If we're headed to Colorado, in November, how about an Amtrak ride?

Here's a photo taken from the rear door window of the westbound Amtrak California Zephyr in Colorado where we met the eastbound CZ.. I took the photo in summer of 2006.

Chris. Thanks for telling about the Amtrak service they will be providing near you. Trains have never been able to compete with highways ever since instersates were built. They have not been competetive with air since 707 and DC8's went into service while government spent taxpayer money on big airports, Governemnt loses money on airports, highways, and passenger trains. ... Trains are most fuel efficient. So, they may as well spend moeny on trains while they spend so much on fuel wasting highways. No wonder the balance of trade is so negative. .... In TN, I watched the rail line being upgraded thanks to taxpayers for the Music City Star commuter train. At the same time, the nearby Insterstate highway was being upgraded. Both projects are completed. The train is lightly traveled while people drive to work on a 70 mph, 8-lane highway.

Ulrich ... A narrow guage layout may be just right for you. There is potential fun scratch-building structures and so on. I bet Wolfgang can attest to that.

Good Morning Everyone,

I had a sleepless night - not due to my usual insomnia, though. I am still all exited about my find. How could I ever forget I have such a treasure?

There are so many fond memories connected with that loco, which all came to my mind last night. I remember very well, how much I had to fight cleaning it for the paint job, putting on a coat of primer and spray painting it. It was my first attempt at working with an airbrush and without the help of a friend, it probably would have turned out to be a complete disaster. Karl Riese, an expert modeler, died recently, so this loco is some kind of a tribute to him as well.

I know, that having a loco does not mean having a layout, but I think I should read this as a sign to do something with that loco. It deserves to get some mileage on it, after being boxed in for such a long time. Maybe I take up Wolfgang´s suggestion and build a HOn3 module or mini-layout, just to be able to see it run. I have no idea how to finance such a venue, but there is a certain obligation, isn´t it?

Narrow gauge modeling is a challenge - supplies are limited in Germany, there is only one dealer who sells Blackstone stuff. Unfortunately, narrow gauge does not mean narrow prices - $ 120 for a caboose is quite a lot. I don´t know whether LaBelle is still around, they used to make affordable kits. My dream train would consist of two stock cars, a flat car and a combine - $ 500 for the rolling stock is out of question!

Well, time will tell, what I will be able to do with it, other than just keeping it boxed again.

Zoe, a strong coffee, pancakes, sausages, fried eggs (sunny side up) and buttered toast, please.

Have a good one!

Such a module like my Salina is not expensive, about 240 EUR with track and wood. And I have to build the structures still.

Currently, even that is way out of reach for me - living off Hartz IV excludes any type of hobby, Wolfgang. I have about $ 10 free cash each month, and I have been saving up money - only to see it go for odds and ends. like energy bill, little repairs et al.

All I am allowed to have is dreams...

Good Morning Folks!

Just a cup of coffee please!

Sorry I have not been more chatty lately, been really busy.  Awesome Amtrak picture, I rode the Zepher from Chicago to Cali, back in the 90's.

Have a great day and weekend, I am off on Friday - 3 day weekend!! It's much needed.

Good Morning,

Ulrich, that is a great find!

Well I got the hint this morning; I woke up to 2 cats, 1 dog, and my girlfriend all piled around me so I turned the furnace on. Today’s High will be around 55F and the low will be just above freezing.

Movers are coming to the office to move us down the hall and around the corner.

Good morning from NY!

Robby P. It DOES actually give me some tracking info now for that USPS package from Hawaii. It was ordered Sept 30, and the order was filled/shipped Oct 5th. I have no info til I just checked the USPS "Delivery COnfirmation Number" again to see if by some weird chance it siad "delivered". and  which actually DOES give me some tracking info. On Oct 24 it landed in Bell CA. and was processed there. No idea where it is from there, but gives me hope. It spent nearly 20 freaking days on a boat from Hawaii to CA....freaking CRUISE SHIPS do a whole cruise to the Hawaiian islands from LA AND returns in just 7-10 days!!!! Shoulda sent it cruise ship service faster. They could do two trips to te islands AND back in that time frame.

