Afternoon folks!

Chloe just a RBF to tide me over until supper.......

GalaxyThumbs Up  Hope you kept the phone # for the second guy!

Joe, glad they caught the guy!  Also hope there is some justice for the family...

Heard a rumor yesterday out at camp.  It was confirmed in tonight's local paper.  Front Page even!  One of the last old RR Bridges in the area got taken down in a tractor trailer accident yesterday on Rts. 5 & 20  West of Geneva.  It was a bridge from the Northern Central Division of the PRR.  Story here: http://www.fltimes.com/articles/2010/07/01/news/doc4c2cc75e8d9fd764227613.txt  BTW The George Leet mentioned in the story was a guitar student of mine about 25 years ago.  He is a Teacher in Rochester.  His son Jon is an Eagle Scout and was one of my kids at SciTek Camp for a few years.  Nice kid!  Well, just a nice family actually.  The mom is a Methodist Minister in the area.

Tally for the day....
      Lawn - finished
Trimming around tents at camp - finished
Get materials together for Troop one MB Visit - finished
Trailer - not going to happen today - tomorrow probably.
Turnout - after Troop meeting I hope......

Best get a move on, catch you later!

Galaxy,

I had to laugh at your comment about how young the Doctors sometimes look. Back in 1993, I was feeling really strange, so I had my neighbor drive me to the Emergency Room. When he pulled up to the doors, I jumped out and started to go through the sliding doors when my first heart attack hit big time,  and down I went. When I awoke sometime later, the first thing I saw and heard was this kid sticking his head through the curtains and asking how I felt. My first thought was "Why are they allowing paper boys in here?" Turned out he was the cardiologist, and a very good one.

My youngest nephew has been a physician for over 12 years now with a growing family, and every time I see him, I can't believe it as all I see is that little kid with the runny nose who needed his diapers changed.

Bottom line, where the hell does the time go?

Vincent, thanks. That'd be one sweet car to model!

Well, got the supplies for the town, now I have the replacement foam drying in place.

I also have my summer reading books. We have to read The Heretic's Daughter and also a book by Pat Conroy called the Water is Wide

My mom also bought everyone a book and I got this one on sale for $10:

There's some awesome pictures in it and plenty of info.

Hey guys, Just punched out of work for the day.
Rob, sorry about all the missing stuff on your car. Buffing a car isn't bad once you get the hang of it.
Well, I'll have the dinner special today. Thanks a bunch. Oh, before I forget, those of you in Illinois, be ready for fresh sweet corn. Might be coming in by next week.

Well Rob the good part is you got the car back and hopefully it runs ok. Also they didn't weather it for you. We got one back from a body shop so full of dust from sanding that we couldn't get it all back out. First time we drove it, it left a dust cloud so big they black flagged us thinking the engine was going. J.R.

Robby P. I'd be tempted, oh so tempted, to take it to the media about the repair shop doing {or not doing as the case may be} the repairs on your wife's car! I resisted saying that earlier, but now....man oh man! 3 months???  and they didn't even finish the job correctly?  get real!

Well guys the car goes back in October for the buffing, unless we keep finding problems.   We have contacted the news people and we will see if they want to do anything.

One good thing is, that the MIL is coming next week and she drives the same year/model Sonata.  We will compare and see what is what.

The sad thing is......Allstate told us they are having to fight the body shop for another customers car!!!

 Evenin' folks!

Flo I'll have the Strawberry Pie al la mode and a cup of decaf.

