Good morning. It's 81° and sunny. The high will be 100° but will feel like 113°. There's a 40% chance of rain.

More layout work today if I can get the time to do it. So many little things seem to get in the way.

Rob,  Sorry to hear about Yeti. It is always painful to lose a friend like that.

I don't feel so badly about not having so much train time when I hear you retired guys griping about the interuptions you have to deal with.

Hope this week sees those in Sick Bay doing better and no new issues.

Good Afternoon!

By this time, the floor should not be that slippery anymore - I hope.

Flo, just a coffee, please!

Rob - I am sorry to hear about Yeti. I know how much it hurts to lose a pet, that´s why Petra and I have decided not to have one anymore after we lost Carrot (our beagle girl) 14 years ago,

Ray - nice picture Thumbs Up

Well, I have been experimenting with white glue for the waterfall. Although with some practice I may be able to achieve something looking realistic, I don´t think I will go down that road. The stuff dries rock hard and becomes brittle after a little while, so I need to look into something different. I still have some clear latex caulk somewhere, so I will give this a try. If that also fails, there is still WS Water Effects!

This is what the white glue looks like - it is only loosely placed there!

The bottom part would require some alterations.

Mornin'!

Zoe, I'll have one of the big, butter rum muffins and a cup of dark roast coffee (just to see if they still make it right up here....).

Ulrich, I think you will do much better using clear caulk or the Water Effects (basically the same thing).

Rob, very sorry to hear about Yeti!  Keep you in my prayers.....  Hard to lose a beloved pet. Sigh

Mornin' Bill!

Later!

Morning everyone from SunnyCal.  Supposed to be in the mid-90's today, with thunderstorms over the eastern Sierra from Lake Tahoe south into Mono County.  It's that monsoon time in the Southwest again, and it always sneaks up through Nevada along the eastern front.  It's usually Gully-Washer time, which means flash flooding.

So we're in Canada, eh?  Never been to the eastern part of Canada, though I've visited B.C. and Victoria several times.  Great country, great scenery and GREAT people!!  So I'll have one of those wonderful Cornish Pasties like they make in Victoria, Flo.  The ones with LOTS of meat and potatoes and onions and parsely.  And that nice flaky crust..  Yummy!  Stick out tongue

Well, son and grandson have departed the premises--grandson is flying back to Illinois today.  And he's PROMISED us that he's going to talk to his mommy about finishing his high school up in Vancouver.  I hope she agrees--the high school he's presently attending has a real dearth of AP courses, and he's going to need all he can get if he wants to get into a decent college in the future.  And Washington state ranks about 11 in high-school systems (where he's attending ranks about 41).  I DEFINITELY wouldn't have him attend high school here in California (we rank at the very bottom), unless it was a private school, and even with my discount at Jesuit, it would still probably run Christopher about $8000 a year.  Worth every penny, of course, Jesuit ranks right up there with the best high schools in the country, but it would be an outlay that neither Tom or myself can really afford right now.  We'll see what happens.   Christopher was pretty funny while we were discussing Jesuit.  He kept staring at me and saying, "Granpa, do I have to go to Mass every day if I go there?  I wasn't raised Catholic, remember?"  "30% of our students are non-Catholic, so don't worry about it."  "Oh."  "We have school Liturgies once a month.  You'd have to wear a tie."  "Yuck!"

Ah, Youth!  Laugh

It was wonderful having him out.  Even if he did spend a lot of time under the layout muttering to himself and asking Grandpa what the Heck he was thinking of when he originally wired the thing, LOL!  Now I've got nifty bus-wiring and feeders about every 3 feet or so and those lokies of mine are just CRAWLING around the place.  Ah, youth!!    I told him to watch out for Black Widow's while he was under there armed with bug-zapper.  He grinned and said, "I'm not worried about those, Granpa, it's the big Furry ones that I wonder about."  HUH??   "Just kidding."

