 Evenin' folks!

Flo just a cup of decafe for me.  I'll be in the back booth cutting wood....Zzz

Robby, looking good!

After doing sound for a memorial (funeral) service early this afternoon, I came home and wrapped presents for my favorite 3 year old's birthday party tomorrow, made a potato salad to help feed the crowd, and then headed down to the train room for about an hour.  Wired up the new turnout #1 and ran a train through it and back several times and at different speeds.  It worked smooth as silk and the tortoise moved the switch points perfectly.  I used an 0-6-0 switcher and a string of flatcars that are a bit underweight.  I figured if they navigate the turnout without problem, it should be OK.  Here it is:

Have a great evening!  Prayers for all in need.

Just got back from Walmart, that's where we do our grocery shopping, yeah that's right just got back. Tonight however the wife wanted to pick up a piece of poster board. No problem right? Wroooong. I should have known it all along. This woman decides to look at everything in the store. She kept eyeing the ceiling. I think if she could have found a ladder tall enough, she would have looked up there too. Finally get to the grocery side, pick up some stuff, no list so I know it was almost a wasted trip as we will have to go back and get the stuff we need.

Rob- Now I'm wondering how time will react when the sun rises through the window in the north. Will it affect the growth of grass or, more importantly, armpit hair? Of course maybe it might speed up the evolutionary process of losing their Wisdom Teeth. That wouldn't be bad. They just cause problems anyway. Besides there is no dentists office yet.

Robby- Thanks. Just HAD to show your roads now didn't you. ki-ICK me when I'm down. Clown Seriously, yours look great. I want mine a bit more bleached out than that, but would have been tickled if they turned out even close yours.

Well, doubt if I'll be back in so, prayers for those in need.

EDIT:  I see I have midnight snacks and breakfast on me.

Here's a couple of shots of the cement plant/cement company.   I have the bigger plant on the other side of the layout.  This is to supply the cement trucks, and just have one siding for hoppers.

I still got a lot to add to this kit!!

A bowl of turkey chili, please.

***Todd, if all the light comes from windows on one side of the room, can East & West both share that wall? And if so, would the opposing wall represent a void in space and time? And what if a door is opened, letting in light the void? Where is Dr Who when you need him! OK, I think your solution is best. Mind if I copy it?Wink

North shall be North cause it'll be easier to remember. So it is written, so it shall be done.

Rain and stormy so the party is not happening. Looks like it'll be grocery shopping and a stop at Hickory River. A BBQ place across from Walmart. Surprisingly good brisket .

Don't tell anyone, but I got a nap in. (hehehehehe)

As is usual on the weekend my internet service is up and down with emphasis on DOWN. I went ober and mowed my parent's yard while it was still somewhat cool. Periods of shade due to clouds made it more bearable. I checked with my nephew to see when he's going to be able to help me put that gas tank on the van. He nos says Monday. It'll be interesting to find out what he says when Monday comes and he has fun things he wants to do. And he wonders why I don't trust him with time sensitive projects.

Beer. Nope, better make it a Root Beer and a double chili cheeseburger with onion rings please. Thanks.

Welp....I applied some color to the roads in Gold Creek Sigh. Why, oh why do I even try. Used a light gray wash to calm the white, then a light black wash to simulate grime etc. and give it a more worn and faded asphalt look. It was better than my last attempt on the old layout done with paint, (painted roads not a wash) but still not good. Maybe when I get some stuff around them like the boulevard and some trees and a bit of detailing it will look better. Often times it does, hopefully this time too. I need some scale 6"X6" for the curbing of the boulevard first WHICH I thought I had, but apparently not. Got my buildings placed again and the sidewalks. It does do a bit better for the appearance of the road, I hope the rest does better yet.

Finally got the grade crossing outer boards shaved down enough so they set flush with the top of the rail when against it (rail spikes you know) and the center set in. Now I just have to fit the other side and finish the grade. Guess I could have put down some more mud while I was there, but I didn't. Maybe I'll just put a "rough crossing" sign up. (chuckle)

Did I say I put down some sidewalk on the........ hm. I guess I haven't established North yet so I don't know which side of the street. I don't want to get the buildings too attached because I still have to do the hillsid/ tunnel plasterwork and scenery behind it and to the wall yet so I want to remove the buildings when I get into that so as not to brek them after I cover and put my elbows on them. Working from front to back. Real smart ain't I.

Let's see what else. Oh yeah, closed the AC duct. I got cold.

