Good Morning,

Rob, sounds like an alternator died; I just went through all that “stuff” this spring.  The alternator died first causing me to completely drain the batteries. Batteries drained down so much I had to replace one.  Then about 3 months later the starter died.  It was a very expensive spring.  I would take the alternator to a shop where they test them for free and see if that’s the root problem since a bad regulator in the alternator can basically ruin a good day. If you were running it all day and the battery was dead that tells me the engine was running off the battery not the alternator.

Ken; is the motor loose?  Is this a can motor in the locomotive?

Cederstrand

Pickup died today in our driveway, right after a hay run. When I went out to drive it to the barn, dashboard lights & beeeeeep came on as usual, but not so much as a click from the engine or starter. Battery drained fast, but would recharge fine. Sound like a dead Starter to you guys???

Sigh Rob

Could be a bad starter, but even so there should be at least a click from the starter relay. A fast draining battery points to one of two problems on that front. Too small a battery or a bad battery or alternator. As for not even a click, I had that problem on my van. The cause was that the neutral starter plug harness had parted company with the neutral starter relay on the tranny. Reconnecting it solved the problem.

Good Morning. Coffee and a donut. I thought Hermie would be here by now. Just drizzle/misting right now. Real tired last night and didn't get up til 7am this morn. Hope I didn't bother anybody with my snoring. I have a real full plate today. Luckily first comitment starts at 10 so, I can change the oil in the truck first.

Speaking of trucks, Rob, is it in park or neutral? Not insulting your intelligence, but you'd be surprised. A few times I've had to go out to a dead car to wiggle the selector. It's not that the lever is in something other than P or N, it usually is,  but that sometimes they just don't set the way they need too to catch the switch. Do the lights dim at all when the key is turned? Since the lights don't dim, it does sound like the solenoid to me, but is essentially a starter anymore (EDIT: Depending on what you have of course). Could be the realay as well. BUT! Check the terminals at the battery for cleanliness, tightness and a good connection first. 12v will jump no gap. (Unless you don't want it too. again,). But, should at least click, if the lights stay lit, though in my experience, don't go solely on "shoulds" and "shouldn't's" See if it's got one of them big fuses may be blown. There was some vehicle, and I can't remember what it was, that if something wasn't, off, closed, told it was loved....something, and it wouldn't let the starter engage. Can't remember now. If I think of it and you haven't got the truck fixed, I'll pop in and say it.

Have a Great Day!!!

 Mourning Madison IND!

Flow, I feel like eating, how about 4 scrambled eggs, hash browns crispy, bacon, toast and a big Dew in a Monon Glass!

Sigh Rob

I don't understand this part of your question. So was the battery dead, and you put a charger on it and it started or did not start?

Few things I would check or could be.

1 Make sure cables are clean and tight.

2 Try starting it in neutral if it is a Auto. Could be a bad neutral safety switch.

3 If GM say in the late 80's to 90's, if you have a extra key try starting it with the other key. GM installed chips on there keys so the vehicles could not be hot wired. I have seen more than one bad key.

4 Try jumping the starter relay from under the hood. All so make sure the wires are clean and tight.

5 Check the wires at the starter as well.

6 Try wracking the starter with a hammer. If it starts, it is time for a new starter. If it doesn't start, still might be time for a new starter.

Wish I could be of more help.

LSWrr Not sure what you mean about the motor being lose. Do you mean shaft play up and down, back and forth?  Motor is a modern style Athearn RTR motor. Wit me being able to see the brushes I don't know if it would be called a can motor.

Sawyer Yes, I did spot you new Mopar Logo.

Floor Wars Sure glad I had not laid any tile yet. Seems my wife has changed her mind again. Carpet need's to be replaced in the hallway. I asked her if I could use the tile, she said no, she wanted carpet. While I was fighting with them about the Law Mower she was back in flooring. When I found her she was talking with a young lady that worked there. For some reason when another woman suggested tile it sounded like a good idea. When I suggested it, it was stupid and would look cheap? Bang Head

Reason I am glad I had not started, more than likely the tile in the hallway would lined up with the kitchen. Other reason I waited, I want to make sure the Luna did not start squeaking. One section where the concrete patch is has a small one. I will fix that today.

 See you all at lunch.

Morning guys

Coffee please

The new heater really heats up the bathroom quickly compared to the old one, of course then again it's not 5* outside with a draft blowing everywhere.

