Good morning!  Just a coffee, please.  I'm still gumming my food.  I get my upper denture this morning and hopefully I can get used to it soon so I can eat real food!  My wife will be glad when she doesn't have to put my food through the blender for me to eat it.

I'm going to have to bite the bullet and jack up the water bill and water the front lawn this morning.  With that long spell of blistering hot temperatures it's more brown than green.  Oh well, at least the grass isn't growing and needing mowing.  Funny thing, there's a strip of almost dead grass from the house out to the public sidewalk right over where the sewer pipe runs out to the street.  Very strange.  It appears whenever we have a long hot dry spell, then comes back green after we get some good rains.

Ken:  I hope you can find a mechanic who can solve the problem with your car.  We're lucky that years ago we found a service station with excellent mechanics who put their customers' needs first.  They're good mechanics and we can trust them.  When you find someone like that, you don't let them go.

Well, I've got the two kinds of clapboard siding I need to scratch build that restaurant and I've taken photos of it and determined the dimensions.  All I had to go on was the size of the doors as there were too many people around for me to take a tape measure to the building, but the dimensions look like they're about right.  I think I'll draw it full size on a piece of paper using a scale ruler then transfer the lines to the styrene with carbon paper and cut it out.  It's going to be an ongoing project for a long time as there's too many things to do in our short summer.  We like to travel and go to the beach and there's only a couple of months left for that.  Yikes, where did the summer go?!

Okay, I'm off to set out the sprinkler then go to the dentist's.  The coffee was good.

Bob,

Do you have natural gas running from the sidewalk to the house?!?

You might have a leak...

My parents get that in their back yard every summer. In their case it's because there's a concrete drain tunnel that runs from the drain grates in the front yard, goes under the house to the back yard all the way down to the lake. The top of the drain tunnel is about 18" wide so that makes for an almost 2' wide strip of yellow/brown grass.

Nope.  The gas line, believe it or not, runs down the back lane.  That proved to be a huge problem a few years ago when they paved the lane.  The also installed a storm sewer down the centre of the lane, but because of the gas line and all the branches into the houses on both sides, they couldn't trench for the sewer but had to dig holes between the branches and drill between the holes for the sewer pipes.  It was a good thought, though. as gas would kill a lawn.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have the #2 special, over easy on the eggs, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sourdough toast to keep company with the dark roast coffee in a FGLK mug you brought me....  Thank you Ma'am!

Yellow/brown grass???  isn't THAT the usual color for this time of year?  Around here it turns green again a couple months from now so we have to mow it again.  THAT is good so we don't feel so bad about having to get the Snow Blower out......Whistling

'Tis a lovely day here in the Finger Lakes Region!  Current temperature is 78°F on its way up to the low to mid 80s this afternoon.  Clouding up outside right now and Geneva should be on the Southern edge of a group of thunder storms moving through the area.  Hopefully we may get a bit of rain for the garden.  (The lawn can just fend for itself and stay brown until October....)

I will be using today to put away, clean up, and do some w*rk on the engine house.  Think it is almost done for judging.  Need to get in contact with our AP chair and see how much of the roof I should have done for it, do the paperw*rk, and make an appointment for it to be judged.  One of the division members who has the structures certificate told me not to put any roof on until after it gets judged...... I shall see.  I was a bit shagrined when he checked it over to see him finding all the details and grinning from ear to ear!  No one at the picnic had any suggestions on anything that might not fly, and 3 of them are people who are qualified to do the "judging".  Next project will be to research and build an Octagonal Blacksmith's shop located a few miles North of me.  Hope to find out who owns the building and see if I can get permission to measure and draw the building.

Yes, there seems to be several old regulars who haven't been in for a while.... (sniff, sniff)  Hmmm, hope it's not me......Whistling

I had one of the Track Car guys almost unable to catch his breath yesterday....  Both of us who were docents were standing by the track when the track cars arrived with a full load of passengers.  I greeted them and told them what was open.  I then said if they have any questions about anything just speak with one of the "good looking" gentlemen with the funny stripped hats (Only the 2 of us docents were wearing them).  I then said if they couldn't find anyone who fit the description they could just talk to one of us.....  Laugh

Best get busy!

Later!

Morning all from SunnyCal:

Our heat wave--what there was of it--broke yesterday, temp only got into the high 80's, which for July seems more like September around here.  Today's supposed to be low 80's, and should last through Wednesday, when another heat wave rolls up from the South--Arizona and Nevada.   This means thunderstorms in the eastern Sierra around Lake Tahoe, but that's what we normally get this time of year.  Like I said, here in the Valley lately, if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes, LOL!

