Good Morning All,

John, great images, thanks for sharing.

The few things I ordered form Scenic Express last week arrived in the mail, so this weekend I hope to be running trains and installing weeds and tall grass…

Good Morning!! Coffee and the #2 Brakeman’s special please. Scrambled on the eggs thank you.

Snow and widespread blowing snow. Temperature falling to around 19 by 5pm. Wind chill values between 2 and 12. Blustery, with a northwest wind between 17 and 22 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Jeff- I like the junk scenes so far. I’m sorry about the fire department. I know it was a big and important part of your life.

Well, guess I have some odds and ends to do today before w**k. I feel much better except for the headache I know have due to the change in weather, but hey, that too will pass.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

 Cederstrand:

QUESTION: On a DCC-ready loco, if it comes with a decoder installed, can it be removed and then run like normal on a DC layout?

I haven't had one yet that can't be. In fact, many of my DCC locos came with dummy plugs for just that purpose.

Rob,  We have a variety of DCC locos.   On our locos with the QSI decoders, they didn't need to be changed.  On the Tsunami decoders, you can change the CV's.  We had some MDC locos that came DC from the factory that were wired backwards. They fried a few decoders before we figured that out.  Some locos will need the dummy plugs.

What project are you on?

Sue

Italian Roast coffee in a SOGGY & SOUTHERN mug, please.

***Sue, the DCC-back to-DC thing is no longer an issue, as I didn't win the (N-Hiawatha w/decoder) loco I was bidding on. So, it's a non issue at this point. Still using DC on the N layout. I do have and really like DCC on the HO layout though.

Thanks ALL for the info.

Morning All,

Flo could I have a cup of coffee please?

At w**k today. Looking forward to hopefully finishing the signal project tomorrow then on to a little demolition and removal for the future home of the coal trestle. It's supposed to cool down tomorrow so I will probably be in jeans instead of shorts.

First thing tomorrow I have to drive to the old vet and pick up records for the new vet, do some laundry and train stuff. Hopefully no honey do'sWhistling

Everyone take care.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have the Breakfast Bagel w/ Sausage and cheese along with my dark roast coffee in a FGLK mug please.

I will be a bit busy today.......  I have to start getting everything done for all the upcoming events!

Otto, no all night running sessions on Saturday this week!  Have to be at church early to Usher and then give the Moment for Mission. LOL  Besides I doubt very much the two Sister in Laws would put up with it!

Curt, good luck with the new vet and your old little stinker!  Hows the little guy doing BTW?

Jeffrey.....  Junk yard(s) look good!  Very sorry to hear you are "retiring" from the Fire Dept under duress.  I would imagine it was a gut wrenching decision for them to not let you work on equipment.  I would not liked to have been the one to make a decision like THAT.  Sometimes it is just as hard on the one giving the news as the one receiving.  Been in THAT position a few times over the years, and I can tell it was tough.  Thank you for all you have done for people over the years down in your area.

Had a Fireman's convention outside my house last night just as I shut off the computer...  Two trucks with all kinds of flashing lights, about 20 Firemen, all with the flashing blue lights on the vehicles, and with all of them running around doing fIreman things!  About 10 entered the house across the street.  They were in ther a couple minutes, came marching back out, went to their cars and all drove away.  Have no idea what was going on except their was a white van in their driveway when I got up this morning.  An elderly couple (90s I believe or close to it) lives there.  Something must have broken.  Maybe a gas leak?  just a guess.  All appears to be well from looking at the outside of the house, but THAT doesn't mean much......

Need to get moving!

Later!

Good morning. It's 41° and sunny. The high will be 49°. We're looking at a low tonight of 27°.

