Its 6:30 pm over here in OZ and I managed to mow the lawn and pull some weed today. The sun is out and they say its staying until Tuesday. Paradise

No work on the models today though I did manage to find some dry transfers with numbers and letters of different sizes on them. They'll be handy when the time comes for my RS3.

Jeff... Good pick for the nights viewing. I feel that anything staring Chuck Norris is worth watching. He is a bit of a legend over here with quite a huge fan base. Geez i am surprised a religion has not popped up with him on the alter. Laugh Good luck with the Norscot... With all that alcohol around it I hope it doesn't go off the rails. Dunce

Gidday all, A large mug of "Pussers Kye"please.

hon30critter Dave, apart from one time, never really took notice of the actual temperatures while working up in Fiji, except that it was HOT. First time I went up, left home early 23F, got off the plane, that afternoon,  at Nadi  88F. I had to "Google" Fiji temperatures to respond to your comment and see that the year  averages between 65 & 89F. The one time I did know the actual temperature was when one night it dropped to 54F, myself and another young Kiwi were still in our tee shirts and shorts supping on a cold "Fiji Bitter" after work,  thinking that it was great and quite amused that even the expats were doing their "Scott of the Antarctic" impressions.

The only other rail photo I managed to get.

Derailments were not uncommon. The track work was quite run down, loose and missing rail spikes, bolts and even fishplates.  Talking to an Aussie who was over to try and get Fiji Sugar more efficient, and mentioned to him that I would have thought that with the wages that the locals were paid that it would have been relatively cheap to employ a few "surfacemen" to keep the maintenance of way up to scratch. It wasn't that easy he pointed out as the nearest village to each derailment supplemented their income by supplying labour to get things back on track!!

Fiji is a great place to work, military coups and all, the locals are real friendly once they get to trust you, but boy patience is required, "Island time" is hard to used too. My wife got quite used to me being away for 6 or 7 weeks while on a 4 week contract!!. Laugh Laugh.

Here's a link to more "cane trains" if you're interested.

http://members.multimania.co.uk/railsing/Fiji/fiji1.htm

Thoughts and best wishes to those that need them.

As its now 1035 hours Friday 29, and currently  32F its time for Zzz

Have A Good One Folks,

Cheers,the Bear. Smile

Good morning!

Wow, it got really dark here as a line of something-or-other passed through, west to east.  Hopefully it will prevent the temperatures from getting as hot as the forecast.  It looks like it's going to be an AC weekend in the trainroom, with the TV tuned to the Tour de France.

Best wishes for Colorado.  The news on the radio coming in was pretty grim.  Take care, Darren.

And y'know, my copy of Old Glory is looking, well, old.  I should pick up a new one this weekend to hang in its place of honor on the garage.

Good Morning!!!

Coffee and an omelet with sausage, green peppers, tomatoes, onions and cheese please. Thanks.

Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 102. Heat index values as high as 106. Mercury on the thermometer on the shed post said 103 yesterday bout 4:30. Thank goodness it won’t be as hot today.

Jeff- I’d a sure thought you’d seen Forced Vengence by now. Well not NOW. I know you've seen it NOW. But before now. I can’t remember the story of course, seen so many of the Karate/King Fu movies, but I know I seen it a loooong time ago and I haven't seen too many movies. Course back then you may have not watched too many movies either. Like me in the last 10 to 20 years I've watched very few and I mean VERY few.

JaBear- New Zealand must me cooler than I thought if 88 to you is hot.

AC was running at 5:30 this morn. Let the doggie out and I knew why. Though only 73º the humidity is currently, according to the NWS, 81%.

