This morning I started one of those little 'can it be done' projects just to see if I could do it. I removed the body from my old Rivarossi U25C and cleared everything out of it to see if I could mount it on a 70's era Athearn SD45 frame. It took a little filing here and there on the frame and some rather radical surgery within the body shell but I got them to fit together reasonably well. I think it looks rather good with the EMD trucks.

All I'm going to do is see how long it'll take to run all the events in my schedule! That's 26 trains in sequence and yard switching duties, folks!

Terry in NW Wisconsin

Are you using a fast clock?

LION'S timetable (Train Register)  shows 438 daily trains, not counting trains running on the express tracks, but only the Broadway Local to 242nd Street. (Express trains are managed from a 'different tower'.)

LIONS do not use a fast clock, not enough time in the day for that. The Route of the Broadway LION has a pause button. I can freeze the action, the timer, and the Railroad Clock, and then pick up where I left off when I come back. i have not run this schedule yet: I still have five train sets waiting to be converted. LION figures, once he tries to run it, it would take me about two months of train time to run the 24 hour schedule.

Afternoon folks!

Flo, I'll have a cup of hot cocoa please.  I'll be in the back relaxing by the stove.

RAY- those are "special love gifts" from the cats when they share their hairballs with you in bed!!! It's about as good as having it *squish up betwixt your toes* when it is on the floor on your way to the *facilities* half awake in the dark of half light of night lights!

Galaxy....  Been there done THAT! ROFL

About 2 minutes to 1 the doorbell rang.  Looked out the window and there was a NYSEG truck sitting in my driveway.  Guy had all the proper stuff like the NYSEG uniform and ID hanging around his neck, so I let him in.  We went around and shut off all the gas appliances and pilot lights.  Then he changed out unit, relight the pilots, picked up his stuff and left.  All in about a half hour.  Very pleasant and nice.  I think he was  the parent of a couple students of mine.  he asked if I was retired and from where.  I told him, and he said, "Ah, that's why you look so familiar.  Might even have been one of my students, I didn't catch his name and I didn't recognize him.

Paid my House Insurance for the year.  THAT took care of my tax refund, it did!  Another week from now I will be making an appointment to get new hearing aids.  Oh Joy!  Oh Rapture!  Then I can start saving for a new roof in the Fall.

Later!

Jeff: That looks good. Your imagination and ingenuity constantly amazes me. One question - and I know I am going to get rapped in the mouth for this - what is the point? You are using 2 old pieces of junk to build another piece of junk that you will probably never use. What is the point of it? It makes no sense to me.

How's the tile job coming along, Rob? Any progress yet? When you get er going post some pics. I'm interested to see how it turns out for you!

No fast clock, Brother Lion. I don't want the added pressure! LOL! I've been working on an operational system where trains are run in a sequence. Run a train, perfom that train's function, park it. Repeat. I'm a lone wolfer for now, although I have 5 digitrax throttles. Once I get the bugs worked out, I do have 3-4 buddies that want to participate. The trains will still  run in sequence, but there'll be 4 at a time and the yard job. I plan on some sort of dispatcher-type job,  to keep the 2 levels of staging operating smoothly and arrange meets. I'd like to use radios with ear buds.My grandson and I have run some preliminary type sessions, just 2 guys using my hunting radios, and it all seems like it'll work out OK.

I ran the first 7 events on the schedule, took an hour and 45 mins. The coal unit trains, 1 mt and 1 loaded, are the only through trains in that session. I also ran the AM pax trains, one each way plus one to St Paul (staging) with 2 real minute station stops at 5 stations.( towns) , 2 time freights(1 each way) that stop in Spooner and swap out cars, and worked the yard blocking  and breaking down trains. Only a couple of Murphys, nothing serious. FUN!!

Back to the basement for session 2!

