Good Morning all,

64F, Hi today 70F, Low 59F

We had a killing frost last week so with the temps in the 70s it’s officially Indian summer here (the period when First Nations/Native American peoples harvested their crops)

Ken, I can ask, what are you putting it in?  Normally the wheels have hairline cracks on the backsides of the wheels or they separate in the middle.

Vince, any idea what would cause a short on a fairly new PK1 E7A?

Jeff, I enjoyed my DISH TV but the equipment broke and when I called there was a long silence on the line when the customer service guy said the equipment was mine and it was up to me to fix it, even though I was renting the box.  I explained that I wasn’t going to pay for something I wasn’t receiving. Still silence, I felt he didn’t care if I was able to watch TV or not as long as I mailed in my monthly payment.  When I took my equipment to the UPS drop off facility there was 40 Dish TV return boxes already on the conveyer belt.  I switched to U-Verse; unlimited home phone long distance, 15 Mbs internet down 1.5 Mbs up,  and it was 2 dollars cheaper a month.

Good morning. It's 63° with 100% humidity. It'll be partly cloudy with a high of 85°.

Hopefully today I can get a chance to clean up to clean up the layout a bit and put my kitchen back together a little. I'd like to at least put a front on the cabinet even if it's just luan board. I had planned on working on the layout yesterday and ended up getting Shanghaied into working on things I really didn't want to work on.

Sir Madog

Just joining for a moment. The respiratory problems continue and I have a doctor´s appointment this afternoon. I am not really keen to go there, as I think I might end up in hospital again. So this is where I will be, should you not hear from me for a while.

Blessings!

Ulrich- I know all to well about breathing problems. I have 3 machines {nebulizer, O2 generator and CPAP} to help and 3 inhalers {1 emergency, 2 steroidal} to help me breathe. On days like today when the air will be heavy with moisture {expecting 70% chance of Storm  Umbrella  and the exhaust fumes of cars/trucks will permeate the air {it gets trapped in by the clouds and rain}  will cause breathing to be severely hampered.

I see in some other threads   people  complain about those of who complain about infirmities or life's little foibles here in the diner, but it totally mystifies me as to WHY they read this thread if they don't like it. complain all you like Ulrich, as some of us can commiserate with you. They can complain too, if they like, or perhaps they have yet to experience aches and pains.

Rain is coming down now and expected to get nasty as the day wears on. My knee told me yesterday rain was coming. Hope we don't loose power!

The prayer candle will not be lit until afternoon as we will be gone all AM to the health care seminar. BUT, there are still special thoughts for those in need like you Ulrich,a nd the others in the diner who need them..Angel

Toto...follow the yellow Brick Road to:

Morning coffee in the Diner

GOOD MORNING!!!

Quid Pro Quo is often heard, SO:

Meaning: Something given in return for a item of equivalent value - like tit for tat.

Origin:

A Latin term meaning 'something for something' or 'this for that'. The idea is more commonly expressed in English as 'one good turn deserves another'. This has been in the language since at least 1654, as here in H. L'Estrange's The Reign of King Charles:

"One good turn deserves another."

'Quid pro quo' is in use in colloquial English but is also a legal concept in the area of trade or exchange of goods or services. A contract is said to be binding if it is quid pro quo, i.e. if it involves an exchange of goods or services for something of comparable value, usually money.

It is often used to describe corrupt practise, where favours (notably political or sexual favours) are illicitly given in exchange for cash. I.e. 'you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours'.

The 'turn' link with 'quid pro quo' was played on by the scriptwriters of the 1991 thriller movie 'The Silence of the Lambs', starring Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins as Clarice Starling and Dr. Hannibal Lecter:

Hannibal Lecter: Plum Island Animal Disease Research Center. Sounds charming. Clarice Starling: That's only part of the island. There's a very, very nice beach. Terns nest there. There's beautiful... Hannibal Lecter: Terns? If I help you, Clarice, it will be "turns" for us too. I tell you things, you tell me things. Not about this case, though. About yourself. Quid pro quo. Yes or no?