Phone’s been ringing with people who have setup or…Confused...oh poo. Whatchacallit.Bang Head Drawing a blank here. You know, schedule something to do or get in prep for the 4th of July Celebration. Liiiiiiiike, pick up a refrigerated truck a local packing plant let us borrow to store the cakes in for the ice cream and cake sale. Anyway, they apparently will not be in town to be able to do this so, guess who gets to do that. As usual, they make one phone call to us and it is now our, or should I say MY responsibility to get it done or find someone else which I have learned is a waste of time to call anyone cause they can’t. Until, of course, AFTER it’s done, then you hear countless “well why didn’t you call me”’s. Then the lady that was supposed to have the ad flyers for Fall Festival made so they can be distributed called and couldn’t pick them up from the printer so guess who had to do thatGrumpy. Got a text from the guy who is doing the BBQ for the Church (of which I am involved as a griller) called and he is out of state, won’t be back until Saturday. Oh and guess what, he forgot to get the food permit. So, in to town again I goGrumpy. Now, I have to pick up the meat for the Church as well because he probably won’t be back until Saturday after noon and the place closes at noonGrumpy. Luckily, it is from the same packing plant that the Foundation borrows the truck from, so I get to combine tripsHuh?. And it is just starting. Now you know why I don’t like the idea of guests at this time. Refuse you say? Say “I can’t”? Doesn’t work that way. Oh no. Done it in the past. See what happens is, like a hot potato, the ball gets passed to you. You say, sorry I can’t, or no, then they recite to you how they don’t know how it’s gonna get done. I say you’ll just have to keep looking for someone. Then when you get there and it didn’t happen, somehow it’s my fault the event didn't go well because they called me and I “wouldn’t do it” Or, as has happened, when I get there I find everyone asking me about it and I say I had nothing to do with it, they say the person told them I was gonna do it. Guess they already decidedI was gonna do it and the call was just to let me know. Guess I misunderstood. My fault again. And Heaven forbid you make the mistake of saying I’ll check around too. They quit looking! Then when you get there and it isn’t done, they say “you said you’d find someone”. My fault again.

IndifferentWhoa. SorryWhistling. Looks like I went on a rant againEmbarrassed. Seems like you guys are my vent too.

Ya’ll have a good day!!!!

Well by the time I was old enough to care about such movies we picked up only two channels out here. No cable here back then unless you lived in the city limits and the local theater showed only what was 'popular' with the local 'audience' and many karate/Kung-Fu (can you believe my spell checker has no idea what that is?) pictures didn't make the cut. Bruce Lee was a big hit and he wasn't going to get much competition on the big screen here so Chuck was more or less edged out unless he and Bruce were both in the picture. In 1982 when Forced Vengeance' was released the old single screen theater here had long since closed (the newer six screen Cinema 6 hadn't yet opened), there was no cable in the rural areas and satellite TV here was in it's infancy. Dishes then were ten to fifteen feet across and rates were ridiculously high. When rural cable was offered here (mid 80's) it was a paltry fourteen channels (over half were shopping, special interest, sports) with three 'premium' channels offered (HBO, Showtime, Cinemax) at $17 to $24 each, fairly steep then. The joke then was 'seventeen channels and nothings on'. Even now cable here is still less than eighty channels and over half are shopping, special interests and sports. Cable/internet/phone is over $100. My cable is internet only but still costs over $50. TV is satellite and costs a little over $80 with over five hundred channels, half of which are (you guessed it) shopping, special interests and sports and a bunch of movie/premium channels I can't afford. I have a few that are tied in with 'channel packages' I got when I signed up four years ago. Just about everything I want to see is on channels I don't get. For example, the new 'Green Hornet' has been on for over a year now but always on channels I don't get. Today it's finally coming on a premium channel I do get. It'll probably be my rotten luck that a tree falls on my dish or my receiver/DVR decides to have a coronary or my nephew or one of his friends runs over the dish.

Good morning. It's 79° and partly cloudy. The high will be 98°.

Well since the first falls on a weekend this time around my SS check is probably at the bank already. If not then tomorrow. I'll call later and find out. If it's there today then I'll be out paying some bills, buying gas and groceries. Sometime this weekend I need to mow my parents yard. Grass doesn't take holidays. Nothing special planned today. My parents are both out of town today visiting witch doctors in Alexandria on eye appointments. The Norscot dozer is still soaking in the alcohol. No effect yet. I wonder which will happen first? The paint comes off or the plastic disintegrates. I'm gonna find out.

Italian roast coffee in a SULTRY SOUTHERN mug, please.

