Cederstrand
Jeffrey, steady progress on the van.

Thanks. It's looking like I may have a serviceable steering column for it soon. A friend of mine has one from a 79 model that should fit. He just has to check that the harness connectors are compatible. Other than that the only thing it needs is headlights. Only 1 still works. The others are all burned out. I've already checked the voltage on the circuit and it's a steady 12 volts. No spikes or dips. Once it's ready for the road I'll have it registered and insured then get it inspected. It's looking like there's light at the end of the tunnel.

Happy first day of summer, everyone!

Jeff ... I like how the paint looks on the van.

Sawyer ... Your idea for a paint scheme sounds good.

Ulrich ... Thanks for sharing the visit to the big layout with us. That invitation to Germany sounds like a good one ofr Ray. If Ray fails to take you up on it, I'll wonder about him.

Todd .... Sorry to learn about troubles with "Mom".

Barry ... Thanks for the photos. (When I saw the houses, I wondered if you worked for Remax.)  Will you have all of thoise induistrial buildings on your layout soon?

Cheers.

That last one of Bunge's is kind of likely to be built up by me but I'd really need about another 3' of workable space for that one! lol! I may use some of that for my backdrop though----

Evenin' Folks!

Flo just a decaf for me.  I'll be in the back resting after a busy day.

Ulrich I would be most honored to spend a day with you touring hamburg (and how could I refuse Petra's cooking.... Bow)!  Have no idea when or even if I might ever get over to Europe for a vacation.  Possibly in a few years.  Once I have my loans completely paid off, I can think about actually taking a trip like that.

I went to Canandaigua to deliver some flyers to my sister and picked up the form to renew my passport.  I will need it for a meeting next November in Toronto.  Also got the Floor installed in the trailer.  I used 2 x 8 x 8 treated lumber for it.  Still have to build sides which will be low, and do a few other things.  By the end of the week it should be ready to use.  Unfortunately, I didn't manage to find time to do any hobby related stuff.....Grumpy  Tomorrow I will be back out at camp for a few hours to do more trimming around tents.  If the rain holds off I really should weed the garden as well.

Just got conformation tonight that our NMRA Summer Picnic is all set for the Medina, NY RR Museum in August.  I now have to finalize the program for the day and get the notices out to the members.

Hope you all have a good evening!

Evening. Seemed like a long night at w**k, but Brenda said Mom is doing pretty good all things considered. Talked to her today myself and she seemed in good spirits. I think the security of the hospital helps her. No, I don't believe she does this to go to the hospital, but she does feel safer there. She is beginning to budge on a few things and we have been in touch with Senior Services in Springfield and there are many ways they can help. There are also some ALF's that can work with Veterens Affairs (Dad was a WWII Purple Heart Vet)  and that could lower the price. We'll see how that pans out.

Adam- I believe the same thing. Maybe not right away but most times it will be made known.

I believe the reason I was retired early was to have the time to take care of Mom. May sound a bit crazy, but with a full time job, I could not do it. I don't get paid near as much, but it's enough to get by and with the part time evening job at the restaurant that just happened to show up at the time I could use it, (see what I mean) and some odds and ends here and there I get the bills paid, can still afford soap,a few treats for Missy AND, have a few bucks occasionally for the MRR. Can't beat that. More than many have.

Robby- I guess the appraiser doesn't know you are like the old weathering guru. Nice clean garages doors just don't look right.Laugh

Jeffrey- The van looks 100% better.

Rob- Yup, there have been many times I have seen the similarities in the events you have told us about. I know what you mean. But Mom gave me life, sacrificed a LOT for me when I was growing up, taught me well, and, though I'm far from perfect, I don't think I turned out bad at all. She did a good job. Now it's my turn. It's the very least I can do for her and I‘m glad I can. Though as you well know, sometimes it‘s tuff.Sigh

Welp, the pillows calling and I like the way it sounds.

Prayers for those in need.

Morning all,

SOunds like a few people have trouble with "mom". I grew up with a mother having Multiple Sclerosis, who by 1976 was a paraplegic requiring a wheelchair to 1981 becoming a quadraplegic who had to be totally fed, bathed, cathed, etc. SOme years ago she two strokes, one after which she regained her speach, after the second, it took some time to figure out what her slurred words meant. I was the oldest child growing up so from age about 10 all the household duties fell to me as a kid as my father had a good job to take of our needs. He did retire early to take care of mom full time til she died at age 60 in 2003.We had a ranch house which was essential for her to use the BR, bath, LR, kitchen all on one floor while she was alive.

