Garry..............Thanks for the picture!!!  I really needed that shot.   By the way, I got your letter today.

Ray............I just now got the body off.  I will post some shots later this week.  Its not going to be a rust bucket, but more along the lines of a "used" engine.

Good Afternoon Folks,

a little later than usual, but I am just back from my second day of consulting the two guys who want to run that TV station. It feels good to be back in to my "old" job routine.

Zoe, a Beer, please, and something to munch on - how about crackers and cheese? Thank you.

Galaxy - 2000 posts? A long way to catch up with Jeff, who is only surpassed by Crandell. I am zeroing in on post # 3,000, which I will most likely achieve by the end of the year.

Ken - preparing track plans can become a hobby of its own Whistling. But beware of being caught by a bad case of analysis paralysis, which I tend to be. That´s why I don´t touch my track plan any more. I am still having difficulties putting your druthers into a basic concept for a layout. One of the issues is to keep those 4 mains which you´d like to have, separated from each other, without cramming too much track into the given space. Accessibility is a big issue, and if you incorporate too many duck-unders, fly-overs, lift-outs and poop-ups, you are going to hate this one day. A layout of the size you envision may easily take 10 years to complete and believe me, 10 years ago I did not have the problems crawling on my 4 feet that I have now.

Bob - Hamburg has changed a lot since the 1970´s. The re-unification of Germany brought back Hamburg´s "Hinterland", turning the city into a boom town. St. Pauli has lost lots of its old character by turning into a fashionable quarter with a demi-monde touch. I still find it to be Germany´s most attractive city!

I am still pondering about my benchwork issue. The problem I have is its irregular shape an the lack of professional woodworking tools to cope with any other angle than either 45 or 90 degrees. The benchwork needs to be lightweight, as I may have to be able to move the layout. What I have come up with is a mixture of L-girder and open grid benchwork. My idea is to use two 1x4s as a "spine" and set plywood "ribs"every 12", to which I fasten the plywood "baseboard". The whole contraption will be mounted on shelf brackets, attached to wall-mounted metal rails. Does that make sense?

A big Welcome to all the Diner´s new patrons!

Good morning. It's 54 and mostly cloudy. The high should be 73 and it will remain mostly cloudy.

Had to go to town this morning to get a new roll of solder. 60/40 rosin core .050". I usually use a lead free type but they didn't have it in stock. I had to pick up a few other things also so it was a fairly good errand run. I also grabbed a 50 count box of Christmas lights. This will be cut up and used for structure lighting. I figure that they're 2.4 volts each so 3 in series on 5 volts should be good.

Mornin' everyone!  A nod and a grin to those who are new or returning after an absence.....  Good to have you on board (again).

Zoe, I'll have the same as Barry was munching on to go along with my morning dark roast coffee in a FGLK mug.  I'll go over and occupy my "reserved seat" for a while.

Well (deep subject), Galaxy I see you have hit # 2000.....  Good, THAT means you must be enjoying the forum as much as we enjoy having you around! Smile, Wink & Grin

Robby, nice diseasally thingy you got there!  Bet she will be looking like she has done some w**k soon. Big Smile  I know you will post updates for us.

I have a long list of things I should be doing today to get ready for Family showing up on Wednesday, but instead I will be spending much of the afternoon at a MRR openhouse being put on by one of our NMRA Members in my division.  He has an outstanding layout and I always enjoy seeing it (even though I saw it a month ago...)!

Todd....  I got news for you.  There are a lot of things you can often get cheaper at local stores compared to Mall Wart!  For myself, if the only place I can get it is Mall Wart,  I don't need it!  (I don't like the store in case you didn't notice.......Whistling)

OK, if I'm going to get anything done on the list, I best get under motion...

Later!

Robby ... Perhaps this unit will help with roof top weathring. It's a GP40, but that may not matter.

I took the picture in Nashville last summer.

Well here's my new "work horse".  Its a GP38-2.   Of course it will get the "weathered" look.   I will start on that this weekend.  First the fade, and some grime, etc...

Good Morning! Denver Omelet please and a big ol honkin’ cup of coffee.

