Jeff: Looks like it was very nice service for your mom. Im sure there were alot of good stories and fun times shared today. Thanks for sharing the pics

Well I just had for the first time in I think 5 or 6 years a mcdonalds hamburger and fries. Wasn't bad but wasn't great at the same time. I have been just looking through some old MR magazines. I enjoy every now and then grabbing a stack and thumbing through them.

Evening All,

I started my coal mine project by clearing the area. Because of the awkward location I will have to build the mountain off layout then place it on it.

My friend was able to go home today and says he feels great.

Tomorrow morning I am meeting Phil for coffee.

Jeff- It looks and sounds like your family had a wonderful service for your Mother.

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.

Afternoon guys

I messed with tmy 2 BLI C30-7s as of late. I installed Hi-tech details anticlimbers (notched to fit around the handrails) to them and painted the cut levers black with white ends. Unfortunately the green paint I used on the anti-climbers is coming off. I noticed they had different sideframes. One has outside high brake cylinders and the other has inside low brake cylinders. I'll have to call BLI and see if I can get one of them swapped to the low inside type. (Atlas U30Cs have the right sideframes, but they have circular mounting pins, BLI's is square.)

Ulrich, Sorry to hear about your dad. The 100 MPH gusts don't suprise me much. We had some close to that here yesterday.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Well the memorial service for my mother went very well. There were a lot of old friends there to share their thoughts and memories. It was a very good turnout. My father had a lot to say, sharing 57 years of memories takes a while. I got a few photos to share also.

The podium for the speakers:

Her graduation picture from Troup High School, 1955. Yeh Tigers! She and my father met at the high school prom. It was being held in Jacksonville Texas at the Liberty Hotel ballroom. He was in the army then stationed at Camp Chaffee (now Fort Chaffee) Arkansas and was hitchhiking home to Austin Texas to see his parents. He stopped at the Liberty hotel for the night. He cleaned up and went to see what was happening in the ballroom. The entrance-way to the ballroom is where they met. They got married in December 1956.

Her final resting place at the Veteran's Memorial cemetery. She's on a hilltop where she can keep an eye on things.

*
Now to introduce you to my great-nephew John. A 5 year old train nut. The kid is insane about trains! He's seen photos and videos of what I have so I'm his favorite person. I think I caught him in the middle of a dance step in this photo.

Coffee refill please. Running on fumes here, trying to stay awake for evening critter rounds.

Have been in touch with the Beyer Garratt folks and they do not have the model in stock that I would want, so big sigh of relief here.Laugh That said, they expect a shipment sometime next month that will have one.Whistling

Hope everyone is doing well. Healing thoughts to all those in need.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Hi Guys

We got a fair bit of snow last night here. Spent the morning shoveling snow. I will spend the rest of the weekend working on the layout and other model railroad projects before I start my new job next week. I have orientation on Monday and then start Wednesday night. I'm going to try to finish up some small model railroad things because I don't know how long it will take me to get used to a night shift as I have never done it before. Im looking forward to the Super Bowl also on Sunday.

Sunney 77 today, this is the warmest day of the week though.

T March you must be computer knowlegable to have the little circle degree symbol in your post on page two. I think I have it written down somewhere how to do it but it would take me awhile to find it if I even have it. I don't remember seeing it before in the forums.

Today I am BBQeing 18 1/2 lbs of chicken, I do this perodically, by the time I have it all put away, mostly I freeze it, and cleaned up the day will be over for me.

can I come over? I'll bring some trains and track. Big Smile

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a couple of those Pineapple upside down swirly roll thingies and lots of dark roast coffee to wash it down with.  Thank you Ma'am.

So we ended up in Hahwareya I guess.  Nice morning swim to get here too...  Actually all I could see outside this morning when I got up was white!  Couldn't see the tree 50' away from the window.....It has since cleared up a bit, but we seem to be in a Lake Effect band today.  Got up a few minutes early to check on Blackie.