We did get up to the mountains--he scurried around the Sierra Buttes happily chipping away at the basalt up there while Granpa sat on a rock with his inhaler.  Dang, I've sure gotten sensitive to ALTITUDE in my Old Age.  Surprise   But it was beautiful up there.  Took some photos that I hopefully will be able to Photoshop and blend into my backdrop.  We'll see.

So it's definitely a little quieter (and lonelier) with them gone.  Just me and the cats and the trains.  Start back to school in about 2 weeks--the usual Prep stuff before the guys start invading the campus.  Looking forward to it.

Rob:  So sorry to hear about Yeti--pets are Family, no matter how you look at it.  She sounds as if she was one Very Great dog.

Ulrich:  I like the waterfall.  That module's really coming along.

Ken:  I used to work retail at a music store, so I know what you're going through.  How come the minute some people walk into a store they turn into Attila the Hun?   I remember one woman in particular, brought back some music and demanded a cash refund.  I pointed to the EXCHANGES ONLY, NO CASH REFUNDS signs we had posted all over the place.  She sniffed, "I never read signs."  That did it.  I looked at her and said, "I'll just bet you're a lot of fun at a four-way stop-sign aren't you?"  She left, I got into trouble with the management, but looking back on it, it was WORTH it, LOL!

Well, time to go out to the garage and see if that little POV mini-cam I bought works.  I taped it into the bed of a gondola to get a train's-eye view of the layout.  If it does, and I can get it downloaded, I'll post the tour of the Yuba River Sub, warts and all, LOL!

Have a great day.  Prayers to those in need.

Burried Yeti today, one of our last Great Pyrenees dogs. She worked the night shift with Unaka (our remaining big male G.P.)  right up to the end. She did a great job and will be missed. RIP, old girl.

Almost forgot today is bill paying day. Already paid most of them online but there are a few that must be paid on site with check in hand. Seems no matter where you go there are some places that still operate by prehistoric rules. One of the online bill payments I made was my annual phone bill. A whopping $19.95.That's for a whole year, not a month!

Afternoon all.

Spent the earlier part of the day running around doing stuff. Ran to A&P to get some stuff, and to Bank of Stupid to make a deposit. Bank of Stupid's ATM in the Seaside location was down, so I actually had to go inside Bank of Stupid. Didn't even know THAT one could do THAT! THAT's so twentieth century... Smile, Wink & Grin
And of course, by the time I walked out, Bank of Stupid had the ATM up and running again... Bang Head

And on the way home, I stopped at Wawa to get an ICED COFFEE. The machine was broken, so no ICED COFFEE for me. Crying

W**k at five, same thing as every other day, just an hour later today.

Rob, sorry to hear about Yeti Angel

SFB, I feel your pain. I'm down the shore all summer, which means no layout. I got all this nice stuff for it, but it will be two more weeks before I even go up north to see it again...

Ulrich, the top of the waterfall looks good, but (IMHO) the bottom needs a little work. But I think you should try the caulk and Water Effects before you say "good enough."

Tom, I know what he means about the ties. Not only do we have to wear them for liturgy, but we have to wear them every day between October and May! Yuck!

Wow, some of you guys are having a rough time staying on your feet! Sheesh!

Well, it's getting closer and closer to THAT time...

Catch ya later,

-Joe

Well, I have $26 to my name until Wednesday when my food stamp debit card is reloaded ($50), then it'll be back to Wal-Mart for some more grocery shopping. Today I picked up some sandwich stuff, a jar of sliced olives, bag of tortilla strips, can of pepper and three 5 oz (largest I can find here) bottles of Tabasco sauce. Original, jalapeno, and Buffalo Style. Haven't tried that one yet. I also found a Proto 2000 B&O F7B shell in my mailbox today. Looks like it should fit on an Athearn chassis without much of a problem. It'll be a good replacement for the blue box body that's on it now. Half the stirrups on the Athearn shell are broken off and the only replacement I had on hand until now was an old Athearn F3? B unit dummy shell from the 60's or early 70's that screams TOY. On the up side it only has one stirrup broken off. Now if I could get a Proto 2000 F7A shell. There's nothing wrong with the shell I have other than it's an Athearn blue box shell and doesn't match the detail of the new P2K shell.