Based on what I've been told, my MRR for the day looks like is on hold for awhile. I have a Graduation party to go to for my niece. I know, technically it's Brenda's niece (her sisters daughter) but generically small town where the neighbors are even aunts and uncles, my niece too.

Thunder. Type attcha later.

 Good Evening,

yes, it is evening here already. The day went by so fast today! We went to Hannover to see our son and his girlfriend in their new flat, which is a much nicer place, than the old one. We have not seen the two for quite some time now, and it just felt good to be with them. We had lunch with them - the first meal Stephy cooked for us. It was nice. Lots to talk about, also. My son is all of a sudden so - well, grown up seems to be the right word.  It was also good to escape from our misery for a few moments. The drive back was also OK, not too much traffic. Saturdays is usually a bad time to travel, as millions of people head for the beaches in northern Germany.

Chloe, I feel like having a serving of Keith´s Polish Chili Verde soup and a cold beer to wash it down, thank you.

You all have a good day!

Morning. (chuckle) My Lip Smackin' Rub, has passed me by. Tracking indicates it left NC, passed central Illinois to Kansas City, back to Hazelwood Mo. and is enroute I assume to Springfield, Il. Then on to me. Unless it goes to Indy first of course.

Gonna be a hot one today. gonna get hotter but the first few days seem the worst. Temps not bad, lower 90's but the humidity will be up there (currently 88%) to make it thick, hot and sticky. Scattered T-storms could be severe. Guess I'll take it easy today. Walk slow and drink plenty of water.

Kinda in a hurry so I haven't caught up from last time I was in. so I'll catch up later.

Saaaaaaay, the basements cool. And guess what's down there..........

Have a Great Day!!!

Good morning.  Nice and sunny, but we might get some thunderstorms later.

It seems like we have been getting some goods news lately.  First the house, and now my wife got accepted to here old college for another (yes another) masters degree.   This masters degree will be in "special education".   This will be her third degree.  She already has a bachelors in early childhood, and a masters in computer education.   She doesn't start till this fall.   May the good news keep rolling in!!!

I am going to go by the LHS and get my cement company.  I will post a picture of that later.

Other than that, just my normal Saturday.  Oh...........I will also watch the USA vs. England in soccer.

Sawyer...........Have fun at Carowinds.  The wife and I still talk about that place.  The amusement park near me (kennywood) is getting a new coaster "Sky Rocket".  It goes from 0-60 mph in 3 seconds!!!!  It should open up in a couple of weeks.   I can't wait to loose my lunch on that one!!

Morning all !

It's saturday! woohoo!

I hope you all slept well! I didn't have a good night so been up and down. Time to take an Ambien as I have had a few nights like that.

Today-if I stay awake and my back holds out I HAVE to start some work on "finding" the train room! I have to find the layout clean some track and test my new GP7!

I have been watching a new show called "Hoarding, buried alive" on Discovery Health channel. It was what made me get up and clean out my side of the MBR closet at least and I cleaned up 25% of the kitchen stuff that was just piling up. WE are NO WHERE NEAR what those generally considered to be hoarders are in :"shtuff" accululation, but we are headed for it if we are not careful. ANd the show has given me impetous to clean out some stuff. I was gonna have a large garage sale, but my back can't take all that at once so litle by little I just throw stuff out/recycle what I can. If somebody wants it they can pick it up curbside, if not the garbage haulers can have it.

WEll maybe I try going back for a nap and get some more sleep.

I won't bother you guys anymore.

have a great day!

My Son`s Convocation went well.  It was threatening rain but it did hold off and later in the day it was really nice.  My son and his friends have gone to a concert in the Gorge, 2 1-2 hours west of Spokane, to celebrate their big day.

Bought the 50th anniversary edition DVD of ``North by Northwest`` (Alfred Hitchcock) this afternoon.  I have been looking for it for awhile back home and have been unable to find it. Had almost made up my mind to order it through Amazon and then decided that I would wait and check out Hastings when we were down here and it worked.

Don`t think I`ll get to watch it tonight as I would fall asleep I`m sure.  It`s been a long day.

Evenin' folks!

Flo just a decaf for me.  Had a big steak dinner with #2 son tonight at a local restaurant we both like.  Before we left, he went to the train room to check out what I have been up to.  Loved the Erie B3 Steam Shovel.  He asked why I removed the mountain.  I told him I just got so I didn't like it any more.  He pointed to the rest of the "finished" area and said, yep, it just didn't fit with what you are achieving now. Pretty good for a kid who when he saw the revised layout for the first time kept laughing and making "choo choo" sounds.....Grumpy

He and his partner just got back from a vacation in France and Germany.  They attended the wedding of an old college friend of his in Berlin and then just did the tourist thing in Paris. Tomorrow he will be going out to lunch with a colleague (Scientist at Argonne National Lab) and his wife.  They are in Watkins Glen this weekend, so they decided to meet and have lunch at a winery on Seneca Lake about halfway for each of them.  Sunday will be the Family party for my granddaughter Olivia....  Can't believe she is 3 already.

