Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have the #2 special this morning.  Over easy on the eggs, bacon, home fries, a double order of sour dough toast, and lots of dark roast coffee.  I'll be in the back booth by the stove keeping warm.

Yep!  The Finger Lakes got some "partly cloudy" last night.  Saw my first snow plows/sanding trucks out on the roads.  Still some white stuff on most of the roofs in the neighborhood.  It will be gone as soon as the sun hits it.  Currently 35°F with a high today of 42°F.

Got to get the wood moved!  Seems like everything has gotten in the way of accomplishing that which needs to get done.

So, what are all the ladies doing in here today?  Oh!  Sue is having a wreath party.  THAT would explain why all the tables are piled up with pine boughs........

I had a very close call driving home on the NYS Thruway last night.  i was passing a car using the left lane, rounded a curve (doing a bit over 70) and saw a deer carcass right in the middle of my lane.  Couldn't pull left as I was just a few feet ahead of the car I was passing.  Made a quick decision to yank the steering wheel hard to the left and did a little loop around the deer and then came back over onto the road.  I was off on the shoulder getting around the deer......  Glad i was driving the Yaris which is very, very responsive and sure footed (not to mention narrower) as compared to the my old Dakota.  With the truck i would have hit the deer head on.....  Hate to think what the result might have been!  Did have a bit of an adrenaline rush I might add!!!  I'm hoping they got it out of the road before someone got killed.  One of those few times it would be good to have a cell phone so I could call it in (after pulling off the road.  I don't drive and use the phone!).

Had an interesting presentation on High Speed Rail at the R&GV RR meeting last night.  It was well researched and presented.  He said it is not really about how fast the train goes, but rather how much time it takes to get from point A to point B.  he showed how several capitol improvements such as redesigning staions can have a large effect on the schedule.

My prayers go out to Wolfgang and YGW during their ordeals.

Lion I'll your little kitty and raise you two 20 pounders....  Doing what they do best - Sleep!

Hope all of you will have a great day!

Just a quick coffee, Chloe.  Today is my wreath party.  I still have more cleaning to do before the ladies arrive.  The layout room looks presentable.  I have a nice long coal train behind the mallet.  They love the sound equipped locos.

Curt,  The fence we are thinking of is barely a fence, and will just breakup the line of site.

Petra,  I am patiently waiting for your strudel.  I am sure these guys in here will knock me  down trying to reach it first.  Thanks.

Wolfgang,  Stay strong.  We are all pulling for you.

Tom,  Nice Rio Grande Northerns.  I forgot you had that huge trestle.  You have done some great modeling.  You are about to run out of workbench.Laugh   In reference to  photos.  I try to use a tripod.  I have a tiny one to set on the layout, and regular one.  I usually set the camera on one of the manual settings.  On my Nikon, if you tap the shutter button it focuses.  I like to have my F stop as high as possible.  It gives you a greater depth of field that is in focus.  I am not the best either, but I agree with everyone else that the flash changes the color.

YGW, Sorry to hear about you wife.

Later, Sue

Coffee in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please.

***Barry, love that pic of the little tank loco.

Coyotes were right in the backyard across the ravine behind the house last night. Young Great Pyrenees were barking up a storm. The male pup has one seriously deep bark now. Anyway, I went out the back door, shouted and threw rocks at the coyotes and they shut up in a hurry. Couldn't see them, but they were mighty close. My little missiles had to be raining down around them.

Have a good day all.

 Morning Folks

 Flo coffee go pleases.

10 hour day today, boy I am going to be dragging when I get home.

Todd Well your logic works as well, but I am going with my instincts and just try some additive for now. I will try a fluid and filter change after I have funds for a rebuild.

Well!!!

There is sn*w on the ground here! A dusting..but sn*w nonetheless.

Dunno what to do today.

WHile the new furnace is not any more efficient than the older one was , I expected it would be more efficient at heating the house..I don;t think so. I think it runs more often burning more fuel than the old one. COuld be wrong. Today we go get  a HEAP application. So we can be snug as a bug in a rug this winter. WIll be January before we hear anything on THAT anyway..

MOH got good new yesterday...not a job promotion YET, but news anyway I won't mention it as I don't want to Jinx it til it happens.

WEll

Have a great DAy!!!

Good morning. It's 36° and partly cloudy with a 9 mph E wind. The high will be 64° and it will be mostly cloudy.

No layout work today as I'll be attending a holiday dinner at my father's work site. The fun starts at 11 am and continues until ??. Yesterday I was experimenting with two cleaning liquids. I tested them on exceptionally dirty track I got from various sources including some old rusty steel track. The contenders are Goo-Gone and Krud Kutter and I must say that the Krud Kutter is out in the lead on the dirtiest track I've tried it on. With a little scrubbing it took most of the rust off the steel track leaving only some of the heaviest pitted rust. I don't think track in that condition would be in use on any model railroad except maybe on an abandoned stretch of track or a scrap pile. I found that the Goo-Gone leaves a film behind. Whether this is good or bad I don't know. The Krud Kutter leaves no film and will remove dried latex paint. I think I'm liking this stuff.

