The last couple of days have been sort of strange. You know, busy, but not a lot to show for it at the end of the day. We didn't get to go railfanning on Sunday as we spent the day with my nephew and his family. Naturally we had a great time and enjoyed the kids. But the wife has brought up the fact that we didn't get to railfan and should take a day and go to either Cresson, PA or Conneaut, Ohio. Not a bad idea if you aren't the person having to do the driving. (Note: she usually takes a little nap during these jaunts)

Yesterday was our usual breakfast out and then spent the rest of the day shopping and running errands. Then did a couple of loads of wash. Today we were up early as she had an appointment at the hairdressers. Decided on breakfasy out again. (Are you getting the idea yet that breakfast is probably my favorite meal) Now I'm finishing up the rest of the wash and then we will do some cleaning of the living and dining rooms.

Stan:  I was pleased to see you posting again. About a week or two ago, I had been thinking that you had not posted in some time. Sorry to hear about your Dad. Hope to see more of your paintings in the future. Maybe I'll be able to stop at the Museum during our next wine run to Seneca Lake. Don't know when that will be however, as I have a nice stock at the present time. That's about it from the "Burgh", time to get something done around here.    Tom

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the breakfast buffet this morning, but please do bring me my dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug.

Currently a pleasant 71°F here in the Finger Lakes with a high predicted around 77°F later this afternoon.  We got a half an inch of much needed rain yesterday so I will have to mow lawn again by week's end.

Lee, glad to hear you folks finally got a gully washer!  1.5"...  Sounds like too much too quick, but still welcomed I bet.

Jeffrey and all the rest of you in the gulf area, stay safe and dry!

Vincent, Happy Birthday, a day late!  Hope it was a good one.

My new "dumb" phone arrived yesterday afternoon, so I spent several hours trying to figure out the 118 page manual for it.  All in English too.  It is written in Techese so it is darn near impossible to get a simple or concise answer on how to do anything with it.  Goes something like this:  Page 6, "To turn on your phone, press and hold END for 3 seconds and then release as per the directions on page 56".  Page 56, "before following the directions on page 6, be sure to check for reception strength as per per page 79".  And so it goes...  I managed to "Activate" the darn thing last night but that was about it.  Now they want me to set up "Voice mail"!  I don't want "Voice Mail" as people can leave a message I won't read on the Landline phone.  Found a couple yesterday that had been flashing a few days....  hey I check at least once a week...  Well more like every couple of weeks.  I'm retired and don't have to put up with needing to answer the phone if I don't want to!

OK, Now I have to see if I can figure out how to shut off, Block, say no to text messaging...  I don't think they tell you how to turn it off.

Have a good one!

It's a light rain here in Mississippi right now, some say we are going to get it bad, some say we are just going to get the fringes. In any case, I'm ready. For now, though, just stopping in to say hi.Cool

Sir Madog

Jeff - stay safe. I hope Issac dies down before it hits your area.

If it does what hurricanes usually do, a sweeping turn north spreading out as it goes it'll be a little bit of wind and lots of rain by the time it gets here. So far it doesn't look like it'll turn back out into the gulf, then turn north and come straight on over Holly Beach and follow a line toward Shreveport like Rita did. If it does that we'll be in big trouble indeed! Our saving grace in 2005 was the high number of volunteer fire departments we have. Had it not been for their selfless service in going out to clear the roads of trees and debris the fight to get power and phone service restored would have taken weeks instead of days. The twenty-five departments in Vernon parish including Sundown, Caney, Burr Ferry, Evans, Sandy Creek, New Llano, Sandy Hill and Anacoco fire depts had all the roads in their collective areas cleared inside of a week. The hours were long and the supplies, including fuel were short. Had it not been for the service of these volunteers the restoration of services to many areas would have taken much longer than it did. Add to that they were operating without a central command as 911's communications including radio was all but wiped out. The fire depts were relying on their own mobile radios for communication. Each area operates on it's own frequency with 911 tying it all together. So what we had was each area operating on it's own with no way of knowing what the other areas were doing without messengers going back and forth.

Jeff - stay safe. I hope Issac dies down before it hits your area.

Morning Coffee in the Diner

Good Morning!!!