Feeling like I’m living in a Railroad townYes. They aren’t suppose to be here until the 1st to tear up the crossing, but they are standing at the crossing now and the tie load train shows ever once in a while and the little whatevers they plunk on the tracks. I hope to get some pictures soon as they are in Sherman now working their way north.

I have done the research and discovered that Soy oil does indeed have a very high smoke point. Well passing what I need. Now I will use soy oilYes. But not this yearWhistling. I did make a trip to town yesterday, and remembered to stop at the Farm and Home store for the oil. They did not have Sunflower oil, but they did have peanut blend for (sitting down?) $4 a jug CHEAPER than Walmart. Yes true.

Lee- Huh, thank you. You know I never thought of GFS. Well I did, but the actual warehouse. I keep forgetting of the GFS….store, I guess you call it. It is cleeeeear on the other side of Springfield, but my Mother now lives about ¾ of the way there from my house. So it’s much closer. There I know I can get my soy oil in larger, therefore cheaper, jugs.

If you’ve ever had to clean up vegetable oil after frying guys, try Soybean oil.You cannot tell the difference in anything except the cleanup. You will switch I assure you. I can see why it’s better for the arteries.

Ray- It is no wonder they were willing to work for you. That was a Princely sum back then. Of course, If you want good help, you’ll have to pay for them and pay to keep them too.

There has been some thinking going on in my noggin. Very funny Vinnie, Hardy har-har. Anyway. There are things I want that would not be very prototypical. I’m thinking Toddtypical is the way to go. Something that looks good, naturally but not necessarily for any given place. Like I’m building my own world. Which... I am.  I’ll have to think some more.

I’d sure hate to be one of the signal guys. They stand there at crossings from sun up to past sundown with a stop/slow sign waiting for a train or something else to come so they can switch the sign from slow to stop. Talked to one of them yesterday, their first day in town. Yes it is boring. Until after dark. When a train comes or whatever else, he then must step out in front of the vehicles with his sign and his little light on his hat and wave the stop sign hoping they see him and stop. Now, you'd assume people could see that, but then again, how many pull out in front of trains.

Better get out to Mom’s house. I have a wall to replace.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Good Morning All,

Back in the shop this morning to do some cleaning in the office, fiddle the CFO's mighty and majestic RAM50 (nee Mitsubishi) and other assorted friviolity. I'll have a regular coffee please (cream, no sugar for those of you not living in New England or otherwise needing translation).

Ken - besides the duckunder you could do a swing bridges as well. If Ican get them tocopy, I did one on the previous layout as it was in a 9 x 9 area and had only one access point (two outside walls, the staircace to the basement, and banked up to the furnace and water heater on the fourth side)

IMGhttp://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/510/JRswing_bridge_002.jpg/IMG

IMGhttp://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/510/JRswing_bridge_001.jpg/IMG

IMGhttp://www.trainboard.com/railimages/data/510/JRswing_bridge_004.jpg/IMG

This was a three level swing bridge and due to poor planning on my part had a pair of curves as well as a wye on the top level the secind level was a curve and the first level never got done as it was all wrecked in the fire and later flood (no pestilence though and my water never turned red).

Back to it. I'll stop in later for lunchBig Smile.   J.R.

 Good morning.

I'm off this morning to the LHS, and pick up a "early" b-day gift.   Then comeback home and help clean the house.

Barry.......That's fine.   I will keep a lookout for the PM.

 Galaxy........2000 !!  Maybe one day we will be at Jeff's 14,000 +

Ken.........May I suggest a "lift out".  I had a duck under and it was getting to be a pain, plus Jessica couldn't help me on the layout.   She has bad knees from years of softball and she has a hard time "ducking" under.  On the layout I have now I installed a lift out.   Much easier and if you have to get something or do something you unplug and lift instead of ducking under.

Galaxy - WAY TO GO !!! 2000 posts that is impressive CakeBow

I just caught up again in the Diner.  Feeling like I'm part of the community again.

Very cold these past 3 days, and SNOW has been here since Wednesday.  Time to wake up the quad and snow blade.