Evenin'

Janie, just a cup of decaf and a piece of THAT apple pie with some vanilla ice cream on top.  thanks!

Been a weird sort of day.  Late morning I tried to call "Ma"  aka: Mable.  She was a Home and Careers teacher in the Middle School and the one charged with keeping us all in line back when I was teaching...  No one knows how she got to be the keeper of our being good all the time, but she was.  Anyway "Ma" is still amongst my best friends.  She retire a few years ahead of me and now does her best to keep the gang in touch and knowing what is going on in all our lives.  "Ma" called last Friday with the latest news.  A gentleman who was the High School Instrumental Teacher and head of the Music Dept. when I was hired dies last Thursday at Strong Hospital in Rochester.  I was supposed to call her back and just didn't get to it, so this morning I gave her a call.  She wasn't there so I chatted for a half hour or so with her husband who is a retired Social Studies teacher and major character.....  He told me they were planning on going to calling hours this afternoon (2-4) for the teacher if she got back home in time.  If not they would be at the evening hours.  I hung around my house until about 2:45 waiting to hear from them.

I was on my way out the door when the phone rang.  My son!  They had a bit of emergency and needed me to watch the girls from about 3:30 to whenever his wife got home from a funeral in Syracuse.  I told him I would head to  the funeral home and then head over to his house.  I was able to get in, pay my respects, say hi to a few folks and get out to my son' house by 3:40.  My DIL didn't show up until about 5:3 and then she and the girls had to take off to pick up the car they just bought... An hour's drive one way.  So my day has been pretty much shot.

The funeral my DIL was at was for one of her students at the school where she teaches.  It is a school for disturbed youth and young people who need constant supervision.  The boy who died last Friday was born addicted to drugs and had severe allergies and a panic disorder.  He had just returned to the school after being taken to the doctors office.  The doctor examined him and thought he was having another panic attack problem so had treated him for that.  He seemed to be much better, but soon after he got back to the school he went into a severe asthma attack and died........  My DIL is more than a little shook up about it.  He was one of her favorite kids there and all of 20 years old...

My DIL rode with a friend of hers from the Faculty.  The driver was taking all the back road shortcuts to the funeral home to save some time and ran out of gas about half way there....  Seems the gas gauge was stuck.  Another car fromk the school was following them so after trying to get someone to come and start the car without success, they left it on the side of the road.  The 7 of them packed into a 5 seat car and continued on.  They got there just after the casket had been closed, so they decided to stay for the burial service at the graveside.  Of course THAT put them about 2 1/2 hours late coming back home.  they took the same route and arrived at the car they left to find the sheriff and a tow truck in the process of removing the abandoned car!  They had a can of gas in the back of the car they were in and managed to explain why the car was there and were allowed to put the gas in the car.  Somehow the car started and ran (must not have cleared out the injectors completely) and so made it home.......

As I said interesting day around here.......Whistling

So......., I haven't gotten much done around here today.  I did find a photo I took last Winter to share:

I'll catch up with all of you later!

Evening All,

Nothing much happening here. Went to the LHS. It was the kind of hobby shop where everything is crammed everywhere. I loved it. For some reason one of the owners stated trying to convince me that I needed to buy a iPad (no, they did not sell them). I did not have the heart to tell her not a chance in hades. Anyway I bought a box of the Rapido totally wired poles, some brass tubing, a sheet of thick white styrene and some 1/16 inch white tape for road lines and parking spots.

I am going to elevate my dwarf signals on a pole as I have seen in pictures. I think they will have more impact this way and not get lost in the clutter track side.

Rob- Sorry to hear about Yeti.

Jeff- is that a F7B B&O shell?

Everyone have a good night.

Long day. Chamomile tea, please.

