Hum Double Knot 7. Well I been thinking about trying my hand at painting anyway. Big Smile

Thank you for the pictures Jeffery.

Far as the PA's, I was going to try some from a RTR SD-50, I have a few sets for them. We will see what happens.

 Well time to Dinner

    See you all Sunday.

Jeffery I am get some what excited about the trade. I have not had a new engine for 2 years now. Could you post the picture of the 2-10-2 steamer again please?

Is this the same or close to the same engine?

If not, it is not a problem.

On the PA's, would the wheels from a newer RTR Athearn work? I know I need to use the same center gears, just hopping the Nickel Wheels Axles would fit there center gears and side frames.

By the way Jeff, you miss understood when I said my PK 1000 Erie Built are about the same sizes as the PA's. I hoping I can mount the PA shells of the Erie chassis. They are strong pullers, close to what a E-6 can pull. Not changing the trucks out. I all so have the same Delaware & Hudson PA #19 as I am getting from you. Mine just needs a motor.

No. The wheelsets in the RTR PA's won't work. The axle ends are too short. I had the same problem on the SD45 (also has metal trucks) but fortunately I had a newer loco I never intended to run that had wheelsets that were a close match.

Evenin' folks!

Janie, just a decaf.  Gotta try to get a good nights sleep as tomorrow will be a long one.

Just hope the thunderboomers they are predicting don't happen....  This is our Museums biggest fund raiser for the year and if there is an electrical storm, we have to shut down the rails.  This is mostly due to the electric for the trolleys.  They head back to the barn and disconnect ASAP!  We will also have crews up at the old transfer point which doesn't have much of a shelter.  If it rains, not a problem, we just keep operating, but an electrical storm is problematic.

One of the locos we have not had fired up for diesel days the last couple years is Eastman Kodak #9, an ALCO RS1.  Doubt she will see service tomorrow either, but she is in reserve...  here she is being started for the first time this year last spring: http://www.youtube.com/rgvrrm#p/u/2/qKKzKEO1mYA

Oh!  Tom W, GO FOR IT!

Will be heading to bed soon.

Have a great night!

Fire Truck I am with Todd on this one, the U bolts had to break that hold them to the springs.

Yanking the rear end out with a chain myth. While it was funner than heck in American Graffiti, it won't happen. Myth Busters tried it and could not rip the rear end out of a police car till they took a cutting torch to the car. Boy they tried before they started cutting. Even at 60 MPH, rear end would not pull out from under the car.

Think it was Teen Steam that said it is not common to break a drive shaft / U joint. Smile, Wink & Grin You never had a Big Block Mopar with slicks have you!  All I can say is Thank Goodness for Drive Shaft Loops! I finally had to have a 3" stainless steel drive shaft made by the shop that did Bob Gliddens cars. Same specks as his drive shaft when he was King of Pro Stock, about 3 decades ago Whistling

Hum, wonder what NCIS show I will watch tonight? Whistling

I have done nothing today but lay around the shack waiting for that Mail Train to come back. Too bad my sweet baby's not here.  Ashamedly, it feels pretty good. I really haven’t even felt like going downstairs, just real worn out today. I might here in a bit, but more for a Beer than anything train related. Maybe not.

About the Fire Truck. I used to w**k on trucks of that size, though not Fire Trucks or buses, but the axles and setups were the same. The only way the rear end could come out in the condition it is in, is if the spring clamp bolts broke. That type rear end has the leaf springs usually setting on top of the axle and clamped to the housing with plates and bolts. For whatever reason the bolts had to break and then the truck would have pretty much just rolled off the assembly. Inertia. Gotta love it. More than likely they hit something pretty hard. Or, they don’t check their equipment very well.

