Jeff, I know what you mean about gas prices. I probably shouldn't complain too much since I chose to buy a Mustang GT (5.0 V8) instead of keeping with a 4-cylinder model. Mileage can be similar, but the V8 isn't as good if sitting in traffic a lot (and I have to get premium).
Curt, Are they going to restore that FP7? They look to have done a decent job on the RS3

Still trying to find a few people to come and help me when the Scouts from Troop 1 show up next Tuesday. I think I have a Scout from a troop I did the merit badge with last fall and his dad coming to help... The Scout is already doing some excellent work in "n" scale and would love to come over and run a train for me. his dad works with computers and i would put him doing the Amtrack requirements. Probably can get most everything else I want to do done with the parents and leaders of the troop...... I hope! I will have the Timesaver out and running for them also.
Got another 5 foot of track laid today and worked on the Oak board that will become one of the 3 staging areas. Just need to Varnish the board and wait to get some homabed before permanently installing it behind the heater. I am now about 2 and a half years behind where I intended to be with the layout..... Need to get back building structures toward the AP Certificate. That will happen as soon as I get done with the Troop visit.

A cool day here but it was sunny. I got the last of the yard cleanup done yesterday as I took the afternoon off so the pond is now up and running the earliest ever.
Ulrich, remember, although we are far away, we're all pulling for you.
Vincent, from your photo the head of your dog looks lab to me especially through the muzzle and the ears certainly do. As far a chewing goes, I assume she about 9 months and may be still teething. We used Orka chews for our present dog, and found them great as he would just seek that out rather than a chair leg. While he is small he is a terrier and they have very large teeth for a small dog. Anyway it is a question of showing her what you prefer her to chew and if you have established yourself as leader of the pack it shouldn't be too difficult. As far as the incident goes of her chasing off another dog, I'm not surprised as dogs are territorial and if they find one that doesn't belong they will run them off. It isn't being aggresive, it is just showing the other dog that this is their place and they are number one. My wife has done a lot of research on dog behaviour and we have very good friends who are dog breeders. If you aren't sure if you are leader of the pack, just make sure that you go out the door before her and if she waits for you to go first, then you are leader.
Mr. Beasley, welcome home. You do have my sympathy though as I always find coming home from a trip depressing, especially the actual opening of the door and putting your baggage down. It's over!!! sob, sob.
Well no RR progress to report here. I must get back at the N scale and install those ground throws but just can't seem to get motivated. I haven't done a thing for probably 6 weeks. I have been running the HO though. April has been passenger train month on the Mortimer sub. This week is the finale for passenger, with the U-2-g Northern having the honors. Next month it will be back to lowly freight.

Steven .... It was good of you to stop in and encourage Ulrich. Ulrich is one of the most likable guys in the forum, and I'm sorry he is going through this. I agree model railroading is good therapy. I have taken many "sanity breaks" with model railroading to get away from tough times. Blessings to Mrs. Otte, too. I hope she will be okay.
Ulrich .... Thanks for visiting the Diner. We all care about you. I have a suggestion. You have some great model railroad talents, and you have posted some outstanding pictures in the forum. I suggest you work with Steven to get a picture in trackside photos. He can work with you to get a quality image. I think other model railroaders can be inspired with your skills. Well, I now have a band that is now going to do some live performances in a week and a bit. Hopefully a video will crop up on youtube about said performance..if anyone is brave enough to listen to some space rock improv.....
Tonight I actually got some time to run some trains and I actually did have to clean some tracks of fur but not as much as I feared before
As for American Standard Poodles..any we ever had were very quiet dogs...very loving indeed.
Curt: Neat photos! That robin's egg blue and white unit just gave me an idea for an F unit here...

