Good Morning All,

No model railroading last night, I came home took a nap and installed a wireless printer-scanner-fax for the GF.

Urologist called with my blood results: my hyperthyroid is acting very hyper.  So it’s off to my MD on Friday for a consultation.

Ken, I have the same problem in the flower beds, I mean I have a bad problem.  I spray Ortho right on the leaves and the base of the plant.  In the yard every Halloween I put down Scott’s winter weed and feed.  It’s the only way to keep my sanity in the summer.  I tried the Vigaro winter fertilizer-weed killer but it just doesn’t do as good of a job as Scott’s. You can see where I miss in the spring there will be a thistle standing tall and proud right at the very edge of the sidewalk.  In the spring and summer my yard is not a forest green, its conifer color and super thick.

Just stopped by for a quick coffee.

Ken,  I use a 2 4 D product that kills everything except the grass.  Thistles may need a second spot application in 30 to 60 days.  Be sure to read the label for the appropriate PPE and reentry period.  Keeping your pets protected.

Later,  Sue

Good morning. It's 58° and partly cloudy with patchy fog. The high will be 85° with south winds at 5 mph.

I don't feel like I'm completely over whatever it was but I feel much better than I did yesterday.

Yesterday I dug out my old MRC Synchro Sound box and decided I'd hook it up for a while. Well I promptly discovered I'd completely forgotten how to hook the dang thing up! I couldn't find the instruction sheet so I looked it up on the net. Found it easily enough and downloaded it. The listing for the CV's was handy for setting it up for my purposes. The horn and bell and some of the associated noises I can get along with but that constant prime mover racket gets annoying fast. For the moment it's connected via alligator clips to the end of a dead end spur. It's OK for use once in a while but it's going to be disconnected most of the time. Today I'm still running the troublesome trio. Seems like I have all the bugs programmed out. But you know how that goes. Just when you think you got it old Murphy pops up and smacks you right between the eyes! Today I might see how many cars it will pull. They're so darn heavy they'll probably pull everything I have. They already won a tug-o-war with a trio of Proto 2000 E units. They ripped the coupler out of the end one!

Good Morning Modelers!

*Cough*      *Cough*      *Cough*

News from the fire, it's still 0% contained but has only grow to 4,500 acres.  We have three large bombers attacking this from the air plus other small aircraft making drops.  Homes lost is currently listed at 23 with 2 fatalities and 1 missing.  The two lost are identified as Sam Lamar Lucas, 77, and his wife Linda M. Lucas, 76; they were found inside/near a home.

Here are some photos from Day #2

CN Charlie - I'm getting another Honda CRV. The one I'm trading in is 5 years old and has been the best car I've ever owned. There was only one repair needed in 5 years, and that occured just a couple of months ago. The circuit board for the windshiel wipers went bad. That repair didn't cost me anything as it was covered by the extended warranty. There really isn't anything I don't like about this car. Tom

CNCharlie

Good Evening Diners,

A rainy, cool night here with a little snow in the air but we are just happy to get the moisture. We had 3 thunderstorms through here last night which is unusual for this time of year, a blizzard would be more typical.

Ken, according to my wife, who is an accomplished gardener, you should not use roundup if you want grass to grow again anytime soon. We have used one of those 'instant grass' products made by Scotts and they do work well but cost a lot. We used it as we have a lot of shade and wanted something that would germinate fast on an area where the grass had died off. The alternative was to dig up the old sod and re-sod but it was a lot easier to use the stuff in the shaker bottle. Anyway she says look for something that kills only broadleaf weeds but not grass. We have a product up here called Killex but I'm not sure if Green Cross products are sold in the U.S.

Not a lot new here . I went to one of the LHS stores in town on Saturday. They don't have a lot of new stock but are now specializing in consignment sales.  I did pick up a Walthers gondola kit that must be at least 25 years old. The prices are almost as high as new from internet stores but sometimes there are decent deals.

Ulrich, a while ago you mentioned Smart cars. They are quite common here and until they started importing them into the U.S. we got the diesel version but no longer. The most popular new car in Canada is the Honda Civic. I guess Canadians are a thrifty lot.

Tom, What kind of car are you getting?  Always an exciting time picking up a new car. I have done it a few times but we kept the last 2 for 12 years so it doesn't happen often at our house.

