Good Morning!!!

Coffee and I’ll have those Pop Tarts this morning please. Thanks.

Partly sunny, with a high near 43. Looks like 40’s til at least Monday. Maybe even some rain coming our way. I hope so.

Tongue TiedWhat was yesterday? Pizza day? I had pizza last night too….

Jeff- In regards to missing your Mother, I know how you feel. And like someone said, the feeling never goes away, just the intensity.

Ray- I’m glad Blackie seems to be feeling better.

Welp, today is my “full day” of w**k. Don’t know what I’ll get involved in othernat. Looks like the water bill did go down thanks to new washer. Haven’t seen any real drop with power and gas bill even with new energy efficient appliances. Of course the furnace is the same but the dryer is gas..Hmm.. I reckon come AC time we’ll see if the new AC unit saves anything. But I was pleased to see the water bill did drop by about 5 bucksYes. Sooooo, I figure the washer and dryer should pay for themselves, and I should start seeing a savings in let’s seeeeee, assuming it stays at that rate, say 5 bucks a month... average of course….12 months a year…..let’s see carry the fooooouuuur,…… OH! Would yuh look at that!.....touch over 16½ years and woo hoo! I’ll be sittin in taaaall cotton!

Happy, happy, happy!

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

ok so math is going much better but I've hit a road but I'm not sure how to simplify the cube root of 81. Black Eye I have a test tomorrow I really hope one of these is not on it.

Man, I absolutly HATED these types of problems, though my Trig class has been off of those things for a while now. In Physics, we are going over momentum and impulses, and in POD we are going over the origins of the Cold War.

Anyway, good morning.

Slept good. Feeling good. Have work so I will have a little more money in my pocket in a little bit. We have also had some snow squals recently and they don't seem to be accumulating to anything worth reporting.

Aloha again!!!

Heritage Railways Of Kauai:

There are two heritage railways in Kauai, the birthplace of Hawaiian railroading.

Railways were under construction in both Kauai and on Hawaii Island at about the same time in 1881

The Grove Farm Museum preserved original Steam Locomotives from the earliest days of rail transport in Kauai, restoring the small-gauge engines without much notice beyond the local community. The museum acquired property where historic right-of-ways had run, and found, in the thick vegetation, track beds ready for restoration, allowing the Museum to display their authentic, working locomotives.

http://grovefarm.org/hawaii-trains/

The second heritage railway in Kauai is the Kauai Plantation Railway at Kilohana. Unlike the Grove Farm Museum trains, which are brought out only once a month, the Kauai Plantation Railway is a daily fee-based attraction.

http://www.kauaiplantationrailway.com/rtt.htm

Kauai's first railway

In Kauai, the Kilauea Sugar Plantation purchased a steam locomotive from Germany and created 30-gauge tracks through the sugar cane fields. The first spike in this track was driven by Princess Liliʻuokalani, then Regent and soon to assume the throne as last Queen of theKingdom Of Hawaii. She had arrived the day before, disembarking at Hanalei a nearby port, and was invited to the September 24 ceremonial opening at the site of what is now the town of Kilauea. The assembled dignitaries included Governor Paul P. Kanoe and the Plantation Manager, Robert A. Macfie, Jr.This is often credited as Hawaii’s first railway.

While field railways ran on “literally little more than panels of snap-track laid and re-laid across the fields as the seasonal cutting progressed,” more permanent right-of-ways were soon established to provide freight and passenger service from mills to ports, where raw sugar was packed aboard ocean-going ships bound for California refineries. An engineer, sent to Kauai from Honolulu in 1898, took the train from Waimea, on the coast, to the Kilauea Plantation’s Kekaha mill, situated in the midst of the cane fields, and he described the trip:

"The railroad is a cute affair, only 30 inch gauge—cars mostly flat for hauling cane and sugar in bags….All cars are no more than 4 feet wide….Engines… are regular toys—they weigh about eight tons….[We] bowled over the four miles of toy railroad to the headquarters of the Plantation….They have engineer only—no fireman—no breakman. No breaks on cars"

It is 70 Degrees F and 21 Degrees C on Oahu right now at about half way past midnight HST.