Today layout work goes on the back burner. I'll be inventorying all my fire fighting gear and getting it packed up for turn in. I didn't get a wink of sleep all night. Part of it was due to thinking about the seriousness of my decision to leave the department but most of it is due my digestive system is acting up again. As my nerve damage progresses things like that will get worse. I already don't have much feeling in my lower arms and lower legs and one side of my face and neck is numb. As far as the fire department goes I feel my decision is the right one. Much of my knowledge is based on vehicles and equipment we no longer have or use. I know nothing about the operations of our new pumper truck and the new brush truck coming in and I won't be able to learn much about them if I can't get up on them. Many of our newer people have professional training and qualifications whereas I have none and I'm certainly in no shape to take the training courses. All my fire fighter training came from watching professionals and learning from them. I have not a single official qualification. I'm one of the few remaining 'old school' volunteers. Many of the people I worked with have retired or passed on and there's little use for the few dinosaurs that are left.

Hello everybody.

We saw our first snow of teh season today. Not much at all.

Lion .... Nice photo. Shall we call you a motorman? I recall that is what operators of streetcars, subways, etc. were called.

Jeff ... Sorry to hear about your retring and your health prayers for you. Your friends here are pulling for you. .... I am hearing the Federal government has rules applicable to all fire departments regarding training of firemen and equipment specifications. The rules are making it costly for fire departments especially small ones with volunteers. This could lead to less availabilty of emrgency services, and that does not sound good to me.

Rob ... It looks like you need a roundhouse with many stalls!

Working on My Bachmann doodlebug yesterday was a challenge as I posted in the thread on that topic.

Cheers everybody.

Whistling

I hear you Running Bear,

It is a time of much reflection and some inner pain.   I remember when I said enough was enough and gave up being a motor Coach Operator,  and after patting Lady Greyhound on the head turned my back and walked away.  I had a good long career 5 years on Transports and 35 years on Buses and no one was hurt or injured on my watch. which included 2.5 million miles (plus) on the coaches.  That is the way I wanted it to end and not with me making a mistake that I might have to take to the grave.

Be easy on yourself and just think of it as finishing reading a book. It is just closing a chapter and there are other chapters yet to open, although at our age they may be somewhat less exciting or stimulating.

I am with Curt here, and thank all Firefighters, both regular and Volunteer for your vigilant service. You are all very brave and courageous men who we are proud and thankful to have in our Communities.

Thank you Jeff for all the people who you have saved, helped and trained.  These things are not  to be forgotten.

Enjoy your retirement, concentrate more on your health and wait for a new window, (adventure), to open for you.  It will.

Johnboy out....................................and here is a pint for you.    Beer    Lol  I know you and I don't drink.. So make it a RBF,  and Chloe make it a quart size one not a pint for my friend.

Coffee refill, please.

***Jeffrey, others here have said it better, so I'll just add my Thank You for your service over the years.

Went to H.D. and picked up the extra tiles needed to make the wood stove base. Forgot to pick up a bag of the flexible thin-set.Dunce Have a couple old bags of regular thin-set, which I was told "would work" for this 5'x6' area. Still, with all that weight on it, the flexible is a better choice. Was all set to start on it durning the coming cold-snap.

Overcast, dreary day here.

Ken ..... I was thinking of you when I read this story, but anyone who wants a job should complete a job application at Home Dept. They are hiring 70,000 people. It is a seasonal job, but you would have your foot in the dorr with a good company with benefits. ...

Plate full of Tacos, please.

***Garry, some time back I picked up an Atlas TT w/ motor and enough strait sections of track and bumbers to complete it. That said, I've decided not to bother with it and will eventually sell it. Perhaps a display cabinet to hold locos (and cars) while not in use would be a nice storage solution. I do have a two bay engine house, which will likely find a spot on the layout.

Wind is gusting like crazy. Heard one fair sized branch crash into the roof so far. Sure hope the power stays on. It will be in the twenties tonight and I have no working generator right now.

Laid out the tiles to see how they look. Boy did I miscount. Will need to order one more box of them. Big OOPS.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a decaf please, I'll be in the back booth keeping warm.