Just got home from Troop 1.....  These guys are a riot.  Great kids to w*rk with if you keep a sense of humor.... All the Scouts in the Troop are classified as being handicapped in one way or another.  Many are able to understand a concept, but can't come up with the specific word for it.  The requirement we did tonight was to name 4 departments of a railroad.  I started by giving them a handout from the MB book listing the usual ones.  The MB book lists 10 depts. from Management to Sales, Legal, Finance, public Relations, etc.  I went through each one trying to relate it to common things they would already know.  Then in groups of 2 they had to list and tell about 4 different departments.   BLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBsssss............... We got there, just took a while.....Laugh

3 more scouts earned the Merit Badge Tonight.  2 others have 2 items left to do (Yes they have to meet the standards!)  I will be visiting the Troop out at camp in a couple weeks, and hope to have time to sit down with a couple of them and possibly finish it up.  The best part of the evening is when one of the older Scouts was informing me that trains don't use cabooses anymore.....  So I turned to the rest of the scouts and said, "Hey, anyone know where FRED is?"  and several replied in unison, "At the back end of the Train!"  Does my heart good!Big Smile

Robby, I would keep my lawyer in the loop on the whole thing with the car.......  Write down every conversation and date it.  Verify everything you can as to what, when, and where.  Who said what etc.  If there any witnesses to some of the things they have said to you folks, make sure you write down their names.

Barry, careful with those fireworks!  Remember, "What doesn't kill you, makes you hard of hearing".

Have a few more things to do tonight, so I'll catch you all later!

Mark (Hoople) ... Great to see you back. All those mrr problems are fixable one thing at a time.

Robby ... You may have been much better off if the car was totalled.

Hope the Canadians had a great Canada Day!

Hi Garry,

Yes I did have a fairly good day. The weatherman had said cloudy all day but by noon it was sunny, hot, (85F) and humid.

I did manage to get the evestroughs cleaned out which will hopefully stop the rapidly rising water in the pond next time we get a downpour. I had to go out last Sunday in the middle of a  thunderstorm to drop the submersible sump pump in otherwise the fish might have escaped.

I didn't get the harbour painted but I did fool around mixing up some paint and I may go with a dark blue mixed with a little green. Not the colour I am looking for but it should look ok.

Had Mum over for dinner to celebrate the day. She is doing remarkably well for a 96 year old.

It's a little noisy here right now as some neighbours are setting off some fireworks.

See you tomorrow,

CN Charlie

Good evening. Another day of the usual and the usual unexpecteds. Good news is, I just poked my head in the train room and the layout, or what there is of it, is still there. So.., I got that going for me.

Jeff- That is the same powder set I have. Maybe not as many now that I think of it. I'd have to re check but I think so. I like them much better than using paint. Much easier for me. I think you'll like them too if you haven't used powders or that brand.

Only thing about powders I found the hard way, the transfer from one place to another is phenominally easy. If you're not careful the stuff gets everywhere. I probably still have some in my right ear if I could see there. Maybe I'll have Brenda check it out. Maybe I'll just have her check me out for powder..........Big SmileMischief

Evening ya'll

Happy Canada day to our northern neigbors

Chris, Coupla showed up today. Gonna start the cutting tomorrow.

Sawyer, Yeah, but it's a 3 road only car. ATSF, NP, and BN had those Conditionair hoppers. Here's an article from when they were first introduced: http://www.springerlink.com/content/81804128304648h5/ They were very difficult to keep clean and the insulation on shape. I probably won't model the refridgerator unit since I can't find any sort of drawing and eyeballing it wouldn't look right. The hard part would be weathering it, but I want to find a few undec athearn ACFs as starting points

Robby, Thanks for your tip on the elmers glue. It's kind of hard to tell in that shot, but when I dug for pictures of similar cars earlier in life, it shows the yellow is under the white (insulation that got dirty really easy). SO just reverse the yellow and the grey. probably could get the black spots around the failing insulation with some black powder. I'm gonna try several experiments to see how they turn out.

As for your real car. 9 weeks and a bunch left unfinished. Out of curiosity, how much was the car worth and how much was the damage estimated.

Barry, Ouch on the RS2 and the faulty switch.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

 Good morning.

Gotta go in to work today, and then a looong weekend.

Ray......We thought about taking them to civil court, but just not sure yet.

Garry.....We tried to tell them that from the beginning.  The problem is they don't really total cars anymore.  I was wondering what they (Allstate) would do if the damages (new ones) go over the $10,000 mark.