Good evening.

We just returned from Clarksville, TN along with about a dozen neighbors. Why did we go there? ... The answer was we went to eat Pizza! ... There is a place there with some world class, outstanding pizza. It's one of those places that brews its own beer, too.

The road to downtown Clarksville takes us next to Fort Campbell, home of the Sreaming Eagles; 101st Airborne. We thank out troops for their service!

Jake .... looks liek a great N scale layout. I hope you keep visiting the DIner.

Ulrich ...... Prayers for you and your family.

Jeff .... We're your friends if you need us as you mourn the loss of your Mom. ... It was good of you to share your layout with the little engineer!

Darren .... Good to see you. I'll have to look at your plan, and let you know if I have ideas.

Bama .... I have not seen you here much lately. You're probablyt busy with work and your young family. Your area has been on TV often in the past week. Glad the boy was rescued from his kidnapper. The man must have been very crazy.

Sue .... Where are you? We need an update on yours and Larry's layout!

Duke ..... Wake up! Vinnie says its time for your booth to be cleaned!

Rob .... You are asking about Con Cor and Bachmann passenger cars. Before getting tio that, what kind of train are you puttung together? What railroad and what era? What is the minimum radius on your layout where you will be operating teh cars?  I have passenger cars from those two brands as well as several other brands.

Ray .... I hope Blackie keeps improving! Our cat is much better after seeing the vet and taking medicine. I did not like putting the pills down her throat, and she did not lke it either.

Cheers, everybody!

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a cup of decaf for me right at the moment.

Went out earlier to put out my trash for pick up tomorrow and was interested to see all kinds of animal footprints in the snow out there.  There is just about an inch of snow that has been there for a few days now and I could find deer, rabbit, squirrel, cat, and mouse runs.  That is one of the things I used to love about taking Scouts out Winter camping.  lots of signes of animal to identify if there is snow.  The deer has walked right across my main driveway to browse at my next door neighbors house too.

Spent a few minutes checking things down cellar so I did some clean up of the workbench so I can start another project soon.

Blackie seems to be tolerating his medicine well.  He has a good appetite and actually hobbled out to see me a couple times today.  I was sitting at the computer and felt a paw touch my leg.  Looked down and his little face is looking back at me with his "please pick me up and cuddle me" look.  I obliged him...  He was the most active this afternoon that I have seen him in a couple weeks, but he slept all morning on the couch and didn't do much more than change position a few times.  Hope the pills work and he won't lose any more mobility...

Just checking through the posts... About time to call it a night I guess.  Prayers for all in need.  See you tomorrow.

Nice James. Thailand eh? T'was a pretty wild place in the 70s.

Rob - none of the stuff I had was lighted or at least they didn't function. I would figure out if you're getting more log cars and see if they all are too high or low. If the cars all vary I would fix all the cars. If the cars are mostly the same height, I would operate on the loco. Have you checked against a coupler height gauge?

I feel better about the actuator wires now. I got my trusty tried and true No Korode out and treated the music wire and coupling tube then wire brushed it all at the joint before cold fitting the parts together.I suspended the parts between a pair of solder iron rests I had laying around then dropped some more liquid flux on the joint and heated it all before touching some silver solder to the joint. The result is a nice strong joint. I got lucky and got the wire fed back through the place I had to rip it out of so tomorrow will see if it all is good.    Time to get some shut eye. Catch ya tomorrow with luck.  J.R.

Thought I might share this photo I took yesterday of my CSX GP40-2

Layout work will be slow for the next couple of months as most of my savings are going towards my 10 day holiday to Thailand in May.

Cheers.

It's been a busy day and I'm wiped. Ran some trains for my great nephew today. He used my Digitrax Zephyr to change out motive power from a lashup of geeps and a slug to a trio of F units with minimal coaching from me. Well, time to pack it in. See y'all tomorrow.

Hey guys

Trying to type one-handed (well, without the use of a finger in my left hand) kinda sucks. I tried to pick up 3 boxes of product (about 120 pounds total). I did get it up, but when trying to manuver them around other boxes I scrapped my left hand against a metal pedestal, then dropped the boxes on my left pinkie. So my entire left pinkie is pretty much one big scab at this point.