Well time for my once-weekly post. Got a new (to me) ATV, was a aunts, 8 years old and only had 659 miles/ 174.8 hours... Lot of medical problems, father has neck surgery on wed. , grandfather got run over by a cow yesterday, was stupidly trying to load them by himself, was pretty banged up, had to have 5 stitches on his neck, while being examined found a mis-alignment in his vertebrae, awaiting word on that though.

Ken, did you here about way back in 1972 the famous Classical Saxophone player  Sigurd Raschér was going to perform on live TV (PBS) a concert with the Philadelphia String Quartet?  Everything was set to go, the concert had been well publicized and it was estimated that 7 million people would be tuning in for the "one of a kind" concert.  Unfortunately, a group of concerned parents petitioned the TV station against the broadcast and the concert was cancelled just a few days before it was to air....  Yep!  They said there was already too much  (are you ready?)  Sax and Violins on TV!

(Gulps rest of coffee quickly and heads out the door!)

Later!

Thunk, Hey Ray, was that a C thunk? Or a C Minor?

Well, it is my own fault. I said I wanted to work some day shifts.

A case of be careful what you wish for?

Boy you got that right Jeffery! Seems I was drafted today! Bang Head Seems I have to work at St Charles the rest of the week and I have to be there at 6:45 AM Tuesday! That means I have to be up and moving around 5:15 AM, it is only a hour drive? Bang Head Will be there the rest of the week with no set hours. I do plan on milking the overtime!

Ken, Life-Like/PK 1000’s had an issue for 2 years where the wheels were defective on their locomotives and rolling stock.  Somehow the wheels were cracking and causing the wheels to go out of gauge and squeal or constantly derail.  When LL was bought out by Walther’s they stopped replacing the 1000’s wheel issues.  One of the members of my train club bought a bunch of PK 1000’s and has been slowly changing all the wheels out with Intermountain replacement wheels.  It’s sometimes hard to see the cracks but if you spray them with developer you can see them.

Lee, great tip! Mine has a huge chunk missing from a rear wheel on the outside edge! Never equated that to causing the random squeaking Any idea on a part number?

Now my P2K SD7, not likely i'll let that one go. It's been custom painted and detailed for BN. What's wrong with your SD7? I've had my SD7 and 2 SD9s apart a few times so I know what makes them tick. I'd like to find other P2K SD7/9s (or BLIs or RPP shells and chassis) to build up a few more for BN. If you decide to off-load that SD7, I could work it in a trade.

Vince Well at this point I don't really have a clue.Well I sort of do? First time around I thought the old motor died to being driven hard and but up wet so to speak. Was drawing way to many amps and BBQ 2 decoders. Happened to have a fresh PK 2 SD 7 motor (well it was used) and tested the motor and amp pull was fine. Installed the motor and amp pull shoot threw the roof! Thinking it was the gearing in the engine, pulled the drive shafts and tested again!  Amps where still way to high? Bang Head Forget the specks off hand, but not decoder friendly! So now it sits on the mountain (whee on my junk goes) waiting for a answer to what the real problem was.

Paul. Thanks for the answer and Barbara will be in my Angel Yes that she is doing better. I use to have a Barb but things did not work out for us. Yes, we where Barbie and Ken! Sure got some snickers when we had our Christmas Stockings made. Whistling

See you all later, 5:15 is going to becoming sooner that I am ready! Sigh

TA462

I worked all weekend which kind of sucked but it was easy OT.  Got the Trans Am stored for the winter yesterday, that kind of sucked too.  Put the winter tires on the Cobalt, my little commuter car for going back and forth to work.  Cleaned out the garage at the house so the wife can fit her Jeep in it, she is going to store it as well.  Changed the oil in my truck, the wifes new daily driver and listed my S10 and her Alero on Kijjiji for sale.  I don't need them anymore.   Busy weekend.

