Recalling the 9/11 attacks.

Nice of Ulrich to post his thoughts on 9/11/01 from Germany. Good to see others posting on 9/11, too.

My memories:

Shelley and I arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 9/9/01. We flew from Nashiville to Halifax on American Airlines changing planes in Boston.

On 9/10/01, we had a bus tour and learned of major disasters in NS. Halifax was the clostest major harbor to the Titanic, and many bodies for the ship are buried there. A WWI munitions ship exploded in 1917 destroying downtown Halifax and killing about 3000 people. We visited Peggys Cove on the Atlantic coast and learned about Swiss Air 111 which crased in the ocean near the fishing village in 1998.  The town was named after "Peggy" a little girl who survived a ship wrck in the 1800's.

We spent the next day watching the terror in New York City, the Pentagon, and in a PA field. It was awful to say the very least.

Some 50 trans Atalntic flights were diverted to Halifax from US destinations. Thousands of people were stranded in Nova Scotia including ourselves. The Canadians were very kind to all the stranded people. US flags came out and were displayed everywhere.

Flights home were non-existant for a few days. We decided we did not want to fly anyhow. Several days later we took VIA rail to Montreal in a refurbished 1950's all Budd train. It reminded me of the original California Zephyr with its dome cars. From Montreal, we too another all-Budd train to Toronto. We stayed in Toronto for two nights, and then rode Amrtak's "International" to Flint MI.

The Amtrak Train was delayed at the border. We and all other train passengers had to get off the train in Sarnia, Ont., board a bus, ride over the highway bridge, go through customs there, and return to the train in Port Huron, MI. That added 3 or 4 hours to that trip.

In Flint, MI, we rented a car. We drove to Nashville and picked up our car at the airport, and drove home. It was a long trip, but the trains were very nice.

Here is a photo I took from the VIA dome car shortly after departing Halifax:

Happy birthday TSF.Happy B-Day

Went to start my father's truck this morning and lo and behold all I got was a click from the starter relay. It worked fine last night. I took the clamps off, cleaned the posts and clamps with fine fine sandpaper. No difference. I hooked up a battery charger and checked the volts and amps. Fully charged. I tried jumping current directly to the starter with a wrench. Nothing. I checked the wires on the starter. Aha! Found a bad connection. Tightened it up then tried starting it again. Success!

Still waiting for the scrap yard the come get the Century. Picked up another half-pint mistint the other day. It was supposed to come out as Filoli Gold Ecru but looks more like an off-white.

5 minutes later, Check Book said yes.

I knew it. Trainshow.

Good Morning. Big Breakfast please. Over Easy on the eggs and wheat toast please with Blackberry jam. Yup coffee too, thanks.

Happy B-Day TSF!!!

Well it’s "the" anniversary today. I hope the “Preacher” doesn’t burn the Quran…., Kuran however you spell it. Seems kinda stoop-downish to their level. Besides, it wasn’t any more the Muslims fault than it was the Catholics fault my BIL was killed years ago. Anyway, just doesn’t seem like a Preacherly thing to do in my feeble opinion.

Robby- Actually of the three proto photos you posted, the first is the only one I really like. But I bet that thing would be tough. Maybe not as tough as it looks. But the last two, the white streaks just seem painted. I know, I know. They’re not. There just lacks a subtleness or…. Something. Don’t know. Like I said, or meant to say, It’s definitely not your work I don’t like.

Someone could do a absolute stunning replica of a Rembrandt (Artist. Not the toothpaste) but if I don’t like the picture he’s duplicating……I won‘t like the painting. I may like the work, just not the painting. But Plenty of other people will and that’s all that matters. Not everybody will like the same things. Well, except for Farrah's red swimsuit poster and the Parrot Sketch. (chuckling just thinking about it)

Somehing else I was gonna say…….. Can’t remember. Oh well.

