Good Afternoon,
just dropping by for some coffee and a slice of that apple pie Flo is hiding behind the counter...
Just watched my favorite TV show "Railroad Romances". Today´s feature was on the restoration of ol´ Santa Fe 3751 - boy, what an excellent job they did. Driving force behind the restoration is Robert Karl Kittel, supported by Wolfgang Fengler. Incidentally, Kittel is the name of the former Chief Engineer of Esslingen Locomotive Works, who was responsible for developing beautiful steamers like this one:
No package yet, but I expect it to arrive tomorrow!
TTFN
Mornin' everyone!
Zoe, I'll have a short stack of Blueberry pancakes, pure maple syrup, and a cup (or 3) of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR Mug. Please and Thank You! I'll go keep Barry company at the window booth.
Barry, What the heck is THAT thingy you were driving this morning...??? You looked a bit silly backing into the parking spot, you know! Now the fishing car, I remember. The ads for THAT said THAT all cars would soon be made to drive across lakes and ponds, enabling shorter trips for everyone. Wonder what ever happened to the cars THAT were able to fly as well???
Looks to be a fine day here in the Finger Lakes! Sunny and 73°F outside right at the moment. They say it will hit 80°F later today. Oh a Happy Midsummer's Day to all of you! I use the ancient calendar... THAT puts the Solstice at the mid point of Summer rather than the beginning (As in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights Dream). The ancients also started each day at sundown.... Much better system, I think!
Johnboy, thanks! I appreciate being mentioned in the same breath as the others you listed.... There are so many excellent modelers here at the forum I have learned much from.
Took my blood sugar first thing this morning after i got up. Twas 119....., lowest it has been in the morning in years. Started the new medication last night... Hmmmm? The Nurse thinks that my morning sugar has been high because at some point during the night, my sugar gets low enough to have the liver start producing more glucose. Unfortunately the liver doesn't get the signal to stop making glucose...... The second medicine is helpful to shut the liver production of glucose off. They now believe that type 2 diabetes is at least partially a liver problem.....
Best get moving and get a bunch of odds and ends done. might actually spend some time in the train room today (ie: I have to do my laundry....)

We'll get there sooner or later!
Good Morning all! It looks to be a hot start to Summer here in the land of the Senecas. Even though it's my day off, I have to help with a group of about 20 seniors visiting the museum today. I admit I've been a painting machine lately, but it'll slow down eventually. Sooner or later, I'll find myself back on the layout running trains and looking to improve the scenery. I think the most productive year for painting was a few years ago when I completed 28 paintings. My back won't allow me to sit that long anymore so if I can get 10 or so, I'm happy. Ken, when I do sell, it's usually for $250.00 a painting. I've been told by fellow artists that I should sell for more, but I want people to actually buy my art. I've seen many artists cart their stuff from show to show with nothing to show for it. Back in high school, I'd barter with the local old timers for their RR lanterns, brass locks and keys etc. It worked out well for me. Probably the best trade was a painting of 2 B&O locomotives for an 1875 brass lock from the Atlantic and Great Western RR! You can see that lock in our Erie RR display at the museum. Many of my best artifacts are on temporary exhibit there. Well, I gotta go, so just a quick cup of high test for me,Flo.