Got to go to the dentist yet again today. I should be able to get and wear home my new partial plate today if it fits like the wax mock up did. It will then have to sit for a week in mouthwash while the acrylic chemical "taste" leaches out of it so it is palatable for me to wear without wanting to vomit. It stinks when it comes out of its sealed package and as I told the hygentist one day "it tastes like it smells" and she said "eeww!" I said yes it does. SOme may be able to handle the taste but I cannot. The wax mock up I could easily tell fit far better than my old one does and isn't loose like the old one so maybe it won't come out of my mouth when I laugh out loud, LOL. Geeked

Then it's off to the grocery store for some Certified Angus beef at $1.99 a lb, your choice of 3 kinds of cuts! That's cheaper than hamburger! Walmart can't beat that price, and their selection is not as nice as the grocery store's anyway.

Robby P. I guess I can forgive you for defacing a Chessie car as you do do weathering so well. I will let you off easy this time, besides I wouldn't want to get in trouble for picking a fight with someone on the forum and be suspended from it's use! Wink

My cold sems to be getting better which is good news. Still have a bit of chest congestion but cough suppressant cough syrup seems to help with that.

Well, off and running to get my day started

HAve a great day

Good morning. It's 75 and partly cloudy. The high will be 94 and you guessed it, partly cloudy.

Not sure what I'll be doing today. Likely to be whatever comes up. Had another bad night last night. Didn't get much sleep so I'm not feeling at all good this morning.

Ken, I was wondering if the motor was wobbling when running and not a bearing, you could always pick up a replacement motor for it.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, I see you fired up the stove this morning...  I'll have the #2 special, eggs over easy, bacon, home fries, and a double order of sourdough toast to go along with the dark roast coffee in a FGLK mug.  Oh, and bring over the jar of strawberry preserves.  (looks at counter)  What's this?  Cap't Crunch with Crunchberries?  I haven't seen a box of those in years.  I used to love Cap't Crunch cereals.  Hey!  The box is empty!  Huh?  Oh, Chris ate the whole box at one sitting?  THAT would explain why he is passed out in the back in the same booth with Todd and Duke.  The Three Amigos do make a lot of noise cutting wood don't they?

Ccccccoooollllldd here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  Was 57°F outside this morning when I got up.  The high will maybe get up to 65°F later this afternoon.  Damp and drizzly out there as well.

This morning I will be w*rking on transferring the MLK Bank account to a different financial institution.... After THAT, I may get to look over some of the SS LTD kits I got delivered yesterday.  I fully intend to actually go hide downstairs in the trainroom for a good part of the day!!!

Rob, I too thought of the alternator going bad.  Had it happen a few times.

Galaxy, glad you are felling better today!  Probably the Cod you had yesterday was good for you.........Whistling  (Ducks flying objects and runs to the door...)

Later!

I'll also have coffee and donut in the corner booth. Today, it's good the corner booth is so large.

Been working on the floor and I am now to the hallway. Time to start cutting carpet, hope a box cutter does the trick.

Coffee in a  UNION PACIFIC  mug, please.

Thanks for the all the good suggestions folks. Much appreciated! The pickup is a 2500, plane cab with 8' bed. Book says it's a 2000, but sticker on truck door says 99, for what that's worth. Already tried neutral and the column wiggles, same thing as before, lights come on, no clicks or anything from engine. Tried the hammer trick to starter, too. (I've had alternators go bad in other vehicles over the years and do not suspect that in this instance, but I'm not a car guy so who knows) Related fuses are OK, both small ones inside vehicle and larger types in engine compartment. Need to jack it up a bit and check the wires, perhaps this evening.

Fortunately, we can get hay delivered and that is primarily what we use the truck for. So, if it has to sit a while, no problem. I'm not a mechanic and it takes me a lot longer to work on something than it would someone who knows what they are doing.Confused

Nothing new on the MRRing front yet.

Have a good day y'all.

Hey guys

I went epaying again today. Almost got an athearn RS3, but got out bid with less than a second. I think I got botted. Oh well. Hopefully athearn will release another run before I turn 40. The unit would have required adding the angled number boards, and some sort of box in front (long-hood foward) of the cab. The seller of the beat-up SW10 offered a full refund, so at least it's not a total loss.

