Ray: If I don't get told that I'll be going in to get my ICD put in then I might be able to show up for that--it is always a good show that they put in there!Big Smile That appointment is on November the 18th as well--Whistling

As for the water stuff--Woodstock ON water is kind of funny--being that it is on a limestone bed you would think that we would not have sulfer but there is a pocket of sulferous water from a well near where my sister lives---it is in Sutherland Park just off Huron St. I can still smell that water now even in my memory--I used to go by there on the way to school--right by the pumphouse--and then skitter up the hill to get away from that smell--Tongue TiedHuh?Whistling

Self imposed off limit zones. Talking about the A/C and Breaker Box area. I have decided there is no reason for them. Why impose theses limits for in case I have a problem. I have not done a thing to the A/C for 12 years that involving removing it. When I build the bench by the breaker box and A/C I will have it set up where that section can be removed to do the needed work.

Make it as accessible as you can. Murphy will be waiting for his moment to strike.

Mourning Folks

Flo, more Diet Dew, just cannot get woke up today.

Ulrich you input is all wise welcome, even if we run trains different. Far as wanting a spaghetti bowl, that is the last thing I want. I understand why you and others might think that with me wanting 4 main lines. In fact the plan by Armstrong that I like he rated low for switching. As far as trying to stick in scenery, not what I am looking to do either.

I guess the one thing I have not posted about is the terrain I want the layout sat in. I love Mountains, I see in my mind the engines snaking around turns going up and down grades. Mountains would be a large part of my back ground as well.I am sure you have seen my pictures in WPF, but here put here is a refresher of the look I like. Next patch will be better, I have learned from the mistakes I made with theses. They will all so all be lift off made from foam.

If you have seen Arthill, Twhite and Crandell's pictures, that is what I am shooting for in a smaller scale to suit my room.

One of the reasons I want a around the room layout is because I want the trains run to be more prototypical. Do not want to see the train go in front of a building, then around the back of it.

I hope this has cleared things up a little for yourself, Morgan and others that maybe paying attention to my ill directed attempt to build the perfect Cuda Ken Layout.

Vincent Can you post a picture of the Hams car?

Todd I did go to the Pearl Beer Website, we are not getting any in IL!

See you all later.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, a bowl of hot oatmeal w/ brown sugar, and a cup of dark roast in a FGLK mug, please and Thank You!

Barry!  Good to see you.  (whispers) I see Vinnie has been giving you a hard time.....  Huh?  No! No! Vinnie, I said, "It's good Vinnie is hard on crime!"  Hey Barry, are you planning on heading up to the Toronto Train Show Nov. 20?  I'll be there for the Niagara Frontier, NMRA Meeting THAT day.  After the Well (deep subject) in Oakfield which went down through 2 abandoned Mine Shafts (Gypsum) to finally reach water....  Ah very nice Sulfur Water....  Very smelly, icky, Sulfur Water....  I am very glad to be on the Geneva City Water Supply here!  The guy THAT drilled the well in Oakfield came within 1" of losing the bore drill head when he did the well.  THAT was the second of the two shafts he ended up going through.  The water in THAT part of NY is for the most part just awful.....  In Elba where I taught, the water was acid and would go through a water heater in about a year and a half.  Yep I like the Geneva Water.  Fresh, pure, Seneca Lake water with just a bit of agricultural run off and the slightest hint of Ontario County Landfill Leachate in it.  Yum!

Robby.........  NICE!

Todd, Steinbeck comes to mind.........Smile, Wink & Grin

Galaxy, not long after I bought it (Brand Spankin' New!) I had a similar problem with my 2002 Dodge Dakota.  It would be running along just fine, and then start to skip and buck.  Used to give me a real scare when I was 60 or so miles away from home pulling a 2 ton equipment trailer with it.  I would get home, call the dealer, and on the way there it would suddenly start running fine again....  They would plug into the computer and not be able to find anything wrong with it.  This went on for a year and a half before i was driving right by the place and it started up.  Drove in, left it running, and went and growled at the service guys....  They came out shut it off and......  Bad Oxygen Sensor on one cylinder!  Finally, after a year and a half, they put a new sensor in it and it has run well ever since.  I won't go into all the other problems I have had with it..........  My guess would be you have the same problem with the Kia.  But they have to isolate and find it first.