Today is Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

Today is the 241st  day of the year on our current calendar. There are 119 days left til Christmas, and 125 days remaining until the end of 2012.

many have AVATARS on their profile, SO:

avatar

- (modern meaning) iconic or alter-ego used instead of real identity, especially on websites - Avatar is an old Hindu concept referring to the descent or manifestation of a god or released soul to earthly existence, typically as a divine teacher. The word history is given by Cassells to be 18th century, taken from Sanskrit avatata meaning descent, from the parts ava meaning down or away, and tar meaning pass or cross over. In more recent times the word has simplified and shifted subtly to mean more specifically the spiritual body itself rather than the descent or manifestation of the body, and before its adoption by the internet, avatar had also come to mean an embodiment or personification of something, typically in a very grand manner, in other words, a "...presentation to the world as a ruling power or object of worship..." (OED, 1952). The virtual reality community website Secondlife was among the first to popularise the moden use of the word in website identities, and it's fascinating how the modern meaning has been adapted from the sense of the original word.

Happy B-Day Cake Gift to Vincent!!!

Have a GREAT day!!!

  Evening Folks,

Well the A/C repair guy came out and the outside unit needed a new motor. Naturally it is a very popular one and he did not have anymore on the truck. He had to drive into Reno (30 miles) to get a new one. Got it fixed at a cost of only $326.00Sigh Stopped at the hospital and was only 3 hours late for work, so decided to just go home. Like Ken, it was slow and I would not make much anyway.

Sure hope Issac dies down a bit before it its you guys down south.

Happy B-Day Vincent

Prayers to all in need.

Evening Jeffery. You seem to be the only person here tonight.

 Flo, Beer Pleases.

Not a lot to talk about tonight. Work was kind of slow tonight. That means I did not make squat! There a phases  for you to look up Galaxy. Have a pretty good idea of where it came from!

Well Great, my Digitrax System just died! Only hand 2 engines running and a few sound engines in the back ground. Then all went quite? Power light is not on, that is the first time I have seen that happen! So either the power supply took a dump, or the DB150. Looks like I am back on the Bachmann E Z Command again! I am not surprised, it not been working just right for awhile now.

I just hope my PR 3 will work as a stand alone. I only have 3 engines that the Bachmann can control.

You can get parts for that Onan Genset at a marina that services the Comercial fishing boats.  You can also get parts from the company that bought Onan, I think it was OMC...

Thanks for the information. I'll pass it on to my father.

Just got this flash from my weather service. It's something all of us along the gulf coast should be thinking about.

...TROPICAL STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT...

...PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

PREPARATIONS SHOULD BE MADE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE...BEFORE CONDITIONS DETERIORATE. KEEP INFORMED WHILE LISTENING FOR POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SECURE LOOSE OUTDOOR OBJECTS WHICH CAN BE BLOWN AROUND. STRONGLY CONSIDER EVACUATING IF YOU LIVE IN A MOBILE HOME...AND DO SO IF ORDERED BY LOCAL OFFICIALS.

CLASSES AT LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY AT EUNICE WILL BE CLOSED TUESDAY.

&&

...PROBABILITY OF TROPICAL STORM/HURRICANE CONDITIONS... THE CHANCE FOR HURRICANE CONDITIONS AT THIS TIME (for my area) IS LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO 11 PERCENT. ALSO...THE CHANCE FOR TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS AT THIS TIME IS UP TO 75 PERCENT. THIS REPRESENTS A GENERAL UPWARD TREND SINCE THE LAST FORECAST.

...WINDS... AS TROPICAL STORM ISAAC MOVES CLOSER...THE THREAT FOR SUSTAINED HIGH WINDS IS LIKELY TO INCREASE. THE LATEST FORECAST IS FOR WINDS TO REMAIN BELOW TROPICAL STORM FORCE. HOWEVER...A SLIGHT JOG TO THE WEST MAY PUT SUSTAINED TROPICAL STORM WINDS INTO THE AREA FROM LAKE CHARLES TO FORT POLK TO ALEXANDRIA.