I found a 72 VW Super Beetle in incredible condition that I might buy.   I've owned a Beetle years ago and had a lot of fun with it.  Being a muscle car guy it is a drastic change, lol.   A guy contacted me about restoring a 69 Camaro Pace car but hur pain. I pute wants it done in a year.   I could probably do it if I worked on it for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week but that isn't going to happen.  Told him I could do it in two and for him to think about it.  Also recommended a couple other places he might try.  People honestly don't know how much work and time it takes to actually restore a car, properly.  I'm on afternoons this week so its going to be good to sleep in for the next two weeks.   Smile, Wink & Grin

I feel your pain Crying I put my Trans AM to bed last Monday.

Did I miss something, Are your parents giving up their beloved house, or is it another house you are talking about?

You apparently missed something. My parents sold their house to a close relative. My parents have a lifetime lease on the east wing. The relatives will be rebuilding the west wing to suit their taste, meaning the 60's era pine paneling is going bye-bye. All the wiring (pre-1974 code) will be brought up to code, walls (including interior) will be fully insulated and sheet rocked, the two full baths will be turned into one large bathroom. All the appliances will be ditched and replaced with new. The west wings central air/heat will be completely replaced. The heat pump was last changed out in the mid 80's. The system in the attic is a 60's era Chrysler. The water heater is an antique from the early 80's and spends much of the time turned OFF as my father is afraid it could pop. The west wing was built in the mid 60's as a Ranch style home. My father and I converted it to a suburban style in the early to mid 70's. Good use of the first half of my teen years (12 - 15). T'wasn't easy! Construction on the newer east wing didn't start until the late 90's and was pretty much completed in 2004. We're still chasing down a few isolated bugs here and there but nothing out of the ordinary unless you count the screwdriver that was left in the central vacuum line. That was my father's screw-up.

You know we got a huge new deal without cable company and there are some 250-300 channels..and nothing we either: want to watch, haven't seen before, is  a new theme on a subject we have already knowledge of, or anything to entertain us! Remeinds me of the old song "...57 channels and nothing on.."

Out here with Dish - 101 to 9608 and nothing is on. Got some GREAT Sirius satellite radio channels though! Classic rock from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's are my favorite. I record them on cassette tapes and listen to them in my van when I go to town for some reason. I have a small battery powered cassette recorder to listen to them on but it's all I can afford. I'd love to find a halfway descent in-dash or under-dash AM-FM-Cassette stereo and some good speakers to put in there but that's something that will probably never happen. That takes money and that's something I don't have to spare. A kid flipping burgers at McDonald's for minimum wage makes twice what I have to live on for a month. That's pathetic but it's true!

Evening All,

Did the MRI today and I was surprised how little the unit was.

I called the Doc's office to find out where the paperwork was that I should of received last Fri. I finally got hold of the lady around 2 PM and she says I mailed it today. I'm not real happy but OK, I will have it in a day or two. A hour later  she calls and says I need to make sure our dates are the same for the paperworkAngry I hate being lied to. So it will go out tomorrow and I will see it by Friday.

My lights came in today. They have a Black and Red wire that comes out of the light pole. I need to solder the provided resistor to one of the wires. I assume it should be the red wire that it goes on. Is this correct before I solder the resistors on the wrong wire?

Paul- Glad your wife is doing better.

Hope everyone has a good night and prayers for those in need.

I am sore as rain/Storm Umbrella is coming tomorrow..looks nasty.  MOH is sore also... BUT 70s are coming for the end of the week!!!

Tomorrow I will stop and get some other new info on health care plans, besides the planned thingy we are doing with our friend. MOH is trying to find out what is available through work that we turned down when MOH had other coverage. We may have to eat the quadrupled insurance cost as it does cover both of us and may be cheaper than other plans. SO far all MOH could find online is coverage to pay bills for " catastrophic illness, accidents, or to cover bills while recovering from illness {like AFLAC or maybe it IS AFLAC}", BUT not for general health insurance..maybe they don't offer it? They should..somewhere as they offered it 2 years ago, but maybe this is all they were offering? SO confusing giving me/us a headache.

MOH is off tomorrow and if it is not raining, we put up plastic to cover the damaged corrugated plastic covering the porch.

Evening guys

Not a whole lot doing today. didn't really feel like doing much of anything.

Ken, As far as the rolling stock I'm looking for, I don't even know. It would depend on what you have. So it would probably work better if I knew what you have you'd wanna swap for.

