Jeff: ---  And curious about the Varney boxcar you mentioned--plastic or metal?   I've got a few Varney metal reefers that I still run--those puppies are indestructable!  And they still look good in a consist.

This one is plastic.

Good morning from SunnyCal:  It hit 98 again yesterday (was forecast for high 80's), and looks like it might actually turn into AUGUST here for a while.  Which means temps hovering between high 90's and low 100's.   Cuts the work on the MR down in the garage--mornings and evenings.  I just turn the fan on during the afternoon and pray, LOL!   Actually, we've had a below normal summer here as far as temps, maybe a hang-over from our VERY wet winter.  And yes, we've still got SNOW on some of the higher peaks in the Sierra.  Surprise

Well, I got the rails painted in the engine terminal yesterday.  VERY CAREFULLY masked off the points and moveable parts of the Peco turnouts, then let fly with the Rustoleum base coat.  Then left the garage with the fan on for an hour or two to get rid of the spray-paint smell.  Came back, cleaned off the rails and---you guessed it--the yard was DEAD!  Some paint must have gotten into the points or joints of the lead yard turnout, so now I get to find out WHAT and get it cleaned off.  I've got computer contact cleaner which should work, but I'm really kind of puzzled--I've never had this happen before.  As I said before, these Pecos are REALLY 'sensitive'.  And I do NOT want to spend the bucks to replace them with Walters/Sinohara Code 83's, they're just too flimsy IMO (though the Sinohara Code 100's I"ve got on the main are just dandy, even after 10 years--go figure! Stick out tongue).

So, that's today's project.  Whew!   Hoped I'd be ballasting and landscaping by now.

Jeff:  Are those billboard reefers wood kits?  The Blatz looks a little like an old Silver Streak reefer I've got--those kits were a ton of fun to build.   You've really made quite a haul, there.  And curious about the Varney boxcar you mentioned--plastic or metal?   I've got a few Varney metal reefers that I still run--those puppies are indestructable!  And they still look good in a consist.

Stan:  Like that Pennsy painting a lot--and that CPR 'in progress' looks as if it's going to be spectacular!  I still mean it about the Yellowstone, BTW.

Rob:  I'm still praying for your Great Pyrenees--it's very possible that a lot of his condition is mourning for his lost partner.  It's amazing how animals react to the death of one of their own.  Happens with cats, too--when I lost Lowell a few years ago, my other Maine Coon--Spooky--actually went into a Major Depression.  She really didn't come out of it until I acquired that weird Norwegian Forest Cat--Uff-Dah--.  She's been fine ever since, now that she has someone else to 'tolerate' (and occasionally whack).

This coming Monday is our Faculty Retreat, so back to the grind is getting closer and closer.  The school just posted a new and improved Website--it's really neat.   Bob, our Tech Guy e-mailed me about it, apologized because my Faculty photo wasn't on it.  He wants me to take a new one so he can download it when I get back.  I told him that with my new beard I look like a deranged Santa Claus, anyway.  Hopefully I won't have to shave it off when I go back to teaching--without it, my face looks like Gravity gone Berserk, LOL!   But Jesuit is pretty lax about facial hair on the Faculty.  At least the men, LOL!

Well, time to go out and investigate the Errant Turnout, see what's going on with it.  Who knows, maybe it cured itself overnight--YAH, SURE!!  Wink

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Mornin'

Zoe I'll have a butter rum muffin and a cup (or two or three) of dark raost coffee in a R&GV RR Mug, please and thank you!

I have a bunch of errands to accomplish this morning and then get to take "the Boys" to their Vet Appt. this afternoon.....  THAT is always a fun task!Whistling  I take them over one at a time (can't put 40lbs. + of cats in the carrier at the same time) and when I bring whichever went first home, #2 has gone into hiding and it will take some time to find, catch, and stuff him into the carrier and get back over to the Vets.  Lucky I live about one block away from the office.

Good Morning everyone!

I've been M.I.A. this past week, but I finally got caught up on some painting, and somehow, the computer allowed me a chance to drop a line.

Here's a look at the CP painting as it is now:

And a look at a Pennsy painting that I made a few adjustments on:

We've been working on the layout as well and I caught this pic of PRR 4471 up on the fill passing an mty hopper train westbound:

I hope to finish the CPR painting this afternoon.

Just a coffee for me today, I need the caffiene fix!

Have a good day!

Good morning. It's 80° and sunny. The high will be 101° (feel like 108°). There's a 30% chance of thunderstorms this afternoon.

I'll probably be working on an Athearn Railbox, a Varney 40' Pennsylvania boxcar and a Mantua C&O 40' gondola. They already have knuckle couplers. The problem is the cars look so nice, new and shiny. If they're going to be on my layout they're going to get dirty quick.