ConfusedI’m trying to figure out why someone would disconnect the U-joint to change the shocks. Not to mention how the thing even moved without it being attached. Confused

Well, I’ve worn my…OH! Speaking of wells, we got a quarter inch of rain the other morning. Didn’t do anything really, but some is better than none. Anyway, I’ve worn myself out doing nothing so I best go rest. NCIS marathon on tomorrow on USA (little TM thing) network, so I wanna be rested for THAT.

Barry .... You can tell you are having a bad day if your house is on fire, and the fire truck does THAT on the way to your house!

Our neighbour reminded me of a situation he had with his pick up truck awhile back. He had just replaced the shocks on his truck. When he took it to work the next morning he discovered that he had left the U joint completely disconnected from the rear end...it kind of messed up his box a bit....

That firetruck rear end dropout- I've heard of broken U joints. They usually happen on 4x4s when they are lifted. Jeep JKs will break the U-joint if they have 40" offroad tires. I've heard of broken springs, blown shocks, Even breaking an axle tube. But never having a rear end fall out of a truck like that. And that's a heavy axle too.

Jeff- Best of luck hope you feel better

Good afternoon. It's 100 and mostly cloudy. It supposed to get to 105 (feels like 112). Had a bad night last night due to health problems. I slept in til 10 am. Not ten minutes after I got up my mother called wanting to go car hunting. So we checked out five lots in two towns and found two promising possibilities. A 2010 Chrysler Sebring 4-door (silver) and a 2010 Mercury Marquis (white). I just got back a little while ago and I'm hot and tired.I may get some work done on the layout later today then again maybe not.

Afternoon folks!

Flo, just a regular iced tea for the moment.

Just arrived home from the BBQ at the museum.  Had a way too large but tasty pulled pork lunch with all kinds of salad, corn bread, and brownies for dessert.....  Don't want to lnow what my blood sugar was a couple hours ago.  Also rode up and down the track a couple times....  We took the trolley from the transfer point we will be using for Diesel Days tomorrow all the way up to the NYMT out sister museum.  I found out I will be assigned the old Erie Caboose tomorrow for most of the day...  YES! Big Smile  She is 6 months older than I am.  Came out of the Dunsmore shops in May of 1946.  She was having trouble with the triple valve last Thursday and there was some doubt she would be running Sunday.  They spent yesterday getting it fixed and back in operation.  The Erie Caboose will be pushed by LV 211tomorrow...  My favorite loco in our collection...  I am looking forward to it!

Rob asked: "***Ray, interesting little engine there. What is that high tank between the engineer and engine?"  If you are referring to the Plymouth 7 ton Gas Mechanical locomotive I believe that is the gas tank...  The Buda gas engine (original BTW) would not have had a fuel pump, so the gas got into the carburator by gravity feed.  The engine was completely rebuilt as part of the restoration.  She was used mostly at construction sites during her long work career and came to us back in 1999 in pretty bad shape.  More has been done to bring her back to what she would have been like fresh from the factory back in 1920 when she was built since the video was put on line.  It is our oldest operating loco...

Barry,  OOOOOppppppppppssssss!

Got to run to the grocery store before supper, so I will catch you all later!

Garry - that´s the fun part of building mini-modules - near to instant reward Smile, Wink & Grin. It certainly shortens the dream-plan-build time!

I am going to pull the track on those three modules and build one long one. This is necessary as the platform pieces do not match the length of the modules - if I had known that earlier. Again, a nice thing with those mini-modules - it is not a big loss, neither in $$$, nor in time.

Good morning .... The diner has been rolling across Canada for about 20 days. Have we reached Alberta or British Columbia yet? I like the Canadian Rockies.

Cal Tom ... I like your photos. If you keep posting, it's fine with me. I though of you when Galaxy mentioned garage sales. I bet you have non of those at your house. As for your engine house, I think a removable roof is a good idea.  ... Sprung doors? Hmmmm. How does that work for you?

Curt .... You asked about turntables. I'm not an expert on them. They can be challenging to get adjusted and getting all the tracks lined up precisely.