SO I sympathize/empasize with you all. We are now facing such things with MIL, who is 83 and had a stroke some 15 years ago. Fortunately it affected her left side, not the right which was her handed-ness.She is now incontinent, spends most time in bed, and Dr.s have suggested FIL put her in a nursing home, which she says now way and FIL won't subject her to that. WOrse, they live in a multi-level house with no one floor having a bath, bedroom and sitting room all on one floor. There is a "potty chair" on each floor so she can use, and a wheelchair on each floor. SHe needs to travel by wheel chair to the stairlift seat to change floors, tehn by wheelchair again to her self-lift LR chair for the day, before going back for a nap to bed again, and can only limitedly move now.FIL is 82 and not is such great shape either.WE may ahve to move in with them to take care of MIL.

That is one reason we like the trailer and will look to buy only a ranch house...one floor living. If we have a basement big enough for layouts we can enjoy them as long as we can get down there, when we can't we won't need to move off the main floor.

All those who have such problems with parents/in laws....extra prayers will be said when we light the prayer candle, along with prayers for those in need.

WEll  I have to see the pulmonologist today. so half my day is gone for that. Depending how i feel later I may finally attack that train room. I have some boxes I can put stuff in to keep out for Xmas easy access, or just pack away.

My mother taught me how to sew and mend things so about 4-5 years ago I went on a quilt making kick. I made three that year- one smaller one for MIL's shoulders, on for my other half and a coverlet for me. I went wild buying up all cotton material for making more quilts, with with the idea of maybe selling them, but my interest is lost. I found I don't really have the room to lay out quilts to sew together as the pieces get larger. I have two dressers in the train room full of material I am hoping to donate to someone/ organization {local} that makes quilts for those in the cancer wards or for Disabled Vets in the hospital. Then I will have the space in the dressers to put the train stuff!

WEll, I have bent your ears enough. I think its supposed to be sticky and cloudy today as a storm's a'coming according to the weather person who knows more than I do about it. I hate sticky days. Breathing is harder.

Have as great a day as you can!

Good morning all,

Ulrich
, sounds like a very cool field trip, I’ve seen the pictures and the YouTube videos, but to go there in person must have been exciting.  There is a large display in New Jersey, maybe if I make it out that way….  How is your Mom doing?

Robby, the garage looks great.  My garage door landed crooked and it was caused by a weak spring.  I didn’t know that until the spring broke and had it replaced. Anyway something to think about since those windows is really expensive.  When you get done painting your garage doors and I’ll invite you over to do mine, LOL.

Rob, I noticed a couple new episodes already, I wonder who will be providing the videos this year, I enjoyed the Herron Rail movies from last season.

Jeff, very nice, keep the pictures coming.

I just picked up a new app for the IPhone or Droid from RedLaser; it’s a bar code scanner.  If you scan a locomotive or MRR item’s bar code (or anything with a bar code) it will search the internet and give you the top 100 lowest prices for the item from retailers and online shopping sources.  It will also let you email a shopping list, so if you want to drop a Wish list to someone you could walk through your Local Hobby Store (LHS) or Home Depot scan everything you want and email it to all your friends!

Good morning all. Happy second day of summer. A largely overlooked potential holiday if you ask me.

Gonna unload the groceries at the restaurant here in a couple hours, then, head to town to see Mom, and, I need some scale 6"X6" strip styrene for the curbing on the boulevard. Hopefully, since I will be in that neck of the woods, I can get some and proceed with that part of the progress as time allows. Then to do the bookwork for the Church this afternoon sometime because the events of yesterday didn't include THAT. No w**k tonight so I hope to get things done, like clean out a downspout, trim a bush or two, pick some Black Raspberries before the birds get them all. You know, odds and ends.

Well, looks like I better shut down as by the thunder I hear and the darkening of the clouds and a quick check of the radar, looks like a reapeat of the storm in the middle of the night is popping up right over us. So....., best shut down the computer.

Have a GReat Day!!!!

LUNCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dinner

I finally finished up the two boxcars.  Now I hope they sell!!!  Later today I hope to work on the layout.  Add some grass, and maybe repaint the roads.

Todd.......I told the appraiser  I think the old look, looks good.   He just looked at me Confused Big Smile.

Lee.......Its been a job, believe me.  We still got some work to do to it.  I can't wait for Saturday Banged Head.

Here's a couple of pictures of the boxcars.  The blue one has a mistake by Athearn.....Believe that????  The step is glued to the cut-lever, and not the car.  Its not broke, but just a error.  I called to get a new car, but its discontinued.  Just my luck!!

 Good Afternoon,

Supper time! Well, not yet, but in a couple of hours. It´s been an uneventful day, just went shopping with Petra, with only a few things to buy, as the month is coming to an end, in term of money...

Flo, I´ll have a Salad Nicoise, buttered toast and a RBF, please.