Wow, my wife has already replaced Yeti. She has named this 3 month old Great Pyrenees pup, "Selu", which in Cherokee means: Corn Gatherer. Selu will spend her first night safe in a bathroom. Tomorrow she will be introduced to Unaka (big old male) and meet a few of the smaller critters here on the ol' farm. Selu told me she is a fan of Union Pacific Railroad, as you can see by the pic.Whistling

Have a good night all.

Cheers! Cowboy Rob

Rob:  Sorry to hear about your dog, Yeti.  It's always traumatic to lose a loved pet.  We've lost two cats over the years.  They both lived to the ripe old age of 13 or 14.  The first one died in my arms and that was especially traumatic.  Our current cat is 15 and the vet says he should have another 2 or 3 good years left.  He's getting a little stiff but can still run through the house like his tail was on fire when the mood strikes him.  Still, at that age we have to be prepared.  My wife doesn't think we should get another cat when he dies because he/she would probably outlive us, and if we have to move into assisted living (a good possibility) we probably couldn't take him/her with us.  Still, after having cats in the house for about 43 years, the house would seem empty without one.

Enough sad thoughts.  It's a holiday here today so we spent most of the day at the beach in our favourite provincial park.  It's only an hour's drive away.  Had burgers, fries and onion rings from the concession stand for lunch and ice cream in the afternoon.  Spent much of the time sitting in the shade at the beach watching the people, especially the children, having fun in the water.  It was hot (86F) and almost no breeze and so humid you could cut chunks out of the air with a knife.  It was hot even sitting in the shade.  The only way to cool off was to get in the water, but we don't do that any more.  Oh well, we had a good time but we're beat so it's early to bed for us tonight.  Good night all.

 Evening Fellow Dinners

Flo, Pink Lemonade, and a Big Boy Sub please.

Work Front While not a great day, still pretty good at $1700.00 or so. If my weekends would just pick back up I might make some money this month. Sold yet another Spiff Mattress for a extra $8.00. Sad news, we are down to 3 of them now. So the extra money is coming to a end.

Rob Sorry to read about Yeti. I still will get misty eyed when I talk about Sonya our first Irish Wolfhound and she been gone 8 years now. With Tiffy being 16 and a half years old now, I know it could be any day now. But she still is happy, gets around pretty good and still loves to eat! Dinner I think that what keeps her going, dinner time!

Ulrich Using clear silicone will work better I bet. That was the link I posted for you.

 I see you all later.

86 is hot? Here that's a nice day. You might melt here.Cool Today was 102 (114 with the heat index)Dead. That was definitely on the warm side. I felt like I was driving a microwave oven earlier today when I was out paying some bills. All I could do was roll down the front windows and open the rear side windows to get a breeze going through. That and drink lots of water which I carry in abudance anyway hot or cold, it makes no difference to me.

Evening Gang: It is now 31 days of 100+. It got up to 109F according to the thermometer in the truck. Actually I got along pretty good. I was working in the machinery shed cleaning up. The shed is completly open on the north side and partly in the shade. There were also a couple of clouds so that helped some. I wasn't able to finish all the cleaning but did get a good start. I was taking brakes often when I felt alittle hot. I'm sure that you guys are getting tired of hearing me talk about the heat, but that is about all there is here to talk about. Well there is the drought. OK, enough already.

It's late so I'll sign off.

Good Night All

Good evening all.  Just stopping in for the night.  Figured that I would give IE one last shot at working on here and actually letting  me post properly.  Not much happening, been doing some reading and researching, as normal.  Thinking about putting together some track in the living room on the floor nd running trains that way, but who knows, I may not fool with it at all.  Glad that I could come in and see and be seen.  I have been thinking of y'all whenever I can.

Nothing for me tonight, I closed at w**k this evening, so I'm not going to have anything.

Hello All, yall starting to look a little less bruised. I now have my PASPORT and some thorns in my backside from getting thrown off the train yesterday when we passed close to the US of A border. Ouch.