I have about half a dozen packages here waiting to be taken to the Post Office . That'll be just as soon as I have the money to pay the postage on them. They're stacked up next to the fridge and I have to step around them to get to the one and only chair in this place.

Morning

ham, fried eggs, hashbrowns and coffee if you would be so kind, thank you

I have school starting today at 1. So I may pop in for a grab lunch. I painted my grandpa's trailer yesterday and am going to take it back to him Saturday.

MRR- Looks good considering I only managed to sneak away a few times during the day over summer break when I had nothing to do. I dunno but one area near the station looks too well kept to me, its supposed to look like a park. So maybe I'll order some trees.

I'l be at the RC for a bit.

When in doubt. grab a hammer.

If it can't be fixed with a hammer... DUCK TAPE!

Morning All,

At w**k today. Had a late call last night for a 8 yo with drama. Going to be hot again today, I think they are predicting around 96 F with the heat index in the triple digits. It rained for about 10 minutes this morning which is guaranteed to raise the humidity today.

Lee- No issues. I messed up and ordered a  L/H signal (don't ask me why), my others are R/H. I guess I should of used this one on the back side of the layout but did not think of it until it was completely hooked up. Oh well I will just have to live with it the way it is. I was wondering if someone was going to catch the error.

Everyone take care

Good morning, Chloe.  Coffee, please.

Garry,  I think that you enjoy the photo part as much as the modeling. My experience is that it takes a lot of photos to find the one to share.

Lee,  Funny that you should mention backdrops.  We added a 2' x 12' staging about a year ago.  We had the 130' walthers TT on back order for  the past year, and recently decided to scrap the idea of having it at the end to turn the locos.  So Sunday I hauled out the backdrop buildings to study them.  Can't wait to see what you do with yours.  We have a software to design background buildings that we mix in to give it more depth.

Since we started doing more operations, we have both been working on businesses.  If life ever slows down, I will try to take more photos.

Time to get ready for work.

Sue

Good morning.

We could add up the posts for all the diners, and we still would not have as many as Jeff has.

Rob ... Sounds like you are busy. It's terrible when there is not enough time for MRR'ing.

We still have the Cincinnati grand daughters. Yesterday, the plastic Mickey Mouse fishing reel broke, and part of it dropped into the lake. No more big fish for that little fishing pole. Today the girls go home. That means we take them half way to CIncinnati to meet their "Mom and Dad". (Our DIL and Son). We'll find a location such as Louisville or Elizabethtown. So, it's another non-MRR day.

Cheers, everybody.

Good Morning All,

Sue it’s nice to see you in the diner again, how is your layout progressing?

Jeff, that green war relief caboose is pretty cool. The railroads converted boxcars into cabooses to make up for the shortage during the war.  NYC would cut into the boxcar to give it end platforms but leaving a window in the ends.  If I find a picture I’ll send it to you.  Timkin (just south of Cleveland) makes the bearings for the railroad axels.

Curt, great work on the dwarfs, the look very cool.  DON’T take this the wrong way, but they need to be to the right of the track if they are block control signals.  Government required all track signals (outside of yard limits) to be to the right or centered over the track they controlled until 1984ish.  The same year they changed the cross buck arms from black and white stripes to red and white stripes.

Last night I re-sized some backdrops I ordered online and I’m ready to glue them to the sky board for my downtown area.

Good morning all....Coffee Flo. I had to explain to a co-worker the differance between a toy train and a model train yesterday.I was in my office with my laptop on my desk doing some paperwork. A employee comes in to ask a question and sees the screensaver ,you like toy trains? What ? do you like toy trains. I don,t have any toy trains I model trains. Whats the differeance he chuckles. I reached into my desk pulled out an issue of MRR and said take a look.He studied tha magazine awhile and said these look real! I said yeah exacly.

Chamomile tea, please.

Unaka, our old male Great Pyrenees is still with us, for now. Wife has him on specific drugs for inflamation and pain. Locking him in a horse stall full of shavings tomorrow. I didn't expect him to be in this condition so soon after losing his mate Yeti, as she was older. This is my wife's call, so time will tell.

Keep looking at the Boley flatbed truck sitting on the kitchen counter in need of some black paint. Still seem to be overwhelmed with farm related stuff these days. Eventually I'll get around to working on our railroads.

Have a good night y'all.

 Evening Folks!

Flo, Prime Rib, medium rare, fried mushrooms, twice baked potato, with bacon, cheese and sour cream, fried cabbage, chief salad and a Beer please. Dinner

Well really nothing to say to night, might hook up with Simon 1966 in the next few days. Like to finally know if my meter is causing the odd power readings or if all my new motors are junk!

