Mornin'

Lets see....  Breakfast or lunch?  Breakfast or lunch???  OK, Zoe cool outside today, so I need a short stck of buttermilk pancakes with a side order of bacon, and a mug of dark roast coffee in a R&GV RR mug.

I have been emailing several people about several items for the last hour, so I am a bit late.  Have a chance to go to the York, PA Large Scale Show next week.  Had to move some items around to be able to do THAT.  The guy who invited me has been every year for the last several.  He is a G scaler so it is right up his alley.  Turns out his wife has a meeting at w*rk the day they were to leave so she can't go with him this year.

I best get moving.  I want to finish the wood cutting and stacking before I leave for the Southern Tier for an operating session late this afternoon.

Later!

So ok, An RC Cola and a Monpie was originally by Big Bill Liston and later covered by NRBQ (a local band when they were the Wild Weeds in the 60's).   J.R.

Jeff- I got a good chuckle thinking about “fat broad” and her eardrums. Hope she didn’t have to “tinkle” when she arrived! By the way, don’t assume the gage is equally inaccurate along the scale. If you haven’t paid attention to the sending unit, it’s just a rheostat thing. If part of the windings are crudded up from lack of use, usually the top of the scale on the gage, from lack of use because large vehicles have a tendency to be expensive and many people don’t fill the tanks all the way up, the windings could, and, trust me on this, read accurate on the low side. Of the gage. Of course the sending unit is usually backwards from that. Anyway, just don’t test your theory without a five gal can of gas in case.

The gauge is a factory rebuilt replacement and the sending unit is brand new, so until I know different I have to assume the reading I'm getting is accurate. I'm not sure but I may have bent the end of the sending unit a little when it was installed in the tank (large sending unit, small hole) and it could be resting higher than it's supposed to. The sending unit, fuel pickup tube and screen and the return tube are all built into one unit an dit measures out at about 18 inches in length. If the thin support arm holding the float were bent upward slightly this would cause the float to be somewhat higher than it should be and it wouldn't start floating until the gas got high enough. I know the tank had 7 gallons in it when the fuel gauge was reconnected and read under 1/8th.

Good Morning. Just coffee again please. Running late as usual. Hey! The dogs gotta poo-poo before I leave or it’ll be a long long day for the poor girl. Give her a break. YOU hold it in til about 2pm when Brenda gets home for lunch. Oh Sorry Flo. Tempers been a little short lately.

Robby- You sound like me. Cautious. I’d rather sell out than be stuck with too much. That amount sounds like an aweful lot of cars in addition to what you will display and demo. That is a lot of shopping and a lot of upfront cash. Of course your train shows probably are a lot bigger than ours. Maybe if you sell out you’ll still have the demos and people will request more work on their cars. That way you won’t be out but the weathering supplies. Well, you’re right. I forgot about the eBay.

Jeff- I got a good chuckle thinking about “fat broad” and her eardrums. Hope she didn’t have to “tinkle” when she arrived! By the way, don’t assume the gage is equally inaccurate along the scale. Did you hear that? Did Bill say something? Oh, sorry it was only a recording of the Kentucky Headhunters…. I think.

Welp, best get going, Ray has used a word I don’t know and the dictionary is too far away to reach. I assume it means “wordy“ or “talkative“, but you never know. So I’ll just be heading out.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

 Good morning.

I took the wife to school yesterday, and got some more "street running" shots.   Only two trains in 2 1/2 hours is pretty bad!!

The plan today is to work in the basement some.   Maybe mess around on the layout.

Ray......The county fair back in NC had a RC (can of course), and a Moon Pie for a dollar.   Now that was a sugar rush.

Jim.......I always change the couplers out, but I might skip this time.   I agree with you and let them change to what they like.

Lee....... I'm sure I will do good.   I have a feeling that I will have over half the show at my table when I give a demonstration.

Galaxy......The thing about weathering the cars at the show is...I won't have any power.  Its $45, and I don't want to pay that.   Plus the dullcote will go all over the place.   I was going to use hair spray instead (to take place of the dulcote).  Now if they want me to do a car for them I normally start at $30 a car.  Since its a show, I will probably cut that to $20.   I will keep you in mind for some cars.  The owner of a LHS said he would help me out when I need to get some things.     I know $500 sounds like a lot (and it is), but I do have eBay to fall back on when the cars don't sell.