Vincent.....The car is worth $10,000 and the damage (right now) $9,051.00   They told us the car will be totaled at 80% damage, well do the math.   The said they didn't total the car, because of hidden damage popped up.  Before the estimate was $5,000.....Then $6,500...Then $7,000...Then now its $9,051.00...   They just wanted more money, and more money, etc....  Once they got to the $7,000 the car was painted, and half of the car was fixed.  They couldn't go back and total then.   If they did the estimate right, and tore the car apart before repairing it would have been totaled!!

Robby- Unfortunately it sounds like you are the victim of one of the oldest body shop "scams" around. By law, at least in Illinois, an insurance company cannot tell you where to take your vehicle. They may recommend a place, but they can't "tell" you where to take it. They can ask for several estimates but they can't make you get more than one. They may and can use their own adjuster to determine damage, and that is a common thing because of just what you have experienced. What the insurance company can do, is choose the shop with the lowest bid. Therefore you run into what you just have, and I did back in 1989 or '90. A body shop gives a low bid and under shoots the labor and the cost of parts to get the job and then blasts the insurance company later for a revised estimate in "new" things they've found. Such as the price of parts has gone up, or couldn't get the part and had to get a more expensive one to get the job done, and of course the old more damage than thought when they got into it. Things they have a right to change by law to protect themselves in the event of those things actually happening, hence the term "estimate", but use to get the bid and once the work has started and the company owes money to the shop, they usually go for the revision because they aleady have a sizable amount in it already, aaaaand if they refuse the additional work, then the shop blames the insurance company for not paying and the customer walks out fuming at the insurance company and the shop smells like a rose to the customer. All the while holding the car until someone  pays and the customer sometimes does still blaming the insurance company while the shop takes the cash and bids on another job, starting the cycle all over again. A good bodyshop generally never has to revise an estimate. Sometimes yes they have to, things do happen, but if they know what they are doing they know what to look for and generally include the possibilities in the estimate and hope the actual cost is less.

Like I said I found this all out by talking to the State board of insurance back then over a car I had with some vandalism in the form of a couple healthy scratches down the hood and into the plastic grill. I got my estimate and the insurance company said they like to have two or three estimates and they would like one from a particular shop because they did good work for them in the past etc. I knew of the shop and said I didn't want them because their work was shoddy and didn't last, but got one anyway I knew I could have it fixed at any shop I wanted. Should have known more about the law before I jumped because you guessed it, they picked that estimate which was about half what the others were and refused to budge. I was super duper p o'ed. Talked to the insurance company and they said yes I could take it anywhere I wanted but they only have to pay the amount they for the shop they chose. I pointed out the cheaper parts and asked where they could get them from and asked how they could do certain things, and they did get a revised estimate from them, but it was still significantly cheaper and I couldn't get the car done at a good shop without a bunch out of pocket. That's when I called the SBOI and they sympathized but said since the insurance company did not require, or tell me my claim would not be submitted unless I went to a certain shop, they legally just "suggested" or "asked" and I should not have gotten more than the bid from the shop I wanted to do the work. Real nice lady as I recall, she said she gets these calls all the time and then told me what happens about the underbidding and says some shops work the system and unfortunately, in order to protect the legit events, others have use it to their advantage. I was mad enough to just take the money and I never did get the scratches fixed, nor the grill. It was just cosmetic anyway. Needless to say I dropped them and went back to State Farm. Funny thing, I lleft State Farm because this place was cheaper. They raised premiums in the 5 years I was with them that when I went back to State Farm, State Farm was HALF what they were.Banged Head We've had a few claims and, like you, no problems at all with the insurance company. "Take it where you want" Is what my agent says.

So I feel for you bud, though my experience was nothing like yours, I can imagine your frustration. At least your Insurance agent was with you that means a lot really. Some are better than others and it sounds like you have a decent one. We do too.

Good Morning All,

Just a coffee in my travel mug please. Loading/unloading, chasing bits today - the usual.