Well my father went out to his RV this morning to check if the generator would start. It did. so then he shut it down and pulled the fuse out of the faceplate on the genny. The fuse fell out of the fuse holder and ended up in a little hole at the bottom of the well where the fuse fits in. Now I wonder why he pulled the fuse. The thing started, it worked, obviously it was good. Why pull the fuse out? Well he wanted to see if it was good. God, I know this man isn't an idiot, so why does he act like one? Anyway, he reached in with a needle-nose pliers and managed to ground the hot contact of the fuse clamp to ground and the sparks flew! At that point I finished with mowing the grass and stopped to see what he was doing. Well I made the smart play. I took the face plate off the panel and used a small magnet on the end of a plastic rod to fish the fuse out then put the panel back on. I used a small piece of electrical tape to secure the fuse to the little holder it's in so it couldn't fall out again then put the fuse and holder back into the front of the genny. He went to start it from inside and it wouldn't do anything, not even click. I checked all the fuses in the vehicle with a fuse tester and used a multi-meter on the ones the tester wouldn't reach. So then he calls my nephew and tells him he needs him to come down to see what's ailing it. Now this man knows what bait to use. He hung a case of beer out there as a reward and the boy came running! Within an hour he found the problem. My father had fried the circuit board that controls the starter. No new board for a twenty-five year old Onan genny. So he rigged a bypass on it so it can be started and cut off. It starts now and it works! So my Father has a working genny in case the coming storm takes out the power. It's not much but it can run both fridges and a couple of lights and fans. That's all he needs it to do. Can't run a TV on it. We tried that when Rita came through in 2005. I had to carry the TV out of the house before it burned the place down! The genny puts out AC but it's not clean. The circuit for that is built into the RV but doesn't seem to work with outside appliances.

Since 5:00 pm we've been getting short showers here. Some light, others heavy. Looks like it's starting.

Jeff: Is Issac going to be a problem in your area of Louisiana?

It looks like we could get some fallout from it. My father is trying to get his generator in order in case he needs it. It started OK for a test this morning but not it won't even click. We checked all the battery connections on the RV. They're clean and tight. Checked all the breakers and fuses. They're good. So it's most likely a loose connection back at the generator. That will be checked today.

With the very real possibility of coming buckets of rain I got the mowing done this morning while the grass was still manageable. Not something I really wanted to do but it had to be done. Otherwise I'd need a bush hog to mow the yard. Needless to say my right leg isn't very happy with right now.

Afternoon guys

Well today's my 23rd birthday, but I haven't done anything special. I don't know if my folks will take me out for a birthday dinner on account of Issac.

Be back on later.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Afternoon tea and crumpets

Good Afternoon

Well well

A do-nothing day for me. Have a headache, nothing unusual about that.

Train Nut friend came for a visit. Actually, he came to waste time while the wifey worked before she drives him for nerve injections in HIS back like I get cause he has back issues too. His first time. He will see what he thinks about it.

We solidified our plans to go to Steamtown for the LAbor day Rail Fest this year. usually by now we have been to Steamtown, but didn't go yet. It will be the last day to see steam run excepting a few excursions for leap-peeping and Xmas. We will go there AND  MAYBE go to the Houdini Museum in Scranton too, then go to the Red Robin Diner for a tasty burger.

Well, i go rest now.

Prayers and thoughts for those in need, and prayers/thoughts for those who have passed.

Have a good afternoon

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the Blueberry waffle with NYS Maple Syrup and a side order of breakfast sausage, please.  Oh, yes, I will need my dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug as well!

Very sad to hear about Wolfgang Dudler.  I have some working switch stands made the way he did them on my layout.  Always fun to see the look on peoples faces when I throw the turnout and they see the tiny stand change positions.  I will need to do more of them on the new section!

Currently 76°F here in the Finger Lakes with a high of 81° later.  We have some thunderboomers scheduled for this afternoon and more all through the evening and night they say.

I shall be getting the NMRA Division newsletter ready to mail and then hiding out in the train room most of the rest of today.

Stay safe out there!

Good morning. It's 79° with 85% humidity. A tropical storm watch is in effect. The chance for rain today is small. It'll be partly cloudy and the high will be 95° but will feel like 102°.

Nothing much going on today. I think I'll do some catching up on my movie watching. The bones in my right leg are letting me know they're unhappy and it hurts just to stand. This morning I'm watching my three GP9F's slowly pull a string of twenty-one cars around the layout.