I best get headin’ out to Mom’s house. The slave master… er, I mean, Brenda will probably show. They have the elevator open today because in spite of the fact there was an 80% chance of rain last night, they, Framers, insisted they would be in the fields today. So they opened up this morning. Well we got ¾ inch last night. That means, they will sleep in late, except for one or two, bring in the trucks they loaded after the elevator closed last night and say they won’t be getting in the fields. Then, when the elevator says they may close early, the farmers will complain and say, “well, if the fields dry by this afternoon we’ll be in them!!!” So, they’ll stay open, twiddle their thumbs all day waiting paying time and a half, for the frmers to call and ask if they are going to be open Sunday. ’Cause they “plan on being in the fields tomorrow for sure“. Even if it was raining then and a 99% chance it will rain all night and tomorrow. Farmers. Gotta love ’em. Actually, I do, came from a whole family of ’em. Have done a lot of farm work, still do. Still, gotta call a spade a spade.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

185db!!!!!! Holy majoley!!! Jeff that babies like 2 feet from your ear holes!!! A couple blasts from that and it’ll blow not only your eardrums, but probably the hood off the van! The van does look pretty cool though.

That's why the deflection cone is so important. Most of the blast is directed straight ahead. I get some of the back blast off the hood but nothing compared to what the poor soul outside gets. There's also a couple of layers of steel between me and the horn. I've been using it for 8 or 9 years and all that's ever been said by the vehicle inspectors and the law is 'If they can't hear that they're deaf or dead. Either way they don't need to be on the road'. They're cool with it as long as I don't use it to excess. Besides, some of them still remember my 'ocean liner' horn.

Sir Madog

Jeff - I am glad your van is progressing! That air horn is a blast Cool. 185 dB? Perfectly illegal here.

Nothing wrong with it here as long as I don't go around blasting anybody and everybody with it. On average I use it 8 to 12 times a year.

Good Morning Folks,

Zoe, a bowl of cereal and a mug of hot coffee, please. I´ll be in the corner booth for some day dreaming.

I have not been posting for the last couple of days, as there is nothing much I can contribute these days. The situation is unchanged and I don´t think it will improve anymore. Petra and I would need a miracle to happen, and that would be asking just too much. We have to learn how to get settled in our fate.

I have not heard a word from the people in Tanzania for over a week now, so it is my feeling that it won´t happen. I am only a little disappointed, but as both of us prefer a more civilized region of the world, we don´t see it as a lost chance. My search for other opportunities has also led into the nirvana, so it is pretty tough to stay motivated. Seems as if our talents and abilities have no market value in the world.

Jeff - I am glad your van is progressing! That air horn is a blast Cool. 185 dB? Perfectly illegal here.

Have a good weekend.

Howdy. Loks like I’m back on the 13 hour days. I kinda like those couple 8er’s. I just heard some thunder and it has been raining. Looks like Hermine is here after all Garry. Thought maybe you guys was gonna hog it all there for a bit.

Robby- Hopper looks good. Only thing is, my opinion now, I don’t think I’m too keen on the white. Yep, it may be realistic for what it hauls, just something about it doesn’t really do it for me as prototypical and accurate as it may be. The rest to me though, looks your usual great.Thumbs Up

Rob- Eh, real hard to say without seeing if your getting 12volts to the main starter post and to the solenoid with the switch thrown. I have a jumper switch but that won’t do you much good there. Quick and easy way to isolate the starter from all other stuff though. You probably could pick one up at a local parts store. They come in handy for all sorts of other stuff too. I would not recommend the old screwdriver trick. Sometimes things like that cause much more expensive repairs to computers. Often not, but with my luck…..Sigh

Speaking of cars, originally I was going to set my layout in the ’70’s. Music was good, the beer was too...Indifferent….er….so I’ve been told….Whistling . But, the selection of vehicles was slim so I decided to move to the present day instead of a bit farther back in time. I can still use some of the cool cars from the era that they have easier than if I went back to the fifties.

A Possum??

185db!!!!!! Holy majoley!!! Jeff that babies like 2 feet from your ear holes!!! A couple blasts from that and it’ll blow not only your eardrums, but probably the hood off the van! The van does look pretty cool though.

Don’t know Ken’s wife, but I’m also bettin’ he goes to the train show to……..CLEAR HIS HEAD! Yeah, that might work. But, like I said, I don’t know his wife.Laugh

Well, better hit the hay, another long day tomorrow when I too will be working on a floor.

Evenin' folks!

Flo, just a decaf for me.  I'll go sit in the back booth and relax for a bit.