Now my P2K SD7, not likely i'll let that one go. It's been custom painted and detailed for BN. What's wrong with your SD7? I've had my SD7 and 2 SD9s apart a few times so I know what makes them tick. Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

So much for my plans this morning! My father called shortly after I posted. He needed me to come down and put together a power miter saw for him. That took the better part of an hour. I swear the man couldn't close an umbrella without instructions that were typed in triplicate, lost, found, sent out, queried, sent back, put on public display then buried in soft peat for three months and recycled as fire lighters before new instructions were issued. He then wanted me to set it up so it could rip sixteen foot 2x6's. I had to explain to him that that couldn't be done with that type of saw. He then described a saw he had used years ago to do that sort of thing and that it was very similar to this one. I then had to explain to him that what he had used was a radial arm saw and that this model miter saw could NOT be made to be used in that fashion. It's virtually impossible! We then spent the rest of the morning rebuilding a twenty-five plus year old home made table saw (70's era Skilsaw bolted underneath a homemade plywood table saw deck complete with 2x2x16" rip fence) that's bolted to the top of an old Steelcase office desk. We, rather I, got it working and I put a good blade on it. Some of the blade mounting hardware was missing and we had to cobble together a replacement. The blade is on as tight as I could get it. The saw has safeguards that are more than sufficient to stop a runaway blade should that occur. Still, we're both going to be standing back when the first couple 2x6's are pushed through. It may work, it may not. The blade may stop dead as a hammer when it hits the first board. But that won't be today. After that we got cleaned up a bit, collected my mother from the couch (yes she's back home holding the couch down) and we went to town for a late lunch then to a lawyers office to sign over the house to the new owners. Got back home about an hour ago and I'm completely wiped! Working on the layout or anything else for that matter is the farthest thing from my mind! I hurt all over and could care less if the walls fell down.

I have a tickle in my throat.

Or, I have a frog in my throat.

Maybe it's a tickling frog in my throat.  {Name brand OTC med to break up the mucus to the rescue!}

SPemt half the day on the phone tracking down health insurance coverage. Since mine is not just doubling, not just tripling, but quadrupling {!!!!} I am investigating other options. We may be left without coverage for 2 months as some what to start as though never had this year for just the 2 months{!}, no prorating or nothing...a whole years worth of costs in 2 months{!}...

Gave me a headache I tell you. The easiest was talking to Social Security themselves, but they only refer you to forms and plans,,dealing with the plans is something else!

Tomorrow we go to a  seminar about a health plan and train nut friend is going to, hes in similar/same boat.

Dinner will be 4 oz chicken ***, one salt potato {small and baked} and steamed broccoli spears.

Best go for my walk and get the mail.

Curt, the stock car you said you bought with sound, were those PRR K-9‘s?

Todd, those drain fly eggs are typically well protected against soap, even Lysol or pine oil.  Bleach is about the only thing that will penetrate the eggs and kill the larvae.  You should leave the bleach in the trap overnight then flush it out in the morning with cold water.

Did you know for killing germs and surface virus Bleach is #1, but did you know Pine Oil is #2.  For those of us in the military who had to scrub a head (or for you grunts a latrine) pine oil was our weapon of choice.   I would have addressed the USAF guys but they just hire contractors to do that kind of work, LOL…

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a nice bnowl of hot oatmeal w/ brown sugar, a couple sausages, and lots of dark roast coffee (Seneca Lake Blend would good) in a R&GV RR mug.  Please and thank you Ma'am...

Been sunny outside here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  The weather prognosticators say it is Partly Cloudy which means it will be cloudy just as soon as the sun shine goes around the stupid Maple tree next door which doesn't want to loose any of it's now bright yellow leaves yet and hits the solar panels...

Not sure what all I will do today as I have some bookwork to get done for the MLK Meeting tomorrow night,  a few phone calls to make, and groceries to buy.  Would also like to go get the 4x4's I will use to create the raised vegetable gardens out back.  Need to do some house cleaning like some others on here, and would very much like to find some time to spend in the train room as well.  We shall see...

Later!