Good morning all,Flo can I have some grits and sausage links with an extra strong cup of coffee. You know the stuff thats been on the burner when Galaxy got up at 2:30am this morning. Oooh yea that hits the spot. BOING, awake now ! Not much going on at w**k today. Excavator moving dirt around , sending out selections to venders. If you want to check out the project I am working on try this www.madisonmews.com they just dropped the price on some of the units $40k in order to encourage some sales. Believe it or not two years ago these were going for $1million +.
Stan - WOW do you ever sleep ? How can you paint so fast ?
Rob - I agree with your 1,2,3. The Goverenmentaround here is spending so much money and so fast and hiring so many people around the DC area that we actually have a housing shortage! And the worst of it is I have some friends that cut the Government off because they have not paid there bill in six months, they are spending it faster than China can lend it, hope you all like the color red because at this rate we will be a province of China soon !
Jeff - I am shocked , would never have suspected that you were in Va. What part of this state were you in ? You have the weather right. Most years we have three seasons Winter straight to summer then a month of fall
Johnboy - Jacuzzi ! Oh boy I belt that felt good
Cuda - Funny about rock Hope you dont have to dip into the savings.
Galaxy - Geez you are starting to worry me ! 2:13am ! Congrats on 3000th post. Does MRR give out gold watches or something for attaining this high and note worthy achievment !
Ulrich - Boy do you have that right "iNsane scale" ! I cannot even see that small any more ! I would go insane squinting and trying to get those tiny little wheels on the track
Blowout - That is one freaky picture ! Ewwwww.Where do you find these ? Probably a state secret and you would have to kill us if you told us right ?
LSWrr Galaxy, where in NY are you looking? I have a train friend that works for a group of mortgage underwriter companies and he might be able to look up a particular zip code and give insight on properties that will be available soon, but not announced.

So can our agent in almost all cases. She also has access to listings "for agents only" that never make it to the MLS general listing. I also get a listing each morning in email of new to the market properties, those existing listings who have adjusted {downward} their price, etc.
The other problem we have is that we are looking for a one story Ranch or cape house that we can live on one floor living if need be. There are plenty of 2 story houses in our range, but they all have the BRs. upstairs. Ranches are more expensive and capes are iffy. My MIL had a stroke 15 yrs ago and they live in a multi-level house and had to have 2 stiar chair lifts installed for her to have access to most of the house. My mother had MS, and was wheelchair bound for half her life in a one level Ranch house. BIG difference. I have lived one floor living for aobut he last 16 years, as have My Other Half {MOH}, 11 of those years together in the trailer. WE want to be able to keep the house til "death us do part", so that means at least a BR and bath and area for at least a stackable laundry on the first floor. I already get around wiht the help of a cane the majority of the time.

Looking at rain and thunderstorms today so I don’t know what will happen around here. I did get the blades sharpened on the tractor and Mom’s yard mowed. I told Brenda, if we have that house much longer, I’m gonna sell the tractor and throw in the house. Once again someone has shown up asking to buy the thing.
Once again I’m expressing my condolences to family or friends. Ulrich, you have mine for your friend. This has not been a good year in terms of losses of loved ones so far.
Ray- Oh you forgot the one two pictures later of you playing catch the passenger . Glad to hear the Doc’s, well, Nurse’s appoint went good. specially glad your down a few. Hey, 60% is better than 0%.
Chris- Sorry about the TV show thing. Actually, in my experiences with our 4 footed buddies, ole Rerun wasn’t too terribly upset about you choking (yet), as much as hopeful something good would be launched his way.
Ah Nscale, yes the advantages are numerous and I too had seriously thought about “downsizing” if you will. That would allow most of what I want to be included in this too small world for my world. However two main things keep me from it, 1. I’m cheap (read monetarily, less than wealthy) so I would have to replace everything but the power pack. And 2. The size that gets me thinking about it, is also the nail in the coffin for me not switching. I like HO, for me it’s the perfect size. Small enough to fit, for the most part, yet large enough for me to see. For now anyway.
Lee- I live in a fairly new construction area of a subdivision that is still largely new construction. If that makes sense. Surrounding land trusts and red tape you know. Anyway, two houses in my neighborhood have gone up for sale in just the last couple weeks.
OK Barry- That last picture is just plain weird. He’s riding the vehicle backwards. (shakes head)
I gotta go. Starting to cloud upand the radar shows the rain just coming on Springfield, so should be here any minute. Luckily, it looks as if the heavy stuff may go to our SE.
Ya’ll have a Great Day!!!

LSWrr Galaxy, I heard on the news that 33% of all mortgages are in foreclosure, I would think anyone would be willing to come down a little. Two more houses on my street just went on the market, I’m anxious to see what they get for them. Good luck with your negotiations. $7,000 for new furnace, $1,000 for hot water tank, $10,000 for a new roof, and $5,000 for new carpet= $23,000 price reduction in my book. Maybe they would meet you halfway?