I had 3 medical appts this afternoon (massage, Dr, physio) = MVA connections, starting to feel like it's working - so much for my day off.  At least the weekend is here. Between sports, honey sales table, and Sun church - Monday is when I can sit back and relax a bit - oh yeah, some work has been scheduled for that day.

Blessings and prayers

cheers, krump

Good morning,

By the time you all read this, I will have surpassed the 2000th post mark! WHoo HOO! What do I do now? Celebrate with a Drinks??? Its way to early for that now! amybe later!

WEll the other half has 6 packed days of work next week, including 4 hours TG day. Thats what happens when you work retail at the holiday time. Not happy, but we need the money.

The day after TG is a day off though....maybe we go SHOPPING for doorbuster sales....!!!!

I had always worked retailing or food service and always worked the day after TG so I couldn't go to the doorbuster sales. Now I can and I LOVE it...all the great bargains for stuff I did'nt know I needed until it went on sale for that super low price!

Already went shopping for "early door busters" at one store and racked up $200 in much needed new winter clothing, for both of us.

Well, I shall, as brakie says, "have a cup and look over the forum".

Gotta love the 2000th post! Geeked

Good morning Mr. & Mrs. Model Railroader and all the trains making up time!

Sir Madog:  I was in Deutschland back in the early 70's while employed by the US Army.  Once a friend and I drove up to Amsterdam,  to partake of some of the city's "charms"  and I think  we drove through Hamburg just to do it.  That was almost 40 years ago so I don't remember exactly all that happened on that particular adventure.  St. Pauli Girl is one of my favorite beers.

The welcomes from all are greatly appreicated.

Maybe today I can spend some time with my FMRR (floor mounted railroad) and new Zephyr-Extra.

 Afternoon Folks

Flo, give Morgan a Beer on me, and I will have one as well.

OK, on the bad thing I was afraid was going to happen today. I am not going into details for now. and I may be worrying my self silly for nothing. Everybody health is fine (Thanks Todd for thinking off Tiff) and no one is going to jell.

Track Planing Boy that has taken over my life right now. It is a Hobby in a Hobby in it's self! I bet today a lone I spent 3 hours on the computer messing with it.

Morgan I like this version the best so far. But, you might have missed foot print I going to use in the garage. Here is a updated one.

It will add 24 square feet. I am most impressed with your ability to draw the yard so well. Yard that sizes would take me 4 hours by it self.

Gary Could you post a link about the layout you where speaking about? All so feel free to chime in with more ideas.

Here is what i have been toying with today.

First this is not the plan, but it has gave me more ideas. First thing you need to understand is at the top (by Garage Door) is the two high speed lines. They are at leas 4 inch's higher that the Branch lines. Best way to pick up the branch line is where they head into the mountain. Branch lines will have so smaller grades but will never be the same height on the High Speed Lines.

Lower left off a branch line is the grain elevator. Then the branch line line heads into a double cross over and in to the beginning of a 90 degree yard and then another double cross over heading back to the top.

I made a places on the High Speed line for the mine, it is on the right side by the door. While I am not crazy about a reversing loop (I have the gizmo for making one) and it makes scenes for empties come in one way and full ones go out the opposite way.

 OK, what I don't like.

Where the big mountain is. I will try Saturday with it on the upper right side.

Lack of yard. By moving the mountain to the upper right, I can have a yard against the left long wall.

2 Duck Under or lift out. But, I will deal with them for the right plan. I don't think this is the right one.

While I like the high speed lines being side by side. Far as I know branch line would not be, unless they are heading into a yard. Ya Morgan I am starting to get the idea.

By the way Morgan, can you post the layout with a white background? I like to print them but don't want to waste the color ink.

See you all Saturday.

                       Ken

Room plan: Yeah, I havn; pulled out the airconditioner or the breakerbox jut yet, whixh probably would help open up the other sde of the yard tracks. Still, I'm not sure I want to give up all room to the Air Conditioner just yet, as those things can be a monster to wrestle into place. Breaker Boxes I could butt up to though with no qualms. But I'll ditch them next time I work in RTS.

