOH} to send to JEFFREY...He may be happy  to get the stuff...have some track to send to someone else  if the wasps ever settle down,

Well erm..

Hi Guys,

Wow its a warm one out today, 84 but feeling like 95. Funny I had the furnace on last week and today am seriously debating turning the central air on,lol. When the late afternoon sun hits the front of the house the temp goes up big time So I will see how warm it is later on.

I have spent the last few days outside in the garden and have got a lot done. I have been off since Thursday. In addition to getting the yard work complete I managed to avoid getting a sunburn and finished up weathering a gondola, I have about ten hours weathering into the thing.I have come in for the day though and plan on just watching the Jays game and doing some laundry.