Well time to go back to my hill/tunnel building on the door layout. It is kind of fun to cut pieces of foam and just see how it will look. I don't use much of a plan just sort of carve out pieces with a hot wire and plunk them down. If I don't like the look I just modify it with the hot wire.

CN Charlie

I measured 18.5 mm (3/4") of rain yesterday.  At least we didn't get the snow that the western part of the province got.  Don't use the "b" word.  This area is infamous for its March blizzards.

Killex does a good job.  I've used it a few times.  Roundup is pretty permanent.  It kills whatever it touches.  I used one of those shaker bottles of grass seed mixed with fertilizer to fill in a few patches on the lawn last year.  It worked well but it seemed that I had to use a lot of product on each patch making it rather expensive.

Which LHS has gone to assignment sales?  My favourite has always been Gooch's.

The Honda Civic is a very popular car.  According to anyone I've talked to who owns one they like it a lot.  We've got a 2011 Ford Focus and it gets very good highway mileage.  City mileage in the winter is poor, only 20-25 mpg but on the highway I get at least 42 mpg.  With our 2008 Focus, travelling at 110 kph on I95 in ND I was getting 46 mpg.  Can't complain about that.  Apparently the 2012 Focus has even better gas mileage.  Well, with gas at over $4 a gallon in both Canada and the U.S. we sure want the most fuel efficient cars we can get.

Bob - I was considering a Focus because of the gas mileage, as well as a Honda Civic. But something else came up for consideration that we hadn't even thought about. After my wife blew up her leg last Fall, she has also started to have some pain and motion problems in her hip. When she tried getting in and out of those cars, she had a bit of a struggle. I did as well, having some back problems of my own. With the CRV, the seats are much higher, and both of us basically slide right in and out. I knew when I tried to get out of the Civic for the first time, that she would not like it, and she didn't. So because I'm a low mileage driver anyway, 10,000 a year, we went for convenience and comfort over gas mileage. Hated to do it that way, but sort of demed it necessary. My niece has a Focus by the way, and loves it.   Tom

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a raisin Bran Muffin with real butter and a cup of dark roast coffee to tide me over 'til lunch.

It has started here in the Finger Lakes...  Neighbor across the side street has just mowed his lawn!  Actually his son has mowed his lawn as the Doc. doesn't want him doing that sort of thing after his heart attack a couple years ago.  He comes out and supervises.  Now this is not the nut accross the street who sometimes mowes his lawn twice in one day.  He doesn't have a working lawn mower yet this year.  He wears them out quickly!  Mine should be mowed soon, but I WILL NOT MOW BEFORE THE FIRST OF APRIL!!!  And even then under major protest!  Current temperature is 65°F, pretty much at the high for the day.  I did go outside and remove some wasps for around the house....  There should be 3 less nests to be a problem this summer....

Installed two Fast Tracks turnouts in the  rebuild section of the layout last night.  Need to find time to make about 8 or 9 more.  Everything will grind to a halt soon as Midwest Products can't find suitable cork to make the roadbed I like.  Can't use the WS foam as the pliobond will eat it, and I don't like the fact that other types are not flexible, so I guess I will just have to wait and hope.

Ken, I use the plain out Roundup applied carefully to the plants I need to get rid of on the rare occasions I do that sort of thing.  With Thistle, I usually just use a round shovel and cut the taproot below the surface.  They don't grow back on me usually.  Never put on grass seed as that just makes more lawn to mow.... Whistling Actually the grass will fill in very quickly all by itself unless you have a very large bare spot.

Best be finding something needing to be done around here and get at it!

Later!

Hello everybody, just thought I'd check in...Yes a diet coke laura...thanks.

Stourbridge Lion-stay safe. A few years back there was a vety large forest fire just south of me in grayling MI. It got very close to the town, and shut down I-75 for a while. Eventually the railroad (LSRC) was found responsible for the fire.

Terry- Sounds like your son is having fun. I've considered the Rangers( stepping stone into SF). If I can't get an NROTC scholarship for the Marines, I will probaly do an ROTC for the army and join the rangers, and maybe, just maybe, join SF

Evening at the diner 3/28/12
Posted by galaxy on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 4:08 PM

Evening

Dinner will be cheap steaks,  rice-a-roni {the San Francisco treat [Ding DIng}} and asparagus tips and pieces.