Well, I got my new Pittman motor from Bowser--the one to re-motor that big Espee AC-9 I acquired a couple of months ago.  I forgot to specify the type of DC-70 I wanted, and it came in with a worm gear attached to the shaft.  Oops!   So I took a long, hard look at it--saw that the shaft extended through the worm gear by about 3/4 of an inch, enough room to slip the universal coupling onto it, and decided what the Heck, let's try it out.  Well, it works just fine.  The old KTM 'screaming' motor was put to rest, the new Pittman installed, and the big (5-pound) lady started Crawling all over the place.  Oddly enough, that cast-on brass worm gear acts kinda/sorta like a flywheel.  Very smooth start-ups and stops.  And the open frame motor is very quiet, so it doesn't sound as if I'm operating a coffee-grinder with wheels. Stick out tongue  Of course, I'm still thinking of alternatives to my Sponge-Cake yard ladder.  I'm seriously considering Homaboard, especially since it's manufactured by a company just north of where I live.

Ah, it's so NICE to be back in the hobby, LOL!

Ulrich:  I like that module of yours--it reminds me of the Moffat Line out of Denver clinging to the escarpment of the Rockies.  Can't wait to see the finished product.

Jeff:  VERY glad you got the approval for the brace.  Thumbs Up  Now if you could just get the rest of your family to give you some help with your parents--

Stan:  Unfortunately, I don't have any good photos of an M-4.  You'd think I would, since I"ve got 3 of them running on my layout--about the only thing I've got is a Baldwin builder's photo, but nothing of the big ladies in action.  And I agree with Ken--that very fine model engine house photo of yours would make a GREAT painting.

Ray:  So glad you don't need air-conditioning up there in the Finger Lakes right now.  Question--I'm not that familiar with upstate NY geography, but how close is the Mohawk Valley?  Reason I ask, is that some of my forbearers come from that area--still have a cousin or two living there.  Don't laugh, but they were "Hessians" originally, brought over from Germany to fight for the British during the Revolution, changed sides and settled in the Mohawk.

Went into Roseville yesterday, needed some more background trees for the layout.  Found a little 'forest' kit that had this cute little foot-bridge included.   Put it over the South Fork and plopped a fisherman on it (illegally, of course, this is October, LOL!).   Kinda low over the water, so I don't know what will happen to it if I ever decide to model the Spring Runoff--but what the Hey.

Well, that's about it from SunnyCal--I'm going to go out and boil some SuperTrees--replacing all of those WS Fall 'clumps' with real leafy stuff.  Should be fun.

Best to all, prayers to those in need (especially those in Norway).

Sorry Zoe

I have written five do you hear me five post and none posted ! Okay I feel better. Dang it gotta go back to w**k!

Real quick

Cuda - on the tire issue. Try a couple of things.

First find out the speed at which the tire place balances the tire. Most places use 55 as the speed at which they balance the tire.

At whatever speed they use test run the car at THAT speed and see if you have vibration

Next jack the car off the ground and spin the tire. Do you see any wobble in the tread pattern If not next try this

Put a fixed object near the tire as you can get it without rubbing.Spin the tire slowly. If it hits the tire or the gap changes the tire is out of round.

Lastly grab the tire (while still in the air ) and try to wiggle it from side to side. If it does you may have some connection problems. I have seen a lot of stuff-bad connecting rods, tires that were not tightened properly....

Todd- Ask your MIL docs to look into Avastin- new drug on the market (2 years) it attacks the cancer by starving it vs the old stile of trying to kill the cells. They are having great success with it. If you want to know more send me a private message and we can discuss it further,it has saved MOH life. She was given a death sentence and should not be alive now. But she is and is growing stronger!

Jeffrey:  That concrete drain in your parents' yard sounds similar to my situation.  There would be a concrete, or maybe plastic--pipe under that dead strip, but it would be way down below the level of the basement floor past the frost line.  It could be because the trench for the pipe was filled with gravel up close to the surface and the grass doesn't have enough depth of soil.   One of life's little mysteries, I guess.

Howmus:  "Snow blower"??!!  Wash your mouth out with soap!  Snow is a 4-letter word.  That will come soon enough, let's not think about snow blowers yet.

Afternoon folks!

Flo, just an unsweetened iced tea for me right now.

Finally getting some decent rain here in Geneva.  We are under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning at the moment, but THAT looks like it should stay a bit South of here.  We are getting a nice steady gentle rain.

Tom, the Mohawk Valley separates the Adirondack Mountains and the Catskill Mountains in New York (Both are part of the Appalachian Mountain Range).  The Mohawk River is 140 miles long and connects with the Hudson River just North of Albany.  The Mohawk River Basin was thee route west through NYS during the Colonial Period and was the site of many Revolutionary war battles.  Oh yes, We studied the "Hessions" way back when I was in 7th. Grade in NYS History.  Yes, still a lot of German Heritage in the area that can trace their families back to the Revolutionary war era.  The Mohawk Valley enabled the NYC to have the famous "Water Level Route" to Chicago.  Best known cities along the Mohawk would be Utica, NY; Rome, NY; Canajoharie, NY; and Schenectady, NY.  The Erie Canal used the same route through the mountains, and today both NYS Rte. 5 and the US - 90 (NYS Thruway) travel through the Mowhalk Valley.  The Finger Lakes are located to the West of that area.  The Finger Lakes are carved out of the foothills to the Catskill Mountains and the North ends of most of them are about where the Great Lakes Plain begins.  We are About 100 Miles to the west of Utica, NY, Syracuse being about halfway.  Beautiful country!

