Hi Daisy,

The tickling frog is still in my throat, so tea or bullion will be good..and more Mucinex please...

I don't want to get on the wrong side of Jeffrey's temper, As I have {graying}  Irish and Norse Red hair and a temper to match..don't need to have  a battle of the wits here...lol

I wsa supposed to be sending off a package to Jeffrey today if I can get it, but I am now stuck waiting for a call back on the insurance..looks like they DID screw it up when the fee I pay was QUADRUPLED on us! SHe is looking into it and I am awaiting a call back..so THAT could take all day! Good thing I got them "fresh in the AM", because by afternoon they are harried. They DIDN't increase the allowances for a couple and looks as if they rated us as "One person"...if we are "one person" I have a larger taller-than-me talking shaddow following me around...Then I have to find out how to get MOH a new card as MOH will be cover on my insurance.

Well, I will busy myself with the dishes then,and maybe toss in a load of laundry so I get something done before MOH comes home...

Getting a headache..the feverish feeling kind..hhmmm.

have a great day, y'all...

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and oh, I don’t know surprise me. Thanks.

Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 1pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 77. Then they say about 3 in the afternoon, the front moves through and the temps will plunge like Charo’s neckline to the upper thirties.

Hm. Seems “that thread” is really being civil. Nice.Yes

Checked my E-mail and the tile order arrived at the store last night and should be ready for pickup sometime this morning. Careful timing on my part should allow for pickup around lunch timeBig Smile. I need a break from cabbage.Whistling

Ray- Help you with your firewood? I (ahem) suppose you could say that. Of course I’m not familiar with your property lines and may uh, well, you know, “prune” the wrong tree. Honest mistake of course. Honest.

Might make some chili over the weekendChef. Mmm. Sounds good.

Ya’ll have a good day, ya hear!!!!

Good morning, Diners.  I will  have a large black coffee, please, Chloe.

Since I have my computer working again, many of my buttons for shortcuts are gone.  It has been strange.

Today is the only dry day this week so I plan to work outside on those chores.

Later,  Sue

Good morning. It's 70° with 99% humidity and patchy fog. It's partly cloudy now but is quickly changing to mostly cloudy. The high will be 85°. There's rain moving in tonight.

I'm feeling better this morning than I did last night but I can already feel that I'm on the bad end of a mood swing. I just hope nothing sets it off. When it starts there's nothing I can do stop it. Darn medicine side effects! At two this afternoon I have to go down and stay with my mother for a bit. I hope she'll be watching something other than CNN/FoxNews/QVC. I get what I need from a short news report in the morning but having somebody constantly barking about the same old stories hour after hour is just too much. I don't know how she puts up with it.

No layout work planned for today. If I get a chance later I'll get the tractor and trailer and pick up the pieces of my kitchen cabinet that are still piled up out in the yard and take them down to the burn pile.

I hope everybody else has a better day than I'm having thus far.

Good Morning all,

 Today the weather guessers say we will hit 81F then temps will plunge immediately into the 30’s and 40’s with rain from Friday to Friday with a slight chance of sn*w and freezing rain…..

 Barry, Katje has decided she is a lap dog and curls up in my arm, lap, chest, all 42 pounds of her bundled up with me in my chair at night.  Sometimes it’s hard to see the TV….

 Ray, friend of mine has a 4-8-2, ran fine on my layout and he put it on the shelf then 3 months later he pulled it out and it didn’t run for no reason at all.  Bachman said send it back and they would fix it.

 Ken, that’s a fine lap dog you have there in the picture.  I lost Jasmine (12yo Black Lab) early this year to bone cancer, she was my best friend.  Katje just happened to come along this summer.  The last 3 Labradors have been rescues and mixed breeds, Katje is the first AKC puppy I’ve ever had and I hope she lives a long healthy life.  I plan on adopting another dog in 4-5 years with the hope Katje will help me train the new puppy and maybe keep Katje young at heart….

Stan, I’m the bad guy telling them to remove the bridge, but the historic preservation process of commemorating and documenting the bridge is going to save the memory for a very long time.   I think the State Historic Preservation Board did a great job and some historic items/parts of the bridge will be on display locally. Preservationists were allowed 10 years to place the bridge back into service or move it to a location to preserve it.  In my humble opinion the cost of keeping any moveable bridge in serviceable condition past 107 years would have been a huge drain on anyone’s budget.  I spoke to a RR in Michigan and they budget $500,000 a year for regular maintenance and inspections on their 1930’s bridge.