We are hoping for somehting like that. the house is about $25K over our max budget. SO we are hoping those things are gonna help, not hinder our search. If you read my answer to KEN you will see that our area is relative unscathed by the housing bust. People are more likely renting out a house they can't sell if they have to move to another local, and property here has remained steady. It is the fact that we are at the lower end of the bargaining range that hurts us. We CANNOT go higher as some people do just to get ahouse. WE don't wnat to be house poor or choose between mortgage payments or food like some of our friends do now because they "over spent" their reality budgets.
We also are not wiling to "settle" for a house in the questionable neighborhoods. They say buy the worst house in the best neighborhood and that is what we are trying to do. Buying the best house in the worst neighborhood is NOT our idea of a home for the rest of our lives. WE like the area we live in and just missed out on a house that fit us well. THat is how we got our buyer's agent...she was the listing agent on the house and we wanted to know if the deal was a done deal or still up to all the ducks falling in line. SHe said it was a done deal, but would act as our buyers agent to find another property.
In our area where we would like to stay the houses are about half again as much or double what our budget is for a decent house. The slummy houses that are in our range are in bad shape and we don't wnat a money pit.
cudaken Galaxy While this is totally none of my business but what is your budget? I bet your agent is there head by now. I must have been lucky when I bought my current house. When my builder backed out of the deal him and I had struck. (He had never built VA before) I looked at this house first, then drove over and looked at a second house, while there I told Mary (my agent) to make a offer on this one. It was $60,000.00 under my budget and had the in ground pool. But then again, I was not looking for a train room at the time. If I had been, I would have passed the places up.

Our budget is at the lower end of the spectrum here. There were several more options in our range during the winter, including one that kicked it all off, but was sold by the time our budget was established. Now that Spring/Sumer is here it is considered PRIME Real estate TIme {as people generally don't like to move in winter}, so houses have gone up $10k-$15k which really puts a lot out of our range now. There is no way to stretch our budget that extra amount. WE don't have the kind of money you are used to. {your store is probably down for the summer as people have other things to do besides buy mattresses this time of year- I DO hope things pick up for you.} This area has remained steady through the economic downturn, so there are really no "bargains" out there unless you buy decrepit properties that need rehabing and know how to rehab them and can do most of the work yourself. We are now at the botttom of hte local market, and there are fewer foreclosures as properties have held steadfast here than in other areas. We could only WISH to find a property that is $60k less than our budget! Because the area has reamined steadfast here is the reason that foreclosures are not bargains here as any that are bank owned the banks want the fair market price or just below it, rather than dump them to get them off their books.
I told our agent that we could be an easy find, or a tough sell. Anything that we have looked at that has had problems, she has agreed with us on the condition of the property {such as H2O in the basement, cracked and crumbling foundations, etc.}. The distressed properties have those kind of issues and are NOT just a "paint can away from updating". SHe knows it may be tough, but enjoys working with us. You can put lipstick on a pig, buit it is still a pig. SHe also knows it is not our fault that the prices have risen for spring/summer. Many houses have come down in price or been relisted with new RE agents, but are ones we have discarded.
The two we are looking at tonight are relatively out of our budget, but maybe we get lucky. One asks for any and all offers as owner has moved due to job transfer. Both are on relatively the same sized city lots that other houses have been on, but they are out in the country so to speak near where we live now. Properties much larger than a city lot are very much high on taxes just do to acreage.
Train room is not the issue, but a dry basement with no foundation cracks and is ripe for the finishing to build one in is high on our list! BUT the foundation must be intact and not have standing water in it regardless of whether we build layouts or not! The ones we have looked at that have dry basements are called "finished", though paneling and stapled up 1 foot ceiling tiles and throwing down a rug is a cheap way to "finish a basement" We think. For that they want extra.
We are looking to buy a property that is NOT going to be a "money pit". One property has an older furnace and h20 heater and the roof is 20 yrs old now. Both will need to be replaced relatively soon. That could be our bargaining chip. Also the "finished basement" is a relative term as they did put down a wooden floor and put up paneling they painted white. They tore up the carpet on the wood subfloor leaving exposed 4x8s nailed down to {assumeably incorrect and not pressure treated like should be} 2x2's. They think htey have something with an "included window A/c" but we have newer window A/cs that are energy savers. SO no big deal.
Until we find something, our agent is willing to work with us thus far.

