Good Morning Folks,

Zoe, a bowl of cereal and a mug of hot coffee, please. I´ll be in the corner booth for some day dreaming.

I have not been posting for the last couple of days, as there is nothing much I can contribute these days. The situation is unchanged and I don´t think it will improve anymore. Petra and I would need a miracle to happen, and that would be asking just too much. We have to learn how to get settled in our fate.

I have not heard a word from the people in Tanzania for over a week now, so it is my feeling that it won´t happen. I am only a little disappointed, but as both of us prefer a more civilized region of the world, we don´t see it as a lost chance. My search for other opportunities has also led into the nirvana, so it is pretty tough to stay motivated. Seems as if our talents and abilities have no market value in the world.

Jeff - I am glad your van is progressing! That air horn is a blast Cool. 185 dB? Perfectly illegal here.

Have a good weekend.

Good morning.  Its a cool morning again,  Plus the geese have been flying over lately, so you know what that means!!

Not much planned today.  Maybe clean up some and head to the basement for a bit.

Todd.......I was going by some photos I found.    Its not a prototype car thou, close but not one.    I went over the whole car with a gray powder, to kinda dull the white down some.   If it doesn't sell, well its going to the train show with me Big Smile.

Here's a few pictures I was looking at.

Packer Thank you for the link. Only problem for me is my self imposed year cut off date is 1971. I know cars, an if it was a 1975 it would bug me. Yet, I will run steam engines besides GE AC 6000's and not think a thing of it?

185db!!!!!! Holy majoley!!! Jeff that babies like 2 feet from your ear holes!!! A couple blasts from that and it’ll blow not only your eardrums, but probably the hood off the van! The van does look pretty cool though.

That's why the deflection cone is so important. Most of the blast is directed straight ahead. I get some of the back blast off the hood but nothing compared to what the poor soul outside gets. There's also a couple of layers of steel between me and the horn. I've been using it for 8 or 9 years and all that's ever been said by the vehicle inspectors and the law is 'If they can't hear that they're deaf or dead. Either way they don't need to be on the road'. They're cool with it as long as I don't use it to excess. Besides, some of them still remember my 'ocean liner' horn.

Sir Madog

Jeff - I am glad your van is progressing! That air horn is a blast Cool. 185 dB? Perfectly illegal here.

Nothing wrong with it here as long as I don't go around blasting anybody and everybody with it. On average I use it 8 to 12 times a year.

I knew it. Trainshow.

Good Morning. Big Breakfast please. Over Easy on the eggs and wheat toast please with Blackberry jam. Yup coffee too, thanks.

Happy B-Day TSF!!!

Well it’s "the" anniversary today. I hope the “Preacher” doesn’t burn the Quran…., Kuran however you spell it. Seems kinda stoop-downish to their level. Besides, it wasn’t any more the Muslims fault than it was the Catholics fault my BIL was killed years ago. Anyway, just doesn’t seem like a Preacherly thing to do in my feeble opinion.

Robby- Actually of the three proto photos you posted, the first is the only one I really like. But I bet that thing would be tough. Maybe not as tough as it looks. But the last two, the white streaks just seem painted. I know, I know. They’re not. There just lacks a subtleness or…. Something. Don’t know. Like I said, or meant to say, It’s definitely not your work I don’t like.

Someone could do a absolute stunning replica of a Rembrandt (Artist. Not the toothpaste) but if I don’t like the picture he’s duplicating……I won‘t like the painting. I may like the work, just not the painting. But Plenty of other people will and that’s all that matters. Not everybody will like the same things. Well, except for Farrah's red swimsuit poster and the Parrot Sketch. (chuckling just thinking about it)

Somehing else I was gonna say…….. Can’t remember. Oh well.

I best get headin’ out to Mom’s house. The slave master… er, I mean, Brenda will probably show. They have the elevator open today because in spite of the fact there was an 80% chance of rain last night, they, Framers, insisted they would be in the fields today. So they opened up this morning. Well we got ¾ inch last night. That means, they will sleep in late, except for one or two, bring in the trucks they loaded after the elevator closed last night and say they won’t be getting in the fields. Then, when the elevator says they may close early, the farmers will complain and say, “well, if the fields dry by this afternoon we’ll be in them!!!” So, they’ll stay open, twiddle their thumbs all day waiting paying time and a half, for the frmers to call and ask if they are going to be open Sunday. ’Cause they “plan on being in the fields tomorrow for sure“. Even if it was raining then and a 99% chance it will rain all night and tomorrow. Farmers. Gotta love ’em. Actually, I do, came from a whole family of ’em. Have done a lot of farm work, still do. Still, gotta call a spade a spade.

