Evenin' folks!
Flo, Just a decaf for me right now.... I'll be in the back near the air conditioner.
'Tis 10PM here in the Finger Lakes and the temp has finally dropped below 80°F. Yep 79°F outside. the air will stay on all night tonight and tomorrow night which will be even warmer.... Talking 98°F tomorrow. I can't remember it ever being 98°F around here! And I have a good memory for such things.
If any of you are interested, here is a news story about the accident over in Yates County yesterday. The driver of the car is being held in Yates County Jail (don't think he will be able to make bail). He is being charged with 5 counts of criminally negligent homicide and a slew of lesser charges as well. He may be gone for a while when the dust settles. http://rochester.ynn.com/content/top_stories/550585/driver-charged-in-deadly-crash-has-criminal-past/
Curt, looks like you are making good progress on the layout. I hope you have measured well with the tunnel as it looks to be very close to the next track.... I'm wondering if by the time you add the plaster and scenery if you could have some clearance problems??? Might just be the angle the photo shows......
I got the second coat of paint on the door tonight. Tomorrow before it gets in the high 90's I hope to put the outside trim in place and cut the other needed pieces. Weeded a bit of garden while waiting for the paint to dry.... needed it! Then I headed down cellar to paint the Smoke Jack for the Engine House. Also got out the old Timesavor and started to get it cleaned up and operable for Saturday. I will be bringing it to the NMRA Picnic for some folks to try their hand doing some switching.
Catch you all later!

Hello Fellow Dinners! Can you hear me over Billy Idol?
Rob got me back into the Sterno mode tonight! Have Billy Idol cranked at 102 db at peaks. (I have a db meter) Working the Mono Blocked Amps (600 watts a side) and letting the Dahlquist speakers stretching there legs!
For anyone wondering what the speakers look like, here you go.
Big black thing in front of the speaker is one of the Mono Blocked Adcom GFA-555 Amps, I have 2 of them and each ones pumps out 600 watts bridged Mono. They are the Big Boy's of amps. OK, for Tom, they are Yellowstone's
Sound Stage is great, I cannot tell where the speakers are sitting. I all so run a Carver 4000t preamp. Pure sound bliss. This gear is well over 30 years old and still rocks! Guess it is the Brass of Audiophile gear.
OK, my ears are starting to Ring!
See you all latter, not sure about hearing you!

Evening all.
Had a decent day at w**k. I was working the counter today (but also took two tables and a delivery), so I didn't make a lot. Between the tables, the delivery, and the tip jar, I got $22. And since I was on the schedule as counter, I'll also be getting hourly, around $6.50/hr.
Chris (cdog), glad to see you've come over from TMRP. to the diner!
Ray, that accident sounds terrible. The victims and their families are most certainly added to the prayer list.
Tim- Dang, no steak... I hear you on the delayed delivery dates. I ordered my Atlas Trainman Plus genset in August 2009, with a delivery date of January 2010. January rolls around, and the date was pushed to June 2010. June, and still nothing. The thing finally arrived in November 2010.TEN MONTHS LATE. And then of course, I fried the circut board within a week, and it's been sidelined until now... And I still won't even know if it w**ks or not until next time I go up north.
jefferey-wimberlyWent to the fire dept meeting this evening. It was HOT!
Curt, very nice work on the layout. However, I'm with Ray- are you sure about those clearances?
Ken? What? What was that? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!!!!
Well (deep subject [sorry, Ray ]), that's it from me for now. I'll be browsing the rest of the forums for a while.

Have a good day all. I hope to sleep through as much of it as possible.

I don,t think I,m waiting anylonger. I do know where I can get another turntable. A hobby store in Alliance Ohio makes a 134ft turntable. One was featured in an issue of MRR. I will find the issue and let you guys . It,s a craftsmans kit only thing they had a fire in Jan but the store owner assured me they will open in late August. And get this it,s much cheaper than Walters! I guess I,ll call Internet Hobbies and get my money back.