Ya know, of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!  I spent 2 hours down cellar tonight looking for a bag or jar containing left over items for the 65 tortoise machines I hjave installed on the layout........  I finally picked up all the screws, wires, and those little plastic thingies THAT the wire goes through THAT weren't used for some installations and put them somewhere.  Sure wish I knew where!!?

I finally gave up and used one that only needed a new throw wire cut for it.  THAT is now installed but lacks the wiring.  Hopefully I will finish it tomorrow and be able to do the final adjustments on the turnout.   Oh two of the turnouts are now installed on the layout.

Just about time for Zzz.

Later!

Howdy everybody.

We left Detroit yesterday afternoon, and we spent the nite in Dayton. Now we are in Cincinnati for the weekend with two of our grand daughters.

Lee ...  I read the article and you certainly have good reasons to be proud of your son. Read your posts and I see you also have cause to be very proud of your daughter.

Looks like a lot of other stuff is going on here in the diner. Prayers for all in need.

Jerry, I enjoyed your turntable creation. Now that's being resourceful.

Rob ... Is the mountain you are considering N or HO? I like my two Bachmann Spectrum mountains.

I'm looking forward to getting home an working on the layout. I bought more track on the trip. Also, I will have one more SD unit to put together. Before I left on this trip, Gus and I repaired my extra chassis which had been damaged as part of my "floor model" SD9. I bought another SD9 shell. After getting this unit operating, I will have plenty of SD units. (3 SD7's, 3 SD9's, and 2 SD24's)..

Happy Model Railroading

Good Afternoon!

I've been home the past 3 days with a nasty cold/flu and just haven't felt much like stopping by, besides Chloe would have made me sit by myself with all the hacking and sneezing I've been doing. Feeling a little better now.

Weather here has been appropriate for my mood too, rainy and temps not even up to 60F. Perfect for sitting like a zombie in front of the telie all day. I looked at a couple of things on the layout but even turning on the power seemed like too much work.

We were down visiting our friends in Minnesota last week-end and had a great time as usual. I also picked up an order from Kleins I had sent there. I got an Athearn flat with the boat load which should go well with the harbour. The boat actually looks a lot like a Chris Craft of the mid-'50s. I also got a Vandy tender for my N scale Mountain as I just like the look of them. I did stop in to the LHS today after taking the wife to a doctor's appointment to pick up a barge and one of those new Digitrax sound decoders. I will be putting it into a B-Man Decapod to replace the rather flaky MRC decoder now in it. The MRC works but you never know at what speed step it will start or when the chuff will start, not to mention the poor slow speed control.

Well, I'm starting to feel a little sleepy again and I do have a the new Model Railroader plus CN Lines magazines to kick start a nap, so who am I not to give into temptation?

EDIT: I did have a long, very long, recitation on a subject that, after reconsideration, I felt could be interpreted incorrectly if you do not know me as many peple I deal with every day do. I decided to remove it.

Todd, I feel your remarks were entirely on target, and anyone who might take umbrage probably can't see around their personal agenda..

Galaxy, kudos to your father for doing what had to be done!  We have had a few fights with insurance as well.  My wife is saddled with a myriad of issues, disabled since 1999.  In 2005 it was determined that she needed a custom power chair, with forward and rear tilting seat, about 14K.  The process began, and in 2006 we bought a Dodge GC Rollx conversion.  Still no chair approval.  2007 came, and we bought an accessible house, as she was no longer able to navigate easily in our home.  Her chair was FINALLY approved, and delivered on moving day.  Good thing, too, as the chair could not even enter the old house.

The housing market tanked at the same time, old house still unsold (but at least rented out) after 20 months on market.  Refinanced both in 2009.  I retired last summer to preserve my health.  The plan years ago had been to be mortgage free at this point, not with a 370K balance on the two houses.  Add in the 40K+ for the van, the extra mortgage costs, misc. uncovered medical, and it's been a struggle.  But, we have been very fortunate in the long run.  Once deductibles were satisfied, insurance has covered 100% of allowable medical, in excess of 40K per year.  Insurance also covered my 1984 heart attack, 2002 triple bypass and aortic aneurysm repair, even the 2009 vericose vein (40+ spots) ablation, and internal bleeding repair in January.  Had to pay for the lasix on the eyes though, 2006.