 Here's a couple of picture.

Robby P.

Galaxy.........I was going to spend about $300 - $350 on cars, which would be about 15-20 cars.  My wife doesn't think that will be enough to sell.   She thinks more cars.  Plus I have to buy couplers, detail parts, weathering powders, etc (that will be about $100 or so).    I was going to sell some weathering powders also, but I have to buy them (I'm getting  a good deal on them).   I've had people offer me cars to sell/demo with, and I am very happy with that!!!    I guess it's the $500+ that has me rethinking it.    I've had people tell me I will do good at the show, but the way my  luck has been.......I will be lucky to sell two cars!!

Hi Robby P.

That is why I suggested providing the paints and weathering powders, but charging say, $30.00 {25 labor 5 for supplies???}JUST  to weather the clients RR cars they have purchased at teh show. If they need to be taken apart, have the tools necessary to take apart and have client take apart for you and put back together, or if they bought a kit, easier yet for you to weather for them...And any self respecting show should have a Kadee coupler dealer so they can even change out couplers if they want. If you can manage to weather a car nicely in just a half hour, then your fee of $25 for labor would be $50/hour for you pure profit and in a 7 hour day, you could walk away with $350.00 in your pocket for your labor, $35.00 towards costs fo supplies, and have $0 or little cost for RRcars except a few to start demos on until you get first client. Even if supplies and fees cost you $185.00 you'd still walk away with $200. in your pocekt rather than spending that amount!! Geeked You could charge that this time until you get a reputation then perhaps other shows charge more per car, or figure out how much you average making for your time weathering a car over the cost of the cars taht you sold on EBay to guage your prices.

I can send you some of my "cheapo cars" {train set type and other "cheap" Bachmann cars.} to just weather and "gussie up" if you'd like. I could even possibly donate some of them and you could sell them for your profit, though they are not special cars like I said and pay Shipping to send them back if necessary.. .If you are interested. I could send my better cars too, but not for sale to public! just for display I would pay to have them sent back to me.

Just a few thoughts, Robby my boy!

Got to go to the dentist to get partial adjusted this AM. Dermatologist yesterday said any skin growths I have are benign and of no concern though they may be bothersome visually or "in use" {getting a skin tag caught for example} That is good news I wanted to hear, though I have a lot of skin tag type bumps all over that ARE annoying.

Got to do some errands today also. so a busy day ahead.

One of the LHS's owners ran for NYS Assembly and won the {R} primary by 75% of vote. I will have to stop by to see if they close the shop, sell it, or if the wife will contimue to run on her own. They carry trains and other hobby stuff. MAybe he can help effect change in Albany. Hes a nice guy, but I am just out of his district. I may dabble in politics and see if they need campaign help I can do for him behind the scenes. Iam not good with a bunch of people in a large rally, but can paste and sort mailers prior to the final election for him. I am independent of party. Out with the old, and in with the new, I say!

well I guess that's aobut it for this morning.

Oh, we have a friend- the train nut friend we took with us to Steamtown who was bitten by a brown recluse spider 2 days before Railfest on the 4th of Sept. and had a red dime sized spot on the 4th he showed us on his leg. It turned nasty on him and developed into a MRSA {pronounced Mersa} staffalococcus {sp?} infection and is in the hospital to get an artery pick line installed to administer heavy duty antibiotics. MRSA is a very dangerous infection, but eveyone is supposed to carry it and they know better how to aggressively treat it these days. It can still be deadly. He will have the pick line in for about 6 weeks with home nurse vistis to administer the drugs. SO,please add Chris to the Angel lists! TY

Good Morning All,

We're at a small break in the action (one rig to Atlanta today and I'm in N.J. next week, so I'm trying to get back to some sort of routine. 22 different cars at two tracksin two weeks was a bit much but it went well.

Spent time at the museum last night putting down the new N scale track for the two main loops on the display. We're using Peco code 55 and I must admit I'm impressed. It's easy to form and keeps the shape readily. As small as N is, the joiners are a pain but they solder readily and using latex to bed the track to the base makes smoothing curves and final placement easy. I'm using a mass quantity of round model paint bottles and sockets to hold the track in place while the caulk sets and that seems to have w..ked well also.