Robby - I sympathize and know you're right about what happened but don't think it's worth pursuing in court unless you can get an attorney to w..k on contingency which then means you lose 30% or more off the top. Better to threaten legal action and use that as leverage. Anything you give in writing to the bodyshop you should type and add a cc for your attorney even if you don't intend to use one. Gets them thinking...... On the buff out, modern paint is usually hard enough to sand and buff in a couple of days. Be sure to keep a close eye on the repaired areas for paint shrinkage from excessive bondo usage. This will show as sanding marks and crosshatching under the new paint especially after the car has been in the hot sun. Make sure if you see any that you bring it to the attention of the bodyshop immediately so you establish that it's their doing. There was no good reason the car wasn't buffed out and finished when you picked it up except for them trying to hide something.

   Gotta run.  CUL, J.R.

Good morning. It's 74 and cloudy. The high today will be 86 with a 50% chance of rain.

There was an 80% chance of rain yesterday bit what we got wouldn't fill a thimble. If I hadn't been outside at the time I never would have known there was any rain. Maybe we'll have better luck today, but I'm not holding my breath. I placed an order with Walther's yesterday for an 8 ounce set of weathering powders. Now that I've tried them I really like them. The cars I've done over the last few days were done from a very small sample packet. They don't wash away or wipe off the way artist's chalks do.

Good morning ...

I posted some 4th of July weekend pix in wpf.

I saw the thread with custom paint jobs, and I know I've seen some nice ones here too.

Jeff's nice custom paint scheme sort of reminds me of EMD's 1962 scheme on GP30 demonstrator units. Photo is a Bachmann model.

 Good Afternoon,

it is a sweltering 100 F outside - most uncommon for our area. I feel pretty lousy in this type of weather, given that the old ticker does not want to tick the way it should.

A belated "Happy  Canada Day" to all our friends living north of the 49th parallel!

Nothing specific to report -which is a good thing in these days of turmoil.

Zoe, make that a tall glass of fresh lemonade - Grandma style, for me please.

Y´ all have a good day!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe, just a blueberry muffin and my dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug.  Please and Thank You!

Currently 70°F outside here in the Finger Lakes with a high around 75 later this afternoon.  Lots of good lighting from a big yellow ball up in the sky as well....  Should get through another day without running the air conditioners.....WinkSmile

I am planning on taking it easy most of the day.  Probably will putter around with a couple projects, but not much of anything THAT has to get done.  Pretty much caught up with things for the moment.

I'm with those guys!  After my wife died almost 23 years ago, I was faced with dealing with the business offices of a couple of hospitals.  One was a nationally known "top of the line" place in Ohio (Cleveland).  They couldn't get the bill figured out for over 6 months!  During that time I continued to make small payments in good faith on the bill (Legally THAT was all I had to do).  They finally sent me a bill for several thousand $$ and immediately took me to collection for non payment! Grumpy  We had several phone conversations which led nowhere.  I started writing some really terse letters to them, put down at the bottom cc: my lawyers name, esq.,  and sent a copy to my lawyer.  He called as soon as he got the letter and asked what he should do in the situation.  I told him to file it in my file and we'll see what happens.  In one of the letters I mentioned I had a signed statement from them that they would accept NYS Blue Cross/Blue Shield as full payment for the account....  They responded quite quickly with an "Oops" letter which was soon followed by a corrected statement of my account.  It seemed THAT now they owed me a few hundred $ in overpayment....Big Smile

After 3 months I had not received the refund.  I placed several rather terse phone calls to them and each time was told I would get the payment soon.  Six months later, I still didn't have the $.  My youngest son (The one at Argonne Labs) was home from college THAT summer and happened to work at our local credit bureau.  He mentioned the situation to his boss one day...  Boss says, "bring in the statement".  He sat down at one of the computers, typed in some info and hit return.  He then says to my son, "Your dad just took them to collection!" Big Smile  Got a certified mail receipt requested letter 2 days later!  Had a check in it!