Chris, Doesn't look to hard to convert it to look like a berwick from the sides (adjust the sill, change stirrups and lower the car itself). end ribs are another story. Just have to bend some more steps and find a brown close to this brown. Nice bit of info they were assigned to paper service though. Got a bunch of cars that should be assigned to that now. Looks like I should have a paper mill and a sawmill on my "to-be-designed in 20 some odd years" layout. Now I should get some woodchip gons to use between the 2. My "looks right" envelope for cars and engines is vary different. Engines I usually want them to be very accurate, cars I'm a bit less strict on. I haven't hunted through my existing roster for foobs yet, but new cars are going to have to be fairly close.

Ken, If S scale (1/64) had more variety find cars for them would be easy. personally I'm trying to find some cars for the 75-85 era for my open autorack. The Fresh Cherries cars cost about that much, ut finding them is the hard part (and most would work for an autorack). I would like to use the Atlas fairmonts and cast them since I have a bunch of the colors that came on them already in spray cans. Right now I have enough of those $1 walmart 69 Camaro SS's to fill it, but I don't think they would have been carried with the tops down.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Goooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Afternoon/Evening, bucket of coffee...to go, gotta head out for Friday Night Under the LIghts (football) shortly.

VINCENT: Yup...I'm with ya on THAT... my locomotives get a lot more attention than the freight cars. But, even then, I can live with an Athearn geep's hood being "a foot too wide." I don't put every detail on, but hit the biggees: beacon light, better horn, appropriate radio antennae, extended cab window, lift rings, grab irons, drop steps, snow plow, the CNW "gong" bell, MU cables, and coupler lift bars. I'm sure the new Athearn GP15-1 is miles ahead of the Walthers (pre-Proto 1000 or whatever) version, but detailed and weathered...the Walthers is just fine by me, even though it's missing the extra vent louvers CNW put in above the engine room doors. From normal viewing distance...I'd about wager THAT isn't even noticible.

JEFF: For some reason, I keep expecting to see a large possum on the side of your van...Whistling Lookin' good, Sir!Thumbs Up

RAY: Don't worry about them Crunch Berries, I'm sure the Cap'n is making up another batch at this very minute. Cedar Rapids is "officially" known as "The City of Five Seasons." The fifth season is supposed to be "fun." Whatever. It also used to be known as "The City of Five Smells" thanks to Quaker, National Oats, Wilson Packing Co., Penford, and Cargill. Quaker isn't bad... it was kinda nice walking around Cedar Lake (CNW North Yard on the west side, CCP yard along the south) and enjoying the smell of Crunch Berries. Dinner

Maybe the Cap'n will dispatch a blue RBL boxcar full of Crunch Berries to the Diner...

Five bells, gotta head out. I get to cover Iowa City West High School tonight, against their bitter rival Iowa City, City High. They have "the battle of the boot." Winner gets a boot, apparently. With cloud cover building, I'm expecting a "mudder" with plenty of un-wanted rain. StormStormStorm

It wasn't in the forecast this morning but we have heavy rain pouring down now. Just got this coming across on my weather station.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms will move northeast between 10 and 15 mph. Some of the affected locations include...Toledo Bend Reservoir to Leesville...near Echo in eastern Rapides Parish as well as near Kinder and Oberlin. Occasional cloud to ground lightning and brief moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible in some of the storms.

Welp, Community days is tomorrow as well as my 17th birthday. The Farmall has a large american flag on the back, and I've got enough fuel to get to town. I'm going to stop and get some more gas before the parade.  Maybe if I'm lucky, I'll post some pictures of the Old girl on the parade route.

And hopefully tomorrow I should get a muffler and tail pipe for my Jeep. Had to ride the bus today because some of my buddies cut it off. I shouldn't of let them talk me into it. Does sound kinda cool though.

Chris,  Nice work on the CNW Geep! I here you on that Athearn Genesis stuff. I have a BN F45 and an MP 60' box from them. They are really nice. So much so that my F45 has to be my favorite loco, with the factory-lit beacon and etched metal fan grilles. I haven't seen one of their GP15-1s up close; but I'm eaglerly awaiting them to announce BN ones (aquirred via the SLSF). BTW, here's a pic of the CNW ones:

I'm hoping I can get some of the Genesis F7s or a 2nd F45 (with soundtraxx sound decoder) for Christmas. If they announce BN GP15-1s by then I'll go for those instead

As far as detailing, I do grabs, hoses, beacons, plows, and antennae. Haven't done Mars lights on my Ex-Q units yets. I'm still mulling about how to change the brake wheel on BB SD40-2s so they can match the mega majority (the 6 SLSF untis were the only ones with nose wheels) of BN SD40-2s

If you can read this... thank a teacher. If you are reading this in english... thank a veteran

When in doubt. grab a hammer.