Lift Outs: Did you see the post for the pneumatic lift bridge 10 pages back or so? Also, what about a dutch door approach? It seems to me that on a plan like the one you posted, the two would be easy enough to get through without the lifting and realigning.

Reversing Loop Gotcha, the grain mill will lose it's own then. I always preferred swicthing the mines and usung the loop on the Mill.

Still could use some thoughts on the  I fogot the mention of a turntable, so that will help, if you still want it. Otherwise, if your concern is just turning engines, I made a reccomendation to BridgeTom a few years ago about a collapsable turntable. Like a drop-out section, it's on a table-leaf like hinge and when you need to spin a loco, you fold it out into the aisle, then spin the support for it back under the layout and allow it to fold down perpendicular to the benchwork when you don't need it. Note: Don't put a lot of detail on the turntable that can get snagged on passing clothing.

When you do the layout plans, have you [put much envisionment in each of the flyovers? I find picturing scenes in the design to be helpful, but I'll see something a bit differently than you might.

-Morgan

Ozart Belt ... Wow! good to see you! .... The camp looks fantastic in the website! Good for you! ... Have fun with model trains whe ntime allows!

Ken ... I'm trying to recall when I heard about Jim Hediger's construction. It may have been in his first video in the MR Forum, History by Hediger. ... The idea is to make X-shaped legs as for a picnic table. The lower lever is at the same height as the middle of the "X". That allows more room for the layout on the lower level.

No matter how much you push the envelope, it'll still be stationery

Wow, I have really been away for awhile... come back and everything has changed. Then again, a lot has changed for me these past few years... Haven't done much with trains, though I do have a micro layout I am starting on since I moved. Pics below. Haven't done much with it yet.

[View:http://picasaweb.google.com/PrayerKnight/UntitledAlbum#5541459457626472626:550:0]

In other news, I work full time now at a camp. http://www.joyel.org (Joy El Ministries) and loving it. I live on the camp site and am engaged to my best friend! So a lot has changed. I hope to try and get back into the hobby though! Glad to see I recognize most of the names of frequent posters. So not everything has changed.

Well, bottom of the page, that ain't gonna happen. So a slight bump is needed.

Oh, and I'm finishing up ballasting my pre-laid track. Now once I get the final stretch glued down, I'll weather it and wait until more track is laid down. Here's to that.

Whistling

Hi gang,

Almost lunch time.  Chloe, I'll have a cajun chicken sandwich with all the trimmings. HC to chase.

Well Fellas and Gals, it's time to dig out the winter gear. Anyone east of here are due for an Alberta Clipper that came roaring through here yesterday.   We had 4" of snow and extremely high winds.  Today we woke up to -23c and a little more snow overnight. But it is now sunny. Darn, it is cold.........>>>>>.......,,

It was good to get away and visit our youngest Son in Spokane, but always good to get home. Trip home was solid rain from Spokane up to Fernie BC. then ice from Fernie to Medicine Hat  with heavy blowing snow and next to no visibility. We just ran behind a truck at about 30 MPH and let him burn his eyeballs out looking for the road. Once we got to the Saskatchewan border it was clear sailing home. I guess that got us ahead of the on coming clipper.

I used to do this all the time for a living.  Have to say, I am glad I don't have to get up in the morning and look forward to that anymore.

While in Spokane, I picked up a mini table saw and a power sander from Harbor Freight, and a bunch of landscaping material from Sunset junction.  So I didn't come home empty handed. Also got another track cleaning car by Bachmann Silver Series. MOW, weed spraying service. Got it for $20.00 at White Elephant.   Always seem to come home with at least one more piece of rolling stock.

Just on my way out to shovel off the deck and dog pen so the mutts will have an easier time of it.

Stay warm gang, it will warm up in about five months........ Will check in later.

PC. Glad to here your Boy is feeling better. Give him our best wishes.

Speaking of ED’s OJ what has he been up to?

Speaking of things to do: I doubt I’ll be online Saturday, heading down to the layout tours in Ashland and Wooster, not sure if I’m going on the layout tours Sunday in town here or not.