THIS is my 3,000th post!! {of course by the time some of you read it it will be beyond that!}
who'd a thunk I'd have that much to say about model trains and nothing much here in the diner that anyone would want to read.
Of course there were times I posted something and then stood corrected, and times I had to offer a correction to another post. and times I just rambled here in the diner that nobody bothered to read.
Not near Jeffrey W's post count, but getting up there.
Actually somehow I wound up wiht a duplicate post that I had to blank out that put me up to the edge and over to the 3,000 mark. Dunno how that happened but I can sure say the forum has been slow lately, so I'm not surprised it took it twice. I can post then copy what I wrote and then it will post if I am lucky. AOL has been slow lately, Dunno if our computer has caught something or whether it just is what it is. THe forum seems to be the only slow site. SO I blame it on the forum.
WEll you guys all have a Great Day!

Summer has now officially started!
Well, the sun´s out, though it is not really warm outside. Temperatures will hardly top 18°C today. A low pressure zone over the British Isles will take care of summer in the next days, meaning lots of to come.
Chloe, just coffee, please.
Mail box update:
The package is now at Soltau, which is only 25 miles away from my place. If the customs people put it back into the mailing process after my call yesterday, it should arrive today or tomorrow latest! That´d be great, as Petra and I will most likely go to see my parents on Thursday for their 60th wedding anniversary. I am not sure whether my mother will be able to celebrate this, but at least we want to spend an hour or so with them.
Ken - chances are pretty good that either Karl or Fritz is a model railroader himself. Model railroading is much more an accepted hobby here in Germany than in the US. Latest figures show, that we have about 6 million folks being a member in a model railroading club of some sort - that´s roughly 8 % of our population. Fritz will most likely say "Hey, look Karl, what kind of cool scenic materials they have in the US!"
On the work front, Ken, I am hoping that business will pick up again.
Galaxy - still keeping my fingers crossed for your house hunt!
Stan - you must be w*riking 24/7 on those paintings! I am amazed how fast you are! And your paintings are so atmospheric - I can really hear the sound of a working steamer when looking at them.
Garry - Dieter´s death came totally unexpected. He was a tall, lean man, who exercised a lot, did not smoke or drink. He is leaving two sons and 4 grandchildren behind.
Barry - those GMD 1´s were ugly beasts, weren´t they? So ugly one could call them almost pretty
Chris - have you joined the MRAA? That´s the Model Railroaders Anonymous of America?
My name is Ulrich, and I am an iNsane scale modeler.
Y´ all have a good one!
Btw - have not seen Jerry around for some time!
GOOD MORNING!! GOOD MORNING!
HA! I beat wetidlerjr again!
{And Ulrich too...though I realize he has his hands full at the moment}
What am I doing up so early? well I slept a lot with medications yesterday with a migraine so I am up now.
Another day closer to my paycheck.
Evening Folks
Flo, you know what I want!
Work Front Still firmly in control of Last Places. Somethings got to give, I either have to find a new job or part time job. Have a Disconnect on the Cable and the Electric plus I have got to come up with a $1,000.00 house payment by next week. While I like the job, and I am still happy to have it I don't for see it getting better at this point. I have not touched the savings yet, but I see it coming.
Stan Unless you all ready had the painting traced out, I am shocked by how fast you paint! Like I could afford it, but what would you charge to do a painting?
Train Front I did break out the old Athearn Super Weight Warbonnet F-7 A last night. I did have the harness wired up, but not the LED for the lights.
Tested the motor while it was in the chassis. Found a DC plug for a RTR Athearn in the box. With the engine on a test track I did the amp test. though the rails and it only pulled 0.40 amps when I lifted it up some off the rails. Then I stalled it on the rails it only drew 0.98 amps. Jeffery, Simon and others! I have never tested the motor in a chassis with pulling power to the trucks before, this is a good reading I hope!
The Athearn BB Super Weight Warbonnet F7 A was my first Athearn engine ever, up to that point all i had was Life Like Pancake engines! It great to see the old friend back on the rails!
Ulrich Like the rest of he dinner, I am sorry to hear about your friend.
As far as the package. I did scrape off most of the prices tags, think I left them on your Bag's Of Rocks! I can hear it now if they open the box! "Karl look at this, some dumb American sent a bag of rocks as a gift! Don't the silly Americans know we have rocks here in Germany?" Yea Fritz, hard to believe he spent $44.00 for postage and sent rocks! Wait Karl, he is a model railroader, you know they are all Dumkoft's playing with toy trains".
I should have asked them this time around at the post offices why they did not ask what the declared value was. Sorry I messed up on this end Ulrich.
See you all later!
Ken