Had pork chops for supper tonight. Flo can I have a cup of Decaf please.
I strung the buss wires under the new addition and joined it to the existing loop. I turned on power and everything powered up so it should be fine. I put 2 more legs on the addition. For some reason I am always afraid the layout is going to collapse without enough legs and I tend to over do it. I also put a carriage bolt through each leg to the frame. I also painted the 2 extra legs. The TT should arrive tomorrow.
Ulrich- I am really sorry you are not doing well. As several other people have said, you have friends here so please don't shut us out.
Ken- I like the photo of the GP/SD?something.
Jeff- I like the photo of the reefer.

Good afternoon. It's 83 here and partly sunny.I went to pick my mother up for her doctor appointment this morning. Naturally there were problems. She couldn't find her wallet that has all her medical cards in it. The last time she came home from the hospital my father had it and he can't remember what he did with it. I looked for it from one end of the house to the other (that's a LOT of house to search) and couldn't find it. I did everything just short of turning the house upside down and shaking it out. I even went out and searched the car on the off chance it was left there. No success. She had to do without the cards. They have all that on file at the docs office anyway. We had to make a stop on the way to the docs office to drop the smaller of the two poodles at the groomers. She was getting badly overheated last night due to her fur being too thick. So she's getting a 'puppy cut' so she'll stay cool. She had to be wrapped in a damp towel last night to get her cooled down. Got to the docs office and got my mother in to be seen without a problem. They did whatever they had to do and we left. I went by Churches Chicken and got her a couple of tender strips and a biscuit for lunch then took her home. My father was home from work by that time so I let him know to call the groomer to see when the dog was ready. He's probably picked her up by now. A little while later I drove my van into town in search of a gas station that didn't want the house, the first born and all future earnings. I had $20 to use to get some gas. I found a small place I sometimes go to that had it for $3.69 a gallon. I spent $16 on that then went by the Wal-Mart deli and got a roast beef and cheddar French loaf sandwich for a late lunch when I got home. Since then I've been watching some TV, checking out some forums I usually go to and generally taking it easy. After all the activity this morning my foot is trying it's best to make me miserable. So far it's succeeding magnificently. No work on the layout today.

Good, whatever you want to call this time of day.
Well, we were without internet for a whole day and almost without cable TV. I mentioned that next month we downgrade cabel TV to 22 channels and regular internet form the higher HD channels and regular 'net service special we are on when it expires next month. WELL, the cable company shut of fhte cable TV yesterday evening aobut this time of night!!! WE called them and registered a complaint that the downgrade wasn;t until the 15 OF NEXT MONTH! SO they sent a tech back out to reinstall the TV and he knocked out the internet!!! so last night they, in a service call, tried this and that and finally MOH said SEND A TECH OUT TO FIX IT....YOU broke it, YOU fix it!!!
SO, long story short, the tech came out and reinstalled a new connector end on the 'net box, then went up the pole to seewhat the numskull did yesterday and finally got it fixed. WE should call them up and ask for 1 day's credit for the day we were without 'net. I hope they make a phone call to ask our rating on service of the complaint.
So, I did a few chores while recovering from yesterday's shopping trip and waited patiently by the phone for the tech from TIme Warner Cable to call to say on his way. FInally at abut 2pm he was.
Ulrich...You know I am on meds for Bi polar disorder/depression//anxiety disorder. I DO hope you will seek out means to get such meds to aid you in recovery. They are meds you just can't take only once till feeling better, but perhaps have to take for teh rest of your life. During winter months I never go outside except to grocery shop or to DR.s office, I hibernate within the safety of my four walls of home. I would sometimes not even get out of bed..not even to use the facilities,,i'd hold it all in and not eat. I do tend to emerge this time of year, and do OK during summer months. Perhaps you can seek such attention for yourself...it can make the difference in your health. My meds make me stable, nothing more. At least I can function and not be so reclusive {not go outside}. I used to not do anything in winter and would have major highs {manic} and lows {depressive} like a roller coaster, Now I am relatively on an even keel. We are pulling for you.
Well, I have thoroughly bored you all to tears by now i am sure...so I rest on my laurels now.
Here I sit fat, dumb, and happy to have 'net again...