Speaking of my cats...  Blackie doesn't like the chicken flavored Pill Pockets and won't eat one even without a pill hidden in it.  Manét ate the one I tried to give to Blackie as soon as I put it down on the floor.  I will see if the vet has any of the salmon flavor ones and try that with Blackie.  I had to stick my finger with the pill half way down Blackie's throat yesterday and this morning, but he did swallow it (after several tries).  Since the pill bottle says to give with food, I offered him some of his new food which both of them love, from my hand.  He eagerly ate it right up and then hobbled out to the kitchen to ask for more.  So both cats got some food early today.

Ulrich, my prayers for your dad, but most of all for you and Petra during this time.  I know you know that you have done you very best for them!  To everything there is a season.....  Peace, my friend.

Barry, take care of yourself with the cold!  There is some nasty stuff going around so don't hesitate to seek medical help....  Ah, I'm preaching to the choir again!  My sister brought a cold home with her from Ghana....

Rob, thanks for the cat food suggestion.  I will look into it but would not get anything new for the boys without the vet saying it would be right for them.

So who are these birds, ah, did he say he has Ravens around that Karl is crowing about?  Huh? oh!  Stupid Bowl Sunday this week...  I see.  Nope, will probably not be anywhere were I will be subjected to the Idiot Box at that time.  Sounds like a great time to do some model railroading though.  My son won't even get a chance to watch it live this year as he volunteered to get some overtime at work and go in the night shift.  He will be w*rking 24 of the 48 hours this weekend he says.  Hope the roads are good and he stays safe.  He is getting too old to be doing these 16 hour days.  So did the Bills make it this year?  Didn't think so.....

Jeffrey, sending good thoughts your way.  May today be bittersweet in your memories.  Enjoy your family and friends!

Gee, I took so long to type this that the sun is trying to shine now...  WOW!

Later!

Ulrich .... I'm sad to hear about your Dad's situation.

Garry, I am at a point at which it starts to pull me down. In the last days, I had as much as 30 calls from my dad and my mom, most of them from my mom, who had forgotten she had called me a few minutes earlier. I have a hard time to stay calm. Whenever the phone rings, I fear for the worst, my BP jumps up and my heart rate skyrockets. There is not a night I find a proper sleep. Don´t know for how much longer I will be able to cope with the situation.

Talking of the curly-ques, they will be most likely banned here pretty soon. LED technology has made a step up development and prices for LED lamps have fallen below the mark of those mecury evaporating "energy-savers".

Edit: Oh, no! Tops again. Dinner is on me, folks!

Good morning (I think) ..... 3 days ago it was 65 F. Now it is 16F.

Galaxy .... Thanks for posting the information about Hawaiian rails. I'll look at it later today.

Ulrich .... I'm sad to hear about your Dad's situation.

Jeff ...... Blessings to you, your Dad and your family for the memorial.

Todd .... Talk about clothes belong to the female gender. This house has his and her closets with the master bedroom. That did not last long. Quickly, they became hers and hers closets. I keep my stuff in a guest bedroom closet. Guess whose clothes are in the other guest bedroom closets. Whistling

Ulrich is having bad weather. James in Oz had some bad weather. Fear not, international friends Down Under, Europe, Canada, etc. The United States Congress is solving the global weather problems, and as a result we must buy only curly-que light bulbs. I'm doing my part because, yesterday, I paid good money to replace emissions equipment in Shelley's car. Huh? Let us know when you notice the improved weather. conditions.

In WPF I posted the same one I posted here with the 2-6-6-2 and the 0-6-0. On the layout, I am working on some scenery.

Cheers.

Morning, Zoe - I'll have a waffle with maple syrup and two strips of bacon, glass of OJ, another of milk, and a Rio Grande   mug of coffee, please. Yep, a bit hungry this morning. Dinner

Trent, good to see you in the Diner - sent you a message through the Forum on a possible source for that Athearn/Santa Fe station to check. At least, an alternative to deBay place...

Garry, I just figured that the Sundown shops had gone to a new paint scheme on that 0-4-0...Whistling

Hawaii, eh? Don't know about those pineapple-macadamia nut muffins, though. I might go for pineapple muffins, though. Huh?