Currently 41°F here in the Finger Lakes under cloudy skies (actually it is sprinkling outside).  Guess I will get some w*rk done for the Modelers Corner on Sunday.  Have my Doctors Appt. early this afternoon, then need to do some shopping.  After THAT, the day should be mine to use any way I want.  (I hope!)

Later!

Good morning. It's 46 and mostly cloudy. The high will be 74 and it will remain mostly cloudy.

Looks as if our low temps are gonna be in the 50's the next few days. That's a welcome change from the 30's. I got the feeder wires under the layout all connected last night. The multi-meter indicates that all the connections are correct and there are no shorts. The next step will be to connect the buss wires with the control panel.

Jeff- Feller in Leesville has some observation cars for sale on the (not so) Evil Bay. Know him? No concerns or questions, just curious if you did. Don’t know if I’ll bid enough to get one. I have received many “you lose” notices to date. Right now I’m leaning towards the real cheap. There are plenty of heavyweight rear observation cars out there and I can continue without one for quite some time.

Nope. Don't know him. I have no need for observation cars anyway. I already have several rear observation cars.

Robby P.

Lee........I didn't even think of that.  I will have to see what I can do Thumbs Up.

{in regards to taking/selling some railfan shots}

Robby! I suggested a few days ago you take some "8x10 glossies" {photos} of your real train shots so you can show/sell the weathered cars as looking exactly like what you saw in real life. It will help greatly if you can get a model  car that matches exactly the photo of the real car, but we are dreaming here. Then again, maybe not. Keep that in mind for the future.

If you have a good printer that will take photographic glossy paper and print well on them with good ink cartridges you should have some swell pics that you can show off/sell if mounted on a piece of corrugated cardboard and shrink wrapped {or wrapped with saran wrap lightly tightly}.

Photo graphic paper should be available at Staples, Office max, even Wallyworld.

Good Morning! Coffee please. The dog got me up at 4:30 to pot-ay. She has returned to a snoring slumber and I have not. I have decided to go to Mom’s house and do some grouting etc then return for the truck at 10:30 then do some things around the house til w**k again at 5. Probably bring the table saw home I intended to some other day.

I kinda lean towards Ulrich’s view on track plans. Yet I want plenty to do, but I also want something to look at as well. Scenery that is. Somewhere in between but closer to Ulrich than Armstrong.

Last night after I left I……..looked into the train room. Can’t wait to get back in there. The thing looks lonely.

Good Morning,

I really need to check in on the weekends, I’m always 5-7 pages behind.

Fireman216, I hope the Mrs. is feeling better.

We had 2” of snow Saturday; it came out of the sky in clumps and in less than 3 hours after it fell it melted away.  This morning we had a heavy frost, winter is coming soon…

Larry, nice to see you in the diner, I heard I missed you and the guys at the Berea show; I had a lost girlfriend I had to find, LOL.

Robby, you should sell some of your rail fan pictures at the train show.

Ken, on the curves I agree.  This layout I designed it to have some massive curves (36, 38.5, and 41) on the 3 track mainline since I had the real-estate to play with, but it dominated the rest of the layout plan.  I think most locomotives can run on 22” to 24” radius curves.

Speaking of layouts: I got a bunch of work done this weekend on the east end of the layout.  I’m still doing touch-ups here and there before I take pictures.  The lumber yard is in and fully stocked with lumber, stacks of bricks, drainage tiles, cinder blocks, and various building supplies. I still need to finish up the stray foliage and install a trash/burn pile in the back to finish it off.  The team track/yard office is waiting on the little details to finish it off.  Basically it looks too “clean” without any stray piles of junk and stuff you normally find.  The sugar beet refinery has the basic building in place and I’m working off layout on the beet pile sluice pit I’m scratch building. I kit bashed a truck scale and have that installed with a small scale house.  The seed-feed-farm supply store is in and almost finished.  All of this is in a 4’ x 14’ area on the east end of the layout.  The area is divided into quarters by tracks and a gravel road.  Total the area can hold up to (a total of) twelve 40’ cars on the four spurs.  It will make an interesting switching situation for the local freight crew.

>Pops one eye open, looks around, yawns<

Good Morning everyone in AZ!!!

WEll, dunno, maybe today we go to Elmira {Horseheads} to Lantz's hobby shop AKA wholesaletrains.com to look for a train station for out train nut friend. I can pick up some track bits too and a set of new trucks for my newly aquired {old used} B&O Caboose.