Good Morning!! Coffee and an order of Biscuits and Gravy please. Thanks. Um, could you make my coffe like Inch has his please. See if it helps. My Prayers for the families of those involved in the accident. Sunny and hot, with a high near 98. Heat index values as high as 113. Temps are a dropping. Tomorrow they are predicting a drop of aNOTHER 2 degrees. If all goes as predicted, possibly rain Sunday night and downright freezing Monday with a high of only 89. Summer is over boys, summer is over. You know the older you get, the faster time flies. Eat all the corny dogs you can, cause sooner than you think, it'll be too late.

Welp, we had some bad news last night. MIL was diagnosed with Colon Cancer. They are supposedly to release her from the horsepiddle sometime today to rest and recoup from the last few days ......in the hospital. Then she will go back for a Cat scan to see if it has reached the liver. No prognosis yet. I make fun that every Doctor wants to go looking up your butt because it’s closest to you wallet, but I’m beginning to think that, with a few other people I know, I will probably not resist when the ole Doc gets a smile on his face and says “ 50 eh?”
On to something more….happy. Today, despite the heat WHICH, by the way should be cooler than Lee’s by two degrees. And if you think about it depending on the temps, a drop of two degrees is enough to freeze water or even steel. True statement. ...Anyway, I need to get the hay raked at Mom’s that I didn’t do yesterday like I should have. I was out there and when I got to that point I wiped the sweat from my brow, placed my arms akimbo, said "might as well do it now, before it kills the grass", walked to the truck to get the rake, got to the truck, opened the door …., and opted to go to the grocery store instead. Remember? I needed that light bulb….CFL I guess we call them now. Yes, the squiggly ones. Excpt these are encased in a flood looking....bulb. So….who knows. I have to w**k tonight anyway. Might find out if they are going to for sure want me to change my Tuesday nights for Wednesday nights (long story. Let's just say everybody wants to work with the Toddster). Ok with me I guess. That would give me Wed, Thu, Fri all in a row to work, then foru (Edit: Sorry, that's Portuguese slang for "four") straight days off. An acceptable ratio for a retired guy, but first Wed of the month is Church meeting. Then again I don’t look to be there much longer than after the house sells, so it‘s not like for ever. Then again I may stay on. Decisions. Who knows….. The Shadow knows

Morning! Been away too long! I always wanted to go to Ohio.. we're still there I hope. (I haven't read through all the posts.) Decaf and those biscuits and gravy sound good! Good to see familiar faces around. Going to try to pop in every once in a while.
Amazing how work and college take up so much time. After 1.5 years of estate settling and sibling issues, my life is my own (somewhat) again. Finally graduated and of course had to start on the Masters program. My Maxwell House coffee plant warehouse (roofless) has been turned into a catbed by the kitten, and the Hoboken RR freight cars sit in various states of completion. All waiting for attention.
Ahh! breakfast has arrived!
Good morning everyone!
It looks like a nice day to retreat back to the basement and run the trains! sometimes you can compare the oppressive heat outside to a below zero winter day! Either way, I find it a good time to get things back in order. Yesterday I had the company of my 2 youngest sons, John and Alex to have a sort of inpromptu operating session. Lots of fun! I think if I wasn't there, there would have been some racing going on between the new Hudson and Alex's red Pennsy K4! The problem is we always keep 4 slow freights on the mainlines, 2 eastbound and 2 westbound. It makes it difficult for them to build up a head of steam.
Ray, we heard about the awful accident on the Buffalo news channels here. Another tragedy on our roads.
Yougottawanta, Of course I'll repost the image, here you go:
When my oldest son Shane got home late last night, he and I discussed plans for our future roundhouse at this site:
I'm thinking about just leaving the fan tracks as they are, and building a new roundhouse with matteboard like the previous one. If you're wondering why we changed it, we replaced an old Bowser turntable with a new Walthers 130' TT. We couldn't turn our C&O Allegheny, or the Pennsy T1 before. The old roundhouse was pretty nice, and I saved the back wall with the intention of building a new one from it. Shane wanted to consider building the walthers large roundhouse kit with the extensions, but I told him he'd have to pony up the dough for at least half of it! Considering the fact that the basic kit is a 3 stall roundhouse and the extensions required for a 15 stall roundhouse would be quite expensive, he went with my idea. We could always attempt a rebuild with the kits later.
Well fellas, I gotta get a move on, I promised Jerry I'd open the rail museum for him, and it's almost time. I only gotta be there until Noon.
Have a good day!