It is 67* at the airport high on the hill and a balmy  74* here at my house. Inside got up to 74* so I had to turn on the AC.

But tomorrow is to be cooler. Highs in the high 50s most of the week, though, still warm{er} for this time of year I think....

My back has had it from shopping this AM. Just when it was starting to feel better from the injections...

HAve a great evening....

Evenin' folks!  Hi Gerry, Rob...

Chloe, I'll have the BBQ Chicken, Cornell Recipe please, Baked Potato w/ chives and sour cream, and  trip to the salad bar tonight. I'll order desert later, but could use a cup of decaf with the meal.  Thank you Ma'am.

Been kinda quiet around here today I see.

I did a bit of shopping, answered a bunch of emails, and managed to get myself down cellar to the layout.  Put in a new curved turnout (Shinohara) replacing one the handyman broke when he installed the backdrop for me.... Grrrr.  Actually I moved where the turnout is placed which will lessen the curve to the siding it serves, so it will be a good change.  I also connected a couple short pieces of rail to hook it to the other two turnouts I installed yesterday (Fast Tracks).  then I added the ties under the rails.  Two ties are the PC Board ties that will hold the rail in gauge.  I should have them gauged and soldered this evening.

I got official permission to drive up near the old coal dump to finish measuring it.  The president of the trail group is going to meet me there and let me drive in.  An old High School friend who is now the County Historian is going to go over with me and help.  If anyone can find out more information about the structure, he can.

Catch you all later!

Good Evening,

Ken, the grass patch stuff is Scott's EZ Seed. It works but as noted it costs a lot.

Seamonster, I was referring to Ware House Hobbies on Rouge Road. They don't have much N stuff though. Elmwood Hobbies has by far the most N and the prices aren't too bad.

Tom, those CVR's are nice. Best selling SUV in Canada, again re-inforcing our thrifty side but it likely has more to do with the price of gas here which is about $4.50/ gallon. When I had to replace my 2000 Volvo S70 last year I intended to get something even more economical but shiny paint, and power seduced me so I wound up with a Volvo S80. Still for a six it gets high 30's on the highway which is as good as the old car but it is harder on gas around town, but not by too much.

Well soon time for NCIS, (thanks Todd/Ken) so I better sign off.

Afternoon, all.

Had the last of my midterms today. Overall, the AP Chem one sucked; AP Lang & Comp was quite good, and Spanish and History were easy well. World Religons, Band, Jazz Band, and Precalc Honors didn't have midterms. Maybe precalc will have one later, but I won't be worried about it. 99% in that class- it's my best class other than band... I don't think anyone has gotten less than 100 in band, though.

Seems everything has been breaking lately. My Golf broke a brake light; luckily I didn't get pulled over. My guitar amplifier has had something go wrong with it- volume dropped off randomly and stayed quiet. I think one of the tubes has gone bad but I don't know enough about amps to know exactly what the problem is.

Oh, that and I broke five drum sticks yesterday. Five. F-I-V-E. They all decided to go in one day. Obnoxious.

CUDAKEN: How's your charger doing now? You've had that same pic in your avatar for ages- has it ever had a hood on? Haha. Beautiful car. Hopefully some day I can get one!

Time for me to call it a night. Didn't get much accomplished today other than wiring the MRC Synchro Sound controller into my control panel so I can switch it between ON-OFF and PROGRAM with a single DPDT switch. See y'all tomorrow.

Janie, I'll have a nice big slice of the "High Fructose Corn Syrup" pie and a ... What?  Oh it has cherries in it too?  How nice.  Now I can pretend it is good for me....  Oh, and a cup of decaf as well.  Thank you Ma'am!

As of 10PM tonight, the two yards in Kanandaqua on the layout are hooked together by rail!  Had another broken curved turnout.  This one I remember breaking while removing the old track. I was fixable so it will still be used.  W*rks fine.

Jeffrey, looks like the billboard needs some repairs.....

Several of the neighbors were out mowing the lawn today!  I still refuse tio get out the contraption until April!!!  It can wait!

Think it is time to call it a night.  Prayers to all in need!

Chamomile tea in a  CSX  mug, please. A tribute to all those cool CSX locos I saw earlier today.

Looks like some of you folks have been busy.