The reason is it also contains cologne which is alcohol based and considered dangerous. SO it has to go slow boat and ground in the USA. OTHer sites carrying the same product do warn 4-6 weeks delivery due ot alcohol content as well. Not uncommon eveything can say "4-6 weeks" and with the efficiencey of the USPS today hasn't taken more than two weeks in 100 years.

They say with teh acoholic content it can't be shipped via air, which is how UPS ans FEdEx do it. NOw get this-----IF, and only IF I wanted to pay $35 on top of my $30 order, I could have had it Airmailed! WHAT I ASk you, is the bloody difference? If they can't ship air mail which UPS and FEDex do, for a regular $10 shipping charge, due to alcohol content, WHat the Devil is the difference if I pay MORE for it that it goes Airmail anyway?????????? Hmm

SoapBox   over at least I know it here on the mainland and left CA on Monday. I hope.

GARRY- I hope you are feeling better. I once injured my back at work many many years ago spent 2 months out of work on temp. disability, then another 4 months on unenjoyment till I stared working again. I had  to roll out of bed onto all fours onthe floor, then use the bed and night stand to stand up and when i went to bathroom I always sat so I could reach the flush handle without agony of leaning over. I managed 5 days a week to haul myself up into my 4x4 pickup to go each and every day to the chiropractor for adjustments for relief and therapy that seemed forever to work. then whileout I would go to grocery store and buy Heat-n-eat microwave dinners to eat as I couldn't stand to cook. My roomate was kind enough to do my laundry adn take out trash and she was  a 75 y/o woman! SO I sympathize and empathize with yuo man! you are on my special thoughts and prayers list now Angel Angel

Meanwhile my back is healing nicely...but I definitely don't think it took away any pain already there from before surgery. the incision with 7 sticthes in a 2 inch incision is starting to itch so that is a good sign!!!

I had a Lipoma benign tumor rmoved. I hope he got all from boht sides,as I don't want to go through this again, but i f ihave to I have to. MAybe now another MRI to see?I know they only like to do/schedule one proceedure at a time, but man....while you're in there...get it all thank you.

ULRICH I can join the "happy for you club" It's alway nice to find some treasure you did'nt know you had! Bang Head Wow  It's a beauty alright!Bow  Yes a miralce it is! AngelAngel

WhistlingMusic It's a miracle, a true blue spectacle, a miracle come true/ It's a miracle, a true blue spectacle, a miracle in you Music Whistling  {{from a song by Barry Manilo during the 70's}} {oh never mind}

Well, I guess thatis all for now.

I did sleep good last night withteh help of AMbien. and wasn't up every 2 hours to ice 'er down. But man I slept apparently on my left side the whole nigh so my left hip is COmplaining Loudly! and in pain now itself. It should work itself out. I can seemt o win for loosing?

Better quite before I get ridden out of town on a rail and with plenty of MRRs there is plenty of rail to ride me out on.....Geeked

Packer

Rob and Jeff, my next door neigbor has a dog like that. Although it's not just 1, or 2 or even 3; but 5 dogs that bark all the time. This same lady is also the same one who lets her kids run around screamming in the middle of the night. I wonder if there is some noise ordinance I can get her on. Then again I could remove the catalytic converters from my car.and maybe get glasspacks Mischief (father's car has the same engine and exhaust, but no cats and it's fairly loud)

Disturbing the peace. After 10 pm it goes for loud music/parties, screaming kids, loud vehicles, etc.

As for the loud exhaust, your fathers car has the same setup my van has. Blown out glass pack, open pipes, echo chambers, no cat. The neighbors know exactly when I start it up and they really hate the occasional backfire through the pipes.

I am joining in for a coffee, just before I´ll have a nap. Must be getting old - I start to like a mid-day snooze!

Galaxy - thanks for the nice song! Barry Manilow was not really on my list of favorite in those days, too greasy I´d have said Whistling I do remember the Hew Haw show on TV, a bit stupid, but somehow nice.

Lee - our daytime temperature does not exceed 40 F these days. Means that I am in charge of warming Petra´s feet Wink

Been thinking on what to do with the loco. In any case I will build a small test track to get it running. A few lengths of HOn3 track will do - need to find a source here in Germany.