So far I have accomplished almost nothing today, so I think I should at least continue doing whatever it is I'm doing.......

Warning - rant ahead!

Gave the module a test run, only to find out that the clearance in the short tunnels is not sufficient. Got out a knife to enlarge, which worked OK, but quite a lot of the clump foliage found its way onto the floor

Bang HeadBang HeadBang Head

Half a day´s w*rk dumped!

Bang HeadBang HeadBang HeadCrying

Took the whole thing into the attic, glued all the clump foliage down - now it´s there, waiting for the glue to set! Don´t want to see it for the rest of the day.

Hopefully, by tomorrow ... Cool

Although it's been hot and humid here in Pittsburgh, we enjoyed the weekend. The first good thing was I managed to snag a new, in the box, Conrail SD80MAC from Kato on E-Bay. I've been wanting one of these guys for sometime. Norfolk Southern has 16 of them, all of which were acquired from Conrail. I see them being used as helpers from South Fork to Altoona when we are railfanning that area. They are very impressive in size and sound.

There is suppose to be a small break in the weather tomorrow, so we are planning to drive up to the Crsson-Cassandra area to railfan.  This is the area I mentioned before. It's just been too hot lately, but I'm beginning to have withdrawl sysptoms, so I better feed my habit.

Yesterday we attended a performance of "Sound of Music" at the Civic Light Opera. It was a well done performance. Most impressive was the young lady who played the part of the oldest Von Trapp children. She graduated high school in June and was the 2011 winner of the Gene Kelly Award for best actress. She now goes on to compete in the Nationals. Quite talented with a wonderful voice. It was as though she had been doing this for many years. She plans to attend college in the fall majoring in dramatic arts. I think if I live long enough, I will surely see her again. There really are a lot of talented and impressive young people out there if we take the time to see them.

The wife has informed me that she would like to go to the casino on Wednesday, and to see the new Harry Potter movie sometime this week. This is sort of like blackmail on her part in exchange for railfanning and constantly adding to my collection of Western Pennsylvania  locomotives and cars. One of us had better do pretty good at the casino to pay for all this, or I'm going to have to come out of retirement again.

Hope everybody has a good one. Tom

Todd, yeah, I got up late today, but if I hurry i might get a nap in before bedtime tonight.... Whistling

Been an interesting afternoon here!  One of the things I needed to do was pick up a case of copy paper at Staples since I have a couple of close dated "Rewards" coupons worth $40 I wanted to use.  Went over to the store, got a case of paper, and went to the checkout....  Credit Card was refused...  Hmmmm....  I paid with a picture of Hamilton, and headed over a couple stores to Peebles to take advatage of their huge sale and use a 20% off coupon I had for them....  Credit Card refused again.....  Grumpy  {iad with a photo of Jackson this time.  Decided I best come home and see what was going.  Found a message on my phone machine (I seldom even look at the d@%ed thing.  Listened to it and it said "lksddjvaa alkdv alksdnj from Credit card Fraud unit. your aslkjdb., a kjbask akmc,m"  Hmmm again.  listened to it about 10 times and figured out they had given me a "case #" and i was suppossed to call them.  Now this call came in while I was typing my earlier post and since it was an 888 number I did what any intelligent person would do!  Ignore it!

Rather than call back (I don't ever call 888 #s) I drove down to the Credit Union to have the head of the loan Dept. straighten it out.  I walked into the office and who should be walking out of her office, but Ann the person I wanted to see.  She said, "Hi Ray", and I said, "You're just the person I need to see...."  She called up the VISA Fraud Unit, verified that I was indeed the person the person who owns the card and was known to her....  Seems like somebody hacked PayPal and tried to put through a $900 charge and a $400 charge on my Credit Card.  My card has been cut up and the account closed!  New card will be mailed soon.

THAT was the excitement for today!  I do hope there is no more excitement for the rest of the day.  Don't need any more. Smile, Wink & Grin

Ray, i had a strange incident this afternoon  as well.

I got an official looking email from Paypal asking for me to reconfirm or re-register so that I would not be inconvenienced by having no service from them.  I know that they don't operate that way so I just deleted it.

They are indeed . and although I know we are supposed to turn the other cheek, I find it difficult and wish those scam artists NO end of BAD LUCK.

