Galaxy, for what it is worth, my BIL told me a long time ago that when you get a head cold to stop using tissues of any kind on your nose and start using toilet paper, a good quality paper and you will not get a red and sore nose. I have proven this to be accurate many times and in fact just came through such since Christmas and IT WORKS. Must be less course fibers in the type of tissue so that your blow hole doesn't get sore with regular use. Dr. John has spoken..........

Good Morning all,
I’m not sure what is going on but all the posts after the first 2 are blank, I guess I’ll check back later and see if it’s any better.
I went shopping for a new side door and found if I buy a pre-hung door it will cost me $165. If I go with just a plain slab door it will cost me $700. So I guess I’m stuck in tearing out the current door and buying all new.
Good morning. It's 36° with 100% humidity. It'll be sunny with a high of 55°.I feel a bit better today but still not up to doing anything on the layout without wrecking something in the process. Seems like a good movie watching day.

Coffee and the breakfast surprise please. Thanks.Well, missed comin in yesterday. Got watchin a movie after Church then just a bunch of other odds and ends. Nothin special but nothing train related either.
Dennis B- Yup a spill just like that, but not as big luckily.
CDN Dennis- The bulb in Brenda’s flashlight went out. Cost of bulbs (two pack all you could get) $2.88. Cost of new flashlight with 2 “D” batteries…$2.00. Needless to say no new bulbs. Actually decided to just blow an extra 3 bucks and get a 5 LED one.
Terry- Thanks for the layout tour! Loved it. By the way, personally, I’m glad you didn’t pick up the clutter.
I understand the desire to present ones layout the best they can, and I enjoy that. But I also like seeing them in their “lived in” state from time to time. Just has a homey feel to it.

Morning gang!
Flo, Can ya fix me up with a "lumberjack" special this morning? I've got 2 cords of wood coming just after 10, and I want to get them stacked today! I think I'm gonna need it!
Finally last night I got back to the 4 Maryland Midland engines I started last year. I got the body shells down from on top my display cases (out of the cats reach) only to spend 20 minutes cleaning the dust and cobwebs off of them! Oh well, they are staying on the workbench now, come heck or high water, til they are done!! I was going to start applying stripes to them last night, but the wife found a channel with an NCIS marathon on,,and,,well,,,1 word! Ziva!
Barry, 30 people in your house,,,,at one time?? I shudder to think of that here. Probably would find me and the cats hiding under the layout!
Dennis, Good luck and yes, I feel your pain. Or at least I soon will. We will be replacing our drop ceiling, and rehanging the steel. The previous owner never fixed a dampness issue, so now all the panel sag. (We've since fixed that issue) Also how they hung the steel is all wrong,, so that's gotta be redone, Fortunately for me, the layout is modular!
Jeffrey, Be careful will ya! I don't know how much abuse that van can take if you keep slamming you noggin into it!
Finally, cricket? Oh I get it, that's what you feed your chameleon!
Cya all later, if my arms can take it!!
Hey Bear, I am a bit of a cricket tragic. I will watch any cricket thats on the idiot box. I love test cricket by a country mile the most. I enjoy ODI's and T20's are growing on me.
I don't just play cricket either at 23 I'm the youngest president of our cricket club (www.brackenridgecricketclub.com). I open the bowling and can hit big sixes.
Bear Said : going to follow "Tiddley winks" That must be a favourite saying for you Kiwi's! My ex girlfriend was kiwi (Rotorua) and said that every time the "Slack caps" played. She actually supported Australia. It was a bit haunting when I read that, if you know what I mean. The main reason I was watching the NZ v SA test was because Dale Steyn is my favourite player at the moment (he is like a throwback to the Lillee era) There were glimpses of hope for NZ, but flicking Ross Taylor was not clever. Gee, all the folks from the US will be wondering what the heck we are talking about!! It's good I'm not alone any more when I mention cricket!! Back to trains I too have a package somewhere between the US and Australia containing goodies. Should be here in the next day or two. BUGGER paying UPS shipping costs for 3-5 day service when USPS will deliver it 7-10 days for 30% of the price. That said the savings on an order of $500 would be worth paying extra, but my average order is $100-$150 at a time, NOT WORTH IT! It was reasonable two years ago at about $60 but now at $130+ NO THANKS. /Rant over. I hope you enjoyed your holiday, Bear. Better get to bed, OzJim

Gidday Alex, I still do like cricket, got interested in the One Day game, then grew to appreciate the intricacies of a well played 5 day test, not sure about this 20/20 though, might be a sign that I'm getting old . Just can't be bothered following the "national team". Cheers, the Bear.