Ever heard the old question 'Where were you when the lights went out?'. Well last night I was in the dark. The power went out about 7:30 and was off for three and a half hours. During the first hour and a half I had my electric lanterns going and with the aid of my LED headlight I did a bit of reading from an old sci-fi book called 'After Worlds Collide', the sequel to 'When Worlds Collide'. It's a bit of a long read for most people and even longer for me as I have to take frequent breaks due to dyslexia. Can't read much when the words are moving around and the pages are trying to merge. About 9 pm I called it a night. Well, I've bored you enough for one morning.

(decided to cut this in two. Why? I'm not sure just seemed the thing to do on this one)

Tom- I second what Garry said. Horrible photographer…..NO Garry! I meant me! The flash changed colors and gave the effect you have. (which by the way, doesn’t bother me as it does some out in the forum ) I turn of the flash use the auto settings, a tripod and the timer. Well not always the timer. It has made a world of difference. I’m still no pro and never will be, but at least it looks presentable. The picture, not necessarily the subjectLaugh. Like you, the book was hard to read for me also. Mainly because much of it was not what I wanted to do and is hard for me to digest things I find irrelevant at the time. I just piddled around with the dial up there until I got it to do what I wanted it to do and then tried a few more times to remember what I did (chuckle). Good thing about digital, you waste no film and you get the results now.

Today before w**k I need to see if I can get Missy in to get her toes done at the vets. We have the cutters and we’ve done it ourselves, but sometimes after a few toenails, she gets a bit playful and the $7 they charge is worth it if you know what I meanLaugh. Besides, she likes the truck ride across town and she likes to visit with the girls up there.

Think I’ll stop in the Chapel car on the way out.

Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

Good Morning!! Coffee please. Nope, nothing else thank you, I already ate. Been up since 0330.

Sunny, with a high near 53. Breezy, with a south wind between 16 and 21 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph.
Not much happened since I was in here last.

Jeff- I like that BW picture from yesterday morning. Especially the way the ground looks.

Ulrich- Though you won’t be looking at new yachts this weekend, I’m glad things are turning around for you. Like we said many times, hang in there my friend, things will turn around.

Wolfgang- I think you look in from time to time, so I hope you see this and know you are in my prayers.

YGW- That’s terrible news. My prayers go out.

Ken- Well, I know very little about auto transmissions, that was one class I did not take. I figured they had tranny shops and other than service adjustments, a R&R would be all I’d want to do. But, seeing as how all fluid pumped through the transmission comes from the pan and is sucked through the filter first, I don’t see how the fluid could be full of the material. Just lost all it’s properties. Sorta like if they check the dipstick on the engine and see bearing material in it, don’t change the oil because the bearing material is in the oil and will help….somehow. As long as there is a filter, it usually doesn’t get there again. What I THINK the issue is, is if the trans fluid is burnt, then there is a good chance that there has been some damage to the trans if the circumstances are right and you would have no way of knowing, especially dealing with John Q Gas-n-Go. Once the trans quits, then the customer always comes back and says “It was fine before you did something”. The flip side, is also, Tranny fluid does have a detergent in it (probably heard the old dump a quart or pint of tranny fluid in engine before oil changes from years ago). The old oil is undoubtable dirty and of course any seals or such that may be kept from leaking from gunk, will, or could, start leaking once the crud gets “washed away”. Or, it’s just a coincidence. My theory is, whatever may be wrong with the trans, if anything, is not going to be fixed, or possibly hurt further, but the new fluid could save the parts that are ok. Now, if you’re gonna spring for a new or rebuilt tranny anyway….don’t know. That’s what I would do. Others may be different, and I could be completely wrong.

Evening folks, I'm sitting here enjoying my cable broadband. The tech was done in 45 minutes, very efficient! The speed is excellent too.

Will be making an order from MB Klein in the next fortnight for my christmas gift. My mother has agreed to stump up for a bit of it as my gift from my parents. I plan on getting around 100 trees. I'm planning on getting a couple of tree kits too to make my own. I can't remember what I've added to the cart, and the website seems to be down right now so I can't check!

Another day of cricket tomorrow, we are in a very good position, for once!

Thoughts with all that need them!

Cheers,

Whistling

Just stopped by to check up on you all.\

So sorry and sad to hear of Yougottawanta's wife. As with all our buddies here and their wives that stand in need, you will indeed be in our prayers.

Spent some time the last couple of nights using clear silicon to make the river between the falls and the one falls itself.   Also cast some rock out cropings and got some latex paint on them. will have to wash them with some diluted India Ink tomorrow. Then get it all together under the deck girder bridge coming out of the west end of the Honeymoon Tunnels.   This sounds easier than what it will be, I know..   They never said it would be easy, they only said it would be worth it..   I have to believe, doncha think ??

Off to bed now as it has been a long day since 6:05 this morning.  It snowed most of the day and we are to get more overnight, so that means I'll be  back on the "chain snow gang" in the morning.  I need rest.

CN Charlie and Seamonster, you guys had better get those snow shovels polished up. You're going to need them.