Y’all have a Great Day now ya hear?!!!

Happy birthday TSF.Happy B-Day

Went to start my father's truck this morning and lo and behold all I got was a click from the starter relay. It worked fine last night. I took the clamps off, cleaned the posts and clamps with fine fine sandpaper. No difference. I hooked up a battery charger and checked the volts and amps. Fully charged. I tried jumping current directly to the starter with a wrench. Nothing. I checked the wires on the starter. Aha! Found a bad connection. Tightened it up then tried starting it again. Success!

Recalling the 9/11 attacks.

Nice of Ulrich to post his thoughts on 9/11/01 from Germany. Good to see others posting on 9/11, too.

My memories:

Shelley and I arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia on 9/9/01. We flew from Nashiville to Halifax on American Airlines changing planes in Boston.

On 9/10/01, we had a bus tour and learned of major disasters in NS. Halifax was the clostest major harbor to the Titanic, and many bodies for the ship are buried there. A WWI munitions ship exploded in 1917 destroying downtown Halifax and killing about 3000 people. We visited Peggys Cove on the Atlantic coast and learned about Swiss Air 111 which crased in the ocean near the fishing village in 1998.  The town was named after "Peggy" a little girl who survived a ship wrck in the 1800's.

We spent the next day watching the terror in New York City, the Pentagon, and in a PA field. It was awful to say the very least.

Some 50 trans Atalntic flights were diverted to Halifax from US destinations. Thousands of people were stranded in Nova Scotia including ourselves. The Canadians were very kind to all the stranded people. US flags came out and were displayed everywhere.

Flights home were non-existant for a few days. We decided we did not want to fly anyhow. Several days later we took VIA rail to Montreal in a refurbished 1950's all Budd train. It reminded me of the original California Zephyr with its dome cars. From Montreal, we too another all-Budd train to Toronto. We stayed in Toronto for two nights, and then rode Amrtak's "International" to Flint MI.

The Amtrak Train was delayed at the border. We and all other train passengers had to get off the train in Sarnia, Ont., board a bus, ride over the highway bridge, go through customs there, and return to the train in Port Huron, MI. That added 3 or 4 hours to that trip.

In Flint, MI, we rented a car. We drove to Nashville and picked up our car at the airport, and drove home. It was a long trip, but the trains were very nice.

Here is a photo I took from the VIA dome car shortly after departing Halifax:

Thought I drop in once more, before night closes in!

Janie, a bowl of traditional Hungarian Gulyas soup, and a tall glass of Löwenbräu beer! Thank you!

TSF - and a big for you!

For the gourmets among us, here is a recipe:

Petra´s Prize Winning Potato Salad

You need:

  • 3 lbs. potatoes
  • 1/2 lbs. pork sausage German "Fleischwurst")
  • 2-3 pickled gherkins
  • mayonnaise
  • mustard
  • 1 onion
  • salt & black pepper
  • sour cream
  • fresh parsley
  • Boil the potatoes in their skin, peel them and let them cool down (better done the night before)
  • Cut potatoes into thin slices and pieces
  • Cut gherkins, the pork sausage and onion into little cubes
  • Put 3 -4 tablespoons of mayonnaise into a bowl, add 2-3 tablespoons of sour cream and 1 tablespoon of mustard and blend thoroughly. Add gkerkins and onions. Add about 1/4 pint of the water from the gherkins. Add salt & black pepper to taste. Cut parsley into fine bits and add about 2/3. Stir thoroughly.
  • Put potato slices and pork sausage cubes into into a bowl and add dressing. Blend carefully, but thoroughly. It should have a creamy consistency, if not, add some more of the "gherkin water".
  • Give it time to rest about two hours before serving. Sprinkle the leftover parsley over it and serve.

Should be ´nuff to serve 4 people.

Enjoy with grilled sausages, steak, pork chops or wieners!

Afternoon folks!