Good Morning! Coffee please.

Wow, assuming Charter is a phone service, sounds like someone else gets redeemably (I decided to leave that word in there to show what the spell checky thing in word chose to assume I meant when I typed reeeeally but yet somehow can't get "the" out of "teh". Odd.) cranked over the phone.

Speaking of phone, PC you out there bud? Maybe we oughta move this thing close to Indy amd Tongue Tied( see comment about spell check above)send out a search party.

I’m in the LAST AREA TO REMODEL!!!!! YIPPEEE!!!!!!  WOOOO HOOOO!!! Ran into a situation with the old flooring and decided it best to pull the old sub floor and replace it. Got half replaced yesterday and now the operation is stalled until Saturday due to life’s little bumps. You know w*rk, gotta take Mom to the doctor’s, sleep etc. I believe I shall bring my table saw home this weekend. A very good sign. When the miter saw comes home, that's a GREAT sign.

Ulrich- I’m praying things go well in you interview. I see you too are getting good signs with the finding of ol’ # 47.

Ok, I wasn’t gonna say anything for fear of getting your hopes up. But, they are replacing the mainline for this new high speed rail thing. (I know Ulrich, I know.) They have the ribbon rail and the crossing pads on site. They are suppose to be here from the 4th of Nov thru the 8th. I hope to get some pictures of the project with my nnneeeewwwww Canon Rebel to share, but I may get involved and end up not getting any. ConfusedYou’d have to know me to understand. On second thought forget it. I won’t say anything about it yet.

Best get going I have a Mother to take to the doctors this morning.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

 Good morning.

Not much planned for me today, other than cleaning the house.  I have a couple of things to finish up on a boxcar, and maybe get a few more cars Monday after I take a school test.   I might fool around with the layout and see what I can do, and see if I can use the ideas I have gotten.

 Ulrich..........Good looking find you found!!

I will pop back in later.

 Good Mourning New York.

Flo, 2 eggs over easy, 4 strips of bacon, English muffin and a coffee please.

Inter net is finally working right! My speed is still lower than it should be, I am only at 5.62 download and 2.13 upload but yesterday I only had .16 upload. So I am still going to complain some more (get money off the bill) I was told my upload should be 12.0. I might not need as fast as services now that Charter is staring to fix there line problems!

Ulrich Great fine! I have found train stuff I had forgot about and I have only been doing this for 6 years. Al so good luck with this coming Friday. Hope you get the job.

 Train Front

Finally figured how to make turns using flex track with the Atlas track planer! Big Smile Next I am going to do a mock up of a duck under that is 44 inch tall and see if I can live with it.

Plan is starting to form in my head to what the bench work might look like. Got to do a scale drawing of the garage and see how it will fit. The 6 main lines will be right around 85 feet.

All so might be time to sell off the K-10 mining section. At 9.5 X 5 feet it eats up a lot of room for only one line be ran through it.

 See you all for lunch.

Well, no mid-day snooze for me today! Just as I was getting ready for it, Petra called me. there was a report on the Strasburg PA RR museum on TV, which was a joy to watch. The guy commenting it pronounced Strasburg like Stress-Burg, which made me chuckle. Must have been a nephew of Herr Flick, for those of you who remember "Allo, Allo".

Zoe, a bucket of coffee, please, I have a hard time to keep my eyes open.

Todd - high speed line? You knew I´d be jumping on this! Anything below 200mph ain´t no high speed over here, sir. Our commuter trains are doing 100 mph.

Ken - I have learned a lesson out of this. Never leave a box unopened! OTOH, if I had discovered the loco earlier, I´d have probably sold it. Now it is here to stay!

November 5th is the BIG day of the interview - I am quite confident to get the job. In all my professional life, I always got the job, when I had the chance of an interview. There is no reason why I should not make it. If not, I´ll just by two flight tickets to Mexico, swim through the Rio Grande and pick cotton.

Just got my business cards.........CHECK IT OUT!!!

I just scanned it so its going to have a "grain" look to it, but its a neat look card!!  The bold line is a dark gray, and the smaller line is a light gray.    Maybe later Jessica can get it to scan better.