Rob - pup ? That puppy is the size of my lab when she was one! Hope you got a BIG farm because you'll need to raise a huge crop to keep THAT "puppy" in feed.Dinner ESPECIALLY WHEN HE GROWS UPSurprise

Jeff - I feel your pain where I now w**k we are paid every two weeks. When I get paid all of the "extra cash" goes towards saw bone bills for MOH. Makes for a long two weeks.

Ulrich - amazing Yes I just cannot get over how much progress you are making. How is the training going ?

Seamonster - how come you dont go in the water ? I know why we dont. We usually go to the outer banks NC. This summer there were several people who were attacked by sharks. I dont do sharks! Is that why you dont go in?

At the end of the w**k day I scanned craiglist for HO stuff. Ran across an add that had a bunch of loose stuff listed as "lionel" knew that to be wrong but contacted the person just to see if what they had was worth the effort. Make a long story short it turned out to be Bachmen, most of it broken, but with two decent engines with horn hook couplers, I counter offered their $60 with $20 , of course they turned me down. Just not that interested in the Bachmann diesals. Hope they find someone who is. When I reteurned home I called my Aunt and she informed me my uncle had fallen off of a building he was working on (14' drop) and landed on concrete. He had to be flown out from there to the hospital. Two broken ribs, right arm shattered, fractured jaw, teeth knocked out.... He is out of intensive care and is waiting on surgery for his arm. On strong pain meds for know.To add to the trauma his two daughters saw him fall. They of course are shook up pretty bad. Keep them in your Angel please.

Lunchtime!

Petra is off to her dentist´s appointment, so she won´t be watching what I am having!

Flo, make that a double burger plate, with fries, and a RBF to wash it down, please.

It´s a sunny day today - a rare occasion this season! Everyone´s out in the yard, but me! I am glad I don´t have to do any gardening anymore Smile, Wink & Grin

I´ll take a break of w*rking on the module today. The caulk I still have is no god any longer, so I´ll have to buy some new stuff within the next days. I´´ll make use of the extra time to collect ideas for the next module. A straight module does not leave much room for a temple, so that will have to go on the curve module. The temple is a must! I am also collecting ideas on how to scenic the station modules to the left. These things have to evolve before my eyes before I start building.

YGW - that´s one of the nice things about building those mini-modules. Progress is visible very quickly and I find that very rewarding. The training will start the week after next, that will put an arupt end to my modeling activities Sigh

Angel for your uncle!

Rob - congrats on the new puppy! She (or he?) is a sweet one!

Well, I´ll be out for a moment - CUL & have a good one!

Lunchtime? Ulrich it's only 8am dude!   67F this morning a nice break after all the heat and humidity though the thunderstorms, downpours and hail were interesting.

Jeff - THAT is a very illustrative pic you took of the P2K B and Athearn BB A units. How things have changed in just a few years. I know what you mean about the detail on the shells as we have probably 2 dozen AHM, Tyco and Lifelike  lokies in pieces that just aren't useful. Mostly the sidewinder or pancake motors and even when I'd fix them, they wouldn't run for long. For the w..king displays we favor the old Athearn and Proto 1000 units as they run forever. Most of the rolling stock is BB as well with kaydeess and upgraded trucks/wheels.

No layout time last night. I was in the shop tussling with a gearbox til late and just ended up going home, eating and then to bed. Long day today but will end up at the museum tonight so that's good.

Ulrich - If you do some research, you'll see there are many types and sizes of temples and shrines in Japan from concrete to classic stick and ricepaper. Once you get a design for the module you should be able to find an appropriately sized structure to go with it - perhaps overlooking the rocky coast on a steep hillside going down to waters edge? Just a thought. On Okinawa even in the 70's there were people using the hand powered little one man fishing boats so you could try and strech and include that as well.

Ray - It's tragic when all the effort trying to help a troubled kid comes to naught and even worse when it's some twist of fate that gets them. My prayers for both his family and the family of your departed collegue.

   Catch y'all later,   J.R.