Did I mention that on top of the 12 hour shift saturday, and the 9 hour shift sunday; I couldn't get too sleep last night and I pulled a normal 8-hour shift today. So I'm tired, and it didn't help that when I left for work, Delilah bolted out the door and I had to go after her. Ugh... So tired...

Sorry I didn't post much earlier, was trying to figure out what to do for my thrall gons. I'm going to go around town tommorrow and see if I can find some 3/16" wide masking tape. My plan is to paint the middle end panel white, then use the tape for the stripe, then paint black over it. It requires less masking then the other way around.

Ulrich, Sorry to hear about your dad. But I'm with Jeff on the matter.

Ken, Check PMs

BN Gary, White ends where kind of an 80s thing for the thrall gons. Lots of pictures I've been able to destinguish the cara data on say they were redone between 1986 and 1988. But there is a video from 1983 with a white end one. Perhaps the last batch was recieved with white ends or it was one of the first done? I like the stripes better though, and I won't have to change the car data for it.

Q Garry, I'll try to get a better picture of those 2 C30-7s anticlimbers tomorrow.

It's early, but I might hit the hay now...

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Jeff: When do you guys start cutting the grass in Louisiana? we dont have to worry about that for close to May

Really this time of year we should be having our harshest weather but we're not. Usually mowing season season runs nine to ten months and it's not unusual to be cutting the grass at Christmas. Well our cold weather set in a little early little year so no Christmas time mowing. Now the grass has been slowly growing for the past few weeks and is really greening up from the recent rains. Mowing may start in a week or two. The extended forecast through to the end of the month is showing almost consistent highs of high 60's -  low 70's.

JeremyB
sounds like your nephew is really digging the trains. Do they live near you so that he can see them more often?

Yeah, he's really nuts about then trains. His father is trying to get him interested in cars but I think he's fighting a losing battle there. If my own experience is any indication (I was a hopeless train nut from the first moment I clapped eyes on one and it's the same story for him) once a train nut, always a train nut. He may move away from them in his teen years but like me he'll be drawn back to them like being pulled by a gigantic magnet. My father got me interested in cars and I I messed with them for many years but the trains were always first and foremost. Oh, and my older niece and her son live in Virginia. I don't know what her husband does and I don't really care. My younger sister and her other half live in Pennsylvania but she works in Virginia. I told my niece to take the boy to Steamtown at Scranton, Pa and watch him just melt down being that close to the trains.

Maybe when he gets into his teen years and he still displays an interest in railroads, you might want to consider telling him about Rail Camp. I went to Rail Camp 2012 with lone geep and had a really good time. It was in Scranton PA during 2012.

 Evening Folks

 Flo, a Beer pleases!

Ulrich My Friend, if it is your Father time, I hope it is a peaces full journey and my family best wishes to your Mother and your family.

Work Front I was off today, but yesterday it seems all was forgiven. Taylor (manager) treated me like a human again, I am sure he realized what a ass he had been to me. Second visit with Dave (area supervisor) went well, Dave had got his pound of flesh on the last visit. So I guess Taylor did not need anymore out of my butt!

Got little done today, was very tired but I got a few things done.

My old computer chair / train-room / snake room wheels had finally gave out and was unsafe for my wife to use. I all so fell on my caboose a few times. Picked up a High Back Executive Chair from Good Will my wife spotted the other day. Not sure if it will hold up, creaks a lot. Need to make sure all the screws are tight and lube the joints. My now dead chair was from the 70's and was built like a rock, all steel frame.

 See you later.

Fruit & veggie smoothie, please.

***J.R., did both the Bachmann and Concor cars come lighted? If so, do they both work on a DCC layout "out of the box"? Something I do not get about Bachmann is this: I bought their Climx loco and their log skidder car and the the coupler on the car is considerably lower. Only half of those two couplers connect up, so I won't know until I try them together if they will remain coupled at all. You would think that at least within the same manufacturer, they would have across the board standards for something as important as coupler height.