Managed to get a little time to assemble another conveyor for the stone quarry.  Hopefully these will do what I want and not look too modern.  Little by little........

Also went over to my son's house and hooked onto the wood splitter and towed it home.  Of course I had to spend some time while I was there with my two favorite little girls! Big Smile  Truck appears to be running fine, no more crunch, crunch, crunch.

After getting a couple of spam phone calls (Yes I'm on the federal do not call list......) so I decided to check out Roadrunner's new Caller ID on PC (and Mac).  They do it through AIM from AOLThumbs Down.  Haven't used THAT for at least the last 2 computers and the G5 I use most of the time I bought back in 04......  So I downloaded the newest AIM for Mac from them and then had to spend a couple hours trying to figure out what I had used for the screen name and password.Grumpy  Then i spent another hour looking through a whole pile of new bells and whistles RR has and updating my account with them.  I have now blocked 2 numbers that are constantly calling my house (I have never picked up on them as they are from very questionable groups looking to scam people).  I always check out numbers I don't know before I pick up the phone.  Heck, half of the ones I do know, I don't pick up on.  I figure they can leave a message or call me when I feel like answering the %^&*% thing!

Ken,  Gee.....  I would have a lot of difficulty deciding whether to stay home and w*rk on the floor or go to a train show.....   Hmmmm  lets see which would it be.......  One is fun and the other?????  Leans over and whispers.... No brainer guy!  You can finish the floor some other time........  The other half?  well just tell her you don't have something you need to finish it right now (like patience......).  You'll think of something....Smile, Wink & Grin

Hope you all have a great night!

High Folks, been a long day. Flow I will take the Big Boy Steak Sandwich, two extra tenders of Onion Rings and a Pitcher of Beer with a chilled Monon Mug.

Packer

Ken, If S scale (1/64) had more variety find cars for them would be easy. personally I'm trying to find some cars for the 75-85 era for my open autorack. The Fresh Cherries cars cost about that much, ut finding them is the hard part (and most would work for an autorack). I would like to use the Atlas fairmonts and cast them since I have a bunch of the colors that came on them already in spray cans. Right now I have enough of those $1 walmart 69 Camaro SS's to fill it, but I don't think they would have been carried with the tops down.

Packer What are  Fresh Cherries Car's? You might try Die Cast Alley and see if you can find anything that will work. Are you talking about filling a Auto Rack with Ford Fairmots? YUCK!!!!!!!!!!. Glad my Big Boy was not served yet! Smile, Wink & Grin

Floor Wars VS Train Show? Well I have gone as far as I can today with the floor. I need right around 16 feet of 6" wide Luna to finishes the kitchen. Now with Sue wanting the hall way done, I will have them rip off two sections of the 4 X 8 and I am good.

Now, there is a train show Saturday. So should I go to the Train show Thumbs Up or work on the Floor Thumbs Down ?

I will see what you folks say.

Chris,  Nice work on the CNW Geep! I here you on that Athearn Genesis stuff. I have a BN F45 and an MP 60' box from them. They are really nice. So much so that my F45 has to be my favorite loco, with the factory-lit beacon and etched metal fan grilles. I haven't seen one of their GP15-1s up close; but I'm eaglerly awaiting them to announce BN ones (aquirred via the SLSF). BTW, here's a pic of the CNW ones:

I'm hoping I can get some of the Genesis F7s or a 2nd F45 (with soundtraxx sound decoder) for Christmas. If they announce BN GP15-1s by then I'll go for those instead

As far as detailing, I do grabs, hoses, beacons, plows, and antennae. Haven't done Mars lights on my Ex-Q units yets. I'm still mulling about how to change the brake wheel on BB SD40-2s so they can match the mega majority (the 6 SLSF untis were the only ones with nose wheels) of BN SD40-2s

Welp, Community days is tomorrow as well as my 17th birthday. The Farmall has a large american flag on the back, and I've got enough fuel to get to town. I'm going to stop and get some more gas before the parade.  Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll post some pictures of the Old girl on the parade route.

And hopefully tomorrow I should get a muffler and tail pipe for my Jeep. Had to ride the bus today because some of my buddies cut it off. I shouldn't of let them talk me into it. Does sound kinda cool though.