Spent all morning and part of the afternoon out at Boy Scout Camp for the first meeting of the Camp Alumni Assoc.  In honor of a gentleman who just passed away a few weeks ago that had been at camp for close to 70 years, they played a tape I made back in the 1990s of him telling the "Legend of Bigfoot"  which is a camp legend of how certain landmarks supposedly came into being.  It has been part of the closing of a camp-wide campfire each week of camp for close to 60 years.  The legend has been passed down to others when Skip was no longer able to do it.  I managed to get him on tape, I think in 1996, to preserve the original for posterity.  In honor of 9/11 they also played on the camp PA system a recording of me (from the same collection) singing the Star Spangled Banner.....  We also had a memorial cigar smoking event ($10 for the privilege of sitting on the porch of the camp office and smoking a cigar) in Skip's honor.  We also shared some remembrances of the man.....  All his Scouting Honors, awards, and his uniforms were on display in the dining hall.

We then had a fantastic prime rib dinner for lunch!!!  I am still stuffed!  Following lunch we approved the proposed by laws for the organization, elected official officers, sat around and chatted for a while, and then went home.  I have been at THAT camp for 23 years.

Right now i could use a nap....  So I think I will stake out the back booth for an empty seat.

Later!

[edit] Looks like I have the top of the page.  There is lots of prime rib left over, so help yourself!

Flow, just a Dew in a Monon Glass. Simon 1966 treated me to lunch at Steak and Shake.

Simon, Crisp and Andrew and I went to the Boeing Train Show and as a whole I had a good time. Did not find one thing I was looking for, I was hoping to find some Monon engines but did not see a one. All so learned if they where selling new stuff, don't waste your time looking unless you don't live by a Hobby Shop like I do.

But just because I did not find what i was hoping for does not mean I did not find stuff to buy. Got 6 cars for $18.00.

The Burlington Hopper weathering is a joke. Looks like someones paint can was clogged. Robby P any tips on get the paint splatter off? Is the 5 bay hopper a coal car? For $5.00 for the pair, what can I say. Plus I am half blind anyway.

The Sinclair-Koppers Hopper is pretty nice for $3.00 and so is the flat car for $3.00.

Rio Grand is a BB kit, for $3.00. Bottom one is Inter Mountain Cylindrical Hopper kit I got for $4.00. Never seen one before, but looks like a good one.

If any of the folks here have read my posting about Brass Track and DCC you will understand why I think this was a great deal. In January I installed some Brass Track because I wanted to how bad the stuff was for my self. 8 months later I have not had any problems with the Brass Sections, none, not a single stall and no special cleaning.  I need two turnouts then I came across this.

I got 19 turnouts with switch motors for $10.00. I was hoping for 2 turnouts for $10.00. If you like the switch motors, let me know. I don't uses them.

time too work on the new rolling stock. See you all Sunday.

I was wondering why my nephew was being so quiet today. He usually has the stereo or some other noise maker going. The exhaust on his bike probably registers on seismic recorders in Japan. Speaking of his bike, he wrecked it late last night. laid it down in a turn. Fortunately he was only going 15 mph at the time. He laid it down on the left side. Tore away the handle grip, broke the shifter, broke off the left front foot peg, twisted the mirror, broke off the left rear turn indicator and scratched the paint a bit. Witnesses say he he was able to snatch the bike back up to a standing position without a problem and took off. He was able to get it home regardless of the broken shifter.  He got some road rash out of it but nothing serious. He is at this time on the internet digging up parts for his Honda Shadow 1100 Spirit.

Gooooooooooooooooooood Afternoon/Evening.

9-11-01, NEVER FORGET

Bucket of ice water please...just back from the first cornfield fire of the year. Mostly out on arrival, so our brush truck hit what was left while we formed a committee to figure out how to fire up the 1975 2nd-out pumper's front mounted pump.

Once THAT was accomplished, I hit some hot spots before we (the ad hoc committee) decided to run the hose up over the back of the Engine and go mobile (pump and roll). So, I'm on the tailboard, one hand on the grab bar, one on the hose as we rolled along at a leisurely 5 mph dousing hot spots and soaking down the perimeter.

For those gracious enough to have been offering up prayers for Ross Butterbrodt, I got an update when we returned to the station.

It is with deep regret that the Clarence Fire Department announces the passing of Assistant Chief Ross Butterbrodt. Ross died last night around 9 pm after a lengthy battle with multiple forms of cancer. Visitation is set for Tuesday evening with the funeral Wednesday morning. Continued prayers for his wife Lynne, and two boys would be appreciated.

I'll be in the back, trying not to disturb the snoozing RAY, and trying to get last night's football games written-up for THAT Editor.