Hi Gang,
Just thought I would stop in before I head to the Jacuzzi. Just finished mowing the lawn as it is supposed to rain again tonight and the next couple of days.
Who is working tonight ?, I don't see the twins. Whoever is hiding in the kitchen, I'll have a BLT on brown with an RC Cola to float.
STAN, your art work really blows me away. That is a wonderful talent you have, I am envious.
ULRICH, Prayers are still out going for your Mom and Dad and also you and Petra. Hope Christmas in June arrives soon.
JEFF, I hope that assessment goes quick for you and you get that new brace in place to take some pressure off the rest of that ankle. I love that creativeness you have with those locos. I only would like to see the L&A invest in a washer. STAY COOL GUY >>>>>>>>>>>
JR, How is the season going?? are you getting a few Ws along the way?
Cape Jim, Email me with what you know about Sprinfield, Mo.
RAY, Yes, you are indeed a rivet counter. You and Grampy, Jerel and Crandell should form your own union. I only imagine being able to turn out work like you fellas do. I stand in Awe.
Well my good news on the RR. scene today is, >>> after a year and 3/4s, Rapido has finally come through with a Steam Genny for the WP--CZ. I have had it ordered since they were first announced and I believe they built one for every other road first. But I am very glad to have it, and it was worth the wait.
The wand to remove the roof hatch is a great idea. I think they stole that from some of the hopper loads that we make.
If any of you can inform me how those little switches for the light and boiler work let me know before I have to call Rapido. I see the on and off positions but cannot figure out their movement as they don't seem to want to move. They also look similar to those by-passes you install in a DCC loco to get it to run better on DC. But it does not say anywhere in the manual or diagram what to do there.
Well I need to go have a soak, and then some ZZZZzzzzssss, as it is back to work in the morning.
You all stay happy now, and sleep well, even you insomniacs, That means you, Bill T., Rob C., Galaxy, and Ulrich.

Good evening fellas! Just a quick note before calling it a night. Thanks for all of the great comments on the K4 painting. I've already started the next, and I'm pretty happy with the results so far:
This is B&O P6 pacific 5243 crossing over the Erie mainline eastbound at Carrollton NY with the varnish heading to Buffalo from Pittsburgh in 1952. I've always loved the P6 locos, and I've done more paintings of these than any other locomotive. Thew only locomotive I love more would be the B&O Q4 mikes. Here's a look at my brass Q4's on display with some prototype stuff:
Ok, time to wrap it up! See ya all tomorrow!

Well, good evening ...
A nice busy day was had by me..all kinds of stuff to do..none of which involved traintime.... Think I'll just go into the room and mope for a bit before going off to bed....
Tomorrow we haave enough heat supposedly coming that I'll be indoors running the A/C and enjoying some time in the room somewhat...provided no list thing shows up....