Ray, there are some very cool spiral stone bridges out here still in service by the railroads; they were built in 1857 I think.  Still solid but someday those will be gone as well.  All we can do is document the heck out of them and share the memories because the craftsmanship to maintain and restore them is long, long, gone….

GOOD MORNING!!!

Although we shouldn't, we often say "good Riddance" to a person who has left our "company". It can also mean ANY nuisance. SO:

Meaning: An expression of pleasure on being rid of some annoyance - usually an individual

Origin:

'Riddance' is now so completely associated with this little phrase that it is rarely, if ever, seen out alone. The only sort of riddance on offer these days is a good one. It wasn't always thus. In the 16th century a riddance was a general-purpose noun and meant 'deliverance from' or 'getting rid of'. The first adjectives to be linked with the word were fayre/happy/gladsome and, in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, 1600, Portia wishes the Prince of Morocco 'a gentle riddance'.

A very early use of riddance comes in John Rastell's poem,  Away Mourning, circa 1525:

I haue her lost,

For all my cost,

 Yet for all that I trowe

 I haue perchaunce,

    A fayre ryddaunce,

   And am quyt of a shrew.

Shakespeare appears to be the coiner of 'good riddance', in  Troilus and Cressida, 1606:

Thersites: I will see you hanged, like clotpoles, ere I come    any more to your tents: I will keep where there is    wit stirring and leave the faction of fools.     [Exits]     Patroclus: A good riddance.

The phrase is often extended and emphasized as 'good riddance to bad rubbish' or, as that extended form was first coined, 'good riddance of bad rubbish'. Tobias Smollett used the phrase in a none too friendly comment, in The Critical Review, 1805:

But we are sorry ... to consider Mr. Pratt's writings as 'purely evil' ... we should really look upon this author's departure from the world of literature as a good riddance of bad rubbish.

The American journalist and member of President Andrew Jackson's 'Kitchen Cabinet', Francis Preston Blair, wrote an editorial in The Extra Globe, 1841. In this he appears to have been the first to use the precise version of the phrase that is most commonly used now:

[Following the withdrawal of members of a rival advisory group] From the bottom of our hearts we are disposed to exclaim "Good riddance to bad rubbish."

HAVE A GREAT DAY!!!

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just mu usual decaf before I call it a day.

I got a few odds and ends done today.  After looking over some boxes of stuff I have been storing for a decade from my parents house, I once again decided much of the stuff could be useful to somebody out there and didn't carry it out to the trash....  Besides the little dumpster I have is already full and I will need to get at least 2 more trash bags into it before pickup next Tuesday.  The firewood guy stopped by this afternoon to see when i want my 6 face cords of wood brought over and to ogle at the panels on the roof...  He thought it was a great idea and complimented me on the new metal roof as well. Did a bit more scenery on the corner mountain module.

The system made about twice as much electricity as it did yesterday...  Not very much.  All of 4.12 Kwh.  No sun peeked through the heavy cloud cover at all today.  Tomorrow should be better.

Tonight I spent about 4 hours working on a Bachmann 4-8-2 that suddenly just quit running back last Spring.  It was the loco I was using to pull the Lake Shores Limited on my layout.  Beautiful running locomotive, but it just quit.  The little light in the open firebox lit, but no headlight and no motor.  At first i figured it might be the decoder, took it out and checked it using a Loys Toys decoder tester IO have.  Appeared to be fine.  Tried using a different decoder in it,  no difference.  Put it aside for looking at or sending back to Bachmann later.  Got it out a week ago and brought it upstairs where I have the Timesaver set up at the moment.  Tonight I decided to heck with it, I was going to take it apart and see what i could do.  If I sent it back for service, odds are they would send me back a different loco in a road name I wouldn't have on the layout, and since it is long out of warranty I said I'll give it a try.

I downloaded the parts diagram off the Bachmann website a few days ago...  Managed to get her apart to where I could just jump a 9 volt battery across the terminals for the motor.  Nothing...  Hmmm.  continued to tear it apart to where the weights had been removed, the drive wheels were off, and I could see the motor completely.  Tried again.  No dice, then my eyes happened to notice a tiny little screw stuck to the side of the motor.  Not screwed in, but just stuck to it.  Took the screw (being held there by the motor magnet.  Tried the 9 volt battery thing again, and WHALLA!  The motor works...  OK, now all I have to do is get it back together.  Fun with those little bitty screws to get them back in place.  Amazing myself I got it back together with only one extra part that I have no idea where it is supposed to go.  Put the decoder back in the tender, and she runs down the track fine....  Saved another one, I did!  Only problem is not only do I have the one plastic spacer that I don't know where it came from and haven't found on the parts diagram, I also am missing the screw to hold the Tender cover in place.  It may be down cellar as I think I originally took the cover off down there.