FDNY 343, gone, but never forgotten.

Chris

Good Evening, Janie, I would like a 9-11 mug of coffee, please, and thank you.

I went looking for my flag lapel pin - was going to wear it today while I'm on-call. No luck finding it, so Murphy must be wearing it for me today, I guess. He'll probably bring it back come Monday or so...

Ulrich, don't give up on the miracle - small or large - just yet. Thanks for reminding us of all the other countries who lost loved ones on this date those years ago. The media (and most folks) sometimes forget that there were several/many countries represented in the losses of that day. Thanks.

CudaKen, if you (or other Diners) will be at the next Boeing show (in the spring, I think), email me. I couldn't make it today due to my on-call, but I've enjoyed the shows I went to (no matter how much or little I bought). I'll say that their food prices at the concessions there are... a tad pricey...Surprise Next one, I expect I will see about asking off further ahead. Oh, if you saw tables for "Paradise Express" (Scott City, MO), that's the place run by our MRR club member (Ron), and I recall that a few of the club members were going to be helping him out/selling a few items themselves there. Good score on the turnouts!

Ray, those camp legends were half the fun of Saturday night when I'd go camping with our troop (back in my days as a Scout (or as an Explorer). Thumbs Up

TSF - hope your Happy B-Day was a good one for you today. Thumbs Up

Jeff, that's 185 DB from your van's horn?? Man, that would drown out a gunshot OR a jet aircraft taking off over your head (by a little, anyway)! Wow Have you alerted the local police about your horn, so they'll be ready when some yahoo comes in wanting to complain? (And I'm sure there will be at least a couple, who drive like a yahoo also...) Can you put some kind of acoustic insulation under the hood/between the metal and the driver's compartment? Don't want the resonance bouncing around the inside of the van with ya.

Chris, I like that CNW diesel shot you posted. Bow Hey, how early did diesels start carrying radio antennas/antennae? Anyone know for sure? (Western RR's, if they were any earlier/later than others)

NS Joe - good to see you found your way back (as I did...). Yeah

Our district fair started today, but I'm amazed that they haven't put the tomato stakes with the "NO PARKING" signs stapled to them, out front on the street by my apartment building. Maybe their parking lots are making enough money that they don't care anymore. It'd be nice, anyway. Monday or Tuesday, I might mosey on over there during the day and get some cotton candy or a corn dog.

May be able to check the other dozen pages of posts I haven't yet, come Monday.

About time for me to head for home, finish up some odds and ends, and hit the sack just in case I get one of those 2 a.m. pages. Will be back tomorrow, I hope.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good evening gang!! To honor this day I would love a piece of apple pie. Ice cream of course too!! This is a rough day for me as a firefighter as we had a tragic wreck last night. A double decker bus loaded with people smashed into an overhead rail bridge that is only 10' 6" of clearance. Now this bridge is on a stretch of road that is so clearly marked Stevie Wonder would know that trucks and buses are banned. From flashing signs..strobes and a dozen other warning devices. Usually we get a dozen or so tractor trailers that hit it each year scattering everything from scotch to oranges across the road. Last night was wayyy different. I have been in almost 20 years and I have seen a lot of things that would make most run and hide. But pulling up to this at 230 in the morning made it feel like another world or time zone. Over a dozen ambulances...multiple heavy rescues...two medivacs and countless other units. A total of four people perished with over 25 critically injured. I am not going into injury details. Chris and Jeff feel free to pm me for details if you like as far as we handled extrication and shoring. This job..although very infrequent..really takes ya back..but you still have to stay focused and just do the job. Which really made me think about all the firefighters...police...port authority and ems agencies that were just "doing their job" 9 years ago today when they ran into those towers. I have found no other people on the planet besides the brave souls on the planes that I can call "real" men and women. Don't take anything for granted and enjoy the honor we have and the freedom we have in this great country. I don't mean to bring anyone down here with this post but that's what makes this place great. We have each other to listen too and shoulders to lean on when your up or down. Stay safe everyone and take a moment to pause for reflection.

A true friend will not bail you out of jail...he will be sitting next to you saying "that was friggin awesome dude!" Tim...Modeling the NYC...is there any other?