A little while ago I got an update on the status of my father's car. It won't be ready until Wednesday or possibly Thursday. They had to order a new ignition switch for it. We're hoping that corrects the problem. That means my father will be using my mother's car tomorrow so I'll be driving my old battlewagon to and from my appointment in DeRidder tomorrow. I hope the weather continues it's behavior and there's no rain as the windshield wipers aren't dependable. There's a fault either in the motor or the switch. At times the wipers will run without a problem and other times they'll stop for anything from a second to a couple of minutes then resume operation. If I pull over and reach out and pull on the wiper arm the motor will resume operation. Now that the word is out it'll come a flood tomorrow.

Oh, was going to tell you....  Something BIG went down in the Hood here this afternoon.  Right around the corner up the street.  Have no idea what it was, but it involved 2 ambulances and 5 pole-ice cars....  Now THAT be  2 more than I knew even existed here in Geneva......  All kinds of sireeeeens and flashin red, yellow, and multicolored lightie thingies.....  Been a good day to just set back and observe Humanity at its worst, so to speak....  yep!  Interstin' day.......Whistling

What's THAT Janie?  Nope, ya can't have my Credit Card until they sends me a new one!   Jess put 'er on the tab if you would.

Good Evening,

Well hopefully this post works as my last several attempts have failed despite using the 'torn page' icon.

It is late now so I'll just wish everyone a goodnight and sleep well.

 Evening Folks

Flo, I will take a ice tea please.

Grim Reality is sinking in. I AM BROKE! At this point I really don't see a light at the end of the tunnel, not even a on rushing Freight Train. After I give the electric company another $100.00 (they want $126.00) I will have $74.00 to last us two weeks. I will have cash in $480.00 from savings and add it to all of this coming check to make the house payment. That will only leave $360.00 in savings, not much to fall back on.

While Work is picking up just a little I don't for see any commission or bonus coming for some time.So the Beer has to stop and no more Diet Dew. Grumpy

I may have drop the internet as well, hate to do that but something has to give. Main reason I hate to drop it (besides you folks) is looking for a job and selling things to meet the bills.

Maybe time to let Bank Of Stupid take the house. While the house payment is tuff at $875.00 a month the summer time electric bill is killing me. May was only $78.00, but June was $215.59 and July is $280.10. August last year was $360.00! Ick!  With a $250.00 electric bill, $100.00 Budget Gas Bill, $25.00 water bill and $130.00 cable / phone / internet bill that is $505.00 + plus the $875.00 house payment that is $1380.00 a month. With no commission I only bring home $1720.08, that is only $340.08 to live on.

Well, you do what you got to do. So no more beer, no more diet dew, no more meat and go shoot the main central air unit. My wife will not stop turning it down to 68 degrees and I am not home to stop her.

Sorry to be such a downer tonight. But have have had nothing but constant worries for the last 3 weeks. Then I had the Dodge Daytona die, T/C A/C goes out and then the tire.

Vibration problems Thanks for all the answers, but at this point it is going to have to take a back seat to other things, like keeping the lights on. It has not gotten worries in 30,000 miles so I can live with it for now. But, sure be nice is it rode like a Town Car should.

Again, I am sorry to be so self centered tonight.

Evening/morning everyone.

Not much time to talk, just stopping in. I have to be up early (by eleven) Smile, Wink & Grin tomorrow because I have w**k from 12-4. After that, I might have some various things on the to-do list, along with homework, but then I might have some time to play with my new toys Mischief But more on THAT tomorrow.

Catch ya later,

-Joe

Good Morning Gang!

Flo, only coffee for me, please.

Petra and I will be going out for lunch today. It is our 27th wedding anniversary today. We will go to our favorite Chinese restaurant - they have reduced prices over noon - could not afford to go out for dinner. We have not been eating out for a long time, so it´ll be a treat and a feast!

Ken - I am so sorry to hear about your ongoing financial problems. I wish there were something I could do to help. Just imagine the two of us teaming up and start a business of our own, selling home made cakes and pastry, like "Petra´s Pastry Parlor" - it´ll be a booming success, with your selling talent, Petra´s cooking and baking skill and my talent to organize things. If there would be that ditch called Atlantic Ocean in between us ... I do hope that things improve in time at your end - my Angel for that.

Bill - you sure are a man of few words Smile, Wink & Grin

Ray - I am glad I don´t have a credit card anymore. I don´t even do my banking through the internet - the little i have to do I do at my local bank. Makes ordering things a little bit more difficult, but that helps me to curtail my spendings Laugh

Well, that´s all for the moment - got to go back to w*rk on my module!

Have a good day, everyone!

Just did a little surfing the web, waiting for the glue to set.

Found my dream loco:

It´s a N scale kit, sells for way too many $$$, needs way too many skills to assemble, but, heck, why not dream about it?