If it sounds like I'm complaining, I'm not.  There are plenty of down moments, but we are blessed in many more ways.  Thanks to an excellent PT/OT program following her last hospitalization, she is again able to transfer chair/bed/bathroom/shower with minimal help, for which I am grateful.  And I am grateful for the many faults, flaws, screwups, and "how could you"s" she has overlooked and/or forgiven me over the past 29 years.  There is that "...for better, for worse, in sickness and in health..." thing after all.

Every day is a new day, and one that we are thankful for.  I just wish they wouldn't go by so fast.  Retirement has not been boring; I don't know how I found the time to work for 50 years (ok, I'm counting paper route as a job also).

Exrta strong Italian roast coffee in a  UNION PACIFIC  mug, please.

Expecting a MRRing shipment that we ordered months ago from the "slowest online vendor" we've ever dealt with. Finally asked them to replace items on the original order with some they "actually had in stock". Sooo, my wife will have all her (HO) people hanging laundry for the farm house, a trailer home and one house in town. Something else in that order, but can't recall at the moment.

Looks like the chicks will be ok. I misspoke about the fried chick, wasn't a peafowl but rather a baby turkey. Was one of only two to hatch out this year.

I keep seeing images of a Cab Forward on my (N) scale layout, pulling ore cars out of a volcano! But for close to that price, I could just as easily see a sound equiped Proto Mallet doing the same thing.

Have been reconsidering the Bachmann Heavy Mountain. Except for their nice 2-8-0, have had so many bad experiences with the brand.

And then there is the prospect of acquiring a couple medium size steamers instead. Good thing it takes forever to get paid. The downside is the wife will have forgot her comment about "buying lots of trains" and will have new plans for those funds by the time they arrive, like fence posts.Grumpy

Have a good day y'all.

An earlier comment about asphalt?

----and here I'm thinking of a piece that had a line---"on the second second of forever I thought of a pair of broken chains lying on the tarmac"

Good Morning Concrete

And on that note i notice health care is an issue again---boy dont we know it up here---you want t do it this way? oi----thats all I'm saying. Money goes to those at the top---the front line healthcare ppl get to be laid off--isn't it just great? My dad worked as a healthcare worker in a mental institution all the while watching as more middle managers got jobs and his position became obsolete--as they closed down beds----just lovely---the place eventually got shut down in favour of the more "efficient" homes for  special care------Grumpy

I'm getting off the soapy box now---Sad

I got some things to catch up on here as it appears that my order finally came through---I get to finish my conveyors---yay!!Tongue

Chloe, I'll just have a diet pepsi for now and a creamcheese bagel please---I'll be sitting at the window booth watching the noon hour switcher

I suppose, we'd best follow suit, so:

Good Morning, Tarmac.

Good afternoon. Brick

I grew up with a mother who had Multiple Sclerosis. By the time I was 13 in 1976, she was wheelchair bound. By the time I was 20 she was reduced to a quadruplegic. The health insurance company DENIED their claim for a custom built wheelchair for her FIVE times. By 1998 my father said enough is enough and had to pay out of pocket $8k for one to be built for my mother, who was a tallish woman of 5' 9".

They also had some trouble getting the DMV to accept the Dr.'s orders for a handicapped license PLATE- instead of  those hangy-rearview mirror temporary things. AS though she were ever gonna get better and walk again.

It also cost about $15k to put in the electric wheelchair lift to their van, again an out-of-pocket expense on a new van. My father did have a $3k rebate from Chysler for the lift IF he bought a Chrysler van and had one installed, which he did most of his life {bought chrysler vans that is}.

It's tough on familys and persons of disability. I know, and they promise changes in health care. Yeah right. Lets just see.

EDIT: I did have a long, very long, recitation on a subject that, after reconsideration, I felt could be interpreted incorrectly if you do not know me as many peple I deal with every day do. I decided to remove it.

If you had a chance to read it and did take it the wrong way, I appologize. In no way was I blaming every parent for anything. Nor was I saying any parent can do something more than they are. I have an opinion on many things, but I always take an individual situation and apply my opinion to that individual situation when it arises. No opinion I state is intended to be a blanket statement for all. They are generic feelings I have and like anything, do not necessarily apply to all situations. If anyones situation does not apply to my opinions, then my opinions do not apply in that case. I generally always try to see both sides and usually I do.