Still no progress on the home layout front but I keep picking at the job lists and there is hope.

Todd, I think a stock of weathered cars will go in a hurry. The trick will be to plow any profit back into additional stock and material so you can expand your offerings. That makes the initial outlay a long term investment.  If you plan on doing multiple shows and can scratch out the capital to start with you can be in good shape in a reletively short time. Do understand the other requirements as from previous swap meet experience, Pa. is pretty strict about permits and sales tax collections  to the extent of sending officials around to the shows to check. You may find that the occasional causal vendor is ok, but it's easy to run afoul of officialdom and get in a jam. The organizers of the shows can frequently help with information on what is and isn't ok. Hope I haven't just reatated what someone else has done, but I just haven't had the time to catch up past posts.

Jeff, it's  good to see you mobile again. Amazing what refitting a few "unecessary" parts can do for reliability isn't it?

Gotta run, still lots to do to catchup jobs. At least the weather has broken a bit and we're in the 60's with no rain for now.   Catch y'all later, J.R.

Good Morning,

Robby
, make some business cards and set up a table and I think you’ll do fine.  I know you would make a killing out here in North East Ohio.

Todd, well I guess we have to make one more sacrifice for our country.

I saw and advertisement today for home loans; “no SSN required” doesn’t this sound like how we got into trouble in the first place?  You know in all the other countries I’ve visited (21 to be exact) I couldn’t buy much other than food or tourist items without one of their “SSN’s” or citizens ID.  Kuwait made an exception on cell phones if you were in the military.

Garry, I provide some Federal oversight on the railroads in my job, and I’ll tell you what some of them are a little shady.  I do see they get almost every waiver they ask for as I have to read the Federal Register weekly.  Shady meaning they want less employees and more freight and are willing to bend and break a few rules to do it.  Some of the railroads really take their jobs seriously and really care about the towns and people that live along the tracks others ignore the people and do what they want.  I think the most responsible RR I’ve worked with this year is the oldest in the country with their original name.  Not a MRR fan of them, but I like their safety practices. Oh and they still have steam engines on their regular locomotive rosters.

Jeff, nothing worse than poor gas station etiquette, ok maybe eating frosted flakes with your mouth open is worse.  I have a diesel and people will pull up to the only diesel pump and fill their gas tanks.  Had one lady walk over to me as I waited and point out the other 7 or 8 vacant pumps.  Thanks go fill your car I need diesel.

Ken, I bet you have a battery rebuild place close to you.  $68 isn’t bad; my 18v for lithium is almost $90 new at Home Depot.  I totally understand the limited budget, I would have a super hot layout if it wasn’t for a divorce and two kids in collage, LOL!

Some mixed nuts & raisons, please.

***Jim, I've seen coyotes from AZ to WA to GA and most points between. They are quite adaptable. I find them to be interesting, snarly little critters.

Spent less than an hour in the train room tonight. Made some more progress on the wife's (HO) layout, mostly playing with wallboard compound.

Have a good night y'all.

Evenin' folks!

Flo, just my usual decaf tonight.

I'll go sit in the back booth with Bill for a while.  He is getting to be very verbose these days.

Got a little time in the train room today.  Redid one of the large conveyors to be longer and then painted the second of the coal conveyors.  Also made the woodpile a bit smaller, cut some of the stuff down to size and split the thickest logs.  The guy across the street cut up the limb and managed to cut most into 25" - 28" lengths.  Since my stove can only take wood up to 21" long, I have a bunch of little short pieces to stack.....  Well, I shouldn't complain as it is free and is cherry.  Good burning, class I wood.  I also ordered 8 face cords of hardwood firewood tonight.  Part is for my son.  He can pay me back from the large tree he is having taken down the Fall.  It won't be ready to burn until February at least, so he can "borrow" some of mine in the mean time.

Gee Bill, been a long time since I have seen Royal Crown or Moon Pies....  Where did you find them?