"JaBear"Gidday All, Just back from holiday, 10 days of no w**k phone, Hooray !!!, no computer, not too bad but has taken a bit of time just to catch up on what's been happening in the Diner, Great conducted tour of Austria Ulrich, and Weekend Photo Fun. No model trains either, however my parcel from "Model Train Stuff" containing a couple of Ribside Car kits and some other goodies has turned up in my absence. james saunders It's 12.19AM here in Australia. I'm up watching New Zealand play South Africa in test cricket I'm sure "JaBear" would enjoy knowing this. Heck James, I gather from previous posts you're a bit of a cricket fan, which is fair enough, but even a lot of Kiwis have given up on watching our national team. I can put up with the "current " phase of sportsmen (and women) receiving celebrity status, but first, in my opinion, they have to have preformed Well to deserve it. The only consistency that the "Black Caps" have achieved in the past dozen years or so is underachievement, backed with pathetic excuses, ( I had hoped John Wright as Coach might have put a sense of responsibility and backbone into them but NZ Cricket managed to get rid of him) , and as for their latest fiasco over the sacking of the captain Ross Taylor, well I 'm going to follow "Tiddley winks". Oh for the days when we could play the game: actually was watching the Under Arm" incident in the Annandale Pub in Sydney, led to a interesting stouch that afternoon, though to be fair it was surprising how many Aussies backed us. Anyhow hope you Guys get some rain, and am looking forward to your new layout progress, (no pressure of course ). Was 80 F today , currently 0021 hours 8 Jan, and still 60 F. Don't know if this will cheer you good people up in the colder climes or just add salt to the wounds but Daughter and self after a bit of a paddle, certainly needed the sun block !!! Morning Coffee in the diner with friends...
GOOD MORNING!!!
Today is Monday, January 7th, 2013 {Orthodox Christmas}!
This month the phrases I have been doing are created here in the good ol' USA{not derived form merry ol' England} , so this morning's trivia of note is 'between a rock and a hard place' {because sometimes we feel that way in MRRing, and I don't mean Hydrocal rocks!}, SO:
Meaning:
In difficulty, faced with a choice between two unsatisfactory options
Origin:
This phrase originated in the USA in the early part of the 20th century. It is the American manifestation of a phrase that exists in several forms in other cultures.
The dilemma of being in a position where one is faced with two equally unwelcome options appears to lie deep in the human psyche. Language always reflects people's preoccupations and there are several phrases that express this predicament. The first of these quite literally conveys the uncomfortable nature of the choice between two lemmas (propositions), i.e. 'on the horns of a dilemma'. Other phrases that compare two less than desirable alternatives are 'the lesser of two evils', 'between the devil and the deep blue sea', 'between Scylla and Charybdis',' An offer you can't refuse' and 'Hobson's choice'.
The earliest known printed citation of 'between a rock and a hard place' is in the American Dialect Society's publication Dialect Notes V, 1921:
"To be between a rock and a hard place, ...to be bankrupt. Common in Arizona in recent panics; sporadic in California."
The 'recent panics' referred to in that citation are undoubtedly the events surrounding the so-called US Bankers' Panic of 1907. This financial crisis was especially damaging to the mining and railroad industries of the western states.
In 1917 the lack of funding precipitated by the earlier banking crisis led to a dispute between copper mining companies and mineworkers in Bisbee, Arizona. The workers, some of whom had organized in labour unions, approached the company management with a list of demands for better pay and conditions. These were refused and subsequently many workers at the Bisbee mines were forcibly deported to New Mexico.
It's tempting to surmise, given that the mineworkers were faced with a choice between harsh and underpaid work at the rock-face on the one hand and unemployment and poverty on the other, that this is the source of the phrase. The phrase began to be used frequently in US newspapers in the late 1930s, often with the alternative wording 'between a rock and a hard spot'.
A more recent example of the use of the expression, and one for which it seems gruesomely apt, is recounted in the 2010 film 127 Hours, which is based on Aron Ralston's book Between a Rock and a Hard Place. The memoir recounts the 127 hours that Ralston spent alone and trapped by a boulder in Robbers Roost, Utah, after a climbing accident in April 2003, eventually opting for the 'hard place' of freeing himself by cutting off part of his right arm.
The prayer candles are lit for those in need,,,
Have a GREAT day!!!
alexstanSir Madog, I am really enjoying these photo tours! Are you on holidays in Austria at the moment or something?
No, unfortunately not - I wish I could be.
This is just a virtual tour, but based on real circumstances. I have been to all of the places described, so it is partly a recollection of fond memories.
Last year I did a similar tour throughout Germany.
agreed thank you Madog for the tour it's rather nice.