Just been cleaning out my closet. One trash can full and that just made a dent. Still lots of stuff to go through. So far I've found some track I didn't know I had and I also found a box full of landscaping  supplies. Turf, clump foliage, ballast, etc. There's one large item down in the bottom of the closet that has to go and it's going to be fun getting it out the door. It's an old Gateway monitor that was made back before they found out how to make them lighter. The darn thing has to weigh near 100 pounds. The monitor next to it is staying. It's the old green screen for my Apple IIe. There's still the other half of the closet to sort through as well. Lots of old train stuff on that side, some of which will be getting pitched. Most of it is no good anymore and I've been packing it around for close to 30 years. It's time has come. I'll hang onto anything that can be salvaged.

Good Afternoon All,

Spring cleanings come early, eh? Did a bit myself last week and found some treasures as well. No missing locomotives, but lots of stuff I'd forgotten all about. Good find indeed Ulrich - it's a message to you for sure. What happens when you order from overseas? is it less expensive to get stuff from a retailer or mail order and pay duty? It's always a bit of a c..pshoot to actually get what you order (witness Galaxies Hawaiian shipment) but that might get you your track more easily when you gt the chance to build.

  Love the business cards, Robbie.

Have one wall up for the back of the hobby bench and started laying out the space for the train room (or did I already report that ?- I claim a senior moment).

Back from my trip to Ontario and trying to get outside the shop tidied up before the weather turns too much. Got lots of rain on the trip but was spared the high winds and other bad stuff. Just a regular to go and I'll try to drop in later.   Cheers, J.R.

Hi guys

In absolute AGONY. Had to go do banking, Sam's cLub, AC Moore, and Wallyworld for food shopping. Then to put it all away. Banking had to be done as my disabiltiy check came and now is gone! Worst part is, I think it still my old back issues killing me and NOT the incision area form the removal of the tumor! I could use some fentanyl ro morphine about now. All the chores HAD to be done.

GMTRacing: have you read our private "conversation" PM lately? Just wondering...If I should be looking out for something else Besides the Hawaii shipment. Just wondering?! Just curious?! WOuld be most appreciated! Geeked

Also ordered today a new EZCommand system and some new track from wholesaletrains.com for under the tree layout. SHipped out today already as they had all in stock. Only coming from 45 mins. away so should be on my doorstep tomorrow. They had the set with a  0-6-0 loco for $75.99. Can't beat that anywhere. I don't really need another 0-6-0, but wanted the Chessie GP 40 set for $82.00 they had on sale last week, but missed out on the order!!! leasson learned. Elsewhere ANY EZCOmmand/loco set is $139.99. I know it's bachmann but I love my ezcommand and it really is all I need for under the tree...I dont need to spend more on another more expensive one. I could share with my layout, but i wnat to make the tree layout permanent and want to mount the controls to it,so really need second controller.

Robby P. card looks good even grainy and washed out! Hopefully you will earn some good money at the show!! ANd the weathering powders oh my! TO bad Pitt is 7 hours away from me or else I'd attend just to watch you work! and have you do my Corning Hopper Car to look like yours!

WEll. I think it is time to get off my feet, lay down, take a nap and rest my back!

later dudes!

Wolfgang ... Feel free to include some inspiring photos of your layout here in teh diner.

Robby ... I like the business cards.

Galaxy ... I definately feel for you and your back problem now.  Thanks for your remarks about mine, too. My back problem results from an accident almost 20 years ago. I was driving following all the rules. A drunk driver drove into my drivers door at 50 mph. Some of my vertebrae were broken, and I lost feeling and movement in my legs. Surgery was about 10 hours, and thankfully, the main nerve was mostly OK. I know what you mean about taking morphine. It was several days later when the male nurse helped me make my first trip out of bet to the bathroom. I can not forget how that felt. After being in the hospital, I spent a few months in a metal back brace. FInally, I could do the phyiscal therpy which was several months. It was about a year before I could do anything such as going to work.

Want to hear a rant about drunk drivers? Probably not, but I'll just say, I think police should be allowed to shoot to kill anybody they catch driving while under the influence. That's the only way to end the carnage on our highways caused by drunks.

The drunk who hit me spent only one night in jail and later lost his license for only 90 days.