They are warning us THAT Winter could finally arrive!  Predicting 4 to 9 inches of partly cloudy by Saturday morning...  Ain't holding my breath.  I think it will all go to the East of here, or down where Galaxy lives.  They could be closed for a week or two if they get more than an inch of the stuff down there, you know!  (Just kidding you Galaxy!)  Have they started to panic and buy everything in the grocery stores even if they don't eat those particular products???

Been a very busy and long day.  I had to go over to the Vets and pick up cat food, then get my allergy shot (different doc guys... sheesh!).  Headed down to church to deliver the CDs to the Financial officer (he does the sound most of the time), then stopped at my house, answered 3 telephone calls, 5 emails THAT needed to be done an hour earlier (but I was doing the above), and then headed over to the primary school to pick up Art and Poetry, threw THAT in the back of the car and went over to the Intermediate school and took all their entries.  Then off the Methodist Church where the Service will be on Monday.  Since the Art and Poetry Chair was not there yet had to spend an hour gentling an elderly lady on the committee from pre-judging all the entries....

She was convinced THAT was how we did it last year as she remembered THAT she and the director of the local Boys and Girls Club were the judges for one of the categories and they did that before they left.  Now, yes, they did that for the category they were judging which is what is done after the judges are given all the entries in the particular category...  This is the same lady who insisted the committee meetings are always on the 3rd. Tuesday of the month (they are and have been on the 4th. Tuesday),  The dear lady is about 80 I believe and is starting to have some.... ah, issues, should I say.  She is becoming more and more argumentative at meetings and finds problems where there aren't any.  She has said she is stepping down from the committee after the service on Monday.....  Reason, There just aren't enough people on the committee to get everything done!  Sigh  I can see into the future and I don't like what I see!

Oh, I cleaned up and put away a lot of stuff this evening both upstairs and on the layout.  Fired up the DCC, and immediately the second block went down!  THAT is the one I have been w*rking on with the hand laid track.  I must have wired something wrong.  I didn't figure I had the time or energy to find the problem before company comes.  Just means that trains will not be running on THAT side of the layout Saturday.  I did spend time finishing the Powerhouse interior, or at least as much as I think it is going to have.  If the building was going for a Merit Award there would be much more done,  Enjoy a sneak preview:

Prayers for all in need!

 Evening Fellow Dinners!

Flo, I will take a Beer Please.

Work Front Phones went a little nutty today! That is the big reason they need me. I swear every time I had a customer in front  of me I would get 3 calls in the next minute! Of course I got every idiot that called or came to the door! Bang Head Like the lady we did brakes on her car yesterday. Today she had to have the car jumped so we must have broke her battery?

OK if I was busy when you called would rather I ask you to give me your name and  phone number and I would call them back in 20 minutes or be placed on hold? Had 4 butt-heads hang up on me when I asked them for there name and numbers. Should have just placed them on hold for 15 minutes! Whistling

Big Hook Time Again. Yep, same thing happened in the same spot! Bang Head Odd how a train can run for a hour with no problems then a car goes "I think I will pick a turnout"? Whistling

Jeffery I as well thank you for your services.

Gary Thank you for posting about Home Depot hiring. But if you saw my bench work, you would not want me helping you with your wood working project! Laugh

Later

GOOD MORNING!!!

Today is Friday the 13th of January, 2012!!!

BEWARE: It is Friday the 13th!!!

The fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia (Frigga being the name of the Norse goddess for whom "Friday" is named and triskaidekaphobia meaning fear of the number thirteen), or paraskevidekatriaphobia[1][2] a concatenation of the Greek words Paraskeví (Παρασκευή, meaning "Friday"), and dekatreís (δεκατρείς, meaning "thirteen") attached to phobía (φοβία, from phóbos, φÏŒβος, meaning "fear"). The latter word was derived in 1911[citation needed] and first appeared in a mainstream source in 1953

Evening all,

Just enjoying an episode of south park with the boys rescuing the baby cows destined for veal.

Thought I'd post a pic of the old mans car as I see a few.