Lee - given the circumstances, my mom is doing. We were lucky to enlist all the household help she needs, as she is very weak and there is only little prospect of improving. Although it would be much better for my parents to move into a place where they can get the support they need, it will remain a delicate subject to discuss with them. It is a bit of an "you cannot shift an old tree without it dying"-thing.

Robby - again, I am awed by your work! The CIRR box car has that certain used, but not so abused look, which I really like!  Good job on the garage door - without weathering Big Smile

Petra is watching South Africa playing France - it seems, as if France will be sent home and that´s a good one!

CUL!

Well, found Stan Lytle's site again, copied the GP35 into MS paint and had it in the same window as the Eby GP35 I painted up, copied the paint scheme onto the stan lytle, which I can post, and saved it into a different file then, so here it is: [image posted w/ permission of author and MR forums (6/17/09)] - hope that's correct, it's been a while since I psoted one.

Afternoon folks!

Chloe I need a RBF to cheer me up.....

Got back from Scout camp a couple hours ago.  Ran out of battery just about the time it decided to rain.  Got a bunch more done though.  I have another battery and charger on order.  Then I should be able to do a whole campsite in one sitting.  Rain stopped so I continued the w*rk on the trailer.  Now its raining again.  So I come in the house and sit down to read the Finger Lakes Crimes Times.  Peruse the front page, then turn the page and glance at the obituaries.....  My eye hit one with a photo right away.

A young man who was one of my favorite students in the middle school not that long ago has died (evidently cancer).......  This was a kid who always had a grin on his face, pleasant personality, and never had a bad word for anyone.  He was also one of my chorus students and stayed in chorus all through high school.  After he graduated he became an insurance salesman and moved to Washington State.   They also said he was a composer of many different styles of music and was still singing........  He was 26....  Just doesn't seem fair does it.

I think I'll go hide in the train room for a while. Sigh

Hi guys!

Pulmonologist was just a 6 mo. check up. Yes, I can still breathe, he contined  my inhalers, CPAP machine and O2 at night scripts. See him agian in 6 mos for a PFT {Pulomary Function Test} and repeat review of my "situation".

Robby P.-been meaning to tell you that the half of the garage that is finished looks great and probably added a few $$ to your house's bottom line, if the other side matches it soon. It is amazing that with just $2K {on some TV shows on some cable channels such as HGTV} one can increase the value of a house by $10-15-20K easily, often with just new paint and a few well chosen update items. So good job! Thumbs Up You ARE making the wife do all the work while you work on your layout right??  Big Smile ANd those RRcars look G-R-E-A-T! Thumbs Up

RAY- While I am smack dab in what is considered "middle aged", I am amazed at the number of my classmates who have predeceased me, including one of a heart attack in 11th grade on his way walking to school.

Sounds swell! Wonder if it works well. AS I said in another thread, I do believe that such things may be the wave of the future. May make stores and maufacturers more competetive. Then again...may put a lot out of business, adding to the downturn in the economy OR causing more big business "superstores" that can undercut smaller outlets until we have no choice but to pay whatever the bigger one wants for an item after tehy mark it up for their margins.

Well, have a great day!

Howdy, Mom's doing well so far. They now say she has a small fracture in her hip. I had to leave before the bone doctor arrived to say what they are going to do.

Other than that, I'm pretty excited about now. Just stopped in while the grill is heating, gonna try Ryan's Finger Lickin'Rub finally on a couple of Ribeye's. Brenda has opted out as she likes very little if any spice. But I Haven't tried it so I'm goin in cold  Big Smile.

Rob- Apparently the appraiser hasn't seen your work! Which you once again have shown as GREAT!.

Ray- No it doesn't seem fair with all the less than, how shall I say.... Respectable, people out there, but alas we are left to wonder why. My prayers go out to his family and friends. And teachers as well.

Great news! I made it to Castle Trains and picked up a WS Random Stone tunnel portal, a package of 6"X 6" scale and 6"X8" scale strip styrene. I believe I'll use the 6X8 for the curbing. That was a decision made in the FLHS based on viewing the stuff first hand. ANOTHER advantage to touch and feel as aposed to internet hobby shop. I feel pretty lucky.

Grill oughta be ready so TTFN Dinner

Two words.... Nummy Num.