I say maybe because th KIA will have to go back to the dealer {again}, It seems after awhile on the hiway at hiway speeds with cruise control going, when we get off at the lower speeds it BUCKS quite hard or hesitates when the gas is stepped on at the lower speeds. Dunno if its a tranny problem, a fuel filter/pump issue, or a "sensor" problem as there are so many on todays vheicles. It did that on the way back from the Syracuse show as we got off 81 to drop off our train nut friend. WE were gonna stop at his house, but decided to get home while she was still running.

Have to call the service desk about it. Meant to yesterday. FOrgot.

We also have to go pick up our HEAP application for energy heating assistance for this winter. With the gas and electric rates going up {for us the same company}, it will certainly help to reduce our costs this winter. Was available on the 1st, but shows you how well we think about getting it fast and filling it out as it will take about  3 months for them to process and give us our award, which should be the same as last year. Right now the energy comapny OWES US about $250 of service. WE always remain paying them $100.00/month year round and with our HEAP Award, we usually don't owe tehm more than that. Balanced Biling is wonderfull.

So what are you guys up to today?

I may get top honors, If I do, eat up!

If not, please disregard the previous message.

**please disregard the previous messge!! I did NOT get top honors!

Good Morning,

we are up early, as Petra will be off to another go on her "freebie" teaching. She spends so much time in preparing the classes that I start to feel neglected Smile, Wink & Grin

Zoe, coffee in a D&RGW mug please, and a breakfast bagel to munch on.

Ken - John Armstrong is certainly one of the "big guys" in MRRing, but I don´t fully subscribe to all of his statements. The layouts of his era were loaded with track - not much unlike the often cited "spaghetti bowl". My personal guru is Lance Mindheim, who said "The more you know about railroad operation, the less track your layout requires". You know, I am more of a minimalist when it comes to designing layouts and I prefer to plan a layout with scenery in mind, rather than trying to put the scenery in the "open" spaces in between the track. I also prefer to operate trains in a close to prototypical manner, instead of watching trains just run, which tends to get boring after a little while. Even big layouts, like Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, had problems in catching the visitors´ attention, although they run a zillion of trains. They have added a lot of "action" items and gimmicks to their layout to overcome this. My personal view is that action is no substitute for operation.

Just a few views, nothing personal at all only food for thought! I am glad if I can assist you infinding your "ultimate" track plan.

Flo, just a Beer, wife made chili and I am stuffed.

Picked up a few books by John Armstrong today and they have opened my eyes. As I was skimming through the book this statement hit home. "But using too big of radius may result in a poorer plan if you are fitting a pike into a spaces that has been established by some higher authority (such as the rest of the family) as all that will ever be available. There will be too little straights track and general scheme may have been simplified to the point of being uninteresting just to get broad curves into a limited spaces. Insurances is prudent investment, but you can go broke by buying to much of it, broad curves are somewhat the same. It is from Mr Armstrong book The Classic Layout Designs.

I have all so been the one that championed the fact bigger engines can make it around smaller turns. So I am thinking no bigger than 32 inch and only on outer turns that will be highly visible. I do want to go no smaller than 24 on the two high speed mains. The two trunk lines can go down to 22.

Other book I got my Mt Armstrong is The Model Railroad Track Plan Book. It has several layouts for larger areas and couple have tickled my fancy. As soon as I figure out how to uses the scanner I will post some pictures

 See you all later.

                     Ken.

The original I posted hung between 34 and 26 radius anyway, and favored 32 and 30, so we can do that

Good evening. Nothing for me thanks. Just had some beef stew. Big SmileThumbs Up

Well, (deep subject for a shallow mind (snicker)  ( I’ve always wanted to say that ever since Ray started saying it. That’s the way I always heard/said it. Didn’t want him to think I was refering to him though. Ray is FAR from a shallow mind.)), no more flooring needs to be laid…., lain…..,put down. The flooring is done. No it’s not. I still need to finish grouting. The walls are painted in the laundry and bath. Next is trim, closet shelving, toilet reinstall, sink reinstall and…….I’m sure something else will show up. Always does.