Did the same a year later when I recieved a bill from a Doctor I had never heard of claiming that my wife was being treated for emphysema.  I tried being nice and called the hospital, doctors office, and my ins.  Got a major run around from all of them.  So I copied my wife's Death Certificate, wrote a really really nasty letter, with cc: lawyer, esq. at the bottom.  That appears to get Drs. attention really, really fast.  A few days later I got a call from his bookkeeper who screwed up,  She was crying and apologizing at the same time.  I didn't sue and she got to keep her job.....  I'm not a bad guy really!

Persistence can pay off!  And success can be sweet!

Gotta get going.  Remember over the 4th. "What doesn't kill you,  makes you hard of hearing!"

Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood Morning. Glad to see the Diner move went off without a hitch.Thumbs Up

ROBBY P: Good luck with the shysters... hopefully your insurance agent will do something to get the job finished, and finished RIGHT. I know I'd be absolutely brains-on-the-ceiling livid over the whole situation. Getting the engine replaced in Tori (pick'em up truck) was exasperating enough. Also, glad to see your wife's headaches are getting better.

ULRICH: Was sorry to hear of your latest health scare...I really can't add anything to what has already been said, but again...we're here for you Pally!

Just checked out WPF such as it is... Man, THAT DRILINE guy does do some nice w**k.Thumbs Up Also "props" as them young'uns say...to GARRY for the parade and picnic shots. Thumbs Up JEFF's powder job looked good too. I still say the gray/rust orange Centerflo looks like the ex-KCS stuff the Chicago Central ran. Wish I'd grabbed shots of them when I had the chance.Disapprove At the time, the CCP was just so...gnarly looking, not in a good way. ROBBY P would've had a blast modeling their ex-IC/ICG locomotives and freight cars. From the lead unit to the way car, the daily Cedar Rapids to Manchester turn often looked like a rolling RR scrap yard.Shock

I need to figure out the "punch list" for THAT ex-RI roundhouse, and am chipping away at finishing a re-w**ked Athearn blue box boxcar which has been modified into a MoPac car. I started it...2 years ago, I think. Finally squeezed out a few bucks for a Herald King decal set to complete the job. Actually, I finally FOUND the Herald King set needed to finish the job...then squeezed out the bucks to obtain them. It's cheaper for me to get them through a "TheBay" dealer than direct from the maker (located in the Quad Cities).

"Should" go trim some annoyingly low-hanging branches, "should" go do an oil change/filter cleaning on the mowers, "should" go do about a hundred other things needing done around here. Gotta go shoot youth baseball/softball league stuff this evening. Might just rest up and hydrate...

Have a good, SAFE day...

Funny that you should mention the old Chicago Central hoppers because that's what I modeled it after.

Went to buy a mew Miracle Wave. {that's what we call the microwave oven when I used to cook in a  resort area restaurant}.

Went to SAm's Club first, to see what they had...NADA, NINE, NUNCA,  NYET, NONE.

THEN, we went {OH BOY!} to Wallyworld Super center! OY, OY, OY! WHAT a ZOO! 1st of the month, a holiday weekend, and a LOT of people taking today or getting today off from work!!!!! 36 registers open and lines like you wouldn't believe {or would if you went shopping today too}!!!

WE got our miracle wave for a cool 99 bucks. 1100 watt 1.4 CF. WE also picked up a small grocery list and wiated 45 mins in line to checkout for 28 items! and the food items! my goodness- 27 items $75.00!

I think they jacked up prices for first and holiday weekend!

Oy, and now my back is cursing strongly like a drunken sailor at me.

Oh well, pop some pain killers and muscle relaxer and to bed for me, after we get teh new miracle wave installed.

LAter guys

Well,

I'll have an RBF and a foot long with the works. Off to the house in a bit but things are looking grim for the cleanout of the basement this weekend. Back in the shop tomorrow to straighten out some other backlogged projects and get some tidy up done so we can see the floor. hard to believe, but we need more storage space for the cars. CUL, J.R.

Good evening.  Looong day at work.

Well we are going to take the car to ANOTHER body shop.  We are going to get them to fix the problems, and I'm sure they will find more.  One day this will all be over.

I will talk more about it tomorrow.  Just tired tonight.