Sue ... Thanks for the remarks. The rock strata is made with broken plaster pieces pancaked on top of each other. The pieces are held together with construction adhesive. Then, crevices are filled with spackling compound. Then, I apply several washes of very thin acrylic paint. Each wash is applied after the prior wash is completely dry. Finally, I add scenery such as ground cover and small trees. I takes a lot of waiting between each step so everything is dry before doing the next step.

Barry ... I wonder if the mechanic who worked on the fire truck's diferential found some extra bolts on his work bench the next day. Whistling

Ulrich ... You are amazing as you put together those great looking modules so quickly.

Morning all from SunnyCal--a VERY nice, cool (65) morning.  Delta breezes kicked in today, so hopefully our August heat wave (what there's been of it, at least) is over for a while.

Well, school starts Monday--at least the Faculty part of it.   Our annual Faculty Retreat, where we find out what awaits us this year with the kids.   Got the Calendar, and oboy, are we BUSY this year!   One of our students got a perfect 36 on the ACT test--turned out he was the only person in the entire US to get that high a score.  Hey, we must be doing SOMETHING right, LOL!   I was in the main office yesterday getting all of my stuff together, and our Very Cool Principal walked in and just stared at me for a moment.  I couldn't figure out what she was doing, until she grinned at me and said, "I LOVE it!"  Then I remembered--I grew a beard this summer.   "Can I keep it?"  I asked.  "Of course," she said.  "I don't look like a deranged Santa Claus?"   She laughed, "Well, just a LITTLE."

i'm gonna keep it.

Jeff:  I really like that paint-scheme on the diesel.  Very sharp!  Bow

Ulrich:  Like that station photo.  Thumbs Up

Barry:  Holy Cow, did that fire engine have a Big Burp or WHAT?  Whoa!!  Surprise

Curt:  If you've got room for it, you could do a 'circular' track'.  The old SP Donner Pass line has two 'balloon tracks', one at Emigrant Gap and one at Truckee, about 45 miles to the east that they used for turning helpers over Donner Pass.  So there are definitely prototypes for that.  I don't have room for a turntable on the Yuba River sub, myself, so I use my hidden lower-level return loop as a kind of 'balloon track' for turning my lokies.

Well, started ballasting on the Engine Terminal last night.  It should turn out OK, but that medium WS ballast kinda/sorta looks like boulders instead of ballast, LOL!   But I haven't started the actual ground cover yet, so I think I can disguise it pretty well.  I'll work on it today.  But at least the thing finally WORKS!!

That engine house has spring-loaded doors.  I don't know whether or not I'm going to keep them or just glue the doors open.  I'd kind of like to do an interior for it, a-la that terrific engine house of Ray's, but I'll have to think about it.  I left the roof removable just in case I decide to.  What do you think, Ray?

Well, time to feed the kitties (Uff-Dah is still grousing about his trip to the Vet yesterday.  I thought cats only had an 8-minute memory(?).   Not THIS guy!   Then go out to the garage and start tossing ground cover around.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Tom Big Smile

Good Near-noon-time all

Ulrich- that is some fantastic work!

There is a cat litter box in the train room/junk room/stuff we don't know what to do with room. MOH always takes care of it once a week.

I have been meanwhile running trains ont he under the tree layout that never came dowm.

Well I went in the train room/ everything else room and found the "wall'o'stuff" against one wall has a 25% LEAN to it!!! headed right for the layout!!! I MUST get in there soon, bad back or not, and DO something and get RID of stuff we don't need!!!

SOme neighbors having a garage sale nice if we knew in advance I'd have pulled stuff. I think much now will just be thrown out. THe closet is filled my MY stuff I had when I came to be with My Other Half 11 years ago. Thing is, I have NO IDEA what is in those boxess. or the boxes I lined the shed with so I THINK I DON'T NEED that STUFF anymore!!!

I have been talking about a yard sale for 2 years, but with my back porblems and surgeries Haven't been able to get to it.