It is going to be 106 F here today. I won't be doing much outside, except perhaps driving to the gas station to fill up some Diesel Fuel containers. I really do need to mow the orchard and bush-hog the front pasture, although it's already a bit hot for me to be outside doing much of anything.

My oxygen generator is making a real racket now, so looks like it will need to be returned. Argh!

***Chris, have any cool Garret locomotive photos?

Have a good day all.

Good Morning Modelers,

Well, for the most part we have had weather that is helping the Fire Fighters get control of things and these same storms have brought Wind / Lightning and more fires yet have started.  The newsest big one broke out near Grand Junction (Pine Ridge) and is already at 10,000 acres and I-70 is now closed near the fire

Are you in any potential danger, Darren?  I guess you've got no immediate threats, but could something break out nearby, or are you far enough from the woods that it's not a problem?

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, Something cool this morning....  How about a bowl of Organic Flax Seed cereal with skim milk and blueberries along with my dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR Mug? THAT should do nicely!

Darren I think this summer will go down in the history books as the year Colorado burned.......Sad  Stay safe out there!

Subthin ith in blossomb around these parts....  Nose is stuffed up, sneezing like crazy this morning!  Sure am glad the allergist pronounced me cured of all my allergies a year ago!  Up 'til now I have been doing very well.  May have something to do with all the high grass I have been trimming out at camp.

Currently 83°F here in the Finger Lakes Region with a high of 87°F predicted by 4PM.  Luckily all the sites I have to do at camp are in the woods so i won't be out in the sun for long periods of time.

Can't help but wonder how Ken is doing at the moment.  Prayers!

Barry I am praying also for your treatments to be completely successful in getting rid of THAT nasty "C" stuff!!!

I managed to get down cellar to the train room for a few minutes last night.  Meaning, I moved the box of items THAT came in this week from my dining room table to the shelf down cellar and looked at a few items I want to do on Sunday........

Have a bunch of things to attend to before I leave for Boy Scout Camp today, so I best get moving....

Later!

I'm fine living on the south side of Denver so for us it's just the smoke depending on wind direction.  What is scary is seeing the fire in Colorado Springs that did get into the city and jumped from house to house so quickly.  These are homes that were not in the woods and went up quickly when the flames got pushed into the city by the winds and overwhelmed the Fire Fighters.  Right now 32,000 people in Colorado Springs alone are evacuated to shelters including co-workers.  I also have a friend in Grand Junction that I am now relaying info too since he is on vacation and still a few days away from getting back...

Man, it's 91° and feels like 107°! The humidity is 46%. I got the bills paid, got the vans tank filled and got the first half of the groceries. Dang engine vapor locked at Wal-Mart again. Seems there and the bank are the only two places it does it. A shot of staring fluid and it fires right up. Long as I was moving the heat was tolerable but if I had to stop or slow down in traffic it started heating up inside that old van big time. No a/c, no vent blower, the humidity and  the temp was kicking my butt. I had the windows down but that doesn't do any good if there's no air movement. Got back home and one of my nephews friends had my driveway blocked. So I hit the air horn a few times and he comes running out to get his truck out of the way. Would've been nice if he parked it out of the way in the first place. The groceries that needed refrigeration were still cold. Got everything unloaded and put away. Now I'm just trying to get cool again.

Evening at the DIner - June 2012
Posted by galaxy on Friday, June 29, 2012 3:46 PM

Afternoon, well, maybe evening {soon enough}

Went to get scripts and pay my Medicaid Spend down, adn visit my Father. He has some calls coming in apparently someone else with his name is in financial trouble so they are hounding my father. Now, my father has never owed a bill in his life that he didn't pay some how or another. SO he KNOWS it isn't HIM they are really after.

Oh well, we get strange calls on caller ID we don't answer any more. We got a new phone line on computer modem from the cable co in a package. We keep the land line. We KNOW when they call for Jerry  they HAVE THE WRONG NUMBER! DO we know where they can reach Jerry I think it is now, and I say never had a Jerry here and this is new phone line..falls on deaf ears..TG for caller ID.

WElll that is enough of that rambling. SoapBox

Will pay some bills in the mail..some good to get off our backs finally. But soon car repairs will eat up savings! IS't it the way!