This is a 1972 Ford Galaxie with a 460 in it, runs on LPG.

No MRR on the horizon this weekend, but I plan on doing an order from model train stuff in the next fortnight with some trees and buildings to complete the hillside and town on the layout.

Cheers!

Good Morning All,

SNOW ACCUMULATIONS TODAY WILL RANGE FROM 3 TO 5
INCHES. AN ADDITIONAL 4 TO 6 INCHES OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE TONIGHT
WITH MORE SNOW ON SATURDAY. MANY AREAS COULD END UP SEEING MORE
THAN A FOOT OF SNOW BY SATURDAY AFTERNOON.

Rob, can you order a generator and run it off the PTO on the new tractor?  That would save maintenance on a separate engine.

Ray, we are getting hit pretty hard with the snow and they claim Erie, PA and east will get 12” more than we will.  I would warm up the snow blower or get the plow ready! Great job on the power house interior!!!

On USAJOBS.GOV there is a job opening for a FRA Inspector in Detroit or Cleveland.  I think the starting pay is $45 to $54/hour.  They are accepting applications until the end of the month.

Jeff, I think you’re selling yourself a little short.  Maybe you can’t do all the things you once did, that is something we all need to face one day no matter how indestructible we may feel it will happen to each and everyone.  I bet if you look around at the FD there is a job that needs a dedicated and responsible person at the helm.  When I was on the Wayne Vol FD we had a member that had health issues including missing his right foot.  He didn’t go out on calls but we could always depend on him to be back at the station to handle logistics and he always took the lead on the social events. If it was a big fire he would shuttle the air tanks for us to have them filled.  With his support we never ran out of drinking water, coffee, or air.

Snowing. Some. a little. A dusting.

ANd then it will quit shortly before for awhile before the second storm moves in.

I think they are actually out plowing the park? Maybe just spreading salt/sand.

We are expecting 2-4 inches, not nearly as much as RAY is. I will believe ti when I see it. The weather guessers haven't been to spot-on aobut the snow fall accumes lately.

I have to run to the pharmacy shortly but that is it {that will take all but 15 mins}. MOH comes home at 2:15 today. then we be snug as bugs in rugs til tomorrow AM when MOH has to again go to work. MAybe then we havet o shovel CAREFULLY as Oh's back is still healing.

WEll that and some laundry will be my day. I want to get all landry done before the freezing temps hit in case the drain freezes.

Good morning. It's 32° and partly cloudy. The high is expected to be 48°.

Yesterday I left my fire fighting gear by the door of the chiefs office, so that's done. Today I need to do some cleanup work on the layout then see about adding some bushes and weeds to the junk yards.  Also have to see about getting the kitchen cleaned up a bit.

Good morning All,

42F and partly cloudy this morning. Been swamped doing computer and data acquisition wiring harnesses so no puter or train time (did do the museum thing Tuesday). Off to Essex shortly to deliver and splain what I need to the dealer so we can order stuff.

Jeff - I'm sure it was a difficult decision but your reasoning seems sound. as others have already said, your service is appreciated and the memories will always be there. Thanks.

Ken - it it's picking s switch intermittently, is the actuating bar fouling something or do the points need filing/adjustment ?

Gotta run - I really must be going cause I'm late I'm late I'm late... J.R.

Good morning, Chloe.  I will have a large mug of black coffee.  Is anyone still here?  I overslept.   I slept until almost 7:00.

Ray,  Nice job on the powerhouse.  Can't wait to see photos.

The mircromark order came.  We can get back to labeling car card boxes.

Last weekend, I framed the ends of a car shop.  Years ago there was one I liked in the Narrow Gauge Gazette.

Later,  Sue

Morning All,

Waiting on the dryer to hang up my uniforms before I go to the old vet and pick up Raine's records. High today is supposed to be 60 F today and tomorrow, so blue jeans instead of shorts. When I get back home hopefully I will finish the signaling job.

Ray- your modeling is always top notchBow.

Everybody take care.