Barry, you just went back on my prayer list!

John, wonderful story!  I still remember when I came home from school when I was 16 to find the vet had been to the house and put down my dog....  I was the one who found him dead in the back shed when I went in the house afetr getting home from school.  I knew it had to be done, but I didn't know when it would happen. The poor old dog had a tumor on his spine and couldn't walk at all.  My Father wanted to "spare" me knowing he was coming to do the job.  I think that day was the first time I ever screamed at my father and got away with it.  I cryed for days....  The dog was 16 also.  He was my dog from the time he was brought home...  Pets sure do get to us don't they!

See you all tomorrow!

What is "Elliots Trackside Diner"?

Thanks!

It's a nice little gathering spot that's off-topic. We discuss many things here including how day went. what's happening in our lives and many other things you can't discuss in the main area. Politics, religion and the other usual flame topics are off limits.

*

Tough day for me today. Been tired all day and was having to hold back a real short temper. That finally got the better of me when I went down to give my mother her shot. She said she tried calling me earlier but my number wouldn't work. Checked the call log on her phone. She hadn't dialed the area code. Here it's 337. I have a New Orleans number! 504 area code. She knows that but she forgets. My father gets home from work and comes in about then and starts yelling that I turned my phone off so it wouldn't ring. It was all I could do to keep from knocking him on his butt! Instead I pushed him down in a chair and explained the facts of the matter to him, showed him the call log and told him he wasn't getting off the chair until he apologized. He knows it's not a good idea to push me over the line but it seems sometimes that he just can't resist. Despite what you see of me online I'm not one of the friendliest people in the world. I'm easier to get along with than I was thirty-five years ago. Jump on me when I'm having a bad day? That doesn't fly! He decided it would be a real good idea to apologize. Besides he hadn't had dinner and the fridge was calling him. I gave my mother her insulin shot and made sure she'd taken her medicine before he and I got into it again. I don't want to hurt him but sometimes he just pushes and pushes and pushes.

Well now that I got that off my chest it's time I called it a night. I have to go to my parents place at 2pm tomorrow so I want to be rested up good. See y'all tomorrow.

Whistling

Hi Gang,

I have been checking in on you all thru the drive in window by the kitchen here in the diner, but haven't posted as have been busy visiting and touring around.

We've been here in Springfield, Missouri for a week now and will leave for home in another week as I have to be back at work on Nov. 03.

Took in some shows in Branson last Friday and we are going back tomorrow for a few more. Might as well do that when we are here rather than come all the way just for that.

Really great to get to share some time with our son as he had a little of a school break but is back at it now.  He says he only has 21 weeks to Graduation and can't hardly wait to get this Grad school finished.  That means we will have another visit down here in the spring for that Grad.

They have had some snow back home but it has all melted now. Alberta still is in a white wonderland though. This visit has sure extended our fall for us though. really the right time for a visit here.

Great dog pix, we enjoyed them and JohnReid that was a great story,  out of the mouth's of babes...

Sending prayers and blessings to all the members and their families who stand in need. there sure are a lot of us in that position lately.

Special wishes for Ulrich and Paul's wife.    Angel

Of course I have picked up some MR goodies while here. Had two packages waiting for me, one from Walther's and one from Dallas Model Works.  Added some real collectables to my Hot Wheels collection. I only collect proto-type cars and trucks but only ones that don't have silver (chrome) interiors.  I did run across a cab over Ford 9000 truck with a farm stake body on it, and of course nabbed that as well.

We have some civic elections back home tonight, so I'll sign off and see if I can pick that up off the web to listen to the returns.  It interests me as I work City Council Meetings every month and know most of them.

Happy Rails to all, will try and get back in again before heading home.

Cute little dog. Lots of love there!

Well, since we now have 6+ inches of s**w laying around, and it's going to stay, I was looking at the R R Room after supper and sort of trying to see if my minds eye idea for the yard area is going to w**k. Here is a look at the existing area:

My idea is to raise the whole area up about 3" and extend the yard about 2 1/2 feet toward the lower Left hand of the picture. I would still have a 24" space for access/maintenance and it would sure make for a much bigger yard.

 Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Author unknown...

 I am now crying like a baby, I still miss them!

Good evening all,

One degree short of a record high here today (84 degrees in late October).  Made for nice weather to plant iris and paint some wood trim.

Had lunch with some professional colleagues that I hadn't seen in 20 years.  Lots of fun catching up but I'm the only one of the three of us who's working, even if it is part time.  Although I feel bad for them, it did confirm the wisdom of moving on from the profession we used to be in together.

The mailman brought me the new wheels I ordered for my synthesizer case.  Not quite user-replaceable, but with the right tools and ample patience they're installed.  My back will thank me on Sunday.

A piece of apple pie with ice cream and a coffee sounds good right 'bout now.  Have a splended evening.

John Reid- that was a wonderful dog story. I especially liked the last part, of course.The first thing it says there  is to run and greet when someone comes home.  We don't have a dog, but rather a cat. Since I am "retired" I am usually at home when MOH {My Other Half} comes home form work. I holler out  to our cat that MOH is home loud and clear in hopes of getting our {lazy} cat to come running, which he does often. We {the cat and I}  get all excited when MOH comes home when he {the cat} shows up from his nap on the bed!

Our Cap has the "nap daily" routine down pat, too...and exercise- {romp run and play} well he races through the house a lot. They say a pet cat cam run up to 35 MPH, and We think sometimes he comes close to that!!!

He enjoys all the "pettums" we give him.

He's  a house cat so he's not fond of going out, and we don't encourage that, either. And he HATES car rides.{especially going to the V-E-T}.

Evening has arrived. Sun is setting sooner {I know, no duh}. The LED light strings down the long dark hall are blue white and have  a "strobing effect" to them...we are still trying to get used to. I wonder if the colored LED string lights {Christmas style} do the same? I wonder if the $35 LED bulbs that last "22 years" will do the same?

temps near 70 again tomorrow.....is it really the end of October? Not complaining mind you as supposed to be only near 50s end of 7 days planning. We have to get the porch plastic up. Not quite ready for the plastic A/C cover yet, but getting closer..actually had the A/C on for a few hours today as it got warm in here. The one in the BR will stay until about end of Dec. as the O2 machine I use creates heat..a lot of it.

I DID find the cheap eye glasses site. they have some for $5 or $10, but most are in the $11-$29 range and up, of course. I don't know if I will use them or not..I don't really need a new frames...but my frame less glasses can't be traced easily while I keep my frames waiting for the script lenses at Sam's club. I may have  to resort to my old off pair to get the new lenses installed. Sam's can now trace your lenses, send that off with the script and you keep wearing your old pair until new lenses come in and then they install the new lenses while you wait. that is what MOH did last time. I definitely need new lenses...All glasses must have the flex frame sides for me. I have stabbed myself in the eye with ones that don't have that feature!

Well, time for night meds and soon to bed.

have a great evening guys!

I thought that you guys at the dinner may enjoy this...

Being a physician, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker.  The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer.

I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure as they felt that Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him.

Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.

We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."

Startled, we all turned to him.

What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.

He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?"

The Six-year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

  • When loved ones come home, always run to greet them;
  • Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride;
  • Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy;
  • Take naps;
  • Stretch before rising;
  • Run, romp, and play daily;
  • Thrive on attention and let people touch you;
  • Avoid biting when a simple growl will do;
  • On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass;
  • On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree;
  • When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body;
  • Delight in the simple joy of a long walk;
  • Be loyal;
  • Never pretend to be something you're not;
  • If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it;
  • When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently;

Good Morning everyone!

    It's been another busy week having to run the museum every day except Monday right now. I did take yesterday off and drove down to Punxsutawney for the B&O RR retirees luncheon. I took a couple of friends, a retired B&O engineer who started on the B&O in 1948, and a retired B&O track foreman who hired out in 1946. I heard some great stories on the drive down and back. We had about 50 retirees there.

  Ken, I looked for photos of the Washington Indiana yard for you in the B&O RR H.S. newsletters, and couldn't find any, so I googled it, and guess what's in the newest edition! So, if you google B&O Washington Indiana, I'll bet you will be surprised at the photos they have.