Now, I'm having one of my back events which happen from time to time. Last two days, I could not walk. Today is slightly better. It will slowly get better and by end of next week, I will be normal again.

Yesterday, I missed out on a great tour of the Cateroiller/ Progress Rail plant tour in Mayfield, Kentucky. They are rebuilding former Amtrak F40's to be used in Chicago suburban service.

My neice is getting married in Alabama this weekend. We weres planning on leaving tomorrow morning. I may have to cancel the trip and miss out on a good wedding and family get together.

How about more to my rant on drunk drinng? I'll hold off.

Anyhow, Galaxie, prayers for you and your back problem.

Evening New York!

Flo, Big Boy Sub toasted, extra cheese, peppers, onions, olives and hold the Mayo! Oh, Big Pitcher of Beer and a frosted Monon Mug!

Robby P Card looks good, my self I would have used a Big Boy or Y 6b. Is the engines a GS 4?

Ulrich I all so thought finding the engine might be sign of your luck changing. Am I superstitious, well most people in sales are a little. Lucky shirt, lucky tie and so forth. Mine was a Lucky Cross Pen, one day I made $1600.00 in 10 hours with it.. Then it was lost / stolen and my sales went to heck and I was fired. Now, do I think the pen really had anything to do with it? No, but I guess I will never know for sure. Big Smile Take the train with you for good luck, I am sort of kidding.

Galaxy Sorry you are in pain.

GTM Getting ready to do some fall cleaning my self. I know I have some car stuff that will be going. I don't think I will need a custom engine stand will hold 1000 pounds anymore. I all so have at leas two set of stereo speakers that need new homes. Then there the extra tuners, turntables, preamp's, amps, EQ's from my hard core Audiophiles days.

All so will be getting rid of some of the old train stuff I will never use. I will list the stuff here I don't want and will give away. All I would ask is to be paid for the shipping. Stuff no one wants I will take to K-10 Model Train and he can give them to the kids.

Making room for the new layout

Home Projects Got the last of the cabinets door shot today! Big Smile I think they look the best, finally found the right setting on the paint gun and they laid out pretty slick. All most looked like car paint. OK, looked better than some paint jobs that where brought to me to fix from other people / shops. Grumpy Friday I will paint the face of what left of the cabinets around 7:00 AM, hope I can hang the doors around 1:00 PM. Whats your thought Todd Villa?

 Things Left to do.

1 Paint the Range Hood. I think I have that figured out

2 Paint the folding doors and install knobs.

3 Paint my old nasty looking dresser I was given 30 years ago. Wife wants it in the kitchen?

4 Reinstall the bathroom door frame, need to paint it first.

 5 New Kitchen sink

6 Finishes Hallway floor, but with Tiff having problems walking (been doing pretty good the last few days) Sue and I decided to hold off for now.

Next step and when Sue will figure out I am up to something will be ripping out the storage room in the garage!

 Time for some NCIS.

 Almost bed time.

Well right now the package I mailed off might be lost!!  Staples doesn't have it nor does UPS.   The claims department said to give it to Monday, and see what happens.

I think the business cards came out good, and people have told me to get some nicer looking ones.   I found a company that does them real cheap.  I think they did a good job.

Ken........I'm not sure what kind it is.

Evening Cleveland!! *flo holds up sign saying NY* Whoops, I mean New York.

Messed with the car a bit today and got the check engine light to go away for good. The fuel filter ended up being the culprit. The one that was in the car was a Fram, and when I went to drain it, it took forever to drain (more like dribble) out. No light, no rattling. While I was under the rear I tried to take the driveshaft out and switch the factory one with the aluminum one I have. The bolts were stuck so PB-blastered them and waited a few minutes still nothing. hit them again and I'll see about getting it some other time. Also found my coolant leak. I went under to check and saw a couple drops on the lower radiator hose, some white stuff around the edge where it connects to the radiatior and a pair of clamps in the middle of the white stuff. Bought a new hose but ran out of daylight. Will get tommorow (took 2 weeks for it to get low enough for the light, 1 day shouldn't hurt)

I also found out why the neigborhood squirrels are crazy. I took a picture of one eating some wild mushrooms out of my yard. Wonder if those squirrels will still be usable for jerky in the winter?