It's a real shame how companies don't want you to talk to a human.  I wonder if it's a cost cutting thing.  They've got just one human whose secondary job is to answer the phone when they're not busy with something else.  Cheaper to let people run around in circles on the phone system.  The worst are the ones that don't give you any option at all to connect with a human.  I came across one of those recently.  I thought I'd get smart and press 0 or # or * which often connects to a human.  Those three choices disconnected me immediately.  Grrrrrrrr!

CN Charlie:  That trip to Africa sounds fantastic!  Got any room in a suitcase for me?

As CN Charlie said, Mother Nature reminded us that the Winter That Wasn't hadn't ended just yet.  I measured 2 3/4" of snow.  Had to get the snow blower out for only the second or third time this winter.  It still had 3/4 of a tank of the gas I put in it in the fall.  Could have been worse.  Some places in the province got up to 8" of snow.  Glad it wasn't us.

Yesterday being Pancake Tuesday, my wife made potato pancakes and sausages for supper.  Nice thick chunky potato pancakes.  Yum yum.

Happy birthday to me.......... Happy birthday to me.......... Happy birthday to meeeeeeeeee.......... Happy birthday to me.  69.  Egad, I feel old!  My wife took me out to Denny's for breakfast so I could get my free birthday Grand Slam Breakfast.  Eggs, bacon, hash browns and pancakes.  Yum yum again.  We're just getting ready to leave for supper.  She's taking me to a Chinese buffet restaurant.  I love Chinese buffets.  She'll probably have to take me out of there on a hand cart or roll me out.  The down side is that I have to drive half way across the city and through the downtown during afternoon rush hours.  Oh well, supper will make up for that.  Our son and his family will be coming over on Sunday afternoon to celebrate with us and we'll have the cake then.  Angel food cake.  I know, I have the same things every year, but, hey, it's my birthday and it happens only once a year.  Hopefully I'll get a Seamonster birthday card in the mail from our daughter.  She drew the picture I use as my avitar when she was a teenager.

Gotta go.  Supper awaits.

What's the point? For the fun of it. Yes, the Rivarossi was a piece of junk that would never run again. The Athearn drive runs very well despite it's advanced age. The SD45 body is a wide hood design so why should I be concerned with how whatever replaces it looks. So a loco like that was never built. So what. That doesn't mean my railroads shop couldn't build one. And as I said before, it was fun. I'll have your knuckle sandwich ready to serve next time you come over.

Hi all,

Flo, a Reeds ginger beer please.

Happy birthday Seamonster! sounds like a great day overall!

CN-Charlie, I want to go to Africa too! My tax return will sort of help.

How unusual in PA during the winter-time to see Daffodil stalks showing signs of life and you have lunch with coworkers only needing to dawn your wind-breaker on a lovely day.

Got some trains listed for sale online, a Westside N&W steel caboose, obviously a CH with some details that are just wrong but it's brass so it'll sell.

Evenin' folks!

Cloe, I'll have the lasagna and a trip to the salad bar tonight.  Oh, bring me a cup of decaf too.  Thanks!

Ah, we have a birthday today!  All together now!

I just finished burning a couple CDs to play down in the train room.  One is train songs, and the other a collection of my all time favorites.  Thinking about moving my old near field monitors down there and buying a new crown amp to drive them.  I also hooked up the DVD player to the little system I have right now and took some the Dream, Plan, Build series (the 1/1 scale ones) down so they can be on when I have company over.

Later!

Good Evening All,

We fly out tomorrow and today I was able to catch up paperw..k and do a couple of other lower priority things like repairing all the extension cords that have had the ground plug ripped out. Haven't caught anyone doing it yet but I had to replace a half dozen of them. Of course one needs to cut the entire plug off and renew the whole plug. Sigh.  On the plus side with the 53' trailer out of the shop until next Dec we have a floor back and space to move.

David - it's dead easy figuring out why Jeff took two wrecks and made one. Rather than just binning everything that doesn't function correctly and is out of date, Jeff took it all apart and made a usable piece out of scrap. The U25 is a cool piece (last new loco style the New Haven bought). The satifaction of making a usable locomotive out of junk is inestimable. Of note, the trucks from a lot of the Alcos were interchangable with the GE units and have been a blessing for people in the 1:1 scale world trying to get parts for 1st generation power.