WEll, toninght is rest of BBQ pulled and shredded pork on toasty fluffy buns. Yum!

Have a good evening, and C Ya L8R!

Good Afternoon (or Early Evenin', depending on where in the globe you are)! Zoe, I'll have a BLT and a RBF, please.

Annnnd, we are at 106 F (with a heat index of... drum roll, please... 107 F (42 C)!) today. Surprise Not sure if that will be our high temp for the day, but I'm glad I'm inside the A/C and not out in the Cool sun. If those of you in the middle-country - and the Eastern U.S., even, from what I saw - stay inside and avoid any and all things outside today, until maybe 11 p.m. (CST, or whatever your local would have).

First off, my bad, JaBear (thinking I maybe been the bloke who misspoke, though I can hope it was someone else...) - didn't realize hostilities had commenced there across the ditch...Whistling Smile, Wink & Grin Best as I am aware (and that might be a bit of a stretch, a little knowledge being dangerous and all that...), those of you in New Zealand have more variety of terrain, yes? I think I heard that parts of Lord of the Rings were shot in your fine country. (And maybe I'll stop there before I get a foot sandwich going for myself...). Sounds like you're trying to keep your local MRR club on track (pun intended, but it works as is, too). Good to have at least one person like that in any club, eh?

Todd, will add you (& your visitors for the duration...) to my Angel list. Maybe you could finish off the Lone Star before they get there? (Just a thought, and do NOT tell Brenda I mentioned it...)Whistling Yep, will definitely keep you in mind for the next few days.

Flip, my apologies Oops for missing your Happy B-DayCake Did you get some train time or neat presents for the day? And can you send any spare rain up our way, pretty please? Ulrich's birthday video for you was... different (not sure about that dog...at all..). Whistling (But the dog sure appears to be having fun, I'll say that!)

MonkeyBucket (Chris) - Welcome to the Diner! Was your son hoping for a 1:1 F250, or something smaller? Have a beverage of your choice on me, please, and thanks for the photos of the switchers - are those a local production like EMD's SW series?Thumbs Up What're your MRR plans (Espee, perhaps)? (We're a friendly/nosy lot here...) WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin

And Welcome to you as well, Herrinchoker. Care to tell us about your layout/plans/dreams for your RR empire? (Scale, era modeled, specific prototype or freelanced, etc.?)

Jeff, I sure hope your folks can get together on eating what they are supposed to (especially your Dad). Otherwise, you may find yourself down there a lot, trying to keep tabs on them (and that may be like the proverbial cat-herding...). I'm sure I missed it while I was out, but did you get any rain from the hurricane before it washed across Flip's neck o'the woods?

Some good train photos being posted in here - loved Ken's roundhouse photo! And Ken, take care of yourself and we will keep the Angel candle lit for you and yours. (Amen...) Make sure your doctors are clear about what you need to do for your diabetes, as well as what NOT to do (and ask them to repeat it, if they use too many medical gobbledy-gook terms in explaining it. Better to have it spelled out ("No sugar-coating" Smile, Wink & Grin) and be sure you're doing what you need, so you can keep yourself on the road to healing up.Thumbs Up

Rob, good to hear about your doctor's report on the eyes. Angel Very good. AngelAngel for your brother and his recovery (and do take care of yourself in that category, as well).

Sarona Terry, can you send some of that rain our way in Missouri? Sigh Well, glad that somebody's lawn is getting watered. Any new pics you can post (I really enjoy yours, whenever you get some to show). AngelAngel for your son and his buddies.

Galaxy, you're almost a whole new you when you're caffeinated up real good! Smile, Wink & Grin Keep at it, and you'll likely get what you need done, done. Thumbs Up

JR, sounds like you need a bit more end of your day at the end of your day. Good to know you're still up and at it out there. Yeah

Mister Beasley, good to see you following G's suggestion (and that may have meant more than we know to the person). Thumbs Up Being in an apartment building, we have a dumpster, so setting stuff on the lid (or beside the dumpster) might be a way for we apartment dwellers to help out.