Evenin' folks!
Flo, just a decaf for the moment.
Glad THAT several of you enjoyed the Museum Photos. I was a perfect day for being outdoors and riding on the train!
Curt, the PC Crummy is "Transfer Caboose". They don't have cupolas or bay windows. Tranfer Cabeese were usually used in short runs, local freights, transfers of cars between roads, etc. The FGLK here in the Finger lakes still has 2 or 3 they use for MOW, and as shoving platforms.
The Erie one was made in the Dunsmore, PA shops in May of 1946 and weighs in at 48,900lbs. The PC one was made in East Rochester at the Despatch Car Shops in 1969. More info on her here: http://rgvrrm.org/about/railroad/pc18526/index.htm
Galaxy, hope your house hunting tomorrow turns out well and hope one of them will be the house of your dreams!
Had a good appointment today with the Nurse Practitioner this afternoon. Blood pressure was great (136/66) for me anyway, weight was down a few pounds... On the other hand, I am only hitting goals with the blood sugar 60% of the time and it is high the other 40%... So i will be doubling the Metformin and I am starting another med along with it. We shall see what we shall see......
Have a good evening all!
Going to look at two ho0uses tomorrow. Here's to hoping they will take a cut on selling price!
One at least I have seen at open house yesterday is not worth what they are asking. drop it by $10-$15K and you're talking.MAybe. Still need to come down a bit for us, but it needs some work. The previous owners lived there 15 years and furnace NOT new to them so much older and roof is 20 yrs old. H2O heater is older too. They pulled up carpeting that leaves plywood subfloor exposed. but dry basemnt and not cracking.
Second house wants any and all offers to entertain. Maybe we get them down maybe not.
Here's to hoping...all of you please keep your fingers crossed tromorrow evenign when we go looking!!!
Thanks
Ray ... Thanks for sharing the museum shots.
Barry ... I don't know what to say about you Canadians. Here in the States, we do not drive vehicles like that one.
JR... Glad you could stop in. Wondering where you were.
Stan ... That K4 painting is outstanding!
Ulrich ... I'm sorry to learn about the loss of your friend. That sounded like it was totally unexpected.
Chris ... I like the depot photo.
I'm enjoying having grandkids here. The 20-month old is rather active!
Not much layout work, but I did add details to an SD7. This is the 4th SD7 or SD9, I have detailed for CB&Q practice. I have 2 more to go. Altogether, there are 3 SD7's and 3 SD9's in my locomotive roster..
I have to have them because the old Burlington used them extensively in the 1950's and 1960's. They would haul anything from coal trains to passenger trains. They were regular power on the Deadwood Branch in South Dakota. They would MU with F units or GP 7's and 9's. Most had steam generators and most had dual controls to operate with either short hood or long hood as forward end..
Good Evening All,
Back from Mosport and doing chores and laundry before we head out for Brakie territory (Mid Ohio). With luck I'll get a few minutes in the basement with the layout.
Sorry to hear about your friend Ulrich and hope you get your package from Ken with no further delay.
I'll catch you all later. J.R.
Evening All,
Still hot as hades here. I believe it is still in the 90's.
I have a link to a PRR modeler site that you can make PRR signs (keystone and rectangular) in red and gold. You can type in any name you want. I made up scaled down signs for my layout last night. I plan on gluing (white glue) them to a plastic sign and then cut them out and glue the styrene to the appropriate building. If anyone is interested in the link please send me a PM. I imported the sign to word perfect, shrunk it down to 40% and printed it.
Ulrich- I am sorry about your friend and his family is in my prayers.
Chris- My name is Curt and I am also a HO modeler....
Ray- Nice seeing your picture. Is that PC caboose normal not to have a cupola?
Jeff- I like your B&W photos, to me they imply age. I agree it is exciting to get MRR boxes in the mail.
NS3010- You have a plus plus. You get to go to college and there is a railfaning location nearby.
Everybody have a good night.

Hey guys.
Replaced my back bumper on my Jeep. (You guys remember THAT adventure) Took all dang blamed day because the bumper was sprung out.
Well (Need a tanker for the extra) I got a letter from the NRA today (Oh yeah, I am a member of the NRA), they are having a NRA day on the 25th at a shooting range south of me. Said to bring family and friends. May call a few of my riding friends and see if they want to go down there too.
If you can read this... thank a teacher. If you are reading this in english... thank a veteran
When in doubt. grab a hammer.
If it moves and isn't supposed to, get a hammer
If it doesn't move and is supposed to, get a hammer
If it's broken, get a hammer
If it can't be fixed with a hammer... DUCK TAPE!
So far I've changed out the couplers on four of my locos. The GP7, SGP9, GP38-2J and a GP30.