Wish we'd hear from Ulrich. I'll catch y'all later.    J.R.

Good Morning All,

Bob Happy belated birthday!  96, is that sea monster years, if so that means you’re only 26 in human years, right?

Misty rain last night resulted in frozen car doors this morning.

I just turned 45 in December so I’m trying to figure out if I’m in the middle of the age group here or closer to the younger end of the scale…

Greetings from Bradley Intl Apt,

Waiting on the flight to Baltimore, then on to West Palm. I hate rushing and can never predict traffic so we are massively early as usual. The only times I cut it closer we end up stuck in a backup or sommat.

Spent some quality cleaning last night as from here on it'll be little or no progress to the end of the year what with my schedule. I can almost see the w..kbench again - the layout - not so much. Maybe while I'm on the road Ray can come down and clean for me - he did such a great job on his own I'm just sure he'll want to show me how it's supposed to look!Smile, Wink & Grin

I see both Terry and Lion need fast and slow clocks.. Fast clock for the schedule and slow clock for enough time to make the runs. Nice Lion has the ability to hit a button walk off and then resume in the same place without resetting everything.

Galaxy - hope you feel better soon or at least that the pains moderate enough for you to make it to the next doctor visit.

Todd - maybe  you should check around for other projects she's planning before you show her what a big strong woodcraftsman you are?  Repeat after me: Gee honey i'd love to do the shower but I'm hopeless with those tiles and wood just won't hold up... Worth a shot?

I'll just get my coffee now and check in later. When things calm down........    J.R.

Good morning. It's 65° and cloudy with patchy fog. The high will be 82° and there's a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon increasing to 30% tonight.

Very odd weather for late February. It should be quite a bit cooler, instead the a/c was going at 5:30 this morning.

I didn't sign off last night due to some nut going off the road and smacking into a utility pole. He didn't take the pole down but he sure blew the dickens out of a transformer. That boom was heard for miles. Today will see more clean-up work on the layout for as long as I can stand being on my feet, which isn't long. So the work will have to be done a bit at a time. If I have time I'll paint out the PRR keystones on the Frankenstein U25C I pieced together yesterday and see about getting some L&A decals on it. You didn't think it was going to escape did you?

Mornin,, an irish coffee on a damp chilly day please Zoe. Cloudy with off n on rain, windy with a high near 60.

Things been hectic round here, I’ll try an condense it.

It started 2 week ago tomorrow, when I got a call, little broth was in the hospital with irregular heartbeat again [4’th or 5 ‘th time], and his pace maker/defib couldn’t get back in rhythm. He’s home and doing ok now.

Mother’s back been bothering her, Tuesday, she went by the bone cracker. After a couple trips, they’ve decided she has RA in her lower back an neck

Wednesday, we bought a new dish washer [$300] to replace the old one that quit last month.

Thursday morning, Beth went to the hospital, with bad stomach pain. Turned out to be an overran cyst had ruptured. May need to have here baby making parts removed now. At 22 she’s way too young for that.

Since I had kids and Mothers at work and Beth had the van, we couldn’t taker, so Bridgy [sister] took her. They got ready to come home and the van wouldn’t start. Mother called #1 n they went over an got it going [dead battery]. They took Bridgy home and the van died. Called #2 son and he loaded it on the Trailer. Then drop Mother off to get #1’s truck. Had to replace the fuel pump [$140].

Fri. ceiling fan in the kitchen started makin replace me yeasterday sounds. Still have that to do. Can’t complain to much, gave $25 for it 12 year ago and it gets used a lot.

Saturday, they delivered dish washer, we had free hookup and they didn’t bring the right parts. No biggy, I’ve hooked up several. Go over to Terre Haute [was going anyway], get the parts kit, they said would work, and it didn’t and everybody’s close by then. Finally got the right parts at the hardware store and now it works.