Galaxy- I agree with Garry. No stupid questions. Stupid answers, but no stupid questions. At the risk of starting a rant, I find it annoying at the responses some give to questions they deem not worth answering. If they don’t want to answer why do they? Makes no sense. If you knew the answer you wouldn’t have asked. I didn’t go to the thread because I didn’t want to be tempted to respond to some of the responses. As Jeff has told me several times. Don’t let ‘em get to you and don’t feed ‘em. Still. I thought a forum was a place to ask questions. I guess there is a one time question limit in some peoples minds. They don’t seem to mid the endless end of hobby posts. Or the Kalmbach going out of business because the mag is thinner or late threads. Or….

Oh. Hi Vinnie. I’ll shut up now.Embarrassed

Johnboy- It seems a bigHappy B-Day is in order.

Ken- I have not read Mr Armstrongs book but, at the risk of raising the blood pressure of the few hardcore prototypicalists, (yup, that got a red squiggly line under it) hanging outside the diner, I found out that I agree by my own experience. I would rather have a car hang over the inside curve, than have very little straight. It makes for an un interesting layout and very difficult to scenic with buildings in MY opinion. If you have the space, sure. But sometimes we don’t have a space like Rod Stewart. Shoot, even he has limitations.

4.5 million miles? Why that’s just a short jaunt. I’VE driven 16 million miles in just the last two years alone. Not counting the time I was a famous race car dri….

Oh, Hi Vinnie. I best get a move on.

There’s some chocolate cake on the counter and some Vaniller ice cream in the freezer calling my name. Maybe I’ll indulge.

Evenin' folks!

Flo just a decaf for me tonight.  I'll go sit in the back and chat for a while.

Galaxy, good to hear the wife had no problems at the dentist.  Hope your migraine is gone in the morning.  Remember there are no stupid questions!  I've seen some stupid answers though......Whistling

Jeffrey, hope the wiring goes smoothly for you.

I have a six month check up at the Dr. tomorrow myself....  Sure hope I hear some good news there!

Got the lawn done for the last time this year!!! Thumbs Up  Mower is set away until next March When it comes out for Spring duty.....  I don't ever remember a year where I had to mow as often as I did this year.  I need to get the log splitter's oil changed and ready for winter as well.  I think it will be easiest to change the oil while it is still on the trailer, so THAT may be on the schedule for tomorrow after the Drs. Appt.  I also need to get the new NMRA sign and Info display done in the next couple of days.  Looks like I will be at an operating session in the Southern Tier all day on Friday, so I best plan out how I will get everything done for Sunday's Train Show in Batavia.

Got a little more done on the Stone crusher building today as well.  I think it will turn out well enough to be seen on the layout....Laugh

Well, another day gone by. Didn't do much. WEnt with my better half to the dentist, fine checkup and cleaning.

Tired with a mild migraine.

Then I asked another dumb question over on DCC forum.Bang Head

Stop over to my "what new product would you like to see?" thread here on the genreal forum and tell us what new product {no locos} you would like to see sold or invented for MRRing in three different topic categories. I don't know maybe that's a dumb question tooBang Head. I know everybody wants certain locos in their favorite livery, but this is for the "other stuff" in MRRing you would like to see.

Well {deep subject that actually holds water}, I suppose I should get ready for bed now.

Hey guys

Looks like I fell behind

Busy day today. Right after work I had to drive to destin for a dr. appointment, then to the tax collector's office to get papers to transfer the 90 for sale. Got it sold and now have 2,000 in my pocket.Big Smile

Went to a trainshow yesterday. Picked up a white SPFE 57' reefer, B&O (Chessie) waffle box, and an MKT PS hopper. all athearn. The MKT hopper is a bit of a project. someone glued the ends to the bottom but didn't make sure they were contacting the car body. tried to remove an end and it broke. A stirrup is also broke, but I might be able to the car fix it without buying anything.

Also snagged some detail parts. 2 smokey Valley GP9B handrail kits (he didn't have straight GP9 ones, and I think a GP9B one would give me extra stanchions), a pair of DA underframe bells, an AMB window kit for an athearn SD40-2, 2 sets of warren customs services coupler plates (one set broke when I tried to fit them on a unit) a pack of DW firecracker antennaes, and a few other pieces.

I'll be catching up in the back

Ken, check your "conversations"/PMs

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Don't have much going on. FINALLY we are finished with the Scarlet Letter in english. now tomorrow we have our wrap=up discussion, wednesday we have an inner-outer circle discussion, and then thursday we have a test. To top it off we have a paper due a week from today that was assigned midway through the book. Guess what I'm working on tomorrow?
Did I mention I hate this book?
Ok, done venting, now to improve my attitude and attack this paper head-on tomorrow.