Time for the trash bin.

WE have to do somehting aobut that room as a new furnace looks to be in our future and I have a feeling they will havet o tear out walls as furnace is built in.

I have been threatening to tear down the layout and maybe it time.

Whew!

Makes me tired thinking aobut it but SOMETHING must be down.

-G .

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.

After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.

Morning All,

Diners If you are willing I could use your help with some input on the following:

Just sitting here reading the forums and trying to decide what I want to do for a engine turn around area. I can add a 4x4 add on section butting up to the stub yard.

I have looked at probably 6-7 different turntables and I really need one that has a bridge of 20" for  E7 A&B units. The only one I have found is the Atlas O TT  (24" bridge) which would obviously require track modification on the bridge if that is even possible.

The other 2 options are a Wye which I don't think I have enough room on the ends (20") to fit in the space or,

A completely circular turnaround that has a wye turnout at the entry point. I figure I could make the circle with a 22-23" radius. With the constant circle I am concerned about the smoothness of the rail connections.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I received a Email from NJ Intl. after I posted last night. They said to send the signal back and they would replace it, so I am happy.

Sue- Thank you.

Talk to you all later.

Sue - the new part is the platforms (incl. the covered bit) and the little depot. It was a kit - my wife´s birthday present to me. The kit comes painted and lightly weathered, which I think is nice.

Good morning, Chloe.  I would like a tall black coffee.  It is Saturday, and moving this fast at 6:00am is a bit painful.

Curt,  Larry & I like the way the coal train disapears into the industrial area.

Garry,  Nice to see your photos.  I didn't see NP.  How did you make your rocks?  They look very natural.

Ulrich,  Which part of the station is the new part?  The foreground or the central part?  I like the covered areas.  Here in western Washington we have a lot of rain, so covered is good.

Sue

Goood Morning/Afternoon,

Chloe, coffee and a banana split, please.

Yesterday, my ear got all hot. I must have spent 6 consecutive hours on the phone. All those folks who call only once a year ... Whistling

This morning, I started assembling the station kit. It´s really a shake the box kit, all part fit nicely and you hardly need any glue.

I made a provisional set-up - just for taking pictures to share.

Of course there is still a lot of w*rk to be done to make it look nice, but just to give you an impression ... Smile, Wink & Grin

It is one of the rare nice days today - this summer has been one of the worst in the last 20 years, too much Umbrella and Storm. Temperature will be in the low 70´s, that´s perfectly fine for me.

Have a good weekend!

We are supposed to get extra gummy today with rain..heavy at times later on with those ol' t'underin'boomers tonight and overnight...

Jeffery You have a PM. I should be shipping this coming Wednesday or Thursday. Looking forward to the PA's and the 2-10-2. I PM Brandon (Darth Santa Fe) tonight to get his in sights on the motor and what is available. Do you think it would make a good DCC engine as it sits?

On the PA's, looking at my PK1's Erie Built's look like about the same wheel base. Hum, could I be so lucky.

The 2-10-2 should do fine with a decoder. As far as I know it has the same motor as the IHC offering. On the PA1, it's an old pre-1980 Athearn model and has different trucks than the modern units you have probably. The newer trucks won't fit it. They have a broad contact plate on them. These old trucks mount on pins. The side frames are metal. Power is picked up by the wheels and passed through the axle ends to the side frames. The headlight is built into the front truck. It doesn't use the bronze axle bearings that the post-1980 (modern) models use. The PB1 dummy that's with it has a frame that was bought much later and is a modern model with the post-1980 trucks you're used to seeing. I went through the PA1 and ditched the old high amp motor and replaced it with a much newer motor that can be run with a decoder. It came from a decoder equipped loco. I also replaced the shafts and worms and cleaned out the trucks.

***Ray, interesting little engine there. What is that high tank between the engineer and engine?

***Curt, nice progress on the layout.

Good night all.