Went to my Dr's. Appointment (allergist) this afternoon, everything checks out OK. Blood pressure was great, ears were fine, lungs are still working OK...... etc. Got home and finished splitting two small chunks of wood I found a nice active carpenter ant colony in yesterday (It got sprayed well with wasp spray - all I have), then got the lawn mower out. Doing THAT immediately made it start to rain..... Guess the lawn will have to wait a couple more days.
Now I'm heading down cellar to the train room!

It wouldn't be much trouble to bump them into the next batch of cars I weather. I think the MNS is Dan Patch lines, and not the newer progressive rail which has a similar sceme.

I simply meant that some day I may be able to get one of them then I can see your current work close up. Right now I can't afford to get anything with gasoline prices eating me alive. Those old Dodge Sportsman vans aren't noted for high gas mileage. It probably gets twelve miles to a gallon on a good day.

I don't answer the phone at all. I let the machine get it, and listen in if they leave a message. Otherwise, I'm likely to end up talking to one of my wife's Garden Club friends who has saved the next 10 minutes for this call, and by George, she's not going to let the fact that the person she called isn't home get in her way of talking the entire time.
On a brighter note, I am enjoying the layout photos. I liked the F-unit a lot, too.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

Dave, I've been trying to house train her and get her to stop chewing on stuff for about a month or so now. She's gotten alot better about do her buisness outside, but still relapses occasionally. Chewing on stuff might be a phase. She has chew toys, but she has a penchant for my mom's shoes. I'm wondering it getting her around 5 months was a bit too late.

Todd, So I may have to deal with the hyperness for a while yet? I've always joked with my brother about a doggy slow pill (he wants to be a biochemist, not a baseball or a football player like most people think he could be) may it's something to look into for him
Ray, She does run a lot. My other dog (a lab, sharpei, border collie, and chow mix) used to be hyper before we got the puppy. Now the other dog is a bit worn out. She is extermly loving, she'll run up to anyone and start licking right away. I had another german shepard about 10 years ago, and she was an extremly well-behaved dog, and as a result I've always wanted to get another one. I choose this puppy because some of her behavior was similar to the other german shepard.
On the subject of my puppy (Delilah, my sister chose the name. I wanted to call her Eva or Dutchess): She did something that I totally did not expect from any dog. A neighbors dog got into the yard through the garage (I was putting stuff on my brother's car for him and had both door open for ventilation) and was rough housing with my older dog (Abby). Delilah was put outside by someone, and she comes flying at this other dog that's roughly twice her size. The other dog turns tail and runs (with it's tail between his legs) and Delilah chases. I was about to go after her figuring they were gonna have a fight or something, but then she came back. I was pretty stunned that she chased another dog away then came right back (Kind of like the guy in that "Bband of Brothers", Ken should know what I'm talking about). What was funny was when she got back she just sat at my feet with a "what?" expression. Maybe she will be another great dog.
Ulrich - Hang in there buddy! I have gotten hit with the "PINK SLIP" twice in the last 10 years and it hit me hard both times. Things will turn around but don't dwell on the bad, just look forward and tap on every friends door you have and reach out. True friends are the ones ready to help in anyway they can.

Sure hope today at work goes better than the last 2 days. I don't mind being busy at night, but the last two nights with problem customers. Now, when I say problem customer, I don't mean mad customers. They just had problems I had to try to solve.
Well, I have some test to take for work. I rather do them at the house than work. Hard to learn when you are answering the phone and waiting on customers!

Ulrich, my wife has gone through the same thing. (Might say she's still going through it... it's not the kind of thing that completely goes away.) All I can say is, keep plugging. Go out on the porch for a bit, until you have to go inside. Then try it down by the front walk for a while. Slow and steady wins the race.
I know there's no easy solution to problems like this, but you have people here who support you, and I presume friends in the "real world" too. Don't lose touch with them, or with us. People care.
And model railroading is probably just the prescription for this. When you feel down, you have to divert your attention from it with an absorbing activity so you don't just sit and brood. If you can't handle modeling, just read a magazine and make mental plans for future projects.
Keep your chin up! Things will look better for you soon!