  Ray and Lee, being involved with railroad history as I am here, I can understand to a point about the wishes of preservationists. But knowing the difficulty of saving classic structures such as old bridges, I've given up on worrying about what can and can't be saved. When they tore down the old B&O backshops at East Salamanca, I decided it was just going to have to happen whether I liked it or not! I'm glad for what has been preserved, and I'm glad I had a chance to see the things I was lucky enough to see when before they were gone. I guess that's another great thing about Modeling, you can recreate a little history if you wish.

I've been working with the Allegany State Park Historical Society to cover the old Pennsy Salamanca Branch on their Facebook page, and some great shots of the line have been turning up! Here's PRR 4454 passing the station and water tower at Quaker Bridge NY as it looked in 1950:

This is now all gone, and the place is under water in the summer when the Kinzua Dam floods the region.

Well, I got sidelined with some museum visitors and It's after noon now, so I'll finish up.

  Have a great day!

 -Stan

  Morning All,

    Barbara's getting better took a nose dive Monday night. Started bleeding again. I got call from the hospital around 0600, she was back in CICU. When I got to hospital her BP was 80/40 heart rate was 168, and in a lot of pain. At about 1000 nurse supervisor said I should call my daughters and they should be at hospital. Scared me a bit with that comment. They sedated her, pet her on a ventilator, punped 8 units of blood in her and several meds. By the time we were comfortable leaving around 8:30 her BP was 116/84 heart rate was 95, bleeding stopped. Blood counts were good. I did not hear from hospital yet so I am assuming everything is still OK. 3rd round of Chemo is now delayed 2 weeks.

  Galaxy -  I bought a pair of glasses from Glasses USA they were pretty good for the price. Try them out. You will need your RX to send them.

Off to the hospital.

  Prayers to all in need.

LSWRR Yup, *S**W is defiantly one of those 4 letter words. and since I just got in from shoveling 6 inches ofthe white stuff off the walks and cleaning the SUV off (scrape scrape, brush brush) I found a few other choice words to use as well Angry

This is way way too early for this stuff even here in AB. A bunch of the mountain ski resorts are opening this coming weekend....

Anyone in need of cooling down, I'll gladly send you a truckload or two!!

Have to take MOH to the DR to day for her yearly check up that is a year overdue.

Latter all.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the #2 special, over easy eggs, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sourdough toast... Leave the strawberry preserves, and make sure you have lots of dark roast coffee brewed.  Thank you Ma'am.

Todd, you coming over to help me with the firewood?  How nice...

Lee, yes the Bridge is coming down...  We have a couple "Preservationists" out at the museum who are all up in arms about it.  "We have to act right now to save it!!!"  Most of us out there just nod our heads, and then when the guy walks away say something like, "I guess he would rather have it just fall down by itself..."

Galaxy...  Glasses for under $10???  LOL  What do you think?  Probably $10 for the poorly made glasses and $99 for shipping and handling.

Another gray, gloomy day here in the Finger Lakes (Central NY basically between Rochahchah and Sorrycuse.  Just look on the map of NYS and you will find a bunch of long narrow lakes that look like, ah...., fingers).  Currently 55°F with a high later this afternoon of 62°F.

Guess I will go back to cleaning house...  Doesn't THAT sound like fun?

Later!

The tickling frog in my throat is still there. Copy cat anme brand expectorant is working, but seems to be never ending.

Went grocery shopping. Spent $120.00.

I am still trying to track down medical coverage tat might be cheaper than what they increased my secondary to Quadrupling it HURTS..

Definitely need new glasses...can't hardly read the computer screen much and the TV to computer and back again leaves everything fuzzy. I have put them off for 3 years as MOH needs to have new glasses to read things like coupons and UPCs at work, so we haver concentrated on MOH's glasses, and I have let mine go, I am also getting headaches..not migraines but headaches that I think are glasses related. Now I have to get them ..

**ANYBODY know of the supposed websites where you can get glasses for like $10.00 if you enter your script and then select the frames? is it real? are they good or bad? Do they last or are they el cheapos? Comments would be appreciated.***

Now for a nap, then to the free bread down the street, and then to argue with the insurance company reps. this afternoon.

FUn.

I am worn out! Like Jeffrey, I think I will just hang and nap...

later guys!

Good morning. It's 67° with 100% humidity. We have patchy fog. It's a wonder everything isn't soaked! It'll be partly cloudy with a high of 85°.

I'm still sore and stiff from yesterday. I think today I'll just rest and take it easy. No layout work planned but you never know.