Rats, all this talk of pizza has made me hungry and I can't leave for home yet. Nobody delivers here either as we're "too far out in the country",

Rob - I have Con Cor and Bachman both. I favor the ..... RivaRossi? The ConCor are very light weight and fairly basic but they work ok with weight in them. The Bachman are much more detailed and the trucks with articulated couplers work well on tight radius track. The couplers themselves are a disaster and they got swapped for KD's. The cars are very sensitive to grade variations most especially the ending transition at the top of a grade. Mine constantly uncoupled until in fustration I fit them with the old horn hook couplers - problem solved. Hopefully your track work is better than mine was on the last layout. This time I sanded the transitions and seem to have no issues (said in a very soft voice so as not to draw Mr. Murphys' attention).

Jeff - I loe it at the museum when the little ones light up as the trains start moving. Makes all the effort worthwhile.

Back to it for me.   Catch ya laters, J.R.

It's been a busy day. Went to my fathers place for breakfast this morning. Then brought my great nephew here to see the layout in action. Boy when I turned on the room lights he thought he'd died and gone to heaven! His eyes got almost as big as his face. I showed him how to work the Zephyr and he picked it up real quick. He got to run a long train being pulled by three geeps and a slug then I showed him how to switch them off and put a trio of F units without touching the locos. After running the F units for a while for a while it was time to take him back to his mother. From there I went to town and got a couple of pizzas. I haven't yet had a chance to eat a piece of either one yet. As soon as I got back my father called and said he was coming to pick me up to go look at a new yard tractor. He needed to see how well it fits me before he buys it. Well I stuck the pizzas in the fridge and we went and looked. It's a large Murray-Ohio, 46" cut, 20hp Briggs and Stratton, hydrostatic tranny. With the exception of the parking brake which is set with the left foot, a plus for me, it's all hand controlled. With the left hand advance the drive lever forward or backward for forward and reverse. The further it's pushed the faster the tractor goes. Steering is by steering wheel. I would have nixed steering levers real quick and he knows it. I'm sure I'll have to make a slight modification so it can backed up with the blades engaged. I told him I like it and he bought it on the spot. We loaded it onto his pickup and brought it home and I put it in the shed. It's already been made clear to the others that I'm the primary operator. They'll have to live with the little MTD Yardman. Now why did he get this new one? Well the old Peerless is going away. After 15+ years the engine is still good but the rest of it is pretty much worn out and we can't get the parts we need to fix it any longer. The mowing deck is rusting out and the tranny is singing it's death song. He saw late in the season last year that I was having a hard time with the Yardman. Most of it's controls are set up for the right foot. That doesn't work well for me. Driving it in forward was hard enough, reverse was extremely difficult. This new one has the physical size and weight of the old Peerless so adjusting to it is no problem. Well enough about that. I now have some time to myself and I hear a pizza calling from the fridge.

Coffee refill, please.

Bachmann Silver Series 85' smoothside passenger cars: Anyone have any and how decent are they? How about Concor's versions? Some brands tend to be soooo pricey by comparison, just wondering how much of a difference there is between these and let's say BLI or MTH? Any experience with and/or thoughts on the various options will be much appreciated!?!

To tuckered out to cut firewood, so it's the heatpumps for heat tonight. Will be resting in the corner booth until evening critter rounds.

Packer

Afternoon guys

Todd, I'm leaning towards painting the ends white now. All the photos of those kinds of cars I can find suggest white ends and not white stripes.

you can probably get away with white ending them Packer, it looks like 529377 series cars carried white ends on the rotary coupler ends.

Ah! top of the page be easy fellas my tax return isn't back yet.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Hi Guys

Orientation went good. I start Wednesday night ( hopefully I can adapt to nights ) went to the hobby shop after but didn't really see anything that caught my eye. He is doing a walthers order up soon so I will email my list over to him sometime by the end of the week. Still trying to get some odds and ends for my scrap yard scene.

I will do some chores around the house tonight and tomorrow because I think I will be somewhat sluggish the first few days. Might try to spend tonight and tomorrow on the railroad. I was going to start a excel spreadsheet of my current rolling stock so that I can have a inventory on my pc. Might also sneek some PC games in tonight Stick out tongue