JaBear - so even a streamlined double sea kayak might take a while, eh? Smile, Wink & Grin

This morning it was a wind chill of 3 F here (not as bad as Todd and our Diners north of Cape probably had), with air temp of 13 F. Cold enough for me. 8 mph winds had a little edge to them (at least it was a dry cold, eh, Barry? Wink). Supposed to reach 30 F for our 'high' temp today. Nothin' compared to our NOTB Diners in Canada - they'd still be in short sleeves, or maybe (maybe) a light jacket at most...Whistling At least our winds are supposed to die down today, as the high pressure dome moves our way.

Before I pulled out from my apartment's parking lot this morning, I had to put the renewal stickers on my car's license plates. Hard to peel them from the paper backing in gloves, though. This year, I got the 2-year renewal. Figured since I now have to get inspections for my car, at least I can skip a year more until next time I need THAT. (In our state, until the car is X number of years old, they don't require inspection for license plates/renewals)

Ulrich - 100 mph, with gusts to 112?IndifferentWow From the radar pic you showed, I'm guessing they are coming from the south? Ah, looks like from your later post, they come from the northwest. Stay inside, definitely! Sorry to hear about how your Dad's doing. AngelAngel will continue.

Jeff, we will be thinking about you and the family this morning. As Karl said, may you remember the pleasant and the funny times with your mother for long after your sorrow. AngelAngel

Barry, dake care of dab code, y'hear? And lots of fluids (chicken soup, juices, hot toddy, whatever...Smile, Wink & Grin)

Karl, I am just guessing, but I'd say you don't have any preferences for the SuperBowl winner, right? Whistling

I'll be at the Rivet Counter, eating my breakfast. Prayers for those in need of our various kinds.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape G.

Strong winds like that are not uncommon in my neck of the woods. The usually hit us after you folks in the east of the US had a bad storm. The take their way over Greenland, refuel and than dump the load onto northern Germany. People have centuries of experience how to protect their property from strong winds, so damage is little.

Here is what I do when we have those north-westerners:

A family in our neighborhood built a home from a kit imported from Canada. It failed to receive the building inspector´s approval and had to be taken down again -. a costly experiment for the folks.

Mornin Gang!Cowboy

Flo my dear, can I get 2 eggs over easy, with scrapple AND bacon and some wheat toast? Oh and some coffee in a Ravens mug?

Oh and girls, The coconut shells and grass skirts look great!!Stick out tongueMischief

Woke up to a bed sheet of white this morning! Well, its only about an inch, so I can't call it a blanket!Smile, Wink & Grin It's a bit nippy out there! My sister is driving up from NC today. She hates sn*w with a passion. Kinda glad she's staying at my other sisters house, that way I won't have to hear her grousing about the sn*w!

Depending on the weather and my son's work schedule, I may go down to see how Mom is this afternoon, as I may have to pick him up after he gets off work. Gonna be a full weekend for sure! Between DJ's work schedule, Mom in the hospital, Sister in town, the Timonium show and the Superbowl, I got lots to see and do! Big Smile

Ulrich, Sorry to hear about your Dad. I wish there was something we could say to ease the sadness.

Todd. Better to not question her clothing habits. You won't understand. I watch my wife put on 2, sometimes 3  complete outfits before work, only to see the rejects land on the floor. Funny thing, a week later she will take the same outfit (the one she rejected a week earlier) put it on, and think she looks like a million buck in it.ConfusedConfused And shoes! Sometimes I think I married Amelda Marcos!Surprise She has (I kid you not) 1 particular style of shoe in 7 colors! and thats just the tip of the iceberg!Laugh

Barry, Get rid of that cold, quick!Wink

Jeffrey, I know memorial services can be tough, but I know with my Dad's, there were a lot of happy memories remembered, that helped us deal with the loss. Hope you do the same.Angel

Well, gotta get some work done here today, so I'll catch y'all later and one more thing,

GO RAVENS!!!

Good morning. It's 44° with 83% humidity. The high will be 58°.

Getting ready for my mothers memorial service this morning. Just taking a short time out to post this. I also have to get paying the bills out of the way today and get the first half of the groceries. I might be able to get some layout work in later. Well that's all for now.

Ulrich- 100...Indifferent….mph??!! Or Kph. If it’s mph WOW!!! Don’t go outside and stay away from the windows.

Todd - it´s 100 mph or 160 kph, Top windspeed measured yesterday was 180kph or about 112mph. I am just glad that our houses are built a little sturdier and there are hardly any billboards around. The storm dumped 40 empty containers onto a truck yesterday, just seconds after the diver had left it.