This dang pectoral issue has acted up again, so tomorrow is going to be a mandatory rest day. Perhaps mowing the pasture the other day and pitching hay over a fence aggravated it. The one upside is I'll be running "cleaning trains" tomorrow.

Have a good night all.

Good Morning!! Coffee and the Brakeman’s special over medium and whole wheat please. Thanks.

pssst.... Who’s Laura?

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 69.

(head hung low) I did it.

(perks up)  Bright side is I have the three happiest women in the world right here in Williamsville. Yup. My wife, the lady who lives to the North, and the one who lives to the south. I mowed my yard. Well actually the front yard and the sides. Their husbands, the traitors, mowed this weekend when I was busy and, yes, away from the fort. Shane, the guy to the south was caught red handed by yours truly upon my return as he was filling the tank. He shrugged and I said…you too? He shrugged again. It's things like that that make life more difficult around here. Grumpy

I Ran out of lawn bags too. The Village had to come by TWICE just to haul thAT away. Weeeell, they came by on their rounds to pick up the lawn bags, (our village provides that service free as a compromise for the great burning ban of a few years ago. They haul the yard waste down by the lake and …..burn it. Go figure) and I was still filling a bag when they were there so I guess on the way out they just swung by to pick up what they knew would be there. But I like my version better. Police Chief was on duty yesterday and gave the thumbs up as he drove by just as I was getting started. Yes we have a Police Chief. Someone has to be in charge of the two and besides it justifies the extra 50 cents an hour. I say he put the Village People on alert that I would be mowing today and to get the truck warmed up because the bags would be cascading out into the street causing safety issues. Kinda like getting special service. I like that. You don’t get that kind of treatment in a big city boy I tell you what.

Back yard is taller due to the fertilizing the dog gives it and is bigger so I’m thinking it’ll take a while and a few more bags. The mighty John Deere has to go slow in that wilderness. Might have to take them down to the burn pile myself.

Yes Ray, I removed the Mud Dauber nest from the door frame this year. For Brenda’s sake. I keep telling her Mud Daubers are fine. They pretty much leave you alone and are no issue. Paper Wasps are a bit different in attitude but a Mud Dauber you can pretty much house train if you were willing to take the time. (ok so the last part I made up). None the less the housing complex that has been used for the last two years, has been torn down. Of course they’ve just move into the bird house on a stick on the front porch, but she hasn’t realized it yet. (sssssshhhhh)

Ken- Actually in addition to the 2-4d I’d spot use the Round up like Ray said on the thistle If you’r careful you won’t kill too much around it. Just get in close and give it a good dose.

Still waiting for a phone call asking when can we bring the countertops out. I can hardly wait. I am tired of living like this.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Good morning. It's 64° and partly cloudy with dense fog. The high will be 80° and it'll be mostly cloudy with a 40% chance of rain.

Possibility of rain this afternoon and tomorrow? Guess I better get the grass cut this morning. No other plans today.

Mornin' everyone,

Zoe, I'll have the #2 Special, over easy on the eggs, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sour dough toast.  Oh and keep the dark roast coffee coming!

Currently 37°F under cloudy skies and a bit of heavy dew falling this morning here in the Finger Lakes.  Supposed to clear early this afternoon, but the high will be a seasonable 42°.   The average for this day around here is 47° so this is normal.  Of course tomorrow night we are to have another hard freeze.  With fruit trees already in blossom, I feel very bad for the fruit growers around here. Sad

This afternoon I will meet with an old friend and we will be finishing the measuring of the coal dump.  One of the NMRA members in the division who is also one the RR history buffs at the R&GV RR Museum has been finding quite a bit of information about the RRs in Canandaigua including a set of city maps online from the early 1900s.  No wonder I haven't been getting anything done around here! Whistling

Todd, yep, I only worry about paperwasps and yellowjackets when they nest on the house and in my lawn....  Mud Daubers are, as you said, docile critters and will leave people alone.  I have had several people here last year who were terrified seeing the Bumble Bees working the bean vines.  Telling them that they won't bother anyone and just ignore them gets one a "this man is crazy" look as they run away!  Actually I like to have paper wasps around as long as they don't nest where they are a problem as they are insectivores and help keep the bad bugs to a minimum.

Best get myself moving.  have to do a couple loads of wash and a few other things before gathering materials and heading to Canandaigua.

Later!