'Bout time to call it quits for today.  Tomorrow night i am visiting a MMR's layout to take part in an operating session.  One of the gentlemen who is there owns a Model Railroad Manufacturing Company in the Southern Tier and has agreed to do a clinic for the Fall NMRA Meet.   Looking forward to meeting him.

Later!

Evening Madison IND!

Flow, big order of Fried Catfish, Green Beans, small slaw and pitcher of Beer and a frosted Monon Mug.

Tom, Jim, Chris and Robby P.Thank you for the kind words on the floor. Worked on it for another 4 hours today. Now that I have more down, starting to fine small aliment problems, nothing bad and can't be fixed. One problem I am having is cutting the title. It cuts easily, but I cannot keep the square straight. So Wednesday I am going to make a jig that will hold the title and the square so I can get a clean cut.

Lee All so thank on the kind words about the floor and Bull Dog Battery's. From what I can see they only have one store. Price on one of my battery packs was $68.00 with free shipping. Still a little step for my lack of budget. Plus, I have been running the 14.4 Volts battery's down to the point I have to twist the drill to finish. Today they seem to be lasting longer, plus I am getting close to being done.

Tiffy and the Floor Last month I was posting about how badly Tiff was getting around. She is a American Eskimo and will be 16 this coming February. Her rear legs would just collapse from under her, it was breaking my heart.Sigh I then posted about starting her on Purina for Older Dog's with Glucosamine. Folks, if you have older dogs you got to try this stuff! Wow She has been on the food for about 6 weeks now. She is running again and doing a little jumping! Other day coming back in, she jumped on the love seat then jumped over the arm of it heading into the kitchen!

Tiff checking out her daytime sleeping quarters.

See you folks Wednesday, time to watch NCIS on the computer and sand some baseboard.

Went to town this afternoon to get refills on some of my meds. While I was at the pharmacy some people who know about what I've been doing to the van stopped in and looked it over. On the whole they were impressed by the amount of work I had put into itYes. Most of them remembered what it looked like when it was a big rust ball. It also reminded me why I got out of building/restoring cars. Many were the times that I drove myself too hard and ended up paying the price for it for 2 or 3 daysDead. Personally I'm glad that it's over. It gives me time to get back to the layout and get my track anchored in place. On the flip side I did lose some weight over the past few months. Can't imagine how.Laugh

Afternoon, Zoe - I'll have a BLT and a RBF please 'n' thank you!

Yeah, been gone too long. Did get some reorganizing; started with the bedroom, lots more to go...

I have a prospector and some burros on the way. Cost me less than 14 bucks, so I'm happy - already painted, too. Though depending on how they look once I get them, I might make some modifications on some colors.

Jeff, I sorta figured they had heard the horn before. Whistling You're right - the Century look lots smaller without all the 'official' stuff on it. Wasn't sure, was that your trailer in the background on one of the pics? As for your 'fat broad incident' - Laugh

Rob, sounds like some good progress on your wife's layout. Thumbs Up You have coyotes? I always associated them with more wide-open spaces (thought your area had more trees, but I could be wrong there).

I love the way Bill T. has improved the appearance of the Diner (no offense to everybody else...). Now I can understand why he isn't in the Diner more often - probably didn't want to share with his friends...Whistling

Ray, I see that you approve of the change in the Diner's "looks" too, eh? Wink That Tango looks like a small phonebooth on wheels.Automobile Not counting all the other arguments/questions on 'em, I'd have to see some major reductions in price before I could consider one of those 'battery buckets'...

Todd, I bet you're glad that Brenda doesn't look over your shoulder while you're posting in the Diner, right? (Or else your medical coverage is all paid up...Surprise)

Chris, nice to see your 8-ball back again. Yeah Thanks for the link on that question I sent ya. Now on that half-track, you might have to register THAT one with Homeland Security and do a background check, but it might be possible. Smile, Wink & Grin

Yeah, Galaxy, I saw that piece on the news about the fracking. Scariest part was where the one guy actually (kinda stupidly, in my opinion) tests the water by trying to light it (and it definitely lights up!). Can't blame you for not wanting THAT in your backyard. Of course, after seeing the mess(tm) in Santa Bruno, Calif. with that gas line blowing, I wouldn't want one of those huge lines going anywhere close to my place. Think the green freaks should reconsider going back to coal-fired power companies (but that's just my My 2 Cents). How DID this thing get under my feet? SoapBox