Right now, it´s pretty calm, but there is more heading towards us.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and two egg….no wait. Order of French Toast with powdered sugar and maple syrup please. Oh yes the real stuff. Thanks.

  • Today Increasing clouds, with a high near 19. Wind chill values between -3 and -13. West northwest wind 9 to 11 mph becoming southwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 18 mph.
  • Tonight Snow likely, mainly after 9pm. Cloudy, with a low around 18. South southwest wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

It’s 3° now but Monday, Monday temps will be 40 and pretty much all next week. 38 to 40. Don’t think I’ll worry about the snow.

Ray- I hope the new food helps Manet and I’m glad it was the lesser of two evils.

Galaxy- Thanks for the video! Nifty little train. Oh and thanks for clearing up the railway thingYes

Ulrich- 100...Indifferent….mph??!! Or Kph. If it’s mph WOW!!! Don’t go outside and stay away from the windows.

Well I’m not even gonna speculate what I’ll end up doing today before w**k tonight. I know there is an incredibly huuuuuge-o-mongus pile of clothes that suddenly showed up in the bathroom and I have no idea where they came fromTongue Tied. Seriously. Where did she have these? There was no pile by her side of the bed and no pile in the bathroom yesterday, but this morning BAM!!!! SurpriseThere it was....is. The door won’t even open fully. I don’t get it. And I don’t get how she can go through THAT many clothes in such a short period of time. It’s…it’s..it’s inhuman. It’s SUPERhumanAlien. Maybe she's an alien. To top it all off….her closet is full. No room. No evidence of where these things even CAME from. I recognize them so I know they aren’t new. I just can’t figure some things out. SighProbably best to not even try.

I’m starting to think we need a live in laundry person just for herConfused. These new washer and dryers best be tough cause Maytag has no idea what they’re in for with this woman.

ALOHA!

Welcome!

The Islands and some RR history:

Kauai:

Hawaiian railroads' earliest history is often credited to the Island of Kauai, whose first system opened in 1881 on three miles of narrow-gauge railroad track at the Kilauea Plantation to haul sugar cane.  By 1915 the island boasted over 200 miles of track, all of which served several sugar plantations on the island, although by the 1950s most of the island's railroads were abandoned. Today, Kauai once again has an operating railroad, the 2.5-mile Kauai Plantation Railway, a tourist railroad that operates seven days a week.

Here's a link:

http://www.kauaiplantationrailway.com/

Oahu:

The Island of Oahu's railroad history dates back to 1889 when the Oahu Railway & Land Company opened its 12-mile line between Honolulu and Aiea.  Over the next roughly 20 years the railroad continued to expand and grow, mostly serving sugar plantations, local industry and hauling passengers.

In the railroad's final form it stretched all of the past Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach to Kahuku, where it served a sugar mill there, including an 11-mile branch to Wahiawa to serve local pineapple fields.  After World War II the railroad's infrastructure was almost  entirely worn out after heavy use during the war to transport material  and troops.  As traffic began receding following the war, when a 55-foot tsunami struck the north shore of Oahu on April 1, 1946 the railroad  was all but forced to shutdown with the heavy damages inflicted on the  property (as well as its customers).  Of all Hawaiian railroads the largest was the OR&L, which had double-track operations between Honolulu and Aiea, including block signaling and commuter train operations.

Maui:

The Island of Maui's railroad history dates back to 1890 when the island's large Pioneer Mill, which harvested sugar cane, built a short railroad to better move its product to market.  The railroad lasted until around 1950 when trucking and mechanical farm machinery was more cost effective than railroads.   However, the railroad did not disappear.  In 1969 A.W. "Mac" McKelvy  partnered with the Makai Corporation and began the Lahaina-Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad, better known as the Sugar Cane Train.  The railroad has become extremely popular over the last 39 years and currently operates six miles of track.

