ON our way across the southern states to Florida!
We will leave San Diego, and we will pass through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana {visit Jeffrey Wimberly} , Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and finally land in Miami Florida. Then we will take a "tourist train" to the Keys.
Somebody asked for warm, though it is NOT that cold here yet in the North...wait til February when it is 20* and below fahrenheit! SO, Warm it is... Though in February we will find it may be rather chilly if not downright cold in the southern states too.
should be a nice trip.

Zoe, I'll have the #2 special this morning. Over easy on the eggs, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sourdough toast with my dark roast coffee. Can you turn the air conditioner on? It is stiffling in here! People like it this hot?
Todd, when I was teaching, I used to do the Middle School "Activity Nights" aka: dances, so to speak. The lady who was the principal would always come over to the table and request a Polka..... I would try to talk her out of the idea as our students weren't exactly.... ah, Polka people....... One time I suggested we could do a short one titled, "There ain't no beer in Heaven so we got to drink it all down here...". She almost fainted! I would go on the mike and tell the kids to go take a break while we played a Polka. I would put on a short one and after the first couple times, all the students would go out to the middle of the dance floor (gym) and stage a "sit in" while the Polka played (they actually thought THAT was fun ). Of course the principal thought it was going to lead to violence and would immediately tell me to, "PLAY SOMETHING ELSE!!!" The "Grumpy Old Men" movies had just come out back then and I would announce the dance yelling, "POLKAAAAH" into the mike.... All the teachers supervising would get the reference. I used to have a lot of fun......
Can't we turn the air conditioner on? I'm sweating pretty bad.......
Best get moving. I have some outdoor stuff to do here at home where the temp is a much more comfortable 47°F outside....
Oh! BTW, thanks again Ulrich for your tour of Germany. It was a great month!

Good morning all! The little ghosts and goblins have gone for the year. We didn't get tricked, we've still got both our garbage cans. I don't think kids are doing that much any more. We had 14 kids this year. Last year it was only 5. I can remember years ago we used to get 40 or 50. Maybe Halloween isn't the big deal it once was. There seems to be more community centres that put on parties for the young ones and get contributions of treats. The youngsters can go from table to table and fill their bags and have a good time inside where it's safe and warm. Like others have posted, we too noticed that most of the kids said "thank you" after receiving their treats.
Back in the '60s we lived in a very small town for a couple of years. There was a lot of tricking going along with the treating. One time the kids hoisted someone's garbage can up to the top of the flagpole outside the post office. The local family-run store used to stock up on eggs at Halloween. They had no scruples about selling eggs to the kids and there was nothing the town could do about it because the store was located outside the town limits. The kids would egg the teacher's house every year. The town finally hired a security guard to patrol the streets on Halloween. He was a smart cookie, this guard. He spotted a bunch of boys with bulging pockets one year. He asked them if they had any eggs on them. "Oh no, Sir, no eggs," they replied. He told them he was going to pat them down to see if they were telling the truth. He patted them down rather roughly, paying particular attention to their bulging pickets. "Well, I guess you don't have any eggs after all. Be on your way," and the boys went off with egg soaked pants.
Well, southern California is a welcome change from the 40 deg. we are experiencing this morning. At least there's no s**w on the ground yet.

Some of you may recall, I spent a lot of time with my elderly mother in Alabama earlier this year. My sisters and I had quite an emotional experience getting her to move from her house to a senior living facility. She fought us tooth and nail. It was an awful time. ... Well, all of that has improved. I call her at least once a day, and the tone of the conversations has shifted significantly. Now, she tells me how much she enjoys living there. Remarkably, she says she is glad she found the place and picked it as her new home. I respond saying I wish she had done so 10 years earlier. ... Now, there is more good news. The realtor has an offer from a buyer for her house. I worked with him over the weekend to firm up the deal. It should close in 2 or 3 weeks, and Mom will have adequate funds to support herself indefinately. My sisters and I like that part. ...

thanks again for all the kudos on the tour throughout Germany. It has been a real pleasure for me to introduce you folks to my country (if you had not been there before). It is a beautiful country - and all of that in a state less than the size of Texas
I think it´ll be a nice idea to do such a tour once or twice a year, but it´ll be a lot of effort (in fact, maybe too much) to do it every month.

Garry - I wish my parents had gone the way your mother did. I know it would have been the right choice. Coping with the pitfalls of every day life has turned into a huge problem for them and it is really tough on my soul to see them losing the last bit of joy in their life. All I can do is to wait for that specific call none of us wants to get.
Todd - I am with you on that house, although it is just a stand-in for all what your parents meant for you. When the day comes, I will feel exactly the same way!