Good morning. It's 76° and mostly cloudy. The high will be 94° and there's a 10% chance of a thunderstorm in the morning and the afternoon and a 50% chance this evening. Either way I don't see there being much, if any rain.On the layout front, I ran the two SDP40F's and the two Bachmann GP7's. The geeps run much better since I pitched the Bachmann decoders and replaced them with Digitrax DZ125's. I'm thinking about programming a MARS light function for each of them.Had to take some time this morning to help my father get his car to the repair shop. The starter bendix jammed and kept the starter drive gear engaged to the flywheel while he was driving the car. Naturally it burned up the starter. So he got a new starter for them to put on. I'm going to be trying to stay indoors during the hot part of the day. I got somewhat of a sunburn yesterday morning while I was cutting the grass and that was under cloud cover.

Good Afternoon!
Strong coffee for me, if you please, Flo!
A dull day today. I woke up too early and now I feel tired all day long. The toothache is gone for the moment, but I need to get a dentist´s appointment to have that checked.
My bridge arrived, so I am now all set to build the new module. The bridge and some track already received their light spray coat of dark brown - looks much better than the plasticky black of the untreated track. The bridge itself needs a few strokes with weathering powder - ready to go!
Ray - that´s a horrifying accident! My to the victims and their families! I am sure you will get the merit award for your engine house. Those tools must be tiny! Now can you do them in N scale
Jeff - very nice picture - I can almost hear the rumble the GP 9 (?) and the bell as it "clanks" past the filling station.
Ken - sounds as if the spell´s broken now. Ken? Ken??
Stan - you must be ready to open your own gallery of steam. Not only do you do fantastic paintings, but you do them at the speed of lightning!
Back to the sofa - I am not up to speed today.