Good Morning!
Say good bye to Salzburg, as we will continue on our way westward today. We will be taking a train out of Salzburg, heading for Innsbruck.
First stop will be at Zell am See. There we will change trains to take a ride on the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn (Pinzgau Railroad), a narrow gauge line connecting Zell am See with the Pinzgau Valley.
The Pinzgauer Lokalbahn (formerly Pinzgaubahn or Krimmler Bahn) is a narrow-gauge railway in Salzburg in Austria. The 53 kilometer railway follows the Salzach valley from Zell am See and Krimml through the Pinzgau mountains. The section between Mittersill and Krimml was damaged by flooding in 2005 and reopened in September 2010, after ownership was transferred into private hands. Since then, the line has undergone a complete overhaul, new rail cars have been put into service and ridership figures are going up considerably.
After returnuning to Zell am See, we continue on the mainline to Jenbach. Jenbach hosts two gems, one is the metre-gauge Achenseebahn, Europe´s oldest cog railway, and the other one is the Zillertalbahn, a 2 1/2 ft. narrow gauge line, connecting the lovely Zillertal Ziller Valley) with the outside wold.
In 1888 his Majesty the Emperor Kaiser Franz Josef I gave his consent to the construction of the narrow gauge steam cog railway, and since 1889 the Achenseebahn has been transporting holiday-makers and day trippers from Jenbach to the boat station of Seespitz at the Southern shore of the Achensee. In those days, the construction of the railway and the track required a high level of pioneering spirit and many a doubter was highly skeptical about this fancy new means of transport.Nowadays, not only railway enthusiasts are thrilled by the pure nostalgia of the 180 HP clad in the venerable charms of the era of monarchy. Awe-inspiring huffing and puffing accompany the train up the steep mountain with its maximum incline of 160 per thousand – an impressive 7 km in 45 minutes. This highly nostalgic and romantic experience takes you along lush meadows and through alpine forests – you may well get carried away by the impressive views of the Tyrolean Alps and the silvery path of the river Inn –and the promise of more to come.
The Zillertal railway belongs to a time when travel with the train was an adventure. It is one of the most well known working railway lines of our time. A ride on the Zillertal Railway is a fun experience for the whole family. For example, chugging down the valley on the nostalgic steam train, enjoying a glass of champagne in the crystal wagon, or even taking the helm of the steam train (hobby engine drivers), Modern rail carriages operate every half hour and a scheduled bus service provide an extensive public transport service.
We will stay overnight in Mayrhofen.
Enjoy!

Evening all! Flo, could I have a cup of decaf and some of the apple strudel please? Thanks you so much.
Been a really busy day for me in the train room. I've been installing the suspended ceiling and yes, I really should have done it before I built the bench work and what not but I had the material for the bench work and didn't have the $$$$$$$$$ for the ceiling materials at that time.
Soooooooooo it's been a bit of a trial so far and tomorrow it will only get worse I have the drop to put in place with metal studs. In the past I'd have used wood but it's too heavy to lift now so metal is the answer. Should be fun! Wish me luck

Chloe, I'll have a hot roast beast sandwich, trip to the salad bar, and a hot cup of decaf for supper tonight.
Garry, the .009 inch guitar string is the finest I could find, and works out to .783" in HO. The Silo Rods used for water tanks were anywhere from 1/2" to 3/4" usually so the string works out pretty close to large side of the prototype. Thanks!
Hey, hey, hey! The solar voltaic system kicked on for a few minutes when the sun came out while I was at church this morning.... Didn't do much, but a bit of the white stuff melted enough so I could clean off one more panel this afternoon. The next few days the temp is supposed to get well above freezing for part of the day. I should be able to clean the rest of the panels. Problem is now the panels still covered with snow are hard to get to and pull the heavy wet snow off. Then It should be an easier job to keep the snow cleaned off them and let them produce a bit more power.
Curt, the area is coming along very nicely on your layout.
Jeffrey, glad you made it back in the trailer in one piece..... Good thing the nephew was there to help you a bit.
I have unplugged the lights I have in the windows here during Advent and Christmas. Since today is Epiphany, it is time to put them away for the year. Also time to start my taxes..... At least I will be getting a good chunk of change back this year!