Work Front was OK today but nothing special. Made a few extra bucks on selling a spiff bed. All so work on a new song today. Boy this will date me, playing Yellow Submarine  on the guitar. I remember the movie coming out?

Well, time to watch NCIS! Smile, Wink & Grin

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a decaf for me right now.

Been a busy day.  One THAT unfortunately once again didn't involve any model railroading.  The roofs came and installed a metal roof on the shed this morning.  I had to be back at the eye docs. by 11AM to get the new glasses and finish the last test he needed to give me.  Good news was for the test today there was no change from last year...  This was one to check to see if there was any damage due to the diabetes.  I have to go back tomorrow to have the glasses adjusted...  They keep falling down my nose and I can't see with them.  Got the w*rk station almost done and most everything hooked back up and running.

Tomorrow I get to take the "boys" (Manét and Blackie) to the vet for their annual check up and booster shot.  Doesn't THAT sound like fun......  Doubt I will get down to the trains tomorrow either.  I will be spending Thursday evening and all weekend out at the R&GV RR Museum so I will be playing with trains soon!!!

Jeffrey, isn't it fun to get a new box or two of toys now and then....  You seem to be having a lot of fun!

Have a great evening!

Evening guys, just stopping in for a RBF for the night.  Guess what I didn't do today!  I didn't get to work on the SD40-2 OR anything else as I discovered that I was out of paint thinner....kinda makes making washes hard with no thinner, so when I'm at w**k tomorrow I'll pick some up and go from there.  I did get to do a little railfanning as CSX Q650 made its run by my daughter's dance school on its way up to Montgomery.  Always fun to watch as the kids run up to the window and door and point and stare as the "choo choo" goes by.  Of course I'm right there with them ID'ing locomotives and rolling stock, so for me its research, AND fun!

Welp, I guess I'd better mosey on and get to the shower and bed, I have a long day ahead of me tomorrow, up at 4am to be at w**k by 0600 so that I can be there to receive and then of course, put up, truck.  Maybe tomorrow afternoon I can do some weathering as I'll have my required paint thinner.

"At w**k tonight. Had a guy earlier that called us for a free transport to the ER because he did not want to impose on his fatherAngry Sometimes I wonder why I do this."

I hear ya Pal...loud and clear on THAT one. W**king in the ER (and ambo) in Creston, IA, we'd get ER walk-ins with such life-threatening emergencies as "a tooth ache going on three months." So sir, why did you decide to come into the ER now, at three in the morning? "Cause I can't sleep." OK...  I'll go wake up the Doc, and he'll give you a hand full of 800mg Tylenol and send you on your way...Oh, and we'll also give you a free magnet with the hours, location, etc. to the County free clinic... What's that sir? They're only open during the day? That's right sir... but you sleep during the day? Oh...you must work nights then. No? You just party all night long.... alllllllllllllllllllrightee then.Bang Head

Hey CURT, ever had the Pt. meet you at the curb? Luggage (several suitcases) packed and ready to go? I had a "suicidal subject" do THAT...if you want to call eight Tylenol a "suicide attempt." Not eight bottles...eight tablets. Bang Head My hat is off to you, for still doing it.

Speaking of EMS CURT, I see Iowa is jumping into some national (???) push to re-define EMS certification levels, and in the process, cutting some interventions the First Responders and EMT-Basics were able to use, such as the Combi-Tube. The new "Emergency Medical Responder" and "EMT" apparently will NOT be able to use any airway other than the oral pharyngeal... Whisky Tango Foxtrot?  If'n I were still an "Iowa Paramedic Specialist," I would have to either "transition" to the new "Paramedic" or drop down to an "Advanced EMT." As it is now, the PS follows the 1998 National Standard Curriculum for EMT-P while the "Iowa Paramedic" follows the 1999 NSC for EMT-Intermediate.

I might be able to make an article out of this mess for THAT Editor as Solon, Swisher, Ely, Tiffin, Oxford and North Liberty all rely on volunteers (Fire Dept. EMTs) before J a C k A S s (Johnson County Ambulance Service) arrives. Those vollies (and the JCAS paid guys/gals) will have to undergo hours of "transitional programing." I suspect some will say "enough!" and hang up their stethoscopes, especially if they are "losing skills" they once had extreme competency in.Bang Head

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Evening, bottle of Coke please 'n thank-you.

Since writer's block has clamped down upon my brain, rendering it useless to write about two 20-something "kids" and their coach who LOVE fencing (on-guard! perry, dodge, thrust!). It's a neat story...I'm just not sure how to tell it! So................(not a needle pulling thread) I've been playing with choo choo stuff instead, finally getting Dullcote applied to stuff THAT has been piling up on the w**k table. They will all soon enough be, as JEFF said, "collecting dust on my shelves."

Best wishes to all in need, be they man or dog...

Chris