Guys, I'm tellin' you, if'n you got about 10 bucks extra, buy some of Ryan's Finger Lickin' Rub. Tastey, tastey, Tay-a-sty. No it doesn't cost ten bucks, but to get it to you it adds up to about that and he doesn't hide the Postage cost so I can tell you he isn't making a killing off of the handling. Very, very reasonable pretty cheap on his part. I highly recommend this poduct and not just because it's Ryan. After cooking on my steak, Brenda took a bite and said it was pretty good and wasn't as spicy as her finger full of raw spice ( which during the prep stage I did give it a try to get an idea of how much to use and I didn't think was bad at all), I said.....duh. To myself of course. WhistlingMischiefSmile,Wink, & Grin

We had a GREAT night at the fire station last night (Monday) as our BRAND NEW "jaws" arrived!!Big Smile We got a full set of hydraulic rescue tools (spreader, cutter, ram, power unit) from TnT. The state-of-the-art set replaces our 1972 vintage HURST (yes muscle car dudes...THAT "HURST") rescue tools (the original "JAWS of Life"). Unfortunately, we weren't able to cut anything up...but THAT training session will be coming sooner than later. We practiced with a similar set last summer...a full hands-on "try-'em, you'll like-em" demo by our sales rep. Much celebration ensued with the new tools in-service and placed on the truck.

Good morning all,

IPhone App;
Well I found another use for it, inventorying my MRR collection, scan the bar code and email the list to my computer. I think it will work great in the large chain stores that claim they will beat anybody’s advertised price.  If you scan a large appliance at Home Depot and it’s cheaper at Lowe’s….well its click beep, can you beat this price?  I doubt it will harm the LHS, but I hate the prices at Hobby Town; most rolling stock is $27+. My LHS rolling stock starts at $7+.  I might just show them how overpriced Hobby Town really is.

Ulrich, I’m sorry to hear your family is going through such a tough time.  Last week my girlfriend’s aunt passed away, and a couple months ago my grandmother passed.  It’s hard no matter how prepared you think you are for these changes.

Hopefully after this month I will have all my truck worries behind me the shop will replace the 3 rear U-joints Tuesday.  This will put me at $2K for vehicle repairs in the last 12 months.  That’s a huge dig into my MRR, food, and utilities budget.

Good morning.  Its going to be a "muggy" day today, so that means a hot day at work!!

Well I finally got to work on the layout yesterday, and got some roads painted, and grass put down.  Hopefully tomorrow I can do more.

Thanks for the comments on the boxcars.  I don't "weather" as much as I use to.  Its good to know I still got it!!

Sawyer........I read somewhere yesterday that Dale Jr is going to drive his dads "Wrangler #3" next month in the Nationwide series (Daytona).    He said its for fathers day.  I think it will be VERY cool to see that.  Now only if he took over the "black and silver #3".

Chris....When I lived in NC, my neighbor worked at a plant that made Jaws of Life.  I believe it was a Hurst company.   Man has technology come a long way!!

Well I'm off to work.  I will pop back in later.

Good Morning--Smile

We be sunny and humid this morning---going to be rather showery later on today too by the looks of things....Whistling

My plan on getting some MR time was waylaid by having some people show up so we could play with a virtual recording studio I have in my other puter. Just what I needed to record some ideas I have for music pieces---this thing has everything in it---MIDI, Sound, Virtual Instruments--analogue synths , drums effects, bass --Virtual effects--things like compressors, flanges, fuzz boxes and the like---it can record up to 72 tracks all with effects----lots o' fun----TongueApprove

AmanaMedic

As well you should be! I checked those things out---sheeesh---what a collection! It looks like training going to be a good thing too!Approve

Anyhow whoooooooo---today I get to go and do some yard work so's I better be off'n this thing and be getting at it....Whistling

Chloe, right now I'll just have a strong coffee and a breakfast bagel please---I'll be at the RC for a bit----Big Smile

Good morning. It's 74 and cloudy. The high is supposed to be 93. It'll probably be that in the shade. There's a 60% chance of rain today so maybe that will cool the temps down.

There's been good rain north, south, east and west of us but not here. The grass has only grown one inch since the last cutting and that was a couple of weeks ago. We've gotten some short showers that were just enough to get the windshield wet if you were lucky.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have one of those huge blueberry muffins you got there and lots of dark roast coffee in a FGLK mug.  I'll be sitting over in the front window booth watching all the stuff going on in the yard.

Chris looks like the department got some useful new "toys".  Hope you never actually have to use them, but if you do, I hope they do the job well!

We got just a little over a 1/4" of liquid sunshine yesterday.  I did some more on the trailer last night and decided it could wait for today.  Even though the temperature was in the high 70s, the humidity was over 90%...  Not supposed to precipitate today, and the humidity is down to 67%.  Of course the temperature is going to be in the mid 80s.....  If I am lucky, I should get most of the rest of the w*rk done on the trailer.  Hope to get the garden weeded as well.

I spent another hour last night looking for stuff I have hidden very well and THAT I need to use on the layout.....  Man, how I miss my mind! Whistling

OK, I think I just sit here and watch Todd plant beans for a bit and then get moving myself.

Later!