But please, don't hang out at a bar everynight drinking $2.50 beers, $2.75 shots and smoking $5.00 plus a pack cigarettes and complain about how you don't have money for diapers or utilities, new shoes for the kids or gas to get back and forth to work. I DON'T have much sympathy regardless the situation. So please, just keep that to yourself. (No one here fits that description. I heard it again last night through the window at work while they were outside smoking with a beer and a shot sitting on the bar.)

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have the Eggs Benedict this morning, and a cup of dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug.  I'll go sit at the Rivet Counter for a little bit.

Rob, hope the rest of the chicks survived the warming, and very glad you caught it when you did!!!

Lee, my insurance co. paid a one time payment of $400 per ear for my first set of hearing aids.  They were analog and cost $3,500 for the 2 of them.  Since they had already bought me a set of hearing aids, they won't pay again.  My second set THAT I wear now set me back around $7,000.  Oddly enough they cover the hearing test......  I would doubt they would cover anything for an implant!  I have better things to do with about 2 years of my total income than to worry about being able to hear I guess. Disapprove  If speech sounds like a piano, I wonder what a symphony orchestra would sound like??? ConfusedBig Smile

Started to install the turnouts last night.  They are in place and just need to be soldered to the other rails.  I will then solder a feeder to power the frog from the Tortoise machine.  Hopefully by tonight they will be up and running trains.

My #2 son should be arriving sometime early afternoon.  He is flying in from Chicago to Buffalo where he rents a car and them drives to Geneva.  He is stopping in to see his Aunt as he passes through Canandaigua this morning and then heading to my house.

So.......  I better get some more cleaning done!  He is the fastidious one in the family.  He usually arrives, looks at the Mess™, shakes his head, takes a deep breath and says, "Daaaaaaaaad!"  At least I have him "trained" so he doesn't "help" me and clean off the kitchen counter for me.  First time he did THAT, it took me a week to find the toaster.  Over 3 months to finally locate the blender.........Whistling

OK, Later!

Good morning all,

“good” news this morning; 5 of my friends at work had flooded basements last weekend and are just now finishing the clean up.  Good part is I’m not the only one.  I finished swabbing the deck last night, now I need to finish putting everything away.  The only great loss was a bunch of cardboard boxes I was saving.  Train room has that overly clean smell of pine sol to it. Ulrich & others, thanks,

I was fighting with Tricare (Armed Forces medical Insurance) almost 10 years ago because they denied my request for new hearing aids for William.  I went to the E9 that worked directly for the two star Admiral.  I didn’t get the $1200.00 hearing aids; instead I was awarded over $90,000.00 for the implant for William.  The check ups are interesting, they plug him into a computer at the hospital like the old diagnostic machines they had for cars…

Jeff, tell you what my son and daughter are hearing impaired.  Daughter uses hearing aids and lip reading.  Kids have 99% lip reading accuracy, it can be fun watching football or in crowded places and having your kids tell you what others are saying.

I’m disappointed when people tell me they feel sorry for me because my kids have a hearing loss.  Why?  I don’t know any better, I’ve never raised “normal” kids, LOL!

Ray, if you like piano music the implant wouldn’t be too bad.  What I understand it sounds like a piano talking to you for the first few years.  As time goes buy they “turn up” the power to the implant.  You never hear like a person without an implant, but it’s better than nothing.

Smoked chicken at Robs house! Just kidding, I’m glad it wasn’t any worse than it was. Your fortunate to have only lost one chick.

Galaxy – I sleep in until 0501 every weekday!  Then it’s off to work.

Morning. Coffee and the #3 Special please. Over easy, Maple Syrup please. Thank you.

Robby- Great! Sounds like your work paid off. Now I hope the refinance goes well.

Galaxy and ChrisLaughMischiefLaughSorry, I should have clarified. (hey, it made sense to meLaugh ) in an earlier posting I said I didn't know what the roads in uptown Williamsville were made of, Concrete or Asphalt, even though I drove or been on them in some way every single day of my memorable life! Well, except for April 23, 1998. (I was sick and didn't leave the house. Happens.) See,  I want the streets of Gold Creek to resemble them, but yet I realized I didn't know what the material was. Is. Was. Whatever. So the night before the post I looked at the street to see just what it was. Asphalt. Laugh

I'll admit I'm NOT the most observant guy you'll ever meet. In fact, I'm not really sure, but I think we're living in a different house now. Something just looks...... different.

Have a Great Day!!!