If it moves and isn't supposed to, get a hammer

If it doesn't move and is supposed to, get a hammer

If it's broken, get a hammer

If it can't be fixed with a hammer... DUCK TAPE!

Evenin' folks!

Flo, just a decaf for me.  I'll go sit in the back booth and relax for a bit.

Managed to get a little time to assemble another conveyor for the stone quarry.  Hopefully these will do what I want and not look too modern.  Little by little........

Also went over to my son's house and hooked onto the wood splitter and towed it home.  Of course I had to spend some time while I was there with my two favorite little girls! Big Smile  Truck appears to be running fine, no more crunch, crunch, crunch.

After getting a couple of spam phone calls (Yes I'm on the federal do not call list......) so I decided to check out Roadrunner's new Caller ID on PC (and Mac).  They do it through AIM from AOLThumbs Down.  Haven't used THAT for at least the last 2 computers and the G5 I use most of the time I bought back in 04......  So I downloaded the newest AIM for Mac from them and then had to spend a couple hours trying to figure out what I had used for the screen name and password.Grumpy  Then i spent another hour looking through a whole pile of new bells and whistles RR has and updating my account with them.  I have now blocked 2 numbers that are constantly calling my house (I have never picked up on them as they are from very questionable groups looking to scam people).  I always check out numbers I don't know before I pick up the phone.  Heck, half of the ones I do know, I don't pick up on.  I figure they can leave a message or call me when I feel like answering the %^&*% thing!

Ken,  Gee.....  I would have a lot of difficulty deciding whether to stay home and w*rk on the floor or go to a train show.....   Hmmmm  lets see which would it be.......  One is fun and the other?????  Leans over and whispers.... No brainer guy!  You can finish the floor some other time........  The other half?  well just tell her you don't have something you need to finish it right now (like patience......).  You'll think of something....Smile, Wink & Grin

Hope you all have a great night!

Howdy. Loks like I’m back on the 13 hour days. I kinda like those couple 8er’s. I just heard some thunder and it has been raining. Looks like Hermine is here after all Garry. Thought maybe you guys was gonna hog it all there for a bit.

Robby- Hopper looks good. Only thing is, my opinion now, I don’t think I’m too keen on the white. Yep, it may be realistic for what it hauls, just something about it doesn’t really do it for me as prototypical and accurate as it may be. The rest to me though, looks your usual great.Thumbs Up

Rob- Eh, real hard to say without seeing if your getting 12volts to the main starter post and to the solenoid with the switch thrown. I have a jumper switch but that won’t do you much good there. Quick and easy way to isolate the starter from all other stuff though. You probably could pick one up at a local parts store. They come in handy for all sorts of other stuff too. I would not recommend the old screwdriver trick. Sometimes things like that cause much more expensive repairs to computers. Often not, but with my luck…..Sigh

Speaking of cars, originally I was going to set my layout in the ’70’s. Music was good, the beer was too...Indifferent….er….so I’ve been told….Whistling . But, the selection of vehicles was slim so I decided to move to the present day instead of a bit farther back in time. I can still use some of the cool cars from the era that they have easier than if I went back to the fifties.

A Possum??

185db!!!!!! Holy majoley!!! Jeff that babies like 2 feet from your ear holes!!! A couple blasts from that and it’ll blow not only your eardrums, but probably the hood off the van! The van does look pretty cool though.

Don’t know Ken’s wife, but I’m also bettin’ he goes to the train show to……..CLEAR HIS HEAD! Yeah, that might work. But, like I said, I don’t know his wife.Laugh

Well, better hit the hay, another long day tomorrow when I too will be working on a floor.

Hey guys! Guess who's back...

FINALLY got my computer back. Don't feel like talking much, maybe I'll do that tomorrow if I have time before/after w**k.

But for now, I'll share this for those interested. Just a short video of railfanning in Bay Head and Point Pleasant from about a month ago. Enjoy!