Sunday I wake up n the house is cold, the fire had went out on the pallet stove, furnace is turned way down. Turn furnace up, spend hour trying to get the pellet stove, decided the aguar had plugged up. Then decided the auger motor had quit after I got it apart. Monday I found a new one in Mi. [$147 with shipping]. Got it on Friday, didn’t get a chance to mess with till Sat. It fit just fine, but they had changed the wiring, didn’t have the right connectors here, so anther trip. Got it going the last Sunday morn finally.

Last Sat. I had a doc appointment, Bronchitis, 3’rd time this almost winter. Got 2 scripts, doing fine now.

Mother got up sick Mon. stomach flu,, doing betters now.

Things do seem to be improving now, other than Kc’s didn’t go to school today, stomach bug of some kind. I’ve got a VA doc appointment this afternoon, just a normal 6 month checkup.

Well best gets moving Yazee’s up,  Roary is  stirrin and this is getting too long. I’ll get back in with some good news laters. Thoughts n prayer for all those in need, hope ya’ll has a gooden

Morning All,

Flo I would love a cup of coffee please. Today I go see the Chiropractor and Dermatologist. Other than that nothing planned. Probably going to see the Seal movie matinee tomorrow.

Lee- I have found age doesn't matter as long as you keep active mentally and physically.

Jeff- I knew it was only a matter of time for the loco.

Inch- Hope tings start going better for you and your family.

Nascar- Although I live in the land of NASCAR the only events I like are the road races. My favorite road sport is drag racing. Yeah I know it's  sacrilegious here in Florida.

Prayers for all those in need.

Heretofore snowfall this year was measured in 16th of an inch. Today about three inches. Out toward Almont there are 9 inches. Was big traffic accident on the interstate there. It closed all four lanes.

Problem: There is no other paved road within 30 miles in any direction.

Oh well, they will get it sorted out, they always do.

Ohayƍgozaimasu!

Zoe, I'll have the "Old Person Breakfast" this morning and several cups of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug.  Please and Thank You.

Already been busy this morning with emails trying to sooth some very touchy nerves with on of my NMRA members.  He has been waiting for longer than he thinks he should have for something to get done at the Region level...  I agree with him, but have no power to change anything...

Galaxy... Same to you! Whistling

Races???  Today?  Hmmmmmmm.

OK, time to get going today... I see I missed morning in here by a couple minytes!

Later!

Strong coffee in a SUNNY SOUTHERN mug, please. (and leave the pot on the table, too)

***Lion, in that second race, those locos were bounding acrossing the road like some big ol' wild cats.

***Inch, there hasn't been much going on in your life lately, huh! Kidding aside, hope things improve all around. Yikes!

***Bob, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, belated or otherwise.

Had a cool thunder-boomer come through last night with good winds and heavy rain. Guess Mother Nature wanted to water her mud garden she is keeping here on my farm.Mischief

Have a good day all.

Hey! What's all this talk about getting old? I'll be 72 this October, and I don't feel old. Well, except when I try to do anything involving work. Everytime the wife gets out of the car, I thank her for riding "Old Peoples Express." May have to lay off that for awhile though. Yesterday she turned around and said "Listen Buster!" That's usually a good indication storm clouds are gathering.

We got a bill yesterday from the wife's physical therapy saying we owed some co-payments. So I called this morning. After being told to press this number or that number, got a message stating the lady was away from her desk for the day and to call another number. So we repeated the same circus with the new number. Finally got this lady who said she would look into it right away and call me back. Much to my surprise, she did in about 15 minutes. It seems two of my co-pays were credited to the wrong accounct and that she had made the necessary correcting the problem and to disregard the bill. Sometimes you get lucky and get hold of the right person.

That's why I keep all receipts, make sure they are dated, as well as any other papers we receive. We usually have problems with all our medical billings, but fortunately have always gotten them resolved quickly and easily. Just seems to me that with the advent of the growth of computers, the number of errors have grown right along side them. Okay, off the soap box.

Hope everyone has a great day...   Tom