Ken, looking mighty-fine on the floor there!! BowBow (And, might improve the CFO's attitude.. or not...). I'm sure you feel MUCH better about it being this far along. Thumbs Up

Lee - Amen, even though I wasn't in the Navy long enough for THAT coverage, so I get the other end of the O-stick.Surprise Our vets locally do have a clinic, but I think they still get to see the psychiatrist (those needing that) via videolink. Not the best arrangement (but then again, I guess you don't have to worry about catching anything from THAT)Oops

Moving right along....

Robby, maybe you could use the existing couplers and let the buyers add their own Kadees/whatever, or could you share a table with somebody (maybe somebody selling the freight cars, etc.)?

TSF, I think - given what your sister did to you at the show - it's only fair to attach those plywood sheets/signs to your trailer and haul them around. Of course, you want to be able to use the wood later for your layout, right? Smile, Wink & Grin

Nice, That is what I need. I could get through anything.

- or OVER it...Whistling

Gonna see about some more MRR stuff - I may put the P2K boxcar aside until after payday (and getting sturdier grabirons), and see about my Roberts Printing kitbash or my background warehouse in the meantime. Have been re-evaluating my getting sidetracked by too many other things, and wanna get back on a more consistently productive track (no, not half-track, sorry Chris!). Wink

About time to head on home. Will be back tomorrow, I expect.

Blessings and prayers,

Good afternoon. It's 91 and sunny. The high will be 96 and sunny.

Got the van inspected this morning and it's all legal now. It already had a bit over a quarter tank of gas (about 7 gallons, gauge read 1/8th) so I pumped in another 15 gallons to fill it up. The gas gauge is a little off. It shows full as 3/4's of a tank. That means I'll still have around a quarter tank when the needle hits empty. I can live with that. I had to drive through slow traffic from one end of town to the other, something which my nephew said always made it overheat. Of course when he had it the overflow on the radiator was gone  and the coolant was just running out on the ground. That likely had a lot to do with that. I fixed that problem so now the coolant runs over into the catch tank and is sucked back into the radiator  later. I have antifreeze in it and haven't lost any of it. I didn't have any overheat problem. In fact the needle never went higher than the low side of the normal area on the gauge. Went to Lowe's and had a spare ignition key made. No ride-on carts available as some kids had run them down, so I had to walk (slowly limp) halfway across that big store to the hardware area where they make the keys then go back halfway across the store to the checkout. Needless to say I was not a happy camper. When I pulled in at the service station to get gas there was a vehicle ahead of me that was slowly backing out. About 1.5 nanoseconds after I stopped to let that vehicle out some fat broad (broad describes her very well as she was almost as wide as she was tall) behind me starts leaning on her horn. As the vehicle ahead of me pulls out fat broad makes to cut around me and take the spot at the pump, at which time I hit MY horn. She stopped right where she was, most likely to search for her eardrums. A cop watching the whole affair almost fell over laughing! I got my gas and left. As far as I know fat broad didn't say a thing. As for what I'll be doing the rest of the day, that's likely to be a whole bunch of nothing as I'm too darn tired.

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Mornin',  time for a late breakfast. Zoe? Stack of pancakes, tub of butter, and jug of maple flavored corn syrup please...with a tall glass of OJ. As ULRICH said, "not Simpson."

Speaking of ULRICH: You've got good taste there pal...can't go wrong with a Tiger Tank! Thumbs Up

I still want one of these however...

nik.n:  I'll take you up on the "how-to" at a later date I'm sure.

Busy day in store for me today. I've been w**king on an article from this weekend, gotta try to hammer-out some other stuff THAT has been hanging, go to North Liberty (again) for an article THAT has been a source of frustration/irritation since March; then up to Cedar Rapids for a high school volleyball game this evening.

As for Ross's funeral, I think I've got a plan THAT should keep me out ahead of the procession, and allow me to get the two shots the Chief wants (which would necessitate me racing past the procession at least once...NOT cool...even with Chief's blessing). And, I've got ideas for other shots to try and get (before the formal service begins, and after at the dinner). The point of the project is to document the firefighters coming to remember their brother... and so shall it be.