Morning all from SunnyCal:
It was 95 here yesterday--we seem to be getting back to our normal July weather out here. Supposed to hover between the 90's and low 100's for the next week. Which means fan time in the garage.
One thing about our weather--and I say this VERY cautiously--since our heat index is rising, that means that our unusual Alaskan Front is moving north of here and could start pumping down through Canada into the Midwest again. That's what one of our Meterologists said on the TV last night, at least. So help may be on the way for the rest of you guys. I sure hope so! I saw a report on the news the other night about how the heat wave is affecting just the cattle industry in Texas, for example--hay crops not growing because of the drought--and it was heartbreaking: ranchers having to sell off half of their herds because of a lack of fodder and the price of available fodder shooting through the roof. Combine that with the horrible fires in that area--all of you people in the Midwest and east need a break. I sure pray that you get it soon. Hey, I'll put up with 100+ out here for a while if it'll give the rest of you some decent weather!
Jeff: What a terrible accident. I'm with you--throw away the key!
Stan: Love that encore of the "J". I MEAN it about the M-4 if you ever decide.
Well, decided to paint and decal that big ol' AC-9 I acquired about a month ago. Got everything ready for the Big Operation and realized that I was out of semi-gloss finish to mount the decals. Trip to Bruce's. You'll be VERY proud of me, I walked in, TOTALLY IGNORED the Brass Case, went right to the Glosscote (actually Model Master semi-gloss finish), took it to the counter to a Very Amazed Bruce who just stared at me and said, "That's IT?"
It's a honey of a loco, but direly in need of a motor replacement. I thought the drive train was stiff until I dismounted the motor and found out that even with that peculiar (!) reduction gear, it was nice and loose. 'Tis the old motor that's tight. Cleaned it, but didn't improve it very much. Ordered a new Pittman DC-70 from Bowser yesterday, should have it in a week or so. Between the new motor and the weight of the loco itself (almost 5 pounds), it should be doing some heavy crawling pretty soon. Paint job doesn't look bad (I am a Spray Can Rembrandt like Jeff--only in my case more of a Spray Can Toulouse-Latrec, LOL!). Actually, the older I get, the better I seem to get at it. I'll post some photos of her when she's up and running.
It just dawned on me that I've got 3 M-4 2-8-8-4's and now 2 AC-9 2-8-8-4's. Hmm--should I get the new Bachmann EM-1 2-8-8-4 as a WWII 'loaner' when they come out in October? Decisions, decisions--okay, okay, I have a THING for Yellowstones. So sue me! Reminds me of one of our old posters in Europe--Sweden, I think--that had models of all 25 Big Boys, LOL!
Got all the track problems solved--replaced the Sinohara turnout instead of ripping everything out and abandoning the crossover. My new Genesis F-3 set started stopping dead at every turnout, but then I found out that it was just dirty wheels. My steamers slid through fine. Alcohol and a Q-tip solved the F-3 problem. And no, the Yuba River Sub is NOT converting to diseasel. Not in MY lifetime, at least.
Well, higher temps out here means that plaster cloth will dry pretty quick, so with fan in tow, I'm out to spend some time on my mountains. Messy is FUN!
Best to all, and prayers for a cool-down east of the Rockies.
Tom

Flo, Frosted Flakes still sound great, and cold. Bowl please and a Diet Dew.
Car A/C Well, there is no A/C Relay and Bob's thinks it is the motor. Found one for $22.99 and getting ready to pick it up. Motor installs from under the hod and book time is only .60 of a hour. So as far as repair cost, I lucked out. It will be well worth it with the heat we had yesterday.
Ulrich So, you have to go to training for a job that does not exist? Sounds about right for a government program.
Well as much as I would like to hang around the dinner, guess I better get moving.
cudaken Ulrich So, you have to go to training for a job that does not exist? Sounds about right for a government program.
Yup, that´s the way it is. Hard to understand, but I´ll be off the unemployment statistics for a while. Unfortunately, I could not persuade them to send me off to law school - that´d be a little bit more in line of what I did before...
Good Morning All..It is sunny and 83 here headed to 98 with a heat index I don't even want to talk about..Sallie and I only got out about 9 last nite to water 'matters and flowers..
Stan..Wow TT looks great..how about some more photos of your layout?

Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, a bowl of organic cranberry blueberry high fiber cereal and a cup of dark roast for me this morning.
Temp outside the door is already 91°F (Heat index is at 98°) and on its way up to 98° early this afternoon. My son and granddaughters are going to a water park today to stay cool. Lucky they have a finished basement (where the MIL Lives) that stays cool during these times, so i bet they will be down there most of the day. So far (knock on wood) my air conditioners are holding their own. can't wait to see what my electric usage is for the month. Luckily I have excellent insulation in the house and it is both easy to heat and to cool. In the attic, the 2 x 8 cieling rafters are filled and have another 6" bat of fiberglass on top of THAT. Sidewalls have old R-13 (?) fiberglass and the siding foundation added another R-4 to it. All windows are double pane thermals.
Tom, send that "cool" air up here please.... THAT is hot enough for us in the Northeast!
I am going to do more on the door of the shed. i will go and w*rk for about 15 minutes and then come to the house and cool off.
Ulrich, not sure whether the tools are made in "n"visible scale or not. I bet you could scratch built some of the larger ones......
Best get moving before it start to get hot outside......
Later!
Good morning.
I'll have cantaloupe this morning, please.
(Actually, I "can't elope". I'm already married.)