Hey guys

My brother and father went to Pensacola today, but I had to stay behind because I had work. I asked them to pick up something I saw last week, and by gosh, they actually got it. So I am now the proud owner of an athearn BB SD40-2 for $25 bucks. Only problem, it's a Chessie unit. I found out the other day that the BB is good for the ex-SLSF SD40-2s (I have an SLSF, but it's probably getting repainted and modeled as a normal BN) and the middle group of BN SD40-2 (phase 2a or 1b, don't recall which)so I had them get it. Once I order parts for it and the other SD40-2 I have, it's getting stripped and repainted *ducks for cover in case galaxy throws anything my way*

Also snagged 6 walthers PS2 hoppers for 25 bucks. One each, BN, CNW, UP, pillsbury, continental, and TLDX

Ken, doesn't the IM kit have a bunch of little pieces? IIRC, the 5-bay hopper is an either an Ornter hopper or a rapid discharge hopper (maybe both?)

Chris, sorry to hear about Ross's death

Jim, I think some steamers may have had radios, but I know a bunch of early diesels (GP/F7s) had them

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Cops know all about it. I've been using it for 8 or 9 years now and haven't gotten complaint one from them. It's the same type horn they use.

Quiet night in the diner!  I think Duke is not the only one sleeping.

Ulrich ... Thanks for posting the recipe. Wish we could get to Germany and accept your offer (a few weeks ago)  of sampling Petra's cooking.

I'll have a decaf and some key lime pie while I sit at the RC by myself. Maybe somebody will drop in and join me.

Steamed veggies, please.

***Chris, that's a gorgeous truck!

***Ken, neat layout pics!

***Garry, looks like you could just about reach out and touch that oncoming train. Could you feel anything (from air pressure) as it reached and passed your car? Just curious.

Finally made it into the train room, spending 3 hours worth on the wife's (HO) layout. Wired up a couple more street lamps, set in place 6 town buildings and a few little odds & ends. Good to make some progress on her layout, but all the work ahead still seems overwhelming.

Good Night, Y'all.

Good morning. It's 78 and cloudy. The high today will be 94 and there's a 40% chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms.

Not much planned for today. I hope to get some rest today. But I know that old man Murphy will pop up somewhere.

Good morning.  Its not as cool today, perfect weather for Steelers football.

Now the fire alarm is going off, so that means the wife will get up Grumpy.    The old house we stayed at here was across the street from a fire hall, and it would blow three times.  This one..........It blows about 10 times!!!   I will have to record it one day.   Oh....Its so loud, that we went for a walk one day, and it was going off right as we were walking by the fire hall, and I couldn't hear my wife talking, but I did see her lips moving!!!

Well on another note, not much planned for me today.  The game is at 1:00pm and Direct Tv is giving a free demo on the "sundae ticket".  Now I an see all of today's games.

I was also looking into doing a banner for the show.  We are thinking bout using vinyl for the banner, and vinyl  for the letters.  A friend of Jessicas owns a "cricket craft machine", and says we can use it for what ever.  That will be perfect for the banner.

Ken........Seems like you have a nice haul!!

Well I'm hungry, and I hope everybody has a good morning.

 Mourning Madison Indiana!

Flo, BLT and a Dew Please, yes I want a Monon Glass.

Todd The main reason I went to the train show is because Simon and his son's went. I enjoy Simon company, but I find his son's most entertaining. If I had to make the 45 minute drive by my self, more than likely would not have gone.

Gary  Do I wished I had stayed home and worked on the floor, well a little. I am to the point where I will start seeing the fruit of my labor. Like doing all the frame work of the layout, not fun but has to be done. Now I am ready to lay track!

Jim Good luck with me remembering to E-Mailing you about the next show! Heck I forget what Engines and Cars I have half the time!

Vincent You are right, there is like 4 spurs of little parts for the one hopper! I really wondering what I have gotten my self into with this kit. I don't car about small details that I can't see. Heck I have a Walther's tank car kit I have not built for 2 years now because of all the small parts. If I had looked closer I may have passed on this one. Looks like it could take a couple of hours to build.

Rob You are being way to kind about the pictures. I took the shoots from way to far back, that is why they are grainy.

Train Front It been two years now scenes I bought any Blue Box Kits (5 of the cars are Blue Boxes). So I sort of forgot about the bad coupler height. I don't have a one raised knuckle coupler! Bang Head I got one hopper on the rails, had to use 2 .015 and 1 0.10 Kadee washers on one end to get the coupler to where it need to be.

Catch you folks for lunch, got to go get more Luna for the floor.

                          Ken