Night all and God Bless.       Morning Tipton Bill.    and Galaxy, you are probably up wandering around and checking the fridge for goodies.

Tom W of CA ....

Here is the site about model railroad photography. I was a horrible photographer before reading this information. Bob Boudreau posts in MR forum occassionally.

http://sites.google.com/site/railphotog/

I now use a tripod, turn off the flash, let the camera do automatic focussing, and use the 10 second timer. There's much more to be learned in this site.

Lion .... I used to model the 1900 era and had some Palace cars for it. You were creative with yours. Jeff, here in the diner, is very creative with his models, too.

Barry .... I am not surpresed.

I have a question for everyone:

When you take photos of your layouts or equipment, do you use your flash attachment?  Reason that I ask, is that I'm trying to make some kind of sense out of the book that came with my Canon 7.2, and so far it looks as if the zoom will only stay in focus if the flash is on.

This is a closer shot I was able to get of the two #1711's on the bridge, using the zoom and the flash, but it seems awfully harsh (maybe I've got too much light on in the garage?).  I tried to Photoshop the contrast down a little, but it still seems to 'come right at you'.

Maybe I just have to do some experimenting--I've not been using the flash attachment before, but as I said, any close-ups I've been able to get in focus have been by 'cropping', not using the Zoom attachment.  Of course, the book that came with the camera is written in Martian, and could probably only be deciphered by the writers of THE BIG BANG THEORY (or my favorite Nerd student Chad).

So I'll keep the flash and do some experimenting that way.  Unless anyone can come up with a better solution.  Photography is NOT one of my strong suits, especially with this Camera From Another World, LOL!

That blue palace car is great. I made some palace cars for my former railroad. The story that went with them is that because of high demand on my commuter road, they were refurbished as commuter cars, equipped with a cab car that also housed a generator for HEP and MUd to a handy freight locomotive.

YGW ... I'm very sad to hear your news. It's good you could stop in and share your situation we will be praying for your wife, you, and your family.. Please keep us informed.

Rob .... It's good to hear you have neighborswho want to share Thanksgiving with you. I hope you will consider going ahead and accepting the invitation because it may turn out to be a comfort to you at this time. I don't think you should be by yourself on a holiday if possible. Also, I'm glad you are working on the model railroad, too. As I say, model trains are good for sanity breaks.

Lion .... Thanks for taking time to explain all of that. I bet you have many interesting experiences. It's good you can use a classroom for the layout. That should be ample square feet.

Galaxy .... I certainly hope Mrs. Galaxy has great results from the interview. Kepp us informed.

Barry .... Is your photo a picture of the machine required to lift you Barry-sized hamburgers?

Ken ... Sounds like things are good these days "on the job front".

Ulrich .... You, too. I'm glad to hear about your jobs. Being an old number cruncher, I appreciate that kind of work.

Tom in Cal..... Your "twins" look terrific on the big bridge! ... When I was trying to learn to take pictures I went to a website that was posted in the MR forum. I have the website saved on another computer, but could get it to you if you like. I hope your health is okay now.

The Chapel Car has been dispatched for those who wish to pray for YGW's wife, Rob's grieving his loss of his wife, Galaxy's health and his wife's job, Wolfgang's cancer (see Ulrich's post), and several other situations.

 Evening Folks,

Flo, Beer and a wheel chair pleases.

I Forgot Stupid People Own Cars! And I think ever one of them either called today or came to the store today! Wont go into great detail like the woman that called and said her oil lite kept flickering, I told her to check the oil level and add oil if needed. Well she saw no oil on the dip stick, so she poured antifreeze in the motor. OK, some one had stored old antifreeze in a oil can and she did not start the motor and had it hauled in. But, seemed like every person was like that today!

Bright side, the day flew by, or should I say a blur? Heck between the phone ringing and customers I never did take a lunch break. Did find to eat here and there but no break.

Banker hours are over. Next 3 days will be 10 hour days and I will be working 46 hours this week. Well, that is still a short week compared to the 50 to 55+ hour I should be working!

Time Off Acquired Little shocked by these numbers! Would you believe in the first 2 weeks I worked I now have 8 paid hours of personal time off and 4 hours of vacation time? If what I was told is correct (I have no reason to believe it is Whistling) It would mean I would get 2 weeks of vacation and 208 paid hours of personal time off? Guess they give you all that time off so you can get your knees and hip replaced! Whistling

Sue Thank you for the idea. Now all I have to do is find time to do it! Might try one of the local news stations as well.

Todd I have heard that for years. When I worked for Midas the policy was if the fluid was burnt don't touch it. At NTB, if the car has around 100,000 miles and the owner does not know if it has been changed, don't changed the fluid.

Ulrich Glad to hear things still look positive for the company! Any chances of getting something besides stock soon? Have not ran a train in 2 months? Shame, Shame, Shame! Whistling Guess Santa has no need to bring you any coal! Laugh

The docs will not operate again. We have had a rough time with this latest news. Very disheartening.Have to get the kiddos to bed talk to you all later.