You know I KNEW Amtak had a southern route we could hitch on once we dumped of the overnight sleeper cars back from Germany. But I couldn't find it on Amtrak's site! I was SO bummed...
SO thank you for reminding us. WE may take side trips and "imagine ' or way over other southern routes to get to Miami-even if there aren't any on Amtrak..we should be able to get trackage rights....
It should be a fun trip...teh best part will be to see how many modelers we can squeeze into jeffrey's trailer to see his layout! Yes...the turkey,,. well who will be our host for "southern fried turkey" this year?

I filled the gas can for the chain saw and filled the truck while I was at it this afternoon. Have a couple trees to saw into firewood later this week. managed to bring the wrong gas can for the gas for the snow blower with me. The one I brought has some extremely old, stale stuff in it THAT will go to a Hazardous Waste collection next year. Don't need THAT one filled quite yet anyway. (I hope!)
Did some picking up outside and started to remove the now dying string bean vines from the deck. The broccoli is still growing strong. May have broccoli on Thanksgiving if it keeps up with the mild temps around here. Also did the rest of the printing I needed to get done.

Evening all. Just got home a bit ago. I see we're in southern California, and heading my way eventually. I would be more than happy to do Thanksgiving for everyone on the appropriate date. Thanksgivings are always a big holiday for my family, so the more the merrier. Had a side job this afternoon (replaced a leaking fuel injector on a new Hemi engine), got home a little later than planned, have to be at w**k tomorrow at 0600 as my boss has to have a MRI on his knee and possible surgery on it. Tomorrow is truck day at my job, so I'll be putting parts on shelves all day and of course selling parts too!
Think I'm going to have a hot ham and cheese sammich with a large sweet tea. I have a little research to do on the Hemi I played with earlier, still got some problems with the cylinder reactivation system, which I've got to figure out, but shouldn't be too hard as I've got the internet and numerous answers to find.
I'm going to sit in the corner booth and watch the towns pass by during the evening and night.
Time for me to call it a night. I didn't get much sleep last night and having a busy day didn't help much. See y'all tomorrow.

Looks like I might be the only one left in the diner tonight A large coffee and a toasted cinammon bun please Chloe. That should keep me awake for at least a half hour.
We didn't do anything for halloween. In recent years we have often bought the candy and then waited for several hours for maybe one or two kids or sometimes none so we decided not to do that and just turned out the lights and went downstairs to watch a little TV.
Another warm day here, we hit 50F but it is supposed to be down to the low '30s by Monday which is a little more normal. Oh well it has been a really mild fall so far.
Not much new here, just work, eat , errands and then it is time to sleep so the cycle can start over. I did do a little on the N scale tonight. I got the approaches to the bridge fixed up by putting in another riser to get the height up another 1/4". Next will be the roadbed in that area , then I plan on getting all of the trackwork and feeders sorted out for the spot that has most of the turnouts.
Rob, just reading about all those critters made me tired thinking of all the feed and water they must need. No wonder you are tired. I had to look up those cattle to see what they look like and how big they are as I've never seen one. Are they raised just for pets here? We saw some very small cattle in Bali a few years ago that might have been similar.
I'm tired too tonight so I think I'll turn in early.

Nah, I'm still here Charlie, just been looking into some auto-related stuff for a customer that I have to give a call to tomorrow. I've been looking to try to get my CSX CW40-8 into my paint shops for a weathering job (really just to dirty it up, not to make it look as hard-run as my SD40-2). Thinking that tomorrow evening is going to be the day. Of course, I could also end up getting more side jobs to do, so who knows.

... and it is going to be a bright and sunny day here in Germany, with temperatures in the 50´s! Most unusual for this time of the year, normally we are to expect the first sn*w around this time.
Jeff - DST was introduced in Europe in 1977, but not before 1996 all of Europe changed clocks on the same date. Since then it is always the last weekend of March when we change to DST, and the last weekend in October, when we change back to CET. The older I get, the more it becomes a nuisance to me. The intended energy saving has actually never been proven...
Ken - for years, I had a 12 hrs. + work day. Add to that 3 hrs. commuting time, so 15 hrs. away from home was my regular fare. 1 hour each day for eating, talking to the family, 15 minutes just for myself, and 45 minutes to keep up a minimum standard of hygiene (including shaving) - that was my day. Oh, yes, the rest was used for trying to catch some sleep. Life happened only on weekends, but not always.