Well (very dry down there, and some cracks in what used to be mud...), I'm not quite caught up, and the phone just went off, so I'll have to get going for now. Take care of yourselves and I will be back, at least by tomorrow morning, if not earlier.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape G.

Evening All,

Finished a supper of tube steak and potato salad. Topped off with a coffee and a brownie later.

Never slowed  down today helping my son with meetings and phone calls. I was hoping to make it to  Jon's (LHS) but it was not to be. I guess there is always next week. Last night  I did order a ARC Welder light for the roundhouse, also the new Walther's PRR Interlocking tower has been shipped so I should see both of them next week. Once I get those installed I plan on doing a layout update video.

Jeff- Would a automotive fan that plugs into the cigarette lighter work for you? I used one for a couple of years (no AC) when I moved  to FL from HI. Talk about temperature shock.

Ken- Hope you are doing well and I'm saying prayers for you.

Everyone have a good night and prayers for those in need.

Cigarette lighter? What cigarette lighter. It doesn't even have a radio or climate control panel. No on board horn. I wired in a police air horn.

Hiiiiiiffft...

Got the session done...and, found that I now weigh 145lbs....eeek!!!HmmDead Of course it is from not feeling very well a lot of the time and eating very little..which, of course, made it rather interesting vis a vis my diabetes and other ills...

Next appointment is going to be a general check to see if it took..which it [curse mode]beeeep[/curse mode] better haveGrumpy

My doctor would be turning handsprings if I weighed 145 pounds. I weighed that when I got out of high school.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, a tall glass of lemonade would be great.....

Still 77°F outside and it is close to 10:30 here.....  Got nice and warm today, but I took my break out at camp in Cayuga Campsite which is on a bluff overlooking Seneca Lake and always gets a beautiful, cool breese crossing the lake!  Today was no exception!  All the sites are done!  When I go to camp tomorrow morning for the for the 75 anniversary party I will drive the truck out with the equipment just in case the Ranger has found any other trimming he needs done before camp officially opens on Sunday.

The campsites on the West side of camp are all wooded so there is much less growth around the tent platforms and leantos.  I basically did almost half of the camp today but took 4 days to get the other 4 campsites done!

Got a few small sections of cork roadbed put in place tonight.  Hopefully I will get back doing more in the train rooms after I get home from camp tomorrow!

Barry keeping prayers for you in my mind!  That goes for Ken also, as well as all others in harm's way!

Have a great night!

Good Evening,

Another sunny, warm day here with about 85F for a high.

The MIL took us out for lunch today to celebrate our anniversary. We went to a really nice place with an outdoor patio on the river. Very nice food too. It is our 30th on Tuesday and all I can say is, Where did the time go? Told my wife today I'd marry her again right now, so it has been a good 30 years.

JR, if you see this I was wondering if you'd ever encountered a Maserati 450 on your circuit. I was reading about them the other day and besides being a really great looking car they must also be amazingly fast especially for a car built in 1957. Imagine a 400 hp engine in a 1700 lb. car. It seems they also built a few with a 5.7 litre engine with over 500 hp.

Hope Ken is doing ok.

Well I actually did a little painting on an Atlas station today for my N scale layout. Sometimes it is a little strange jumping from HO to N but then when I go back to my HO layout everything seems very large. Those downspots on that station are very tiny indeed.

I've been reading another book by Ian Wilson called To Stratford Under Steam. They sure are a great series especially if you are into CN steam. I've sure learned a lot about train operations.

Well time for a little snack and then a little more reading.

Good evening.

We drove home from Cininnati and brought 2 grand-daughters with us. We have plans with them for the next week, and I hope the heat wave does not spoil the plans.

Hot? .... It was 109 F as we drove on the Kentucky Parkways between Elizabethtown and Hopkinsville.  There was one small forest fire with smoke blowing over the road, and it was under control. ( Not at all as bad as the ones in Colorado.)

We stopped for gasoline, and there was a tanning booth next to the gas station. We decided we did not need the tanning booth.

CN Charlie ... HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to you and Mrs. CN Charlie!

Barry .... Prayers continue for you as you undergo these treatments.

Ken ... Hope you return soon. Prayers for you.

JimCG .... Only  106F?

Cheers, everybody.