I've got the green (outside rail) buss wire strung and hung and some of the outer rail feed wires are already connected to it. Now I'll get some rest and get my nerves back together. After that I'll get the white (inside rail) buss wire strung.

Afternoon all.

When I got home today, I had an email from Atlas (THAT was fast!). They asked for my address, so they're going to send me a replacement part. I'm happy now! Cool

Welcome to the Diner, Krump!

It's ok, Todd, the list of other stuff will (hopefully) end. Eventually.

Well, I better get back to homework. I'll be in the corner booth if anyone would be kind enough to come over and talk to distract me.

JEFF,  I like and approve of the changes you are making. It will be so much easier for you to work on the layout.  I have had second thoughts about the size of my layout and at my age and with other interests if I have enough time for that project. But seeing that all the benchwork is done and some of the landforms I think I will just continue on with it. I do believe that I should quit work completely and put more time on it. I have just  turned 70 a couple of days ago and have retired four times already, so maybe I should do it for keeps this time. If I stay working I have promised myself it will only be for two more years. That's the limit, but I will continue to assess that time frame. I have lost about a year on it after the mess we got into having the south side of our home Mud Jacked and having the floor blown out. But others have had similar with fires and floods etc.

Johnboy: When I built my previous layout I had thought that it would be my last for a long while. But life got in the way. My arthritis and my bone problems have gotten so bad that it was becoming harder and harder to get under the layout to get to an access hole. Something had to be done. I finally got the middle section cut out so I have a walk in area. That was the hard part. I'm working on the wiring now. In fact I've started on hanging the first of the buss wires. In the past I used hooks to support the wires. This time I'm using RG-6 coaxial clamps. The wire will be held up and will be able to move around somewhat but it won't be able to come out of the clamp. I was having that problem with the hooks.

Whistling

Good Afternoon Gang,

Well I find myself back in Spokane visiting my Son for a week.  The first 470 miles were just like summer, the next 500 it was raining all the way.  Today it is about 36 F and drizzling actually feels like there could be some snow up there.

I am late for lunch, but still need some vitals.  Chloe if you have  a minute,  I would like to have a bowl of potatoe soup and a BLT. I'll chase that with an RC cola. Haven't had one of them in a very long time.

I plan on hitting Sunset junction (LHS) and a couple of other spots, mainly just looking as I really don't need anything right now, but will probably pick something up. Tomorrow night I plan on getting to a MMR club for a short visit. I'll keep you posted on that. Would love to get down into the Tri-Cities area and visit with Joel and Teressa at T-J Model trains. Both Jim at Sunset and Joel & Teressa are absolutely the finest people you can meet.

KEN,  I too learned some time ago that the last thing a person needs to get tangled up with is Norton or McAfee.   That is just asking for trouble and so difficult to get rid of all of their components.

JERRY,  I like your most recent pictures  of the I.S. and also that Monon unit. They were sure classy weren't they ?

DerJohn, Your scratch building is wonderful and hope to get my skills to come close to yours. Glad too hear you dodged the bullet with that last storm.

Ulrich, Glad the interview went well and hope you hear good news very soon. And also that the Car is ready to take you to work.

It has been awhile since Keith checked in. I wonder what he is up to.  Still no Fergie or Ed (OJ) either..

Congratulations to the boys with the new Driver's Licenses.  It was a very long time ago for me, but I still remember the feeling, and that is after 2.5 million miles with Greyhound and another 2 million with the Trucking, Ambulance, Tour Buses, and personal miles. Always remember to drive defensively, be ready to react as if the other guys are going to do the wrong thing.  Happy & Safe Trails..............

All the rest of you guys,  Always interested in whats going on with you and wish you all well with the various plans, awards and train shows that you have in the works.

We just had finished walking the dogs (3) and my wife has started making some homemade chicken soup while I've been writing this. Now she is giving me the (eye) as I think she wants to get out and about. So I'll sign off for now.

Health and Best Wishes to all.

Ken: Not really, no. Photoshop compresses the image smaller than what it is in RTS, so some stretching will still be required.

I may steal Madogs though and tweak some. You'll have to get to that pesky breaker box though too...

 LUNCH!!

Well I went to the LHS to get some older cars but they were gone.   I did get a couple of 1950 cars, and that should do it for me.  That will give me 26 total.    I probably won't start on them till tomorrow thou.