Good morning. The family is starting to get back together. My wife arrived from Florence, Italy last night. She was tired after a long flight next to "the biggest high school kid I've ever seen." Her flight was packed, largely thanks to returning school vacation kids. But, it was on time, even a few minutes early, and there were no problems or long lines with Customs. Leaving Italy, though, she had a hard time because her passport says "Penelope" while her license says "Penny." Hopefully, when our daughter comes back they won't care that one is Anne and the other is Annie.
Ulrich, hang in there. My wife suffered very similar symptoms quite a few years back. Part of it was an extreme reaction to steroids, which they gave her for a respiratory problem, and then they compounded the problem with medications that only made it worse. Eventually, she was put on a pediatric dose of Zoloft, which helps to regulate Serotonin. She has been fine ever since, although I always have her double up on her dose when she's about to do something stressful, like visiting her mother.

Currently 54°F outside the door here in the Finger Lakes. Sun is even shining. This afternoon is calling for rain though. I have an Allergy Recheck this afternoon so I think I will get outside and cut down a hedge by the side of the house before lunch and then shower and get ready for the appt. The hedge is getting too high and has filled in the spaced between it and the house. One of those "every time it gets trimmed it is a half inch bigger than the last time" sort of things. Neighbor across the street used to own a landscaping business (now does that for the schools) said I can cut it back and it will sprout and grow. So that is what I plan to do. The city has Spring yard waste pick up next week so I need to get it done.
Packer, looks like you have a great shepherd mix there! Thye are very much the type of dogs you see available at the shelters saying, "needs room to run"! That said they tend to be very sweet and loving dogs, and if she is well trained will be a good and faithful pet! I have a big warm spot in my heart for German Shepherds......

It's 54F with a bit of clouds today and we should stay out of the 80's today which is nice. I saw yesterday that Atlas RR is shutting down their forums for good so we might be seeing new members here in the coming days / weeks; please help me Welcome them. If you have friends from there please given them a shout and have them come over here...

Curt- Personally for a layout my size, I think 14ga solid house wire is a bit of an overkill myself. But, I had some left over from when I wired the room so… I’ll keep it up. My previous layout was bigger, well physically it wasn’t, but track wise it was and that’s what matters here, and I used 18ga and it was just fine. Shoot that thing had more scrap wires cabbaged in there it was a no save anything job when it was dismantled. Wire wise that is.
Vincent- I agree with Dave. Except that I would agree with your Lab guess though like him I’m not sure. Just looks like one to me. Mixed breeds are overall best hassle free types. Fewer health problems and usually get the best of both breeds. Sometimes you will get a rock, but often not. As for the hyperness. If she does have Lab in her and it is enough. Hang on for a long puppyhood they mature slower than most. Instead of the usual 12 to 18 months…..try 3 years for ours. Well, almost. We didn’t actually mark the calendar. They are fantastic dogs though as are German Shepards. And no she did not calm down when she became an it. Once she healed up and felt better...vaaaarrroooooom!!! She was off and runnin.
Why is it whenever there is anything shutting down or closing having anything to do with Model Railroading at all, some expert or several, are right there to sing doom and gloom for the ending of Model Railroading. They blame Walmart and the big chain discount stores for the close of the mom and pop grocery and retail stores, but never called for the end of groceries or food all together. Applebee’s and McDonald’s may have a little something to do with the small family run diners and restaurants dwindling away, but no one calls for no more restaurants. Yah know, Packard Bell got swallowed up so hang on to your hats......spells the end for computers. Sad. I remember them well. Actually, all levity aside, that may not be too far fetched considering what people are doing with their phones now. Quick! all You entrepaneurs (or however you spell it) here’s the future……(looks around room and leans forward speaking softer)….Bigger pockets.
Besides, I’ve never read where the Mayan’s said anything at all about MRing.