{see video opening page of LK&P RR}

Hawaii, The Big Island:

Hawaii's railroad history is best remembered with the Hawaii Consolidated Railway, one of the state's only standard-gauge railroad  operations.  The railroad was originally chartered as the Hilo Railroad on March 28th, 1899, to connect the Olaa sugar mill with Waiakea, a distance of eight miles.  As the years progressed the railroad made numerous extensions, which included lines to Olaa, Kapoho (17 miles), Hilo itself and later a 12.5-mile line north of Olaa to Glenwood, although the latter was later scaled back in the early 1930s.  The  railroad continued to grow in the 20th century with a 33.5-mile line up  the Hamakua coast.

This extension was extremely expensive with numerous tunnels and  bridges which forced the railroad into receivership in 1914.  It emerged as the Hawaii Consolidated Railway and continued moving people and goods through World War II (its Hamarkua Division was very popular with tourists).  As was the case with the Oahu Railway & Land Company, however, the massive and devastating  tsunami on April 1st, 1946 destroyed numerous bridges and washed out the right-of-way in several locations instantly forcing the railroad to  shutdown.  Today, the Hawaiian Railway Society has rebuilt over six miles of track on the Island of Hawaii, with future plans for further extensions with excursions offered over the railroad.  The society is also home to the state's most extensive collection of railroad equipment.

Have A GREAT day!!

MAHALO For "tuning in"!

Keep on trackin'

Geeked

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.

 HO and N Scale.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Just found an old film about Hamburg, filmed in 1938. Quite interesting to see. One of the ships shown in the first half is the MV Wilhelm Gustloff, a German cruise liner which was sunk on 30 January 1945 by a Soviet submarine in the Baltic Sea while evacuating German civilians, officials and military personnel from Gotenhafen, occupied Poland, as the Red Army advanced. By one estimate 9,400 people died, which would make it the largest loss of life in a single ship sinking in history

Although much (all?) of the port area was destroyed during the Allied air raids, it again looks pretty much like then.

Good Morning!

We are under a storm warning. Yesterday, we had gusts up to over 100mph. Hamburg has seen a considerable amount of flooding last night:

That area gets flooded frequently, still there are lots of folks not heeding the flood warning, leaving their cars parked in the flood zone.

No good news about my dad. He seems to have given up and is going down rapidly. I am all sad.

Taking of accent - you should here mine! It´s not like Herr von Flick in that infamous TV show "Allo, allo", but more like the one of Irishman having had one too many. HAven´t spoken the language for years now.

Well, I am out.

Have a good one!

Edit: I see I got tops this morning! Janie, put everyone´s breakfast on my tab, please!

Aloha Hawaii!

The Bear thinks Aussie accents sound odd... New Zealand takes the cake! It's like a mix of South African and English Smile, Wink & Grin Although some uccents are thucker thun uthers. Laugh

We are friendly neighbours, although we have many sporting rivalries, Cricket, Football (Rugby Union and league) and perhaps the most fierce, netball, Oz and NZ get along well, after all we are the ANZACS. Fighting side by side for many a war under that banner.

It is a bit more than a walk at low tide Big Smile There still is a continental shelf!

Evening All, A banana milkshake please.

The Bear:   I wish I could send you some of this rain we have here...Tongue Tied

It would be much appreciated Yes, Hope the visit to the Doc goes well. Angel

Todd.  Bear- I thought Australia and New Zealand were like neighbors. You have pretty much the same accent so figured you’re only like 20 miles or so apartSmile, Wink & Grin.

Pretty much the same accent !!!!!???  I'll excuse you Todd, but to me Aussies talk funny. Laugh

Regarding the distance, admittedly while he was young at the time, I have a English relation who thought that it was possible for New Zealanders  to walk over to Australia at low tide. Sigh

My sister lived and worked in South Carolina for six months in the mid 80s and had to resort to carrying a pocket atlas because it was easier to show rather than explain where she came from, The question that used to make her blood boil, though as a visitor she didn't let it show, was "well if you come from down there, how come you speak such good American ??" Hmm

I'm sure JaBear could just hop in his boat & scoot across to Australia to track 'em down.

Right, JaBear?... WinkWhistling

Here's a link........  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossing_the_Ditch

...... I'm not even in that league, ( and possibly not even that mad ?? debatable point Smile, Wink & Grin) plus it would cut into my modelling time and I'm not sure If Rob would wait that long. Question  Smile

A photo for Rob though.....