Flo- Hack cough wheez wheez , air please , COOL air please . getting close to 100 here. Heat index is supposed to be 105 today. No AC, out in the heat, little shade. This is one of the days THAT one hates to work construction.
Some good news on the w**k front. Excavator has fired their super and replaced him with someone I can work with. . Home front mower still down. But the grass has stopped growing.
Jeff - yep I agree hang em. I have had five family members killed by drinking drivers. Dont have a lot of sympathy for them.
Todd - already said a prayer for your ML. How is your other half holding up during this?
Stan - thank you thank youthank you- THAT is more beatiful than the Mona -lisa

***Tom, have you considered getting a spare Yellowstone, or a dozen more, just incase any of your present beasts give you trouble? Can't have too many backups for the backups, eh? Now I'm curious, what is your smallest loco?
***Stan, that is an impressive array of steam power there. And the layout is superb.
***Ken, my brother said I should hear your set up to appreciate it. I'll share part of his e-mail regarding this stuff with you off forum. I found some of it interesting.

Afternoon all.
Not much going on today. Spend the first half of the afternoon at the beach, and now I'm off to w**k at four.
Barry, nice pictures.
Eric! Great to hear from you again! Sounds like you've been busy while you were gone. Hope you're doing well.In response to your question, yes the 3010 is the GP40-2 assigned to local H-02 out of Dover, NJ. It has been assigned to Dover since I think 2007 and has "ASSIGNED H0 2 DOVER NJ" stenciled on the cab. See photos below:
Todd, sorry to hear about MIL. She is in our prayers.
Stan, that is quite an impressive collection!
Jeff, I second what Ulrich said- Nice picture; very realistic!
Look at you guys complaining it's hot... Yeah, it's pretty hot, but there was a nice breeze on the beach. Maybe, for August, we'll move the diner to the Jersey Shore. Not Seaside Heights, but the end of the North Jersey Coast Line in Bay Head, NJ, five miles north of Seaside. I don't think you guys would appreciate being near THEM (you know who I mean), nor would Vinny appreciate the Diner being pulled down Route 35 South, where the tracks were removed over fifty years ago...
Well, I better get ready to go. Catch you guys later!

EDIT: Look's like I've got TOP. Since I'm w**king tonight, tonight's special is PIZZA!
Afternoon folks!
Flo, just a RBF and a seat right by the air conditioner please......
We did it!!! Broke the century mark here in the Finger Lakes... Yep! 100°F outside for the last hour or so. By 10PM though it will be a much more comfortable 90° or so. I can stand being outdoors for about 5 minutes and have to get back in the house. I drove over to the Allergist office to get my shots and just the walk in from the parking lot had me drenched in sweat. Lucky I have lots of stuff to do down cellar.... I think I am going to pass on the R&GV RR meeting tonight. It is even too hot to ride trains.... Can you imagine what it must have been like to be firing a steam loco in this weather???
This might make some of us feel better: In 1983, Vostok, Antarctica dropped to -129°F, the coldest temperature recorded anywhere in the world.
Hey! Stay cool out there!
Whew! Lemonade please. Lots of lemonade!
Just got back from raking the lawn at Mom's. Still not done though. I have an acre to hand rack. Not a whole lot but at 115 degrees with sun...bright sun, even the sun bonnet says go inside. Luckily I sweat like there is no tomorrow so even the slightest breeze feels good. Time for a shower and then get ready to go to w**k.
Eric! good to see you back hoss! How's things been?
Brenda came home and she's all upset because they've decided to not let her Mother go home today and instead ordered a barrage of tests to get ready for a surgery to remove the huuuge palyp that is cancerous ASAP without doing the test for to see if it has progressed. I told her to not read in to what the doctors are doing, they may just as well have decided to see if she can withstand the surgery now and get the big thing out now instead of later because it will have to be taken out anyway. She (MIL) has had heart attacks and has a defibulator so they are runnin every test in the book to insure she can handle a surgery. ANY surgery is what I told her, even if it was to remove her tonsils. I think it helped a bit because she knows I have been through it all with my Mom, but I'm afraid Brenda is so scared that her Mom cannot survive a surgery that it is short lived. No, she is not taking this well. She was very close to my Mom whon she lost in January and now this situation with hers 7 months later..... all I cn do is pray. Kick me out for saying it but that's the truth.
All will be Allright in the end but for now it's rough. Veeeery close family. My son isn't taking it well, daughter will be a delayed reaction and Brenda, well, watching her go through it is the worst. Even with my Mom she was bad. Hopefully the next couple weeks will be good news.
Its not that bad today.
One of Jeff's hot sauce lemonades please. Thank you
Got my tires in for my quad runner. Came in today and I want to pick them up tomorrow.