Ulrich, dunno how I missed that post, but a nice find (literally) there.

Jeff, Aha. Guess I'll use that one for the neighbor down the street who plays his music real loud. He lives 3 houses over and I can still tell what he's listening to (usually skynard). My fathers car is loud but it's not obnoxiously loud. he doesn't have echo chambers or glassbacks, just a set of magnaflows with the stainless mesh in them. My magnaflows are all stainless so in theory they should last forever.

Garry, I hear you on the drunks. However I think being caught while talking on the cell phone/texting/ what ever should have liscense revoked for at least a year, some jail time, and a fine. can't tell you how many near misses I've had cause someone was to busy doing whatever.

Rob, looks good, but I think one of your cars would work better as the picture. Do the AIM powders make that much of a difference? I've always used some off-brand pastel sticks. I use a lot since they get blasted off by a seal coat pretty easy and aren't very vibrant.

Ken, What kind of road vehicle would have engine stands for 1,000 pounds other than big rigs? Guess the extra weight capacity might not be such a bad thing though. I have an engine crane that goes up to 2,000. but usually just use it for pulling engines and transmissions out at the same time (351W plus a C4 is pretty heavy).

What kind of stuff were you tossing? I have some of those old athearn BB beer scheme plug-door boxes that have been on my bench for a long time. Don't really see how they'd fit in in my layout plans (BN in the rockies to the pacific northwest) I think you had a pic with a bunch of the light blue and white ones?

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Insomnia strikes again - Crying

I haven´t had a decent sleep for ages now, that sucks!

Flo, a big mug of hot milk with honey and some cookies, please!

Jeff - maybe you´ll also find a treasure in that closet Smile, Wink & Grin

Rob - I like your business cards!

J.R. - We have a few mail order businesses over here, which carry US stuff, but with a limited range of products. There is only one who sells HOn3 stuff, but at prices, which I will not be able to pay. Ordering in the US is out of question, as no bank in the world would issue me a credit card. So sourcing will be a big issue...

Folks, have we agreed on the new location? I see the hostler firing up a Mike to pull it to.... (fill in the blank).

Vincent.........I think the powders are the best out right now.   You can spray it will dullcote or hair spray and the powder is still visible!!!  Its good stuff.    I used one of the pictures they had.  I didn't wanna send them a picture and they can't upload it.  So I went the easy route and picked it.

New location? I got one, or two. (both of them in the Deep South)

In the Apalation Mountains, in Bryson City, North Carolina (near the NC/TN/GA tri-state boarder) with the tourist train running through (I hear it's beautiful this time of year)

At the Roundhouse Museum, in Savannah, Ga: http://railga.com/oddend/roundhouse.html

Or, at the Reynolds Industrial Park, at the North East Florida Railway Museum (a few hundred feet down the tracks behind the location where this photo was taken: http://railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=339768&nseq=1)

Of course, the Roundhouse may be easier to do, since I doubt CSX will move those AC-6000CWs any time soon (the darn things are still sitting there, as they were, for about 2 or 3 months now...) Unless that notch-8 and suction-cup trick would work to jump all 12 locomotives.

That's about it from me for this month (unless one of my suggestions get picked)

Evenin' folks!

Flo just a glass of water for me....  Nope!  Only allowed water until I have the blood draw tomorrow.  But don't worry I'll be in for a very big breakfast after THAT.

Aha!  I hear we have a Mike being fired to make the move at the end of the month.  Thanks Ulrich, I love the Mike, my favorite loco!

Maybe we can scare some trick or treaters late on Sunday evening...  Will be nice to get a warm breakfast here on All Saints Day though.  I really don't care which site gets chosen for the new location.  All the ones suggested sound good.  We should insist THAT photos of the area where we are set up should get posted so we can relate to the scenery.

I apologize for the lack of a longer wine list while we were here in Central NY.  I just got terribly busy with the MRR Project over the last few weeks and this week hasn't been much better.  I'll try to bring in some more local wine from the Finger Lakes before we make the move.  Vinnie can find a good hiding spot for us to get by the revenuers......Laugh

Later!

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!
