Good Morning!

Say good bye to Salzburg, as we will continue on our way westward today. We will be taking a train out of Salzburg, heading for Innsbruck.

First stop will be at Zell am See. There we will change trains to take a ride on the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn (Pinzgau Railroad), a narrow gauge line connecting Zell am See with the Pinzgau Valley.

The Pinzgauer Lokalbahn (formerly Pinzgaubahn or Krimmler Bahn) is a narrow-gauge railway in Salzburg in Austria. The 53 kilometer railway follows the Salzach valley from Zell am See and Krimml through the Pinzgau mountains. The section between Mittersill and Krimml was damaged by flooding in 2005 and reopened in September 2010, after ownership was transferred into private hands. Since then, the line has undergone a complete overhaul, new rail cars have been put into service and ridership figures are going up considerably.

After returnuning to Zell am See, we continue on the mainline to Jenbach. Jenbach hosts two gems, one is the metre-gauge Achenseebahn, Europe´s oldest cog railway, and the other one is the Zillertalbahn, a 2 1/2 ft. narrow gauge line, connecting the lovely Zillertal Ziller Valley) with the outside wold.

In 1888 his Majesty the Emperor Kaiser Franz Josef I gave his consent to the construction of the narrow gauge steam cog railway, and since 1889 the Achenseebahn has been transporting holiday-makers and day trippers from Jenbach to the boat station of Seespitz at the Southern shore of the Achensee. In those days, the construction of the railway and the track required a high level of pioneering spirit and many a doubter was highly skeptical about this fancy new means of transport.

Nowadays, not only railway enthusiasts are thrilled by the pure nostalgia of the 180 HP clad in the venerable charms of the era of monarchy. Awe-inspiring huffing and puffing accompany the train up the steep mountain with its maximum incline of 160 per thousand – an impressive 7 km in 45 minutes. This highly nostalgic and romantic experience takes you along lush meadows and through alpine forests – you may well get carried away by the impressive views of the Tyrolean Alps and the silvery path of the river Inn –and the promise of more to come.

The Zillertal railway belongs to a time when travel with the train was an adventure. It is one of the most well known working railway lines of our time. A ride on the Zillertal Railway is a fun experience for the whole family. For example, chugging down the valley on the nostalgic steam train, enjoying a glass of champagne in the crystal wagon, or even taking the helm of the steam train (hobby engine drivers), Modern rail carriages operate every half hour and a scheduled bus service provide an extensive public transport service.

We will stay overnight in Mayrhofen.

Enjoy!