Been a busy day here. The repair shop called stating that my father's car was ready. We went and retrieved it. From there we went to Wal-Mart to do a bit of grocery shopping. I was able to get some items I wasn't able to get yesterday due to mobility issues. He was kind enough to pay for my groceries (six or seven items) so I still have some money left. We put the groceries in the trunk of my mother's car which I drove back home. I stopped at my place first and put the box of chicken I had gotten in the freezer then went on to my parent's place and off loaded their groceries. I put the perishable items in the fridge, they can deal with the rest. These are all things my sister and niece and their respective husbands and my nephew could help them with but none of them have time in their schedules to help. They have time to do many other unimportant things but none to help with this. I'm the one who's bending over backward to help my parents and the others wonder why I get invited to lunch, dinner, special things. Go figure.
Ray,
We did it!!! Broke the century mark here in the Finger Lakes...
I read that and the first thought I had was "What does that mean for the grapes?" Not good news I'm sure. It reached 95 here in Pittsburgh today with a heat index around 103. So other than going out for breakfast this morning and a quick trip to Lowe's, I've stayed inside and enjoyed the AC. Quite certain the plan for tomorrow is the same.
Pittsburgh, PA
Okay, it's a little after 2:30 here in SunnyCal, and we have busted the Century mark. First time in weeks. So I know how the rest of you east of the Rockies feel right now. Jeff's lemonade sounds REALLY good, right about now. Normally we get a very dry heat here in the Valley, but it feels a little humid in the garage, even with the fan on. However, the more I work on the yard at Deer Creek, the more convinced I am that Code 83 rail and 5-pound brass locomotives were just NOT made for each other! At least not on WS foam roadbed. So I think I have two choices--relay the yard with Code 100, which I do NOT want to do, or remove the WS and substitute sheet cork (which out here in this climate just gets brittle and falls apart after about a year). But the WS and the lighter rail is just too 'spongy' for my big locos (works fine with my little ones). No problems on the main, which is Code 100 AND WS foam roadbed, but the yard just turns into a roller coaster with the big ones traveling up and down the ladder. Luckily the track is laid down with Elmer's, which pulls up pretty easily, so I think I'll just do the Lift and Slide bit--lift the track, slide the WS out from under and go to Bruce's for some sheet cork (and replace it within two years, sigh!
OR: I could lay the yard directly onto the pink Corning foam subroadbed. Now there's a thought. I can ease down the yard lead by 1/4" or however much the distance is. RATS! Any ideas?
Gee, now I know what I missed about the hobby while I was sick---all the FRUSTRATION!!!
Rob: Believe it or not, I DO have some smaller power, LOL! In fact quite a bit of it. 2-8-0's, a couple of 4-6-0's, a Pacific or two and some Mikados. Fairly heavy on 4-8-2's, some 2-10-2's, and then it's Articulated Time. But the little lokies get a lot of work on the layout, too. In fact, I just saw a couple of Rio Grande C-48 2-8-0's at Caboose Hobbies for an absolute BARGAIN. I've got to stop pulling up their website!