It wasn't in the forecast this morning but we have heavy rain pouring down now. Just got this coming across on my weather station.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms will move northeast between 10 and 15 mph. Some of the affected locations include...Toledo Bend Reservoir to Leesville...near Echo in eastern Rapides Parish as well as near Kinder and Oberlin. Occasional cloud to ground lightning and brief moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible in some of the storms.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Afternoon/Evening, bucket of coffee...to go, gotta head out for Friday Night Under the LIghts (football) shortly.

VINCENT: Yup...I'm with ya on THAT... my locomotives get a lot more attention than the freight cars. But, even then, I can live with an Athearn geep's hood being "a foot too wide." I don't put every detail on, but hit the biggees: beacon light, better horn, appropriate radio antennae, extended cab window, lift rings, grab irons, drop steps, snow plow, the CNW "gong" bell, MU cables, and coupler lift bars. I'm sure the new Athearn GP15-1 is miles ahead of the Walthers (pre-Proto 1000 or whatever) version, but detailed and weathered...the Walthers is just fine by me, even though it's missing the extra vent louvers CNW put in above the engine room doors. From normal viewing distance...I'd about wager THAT isn't even noticible.

JEFF: For some reason, I keep expecting to see a large possum on the side of your van...Whistling Lookin' good, Sir!Thumbs Up

RAY: Don't worry about them Crunch Berries, I'm sure the Cap'n is making up another batch at this very minute. Cedar Rapids is "officially" known as "The City of Five Seasons." The fifth season is supposed to be "fun." Whatever. It also used to be known as "The City of Five Smells" thanks to Quaker, National Oats, Wilson Packing Co., Penford, and Cargill. Quaker isn't bad... it was kinda nice walking around Cedar Lake (CNW North Yard on the west side, CCP yard along the south) and enjoying the smell of Crunch Berries. Dinner

Maybe the Cap'n will dispatch a blue RBL boxcar full of Crunch Berries to the Diner...

Five bells, gotta head out. I get to cover Iowa City West High School tonight, against their bitter rival Iowa City, City High. They have "the battle of the boot." Winner gets a boot, apparently. With cloud cover building, I'm expecting a "mudder" with plenty of un-wanted rain. StormStormStorm

Hey guys

I went epaying again today. Almost got an athearn RS3, but got out bid with less than a second. I think I got botted. Oh well. Hopefully athearn will release another run before I turn 40. The unit would have required adding the angled number boards, and some sort of box in front (long-hood foward) of the cab. The seller of the beat-up SW10 offered a full refund, so at least it's not a total loss.

Chris, Doesn't look to hard to convert it to look like a berwick from the sides (adjust the sill, change stirrups and lower the car itself). end ribs are another story. Just have to bend some more steps and find a brown close to this brown. Nice bit of info they were assigned to paper service though. Got a bunch of cars that should be assigned to that now. Looks like I should have a paper mill and a sawmill on my "to-be-designed in 20 some odd years" layout. Now I should get some woodchip gons to use between the 2. My "looks right" envelope for cars and engines is vary different. Engines I usually want them to be very accurate, cars I'm a bit less strict on. I haven't hunted through my existing roster for foobs yet, but new cars are going to have to be fairly close.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Coffee in a  UNION PACIFIC  mug, please.

Thanks for the all the good suggestions folks. Much appreciated! The pickup is a 2500, plane cab with 8' bed. Book says it's a 2000, but sticker on truck door says 99, for what that's worth. Already tried neutral and the column wiggles, same thing as before, lights come on, no clicks or anything from engine. Tried the hammer trick to starter, too. (I've had alternators go bad in other vehicles over the years and do not suspect that in this instance, but I'm not a car guy so who knows) Related fuses are OK, both small ones inside vehicle and larger types in engine compartment. Need to jack it up a bit and check the wires, perhaps this evening.

Fortunately, we can get hay delivered and that is primarily what we use the truck for. So, if it has to sit a while, no problem. I'm not a mechanic and it takes me a lot longer to work on something than it would someone who knows what they are doing.Confused

Nothing new on the MRRing front yet.

Have a good day y'all.

This is what my van looks like at the moment. I still have to get the roof painted.