Back at it...gotta make hay (or content for THAT Editor) while the sun shines. Which reminds me...it was "supposed" to be pouring down rain right now...instead, lots of sun, and pleasant/comfortable temperatures. Weather guessers must've guessed wrong again.

Have a good, SAFE day everybody...

Chris

Hello everybody ...

Ray has a great idea: Blueberry Panckes! ..... mmmmm ... I'll have some also, please. Sometimes, it's good to be a copycat.

Lee ... I understand you're soapbox remarks. I have not yet met anybody who thinks the health legislation is a good idea. The more we know, the worse it looks.

Electric cars is the topic of the day. I suppose, if you need a golf cart, they are a good idea, but a Chevy Volt costs $41,000, and that's absurd. .... We all know the most fuel efficient vehicle is the train, and the government has spent several decades putting them out of business. .... The government is doing way too much meddling in individual lives in my opinion. .... I could go on and on, but I'll end on that note.

The "start a conversation" worked and I communicated with Ulrich with it a little.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I'll have a short stack of Blueberry Pancakes, side order of Bacon, and lots of hot dark roast coffee to get me going today.

Another cool day outside here in the Finger Lakes.  Currently 59°F with a high of 63° later in the afternoon with partly cloudy skies.

So....  Should I go outside, w*rk on the wood pile?  Or stay inside and play with the trains????  Decisions, decisions!

Well for the moment I'm just going to enjoy breakfast!Big Smile

Galaxy.........I was going to spend about $300 - $350 on cars, which would be about 15-20 cars.  My wife doesn't think that will be enough to sell.   She thinks more cars.  Plus I have to buy couplers, detail parts, weathering powders, etc (that will be about $100 or so).    I was going to sell some weathering powders also, but I have to buy them (I'm getting  a good deal on them).   I've had people offer me cars to sell/demo with, and I am very happy with that!!!    I guess it's the $500+ that has me rethinking it.    I've had people tell me I will do good at the show, but the way my  luck has been.......I will be lucky to sell two cars!!

nik.n: Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet lookin' siren you've got there. If you go to the Layouts and Layout Building forum, and look for YES! MORE Signs for Your Layout thread, amongst the 20+ pages of signs are a bunch of Civil Defense emblems THAT would be perfect (possibly with some resizing) for your T-Bolt. I hope you kept good notes on how you built it. When I finally get my Quaker Oats complex built, I think one on the roof would look really good.

Thanks.

I have a bunch of mental notes on building this. Just shoot me a PM when you need it and I'll send you a pic-filled reply on how to build these. Smile

Morning all,

chilly and supposedly drizzly day here. Sun shining now.

This week filled with Dr. s visits all week.

Robby P. heres a few thoughts on the show: 1} figure out how to do what you want/need to on only $250.00 instead of $500.00 and see how well received at teh show. 2} many people at teh show will be buying RR cars and such that they may want weathered. Offer your services to weather their cars for a certain fee...say $10-15-20 depending onthe level of detail. That way THEY bear the cost of the RR Car and you only have a little bit OOP {Out Of Pocket} expense for the paint, and make a larger profit than buying the RR cars yourself that you don't if they will sell. 3} take donations of cars from teh guys here who are willing to part with for free with excess rolling stock {if any} and then you are free to detail and sell them for your own profit. Perhaps we guys can help out?  4} Over all, if you reduce your OOP expenses {the rr cars to weather}, and increase your pure profits {using your tallents} you may make out well. {LOL just don't take two or three days to weather a car LOL} Then you will know whether you have a profitable weather situation on your hands! Smile, Wink & Grin

nik.n. I won't get into a heated debate over the fracking here.Suffice it to say we err on the side of caution and Cabot Oil and Gas CO. jsut across the border has been fined numerous times and thousands of dollars for spills and leaks of fracking chemicals contaminating the environment. I already ceeded we love nat gas heat and hot water but don't want a mess in our back yards. SOme companies may do well, others don't care what they do.

Jeffrey W. I hope you get the van up and fully running soon. If you have, I have missed it being computerless and away for a few days.

WEll soon off to the dermatologist.
